Newbury Park, California natives, The Neighbourhood, or shortened by their fans as The NBHD, are an indie rock band from the United States.

Formed in 2011 by friends Jesse Rutherford, Jeremy Freedman, Zach Abels, Mikey Margott and Bryan Sammis, the band released two EPs, “I’m Sorry…” which contained the explosive “Sweater Weather” in 2012. Later that same year, the band released a second EP entitled “Thank You.”

By early 2013 the band released their first full-length album “I Love You” and the announcement of their performance at the Coachella music festival that year. Because of the success of their EPs, “I Love You” debuted 39th on the Billboard200 albums chart, with “Sweater Weather” reaching number one on the Billboard alternative chart by June 2013. The release of the album meant a tour; a tour that they called “The Love Collection Tour” alongside bands JMSN, Lovelife and The 1975.

Riding the success of all their successful tours and festivals, the band premiered a new song “Silver” on BBC 1 radio in December 2013, and in January released “Honest” for the Spiderman 2 soundtrack. Around the same time, they also announced the “#000000 & #FFFFFF” project (aka Black & White) to be released sometime during 2014. Despite the loss of drummer Bryan Sammis (and the consequent gain of Brandon Fried) they again set out on a world tour, “Le Tour Noir” in 2014.

The band is adamant about maintaining a certain image, having turned down television appearances that wouldn’t film in black and white. The artistic style has maintained a great importance to The Neighbourhood, and when asked about it, frontman Jesse Rutherford responds, “It’s important to stick to something. The black and white image was one defining thing for us where we were like ‘we’re gonna do that, we’re gonna keep it.”

Live reviews

Everything from my shoulders on down to my hips was squished between the different bodies that were packed around me while we waited for The Neighbourhood to take the stage on Tuesday night at the Masquerade Music Park.

The heat from everyone around me was unbearable and made it somewhat difficult to breathe. I was glad that the concert was held outside. I don’t think anyone would have been able to stand for two hours inside the Masquerade nightclub without the occasionally cool summer’s breeze wafting through the wall of bodies, cooling us down as we waited. People lucky enough to be closer to the stage were sprayed with water by the stagehands. Unfortunately, I was just outside of the water’s reach. Not only was the heat an issue, but the overcast sky threatened to rain just like the last time the Neighbourhood played Atlanta. Fortunately, Mother Nature had other plans. For some fans, the anticipation led them to start singing “Sweater Weather,” one of the band's top hits, to pass the time. Although, the singers were cut short when the lights flashed on stage and the haunting intro of “Female Robbery” blasted through the speakers. Jesse Rutherford, the band’s lead vocalist, dressed in all black and a leather jacket, despite the muggy heat, took center stage with plumes of smoke surrounding him and the band, and three LED screens on stage with black and white graphics to accompany the music. From the very beginning, Rutherford was a bouncing ball of energy. He paced the stage, waved at fans, and pined for the crowds’ reaction, which he easily got. I guess he knew that after all the waiting the fans did, he had better up the energy of the tired, hot, and sweaty crowd. Rutherford’s voice sounded deeper with a little rasp to it, giving the songs a sexier sound, except when the group performed “Lurk” and Rutherford’s voice sounded almost exactly like Justin Bieber’s. Then the band took on a more somber tone, staying with the “West Coast vibes” as Rutherford said. They performed the ironically named “West Coast,” “WDYWFM,” and “Wires” to set the mood before moving back to the high energy that the group had in the beginning of the show. Of course when “Sweater Weather” started, the crowd went wild, but the screams and excitement increased ten-fold when the twangy guitar cue for “Afraid” — which was also the last song — ripped through the crowd. Middle fingers flew up in the air as Rutherford got to the chorus and his fans chanted along with him. Later, on the drive home, my mom said that she could hear everyone singing the last song from where she was parked down the street. As the last notes echoed and the band left the stage, the crowd chanted for an encore, but were only lucky enough to get the band’s half finished water bottles and balled up set lists which were tossed out into the audience.

The Neighbourhood are a group of 5 guys from LA who have a black and white styled vision for themselves and even the fans participate in that as well. The band as well as all the fans who know of their black and white theme will dress in those colors for the show. Even the visuals during the show are black and white, they do not use colored lights, and have screens that show black and white video during their songs. Their music for those who don't know could be described as dark pop, alternative, and hip hop based. They have a tendency to have more of a hip hop styled beat with alternative guitar styles as well as a poppy melody that could be sang more in a pop way or fast like hip hop. Its an interesting style combination that works very well and is different than what you hear everyday.

