Visiting the American side of Niagara Falls is the best option if you’re looking to not only enjoy these stunning falls but also spend some time outdoors. The American Niagara Falls are less crowded than the Canada Niagara Falls , which claims to have the best views of the Horseshoe Falls. Still, there are plenty of fun things to do in Niagara Falls NY, so I’m sure you won’t be disappointed if you choose this side of the falls.

Besides, there is no doubt that it’s one of the most popular things to do in New York state. The falls are along the north side of the Niagara River, at the  Niagara Falls State Park , the most important place to visit in Niagara Falls, NY, and the oldest state park in the USA.

We visited it in July and booked this half-day tour that included the core Niagara Falls New York attractions like the Cave of the Winds and the Maid of the Mist . After that, we moved to the Canadian side, where we spent the night and watched the fireworks. If you can also visit both sides, check out our ultimate guide to visiting Niagara Falls .

In this article, which focuses only on the American side, I will share the top 20 Niagara Falls, NY attractions  with you!

1. Terrapin Point at Goat Island, the best place to see the Horseshoe Falls from the US side

No one lives on  Goat Island , but it’s a popular place with tourists for a good reason. It’s where you’ll find  Terrapin Point , one of the  best places to see Niagara Falls’ USA side , particularly Horseshoe Falls.

Terrapin Point is the top viewpoint from Goat Island and is at the western end of the Island. It’s an awesome  place to see in Niagara Falls, USA  because you get such a unique view. As you stand against the railing, you can look down at the Horseshoe Falls cascading below. You can also look out over the Niagara Gorge and see the remainder of the falls in the distance.

From 1833 to 1873, the Terrapin Tower lighthouse stood at this lookout point, but it was blown up after people complained that it disrupted views of the falls.

Goat Island is in the Niagara River and is easily accessible via two bridges. The entire area is full of forests and woods, as well as a network of walking paths. You can also find parking lots here.

2. Cave of the Winds, one of the top-rated Niagara Falls attractions in NY

The  Cave of the Winds  is a prime  attraction at Niagara Falls, NY , and something to do if you’re a daredevil. Back in the 1830s, a natural cave was discovered behind the Bridal Veil Falls, and people began touring the area.

It wasn’t until the 1920s that the attraction took tourists around the front of Bridal Veil Falls instead of behind it. Either way, it’s quite a thrill and one of the coolest  things to do at Niagara Falls, New York  in the summer.

When you first get to Cave of the Winds, you can explore  The World Changed Here Pavilion , an indoor multimedia exhibit explaining the history of the falls. You’ll also learn how Nikola Tesla designed the first hydro-electric power plant at Niagara Falls.

Once you’re ready to descend 175 feet to the Niagara Gorge, you’ll put on your poncho and take an elevator to the base of the Bridal Veil Falls. From there, you can walk out onto the deck and get as close to the waterfalls as you like. It’s called Cave of the Winds for a reason; it gets  very  windy! The roar of the water can produce hurricane-like conditions, including winds up to 68 mph.

The most intense part of the attraction is the Hurricane Deck. Here, you’ll stand just a few feet from the thunderous waterfalls. It’s definitely a  fun thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY.

Keep in mind that the Cave of the Winds requires timed tickets. The walkway is only open during the summer, but the indoor pavilion operates year-round. The attraction is part of the  half-day tour we took, which also includes the next attraction.

3. Maid of the Mist, the best Niagara Falls boat tour from New York

Another adrenaline-pumping  thing to do at Niagara Falls, NY  is to ride the  Maid of the Mist . The ride takes you through the Niagara Gorge on the American side, although it crosses over the Canadian border for a few minutes.

Standing on the upper deck of the Maid of the Mist might be the  best place to view Niagara Falls, USA . You’ll get up close and personal with the Horseshoe Falls as hundreds of thousands of gallons of water gush over the cliffs each second.

The original Maid of the Mist was an 1846 steamer ferry that linked Toronto and New York City, but it was replaced many years ago. Throughout the years, dozens of celebrities have taken the exciting journey to witness the beauty and power of the falls, including Marilyn Monroe, Stephen Hawking, Sylvester Stallone, and Princess Diana.

This boat ride is a must-do  Niagara Falls attraction in NY . Tours depart every 15 minutes, and the ride lasts for about 20 minutes. Remember that this ride is also included in this half-day tour .

4. Niagara Falls Helicopter Tour from the American side

For a totally unique way to see the falls, I highly recommend a  Niagara Falls helicopter tour from the American side.

This scenic flight takes off just a few miles from the falls and hovers as close as possible to all three waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls.

As you take off from the downtown helipad, you’ll ascend into the sky and fly over the majestic falls. Observe the Niagara River from an entirely new perspective and get spectacular photos of the gorge and rapids.

You’ll also pass over the Rainbow Bridge, Goat Island, and Three Sisters Islands. Take in the stunning scenery and large swaths of swirling blue water from 2,500 feet up. On sunny days, you’re likely to see rainbows in the spray emanating from the falls, a truly magnificent sight.

This  scenic flight  is, without a doubt, the most exciting  thing to do at Niagara Falls, USA . I only wish it were a longer ride! If you want to go all-out,  this combo  includes the Cave of the Winds, the Maid of the Mist, lunch, and a private helicopter ride.

5. Prospect Point and the American Falls Viewing Area

Most postcards you see showing the  view from Niagara Falls, New York,  depict the views from  Prospect Point . That is because it’s the most popular spot to see the American Falls and Niagara Rapids.

From the viewing platform, you can watch the Niagara River drop 50 feet as it rushes closer to the edge of the American Falls. From there, the water pours over the cliff as clouds of mist rise into the air. The entire scene is something you must see to believe.

5. Prospect Point and the American Falls Viewing Area, a great place to go in Niagara Falls NY

Plan to spend some time here to take in all the sights. There are a few viewing platforms, but they can get crowded. However, there are benches where you can rest until a spot clears up. The state renovated the area in 2013, so it has improved walkways.

Prospect Point is a hub for several  things to do on Niagara Falls’ American side . For example, this is where you can find the Maid of the Mist entry point, the Adventure Theater, and the Visitors Center. This is also where you’ll find the Niagara Observation Tower, which I’ll talk about next.

6. Niagara Falls Observation Tower, the best view of Niagara Falls from NY

Niagara Falls Observation Tower  is hands down, the  best way to see Niagara Falls from New York . It’s also known as the Prospect Point Observation Tower because it’s at the Prospect Point viewing area.

The 282-foot Tower is impossible to miss and gives you unparalleled views of the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. You can step onto the extended platform, which juts out over Niagara Gorge, and get stunning views of the Horseshoe Falls in the distance.

The Tower is also the departure point for the Maid of the Mist boat ride. The elevator transports tourists to the base of the waterfall so they can board. However, anyone can go down to the bottom of the Tower to get a unique perspective of the Niagara Gorge and falls.

From here, you can see the moss-covered rocks and feel the sprinkle of mist on your face. This area is known as the “Crow’s Nest”, and while it may look rugged, there is a clear pathway leading to a flight of stairs, so there is nothing to worry about. Besides, it’s the  best place to view Niagara Falls USA  with fresh eyes. For nature lovers and birdwatchers, this area is also a prime location to spot bald eagles or peregrine falcons, so keep your eyes peeled!

There is no entrance fee to the Tower during the winter months. Otherwise, the price is $1.25 or free with a Maid of the Mist ticket. Keep in mind that while the Tower is open year-round, the extended viewing deck is weather-dependent.

7. Luna Island and the Bridal Veil Falls, another great place to visit in the US Niagara Falls

If you’re looking for  where to go in Niagara Falls, USA , you don’t have to look far to find  Luna Island . This tiny cliffside landmass is wedged between the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Although it’s small, it provides mighty views that you won’t get anywhere else.

Luna Island is just 350 feet long and 130 feet wide and sits at the northern tip of Goat Island. The island’s cliffs are made of thick dolomite limestone, and the area was once littered with white cedar trees and shrubs. It’s still a beautiful place, especially if you visit at sunset.

What makes Luna Island so spectacular are the great views from the pedestrian bridge. As you stand there and peer over the railing, you’ll marvel at the rushing rapids of the Niagara River. If you glance down, you can look over the Bridal Veil Falls and maybe see tourists at the Cave of the Winds attraction. It’s quite the view and a unique  thing to do on Niagara Falls’ NY side .

8. Niagara Adventure Theater, a popular place to visit in Niagara Falls, USA

The  Niagara Adventure Theater  is a nice  thing to do at Niagara Falls USA  when you need a break from the weather. The theater shows a 30-minute film called  Niagara: Legends of Adventure , which is available in six languages. Throughout the film, you’ll learn about the history of Niagara Falls, as well as some interesting tidbits that will give you a different way to see the falls.

The air-conditioned theater seats over 300 people and features a 45-foot-tall screen. The show plays every 45 minutes, so I wouldn’t plan for more than an hour here. It’s a  fun thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY  with family, plus it gives you a chance to take a breather.

As you watch the film, you’ll learn about the early settlers at Niagara Falls. Explore some of the mysteries and myths surrounding the falls, such as world-record tightrope walks and barrel trips over the falls. You’re sure to hear something interesting you didn’t know before.

The Adventure Theater is at the Niagara Falls Visitor Center, where you can get maps, brochures, souvenirs, and tour referrals and reservations. Also, the theater is included in the  Niagara   Falls USA Discovery Pass , which gives you 30% off admission at several  Niagara Falls, New York attractions .

9. Niagara Falls Fireworks from the American side

The #1 thing to do in  Niagara Falls, NY at night  is to watch the  fireworks and illumination display .

It’s also one of the most romantic things to do, and you shouldn’t be surprised if you see lots of couples sharing an intimate moment during the show. That said, the fireworks display is family-friendly and is the ideal way to end your day at the park.

This fabulous show is super popular, so I suggest finding a spot early to make sure you have a good view. The fireworks show, which has been going on for over 25 years, is visible from the American and Canadian sides. If you’re in the U.S., the best views are from Prospect Point or the Rainbow Bridge, although you’ll be able to see the fireworks from other places in the park.

9. Niagara Falls Fireworks, one of the best free things to do in Niagara Falls in New York

Another  fun thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY is to see the illuminated falls at night. The lights typically display a rainbow of colors, although the scheme changes for certain holidays and events.

The lights turn on at dusk and turn off between midnight and 2 a.m. The combination of the misty waterfalls and dreamy lights makes it one of the most beautiful  attractions in Niagara Falls, USA . Be sure to bring your camera!

10. Three Sisters Islands, a unique thing to do in Niagara Falls New York

You’ll never be left wondering  what to do around Niagara Falls, NY  because the area is rich in natural beauty. To prove my point, there are  Three Sisters Islands  off the southern shore of Goat Island.

