The marvellous magic of massage in Indonesia

Massage is everywhere in Indonesia. People have an almost religious faith that it can cure just about anything. If this resonates for you then your visit to Indonesia will be a trip to massage heaven. And you will be blown away at how little it costs.

Contents quick access ...

THEY CALL it   Pijat and Indonesians turn to massage for everything from aches and pains to colds, fevers, and even potentially serious illnesses.

But you don’t need ailments or to believe in extraordinary curative powers to know how calm and relaxed a good massage can make you feel.

For many Westerners this kind of pampering is expensive – an out-of-reach luxury. But in Indonesia it’s a different story – good professional massages are CHEAP .

Indonesian massage culture has along history

Indonesia’s massage culture goes back a long way. The famous Borabudur Buddhist temple built near Jogjakarta in the 8th and 9th century has stone reliefs depicting massage.

Today every city, town, village, and community has massage salons and/or local massage specialists just a phone call away.

Bigger hotels have in-house spa and massage centres for guests. A spa and massage menu will be part of the guest information package in  your room, along with the room service food menus.

When children awaken unwell or frightened in the night, Indonesian mothers will gently massage them into restfulness and sleep.

There also are masseuses who specialize in massaging restless or unwell infants, mothers-to-be, mothers who have recently given birth and women with menstrual pain.

Skills handed down over the generations

In town and city massage salons it is mainly women who give the body massages while it is usually young men who give ‘ reflexology ’ foot massages.

In the kampungs (villages) masseuses will be mainly older women and sometimes men who are highly regarded for knowledge and healing powers, handed down over generations. They take their vocation very seriously and most are skilled in identifying and treating physical ailments.

Many of those working in the salons use skills and techniques handed down from mothers and grandmothers.

But most staff in the bigger and better salons, have trained at a specialist massage training school or completed an in-house training program.

Some of Indonesia’s specialist massage schools have achieved international recognition, especially in Bali, a major centre for massage, yoga, spa treatments, meditation and other forms of traditional healing and wellness..

Here’s a short promotional video by one of the massage and spa schools based in Bali. Clearly they take their profession and cultivating expertise very seriously.

So how much do massages cost in Indonesia?

Massage treatments in Indonesia are very inexpensive – a professional massage in a good salon in most cities will probably cost you around Rp150,000  (AUD$15) for one hour or Rp180,000 to Rp200,000 (AUD$18 to $20) for an hour and a half.

A one-hour reflexology foot massage session will probably cost about Rp70,000. It’s customary for visitors to give the masseur or masseuse a tip of Rp10,000 – 20,000. (But there is no rule against being more generous.)

If you are in tourist hot spots like Bali or attend a hotel or up-market spa centre you can expect to pay ‘Western rates’ – double, or triple or even more compared to prices elsewhere in Indonesia.

The surroundings, facilities and setting may be plush, but the benefits of the massage will be much the same.

If you are in a small town or village and call in the local masseuse or masseur expect to pay Rp50,000 to Rp100,000 (AUD$5-10) – and there will likely be no time-limit. The massage will end when it’s done. typically a couple of hours.

The main styles of massage in Indonesia

Indonesian massage salons offer a range of services, and the receptionist will probably offer you a written menu showing the prices.

The basic items are:

  • Indonesian traditional massage (an hour or an hour and a half),
  • Thai massage (an hour or an hour and a half), and
  • Reflexology – foot massage (a half hour or an hour).

But the menu also may include aroma therapy, Japanese Shiatsu massage, hot stone massage, Swedish massage, and French massage.

(And yes, there also are places in Jakarta and Bali, and perhaps elsewhere, offering ‘Snake massages.’ The idea is that having non-venomous pythons crawl over you is somehow therapeutic. Can’t tell you more – Haven’t been there. Just not my thing. )

Reflexology foot massage in Indonesia

Reflexology foot and leg massage is popular in Indonesia and inexpensive Pic- beautyinside.my

Massage salons often offer the option of a ‘four hands’ massage where one masseuse will start at your feet and another from your upper body.

Maybe OK if you are in a hurry, but then that really defeats the point of a RELAXING massage, doesn’t it?

The traditional Indonesian massage is most popular. It is excellent, and the masseuses usually are very skilled.

Reflexology is also popular – the masseur works pressure points in your feet and legs with strong thumbs and fingers to improve circulation and theoretically improve the health of various internal body organs.

The contortions required in the Thai and Japanese Shiatsu styles perhaps make them best suited to the very flexible … or the masochistic.

Whatever treatment you choose, you can expect to suffer some pain. If you wince and yell “ sakit ” ( it means pain, sick or sore) the masseuse will quickly apologize and reduce the intensity.

But you can expect also that your masseuse will work and re-work your sore bits.

The good masseurs and masseuses have a knack for finding the muscle spasms or other parts of you that NEED the most attention.

At the end of it all your whole body (or your feet and legs if reflexology) will feel much better, though there may be some muscle soreness for a while if you are not too fit or well toned.

It’s a small price to pay.

Kerokan - Coin massage and ‘masuk angin’

Sometimes you will see Indonesians, including children, with awful red tiger-stripe welts across their back, as though they have been mercilessly whipped.

Don’t be alarmed. They have simply undergone a traditional coin massage folk medicine treatment called KEROKAN . Its purpose is to relieve a generic Indonesian catch-all ailment called masuk angin (meaning wind enters or comes in [to the body] ) which they will refer to in English as being ‘windy’ .

Indonesians, and other Asians, widely believe that if people are feeling poorly, have aches and pains, or pick up a cold it must be due to an ill-wind entering their body.

Man with whelts across back from kerokan coin massage

No, the whelts are not from a thrashing with a cat-of-nine-tails. They are from KEROKAN , the Indonesian coin massage – Pic see Indonesian Icons – jakartapost.com/culture

We shouldn’t scoff too much. Until pioneer medical researchers linked microbes and viruses to sickness – not so many generations ago – our forbears blamed ‘ vapors’ for our illnesses.

Indonesians will go to unusual lengths to keep the ill winds at bay. Like wearing jackets back to front when riding motorcycles, or closing all the windows when traveling in buses, even those without air-conditioning.

Treatment with oil and a coin or a spoon

The Kerokan massage involves a friend, a partner, or a mother applying some oil and then rubbing the edge of a coin or spoon across the patient’s back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and stomach. Though it looks painful, apparently it doesn’t hurt too much if done properly.

The rubbing raises lines of small blood blisters just below the skin. The idea is that disturbing the skin allows the bad wind to escape.

