15 Offbeat Himachal Destinations No One Told You About

I don’t really like making listicles. It is one thing that has single-handedly destroyed the substance and depth of online content. However, I think the time has come to make this one. In recent times, I have noticed that the word “offbeat” is used very frivolously. There are “offbeat” lists on Himachal that include places that have been in the tourist radar since the age of Roerich and Chetwode. I understand that familiarity is also relative but still… no… Kasol, Malana, and Chitkul are NOT offbeat!

So, I wanted to make a genuine top 10 unexplored list but too many names came up! That too after completely excluding the entire Parvati Valley, Spiti Valley, and anything in the 50 KM radius of Manali, Dharamshala and Shimla. It is possible that you can still find something interesting and obscure around these places but you will never be too far from a crowded tourist hub. For that reason, I have decided not to mention Lower Kinnaur (Kalpa-Peo-Sangla-Chitkul) and Spiti. They still remain a great destinations but you know that already, don’t you?

The primary criteria I am using here is the lack tourists on ground and lack of chatter on the social media as per my observation. Some of these names will be a bit more familiar than the others but overall, they can offer you that much needed dose of desolation to genuine misanthropes. Most of these areas don’t have expensive resorts but HRTC buses connect them all.

So, what I am doing is that I am listing out entire regions or circuits and not just solitary towns or villages (otherwise there will be too many names). You can easily spend a week exploring any of these regions and you can find secluded valleys, villages, cultures and treks in these regions. Some of these should also be ideal for quick weekend road trips from Delhi.

Top 14 Unexplored Tourist Circuits in Himachal Pradesh

1. sach pass and pangi valley.

Hudan Valley 34

Enough can’t be said about Pangi, but I have already said whatever I had to say about it in numerous posts about the Sach Pass, Killar, Hudan, and Sural. It is practically the last frontier yet to be broken by the Himachal tourism boom. In the olden days, it used to be a site for Kala Pani (exile) for criminals of Chamba Kingdom. Biker gangs and SUV enthusiasts travel there mainly to prove their mettle on what they call one of the “most dangerous roads” on earth. However, I think this is only one of Pangi’s charms. The real joy of Pangi lies in its frontier villages, and the inclined slopes that lead to them. I will soon make a detailed guide on the valley.

How to Reach Pangi: Bus or shared cars from Keylong (130 Kms) or Chamba town (160 Kms) to Killar. Both routes will take the whole day. From Killar you get local buses to the villages and you can also opt for a long walk/hike like I did on many occasions.

Stay in Pangi Valley: There are two hotels and one homestay in Killar. Inner villages have no private accommodations but there are a couple of Government rest houses in Hudan and Sural that need to be pre-booked from Chamba.

2. Bahu-Gadagushaini-Chhatri

Gadagushaini 35

Firstly don’t confuse Gada Gushaini with Gushaini in Tirthan. These are two different places. I hadn’t considered this route even till the beginning of this summer. But once I left Jibhi end entered that stretch, it took me by surprise. It is a part of Mandi district, and not far from very popular Jibhi-Jalori stretch. Yet, the roads were as dangerous as Pangi and finding ATMs and homestays was a challenge. But this is what keeps this region pristine and you can have a view of the culture of the seraj region in its rawest form in various ancient temples in this region. Eventually you can go out of this region through Janjehli, which is described in the next section.

How to Reach Gada Gushaini and Chhatri: You can get buses from Jibhi or Banjar. Number of buses will not be very high so be careful and aks locals about the timings. Jibhi to Gadagushaini is around 10-11 KMs. Chattri is another 15 odd KMs from Gada Gushaini. Interestingly, it is of the last remaining areas that have still not been properly mapped by Google . So, if you check Google maps, you will get nothing but confusion. All you can do is to trust me and then trust those HRTC drivers.

Where to Stay in Gada Gushaini : Gadagushani has a new budget homestay where I stayed, Bahu has a more luxury homestay as per my knowledge. There may be a couple of options in Chhatri and in fact the temple pries invited us to stay, so you are in safe hands.