This is a lesser-known  place to visit near Niagara Falls, USA  but it’s well worth a trip. The islands were originally known as the Moss Islands, but the name was changed to Three Sisters Islands in 1817.

Footbridges from Goat Island connect the small isles for easy access. Each of the islands has a beautiful landscape providing unique views of the Niagara River rapids upstream and the Horseshoe Falls. The walking paths around the island are wide and quite relaxing, perfect for a short detour from the main Niagara Falls NY attractions.

11. Niagara Gorge Discovery Center & Hiking Trails

Niagara Gorge Discovery Center is a child-friendly  museum in Niagara Falls, NY  with interactive exhibits that teach visitors about the area’s history and geology. Learn about how the last Ice Age created these magnificent waterfalls and how they continue to change to this day. There are also interesting displays about Nikola Tesla and the hydroelectric power station, as well as a 180° theater experience.

A hiking adventure is another fun  thing to do in Niagara Falls, USA, with kids . While not all the trails are suitable for youngsters, there are several paths starting at the  Niagara Gorge Trailhead Building , where hiking tours are available from May to October.

11. Niagara Gorge Discovery Center & Hiking Trails, one of the best things to do in Niagara Falls NY for families

The  Great Gorge Scenic Overlook Hike  is an easy one-hour path that gives you nice views without much work. The  Upper Great Gorge Hike is also beginner-friendly. It takes two hours to complete and follows the  Great Gorge Railway Trail , which is short but scenic.

For a more moderate hike, try the  Devil’s Hole Rapids and Giant Rock  trail, which takes about 2.5 hours to complete. The  Whirlpool Rapids Adventure Hike  is the most challenging and will require some trekking over boulders. It’ll take you to Whirlpool State Park, which I’ll talk about in the next section.

12. Whirlpool State Park, the most beautiful place to visit in Niagara Falls New York

Wondering  what to do at Niagara Falls, NY besides visiting the falls?  Whirlpool State Park  is one of the pretty areas you’ll find off the beaten path. If you want to get away from the crowds for a bit, I highly recommend checking this park out.

Whirlpool State Park is a scenic region covering nearly 110 acres. To get there, you can follow the  Niagara Gorge Rim Trail .

The park itself is a two-tiered area just north of the tourist center. The street level has beautiful overlooks where you can see the Niagara Gorge and rapids. But to get closer, go to the riverbank by taking the stairs down at the southern end of the park, next to the Whirlpool Bridge.

Here, you’ll get to witness the  Niagara Whirlpool , one of the most  fun things to do in Niagara Falls, NY . At its deepest, the whirlpool is 125 feet deep. It’s the result of the gorge creating a nearly 90° change in the water flow direction. Combined with the speed of the rapids (30-35 mph), it creates a natural whirlpool.

This is where the  Whirlpool Rapids Trail  meanders along the gorge and river. Another great thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY for families is to continue onto the  Devil’s Hole Trail , which makes a loop and returns to Whirlpool State Park.

13. Visit Devil’s Hole State Park, another thing to do near Niagara Falls, NY

Devil’s Hole State Park  is smaller and a bit further north, but still a great  Niagara USA attraction .

The area overlooks the Devil’s Hole Rapids and the lower Niagara Gorge. For the history buffs, this was the former site of a Native American port, although early European settlers fought for control of the region. Anyway, the area became a state park in 1924, making it one of the oldest in the country.

Here, you’ll get unique  Niagara Falls views from New York , although you’ll see the rapids more than the actual waterfalls. In fact, Devil’s Hole was the initial starting point of the falls before the escarpment eventually eroded. It’s still a sight to see, so take the Devil’s Hole Trail to get closer to the river and loop around to Whirlpool State Park to enjoy some great views.

A good portion of the park and trail is shrouded in tree canopies, so it offers respite from the heat if you’re traveling in the summer. This is one of the  places to visit near Niagara Falls USA  if you want to get up close and personal with the roaring rapids.

14. Whirlpool Jet Boat tour, one of the top-rated tourist attractions in Niagara Falls NY

If you travel here between May and October, a  Whirlpool Jet Boat Tour  is a top  thing to do on the American side of Niagara Falls . You’ve seen the Niagara Whirlpool, but only from the land; how about a boat ride right into the rapids?

This   Jet Boat tour  travels upriver into the Niagara Gorge, then to the Whirlpool, and through the Devil’s Hole Rapids before coming back to the dock. You’ll be about a mile from the falls, so you don’t have to worry about tumbling over the cascading water. However, bear in mind that you will be completely soaked from top to bottom, so bring a change of clothes and a towel.

The boat ride is a great family  attraction at Niagara Falls, USA,  and the perfect balance of thrilling excitement and safety. The boat captains are super skilled and can perform maneuvers like 360° turns to really get your adrenaline pumping.

The jet boat tour covers about 18 miles in 45 minutes, and along the way, your guide will tell you about the history and geology of your natural surroundings.

This  Niagara Falls New York attraction  is safe, but quite a rush, so be prepared!

15. Nikola Tesla Monument, an interesting place to visit on the American side of Niagara Falls

Not far from the Cave of the Winds attraction is the  Nikola Tesla Monument  on Goat Island. Tesla’s name is synonymous with futuristic electrical engineering, but many might not realize his story includes Niagara Falls.

In 1893, the Serbian-American inventor and engineer was called to Niagara Falls when the Cataract Construction Company wanted his advice on how to optimize their hydropower plant. His proposed plan of using an alternating current induction motor was a huge success, and part of the reason there are so many  things to do on Niagara Falls’ NY side .

The Nikola Tesla Monument was a gift to the United States from Yugoslavia in 1976 and remains a popular  Niagara Falls, New York attraction . The statue features a seated Tesla poring over blueprints for some type of project, perhaps the hydroelectric plant. The paper slightly droops between his hands, creating the perfect little seat for tourists who want a photo op with Tesla.

You can see the monument as you walk through the arch at Stedman’s Bluff. Another  place to visit near Niagara Falls, USA .

16. Dine at the Top of the Falls Restaurant, one of the best things to do in Niagara Falls NY for couples

If you want something to eat while visiting the American Niagara Falls, head to the  Top of the Falls Restaurant . It’s the only dining spot that overlooks the falls, making it a top  Niagara USA attraction .

The restaurant has a family-friendly atmosphere, although dining here is a nice  thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY for couples . The building has a semi-circular design with rows of tables lining the floor-to-ceiling windows. Also, since the restaurant is on the upper level, everyone gets exquisite, uninterrupted views of the falls while they dine.

The menu is a modern take on American favorites and some classic dishes. For example, you can order fish and chips, Niagara-inspired burgers, vegetarian dishes, craft beer, delectable desserts, and more. Through a partnership with Taste NY, many of the restaurant’s ingredients are locally sourced. Top of the Falls has a casual vibe and is moderately priced, so most visitors can afford to eat here.

This dining spot is only open May through September, but it’s the  best place to view Niagara Falls, USA  while staying comfortable and satiated.

17. Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino, the best thing to do in Niagara Falls New York at night

A visit to the  Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino  is something to do in Niagara Falls NY at night  if you’re looking for entertainment and nightlife.

The Seneca Casino was the state’s competitive response to Ontario, Canada’s two casinos. Formerly the Niagara Falls Convention & Civic Center, Seneca is now the largest New York resort outside of Manhattan. Here, you’ll find all kinds of  activities in Niagara Falls USA  for the adult crowd. The 147,000ft² casino has over 2,000 slot machines, nearly 100 gaming tables, live poker, and more.

It’s not all about gambling here either. You can take a break from the games and head to the resort’s  Seneca Niagara Events Center for a show. The 2,400-seat theater hosts musicians, comedians, concerts, and other performances.

For some rest and rejuvenation, check out the full-service spa or enjoy a delicious meal at one of the fine-dining spots. Take your pick from a diverse palate, including Asian, Italian, and classic American fare. There are also several high-end retail stores that you can peruse, including Swarovski.

The Seneca Resort offers plenty of  fun things to do near Niagara Falls, NY . When it’s time to call it a night, stay over at the hotel , which has over 600 rooms and suites. I’ll talk more about the accommodations a bit later.

18. Visit Old Fort Niagara, one of the best things to do on the American side of Niagara Falls

Visiting  Old Fort Niagara is one of the most popular  things to do around Niagara Falls, NY . Located in Youngstown, the colonial fortification sits at the edge of the Niagara River where it meets Lake Ontario. It’s about a 20-minute drive from the falls, but you can take this tour to visit it.

Old Fort Niagara is home to over 300 years of history, so it’s the perfect  Niagara Falls USA attraction for history buffs. The old “French Castle” was built by the French North American Empire back in 1726. The land was later seized by Great Britain, followed by the United States.

The  Visitors Center  doubles as a public museum where you can see over 100,000 artifacts, including arrowheads, weaponry, furniture, clothing, military accouterments, and the original War of 1812 Flag. Don’t forget to stop by the historic lighthouse, constructed in 1872, and keep an eye out for the supposed ghost that haunts the grounds. Legend says he’s a decapitated French soldier looking for his head.

The entire area is part of  Fort Niagara State Park , which provides plenty of recreational areas, including hiking paths. The stone entrance, the  Gate of the Five Nations , is named in honor of the Iroquois Confederacy.

19. Niagara Falls Shopping Outlet Tour on the US side

While I hope this won’t be the case, you might find yourself wondering  what to do at Niagara Falls, NY  on a rainy day. If bad weather threatens your trip, you could always visit the  Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls .

This shopping center is just 15 minutes outside of Niagara Falls State Park, so it’s an easy  thing to do around Niagara  on a whim. Situated near the U.S.-Canada border, it’s one of the largest indoor retail outlets in the United States, boasting over 200 stores.

As a fashion outlet, this center offers steep discounts on name-brand items and luxury gifts. Whether you want to shop for yourself or a loved one, you’ll find just about anything here. Some of the retailers here include Kate Spade, Nike Factory, Michael Kors, Under Armour, Columbia, and Vera Bradley.

There is also a food court with casual dining options, and there is free Wi-Fi throughout the center. Shopaholics from Ontario and New York flock to the outlets for the best deals. If you need an  activity to do in Niagara Falls, NY when the weather’s bad, this tour  might be just the ticket.

20. Wine Tasting Tour Niagara Falls USA Side

A  wine tasting tour  is a unique  thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY  if you have the time. And if you’re a wine lover, of course!

Along with the Niagara Falls New York tourist attractions , the area has a fast-growing wine country. Touring Niagara’s wine trail may be the more laid-back activity you’re looking for, and there are several wineries within 30 minutes of the waterfalls.