Sometimes the area also will be rubbed with Tiger Balm camphor ointment and the patient administered paracetamol. The markings gradually disappear after a few days.

There is much argument about the efficacy of the treatment, but it is widely practised in many other countries around Southeast Asia. It is said to have originated in China.

Sensual massage and sexual services

The regular massage salons to be found around the towns, cities and shopping centres of Indonesia are NOT about sensual massage or sexual services.

If you ask a masseuse for these services in regular massage salons, then you are being offensive. If you are seeking such services, then you should check when making your appointment as to whether or not they are offered.

You will avoid embarrassment for yourself and massage staff if you make a point of checking up front.

There ARE massage or spa establishments in most cities where sensual services are available, some of them with good facilities and sometimes located in high end hotels.

Ask tour guides, the concierge or other hotel staff where you can obtain the services you want. There is also information on the Internet regarding these services in bigger cities like Jakarta.

THE BIG PICTURE

Regular visitors to Bali are familiar with the massage and spa culture for which it has become famous – from massages on a beach on a towel to elaborate, and often beautiful, spa settings.

It is all a part of the spiritual vibe that the predominantly Hindu people of Bali seek to present.

It comes with meditation, yoga, consciousness, and ideas of self-discovery and transformation that appeal to many Western people caught up in the ‘rat race’ of modern living.

What many do not realize is that the massage and spa culture extends throughout Indonesia far beyond Bali. But with a more practical emphasis as part of daily living right down to village and household.

For the broader population of Indonesia massage is a routine part of wellness – being healthy, curing aches and pains, restoring balance, and easing stress. And because it is everywhere it is inexpensive.

There are quality salons with skilled staff in abundance. It all means visitors to Indonesia can luxuriate in ways that might be beyond their budgets at home.

9 Best Spas in Bali

Indonesia Bali Spa The Pavilions Bali Spa

All products and listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you purchase something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Indonesia has long been luring us to its tropical island for wellness—hosting us at hillside yoga retreats, overhauling our health through raw food consumption, and relaxing us amidst nature in its fullest glory. It’s not all sun salutations or blessings and chantings à la Eat, Pray, Love though—this is an island where adventure, fitness and forward-thinking beauty treatments await too. Of course, there are dirt-cheap road-side salons which might offer a great-value massage or mani-pedi, but they vary hugely in quality. So, these are our favorite addresses when it comes to quality therapists, charming environments, and remarkable results. Nature is a tonic in itself—all the better that many of Bali’s spas let organic ingredients and beautiful surroundings enhance the wellbeing experience. A spa experience should be an uplifting journey from the moment you’re welcomed to a long-lasting feeling of having left refreshed or finessed.

Indonesia Bali Spa Fiveelements

Fivelements Arrow

Nature is the headline act at Fivelements, a riverside wellness retreat, right down to its all-natural homemade spa products. When in Bali, where better to boost your health than a thatched-roof bamboo paradise where gently piped Indonesian music and the whoosh of a river below merge with jungle life? There’s no booze and no smoking—the emphasis is on wellbeing—and if you’re someone who finds dieting or abstinence a challenge, you might want to sit this one out.

Indonesia Bali Spa The Sacred River Spa at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan

The Sacred River Spa at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan Arrow

The Sacred River Spa at Four Seasons Resort Bali At Sayan has an eccentric curved main building and free-standing riverside villas. The air here is infused by frangipanis; neon bougainvillea frames every tableau of coconut groves and terraced rice paddies. Cross the walkway from the main driveway and you'll feel suspended over the jungle. Designed 20 years ago by a young architect from London, this sanctuary-like retreat is still just as captivating as ever.

Merapu Svaasthya at Desi Seni, A Village Resort Arrow

With a name that means "village of art" in Bahasa Indonesian, Desa Seni is a delight. From the moment you arrive at the open-air reception, step down into the garden, and see the thatched cabins, you'll feel like you're in a fairytale. Canggu has been advancing from a low-key surfing enclave into a bustling destination that rivals Seminyak, but this little patch—10 minutes from Berawa—still feels like a peaceful hideaway, all within grasp of the action.

Default

Spa Village Resort Tembok, Bali Arrow

A three-and-a-half-hour drive north from the airport sashays through mountain roads and past dormant volcanoes and the majestic Mount Agung. The pampering begins the moment you arrive at Spa Village Resort Tembok Bali, when you're given a head-and-shoulder rub and a foot-bathing ritual—right in the open-air lobby. Run by Malaysia-based YTL hotels, the resort feels like a typically indulgent tropical destination rather than a bare-bones wellness retreat.

Indonesia Bali Spa The Pavilions Bali Spa

The Pavilions Bali Spa Arrow

The Pavilions is nothing flashy or fancy: just a few simple white rooms under alang-alang roofs. What makes this genteel spa so appealing, though, is its focus on natural ingredients and excellent therapists. You can sign up for straight-up pampering, sure, but you can also sign up for wellness classes; one, for instance, includes a lesson on how to self-administer a facial using fresh aloe vera from the onsite garden.

Indonesia Bali Spa Soori Spa at Soori Bali

Soori Spa at Soori Bali Arrow

Soori Bali is a beautifully designed resort with bold, clean lines; landscaped gardens; lush, green paddy fields; and a seemingly private black-sand beach. It's no surprise, then, to discover that Soo K. Chan, the owner of the hotel, is also an architect. The main thrust of tourism has yet to upstage rural life here—further west along the island’s southern coastline—but the area is developing fast. The spa offers the change to enjoy Kerambitan's landscape while it's still relatively untouched.

Default

Bali Dacha Arrow

Hidden way out in the jungle, Bali Dacha is an exclusive playground where beautiful people can flaunt their languid limbs and blend wellness with see-and-be-seen socializing. Around 40 minutes east of Ubud, the spa has an air of exclusivity about it, all enhanced by the fact that it's pretty hard to find. Yes, a visit here is about the sight and sounds of nature and getting a little spiritual. But it's also about the lively Sunday night parties and fireside mingling.

Indonesia Bali Spa Glo Day Spa and Salon Bali

Glo Day Spa & Salon Arrow

The stretch of south-western coast from Seminyak to Canggu is a magnet for see-and-be-seen crowds of glossy holidaymakers, so it’s no surprise that it now also offers a host of glamorous day spas. How else are you going to look shiny and perfect in those Instagram shots? Glo Spa is a beauty salon to rival the best in Bondi or Beverly Hills, but its first-rate services won't break the bank.