The frontman Jesse Rutherford knows how to work the crowd. He moves to different parts of the stage going to the edge to be close to fans, to dancing when the mood feels right, to getting crowd interaction having everyone chant or move their hands in the air like him. The band plays a mixture of songs from their debut album, their EPs, and mixtapes, so there is a variety to for them to choose from. It's always great to hear old material, current material, and new material all in one night. The shows are high energy even though their songs while listening on CD are usually more relaxed and sort of melancholic, during live shows the fans will sing the lyrics out all together and dance and sway making it so energized and fun. Of course by the show being so great must mean the band does a great job, which is true the music is always on point and the singing is very much like what you'd hear on a recording. These men know how to put on a good show and the more the crowd is into it the more they are too. It was a blast having everyone dance and sing along the whole show, as well as it being the final stop of the US tour for their album it made it special to see them for the last time until they have new music. They are a great band made up of creative, funny, sweet guys who make their fans very happy. This was my fourth time seeing them this year and I will definitely be seeing them again. Black and white will never die.

We’d been looking forward to seeing The Neighbourhood in concert being as they’ve been our favorite band for about 7 years, but last night was hands down the worst concert experience we’ve ever had. The a couple members of staff at the Van Buren made it even more miserable. I fully intend on calling the Van Buren to complain. The fans were so disgustingly rude and selfish with absolutely no regard for decency. We’ve never experienced anything like it and we go to more concert last than anyone else we know personally. We always buy 4 tickets and buy lots of merch. We’re very supportive fans. We were uncomfortably crammed by some truly awful, rude, insensitive people. We have our usual complaints about the Van Buren, when it comes to lighting, sound and design, but our feeling is that the best thing about this venue is that its size has brought in some bands that might not have come to Phoenix otherwise. I hope when The Neighbourhood returns to Phoenix they play Comerica. As far as the band, who we absolutely adore, they were incredible and Jesse Rutherford is even more beautiful in person. That being said, we were disappointed in many of their choices for the set list. We did not enjoy either of the two opening bands either. All in all it was a pretty terrible night and it’ll take us a while to get over our disappointment. We went home and cried...The fans were that bad...Like really, really bad.

How do I even begin to describe The Neighbourhood concert? For starters, The Neighbourhood is by far the best band I've seen live and this was the second time I saw them. Jesse carries so much energy with him while performing on stage. The only thing I wasn't too happy about was the turn out of the crowd. As they said they did book a "hilariou$ly over$ized" venue but come on,who in their right mind wouldn't want to see such a talented and energetic band? I think they're very underrated and they deserve a lot more attention than they receive. Regardless of the turnout, The Neighbourhood made it their best efforts to wow the crowd that they had in front of them and I assure you that's exactly what they did. The crowd, while it was a small one, was so engaged in the concert and clearly no one was dissappointed. The setlist that they put together couldn't have been anymore perfect and it was exciting to hear new songs that haven't been previously released yet. Although the first Neighbourhood concert I attended I was able to meet Jesse and Zach, I liked this one a lot better because I was so much closer and could feel the energy and enjoy the concert more. Their music is so unique that it's hard not to instantly fall in love with them.To anyone who hasn't seen or even heard of The Neighbourhood I highly recommend you check them out. You won't be dissappointed.

The Neighbourhood was the first band I saw perform at Lollapalooza last year. It was super hot, and the crowd was excited with anticipation for the festival to kick off. So I was quite surprised when the band came out in all black. The lead singer had on a black hoodie sporting the band's logo (which he eventually took off). They started off really well, getting the crowd moving to the beat. Looking around, I noticed that there were a lot of younger people who came to watch The Neighbourhood. They sounded really good live, and they looked at ease up on the stage. The vibe of the concert was pretty relaxed and chilled. As the concert continued, more people started joining the crowd. What I like about The Neighbourhood is their eery sound that grabs the listener's attention. They really brought out that sound, and the band sounded just like the audio recordings. One unfortunate thing that could have been planned better is the order of songs on the set list. They played their most famous song, "Sweater Weather" in the middle of the concert. So, thinking that the concert was over after the single, several people left to go to another show. Despite that hiccup, The Neighbourhood really showed us what a talented, young band they are, and I'm glad I got to see them.

My name is Sabrina and you will definitely be hearing from me a lot in the next few months to years (trying to make that sound a lot less stalker-y as it does). I've been listening to your music since 2012 and I instantly felt a connection. The way you write and sing about real feelings that a lot of current "hit" artists sugar coat speaks volumes to me, and a lot of your fans, something I'm sure you already know.