The  Village Vineyard  and  Bella Rose Vineyard  are in nearby Lewiston, NY. The latter is the newest addition to the Niagara Wine Trail and offers a range of dry and sweet wines in addition to craft beers.

Long Cliff Winery  was established in 2011 and is a family-run operation. The 5-acre vineyard supplies the grapes for crowd favorites like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Riesling.  A Gust of Sun Winery  has a quaint, homey feel and is owned by a wine aficionado couple.

There are two award-winning wineries located a bit further from Niagara Falls.  Arrowhead Spring Vineyard  in Lockport offers sustainably made Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and more.  Schulze Vineyards and Winery  in Burt is a family-run farm on the shores of Lake Ontario and well worth the trip.

This wine tasting tour  will take you to four or more vineyards, where you can walk through the groves and enjoy a sip or two of your favorite wine. I think this is a nice  thing for couples to do in Niagara Falls, NY , but it would also make a fun girls day.

To make the most of our time, we hopped in the car right after work and arrived at Niagara Falls, New York at night. After a night of rest, we were able to get up early the next day and have all day to see the  Niagara Falls, New York attractions  before heading to the Canadian side for the fireworks.

On the American side of Niagara Falls, we stayed at the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino , and we loved it. We’ll be staying there again and recommend you check it out.

The   Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino  is one of the best hotels to stay in while visiting New York’s Niagara Falls. The resort includes a casino, fitness center, sauna, massage services, a hot tub, an indoor pool, a cafeteria, and several restaurants. Our room was beautiful and immaculate. It’s all-around one of the best hotels on the American side of Niagara Falls.

Best of all, it only took us 20 minutes to walk to Terrapin Point, one of the top  places to visit near Niagara Falls, USA . If you stay at this hotel, I suggest requesting a room on an upper floor. While you can’t see the falls directly from the hotel, you’ll get beautiful views. Plus, you can see the nighttime fireworks from your room, which is convenient if you don’t feel like going out!

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls

If you’re looking for another good hotel to stay at in Niagara Falls, USA, the   Hyatt Place Niagara Falls  is a great option.

This accommodation is located a little closer to Niagara Falls on the U.S. side, which is very convenient. Also, it is next to Old Falls Street, a small entertainment district where you’ll find great good, shopping, shows, and family activities. If you’re not sure  what to do in Niagara Falls, New York , you can always go there.

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls, a good hotel in Niagara Falls, USA

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls is also close to the Rainbow Bridge, which you can take to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

While the prices are similar, this hotel isn’t as nice as the Seneca Resort, but it’s still a good option if you need a place to stay overnight.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Niagara Falls New York

The   DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Niagara Falls New York   is another accommodation that I recommend on the American side of Niagara Falls. While it’s a bit further away than the previous two hotels, the location is still very good.

The rooms come with nice amenities and they’re very spacious. Some of the rooms offer lovely views of the Niagara River, while others overlook the city. I suggest requesting a riverside room, as it’s a more pleasant view.

Overall, this is a hotel in Niagara Falls, USA, that you can book without hesitation. It’s comfortable, affordable, and clean.

Sheraton Niagara Falls

The   Sheraton Niagara Falls   is one of the hotels in Niagara Falls, New York, that I recommend if you want to be close to the falls without breaking the bank. While it’s not the cheapest option, the price is quite good for the location.

Also, the hotel has a connective corridor to the Seneca Resort, so it’s super easy to go to the casino and enjoy some of the facilities.

Sheraton Niagara Falls, a place to stay in Niagara Falls, USA

The unique thing about the Sheraton hotel is its Reed Beach Club, which has the largest indoor pool in Niagara Falls. So, not only is this a good place to get some rest, but it’s got plenty of amenities to keep you entertained during your stay.

Wyndham Garden at Niagara Falls

The last hotel that I recommend is the  Wyndham Garden at Niagara Falls , which is a great option for travelers on a budget.

For an inexpensive hotel in Niagara Falls, USA, the location isn’t bad at all. Plus, it’s the best choice if you’re planning on walking over to the Canadian side of the falls since it’s just five minutes from the bridge.

If you don’t know how to get to the American side of Niagara Falls, I’ll go over all the options here.

First, the easiest way to get there is usually to drive. We took our car to Niagara Falls, NY, but you could also rent a car. We even have a guide to   finding cheap rental cars . There are lots of  places to visit near Niagara Falls, USA , so having a vehicle is an advantage.

If you’re traveling in New York City and don’t want to drive 6+ hours to Niagara Falls (it’s one of the most popular road trips from NYC ), I suggest taking a guided tour from NYC to Niaga Falls like  this one-day tour by bus. Fortunately, most of the tourist things to do around Niagara Falls in New York are fairly close to each other. You can walk just about everywhere, although there are shuttles to several attractions. We didn’t even have to move our car at all except at the end of our visit when we went to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

Walking is the most common way to get around in Niagara Falls State Park. If that’s going to be an issue for you or a family member, there are a few public transportation options. The  Niagara Scenic Trolley  runs through the park, and the  NFTA transit network  circulates through the entire city.

If you’re not sure how to get to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls from New York, the easiest way is by crossing the Rainbow Bridge. You can walk across the bridge or go by car or bus. Regardless of how you get across, you will be going into another country, so you’ll need to present the appropriate documents to cross the border. I also recommend having travel insurance for Canada , since you won’t have coverage with your primary medical insurance once you cross the border.

American citizens must have a valid U.S. passport or proof of permanent residence in the United States. If you’re a citizen of another country besides the United States, check   here   to see what documents you need.

Niagara Falls State Park is New York's oldest state park, opened in 1885, and home to a trio of impressive waterfalls and five islands on the Niagara River . Overall, the park covers 400 acres that include nature and bike trails, picnic facilities, and scenic photo-ops.

For those whose legs need a break, the park's vintage-style trolley brings visitors to the park's main attractions, like the Observation Tower , where there are panoramic views of all three falls. The Prospect Point Observation Tower is the best way to admire the full grandeur of the falls from Niagara Falls, NY. Located close enough to the falls to occasionally enjoy their refreshing spray, the tower is accessed via a broad observation deck that extends beyond the tower and over the water. From here, tourists can get a clear view of all three falls, including American Falls, as well as the mesmerizing rapids.

The boarding area for the Maid of the Mist tours is located at the base of the tower, accessed by high-speed elevator from the observation deck. The base of the tower also provides access to the Crow's Nest , a smaller observation tower located much closer to the falls. The Crow's Nest is accessed via a trail and set of stairs. This short hike is also located within an Audubon Important Bird Area, which is home to several varieties of gulls, as well as peregrine falcons and bald eagles.

The tower is located on the site of the former High Bank Industrial Mill, now considered part of the Historic Mill District that was active between 1861 and 1918. Like many river-side towns, the quick rise in manufacturing also led to a hasty increase in pollution. The New York State Reservation Park was established in 1885 in an attempt to preserve some of the area's natural beauty, but the hydroelectric and industrial businesses continued to grow until the early 20 th century, when pollution became too bad to ignore. By the 1940s, most of the mills had been removed.

The Maid of the Mist is the longest-running boat tour of the falls, in operation since 1846. It is also the most popular of attractions at Niagara Falls State Park , and for good reason. Tourists embark from the base of the Observation Tower , donning the blue ponchos and setting out in the river into Niagara Gorge on a double-decker boat.

The 30-minute tour visits both American Falls and Horseshoe Falls , riding up close to the base where hundreds of thousands of gallons of water crash down each second. This unforgettable tour operates in season from April through November, and tickets are purchased in the state park's visitor center.

From Prospect Point , a path crosses a bridge on to little Green Island , in the middle of the rapids just above the American Falls , and then over another bridge on to Goat Island, between the American and the Horseshoe Falls . On Goat Island , at the foot of the American Falls , is the entrance to the Cave of the Winds from where boardwalks lead to just under the falls.

Prior to descending the 175-feet into the gorge, visitors to the Cave of Winds are provided with ponchos and souvenir sandals - a must for anyone who doesn't want to spend the rest of the day in soggy shoes. Named the "hurricane deck" for its constant state of stormy conditions, the wooden platform stands only 20 feet from the tumbling water of Bridal Veil Falls .

Tourists can also access Luna Island by gangway from the northern tip of Goat Island, and a network of walkways provide additional chances to see both American Falls and Horseshoe Falls from a different perspective.

Three miles below the American Falls, the river changes course again, forming a whirlpool in the great cauldron originally created by tectonic movements, then turning northeast over the Lower Rapids towards Lake Ontario . These rapids are some of the world's most dangerous, with 100,000 cubic feet of water moving through the narrow Whirlpool Gorge each second.

From the New York side of the river, visitors can hike down a series of paths and stairs to an observation point that was once a stop on the Great Gorge Railway. A more navigable way to view the whirlpool and rapids is the Whitewater Walk , which is wheelchair accessible, but does require a visit to Canada's Niagara Park in Ontario.

Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is also a popular way to view the falls from above, spanning the Niagara River between the United States and Canada.

The Rim Trail offers a range of stunning views, running south to north along the top edge of the gorge. It is designated as "easy," offering a well-tended gravel base, however it does include several sets of rather steep steps. The trail is 6.2 miles long one-way , beginning at the Niagara Gorge Trailhead Center (by the Discovery Center ) and ending by the Robert Moses Power Plant .

At the northernmost end of the trail, hikers can continue on Artpark Gorge Trail for another 1.3 miles (easy to moderate difficulty) to reach the Artpark State Park , which is just north of the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge .

River's Edge Trail is also located in this park, and as its name promises, it offers hikers the opportunity to see the river on its own level. This easy trail is only 1.2 miles and an excellent choice for those who might have difficulty on the other most challenging waterside trails.

Alternatively, hikers can double back and then diverge onto either the Robert Moses Recreation Trail (easy level), which traverses Deveaux Wood State Park , or the more challenging Devil's Hole Trail . The Robert Moses trail is fully paved and allows cycling, skating, and cross-country skiing in winter. It is 3.2 miles long and extends from its junction with the Rim Trail back to the Niagara Gorge Trailhead. The park offers guided tours from May through October, weather permitting.

Visitors who are looking for shorter paths that depart from the Trailhead Center have other options that explore the Niagara River Gorge. The Great Gorge Railway Trail (easy) is about 1.1 miles one-way , ending in a staircase that leads up to the Rim Trail; hikers can forego the stairs and double-back for a hike that's approximately two miles total. This trail descends from the trailhead gradually and offers great views near river level, as well as scenic views from overlooks.

The American Falls Gorge Trail (moderate) can only be accessed via the Railway Trail, extending along the water upstream to the Rainbow Bridge . It is about one mile round trip and offers great views of the Schoellkopf Power Station.