3. Janjehli-Karsog-Chindi-Rohanda-Kamru Nag

Karsog Valley 001

Janjehli and Karsog are no far from aforementioned places but these two have better connectivity and faiclities. Especially Janjehli is a more popular tourist spot with a lot of homestays. You can trek to the Shikari Devi temple from both these towns or you can start from one, do the trek, and move on to the other town. This area is very fertile and scenic. Apple orchards are common too and so are various ancient stone temples. Choose the summer or post-monsoon to trek for Shikari Devi as raisn make it difficult. However, Karsog in Monsoon is a heavenly sight. The trek to Kamru Nag is also in the same region but directions may be confusing. It is another nice day trek to an ancient temple and lake.

How to Reach Janjehli or Karsog: You get buses to both places from Mandi (around 90-100 KMs). Karsog is also directly connected to Shimla (110 Kms). For Kamru Nag get a bus to Rohanda from Mandi.

Where to Stay in Janjehli or Karsog: Janjehli is full of nice homestays in INR 300-500 range, that too set amidst apple orchards. At Karsog, back in 2013, there were a couple of not very sophisticated hotels. But newer things must have come up now. For Kamru Nag, you can get a basic room at Rohanda.

4. Bharmour-Kugti Region

Bharmour

Bharmour, which is a very small town with a disproportionate number of homestays, was the ancient capital of Chamba Kingdom. It is around 60 KMs from Chamba town and the starting point for the epic pilgrimage called Manimahesh Kailash Yatra and even more epic Kugti Pass Trek to Lahaul. Even if you don’t do the big treks, you can find enough local trails and detours around the region to keep yourself occupied. Unfortunately I reached Bharmour at the fag end of a very long summer and only managed to pay a visit to the Chaurasi Temple. I had lost the energy to explore much and I will have to return soon.

How to Reach Bharmour : Bus from Chamba- 60 Kms- 3 Hours (Difficult roads with occasional roadblocks)

Budget Hotels in Bharmour : There are many hotels and homestays in Bharmour in the 500-700 Range. Some of them even offer free Wi-Fi. There should be a FRH in Kugti Village too.

Here is a good post by Travelshoebum on Bharmour-Hadsar-Kugti stretch, that too in the winter.

5. Pabbar Valley-Rohru-Chanshal Pass-Dodra-Kwar

Hatkoti 2

You can go much beyond the obvious hotspots like Narkanda that you have heard of. Rohru is a pretty big town located on the banks of Pabbar River. However, I found it to be too crowded for such a remote location and also it was one of the least touristy places I had ever seen in Himachal. Hatkoti is a smaller place near Rohru with an ancient temple but the main attraction is the Chanshal Pass (3750 metres). If you cross the pass, you reach Dodra, and then Kwar, two of the remotest villages in the state. You get buses from Rohru although I could not undertake this epic trip this time due to various reasons. But I will do it soon.

Dodra Kwar 9

How to Reach Rohru: Bus from Shimla ISBT (110 Kms but takes ages due to bad roads).  It is also connected to Uttarakhand through the Har ki Doon side. You can get buses going towards that side too and I undertook this journey to Hanol along the Tons river and then walked 15 Kms to Mori for no particular reason.

Stay in Rohru: It is a big town with many hotels catering to various budgets including a HPTDC one. There is a guesthouse in Kwar village.

6. Sainj Valley

Shangarh Shungchul Mahadev 13

One of the shortest yet best detours this year for me has been the one to Shangarh Village. And there is much more to do in Sainj. The reason why I am including this is because Sainj somehow gets overshadowed by its cousin Tirthan Valley, which is more touristy and more expensive. Sainj and Tirthan are the primary constituents of the Great Himalayan National Park, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sensuous meadows, tower temples, rarely visited treks, local cultures, everything can be experienced if you are willing to take that leap of faith.

How to reach Sainj : Buses run from Aut Tunnel to Sainj and Neuli. Beyond that you may have to look for local cars or hike.

Where to stay in Sainj : There are good homestays in Shangarh.

7. Miyar Valley

Miyar Valley Trek 51

Miyar offers you the best of both Himachal and Ladakh. It is a high altitude valley sandwiched between Zanskar and Pir Panjal ranges. The sheer bus ride through the fecund Pattan Valley and then the surreal Miyar Valley to Shukto, the last roadhead, is an exhilarating affair and the trek beyond it is the stuff that misanthropic dreams are made of.

How to reach Miyar : You get direct buses from Keylong in the morning that passes through Trilokinath and Udaipur.

Where to stay in Miyar : The homestay is located just at the point where the bus stops and turns back.