I've never been to a concert before and the fact that the first was on #THEFLOOD2015 tour, I will definitely be cherishing forever. I saw you guys in Pittsburgh and sang along to virtually every song. I will be completely honest and say that I was a little skeptical of how the live performance would be and how it would vary in comparison to the record, but I was incredibly pleased. I was definitely shaken to the core by how the live music made me feel, a feeling that I can definitely say that I'm addicted to. I just want to thank you for that experience as well as telling you that I appreciate every single word you write and that I often find myself analyzing your lyrics during the hardest times. You guys definitely have my support 100% of the way.

The Neighbourhood was absolutely outstanding. Despite being in section C, Jesse made me feel like I was in the first row. Not once were people sitting down throughout the entire setlist. With the neighborhood having a darker image than most indie artists out there, you would expect the band to be a bit more secluded and reserved onstage. However, this ended up being the exact opposite. Jesse can work a crowd extremely well and is very charismatic. He interacted with the crowd throughout the concert. He has such a nice sense of humor. The lighting and graphics were really cool too and really made the entire show. They were more important to the concert than one would think. The overall quality of the show was an A+. The neighborhood was amazing live. In fact, they were much better live than in the studio. I showed up to the concert expecting to have a good time and ended up getting so much more than that. There's a sense of unity one feels after spending hours listening to live music you love with people who have the same taste in music as you. Without a doubt I would see them live again.

There is honestly no better place to see The Neighbourhood than in Los Angeles. The California natives' El tour blanco was one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen in my life. Their energy never dies on stage, not even for the second they were told they had to cut the show a song short due to noise permits. They came back out and finished with the perfect attitude and performance. The music is impeccable if not better than the recordings of each of their songs and the graphics on the screen behind them match the vibe of the whole show as well. They can own an entire Victoria's Secret store with the amount of bras being thrown at them from the insane pit and their laid back attitude was shown when Jesse grabbed someone's phone from the pit and took some selfies making the entire crowd feel comfortable to be in their presence and ambitious to hear the music. Definitely a concert I didn't want to end.

I saw Imagine Dragons last autumn on their Night Visions Tour with NEIGHBOURHOOD and The Envy Corps. Before the concert, I listened to their album, I Love You. and I loved all of the songs. They were meaningful and were unlike any that I had heard previously. I was so intrigued by Jesse Rutherford's voice and I didn't know what to expect when seeing them live. I was not disappointed. They were AMAZING! Sweater Weather had just been debuted on the radio, so it was already a fan favorite. The song was performed better than expected and the performance itself was lively and full of energy. There was never a dull moment or any slip-ups during the entire set. This is one show that you would definitely want to see, especially if you are a fan of The NEIGHBOURHOOD or just an Indie/Alternative music fan. The NEIGHBOURHOOD is one of my favorite bands of all time, and soon may be yours too.

I put the following review on the “Bands in Town” app as well....

I’ve been to multiple concerts covering various genres over the years. So I’m not saying what I’m about to say without past experience. I am a concert junkie. I consider The Neighbourhood to be my favorite band so it hurts me more than I can express to only rate them two stars. Now I understand this was a music festival, not a solo The Neighbourhood concert, but their performance was incredibly underwhelming. Not only did they only perform about 7 songs, Jesse was-he wasn’t present with us! Me and other crowd members started to question if he was on something or just high. And...even if not, his overall performance was very dull. He sang off from the music on more than one occasion and only addressed the crowd once. Just very disappointed...I’m sorry nbhd, I still love you guys.

The Neighbourhood Releases Album and New Tour Dates

the neighbourhood tour dates

LA band The Neighbourhood’s new album is now available for purchase.

The release of their second album Wipe Out also marks their release of new single of the same name. The self-titled track embodies the soft romantic nature of the whole album. To further that atmosphere the album was recorded at the beach and includes sounds of  the ocean throughout the album.

The new album has already garnered some attention from media sources. Stereogum said Wipe Out “… So deftly does it navigate the seams between genres and the dark back alleys of the soul.”

The Neighbourhood has also recently released a new music video for their song “R.I.P. 2 My Youth.” The song and video explore the themes of the loss of innocence and death. Most of the imagery is very dark, sometimes set inside an open coffin with a single light shining down on singer Jesse Rutherford.

Several new tour dates have also been added to their U.S. and European tour. Tickets are available for the new dates on the band’s site .