COMO Shambhala Estate

COMO Shambhala Estate Arrow

Guests of COMO Shambhala Estate can join one of four targeted holistic wellness programs offered by this spa: Cleanse, Be Active, Ayurvedic, and Bespoke. In the Cleanse program, for example, Dr. Nancy King prescribes everything from detox massages to yoga to colonic hydrotherapy for a full-body reset. Be Active focuses on fitness, while Bespoke is a hybrid for those looking to try out different modalities. All guests have access to yoga (offered in an open-air pavilion), Pilates, and Qigong classes. These four programs are not intended to be pampering (though they are), but genuinely therapeutic. This being Bali, of course, there are even resident energy healers on call for those who want to take their healing even deeper.

Magical Jungles And Black Sand Beaches: Bali’s Best Spas Come With Beautiful Backdrops

— The dreamiest spa experiences.

by Georgie Darling

It’s not too much of an exaggeration to say that a spa day in Bali is heaven on earth.

There’s nowhere in the world that celebrates the tradition of holistic wellness quite like this southeast Asia spot and even the budget-friendly versions come with premium levels of service and wonderful treatments.

So, when you step things up a notch to the best spas in Bali, you can expect the very best.

Think: indulgent, opulent settings surrounded by Balinese nature. Think: world-class therapists using oils infused with Indonesian herbs and spices. Think: signature treatments based on centuries of passed-down knowledge.

No matter what else you’ve got lined up on your Bali itinerary , a spa day here is an essential addition.

The 15 best spas in Bali

Bodyworks: best spa in seminyak.

bodyworks Luxa Terra

It’s hard to beat the setting of a traditional Bali spa with plant-lined interiors and heritage-based expertise. Unless, of course, you’re heading to Seminyak’s Bodyworks: a place that transports you out of Indonesia’s most laid back island and far away through to the vibrant colours of Jaipur, India.

Each room here is almost overwhelming in colour, from jade greens and warm orange hues right through to the bright pinks and deep blues. The spa menu is also something to gaze at, with a huge range of treatments covering every ailment and more. Come here to experience a luxurious pampering session with treatments originally reserved for Indonesian royalty — or those smart enough to select Bodyworks as their spa day of choice.

Dala Spa: Best spa in Kuta

dala spa Luxa Terra

While many of Bali’s spa fanatics head slightly further up north for treatments, the real spa experts know that some of the best experiences are found in Kuta. The best example? Dala spa. Luxurious and sensual, this truly relaxing spa sits inside the Alaya Dedaun resort and is renowned for its exceptional therapists.

Come to Dala Spa for age-old Indonesian rituals that’ll leave you feeling more relaxed than you ever thought possible. Opt for a revitalising Dala bath followed by a body mask, massage or other signature treatment and be prepared to return again and again to reach the same levels of comfort.

Spa at Maya: Best spa in Ubud

spa at maya Luxa Terra

Ubud relaxation is on a whole other level when it comes to Bali spas. Undoubtedly one of the most chilled parts of the island, a trip to Ubud refreshes you like no other spot can. Spa at Maya is one of the finest in the area: a tranquil haven set to the backdrop of a jungle with only nature providing background music.

Flower baths are famous at this spa, with their rainbow of petals, soothing water and a river running by just outside as you lay back. There’s nowhere like it to experience such levels of serenity. If flower baths aren’t quite your thing, the huge spa menu is sure to offer something that is. Rescue and repair facials, traditional Balinese massage and opulent body masks are just some of the tempting offerings here.

AMO: Best spa in Canggu

amo Luxa Terra

Canggu’s AMO spa is inspired by typical New York spa days. Which means a trip here comes with all the trimmings: extra-luxe treatments, a combination of solo treatments or spa packages with friends, and a healthy cafe — one of Bali’s best places to eat for a chilled lunch — to refuel your body after you’re done with your treatments.

AMO spa is a top spot in Canggu and, thanks to its location right in the centre, means it’s usually always first to know about new offerings and specialist procedures. As well as the typical massage and facial menu, AMO spa offers waxing, IV therapy, nails and hair treatments. When you’re not being pampered and polished, the sauna is a brilliant spot for relaxing and enjoying everything that AMO spa has to offer.

Karma Spa: Best spa in Uluwatu

karma spa Luxa Terra

A spa day in Uluwatu is best experienced looking out over gorgeous clifftops and admiring the azure waves as they crash against the sand. Uluwatu is a top spot for surfers, which means the spas here are often tailored towards bringing your body back to its best condition. Karma Spa is one of Uluwatu’s finest for ensuring just that.

This luxury spot keeps Balinese culture at its core, with modern touches and highly experienced therapists providing incredible treatments. Relaxing, resting and recharging are the three main priorities at Karma Spa, and they come in the form of infrared detox saunas, sea salt scrub and steam sessions, and fresh young coconuts to sip on all the way through.

Puri Bagus: Best spa in northern Bali

puri bagus Luxa Terra

Head up north to Lovina for a spa day with a difference. Puri Bagus is renowned for being one of the finest on the island (for yoga retreats as well as spa days) and its remote location makes it all the more special. Check in to the spa here and experience true silence, except for the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach behind you.

This is a brilliant spot both for couples or solo spa-seekers, with an endless range of treatments bringing together traditional Balinese healing methods with 21st century touches for an overall incredible experience. Lovina might not be on the typical tourist trip around Bali, but for anyone looking for a hefty dose of relaxation, it’s an unmissable addition to the itinerary.

COMO Shambhala: Best overnight spa in Bali

como shambhala Luxa Terra

There’s nothing stopping you from simply turning up at COMO Shambhala for one day and leaving in the evening. But the second you pull on your slippers and robe and take in the breathtaking surroundings, you’ll instantly want to stay longer.

The spa itself is fresh, understated and minimalistic with an extensive range of treatments. You’ll find classic beauty treatments administered by expert wellness practitioners and a stunning resort to wander around when you’re finished for the day. COMO Shambhala is also one of Bali’s finest hotels , which just adds to the list of reasons why you should check in here for at least one night.

Sacred River Spa at Four Seasons Resort Sayan: Best Bali spa with stunning views

sacred river spa Luxa Terra

Honeymooners and daydreamers unite: the Four Seasons Sayan Resort is heaven in the Ubud jungle, with a luxurious spa that’s just as dreamlike as the surrounding resort. The Sayan spa sits deep in the jungle — surrounded by nothing but verdant trees and stunning sunsets. This is the spa to visit if you’re looking to go all out: a true once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This incredible spot fuses Bali’s holistic wellness philosophy with authentic traditions, physical therapies and energy healing to encompass possibly the best spa day you’ll ever have in your life. From massages and body scrubs through to facials, enhancers and wraps, you’ll walk away feeling like you’ve just been gently woken from the world’s best sleep.