Miyar Valley Trek

8. Rest of Lahaul

DSC 0992

Lahaul is not unknown, but it is surely underrated. People halt at Keylong to go to Ladakh. But Keylong deserves attention too. The ancient monasteries around Keylong deserve a lot of time apart from the sheer landscapes of the Bhaga Valley. There are other landmarks in places like Tandi (Guru Ghantal Gompa), Sissu, and Gondhla. The other important attraction remaining in Lahaul is the Neelkanth Mahadev, a high altitude lake that requires several days of trekking to reach.

How to reach Lahaul : Just take a morning bus from Kullu or Manali to Keylong.

Where to stay in Lahaul : Keylong if full of budget hotels. Many of them even offer free Wi-Fi.

9. Upper Kinnaur

Nako 32

Now, Kinnaur is very popular and so is Spiti. But the small stretch in Upper Kinnaur, where the roads are the roughest and the lands are at their driest, remains barely explored. At this point, you leave behind the lush green areas and enter the rain-shadow zone that continues to Spiti and then Ladakh. I am talking about places like Lippa, Asrang, Charang, Chango and many more. Eventually this stretch leads to Nako, which is again pretty famous. But in between, many of these unknown villages have their hidden temples, monasteries, and even wildlife sanctuaries. You can of course undertake the epic Kinnaur-Kailash-Parikrama to cover some of these villages. This is one area I have earmarked for the next year.

How to reach Upper Kinnaur: You will get buses from Reckong Peo bus stand to many of these inner villages, beyond that you will have to trek.

Where to stay in Upper Kinnaur: While Nako is a touristy place full of homestays, other villages are not known to have much tourism infrastructure. So, you will have to be dependent on the goodness of the locals, but they are known to be good people.

Hard to find detailed information on the places I am talking about.

Here is my Nako Guide

And here is a good post on Kinnaur Kailash Parikrama by Color Odyssey.

10. Churah Region

8716058687 a06dcb997e o

Churah region is another enigmatic region that remains minimally touched. It is the area after Chamba but before reaching Sach Pass. It has places like Tissa (Bhanjraru), Bairagarh, Devi Kothi etc.  I have crossed, and even stayed in Bairagarh many times en route to, or returning from Pangi via Sach Pass. But the real charm of Churah is in its high altitude glacial lakes such as Ghadasaru Mahadev and Mahakali lakes beyond these small villages. This takes a bit of trekking as well as clear weather to reach any of these.

Devikothi 3

How to reach Churah : You will easily get buses from Chamba to most of these places.

Where to stay in Churah : You should find basic homestays in Tissa (Bhanjraroo) and Bairagarh. I am not sure about other places.

11. Beyond Barot: Chota Bhangal & Bara Bhangal

26807628723 e2b7020f4a o

Barot itself is not offbeat. It has grown quite popular of late and even backing 2016 it was packed with homestays. But what I am interested in is the area beyond Barot. This is the chota Bhangal region, followed by the mythical bara Bhangal. Bara Bhangal is one of toughest treks in I discovered that takes you to one of the remotest villages in India. Very few people even try it. Nevertheless, there are many other village homes and other Trek routes in the chota Bhangal region beyond Barot.

How to reach Churah : You will easily get buses from Mandi or Jogindernagar to Barot, Lohardi, or Baragran. After that only option is to trek.

Where to stay in Churah : Barot has many options, so has Lohardi and some nearby villages.

12. Kotkhai: The Apple Country

Apple Belt Ripe September Apples

Narkanda is famous in this region due to its proximity ot Shimla. However, to experience the apple country completely, you should go deeper to Kotkhai. The Kotkhai-Kotgarh apple belt has many secluded villages and valleys, all covered with apple orchards that turn red post-monsoon. The history of this region is also fascinating, as you can see from the epic Kotkhai Fort.

How to reach Churah : Any Shimla to Rohru bus will pass through Kotkhai.

Where to stay in Churah : Kotkhai has a few interesting homestays which are generally set amidst apple orchards as expected.

This is an interesting post about Kotkhai Fort that should give you some idea about the history, culture, and visual allure of the region.

13. Sirmaur District

Sirmaur 17

Sirmaur is one district that eluded me for a long time. Finally, earlier this year, managed a not too satisfactory round through this district. I spent nights in Nahan and Haripurdhar. I also passed through Renukaji and I had passed through Paonta Sahib anyway because it is closer to Dehradun. I realized that this area has a long way to go before it catches up to rest of the state in terms of tourism. Nevertheless, this is what makes it offbeat. The most famous activity here is the Churdhar Trek, which can also be approached from Solan. I personally felt that Haripurdhar has a lot of potential in terms of views.