Alternative Rock Band the Neighbourhood Is Going on Hiatus (EXCLUSIVE)

The group is best known for the 2013 hit "Sweater Weather," which has seen a resurgence thanks to TikTok.

Alternative rock band The Neighbourhood are taking a hiatus, multiple sources confirm to Variety .

The group, best known for the 2013 hit “Sweater Weather,” released its fourth album, “Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones,” in September 2020. They played two shows in October 2021 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, N.Y., and released a new line of merch in November. The group has not been active on its Instagram account since then.

The Neighbourhood’s hiatus comes as lead singer Jesse Rutherford posted several snippets of what seems to be new solo music on his TikTok account beginning Feb. 14. The band had previously announced a tour in Europe beginning in September, but a source close to the situation tells  Variety  those dates will ultimately be canceled.

Consisting of Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott and drummer Brandon Alexander Fried, the Neighbourhood formed in 2011 and saw fairly quick success with the release of “Sweater Weather” and first EP “I’m Sorry.” In 2013, they signed to Columbia Records and performed at Coachella ahead of the release of their debut album, “I Love You.” It debuted at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 200, with “Sweater Weather” reaching No. 1 on the alternative songs chart.

Popular on Variety

The band has recently achieved viral success on TikTok, with songs “Sweater Weather” and “Daddy Issues” becoming the soundtrack to several trends on the video sharing app. This has translated to a chart resurgence as well, with “Sweater Weather” reaching an all-time peak of No. 30 on Spotify’s global chart this year, nearly 10 years after its release, according to Chart Data .

Christchurch makes case to government for secure community housing funding.

Christchurch's mayor says central government will get more houses if it guarantees funding for local-led community projects.

Housing Minister Chris Bishop unveiled Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust (ŌCHT) and Ngāi Tūāhuriri's first mixed housing project in the suburb of Somerfield in Christchurch on Wednesday.

The 40 Carey Street homes consist of affordable rentals, community houses and gradual home ownership, targeted at families.

Ten of them would be for Ngāi Tūāhuriri whānau.

The whole complex has been built like a micro-neighbourhood, centred on a green space with picnic tables and a basketball half court.

There were currently 2000 people in need of housing in Christchurch, ŌCHT's chief executive Cate Kearney said.

"For those most in need, we have 11 public houses in here that are two, three and four bedroom [homes]," she said.

"What used to be here was 32 bedsits, single social housing units built in the 1940s, now there are 104 bedrooms. That's quite a lot of new housing stock coming on the market."

The project had been built in roughly six months, to time and budget, and was the 14th ŌCHT development, Kearney said.

"Our challenge is the start-stop nature of funding. That's not about changing governments, it's been like that since we were created eight years ago. Some years funding is easy, some years it's not," she said.

Barriers included supply chain shortages and the amount of social or community housing allocated by central government to Christchurch, Kearney said.

Paenga Kupenga, Ngāi Tūāhuriri's economic development arm, said it had aspirations "to do a lot more" and continue the new partnership with ŌCHT.

The rūnanga had been largely focused on providing social services from Tuahiwi, in North Canterbury, but since the 2011 earthquakes had been more involved in making things happen in the city, the chair of Paenga Kupenga, Barry Bragg said.

"That was one of the key messages for the Crown today, that the community can take responsibility, in partnership with iwi, to build more houses," he said.

"Our whānau represent a fair reflection of the rest of the community. There are a lot of lower and middle income earners that are struggling to get into the housing market."

Ngāi Tūāhuriri was pleased to see the project come to completion and hoped to see more follow on from it, Bragg said.

Christchurch City Council had another five areas of vacant land the same size as the Carey Street project that it wanted to develop with ŌCHT, mayor Phil Mauger said.

"All we need is the government to help us fund them. And we know for a fact that we're building these buildings for just under half the price per square metre as Kāinga Ora. The same house.

"So please, give us the money and we can build double the houses," he said.

Kāinga Ora had the same builder, but more overhead costs, Mauger said.

The next step was to expand ŌCHT to provide its services to Greater Christchurch, he said.

"We want to have it that the Waimakariri and Selwyn districts can just latch onto the side, otherwise, they'll have to start up a whole regime of their own," he said.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it. We just want to expand it out, let some of their guys join the board and share the love around."

Central government had big ambitions for social housing, and right across the housing continuum, Bishop said.

"In Budget 2024 we re-allocated money from first home grants and put it into new social housing places, so 1500 new social houses from 2025 to 2026 and onwards," he said.