Ayana Resort and Spa: Best high-end Bali spa

ayana resort and spa Luxa Terra

The Ayana resort sits on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the ocean in a way so serene you’ll never want to leave. Award-winning massages and ancient healing remedies are the name of the game here, with an endless list of treatments that you’ll almost certainly want to gaze at before you make your decision.

Rest assured, whichever option you choose is guaranteed to be a good one. Signature spa treatments are designed to promote harmony of the whole person, with intricate names like Seven Chakra Dhara and Lava Stone Reflexology providing only a little insight into what to expect. The experience here is best enjoyed without too many questions: simply choose your treatment and wait for the magic to happen.

Sundari: Best Bali day spa

sundari Luxa Terra

Sundari day spa, in uber-cool Seminyak, takes spa days pretty seriously. Everything here is done with attention to detail, from the interiors made with local natural building materials like stone, wood and bamboo, to the certified pure essential oils used in each of its treatments. In fact, this is one of the spas in Bali that pays attention to its ingredients above all, including additions like Ayurvedic oil and organic Aloe Vera in some of its treatments to promote an extra healing element to each process.

While some spas are spacious and white, Sundari skilfully takes things in the opposite direction, with dark, intense surroundings that promote a feeling of safety and comfort. Comfortable ambience, exceptionally relaxing surroundings and invigorating treatments bring together one of the best day spas in Bali.

Alila: Best for spa packages

alila Luxa Terra

Alila’s list of spa packages never seems to end. Whoever you’re visiting with or whatever purpose you’re coming to Alila for, you can be certain they’ve got a package tailored to your requirements. One of the best spas in Bali for those wanting a little of everything, Alila spa sits inside the prestigious Alila hotel in Seminyak and is luxurious from start to finish.

Come along for the day and experience the definition of true relaxation or take it one step further and check in for the night to wake up surrounded by tranquility. Pampering at Alila never seems to draw to a close.

Anantara: Best Bali spa for signature treatments

anantara Luxa Terra

Anantara Seminyak spa looks out onto the dazzling Indian Ocean: a view so breathtaking you’ll instantly feel chilled before you’ve even taken a look at the spa menu. In fact, if there’s one part of your day here that might cause you to feel a little stress, it’s deciding which treatment to experience first. The signatures here are a perpetual dream: carefully curated with only the finest ingredients and edited ever so slightly for your own personal needs and requirements.

Inspired by island delights of Bali, Anantara includes spice-infused massage oils and scrubs in all of its signature treatments, providing a unique experience that you’ll think back to next time you smell the same spices in the air. Couples and personal treatment rooms provide the perfect backdrop to your journey into bliss.

Away at W: Best Bali hotel spa

away at w Luxa Terra

Away spa at the W in Seminyak is the definition of a fun spa: colourful cushions sit on swish recliners with a backdrop of neon lights and sparkling decor. It’s a spa that’s perfect for a pampering session with friends or simply an enjoyable day for one in the comfort of one of Bali’s coolest hotels. As far as hotel spas go, Away brings together a little of everything into an experience where you’ll feel truly relaxed surrounded by vivid colours, playful scents, imaginative sounds, energising light and detoxifying potions.

Away is also home to a hot stone bath and a cold jet set vitality pool for a revitalising burst before and after you start your pampering. A facial room, a hair salon and a mani-pedi lounge tick off all other areas of beauty that you might also require.

Fivelements: Best traditional Balinese spa

fivelements Luxa Terra

Fivelements is more than just a spa: it’s an entire, enveloping experience into the world of wellness , with a fully-curated timetable that promises to refresh your mind, body and soul in a matter of mere hours. You’ll check into Fivelements for the day expecting to spend a couple of hours being pampered, before finding yourself rearranging your plans in order to spend more time at this luxury retreat.

Fivelements is both nationally and internationally famous: a place renowned across the globe for its five-star quality and gorgeous surroundings paired with incredible treatments and detoxing processes. Traditional Balinese healing rituals reign supreme here, with pandan leaves and fresh fruits playing starring roles in different treatments. Overlooking the peaceful Ayung River, let yourself relax back into Fivelements’ magic and expect to leave feeling nourished like never before.

Soori Spa: Best Bali spa for massage

soori spa Luxa Terra

Soori is undoubtedly one of the best spas in Indonesia. It’s the spa that celebrities seem to innately drift towards when visiting Bali, thanks to its opulent decor, beautiful candlelit treatment rooms and sense of serenity as soon as you’re inside its calming walls.

Soori exists on the edge of a black volcanic beach, among endless green rice fields and excels in every way when it comes to chilling you out and de-stressing your muscles. While Soori thrives in virtually every area of spa treatment possible, it’s a winner above all when it comes to massage. The spa menu reads like your new favourite book , with a range of Asian and European massage techniques and ancient Balinese healing therapies promising to undo any amount of knots.

Holistic Travel: What to expect from a Balinese massage in Indonesia

Balinese massage is one of the most wonderful experiences that you can have while in Indonesia, but what’s so special about it?

With so many myths of ‘happy endings’ and so many Instagram pictures of bloggers getting a luxury experience in Bali, I thought I’d write about my experience to tell you what it’s really like.

* This post may contain affiliate links *

What is Balinese massage?

Balinese massage was invented on the island of Bali, as you would expect, which means that it is available all over, whether you’re in Uluwatu or Ubud. Javanese massage is also widely available in Indonesia, but it is a different style to its slightly more famous counterpart.

Balinese massage draws on traditional medicine from China, India and all over Southeast Asia. It uses acupressure and stretching amongst other techniques to give you a deep-tissue full body massage.

How is it different from Javanese massage?

Javanese comes from the island of Java with its roots in their royal tradition, it is a deep pressure massage that uses kneading techniques to flush toxins out of the body. As I was in Bali, I decided I would sample the islands traditional massage.

Know before you go

After walking past several rough-looking salons on the strip in Legian, I opted to get a Balinese massage at the spa in my hotel. I wanted to make sure that I was going to a legitimate place that would offer a relaxing treatment. It’s always worth checking the reviews and getting recommendations before you get a massage so that there are no nasty surprises!