How to reach Sirmaur: You will get buses to Nahan from Shimla, Solan, or Dehradun. Other places are connected with Nahan. Nohradhar (base for Churdhar Trek) is also connected with Solan.

Where to stay in Sirmaur: Most major places like Nahan, Haripurdhar, Nohradhar, and Renukaji have hotels. But I struggled to find tourist-friendly budget homestays that thrive in other districts of HP.

Haripurdhar and Nahan

14. Rupi-Bhaba Region, Kinnaur

Himachal regulars must have heard of Pin Bhaba Trek. You must have crossed places like Chaura, Bhabanagar, Wangtu, etc while going to Kinnaur and Spiti. But I am sure very few have taken the detour from Wangtu to Kafnu. These densely forested areas are a part of Rupi Bhaba sanctuary. From Kafnu you can go for the aforementioned Pin Bhaba Trek to reach Pin Valley in Spiti. Apart from this somewhat popular trek, there are many trails inside that have rarely been explored by anyone. You can also trek from Chaura through the Rupi Bhaba Sanctuary. I have been eyeing this region for a long time but even I have failed to do justice to this area and can’t even produce a photograph as of now. I hope I can sort this out soon.

How to reach Kafnu: There should be at least one direct bus from Shimla to Kafnu. Otherwise, get into any Peo-bround bus from Shimla/Rampur to Wangtu.

Where to stay in Kafnu: There are some basic options in Kafnu. There are also some Forest Rest Houses (FRH) at various locations within the sanctuary such as Rupi and Salaring.

After a lot of effort, I found one post with details for the Rupi-Bhaba trek from Chaura .

15. Thachi Valley

Thachi 10

Thachi Valley is the best kept secret of Himachal. It has very few options to stay and even fewer people visit it. But make no mistake, this is the best detour you can consider in Himachal. Thachi Valley is best approached from Aut-Bali Chowki route. There are scores of treks, trails, waterfalls, and ancient temples in this area. If you visit in August-September like I did, you will really enjoy the apple season.

How to reach Thachi Valley: Direct buses are available from Aut, on the Delhi-Manali road.

Where to stay in Thachi: Stay options are limited. There is one hotel at Thachi Village and a couple of other homestays at various nearby villages.

Thachi Valley Travelogue

So, this is it for now. I planned to list only 10 to start with but now it has become 14. There were others in my mind that I did not include due to lack of available details. I intend to explore them sooner or later. So, this list will keep growing.

Superb. Listicle it is not, by any angle.

' src=

Brilliant post man. I am from Himachal and have been to most of the places but your post made me realize that I am yet to plan some of these places well. I visited some of the these places during childhood for family get-togethers, so didn’t look at those places from travel perspective. Good job in compiling this list and I am sharing it on my Himachal page.

' src=

Thanks Jitaditya for a great listicle. Its been always pleasure to read you. Thanks for sharing and keep sharing.

Hi VJ, Can you please share link to your Himachal Page ?

' src=

This is brilliant sharing my friend. Happy that we have covered 5-6 places already and will check the others soon.

' src=

Brilliant post. So many places to visit and I wish they remain hidden.

' src=

its amazing so beautiful thanks for sharing

' src=

Wonderful list!

' src=

Awesome pictures and brilliantly penned. I feel like planning NOW!

' src=

I have very scanty knowledge of that region and hence found this very useful. Thank you 🙂

' src=

Wow! This area is a hiker’s paradise, Jitaditya! Which one of these places is the best place for hiking?

' src=

Hey Agnes… almost all of these places are good for hiking… for some serious trekking options, try the GHNP region (No. 6 in the list)

Truly unexplored places in Himachsl

' src=

An ansolutely stunning post. I wish I could explore all these places. Thank you for sharing this.

' src=

There seems to be a consensus of brilliant in the comments and I agree fully. I am torn on listicals. As a medium that promotes structure over content, they turn my stomach. In this post, you have a solid presentation but also a great pacing of relevant facts and observations. Bravo. I would love to explore the Himalayas, but wouldn’t want to get caught up in the normal Instagram churn. The Sainj Valley seems like a great way to have this kind of trip.