"That will mean ŌCHT, for example here in Christchurch, has confidence about the pipeline for the future."

Projects like Carey Street were the future of community and affordable housing, Bishop said.

"Gone are the days where you build social housing in one part of the city or the neighbourhood and just leave people to it."

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development would outline where the 1500 houses would be built and the criteria used to work out their location by the end of June, he said.

The Euro 2024 city guide: The stadiums, the landmarks and the best watering holes

About to head to Germany for four weeks of football and beer? Let The Athletic be your guide to the 10 host cities of Euro 2024…

The Olympiastadion (capacity, 71,000) has hosted some truly iconic sporting moments since it was rebuilt 20 years ago.

In 2009, Usain Bolt shocked the world when he broke the 100m and 200m world records in the World Championships. Both marks still stand today. In 2015, Barcelona won their fifth (and most recent) Champions League , beating Juventus 3-1. And in 2006, Marco Materazzi insulted Zinedine Zidane’s sister and, well, the rest is history.

With a huge gap at one end of the ground, it’s windy, making it the German equivalent of Stoke City’s Bet365 Stadium. Robert Huth would have felt right at home.

As far as big, modern European stadiums go, Hertha Berlin’s home is one of the best and most atmospheric, with the running track being the only thing to let it down (although its blue colour makes it distinctive).

What  not to do? One of Europe’s most cultural, alternative and historic cities, Berlin has galleries, museums (180 of them) and places of deep historical interest, including Charlottenburg Palace, the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, the Berlin Wall Memorial, the Holocaust Memorial, Berlin Zoo or Museum Island.

Then line your stomach with currywurst, go clubbing at techno temple Berghain, and ease your hangover the next morning chilling out in beautiful public park Tiergarten.

Where to drink

If it’s atmosphere you want, watch any of the tournament’s 51 matches in the fan zone by the Reichstag building. They’ll squeeze 10,000 into there, while by the Brandenburg Gate, at least 30,000 will watch Germany games (and any of the city’s games, and other fixtures, from the latter stages) on the fan mile, complete with the world’s largest football goal (63 metres by 21 metres) and five massive screens. Tor!

Did you know?

Berlin is tree-heavy, with 30 per cent of the city comprising green spaces and woodlands. And the whole place is also absolutely massive — it’s nine times bigger than Paris. Nein!

Eat a doner kebab. They were invented in Berlin.

Say after visiting: “Wow, I really get Germany now.”

Like many of the stadiums for Euro 2024, Cologne’s RheinEnergie Stadion (capacity, 43,000 and known as Cologne Stadium for the tournament) was built for the Germany-hosted 2006 World Cup.

Also, like many of the stadiums for this tournament, it will play host to second-tier German football next season after Cologne were relegated last month. Half the 10 stadiums are home to 2. Bundesliga  clubs (also Hertha in Berlin, Schalke in Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg and Fortuna Dusseldorf). It’s like half of Euro 2028 being played at Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds , Swansea and Derby .

Not that the RheinEnergie (or Mungersdorfer, to non-sponsor fans) isn’t a worthy arena. In fact, it’s one of the best stadiums in the tournament — one which England fans will feel at home at when they play Slovenia there because, with its tightly packed non-bowl-like stands, it could easily fit in the Premier League (or to be fair, probably the Championship ).

The stadium hosted the 2019-20 Europa League final, but there was no one in the stands because of the pandemic, so did it even happen?

No tourist attraction in the whole of Germany attracts more visitors per year than the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter: a massive Gothic effort with two spires and 2,000 years of history. If that’s not your thing, try the Chocolate Museum. And if your boat still isn’t afloat, stick around for reggae festival Summerjam on July 5-7, headlined by Beenie Man and Burna Boy.

The Cologne Brewery Tour promises that you’ll learn interesting facts about the city’s brewery tradition. More importantly, you’ll drink a lot of Kolsch (Cologne’s signature style of beer).

If it’s cocktails you want, head to Seiberts.

Westfalenstadion, Signal Iduna Park, BVB Stadion Dortmund — call it what you like. It’s iconic, it’s beautiful and it’s loud.

It’s also much smaller this summer than when Borussia Dortmund play there, with its capacity reduced from 82,000 to 62,000 owing to Euros matches needing to be all-seater, meaning Berlin’s Olympiastadion has the tournament’s largest capacity instead.

Dortmund will host six games including a semi-final, the joint-most along with Munich (which gets the other semi-final) and Berlin (the final). Because the stadium has gradually been improved and expanded over recent decades, it doesn’t feel at all corporate and the atmosphere from the famed yellow wall (the largest free-standing grandstand in Europe) has to be heard to be believed.