Even at a good place, prices are still reasonable but do be aware that there is a tax on top. The great benefit to Bali is that it is so touristy that spas do have to be competitive and offer a good service to survive.

Combining treatments

If your budget allows, then it’s well worth combining treatments, as you can have a massage alongside the famous milk baths full of rose petals or even a facial or scrub. I opted to have a coffee scrub alongside my massage which was great as it refreshed my skin and made my tan look better!

Before the treatment even begins, your therapist will soak your feet in a bowl of water to get them clean and then dry them afterwards. The spas are usually decorated in traditional style. I loved this as it adds to this massage being such a unique Balinese experience. You are treated really well and the tip is usually included in the service charge. This means that you don’t need to worry about that at the end, unless you want to give extra.

I had the coffee scrub first (coffee is made in Indonesia, so this is another local experience), then washed it off in the shower – it gets everywhere! Then it was time for the massage, which is typically a full body experience. You can do it as a couple or with a friend if you wish.

Choose your pressure

Your therapist will generally ask you what level of pressure that you’d like so it’s worth knowing your boundaries. I opted for a firm pressure as I like to get my money’s worth!

For me, the massage felt like a cross between Thai massage and Swedish massage. It has the stretching elements that you have in Thailand combined with the deep tissue rub of Sweden. Its a great combination as you don’t have to move into any yoga-like positions but they’ll still crack your joints for you.

Drink water

I felt great after my massage and I thoroughly recommend it, the therapist really works your muscles but its still a really relaxing experience. Unlike the pain of an Ayurvedic massage for example. Many masseurs are also really skilled so they can really find those knots!

After the massage is finished, make sure to drink lots of water as its such a hot place to be and try to avoid alcohol as you may feel light-headed.

Bali Massage Guide | Best Spas for a Traditional Balinese Massage

One of the most popular activities for travelers to Bali is visiting a salon or spa for a traditional Balinese massage. There is almost no better way to relax and unwind than with a good massage, and you’re never too far away from a quality spa while in Bali. From trendy Seminyak to tranquil Ubud , well-reviewed spas offering an array of treatments can be found all over the island. In between your trips to Bali’s beaches, temples, waterfalls, clubs, and markets, it’s always worthwhile to make time for a massage.

Bali massage-Balinese massage

What is a Balinese massage?

Unique to Bali, a Balinese massage incorporates traditional healing techniques from China, India, and Southeast Asia. Practitioners use their hands to stimulate the body’s muscles and improve blood circulation by rolling, stroking, and kneading. Manual therapy is often combined with aromatherapy through the use of essential oils, as well as with techniques like acupressure and reflexology. A Balinese massage is a full-body, holistic treatment that will help you feel energized and rejuvenated.

Cost of a Balinese massage

The price of a Bali massage can vary considerably depending on where you go. The good news is that it is easy to find fantastic service and value for your money. There are several smaller, independently owned salons that charge as little as 90,000 IDR for a high-quality, 60-minute Balinese massage. If you choose to go to a more upscale place that offers additional services, then the price can range anywhere from 300,000 IDR to 600,000 IDR. For a completely immersive, pampered experience at a high-end hotel spa, expect to pay from 800,000 to 1,000,000 IDR.

Indonesia brings back health forum to strengthen wellness tourism capability

indonesia massage tourism

The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (MoTCE) recently conducted its 2nd Indonesia Health Tourism Exchange Forum (IHTEF) in Jakarta in a bid to expand the country’s health and wellness offerings.

The event’s B2B meeting component attracted 20 local wellness providers that showcased health products and activities as well as 40 local travel companies attending as buyers.

The event educated attendees on the wide range of wellness products, including cultural elements like traditional dances, that can enrich the overall experience. Highlights included the Sanggar Tari Kinanti Sekar healing dance, Rumah Atsiri’s aromatic wellness journey and destination, and Bali Medical Tourism Association’s Balinese wellness local wisdom.

Data from The Global Wellness Institute found that the Indonesian wellness economy has grown from US$35 billion in 2017 to US$36.4 billion in 2020. Despite this, Indonesia still ranks 19th globally and seventh in the Asia-Pacific region.

Itok Parikesit, director of special interest tourism at MoTCE told  TTG Asia  that while Balinese and Javanese massage techniques are well-known and often associated with the country, Indonesia lacks a strategic approach to wellness tourism. Going forward, MoTCE aims to make Indonesia a global wellness tourism destination by establishing a wellness travel trend through the IHTEF event.

Itok emphasised that “Indonesia’s strength lies in wellness products that are sourced from tradition and local wisdom”.

Kinanti Sekar, founder of Sanggar Tari Kinanti Sekar, shared that her studio often received tour groups seeking to learn dance as a cultural experience, through which they discover that dance is part of the healing process. That inspired her to expand her services to focus on healing through dance.

For Andi Alwani, chief operating officer of Kelas Piknik Tour, IHTEF inspired him to create special wellness packages to grow his business. He noted that clients “always request (for) wellness programmes in their tour packages”.

17 Essential Travel Hacks For Your Tropical Vacation To Bali

A village in Bali

The Southeast Asian nation of Indonesia is a dream come true for lovers of islands (we don't mean this site; we already know everyone loves us!). It's home to more than 17,000 of them, after all, spreading all the way from areas west of Singapore to other isles that are close to Australia. Among them is Raja Ampat,  a little-known archipelago with surreal beauty , and Bali, an island predominantly Hindu that welcomes millions of visitors each month.

The island is well-accustomed to tourism — we know, we've visited it on multiple occasions — and offers travelers the chance to see ornate temples by the sea, striking countryside, fine beaches, and  stay at great beach resorts.  For some, it's paradise. While the locals are very much used to outsiders zipping along their streets on scooters, hanging out at cafes, restaurants, and bars, and catching the waves on a surfboard, there are some things that any traveler should be aware of before a trip to the island. Take note, and your next visit to the "Island of the Gods" should be all the more enjoyable.

Bring a travel adapter

Selection of travel adapters

U.S. electrical goods have two-pin plugs that slot into wall sockets (some also have three pins), and the same is true for Bali. The problem is that the two pins in Indonesia are a different shape from those in the U.S. — rounded instead of flat — so you will need to carry an adapter. Standard multi-country travel adapters are available in stores and, of course, online, and they are definitely a smart accessory to have if you travel regularly.