' src=

This is such a phenomenal post. First of all I have never heard of Himachal Pradesh and now I would love to visit. The Churah Region caught my interest because of the mountains. Your description and picture just makes it a great place to explore and be adventurous.

' src=

I personally don’t have an issue with listicles, as long as they are done well and informative. And your listicle is quite good! I haven’t heard of any of these places, which makes the list particularly refreshing. The landscape in these areas is so beautiful, and are great alternatives for people like me who like to explore regions that fly under the normal tourist radar.

' src=

I so agree with you about listicles. I also agree that this list about the off-beat places in Himachal Pradesh was worth writing and worth reading. The Miyar valley and the Churah region will top my list. I can’t wait to explore India!

' src=

I love unexplored places! Though I do agree that the word offbeat has becom somewhat of a buzzword recently. People seem to use it because they think it will improve their tourism, so I appreciate a litst of genuinely unexplored places.

Sach Pass and Pangi Valley sound beautiful, and adventurous with those roads! And the Miyar Valley is another which would be on my list. The trek to Shukto sounds like it’s a must, and I love that you can organize a homestay for a truly authentic experience.

Thanks for putting together this list!

' src=

This is one listicle that was probably long awaited. I only hope that these genuinely off beat places remain that way and people do not make a beeline to them rendering them otherwise 🙂 All of these places are charming and their exclusivity is what adds more allure to their charm. I am particularly fascinated by Gada Gushaini and Chhatri as you mention that even Google has not reached there.

' src=

I never heard of these places before but I have not explored much of India (yet) . . The Himalayas are still a pending subject for me. Hopefully I will go to Ladakh soon and I would not mind adding a couple of your suggestions on the way to it. I especially loved Sainj Valley picture /description . .

' src=

I can’t get over how beautiful all of your photos are! I don’t mind listicles. But yours have a bit more info and it’s not like any that I’ve read before, so thank you for contributing this! 🙂 I haven’t heard of most of these places and I’d like to visit all of them!

' src=

These are actually offbeat tourist places of Himachal and we are going to love them. You have compiled them so well with all the required info. The chamba district is on our list for the next Himachal trip. We have just been till Karsog but nowhere beyond it. The places beyond it looks really great and Sainj Valley has won my heart.

' src=

this one is best listicle, I have never heard about all those places and would love to visit them .More of himachal to be explore yet

' src=

Awesome post… looking forward to travel soon… will try to cover all these places

' src=

Hey..can I go to these places with my family? Is the accomodation facility really good there?

' src=

These are really so much amazing places and I have never heard about such beautiful places before. Can you please suggest me which one is the most convenient place for the solo trip from all these beautiful locations?

' src=

Thanks for sharing.

' src=

Damn good post. Loved every bit of it.

However, in Sirmaur, the only solo travel worthy place (which is truly offbeat) is not around the Renuka Lake side of things.

Its in a forest called Kangojodi. Do check that out too! 🙂

Hi Jitaditya,

I am from Himachal and I feel so glad that you have identified true hidden gems of the state. I would like to suggest you to add one more offbeat destination to your list. It is near Rampur Bushahr, any one who has visited Kinnaur knows about Rampur. 24kms from Rampur, Green Valley has less than 10 villages, Daranghati Wildlife Sanctuary and is densely covered with apple orchards. You can get more information from the website http://www.theconiferstay.com . I hope you find this place worthy to be added in your offbeat destinations.

If you are an artist or an art enthusiast, you’ll fall in love with Andretta.

This is one of the unexplored places in Himachal Pradesh that has got little tourist attention. This village is anything but another ordinary Himalayan offbeat place.

There is an interesting backstory about this place.

This artistic village is one of its kind and thanks to Norah Richards, an Irish writer and dramatist.

During the British days, Norah Richards arrived in Andretta, bidding goodbye to England forever. Thereafter, there was no looking back.

Being an Irish actress, writer and theatre artist, her love for theatre was infectious and soon her students started picking up the art.

Every year she organized a theatre festival and attracted a lot of artists, Prithvi Raj Kapoor, a pioneering figure in India, being a regular performer!