If England and France win their groups and progress to the semis, a showdown between them would be played here, which is a spicy meatball indeed.

If it’s football you like (this assumption has been made), then tours of the stadium are ongoing throughout the tournament. If you’ve done that, try the excellent German Football Museum, if only to see the penalty spot from which Andreas Brehme scored the winning goal of the 1990 World Cup. In Rome, not Dortmund.

If your country has been knocked out surprisingly early and you never want to see another football in your life, well, there isn’t a huge amount to do in Dortmund, so just stick a yellow shirt on and head to the pub. Speaking of which…

For a proper Dortmund beer experience, you can’t go too wrong with Wenkers (yes that’s right, Wenkers. No giggling, please). Pitchers of Schwarzbier (aka dark lager) are €17 and you can soak it up with a schnitzel platter.

Dortmund is twinned with Leeds. Presumably because they brag about their attendances, too.

Drink beer and watch football. You’ll fit right in.

Wear a Schalke shirt.

Fortuna Dusseldorf aren’t the force they were, so the Dusseldorf Arena will be welcomingly full this summer, unlike during 2. Bundesliga seasons when, in its guise as the Merkur-Spiel Arena, it can sometimes only attract crowds as low as 27,000 to a 54,600 capacity arena (which will be reduced to 47,000 for the Euros).

Dusseldorf wasn’t one of the 12 venues used in the World Cup 18 years ago but is in this time, making it the only new city when compared to the 2006 list (while Nuremberg, Hanover and Kaiserslautern have been dropped).

England will play their quarter-final here if they win the group and (obviously) their last-16 game — and after that, set your Clocks for some Trouble when Coldplay perform for three nights at the Merkur-Spiel on July 20, 21 and 23.

If you like the smell of exhaust gas (this assumption has been made), then Classic Remise is right up your exhaust street. Dozens and dozens of classic, expensive cars are on display. No tour, no museum, just cars.

If you like cars  and sushi, Dusseldorf is the city for you. It has Europe’s third-highest Japanese population and its own Little Tokyo area, complete with plenty of good restaurants.

The Altstadt (Old Town) is known as the longest bar in the world because it has 260 pubs, clubs and restaurants within a square mile. Head there and just drink it in, in more ways than one.

Electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk formed in Dusseldorf in the early 1970s.

Pack a red shirt and black tie.

Go to Classic Remise if you hate cars.

The steep design of the Frankfurt Arena (capacity 47,000), with its scoreboard hovering above the centre circle, keeps the noise in (as does the roof, when it’s on). It’ll be rowdy for Switzerland vs Germany .

The Waldstadion (translation: Forest Stadium), known as Deutsche Bank Park when Eintracht Frankfurt play here, dates back to 1925 and has been rebuilt on several occasions, including before the 1974 and 2006 World Cups.

France beat Brazil 1-0 there in the quarter-finals in 2006, when a thousand YouTube compilations of Zidane’s performance were spawned.

No quarter-final this time, though, with the Group F winners (possibly Portugal) facing a third-placed side in the round of 16 the last of its five matches.

If you like money (buy low, sell high, et cetera), Frankfurt is the place for you. Germany’s fifth-largest city is one of the world’s major financial centres and houses the European Central Bank.

As far as actual culture goes, Frankfurt is good for art and music. You just might have to walk through a bank to get to them.

The Museum fur Elektronische Musik (if you can’t translate that, I don’t know what to tell you) is in Frankfurt (the city from where trance music originated) and hosts regular DJ workshop sessions.

If you’ve done a few German cities and you’re tired of the beer-heavy culture, don’t worry, Frankfurt offers something drastically different: cider.

The neighbourhood of Sachsenhausen along the River Main is home to the city’s renowned cider halls. Or Possman will offer a cidermaker tour and tasting session.

Seventeen of Germany’s 18 skyscrapers are in Frankfurt, the tallest being the Commerzbank Tower (259m/850ft).

Stay in Frankfurt after the tournament if you want to live longer. The city rates high for happiness levels and employees have shorter working weeks, placing it in the top 10 places in the world for quality of life.

Drink endless pints of cider every night. Your life will be shorter.

Gelsenkirchen

Another stadium, another name-change for the tournament, with Veltins-Arena becoming Arena AufSchalke for four weeks. Another capacity reduction too, from 62,271 to 50,000.