Devil's Hole State Park is named for its position along the Devil's Hole Rapids , which are located downstream from the Whirlpool and Whirlpool State Park . The Devil's Hole Trail is rated moderate; however, it includes a great deal of stairs and some rock fall risk since it leads down the embankment and along the gorge near the edge of the water.

This 1.25-mile trail is accessed via the Niagara Gorge Trail (Rim Trail) , either directly at its northern end or via the Whirlpool Rapids Trail to the south. Its proximity to the water at Devil's Hole Rapids makes it an excellent spot to appreciate the sheer magnitude and power of the water.

The Whirlpool Rapids Trail is the most difficult of the system's trails, including a steep staircase, a few areas with narrow passage, and some boulder hopping. It totals 1.3 miles one-way , but does not connect with any other trails at its southernmost end. Those on the Devil's Hole Trail can continue on this path upstream to enjoy the views of the Whirlpool and Whirlpool Rapids and then double back to return to the Rim Trail via the Rapids Trail staircase.

The Aquarium of Niagara is a fun diversion for families and a great option for chilly or rainy days. Here, you will find more than 200 species of aquatic animals, as well as 30 educational exhibits. Aquarium presentations include a sea lion show, harbor seal presentations, and the penguin feeding.

Visitors can also choose to have an animal encounter with a behind-the-scenes look at the care, training, and social lives of seals and Humboldt penguins. The aquarium also serves as an animal rescue center for injured wildlife.

The Castellani Art Museum was founded by the Castellani family in 1976 to further the study and appreciation of art at Niagara University and the region. The permanent collection includes more than 5,600 works in a wide range of media that dates from the 1850s to the present.

Located off Goat Island upstream of Horseshoe Falls , this group actually consists of four small islands. The three largest were named after the daughter of General Parkhurst Whitney (Asenath, Angeline, and Celinda Eliza), and the fourth is referred to as Little Brother Island or Solon.

The three larger islands can be accessed via footbridges from Goat Island; the path to the bridge is located near the Terrapin Point Viewing Area . Like a peaceful oasis, the islands feature picturesque stone walkways and cheerful foliage while giving visitors a unique perspective of the Upper Falls area.

During its industrial heyday, Niagara Falls was home to numerous hydroelectric power stations. Construction on the Schoellkopf Power Station began in 1905 and continued through 1924, at which point it was the largest of its kind in the world. It gained infamy on June 7, 1956, when a small seepage detected in the morning gave way to a collapse by the end of the day, destroying two-thirds of the plant in a massive rush. The station was not rebuilt, and today the site is a testament to the impressive and enduring power of water.

Niagara Falls Neighborhoods

Niagara Falls is three separate waterfalls that straddle the U.S.-Canada border; the American and Bridal Veil falls in New York state and the Horseshoe Falls (also called the Canadian Falls) in Ontario, Canada. The Horseshoe Falls are separated from the other two by Goat Island (part of the U.S.), which is accessible by car or foot and provides spectacular views of the rapids and drop-offs.

The American Falls

The American Falls are best seen from Prospect Point Park, which has a 282-foot-tall observation tower for visitors. The Maid of the Mist boat tours picks up passengers at the bottom of the falls.

The Bridal Veil Falls

The smallest of the three waterfalls, Bridal Veil Falls is sandwiched between New York's Luna Island on the east and Goat Island on the south. The Cave of the Winds gives visitors access to the base of the waterfall. An elevator goes from Goat Island to the base of the falls, allowing visitors to tread the wooden walkways to the "Hurricane Deck," where they will enjoy getting soaked by the waterfall's rushing water.

The Horseshoe Falls

The most impressive of the three is Horseshoe Falls, which sits nearly entirely within Canadian boundaries. Named for its curving shape, nearly 90% of the Niagara River tumbles over the falls, producing a heady amount of mist and an incredible photo backdrop. There are two ways to get up close to the Horseshoe Falls. The Maid of the Mist boat tours go to the base of the falls, while the Journey Behind the Falls attraction takes visitors 150 feet down the falls in elevators. Once off the elevators, visitors can walk through tunnels that lead to portals for excellent views of the gushing falls.

Although it welcomes a large number of tourists every year, Niagara Falls is still a relatively small and safe town. However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't use common sense. Keep a close eye on your personal items, especially in more crowded areas. You'll also want to exercise some caution around the falls themselves. They produce a large amount of mist, which can impose a slippery film on the walkways surrounding the falls. Wear shoes with traction, and hold on to the rails to avoid slipping.

About Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is one of the most iconic natural wonders in the world, located on the border between the United States and Canada. It is situated on the Niagara River, which connects Lake Erie to Lake Ontario , and serves as a breathtaking display of the power and beauty of nature, as well as serving a source of tremendous electrical power to the region. Comprised of three waterfalls—Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls—Niagara Falls attracts millions of visitors each year.

The largest and most impressive of the three falls is Horseshoe Falls, also known as Canadian Falls, as it is primarily located on the Canadian side of the border. Its distinctive shape resembles a horseshoe, and it measures approximately 2,600 feet (792 meters) in width and drops about 188 feet (57 meters). Horseshoe Falls is also the most powerful waterfall in North America, with an average flow rate of about 600,000 gallons (2,400 cubic meters) of water per second. The cascading water plunges about 188 feet (57 meters) down into the gorge below, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of mist, sound, and sheer force.

On the American side of the border, the second-largest cascade is American Falls, also known as Rainbow Falls. It spans approximately 1,060 feet (323 meters) in width and drops about  70 feet (21 meters) onto large mass of fallen boulders. Adjacent to American Falls is Bridal Veil Falls, which is much narrower and measures around  56 feet (17 meters) in width, falling the same height as Rainbow Falls. Although smaller in scale, these falls are no less captivating, and together they form a remarkable panorama of nature’s grandeur.

The awe-inspiring beauty of Niagara Falls is not limited to the sight of the cascading water alone. The sheer power of the falls creates a constant roar that can be heard from all around the neighboring cities of Niagara Falls, New York and Niagara Falls, Ontario. The mist generated by the crashing water creates a perpetual foggy atmosphere around the falls, often obscuring a large portion of each, while dampening the surround walkways and viewing areas. On sunny days, the mist often gives rise to rainbows, enhancing the ethereal experience for visitors.

To explore Niagara Falls up close, various vantage points are available. On the Canadian side, Queen Victoria Park offers stunning views and beautifully manicured gardens, allowing visitors to appreciate the falls from a safe distance. Those that want to get up close can take a “Journey Behind the Falls,” which not only fulfills the promise of leading visitors behind the great Horseshoe Falls, but into the gorge next tot he falls where the winds generated from the plunging water are an unforgettable force. The promenade along the Niagara Parkway in new York, known as the “Niagara Falls State Park” on the American side, also provides fantastic viewpoints and access to a breathtaking view from the observation tower. Park walkways lead visitors from the brink of the American Falls, onto Luna Island where they find themselves surrounded by both the American and the smaller Bridal Veil Falls.

One of the America’s oldest Attractions, the Maid of the Mist, operates on both sides of the border, taking visitors through the turbulent and frothy waters of the Niagara. directly to the base of the both waterfalls, often disappearing into the mist—an exhilarating, and must-see, experience for all visitors. For those looking for even more thrills, the Niagara Jet Boat Tour runs up the Niagara River through Devil’s Hole and into the infamous Niagara Whirlpool , roaring through deadly currents and crashing through waves with ease.

Popular for family trips and a time-honored American Honeymoon spot, Niagara Falls is in do doubt a “tourist trap.” Sprung up around the gorge are towering hotels, a Ferris wheel, casinos, eateries, haunted houses, wax museums, and gaudy entertainment attractions in all forms. It’s enough to keep you busy for a weekend if your wallet doesn’t empty before then. While most of modern development is concentrated on the Canadian side of the boarder, New York’s run down city still has a few competitive sights to attract tourists. Beyond the pop-tourism, to the region’s credit, it retains a lot of natural charm. From the Falls themselves, down the Niagara River are a series of nature parks fishing hotspots, and wineries leading to Lake Ontario and two beautiful and quiet villages on each side. Niagara-On-The-Lake, in Ontario, is a wonderful boutique shopping destination, and the host of the annual Shaw Festival. Youngstown, in New York, is home to the exceptional Fort Niagara State Park and Historic Site . With so many bright lights in loud distractions adjacent to Niagara Falls, it’s difficult for visitors to break away and explore the surrounding region to soak in the unforgettable experiences the entire Niagara Region has to offer, especially those pertaining to its quaint historical roots, so I made this guide, not only to highlight the the falls themselves (which you should definitely not miss) but to help you realize what else you could be missing.

The Three Waterfalls of Niagara (in detail)

AKA  Rainbow Falls.

Height:  188 ft (56 meters) tall at its highest point to the river. The free-fall to the rocks below varies between 75-110 feet (28-33.5 meters) with an average of about 85 feet (26 m). Roughly 10 feet taller than the Horseshoe Falls.

Width: 830 feet (253 meters) measured straight across the brink. If measured along the zigzag-like brink: 1,060 feet (323 meters) long.

Faces:  Northwest.

Plunge pool depth:  The boulders at the base of the falls fill in what could have been a pool as deep as the waterfall itself. The depth of the river increases dramatically just beyond the rocks. There’s no measurable pool below the falls, other than the river itself. A fall from this will most definitely mean death from smashing on the rocks below.

Flow:  140,000 gal/sec (18,700 cubic feet per second), excluding the flow through Bridal Veil Falls. The American/Bridal Veil Falls together carry about 10% of the total flow of Niagara Falls. The flow can dip to half during off-peak tourism months.

Location:  Between Prospect Point and Luna Island in Niagara Falls, NY, USA.

Number of daredevils who went over:  Zero.

AKA  Canadian Falls

Height:  Averaging 188 feet (57 meters) to the river below.

Width:  Measuring in a straight line from the edge on the American side to the edge of the Canadian side the length is 977 feet (298 meters). Following the crest of the falls around: 2,600 feet (792 meters).

Faces:  North.

Plunge pool depth: The falls ends in a 185 ft (57 meter) pool at its base. Although you cannot see the rock debris at the base of the falls like with Rainbow Falls, the water of the Horseshoe Falls does not fall directly into the plunge pool and in many sections, rock piles come very close to the surface throughout the pool. These hidden rocks, and some very strong currents, make this some one of the most dangerous sections of the Niagara River.

Flow:  600,000 gal/sec (2,400 cubic meters per second). Carries 90% of the total flow of Niagara Falls. The flow can dip to half during off-peak tourism months.

Location:  Between Terrapin Point on Goat Island in the USA and Table Rock in Canada. The US/Canadian border runs through the falls, with most of the falls on the Canadian side.