  • Visit Sobha Singh Art Gallery . This museum displays the original creation of popular artist Sobha Singh.
  • Visit Norah Richards’s house . Is there anything better than visiting the founder’s house? Don’t miss the small outdoor theatre located right outside the house.
  • Find your inner peace at Tashi Jong Khampagar Monastery . It is about 12 km from Andretta.
  • Experience India’s oldest working studio pottery – Andretta Pottery and Craft Society .
  • Don’t miss Palampur Tea Gardens . The abundance of tea plantation, lush green gardens with a backdrop of the Dhauladhar range will leave you speechless. The tea garden is about 13 km from Andretta.

By Air : Gaggal Airport (Dharamshala) is 45 km away.

By Rail: The major railhead is Pathankot, which is 90 km away.

By Road: The below is the distance from various cities/towns.

 Dharamshala: 45 km/ 1.5 hour.

Palampur: 13 km. It takes about 20-30 minutes by road.

Delhi: Buses regularly ply to Dharamshala and Palampur. Hop on from any of the places to reach Andretta.

The Mirage Andretta, is a popular homestay hideaway in the mountains. The prices usually start from (INR 7000 onwards).

For budget options, check out Hotel Peak Bound, 2 km away (INR 1000 onwards), Hotel Highland Regency, 10 km away (INR 1000 onwards), Andretta Homestay (call them on 0912966660),

There are other accommodation options that are a little away from Andretta. There is Welcome Heritage (INR 4000 onwards), Sterling Banquet & Hotel , 10 km away (INR 2500 onwards), Chimbalhar Homestay

Depending upon the type of holiday and excursions, 1 to 4 days are enough.

March to June & Mid-September to November.

NALDEHRA (near Shimla)

unknown tourist places in himachal pradesh

This enchanted town, tucked away from the hustle-bustle of Shimla, is one of our favourite unexplored places in Himachal. This small and sleepy town will fill your heart with awe.

The place is perfect for unwinding and indulging in activities amidst gorgeous terrain.

The erstwhile British Viceroy Lord Curzon discovered Naldehra. He was so mesmerised by the place that he built a massive golf course.

Naldehra is famous as one of the oldest golf courses in the country. An 18-hole golf course is by far the most challenging golf course in India.

It won’t be wrong to say that Naldehra is every photographer’s delight!

  • Play at the most prominent golf course . The golf course is at a height of 6000 feet and is amongst the highest and oldest golf courses in India.
  • Enjoy the pony ride . If you are adventurous and love being in nature, you can’t go wrong with this activity. Some local vendors offer pony rides in surrounding forest areas.
  • Visit Mashobra . About 13 km from Naldehra, is this small town, at an altitude of 2146 feet above sea level. It attracts a lot of tourists for activities like biking, camping, trekking, para-gliding and so on.
  • Dine at the revolving restaurant . If you are up for some luxury experience, visit Shimla’s first-ever revolving restaurant. The restaurant offers a magnificent view of the might Greater Himalayan snow ranges.
  • Visit Chabba . This is another picturesque village which is 18 km away from Naldehra. If you wish to get triggered by an adrenaline rush, induce yourself in river rafting on the Sutlej River. Trust us, it won’t disappoint you.

HOW TO REACH

By Air : Jubbarhati Airport (Shimla) is 44 km away.

By Rail: The closest railhead is Kalka Railway station which is 112 km away.

By Road: It is 25km from Shimla. However, the roads are winding and treacherous, so expect a good amount of time to reach this town. Don’t miss the scenery while on the road.

There are many resorts, hotels and homestay options in Naldehra.

Some places that we recommend are: The Manor Service Apartment (INR 10,000 onwards) , Woodstock Resort (INR 3000 onwards), The Nilaya Mashobra ,(INR 3500 onwards), The Retreat Mashobra (INR 6000 onwards), The Chalet Naldehra (INR 8000 onwards).

IDEA DURATION

2 days or more.

May to September.

TOSH VALLEY

When you feel like escaping to the undulating hills and connecting with your inner self, straight away head to Tosh Valley. This precious gem is one of the strikingly beautiful, unexplored places in Himachal Pradesh.

Tosh is at the far end of Parvati Valley and does not attract too many tourists. If you are planning a trip to Parvati Valley, do not miss this quaint village that deserves your attention!

  • Take a walk through the Parvati River for mesmerizing view and to feel elated.
  • Taste Israeli food. Tosh has many Israeli restaurants and cafes. The experience and taste of food will stay with you. The Moon Dance Café, Buddha Palace, Café Freedom are some of the good Israeli places to eat scrumptious food.
  • Find some peace in Tosh Mandir. This wooden mandir is in the heart of Tosh village.
  • Trek at Kheerganga. This is one of the most popular things to do in Tosh. Enjoy lush green hills and the beauty of the Parvati River during your trek. The best time for this trek is April to June.