Oh and another 2. Bundesliga home team in Schalke, and another stunning stadium, famed for its atmosphere, with a retractable roof. Germany, they’re nothing if not effic… no, let’s not go there.

Spain vs Italy, arguably the standout fixture of the group stage, will be played here, while it will also host England’s opener against Serbia , and the English will be back in the last 16 should they win Group C. You may recall this was where Wayne Rooney was sent off as England lost to Portugal on penalties in the 2006 World Cup quarter-finals, winker Cristiano Ronaldo et al.

Great question. Do you like Baroque-era castles? How about parks? The zoo is pretty good.

To be fair to Gelsenkirchen, it has plenty of green spaces and some decent music venues, but an area known for a long time for its coal mining and steel isn’t the most vibrant.

That isn’t stopping it from hosting  three nights of Taylor Swift concerts in July. The Baroque Eras tour.

TripAdvisor’s top 10 bars in Gelsenkirchen are all actually in other cities which, to be honest, doesn’t bode well. But the good news is Bochum, Essen, Dortmund and Duisburg can be reached within 30 minutes by train if you want alternatives (which you will).

Dortmund is accessible by train within 30 minutes. As is Duisburg. As is Bochum. Essen, too.

Go to Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg or Bochum.

Send this guide to anyone in Gelsenkirchen.

A bit out of the centre via a 15-minute train ride but worth the extra distance, the Volksparkstadion is an imposing 49,000-capacity arena which hosted games in the 1974 and 2006 World Cups, and Euro 1988.

Hamburg’s home also hosted Shakhtar Donetsk’s Champions League group-stage games against Barcelona, Porto and Antwerp last season, with crowds of at least 46,000 for all three.

The stadium is home to an unusual and special statue, that of Uwe Seeler’s right foot. Seeler, who died in 2022, is Hamburg’s most famous son and scored 490 goals for the club, as well as playing 72 times for West Germany.

Where to start? Hamburg is a buzzing, lively cultural hub — Germany’s second-biggest city behind Berlin and, in terms of population, the third-biggest non-capital city in Europe (behind Istanbul and Saint Petersburg).

For Instagram fans, the city landscape, with its historic, beautiful buildings, is highly snappable.

There’s a stunning concert hall, Elbphilharmonie, which anyone can head to the top of for a view of the city and the Elbe river. There’s also a world-famous port where you can take a boat trip around the harbour, the world’s biggest model railway, and football hipsters will definitely want to do the FC St Pauli stadium tour.

The Red Bull Arena, imaginatively renamed Leipzig Stadium for the tournament, will hold 40,000. It opened in 2004, having been built inside the outline of the old Zentralstadion.

This is the tournament’s only foray into the old East Germany and it will host the joint-fewest number of matches (four, along with Gelsenkirchen) but has a couple of crackers, including Netherlands vs France.

In a 2006 World Cup game, Zidane (his third mention in this guide; he made quite the impact) kicked one of the dressing-room doors after a draw against South Korea , leaving a dent which hasn’t just never been fixed but is outlined with a golden frame.

Leipzig is a city of historical importance. In 1989, more than 100,000 people demonstrated before the fall of the Berlin Wall, so the Augustusplatz is worth a visit, as is the city’s former Stasi HQ.

Otherwise, it’s a pretty cool place: likened to a smaller version of Berlin (which is only 75 minutes away by train), with a thriving art scene, hipster cafes and a buzzing nightlife.

If you can squeeze in there, the tiny Stoned bar should be high on your list. It calls itself the home of punk and rock. The people are friendly, and the beer is cheap. Stick Rammstein on the jukebox and bang your head about vigorously to fit in.

Leipzig played such an important role in the fall of Communism and the reunification of Germany that it was nicknamed the Hero City.

Allianz Arena? Nope. Say hello to the Munich Football Arena, capacity 66,000. This is probably Germany’s version of Wembley in that it is a bit of a corporate bowl; albeit a good-looking one, especially from the outside with its genuinely beautiful changeable colours.

It’s a stadium that has been home to dozens of trophy lifts over recent years but obviously none in 2023-24 (sorry, Harry).

Munich will host two of the tournament’s best matches: Germany vs Scotland in Friday’s opener and then a semi-final.

Munich is expensive but stunning, and differs from the rest of Germany in its, well, Bavarian-ness. Plus, its chilled-out vibes give it the moniker of being ‘Italy’s most northern city’ (it’s only 100 miles or so from the Italian border).

The Bayern Munich museum is well worth a visit or you could walk over the Olympic Stadium roof, visit BMW World and its museum, or go to Weihenstephan, the world’s oldest brewery.