Number of daredevils that went over the falls:  14, with 6 dead.

AKA  Luna Falls, Iris Falls

Height:  181 ft (55 meters) tall at its highest point to the river below. The free-fall measures roughly 78 feet (24 m).

Width:  56 feet (17 meters) measured straight across the brink. The total width of the American and Bridal Veil Falls together is 1,100 feet (326 meters).

Plunge pool depth:  The rock debris at the base of the falls fills in what could have been a pool as deep as the falls are tall. The depth of the river increases dramatically as the distance away from the rock debris increases. In addition to the debris, there are the red wooden decks built for the Cave of the Winds tours.

Flow:  10,000 gal/sec (1,300 cubic feet per second). Rainbow/Bridal Veil Falls together carry about 10% of the total flow of Niagara Falls. The flow can dip to half during off-peak tourism months.

Location:  Immediately south of Rainbow Falls, between Luna Island and Goat Island in Niagara Falls, NY, USA.

Number of daredevils over:  Zero

The Niagara River

The Niagara River runs north 35 miles (56 kilometers), serving as a vital link between Lake Erie to Lake Ontario , and a natural border between the US and Canada. The Niagara River originates at the eastern end of Lake Erie near Buffalo, New York. It begins as a relatively calm and narrow stream, gradually widening as it progresses north. At around 6 miles, it splits around the massive Grand Island at Beaver Island State Park. Grand island, at 33.29 square miles (86.23 square kilometers), is home to 21,200 people. Here the border line, which usually bisects the river evenly, runs up the river branch on the west side of the island, putting the island completely within the US.

3 miles (5km) downstream from the island, the river splits again, forming Goat Island in New York and creating the Cascade Rapids, a dangerous stretch of whitewater created by the initial descent down Niagara Escarpment just above Niagara Falls. the Falls itself drops the river an average of 178 feet (54 meters) and forms the 7 mile (11 kilometer) long Niagara Gorge. The river reaches a maximum depth of 185 feet (57 meters) near the base of the falls.

2.5 miles (4 kilometers) north of the falls, the Niagara Gorge narrows and the river accelerates, forming class 6 rapids at the Niagara Whirlpool , some of the most dangerous waters in the world. Traveling at nearly 35 mph, with standing waves reaching 10-ft in height, it bends nearly 90 degrees a half mile later at the Whirlpool. The Niagara River then calms to a class 3 as it passes through Devil’s Hole and it’s smooth sailing and some of the best fishing in the region the remainder of its journey to Lake Ontario .

Fort Niagara State Park and Historic Site

The State Park section is an excellent recreation facility with excellent views of Lake Ontario. The Historic Site is a living museum with daily reenactments and interesting architecture. It’s only a short distance from the Falls.

Devil’s Hole State Park

The site of a bloody ambush on a British supply convoy, this interesting geologic feature in the Niagara Gorge has excellent hiking and fishing opportunities, as well as spectacular vistas. Great fishing as well!

Whirlpool State Park

Breathtaking views of the notorious Class V Whirlpool Rapids and the geologic wonder known as the Whirlpool. The terrain is rough and the water is extremely dangerous, but the view is oh so worth it. This park should not be missed!

What do you need to pack for niagara falls, safety tips for niagara falls, do you need a tour to visit niagara falls .

It’s on the New York and Canadian border along the Niagara river, which flows between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie (two of the Great Lakes). It’s in the westernmost part of New York State, which is part of the East Coast.

Niagara Falls to New York is about about 8 hours each way by car (without stopping) or about 10-12 hours with Megabus/public transit, so this is not a day trip from New York City.  It is a nice stopover if you’re traveling from New York to Toronto.  (Scroll to the bottom for a free map of Niagara Falls!)

Niagara Falls is actually composed of three waterfalls although the most famous waterfall is Horseshoe Falls. The combination of flow rate and height make the falls epic to see in person. This does not include the loud roar of the waterfall.

Niagara Falls is the perfect family getaway as there are lots of kid-friendly activities nearby and it will impress your kids (I promise!).  It’s a perfect day trip if you’re traveling in between the United States and Canada.

What to do in Niagara Falls and day trips from Niagara Falls

You will see many things to do in Niagara Falls while reading online… and while in Niagara Falls, you’ll find that Niagara Falls tourism is mostly unrelated to the falls. Just be aware of the tourist traps.

See Niagara Falls from both sides: American and Canadian!

Take the Maid of the Mist / Hornblower [Canadian side] or Cave of the Winds for a unique view of Niagara Falls.

Hornblower v. Maid of the Mist. Which one to choose?  If you’re trying to decide whether to take the  Hornblower  or Maid of the Mist, note that the Hornblower boat goes from the Canadian side while Maid of the Mist departs from the New York side.

Both boats follow the same route although the  Hornblower boats carry more passengers .  (You can purchase both tickets in advance.)

Take a day trip from Niagara Falls to  visit the adorable town of Niagara-on-the-Lake  for the summer Shakespeare festival and its famous ice wine. You can taste ice wine ( bring a designated driver! ) in Canada’s wine capital.  Ice wine is made by allowing the grapes to freeze on the vines, which makes the wine extra sweet–and very alcoholic.  ( You can take a day tour with ice wine tastings from the Canadian side, including a designated driver !)

See the Niagara Falls light show (at night). The schedule for the Falls Illuminationvaries throughout the year with the sunset, but if you’re taking a day trip, see if you can stick around for the magic of the lights!

For those with kids, add some of the many kid-friendly attractions in the area to your list.  One of the main attractions is the Fallsview water park.

Niagara Falls has a lot to offer for adults as well. You’ll find plenty of clubs/bars (admittedly with lots of 19 – year old Americans) and gambling.  There are two casinos in Niagara falls: Fallsview on the Canadian side and Seneca Niagara Casino on the New York Side.  Have a cocktail at the Sheraton bar overlooking the falls.

Where to stay in Niagara Falls? Hotels in Niagara Falls

You’ll find a large assortment of hotels for every budget in Niagara Falls, but hotels in Niagara Falls are most expensive in peak season (summer).  Prior to the advent of popularity of airplane travel among Americans, Niagara Falls was a major honeymoon destination, so you’ll still find some  cute and kitschy ‘50s motels  in Niagara Falls, Ontario for those looking for cheap hotels in Niagara Falls.

You’ll also find standard American hotels on both sides of the falls.  The Marriott  on the Canadian side is the well known hotel for its view of the falls.  For a 5* experience, consider staying at the  Sterling Inn & Spa .

If you’re interested in saving money, you can  stay in nearby Buffalo  (on the American side) after seeing the falls.

You’ll find many reasonable hotels (some in  historic buildings in Downtown Buffalo ), funky neighborhoods ( Elmwood Village and Allentown ) , and many reasonable food options. This includes Duff’s if you want to try the  best Buffalo wings in Buffalo! 

How long to spend at Niagara Falls? 

One day is all you need to visit Niagara Falls. (It is the perfect day trip from Toronto.) If you want to visit the ice wineries, you’ll need an extra day.  It’s possible to visit Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake in one day if you take a tour from Toronto!

Canadian side hands-down. The falls are magnificent, but you can only see the height/views of the falling water with a partial view…but the Canadian side of Niagara Falls gives you the epic view/feeling that made you want to visit.

If you don’t mind getting drenched in the midst (which gets  more intense as you get closer to Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side), you’ll feel like you’re in a superhero movie.

Is Niagara Falls a tourist trip? Should you go to Niagara Falls?

YES , but it depends how much you love waterfalls.  I’ve been to both sides many times, but honestly, I really do not like the American side and this is a sentiment I’ve heard from quite a few people.

One day itinerary for Niagara Falls

If you’re day-tripping from within the US with a car, park your car (bring cash to pay for parking!) on the American side and walk across the Rainbow Bridge (the Canadian/American pedestrian border crossing) to the Canadian side, which has an epic view of the falls.

Driving across can be time-consuming depending on the line at the Peace Bridge (especially around rush hour), so check the wait ahead although I’ve always found the pedestrian bridge much faster.

Buy tickets for Maid of the Mist /  Hornblower  as buy a cheap poncho if you don’t have one. (You can take the boat from either side.)

Walk around Clifton Hill (15 minutes) past all the tourist traps to enjoy the view of Horseshoe Falls.

Enjoy the view and catch the illumination show if you’re there around sunset.

Head back to the American side to enjoy the overlook over the American falls from Goat Island (New York side), which allows you to look STRAIGHT down the falls.

Food on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls

Do you love TGIF’s? Y ou’re in luck. If you can think of every single chain restaurant, …it’s in Clifton Hill (the touristic part of Niagara Falls).  I have heard that the new IHOP on the Canadian side has a nice view, but besides  Antica Pizzeria ,

I’d recommend  eating before  as you’ll pay tourist prices for food that you could get almost anywhere. There are more options as you get further from the touristy areas, but if you’re on foot, you will be limited by your choices.

You can check off your Canadian bucket list by trying poutine, which is french fries made with cheese curds and gravy, at  Smoke’s Poutinerie . (I know it sounds horrifying, but it is so delicious!) If you need a snack, visit the Canadian chain Tim Horton’s for some donuts and hot chocolate.

Food on the American side

Consider stopping by the Third Street Retreat for a cozy meal. Alternatively, you can picnic on Goat Island as well as eat at one of the cafes within Niagara Fall State Park.

If you have a car, stop off at  Wegmans supermarket  to stock up on picnic supplies or order a delicious handmade sub with special oil dressing. You can also get food to go from the buffet section OR the salad bar. It is truly the best supermarket in the area and it’s 24 hours with a fantastic selection of beer. (I love Wegmans!)

My local friend recommends visiting  The Como Restaurant  it is a classic Niagara Falls institution famous for Italian food.  Be sure to try the garlic bread.

Otherwise, stop off at  Dicamillo Bread  in Niagara Falls for their bread and their cannolis, as recommended by my friend who spent a lot of her childhood in Niagara Falls.

When is the best time to visit Niagara Falls?  ​

Summer without question. Although you’ll have the crowds, it is very windy at Niagara Falls and the extra spray can feel really good on a hot day.

In winter, you’ll just be ready to curl up with a hot chocolate away from the falls after snapping a photo, however if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see the falls frozen over (which is a very rare occurrence).

Niagara Falls’ average temperature in December is 21 degrees F / -6 C in December…so imagine getting sprayed with freezing cold water in addition to being blown around by heavy winds while standing in a blizzard. (That sums up my feelings about visiting in winter.)

If you’re staying in Niagara Falls for 1-2 days, you don’t need a car.