Tosh is a place where there is no direct access from any major city.

The best way to reach Tosh is from Kasol (20km) via Barsheni, Manali (96km) or Manikaran (15km).

By Road : Take a state bus from Manali (96 km)/ Kasol (20 km) and get down at Barshaini. From Barshaini, you can trek your way up to Tosh. There are also shared cabs available for this 5 km long route up to Tosh.

If you are looking for luxurious stays, then this isn’t a place for you. However, if you are up for staying in comfortable guesthouses and hostels, do not think twice about visiting this place.

We recommend Pink Floyd Café (INR 3000 onwards), Nomads Hostel (INR 2500 onwards), Whoopers Hostel (1000 onwards), StoneAge Café & Inn (INR 6000 onwards), Tosh Regency (INR 3000 onwards).

We recommend covering Kasol –Tosh – Kheerganga during your trip. For this trip, 4 to 5 days should suffice.

April to October. The weather is pleasant during the summer and autumn months.

PARASHAR LAKE

unknown tourist places in himachal pradesh

Chances are, you may have heard about this place or seen pictures on social media.

Amongst the scenic valleys of Himachal Pradesh lies beautiful Parashar lake.

In Mandi district, the place is nestled between spiralling snowcapped mountains of Dhauladhar Ranges of Kullu. The lake holds mythological importance, dating back to the era of Pandavas.

Those who are looking for adventure, camping, trekking and such activities in the surrounding vicinity will enjoy this pretty place. The panoramic views of the valley coupled encircling the lake are an enchanting sight to behold.

Primarily, this is a place where you can soak in the serenity, calmness, and beauty of the valley next to the lake.

For souls seeking some activities, we recommend a few things:

  • Visit Prashar temple . The Pagoda temple has a rich history and was built in devotion to Prashar Rishi, who meditated in the valley back then. The grand lake provides a glorious backdrop to the temple.
  • Go Trekking . You can find many adventure trails here around the year. A hike to the lake, with usually Mandi being the starting point, is popular. The trek is for about 3-4 hours, providing panoramic views of the Himalayan range.
  • Visit Hampta Pass . It is about 30 km from the lake. We recommend the Hampta Pass trek for the first-timers as the route is relatively comfortable. The pass is full of breathtaking views.
  • Go shopping in Mandi . It will amaze you how this quaint town has many shops that sell from garments to handicraft items to ornaments. To bring home some Himachali taste, you can buy dry fruits and spices.

The most common way to get to Prashar Lake is to first get to the small town of Mandi.

By Air : The nearest airport is Bhuntar Airport, which is close to Mandi. The distance is about 60 km. Hop on a taxi or bus that will take you to Mandi.

By Rail: The nearest railhead is Joginder Nagar Railway station, which is 55 km away.

By Road: Mandi connects to major cities such as Delhi (432 km), Chandigarh (200 km) and Shimla (131 km). From Mandi, Prashar lake is about 55 km.

The route will be Mandi – Bijani – Kamand – Baggi – Prashar Lake. The conditions of the road are average but not advisable during a monsoon.

The place offers two government-run guesthouses, Dharamshala and a couple of campsites. There are also a few hotels at the lake.

PWD Guest House . Check here for details. Contact them on 01905 222051.

Forest Guest House . They have basic rooms but offer excellent views. FGH is usually meant for government officials, but they do not remain occupied throughout the year. So, the chances are that they can allot the rooms for you subject to last-minute cancellation!

Dharamshala . This is the cheapest form of accommodation at the lake. This is a temple-run Dharamshala offering dormitory rooms at a nominal price. The catch is, the rooms aren’t clean and the washrooms are the problem as well.

Campsite . If you are looking for a campsite, consider this as a perfect location. Some campsites offer it for 1000-1500 for a day, including meals. They are not luxurious, so prepare yourself accordingly.

Alternatively, you can book your stay around the Mandi area. Check out Hotel Prashar Valley View (INR 2500 onwards), Tripper Nest Luxury Home Stay (INR 3000 onwards), Hill View Home Stay (contact property directly), Sri Prashar Homestay

If you are travelling by car, the trip can be easily covered in 2 days.