It’s a bit early for Oktoberfest, so maybe Augustiner-Keller for some traditional Bavarian ales and food. It dates back to 1812, has enough outdoor seating for 5,000 people (honestly), and is a Munich institution.

City of Winnipeg launches Winnipeg 150 Archives Tour

Winnipeg, MB  – The City of Winnipeg is inviting residents to learn more about the history of our city by taking part in the travelling Winnipeg 150 Archives Tour.

From now until the end of the year, we will be displaying historical panels and images about Winnipeg in different public places around the city.

“Winnipeg’s 150th anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate our rich history and the diverse stories that have shaped our city,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham.

“The Winnipeg 150 Archives Tour offers the public a chance to connect with our past and gain a deeper appreciation for the vibrant community we are today. I encourage everyone to visit the exhibit and learn more about our shared history.”

The first stop on this tour is in Garden City, in the Old Kildonan ward.

“I’m excited that my ward is playing host to this important display of Winnipeg’s history,” said Councillor Devi Sharma. “It’s a great opportunity to learn from our past as we move forward trying to make our city a better place to live and work.”

The exhibit features images from collections at the City of Winnipeg Archives, Winnipeg Public Library (Community Services), Manitoba Museum, Archives of Manitoba / Hudson’s Bay Company Archives, and other sources.

“This exhibit would not be possible without the foresight and investments of previous generations into the preservation of our City's historical records through the archives. The source material for many of the images and text in the panels came from this work,” said Konrad Krahn, City Records Manager and Archivist.

The exhibit will be popping up in the following locations:

  • Garden City Shopping Centre: Wednesday, June 12 – Tuesday, July 2, 2024
  • Kildonan Place Shopping Centre: Tuesday, July 2 – Tuesday, July 16, 2024
  • Winnipeg Richardson International Airport: Thursday, August 1 – Saturday, August 31, 2024
  • Grant Park Shopping Centre: Sunday, September 1 – Monday, September 16, 2024

More tour dates and locations will be made public in the future on the  Winnipeg 150 events page.

The same archival images will also be popping up at various libraries over the coming months:

  • Charleswood Library: Monday, June 3 - Friday, June 28, 2024
  • Louis Riel Library: Tuesday, July 2 – Friday, August 30, 2024
  • Henderson Library: Monday, September 2 – Thursday, October 3, 2024
  • St. Boniface Library: Friday, November 1 – Monday, December 30, 2024
  • Pembina Trail Library: Friday, January 3 – Friday, February 28, 2025
  • St. James-Assiniboia Library: Monday, March 3 – Wednesday, April 30, 2025
  • Cornish Library: Monday, May 5 - Friday, June 27, 2025

The exhibit can be viewed anytime during the libraries’ open hours.

There are a number of Winnipeg 150 community events and celebrations planned for throughout the year, as outlined in the  Council-approved administrative report .

Some councillors want to hit the brakes on south LRT extension after latest cost increase

Early construction work has already begun on this south LRT extension, but some city councillors are wishing they could hit the brakes on the project, after costs came off the rails.

Nearly a quarter of a billion dollars — that’s the cost increase Edmonton taxpayers are facing to extend the LRT from Century Park to Ellerslie Road.

The project was approved for $1.1 billion in 2021. Councillors decided last month — in a private meeting — to beef up the budget to $1.34 billion for a scaled-back version. But not every councillor is on board with following through.

“My choice would be to serve these communities with a bus rapid transit system on a different alignment in the interim and preserve the LRT alignment until later,” said Tim Cartmell, a city councillor.

The extension is 4.5 kilometres. It includes an underpass at 23 Avenue, a bridge over the Anthony Henday, and two stations.

The province and feds are each kicking in large chunks, but Edmonton is on the hook for $585 million.

A city report claims “economic challenges, inflation, supply chain disruptions, and labour availability” are to blame for the cost increases.

The mayor says the fast-growing south needs LRT and bailing now would result in the city losing about $700 million from Alberta and Canada.

“It’s an investment we have to make. We have to build this LRT anyway, so we might as well build it now because in the future the cost is going to be higher,” said Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi.

Councillors say the decision was made in private because contracts were not signed. Still, some want more information to be made public now.

“What I was expecting is more transparency in what is actually driving that cost so I can explain it to Edmontonians,” said Erin Rutherford, a city councillor.

There is no public completion date for the extension but there is already a plan for phase two to take the line further south, and perhaps one day, all the way to the airport.