The best airport for the United States to get to Niagara Falls is from  Niagara Falls International Airport  OR  Buffalo Niagara International Airport . Fares are usually cheaper from the Buffalo AIrport. From the Canadian side, you’ll want to fly into  Toronto International Airport.

If you fly into Buffalo Niagara International Airport, I strongly recommend renting a car. This area has public transit, but it is much easier to drive.

If you use public transit to get to Niagara Falls from Buffalo Airport, you will spend a lot of money on a taxi OR spend two hours on a bus (take the 24 towards Downtown Buffalo then transfer by the Greyhound Station [Washington St & South Division St] to the 40 bus to Niagara Falls. (It’s $2 that you can pay on the bus although be sure to ask for a transfer!) Note that the bus only runs 5am to midnight, so if you come in late, you cannot take the bus.

From Niagara Falls International AIrport to Niagara Falls, it will take one hour ($2) on the 55 bus to reach the American side of the falls.

You can also take the train or Megabus to get from Toronto to Niagara Falls, which will take about two hours. It’s much easier with a car.

If you’re going from New York to Niagara Falls without a car, you have four options.

• Take a Greyhound from New York City to Niagara Falls (with a transfer in Buffalo). (10 hours)
• Ride a Megabus towards Buffalo (with taking a Greyhound/public bus to Niagara Falls (12 hours)
• Take an Amtrak train from Penn Station (New York City) to Niagara Falls direct. (10 hours)
• Fly from New York (LGA) to Buffalo (BUF).  (5 hours)
• Your passport card (for Americans) OR passport to visit the Canadian side (and vice versa)
• A fully charged  camera  and  portable power bank  for your phone
• A  poncho  and/or waterproof bag if you’re planning on going Maid of the Mist / Hornblower
• Your hotel reservations if you’re crossing the border as immigration officials often ask you how long you’ll be visiting and a hotel reservation can speed things up considerably
• Warm clothes in winter, especially a  good winter jacket !
• Sneakers as the footpath can very slippery year-round, but especially so in winter.
• Picnic supplies if you’re on a budget

Do not dangle your camera or phone over the edge. I promise this will not end well. Hold your phone tight, especially in winter.

Be careful in Niagara Falls, especially the American side. I wish I was kidding, but it has one of the highest violent crime rates in the United States.

High crime is an issue primarily for residents, but still, be careful on the New York side of Niagara Falls. This includes not leaving your valuables visible in the car, which is a bad idea  anywhere .

Don’t come hungry and/or broke. You’ll pay tourist prices and …well, it’s just best to eat before.

Wear sneakers as the footpaths near the falls can be very icy in winter or just slippery in summer.

No, you do not need a tour for your trip to Niagara Falls, however it is not a “convenient” place to visit if you’re doing a larger US trip.  Unless you’re passing through this area OR have it very high on your bucket list, it is a bit expensive to visit for one day. If you have limited time and this is high on your bucket list, it might be worth it to take a tour package to Niagara Falls.

I agree with you. I have been and it wasn’t really my thing. I mean it was pretty but the American side has strip malls right near the falls. Kind of detracts from the beauty. But this guide is great and I will tell anyone going to check it out. So helpful!

The pictures are STUNNING! I have never been to Niagara Falls, but I hope to go one day. I knew that the falls crossed the borders, but I didn’t realize that there was a difference in the views/experience! Truly informative guide that I plan to save for when I am able to go on the trip. This is a really useful post! I’ve visited Niagara Falls but from the Canadian side only – it was a day trip from Toronto which included Niagara-on-the-Lake and a wine tasting, as well as plenty of time at the falls. Interesting to hear more about the American side which I only saw from the boat!

Yes, it’s a tourist trap, but you can tune that out (mostly) and the falls really are spectacular. Definitely worth the trip.

Oh man, Nigara Falls has been on my bucket list for such a long time. I’m definitely thinking that the Canadian side is a lot more impressive than the US side. This guide is awesome! I think Niagara Falls is a fun place to visit every once in a while if you’re not too far away. I spent a couple of weeks in Buffalo a while ago, so my boyfriend met me there for the weekend since he’d never been before. We had a pretty good time even though a lot of the touristy stuff was closed for the winter. I would second the Smoke’s Poutinerie recommendation, as I’ve been obsessed with it since trying some of their offerings in Ottawa last year. There’s talk of them opening a location in Detroit soon, and I’m praying that the food gods make it happen so I can eat it all the time.

I wish I had read this guide before our first visit!! Niagara Falls was the first place my partner and I went to on our first ever travels together and is actually where we said we loved each other for the first time! As cheesy and busy as the Canadian side was in the height of summer, I actually loved spending the day doing the various activities around the falls and then the evenings sipping weird and wonderful cocktails and visiting the silly wax museums and mini golf course! 🙂

This is a great guide! I was so bummed when the Maid of the Mist left the Canadian side and they replaced it with the “hornblower” boat! I loved dawning the blue poncho and getting wet like Bruce Almighty! You need to try the Windows restaurant at the Sheraton! BEST beetroot soup in the world.

Niagara Falls is amazing! I saw it 6 years ago from the Canadian side with my family in the peak summer holiday season. Though touristy, the falls and The Maid of the Mist boat tour really gets up close to the falls and really beautiful. This is one of those places that you have to see in person.

Some of the hotels have shuttles from the buffalo airport to the Canadian side. We waited to rent a car when we got to the hotel.

We recently went to the American side (April 25-28, 2019). I was shocked to see how dirty the city was. Trash just blew across the streets and no one seemed to care. I thought at least the hotel staff would clean up in front of their building but there was bags, napkins, and even a diaper rolling down the street. We stayed at the Sheraton and the Wyndam while in town. No wonder everyone says Canada is better, the American side is run down and looks like none of the tourist money is going back into it. Empty buildings, empty lots and a huge eye sore that use to be a large slide. Someone should take pride and put it back into making the American side a nice tourist attraction again. Next time my money will go to the Canadians.

Having gone to college in niagara falls over 40 years ago, i was shocked at the downtown niagara falls ny. took our 5 year old grandkids to NF last year. The state park on the American side is beautiful. Much nicer than when i was in college. Picnic on three sisters island. But we stayed in Canada. Red coach inn on the NY side is probably the only place i would stay. In canada you can pick from a travelodge right on Clifton hill or a high class hotel. I would suggest if you are spending a full day in canada, purchase an all day bus pass. Lots of walking back and forth. And yes walk over the rainbow bridge. But also on the american side is the cave of the winds tour and an overview to see the falls. It is beautiful in summer and a crystal wonderland in the winter. Kids will want to do everything on clifton hill so be prepared.

Thank you for the write up. To the point and one of the most helpful write ups I’ve found on the Falls. We’re stopping at the Falls as part of a Canadian road trip and was wondering how much days we’ll need. I know there are a lot of other attractions other than the Falls and I found articles advocating for 2-3 days but based on your article it does seem like a full day is enough. We’ll spend the extra day or two at Thousand Islands or Mont Tremblant instead!

I have a group of about 30 Sr. adults visiting the falls in Oct. We will be staying in NYC a few days and taking the Amtrak to Niagara, NY. The train gets in about 4:30 p.m. We are staying at the Sheraton on the Falls, Canadian side. Will we have time to see and do anything on the American side before crossing into Canada? From reading, there’s not much to see, but what is not to be missed on the American side? We will have the entire next day and night to explore the Canadian side, and our flight doesn’t leave from Buffalo until 5:30 on the following (3rd) day. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, or if you could recommend a guide.

Hi Becky, The Amtrak station is a bit of a walk from Goat Island and Cave of the Winds, but in theory, if you wanted to go, you could. I just think that it would be quite annoying to carry your luggage with you. The Lightshow can be seen from both sides and it’s nice at night.

I think that a day exploring Niagara Falls is more than enough and I’d recommend seeing if you can do a half day on Niagara-on-the-Lake with a private tour on the second (full) day after seeing the falls in the morning. Could be a fun excursion. Of the choices near Niagara Falls, that is usually what I recommend the most as it’s not as kitschy. Then, you have the rest of the last day for doing other activities around the falls and maybe visiting Buffalo.

Hope you all have a good time! I don’t have a specific guide in mind as I always went independently.

I know it’s been a few years since you wrote this, but what tour is that? The only ones I’m finding are pretty pricey. Hi! I will be in Buffalo this week. My husband and I are staying in downtown Buffalo, and want to spend a half day at Niagara Falls. From reading this guide, I am planning In is taking an Uber to Goat Island, then the Rainbow Bridge across to the Canadian side and catching that view. Is Uber pretty popular in the Buffalo/Niagara area? And when ordering the Uber, what should we choose as our NF “destination”? Any tips are much appreciated! This guide seem so helpful!

Yes, Uber is very popular. You can walk from Goat Island to the Rainbow Bridge pretty easily before walking across. I’d ask for Goat Island as your destination. The Uber might need to drop you off by the parking lot (not sure how close you can get to “Niagara Falls Parking Lot 2” with the uber, but worth a try), but that should get you close enough. Enjoy. 🙂

Now separated by the border between the USA and Canada, the largest of the three, the Horseshoe Falls, is situated on Canadian soil. The other two, the Bridal Veil and American Falls, are on American soil.

With the distinct geographical history and elements of the falls, you can choose to visit them from either country or, even better yet, plan a trip to include both. Visiting the American side of the falls and crossing into Canada if you’re a US national will require no visa.

When to Visit Niagara Falls

Deciding on the best time to visit the falls and their surrounding areas can make or break your trip. And, as with any other natural attraction, tourist influx during certain months also affects your experience.

A quick online search will tell you that the summer months in the region are ideal for any planned trip. For Niagara Falls, this means June, July, and August. The reasoning behind this is the result of higher day-to-day temperatures.

Although higher temperatures sound great, we are on the fence about this as the mists and breeze from the falls will make you doubt the actual temperatures most of the time.

What the summer months do, however, is cause a massive wave of tourists flogging the falls and the surrounding attractions, towns, and accommodation.

The falls are immensely popular, that’s for sure, but overcrowding everywhere you go can ruin a good vacation.

Winter is from November through to the end of February. Heavy snowfall occurs during December and can continue into January. The falls, in a sense, ‘slow’ down and might even freeze over in the extreme cold. Although this is also a beautiful sight to behold, many attractions at the falls shut down.

We recommend you plan your trip for the shoulder few months. These fall in Spring (March, April, and May) and Autumn (September and October). Temperatures are excellent, usually mid-to-high during the days and comfortable at night.

Prices are reasonable for accommodation, restaurants, entertainment venues, and attractions due to fewer tourists. 

How to Get to Niagara Falls

Traveling to Niagara Falls can be done in a variety of ways. Most visitors opt to fly to one of the airports near the falls. On the Canadian side, this is Toronto Pearson International Airport, which is about an hour’s drive from the falls. 