However, they are a little bulky and can take up valuable space if you want to pack just one carry-on for a week-long vacation. A direct adapter specifically for this type of outlet (Type C or F) is smaller and can be purchased in advance, or you can try to source one when you arrive. Also, note that Bali's electricity courses through its wires at 230 volts. For small electronics, like laptops, tablets, and phones, the adapter can handle this higher voltage (U.S. current is 110 volts), but for larger appliances, you will also need a converter.

Avoid the island from November through April

Bali countryside in rainy season

There's a good chance that you will spend a sizable chunk of your time in Bali outdoors. That could be for anything from flitting between small boutiques in the neighborhood Canggu, lounging on the long beach in Seminyak, visiting one of the island's many temples  (though avoid the one that is a total tourist trap), or admiring the verdant, hilly countryside around Ubud. All of that is best done when the conditions are reliably sunny and dry, and for that, you should not book a trip between November and April.

This period is the rainy season in Bali, and while this doesn't mean it will rain all day or even every day, the rain is consistent enough to make being outside unpleasant. The most intense rain generally occurs in December and January. There is one benefit of visiting during the wet season, though — you will encounter fewer tourists and might be able to snag cheaper room rates.  So, perhaps, if you are adventurous enough, don't snub this less-crowded season and book a trip to Bali .

Choose the appropriate location

Street in Kuta, Bali

At more than 2,200 square miles, Bali is larger than the state of Delaware. Given its dimensions, it shouldn't come as a surprise that different regions of the island have a wildly unique feel and ambience. Some parts are associated with mass tourism, but others are much more peaceful — generally, this equation correlates to distance from the airport.

If you want action, lots of shops, places to eat, and a range of offerings to keep you entertained, think about a destination nearer the airport in the island's south. These include Kuta and Legian; Seminyak and Jimbaran are popular with travelers but more upscale. More tranquil Ubud, in the center of the island, is home to many yoga retreats and surrounded by beautiful rice paddies that we've had the good fortune to see. If you really want to get away from the tourists, head to the north of the island, where the atmosphere is slower, more laid-back, and primed for relaxing.

Don't rent a car

Traffic in Bali

Driving in Bali is no fun, and the traffic can be horrendous. Explaining the situation, an expat who has lived in Indonesia for a decade wrote on the subreddit  r/bali , "I own a car I drive regularly, and I never driven a car in Bali and can't think of a circumstance that would push me to. Traffic conditions are already crazy where I live, but Bali is next level crazy [sic]." There are scooters and motorbikes everywhere, some roads are very narrow, and traffic jams are frequent, especially in the high tourist areas.

That said, many visitors rent a scooter, which can be a convenient way of shuttling around the island and is cheap, often costing less than $10 a day. But an easier option is to get cabs or rides on the back of a motorbike (sounds scarier than it is). For this, download the apps GoJek and Grab (the latter is like Uber), which are ride-sharing services that are based in Southeast Asia — GoJek is an Indonesian company, while Grab is headquartered in Singapore.

Get a local SIM

Tourists buying Bali SIM card

Roaming plans can be expensive, and with prices of $5 per day, for instance, not seeming like a lot, it adds up when you calculate the total for a two-week vacation. A much smarter option is to get a SIM card offered by an Indonesian carrier. They are ridiculously cheap and are available all over the place, even at the airport on arrival. A few carriers dominate the market, such as Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, Telkomsel, and XL Axiata. Using any of them should suffice — just go for the one that offers the best deal at the time.

Getting a SIM is effortless. There are booths near the arrivals area at the airport (vendors often sell a tourist SIM, but this isn't always the best deal available), cellular stores around the island, local cellphone shops and booths, and even people on the streets hawking SIMs. Just be sure that the card connects to the provider before handing over your cash.

Eat local food

Dishes at Balinese feast

Since tourism is so prevalent in Bali, you'll find a Hard Rock Cafe, Pizza Hut, and the usual burgers-and-fries fast-food joints. In some of the more touristy areas, you'll discover places serving Italian, Japanese, and even South American food. But why would you eat these when the island has its own rich culinary traditions? Bali has a plethora of its own unique dishes, ones that you might not even find in other parts of Indonesia. Lawar, for example, combines meat, vegetables, and coconut in one hearty plate.

The salad urab bathes vegetables like cabbage and spinach in a dressing packed with ingredients, shallot, chili, coconut, and lime juice among them. And the most famous dish might be Babi guling, or suckling pig, where the meat is roasted with spices and comes out crispy, a pleasing contrast to the rice it usually accompanies. Warungs, or small locally run shops that prepare food, are great places to sample these local delights.

Embrace its nature

Rice paddies near Ubud, Bali

Get your camera ready because some parts of this island are spectacular. Once you've seen the terraced rice paddies around Ubud, for instance, you'll never forget them, and thanks to your phone, you'll never have to. Other pieces of the great outdoors are equally breathtaking. While it can be tempting to hang out in tourist areas and spend your trip going to breakfast, the beach for relaxation, a café for lunch, a nice restaurant for dinner, and then a bar or club to close the day, there's so much more to Bali that food and entertainment. Explore the varied geography of the island and take advantage of the setting.

You'll get to see the bright green paddies, for starters. There are also areas of mangrove forest, sections of mountains, dense, humid jungles, steep cliffs (some with a temple on top) that look over crashing waves, and lots of beaches. And within those rich environments, visitors will be able to spot a range of wildlife, especially birds.

Slather on sunblock generously

Uluwatu Temple in Bali

Bali isn't far south of the Equator, and one thing you can be guaranteed of is sunlight. Strong sun all year round, even in the wet season when the pulsing rays peek out from behind the clouds. Since you'll hopefully be spending good portions of your trip outside, enjoying the island's many exterior treasures, you'll be exposed to that sun frequently. It is at its most brutal from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so if you want to avoid the worst of it, minimize your exposure to it during those hours.

Whenever you are out, cover yourself in sunblock. Wear broad-brimmed hats, and definitely carry sunglasses with you everywhere. Getting sunburned is very painful and can have long-term consequences. Additionally, dehydration is a risk, so drink plenty of water throughout the day. Just be sure that it isn't straight from the faucet, as Balinese tap water isn't treated enough to be potable.

Learn some lingo

Sign for beach in Bali

While the island is an old hand with tourists, and many locals can speak some English, it's handy to learn a few phrases of Bahasa (the national Indonesian language) and even Balinese. In some parts of the island, there are locals who don't speak a lick of English, so a few choice phrases will pay dividends. Locals will appreciate your effort if you try to communicate in their language; it shows respect for and acknowledgment of their culture.

In Balinese, we'd recommend learning at least one way of saying, "How are you?" (Ken-ken kabare?), to which the answer is "I am fine" (Tiyang becik-becik) and "thank you" (Suksma). Other phrases, such as greetings, ordering food, and counting, are useful, and you can easily find tutorials on them online. Note that in Indonesian languages, the letter "c" is pronounced as "ch," so "becik-becik" above would sound out as "bechik-bechik."

Prepare to bargain

Friend shopping in Bali

In Bali, you'll come across some shops that are known as "fixed-price." The name says it all, namely that the price you see marked on an item is the amount you will pay. Elsewhere, you have the opportunity to bargain and haggle for an item and hopefully settle on a price that you are happy with. You might want to purchase some souvenirs on the trip, for instance, or buy some jewelry for yourself or a loved one. These transactions might take place in a market or a street stall, places to find a great deal, and where you should always bargain.

You can even haggle inside a bricks-and-mortar store. Bargaining is an ingrained part of the shopping landscape in Bali, and you can try your luck with anything, even a hotel room. But once you start, be reasonable in your demands and respect the seller. After all, the vendors have to make a living from what they sell to travelers like you.

Have cash ready

Indonesian rupiah bills

While U.S. dollars might be accepted in many places worldwide, especially in countries close to America, Indonesia isn't one of them. The local currency is known as the Indonesian rupiah, and the majority of payments are made with it. Credit and debit card payments are commonplace, but in certain instances, nothing beats cash. This is true for taxis you might hail in the street (GoJek and Grab can charge to a card you have on file, or you can opt to also pay in cash).

For entries to temples, if you need to pay for parking, or if you buy food at a street stall, then cash really is the only method to use. The easiest way to get it is via an ATM machine — there are some at the airport outside the arrival halls. Elsewhere, try to use machines that are inside banks, as some exterior ATM machines are compromised by criminals who use card skimmers.

Don't expose too much skin

Couple in Bali greeting guests

In addition to the real chance of sun damage when you flash the flesh in Bali, dressing modestly is respectful of island norms. Bali is a conservative place — you won't see locals wearing shorts, for instance, even though it's hot and humid — and away from the beach, you should certainly cover up. We're not saying that you should be covered from head to toe, but dress sensibly when walking around town or when going to the shops, not in the way that you would if you were partying on the beach.

Loose, flowing cotton and linen clothing is a good choice, especially anything that covers the shoulders, upper arms, and most of the leg. It's essential to have clothing that lets your skin breathe because it's hot and humid in Bali, whatever the season, and you will definitely sweat more than you care to remember. The only time you should cover up a bit more comprehensively is when you visit a temple — sleeveless tops or anything where your shoulders and upper arms are uncovered might bar you from entry.

Prepare for mosquitoes

Mosquito coil for repelling insects

While mosquitoes are a nuisance in some parts of the United States at specific times, in Bali, they are a constant. And in addition to blessing our skins with itchy bites, they spread dengue and Zika. These are very real issues — in 2016, 20,000 people in Bali were hospitalized with dengue. The best solution is to avoid getting bitten at all. This means using bug spray when outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk, and when in heavily green areas.

When you are in your room or outdoors, burning coils can sometimes help to repel mosquitoes, but this can also cause respiratory issues. A less troublesome method is to use the small tablets that slot into contraptions that attach to the plug socket — they emit a scent that apparently keeps mosquitoes away. If you do get bitten, Bokashi oil is a local favorite to apply on bites to relieve the itchiness.

Wear shoes that are easy to remove

Shoes on shelves in Bali

For small businesses, you may have to take off your shoes when you enter — examples can include a warung or a spa — so packing shoes that aren't a pain to remove will make life a lot easier. It will be pretty obvious when you do have to take them off because you'll see a pile of shoes outside the shop. For large supermarkets, grocery stores, souvenir shops, and places used by tourists, removing shoes will not be necessary.

The same is true for large hotels, where everyone will be walking around with shoes on. If you have the good fortune to be invited to the home of a Balinese person, then you will definitely be expected to unsheathe your feet before entering the home. Of course, shoes are a definite no when walking into and around a temple.

Don't assume the cute monkeys are docile

Tourist with monkey in Bali

In the town of Ubud, the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a huge draw for tourists. It offers visitors the chance to see monkeys in the wild, in their own habitat, with the knowledge that the monkeys are approachable and relatively unfazed by human interlopers. It's a large forest, many acres in size, and has more than 1,000 monkeys that call the place home. More than being just a reserve where the monkeys are protected, it also holds spiritual significance to the Balinese, with the forest and the mammals considered sacred and temples among the trees, hence the name of the destination.

Seeing the monkeys wandering between people, staring inquisitively at visitors, and seeming to almost interact with tourists, as we've witnessed, can be quite heartwarming. But all these monkeys are still wild animals, and if they want your food, they can become quite aggressive, as a post on Nerd Nomads demonstrates. In it, the author describes how monkeys attacked tourists, in some instances drawing blood.

Step carefully

Street in Bali

Walking along sidewalks or crossing roads, we're generally used to flat, easy-to-maneuver surfaces that are reliably uniform. In Bali, though, that's not necessarily always the case. The sidewalks can be uneven and have slabs or pavers missing, making walking along them akin to navigating a minefield. Sometimes, prayer offerings might appear by the side of the road, near the gate to a temple, or outside somebody's home. Don't step on or over them, as that would be considered offensive.

Roads can be beset by potholes, and while cars might be able to rumble over them unaffected, you could easily twist an ankle by stepping into one. The bottom line is that you always need to be alert wherever you go, so don't amble down the street staring at your phone as you might do back home. And wear sturdy footwear, unless you're going to the beach, with a thick sole to protect you from unpredictable terrain.

Take a trip to the other islands

Beach on Nusa Penida

Bali is beautiful, but for the best beaches and a great excursion, take a day trip or overnight journey to one of the nearby islands, like Nusa Penida. That island is known for its sublime scenery, with high cliffs that plunge right down into the sea, long beaches with sugary sand, and seas that are clear, turquoise, and begging to be enjoyed by swimmers. Among the highlights is Kelingking Beach, where forested cliffs cup a crescent beach of white sand, and the sea rapidly transforms in color from light turquoise to dark blue.

The water is equally alluring for its marine life — Nusa Penida is a renowned spot for manta rays, and the sea off Crystal Bay is a fine snorkeling area. Other islands nearby that make for a good trip are Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, and even Lombok, which is like Bali's uncrowded sister. So, even on your Bali vacation, expect to spend time beyond Bali.