If you choose to fly on the American side, you’ll head for Buffalo Niagara International Airport, which is in Buffalo and about a 30-to-40-minute drive from the falls.

Niagara Falls also has its own train station with commuter and travel lines coming in from Toronto, New York, and several other cities. To make your trip more exciting we recommend spending at least one day in Toronto .

Once at the falls, it’s worth renting a car from the many car rental agencies around to make getting around as easy as possible and for added freedom.

But, with cab services in the area and short walking distances between most things (on either side of the falls), renting a car isn’t a necessity.

Whirlpools and waterfalls: 5 of the best experiences in Niagara Parks

Come for the falls, stay for the endless natural beauty, dramatic industrial architecture and colourful wildlife encounters.

Straddling the divide between the Canadian province of Ontario on the western bank of the Niagara River and the US state of New York to the east, Niagara Falls is a destination that needs little introduction. The thundering Horseshoe Falls — the largest of the three linked waterfalls — is undeniably the star attraction, with the waters of the Niagara River plummeting over a 188ft-high drop before exploding in clouds of billowing mist. It’s a scene that mesmerises millions of visitors every year, and while this immense natural phenomenon is indeed breathtaking, it’s by no means the only reason to visit the region. Explore further into Ontario’s Niagara Parks and you’ll find extensive natural beauty and a fascinating industrial history. Here are five of the best experiences not to miss on your next visit.

1. Journey behind the falls

Best for: the geographer Niagara Falls may have been pulling in eager-eyed tourists for years, but basking in their majesty the way you can today has not always been possible. Originally known as the ‘Sheet of Falling Water’, Journey Behind the Falls is an attraction at the western lip of Horseshoe Falls, documenting the geographical evolution of Niagara’s cascades, which have receded seven miles in 12,500 years. It also tells the history of Niagara Falls as an area, from its first Indigenous inhabitants to its position as a world-famous tourist attraction. In addition to getting the best spray-soaked views, visitors can follow the site’s progress first-hand — from the rickety wooden staircases built in the early 1800s and the first tunnels cut into the rock in the early 1900s, all the way through to today’s extensive viewing platforms, walkways, exhibitions and immersive experiences.

2. Take a white water walk

Best for: the outdoor enthusiast   Finding peace and quiet alongside racing rapids might seem impossible, but down on the banks of the Niagara River there’s a roar that blocks out all else. The power of nature becomes almost meditative when taking a turn along White Water Walk , a quarter-mile stretch of boardwalk at the edge of the frothing white-and-turquoise waters. From River Road, a lift descends 230ft to this riverside walkway, which juts out regularly into platforms to allow optimal viewing of the mighty rapids and the 410-million-year-old rock layers they traverse. Information plaques educate visitors on the geology of the gorge — from its 11,000-year-old Ice Age formation to its dolomite and shale-based rock bed — and give detail on the flora and fauna found in the surrounding park.

3. Witness a whirlpool from above  

Best for: the thrill-seeker The power of the Niagara River can be felt far from the cascading tumult of Horseshoe Falls. Over three miles north, visitors will find Niagara Glen, a 125ft-deep pocket that was carved out of the river’s ancient banks around 5,000 years ago. Here, a surging whirlpool of water rages, created by an abrupt anticlockwise turn at the rapids’ end that results in a constant maelstrom of conflicting currents. For the best view, take the Whirlpool Aero Car , an antique but recently refurbished cable car that has been transporting visitors across the gorge for over a century. With capacity for up to 35 people, it soars 200ft above the Class 6 rapids for just over half a mile on a round trip, crossing the sharply angled border with the US four times in mid-air (no, you won’t need your passport). It’s a popular attraction, so consider visiting first thing in the morning to avoid queues.

4. Discover the world's butterflies

Best for: the nature lover Just a ten-minute drive from the Whirlpool Aero Car you’ll find the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory — one of North America’s largest butterfly conservatories. Its lush interior invites visitors to walk 600ft of pathways lined with tropical plants, with more than 2,000 butterflies fluttering under the glass roof. A self-guided tour lets visitors observe butterfly species from all over the world, such as the blue morpho, Low’s swallowtail, red lacewing and small postman, as they flit between trickling waterfalls and towering foliage. See them up close at strategically placed feeding stations, or if you’re lucky, witness newborns take their first flight after emerging from their pupa. Broaden your butterfly knowledge with interactive displays and video presentations, which show short films on the creatures’ life cycle.

5. Take to the tunnels

Best for: the historian   Feeling adventurous? Leave the surface behind and board a glass-walled lift to descend into the depths of the Niagara Parks Power Station , a former hydropower plant, built in 1905. As well as wandering the building’s soaring turbine halls where exhibits, artefacts and installations recall its history, guests can walk through the curved confines of its enormous spent-water outlet tunnel. The 2,200ft-long arched corridor transfers visitors from the depths of the plant to a dramatic exit point over the Niagara River, where a new viewing platform reveals the remarkable vistas of Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and the lower Niagara River. Created using only pickaxes, shovels and rudimentary dynamite, this passageway is just one part of an impressive architectural feature, all of which can be accessed for no extra fee (tunnel entry is included with regular admission to the power station site).

New attractions open every year, so whether it’s your first time visiting Niagara Falls or your 20th, you will always have a great time at this sensational natural wonder of the world.

Many people only make a quick day trip to Niagara from Toronto , and while you can see a lot in one day , it is worth spending two or three days exploring the Honeymoon Capital of the World.

1. Whirlpool Jetboat

Located just a short 10-minute drive up the Niagara Parkway from the city center of Niagara Falls, Canada, the Whirlpool Jetboat Tour is hands down the best thing to do in Niagara Falls for outdoor and adventure lovers. Book your JetBoat Tour in advance here.

Choose which jet boat tour you want—open or closed, wet or dry. We’ve done both and while the wet is a total thrill, and I prefer the dry ride, as you really get to take in the beauty of the Niagara Gorge, passing through the oldest state park in the USA and the beautiful Niagara Glen area on the Canadian Site. The trip takes you along the Niagara River to the Class 6 rapids of the whirlpool.

2. Helicopter Tour

3. Hornblower

Called the Maid of the Mist in the USA, The Hor nblower is the best experience on both sides of the border. The Hornblower has been operating since 1846, shuttling people across to the United States. In 1885, they started taking passengers to an up-close and personal view of the Horseshoe Falls.

It is a thrilling experience to be so close to the falling water. The boat goes right inside the Horseshoe Falls as thundering water surrounds you. You will get very wet as you go directly into the mist of Horseshoe Falls, but rain ponchos are provided and this is an experience you must not miss. 4. WildPlay Zipline to the Falls

If you want to have one of the most epic ziplining experiences, hop on the WildPlay Zipline to the Falls. This thrilling ride takes you high above the Niagara Gorge, offering a bird’s-eye view of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, The American, and Bridal Veil Falls.

5. Niagara Power Station

The Niagara Falls Power Station has quickly become a fan favorite of the best things to do in Niagara Falls. Take a glass elevator down 54 meters (180 feet) to explore the first major Canadian power plant on the Niagara River. You’ll walk the 670-meter (2,200-feet) long tunnel that leads to an observation deck at the Niagara River.

The interactive museum showcases the rich history of the Niagara Falls area. You’ll see how pioneers harnessed the power of Horseshoe Falls. At night, there is a sound and light show that features an interactive light display set to music.

The tunnel is an amazing walkthrough of history and a feat of engineering, and it comes out on a fantastic observation deck with views of Canada’s Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls.

6. Journey Behind the Falls

The Hornblower may be the Fall’s most famous attraction, but we love the Journey Behind the Falls even more! When visiting Niagara Falls, make sure to add this to your bucket list.

Located at the Table Rock Welcome Center, You descend 125 feet from above the falls to the heart of the cascade. You then get to explore 130-year-old tunnels that weave behind the waterfalls. Feel the power of the Niagara River and hear the thunder of the water crashing.

After you explore behind the scenes of the Canadian horseshoe falls, you come out to an observation deck right beside the falls, where you’ll get to see them firsthand from the outdoor viewing platform. It’s another attraction in Niagara Falls that’s sure to get your clothes very wet, but don’t worry, rain ponchos are provided.

7. Niagara SkyWheel

The Niagara SkyWheel can be seen throughout the city, and when visiting Niagara Falls, you really must go for a ride. This 175-foot-tall Ferris wheel offers fabulous views of the falls and the surrounding area. Each enclosed gondola can hold up to six passengers, and they are climate-controlled. There is a running commentary during the revolutions, and you have plenty of time to take photos and enjoy the scenery.

Get there early in the morning to avoid the crowds. We went on a weekday and were first up, so we had the gondola all to ourselves. The Niagara SkyWheel is included in your Clifton Hill Fun Pass

8. Skylon Tower

Skylon Tower isn’t just a dining establishment; it is also an observation deck and one of the top Niagara Falls attractions. The Skyon Tower is Niagara’s answer to Toronto’s CN Tower, and it really does offer the best views of Niagara Falls, Canada, and the American Falls. A 52-second ride takes you to the top of the Skylon Tower for views of the Falls, the Niagara Gorge, and the surrounding area,, including Buffalo, New York, across the river. There is an observation deck and a 4D movie theater. Of course, while you are there, you can have dinner at the revolving restaurant.

9. Whirlpool Aerocar

Now, moving a little out of the city is the Whirlpool Aerocar. If you have visited Niagara Falls a few times, this is a great attraction to add to the list. What we don’t love about this is that lines can get long since it can only do one trip at a time.

Located along the WeGo route, the Whirlpool Aerocar is a part of some Niagara Packages. It is quite a thrill taking you out to the middle of the Niagara Gorge to see the massive whirlpool in the middle of the Niagara River.

10. Illumination of the Falls & Fireworks

Fireworks happen nightly in the summer months, and they are one of the best things to do in Niagara Falls for free! When dusk sets in, the falls are illuminated, and during the summer months, there is a fantastic fireworks display.

Be sure to get your place early; it fills up, and you need to scout your spot and stick to it. You can also choose one of the many restaurants that overlook the falls and eat a late dinner for a spectacular view.

Fireworks happen at different times throughout the year. The Winter Festival of Lights spans over 40 Nights during the Festival from November to Feb. and nightly in the summertime. The falls are illuminated each night, so even if fireworks aren’t going on, you will still have a light show every night of the year.

11. Dine with a View of The Falls

Since I mentioned watching fireworks from one of the restaurants overlooking the falls, I thought I should let you know what restaurants in Niagara Falls overlook the falls. 12. Wonders of Magic Show

If casinos aren’t your thing, take in a Magic Show at Niagara Falls. The Vegas-style show is a wild magic illusion show featuring Greg Frewin at the Greg Frewin Theatre.