Pope Visits Indonesia, Where Muslim-Christian Harmony Is Under Strain

Indonesia is proud of its religious diversity and its reputation for tolerance, but minorities, including Catholics, still face discrimination.

A handful of worshipers, sitting or kneeling on pews laid out in front of an idol placed in an alcove in a stone wall.

By Sui-Lee Wee and Emma Bubola

Sui-Lee Wee traveled to the Catholic-majority island of Flores, and Emma Bubola visited Christian churches on the outskirts of Jakarta.

The hallelujahs rang out on Sunday from a small hall on the outskirts of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. The sounds from the Christian service could be heard within the green and orange mosque across the way, as a group of young girls in hijabs walked by.

On the surface, the scene was a reflection of the interfaith harmony that Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, is proud of. But the Christians were not in their own church. Earlier this year, their congregation’s building was stormed by dozens of angry Muslims, and now they were temporarily gathering in a government-owned building in a different area.

This is the complex reality awaiting Pope Francis as he begins a four-day trip to Indonesia on Tuesday, which will include an interfaith dialogue at the national mosque. There are many vibrant examples of how Christianity and Islam coexist in Indonesia — a dynamic that Francis wants to encourage — but at the same time, religious minorities face discrimination.

By and large, Indonesian Muslims practice a moderate brand of Sunni Islam that is tolerant of other faiths. But other branches of Islam, notably the Shias and Ahmadiyyas, have long felt marginalized. And conservative strains of Islam have spread here in recent years, with one province, Aceh, having enforced Shariah law for nearly a decade.

In dozens of cities , young girls are pressured, bullied, and harassed to wear hijabs at schools and public spaces, Human Rights Watch has documented .

With the rise of conservative Islam, some believers in minority faiths say, the space for religious freedom in Indonesia has shrunk.

The Christians who met on Sunday in Tangerang, the city on the outskirts of Jakarta, had been attacked in their building in March as children prepared costumes for an Easter show. They were told that they could not have a church in a Muslim area, members of the community said.

Last year, there were 329 acts of violence against religious minorities, nearly one per day, according to the Setara Institute for Democracy and Peace, a human rights watchdog. There has been deadly violence in the past, including bombings at churches.

The Indonesian government officially recognizes six faiths: Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confucianism. It has adopted some measures to protect religious freedom, like forbidding schools to make hijabs compulsory. But some minorities say those protections aren’t honored in practice and that parts of Indonesian law effectively discriminate against them.

The biggest issue has been the building of houses of worship. To do so, religious groups have to get the signatures of 60 people from other faiths in the community, as well as approval from the local interfaith council, which is made up of religious leaders but almost always dominated by Muslims. This, critics say, effectively gives Muslims veto power.

Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo, the archbishop of Jakarta, downplayed the issue of church construction being blocked, saying that such incidents largely came down to vote baiting by Muslim politicians. The bigger challenges facing the Catholic Church in Indonesia, he said, are ones that face the nation as a whole: corruption, threats to democracy and income inequality.

Still, the Christian community in Tangerang has not been able to get even half of the 60 signatures for their church, members said.

“We have been independent for 79 years, but for me it is a half-independence,” said Oktaviyanto M.I. Pardede, 59, a leader of the congregation. “Why am I still being colonized by my own people, why can’t I practice my religion freely?”

The Vatican was one of the first states to recognize Indonesia’s independence after it became free of Dutch rule in 1947, and the two have maintained close ties ever since.

Yet when Pope John Paul II visited in 1989, he was met with protests because of his faith. Two decades later, when President Barack Obama visited the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, the national mosque, many Muslims asked why a practicing Christian was being allowed into their house of worship.

But the reaction to Francis’s trip — part of his outreach to what he calls “the peripheries” of Catholicism — has been different.

“I think it’s a very important visit,” said Nurlaila, a Muslim woman who, like many Indonesians, goes by one name, and who had just finished praying at the Istiqlal Mosque.

Much of the credit for changing attitudes has gone to the Nahdlatul Ulama, the largest Muslim social organization in the world, with some 150 million members. Its leader, Yahya Cholil Staquf , said the group had protected churches from extremist groups and lobbied local officials to let them be built.

Three percent of Indonesia’s 280 million people are Catholics, but they have a substantial presence in some parts of the country, like the eastern island of Flores, where theirs is the dominant faith. Nationwide, Protestants account for 10 percent of the population.

Nasaruddin Umar, the grand imam of the Istiqlal Mosque, said Catholics had offered to donate animals to the mosque to be sacrificed during the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.

The grand imam pushed for the construction of a “tunnel of friendship” to connect the Istiqlal Mosque and the nearby Jakarta Cathedral. On Thursday, Francis will visit the Istiqlal for an interfaith dialogue, and mosque officials hope he will see the tunnel.

Such blending of religions is not unusual in Indonesia.

On a recent Friday night, Diah Purwanti, 47, laid out her prayer mat in the presence of a picture of Jesus. Raised a Catholic, she had converted to Islam after marrying a Muslim man. Her parents were Muslims who had converted to Catholicism, and one of her brothers is studying to be a Jesuit priest. As children, they celebrated both Eid and Christmas.

But some worshipers see a contradiction between their own experience and Indonesia’s image as a multicultural, tolerant place.

“Unity is the foundation of the country,” said Manav Hardinata, 23, whose Lutheran community has not been allowed to build a house of worship. “But here it is a competition, they treat us as if we want to take their people.”

Though they were Lutherans, not Catholics, many of the worshipers in Tangerang were hopeful and excited about the pope’s visit.

“We are hoping that it will bring changes to this issue,” said Robert Sinaga, 62. “His message is a message of community.”

On Sunday evening in Bekasi, another suburb of Jakarta, the Muslim call to prayer could be heard from the Catholic church Santa Clara, as a priest prepared for communion.

After a 17-year wait, Santa Clara received a permit to begin building in 2015, said Rasnius Pasaribu, the coordinator of the church’s construction committee. But thousands of Muslims protested the project at the local city hall. So Mr. Pasaribu’s committee agreed to make changes to the church’s design.

From the highway, Santa Clara, a sprawling white complex with a congregation of 10,000, does not look like a church. It cannot display a cross or a bell there. Instead, its facade, and its statue of the Madonna, enclosed in a cave of rose petals, lie toward the back of the compound.

Still, Mr. Pasaribu said: “We are happy. It’s amazing that we can pray in a church.”