This is the longest-running show in Niagara, with 1 Million Guests enjoying the World Champion of Magic and Canada’s Top Illusionist performance. We saw this years ago and plan on going back to enjoy a buffet dinner followed by a magic show. It showcases illusions, classic magic, and a fun story for families and adults. 13. White Water Walk

The White Water Walk is an incredible opportunity to get up close to the Class 6 rapids of the Niagara River. Included in your adventure pass, an elevator takes you 70 meters (229 feet) down to the Niagara Gorge to a wooden platform built right beside the largest series of standing waves in North America

The Whitewater Walk is open from mid-April to mid-November and can be accessed from the Niagara Parkway or the WeGo People mover, which is included in your adventure pass. It is an easy and accessible outdoor adventure.

14. Niagara Glen

Residents won’t be too thrilled with me sharing the Niagara Glen area of Niagara Falls. There are a host of trails covering an area of 42 acres with old-growth trees, massive boulders, and beautiful scenery. If you are looking for an outdoor adventure, you can go hiking anytime between sunrise and sunset. Admission to Niagara Glen Nature Reserve is free.

15. Nightmares Fear Factory

Want to get your blood pumping again? This is one scary haunted house. Located at the top of Clifton Hill across from Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Nightmares is a must for anyone who loves a good scare.

It is scary, alright; legend has it that it was built on the site of an old coffin factory. The proprietor was killed in a prank gone bad and has haunted the halls ever since. If you become too scared inside the maze of nightmares, you can chicken out. Don’t feel bad if you do, over 100,000 people have chickened out over the years. We went in thinking we’d be fine, but let me tell you, I held on to Dave for dear life!

16. Clifton Hill Fun Pass

A visit to Niagara Falls would not be complete without visiting Clifton Hill, the Street of Fun on the Falls. Kids and adults alike will love Dracula’s Castle, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Wax Museums, Midways, and haunted houses. Read all about Clifton Hill here.

This area also has Casino Niagara and the Fallsview Indoor Water Park, making it a great destination for all ages. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes, and attractions along Clifton Hill, and it is worth walking up from the Oakes Garden Theater, which has great views of the falls.

A great option is to buy the Clifton Hill Fun Pass , which gives you access to six Niagara Falls attractions. It gives you access to many of the attractions in the Midway and on Clifton Hill, like the Niagara SkyWheel, Movieland Wax Museum, and the 6D Interactive adventure rides Cosmic Coaster and Zombie Attack! Clifton Hill is also a great place to go when looking for things to do in Niagara Falls at night.

Some other not-to-miss attractions on Clifton Hill include Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Great Canadian Midway, Niagara Speedway, Hershey’s Chocolate World, Rainforest Cafe, Niagara Falls History Museum, and the Fun Zone. This area is fun for the whole family.

17. Butterfly Conservatory

Enter the climate-controlled rainforest and be surrounded by thousands of butterflies flying through the air as you walk along the path. As you enter, the humidity hits your face, making you feel as if you’ve entered a rainforest. Created to mimic the natural habitat of butterflies, this beautiful environment has waterfalls, pools, and lush vegetation.

There is also an educational element, as you learn about the life cycle of butterflies and can study their behavior. The Butterfly Conservator is included in Niagara Pass, and it really is a must-visit destination. The conservatory is wheelchair accessible and suitable for visitors of all ages.

18. Fallsview Casino Resort

Fallsview Casino Resort has become a huge draw to Niagara Falls. There are two casinos in Niagara: Casino Niagara near Clifton Hill and the more extravagant Fallsview Casino entertainment complex.

We’re not big on gambling, but the Fallsview Casino Resort is an excellent place to visit. Besides the casino, it has a world-class music venue that draws some of the top artists in the business. Billy Joel played Fallsview just last week! Fallsviews isn’t just a casino; it’s a resort complete with international music acts and 5-star dining. There’s shopping, five different restaurants, and two nightclubs.

19. Niagara’s Fury

While you are at Journey Behind the Falls, pop in to see the 4D movie that is included with your Adventure Pass. Niagara Fury is a lot of fun for the whole family, especially the kids. This immersive 360-degree cinema recreates the history of the falls complete with wind, mist, and vibrations make you feel as if you are right beside the mighty waterfall.

Ponchos are handed out beforehand and if you want to get wet, stand at the very front. It is located at the Table Rock Welcome Center, and you can grab a bite to eat here.

20. Botanical Gardens

Dave and I have visited Niagara Falls countless times and it wasn’t until two years ago that we finally stopped at the Botanical Gardens. It’s a quiet retreat and it is the perfect spot to capture some Instagram photographs.

It’s funny that we’d never walked through the gardens because the Butterfly Conservatory is located in the same spot. But in the past, we skipped the gardens and went straight to the butterflies. But it is worth walking through the Botanical Gardens as it is beautiful and is a quiet retreat from the chaos of the other attractions. The Butterfly Conservatory is included in the Niagara Adventure Pass. 

21. Floral Clock

I never cared for the Floral Clock as a kid, but each time we return to Niagara, we always take a quick trip to the clock. It is a must-see attraction when you visit Niagara Falls simply because it’s been around for so long. The WEGO bus stops here, so you don’t even need to make a special trip.

It is powered by Ontario Hydro, which is fitting since these mighty waterfalls power much of the Eastern Seaboard. It is also the largest floral clock in the world.

22. Niagara on the Lake

The only reason Niagara on the Lake is located so far down is because it is a bit off the beaten path and is its own destination in its own right. Located on Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Niagara River, this is one of the top tourist destinations in Ontario.

The Shaw Festival attracts theatre lovers, and if you love browsing shops and local artisans at work, this is the place for you. If you are feeling romantic, take a horse-drawn carriage ride around the historic sites of Niagara on the Lake. 23. Tour the Niagara Wine Route

After all that excitement from the more adventurous attractions, hop on the Niagara wine route in the glorious Niagara wine region. Only 15 minutes from downtown Niagara there are award-winning wineries spanning from the Niagara Escarpment and along Lake Ontario just waiting to be explored.

If you decide to stay in Niagara on the Lake, you can rent a bicycle and go on your own or join a bicycle tour. There are limo tours, funky bus tours, horse tours, and more to drink wine without having to drive. Popular Niagara Wineries include Peller Estates, Trius, Inniskillin, Two Sisters, Wayne Gretzky, and Vineland Estates.

24. Fort George National Historic Site

The Fort George National Historic Site is located just outside of Niagara on the Lake. During the War of 1812, it was a strategic fort protecting the then-British Colony from the United States. Visit the fort to see re-enactments of The Red Coats firing their muskets and experience life two centuries ago.

It is a must-visit for history buffs to see this outpost, which was the site of the Battle of Fort George in 1813. There are several exhibits with actors dressed in historic clothing putting on musket demonstrations, military reenactments, and learning about what life was like during the War of 1812.

25. Water Parks

Niagara Falls has two water parks. The Skylon Hotel & Waterpark is located at Clifton Hill, but if you really want to spend some time at a Water Park, Great Wolf Lodge in our choice. I’ll never forget spending a few days while working at YTV and having a blast in its 100,000-square-foot indoor water park, complete with wave pools, water slides, and a lazy river. Staying at the hotel is a fun getaway for the family. While we wouldn’t do this anymore, I know that our neighbors love booking a stay at Great Wolf Lodge with the kids.

Our favorite place is Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel and Spa . We just stayed there last week and had a magnificent room with a view of Horseshoe Falls, and enjoyed its Scandinavian style Spa experience. Marriott on the Falls across the street is great too with views of Horseshoe Falls.

If you want to stay close to Clifton Hill, we like the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel it has great views of the Niagara River American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls.

Getting Around Niagara Falls

When you visit Niagara Falls , traveling by car is ideal, but if you are visiting from out of the country or taking a side trip from Toronto , you don’t need a car. If you buy an attraction pass, it gives you access to the WEGO Bus that visits the major attractions.

Bicycle rentals are available and are an excellent way to see the area. Dave and I once rode bikes all the way to Niagara on the Lake from downtown Niagara to tour some wineries. You can also book tours out to Niagara from Toronto.

There are plenty of parking lots around Niagara Falls, and hotels have parking, including valet.

Getting to Niagara Falls

Buses operate from downtown Toronto and Buffalo, New York . We normally drive to Niagara Falls since we live an hour away, but we have taken the bus from Toronto by booking through Busbud, and it was quick and easy. The only downfall is that it is about a 30-minute walk from the bus terminal to the attractions.

Trains travel from New York City to Toronto and Cleveland. Once you get to Niagara Falls, it is easy to get around, as most attractions are within walking distance. Alternatively, you can hop on the WeGo People mover to get to the attractions outside the city center.

You can drive to Niagara Falls from the United States by crossing the Rainbow Bridge. Pedestrians can also walk across Rainbow Bridge to visit either side of the border. Read: How to Get From Toronto to Niagara Falls – Bus, Train, Transit, And Car

Tours can easily be booked to Niagara on the Lake and on the Wine Trail, where they will pick you up from your hotel.

Nothing beats those views at sunset from a jacuzzi tub in a suite! We always remind folks that Niagara Falls needs to be experience in each season, especially Fall.

There is a stereotype that Niagara Falls should be viewed from Canada. This is not true! Of course, it’s great when you have a visa in the US and Canada, and you can get the most complete impression from the waterfalls. But if there is no Canadian visa, this does not mean that there is no point in going to Niagara! From the Canadian side, it is really better to see all the waterfalls, because two of them are on the side of the US, and the third is partly in the US and partly in Canada. Accordingly, from Canada (that is, when you are in front of waterfalls), you can see them better than when you stand near them. But! On the American side, a huge number of observation platforms that allow you to see the waterfall well enough, there is an opportunity to go down to the foot of the waterfall – Cave of the winds for only $ 10 and, of course, the opportunity to make an incredibly exciting and unusual trip on the boat Maid of the Mist and look at all three waterfalls from the water!

I’ve seen Niagara falls thrice and it is still a truly marvelous experience for me. I highly recommend the place if you’re first time to travel to Canada!

We are going to Niagara Falls for a weekend in January, Off season, I know. Going with a nine and ten year old, any suggestions? I am real sad the Greg Frewin magic show isn’t happening.

Other than what is on this list?:-) For the winter season, hit the wax museums, Ripleys and all that fun stuff, but head out to the Niagara on the Lake region too. Maybe there is some maple syrup farms or snowshoeing or even some sleigh rides. The countryside in that area is post card perfect.

You know that adventure pass seems far more desirable than the one with the simulator ride, and the haunted house. Perhaps I’ll have to make my way back to the Falls.

Check Out The Buffalo Zoo