However, if you are planning a trek, then add a few more days to your itinerary.

If you are visiting Prashar for lush green valley, then from April to May & September.

If you prefer chilly weather with snowcapped mountains and lakes, then November to February is a perfect time.

It’s always a good idea to travel to unexplored places in Himachal as they are yet untouched by commercialization and have breathtaking views to offer.

12 Top Himachal Pradesh Tourist Places to Visit

From Pottery to Paragliding, What to Do in Himachal Pradesh

unknown tourist places in himachal pradesh

Puneet Dhakar /Getty Images

The mountainous landscape of Himachal Pradesh, at the foothills of the Himalayas , is made up of a series of valleys and snow covered peaks. It's deservedly favored by adventure lovers but also provides a refreshing escape for those who are craving crisp mountain air. Check out these top Himachal Pradesh places to visit. You'll find everything from pottery to paragliding there!

Shimla used to be the summer capital of the British Raj when they ruled India. Now it's the state capital of Himachal Pradesh. The town sprawls along a mountain ridge, enveloped in oak, pine and rhododendron forests. It's quite famous for its colonial-style buildings and historic railway. Some would stay it's overdeveloped and crowded these days. However, it still has charm. The old Christ Church, with its beautiful stained glass windows, is one of Shimla's most prominent landmarks. Another is the Viceregal Lodge on Observatory Hill. These can be seen on a historic walking tour of Shimla. There are plenty of adventure sports and short hikes on offer in the vicinity as well. Sunnymead Bed & Breakfast is an ideal place to stay for those who like serenity and fantastic food. The UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla Railway toy train is an iconic way of reaching Shimla from near Chandigarh.

Manali, with its soothing backdrop of the Himalayas, offers a blend of tranquility and adventure that makes it one of northern India's most popular destinations. You can do as little or as much as you want there. Located in the Kullu Valley, it's a magical place bordered by heady pine forest and the raging Beas River, which give it a special energy. The area is divided in to commercial Manali Town, and laid-back Old Manali where travelers congregate in inexpensive village guesthouses . Close to Manali, Solang Valley draws the crowds to experience snow. Plan your trip there with this Manali travel guide .

The Parvati Valley

As the season wanes in Goa, the psychedelic trance scene shifts more than 8,000 feet above sea level into the forest around Kasol, in the Kullu District's Parvati Valley. Festivals take place at Chalal, near Kasol, from late May until October. To get there, walk 30 minutes from Kasol, crossing the cable suspension bridge over the Parvati River and then following the picturesque riverside path to the village. Two of the biggest events are Parvati Peaking and Magica Festival . However, the Parvati Valley isn't all about parties. Another attraction near Kasol is Manikaran, with its hot springs and enormous riverside Sikh Gurudwara. The region has much to delight nature lovers and trekkers too. Find out more details in our pick of the top places to visit in the Parvati Valley .

Dalhousie is refreshingly less crowded than Shimla and Manali, and the surrounding Chamba Valley is a lesser-explored area of Himachal Pradesh. If you're after spectacular views, then Dalhousie is the place to find them. Spread over five hills at foot of the Dhauladhar mountain range, the town gets its name from founder Lord Dalhousie. It bares the distinct stamp of the British Raj with 19th-century churches and hotels reminiscent of that era.

Kalatope Wildlife Sanctuary is located a short drive away from Dalhousie. It's possible to walk through the sanctuary but a permit is necessary for a vehicle. Those who dare to venture further into the Chamba Valley will discover fascinating ancient folklore, temples, and tribes.

Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj

Nestled a short distance from each other in the Kangra Valley, the towns of Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj are home to the exiled Tibetan Government. The Dalai Lama resides in Dharamsala, and many Tibetans have followed him there. You can expect to find a strong Tibetan influence in the area, with culture being the main attraction. People flock to Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj to undertake Buddhist meditation and philosophy courses, Tibetan cooking classes, Tibetan language courses, and to receive alternative therapies. Volunteer work is another popular pastime. Those interested in sightseeing will find some fascinating museums, temples, gompas , and monasteries. Tsuglagkhang Complex , the official residence of the Dalai Lama, is a highlight. Our list of the top things to do in McLeod Ganj has more details.

Unfortunately, a growing influx of tourists has disturbed the peace in Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj. Head further uphill to Dharamkot or Naddi if this is a concern.

Palampur, Himachal Pradesh's tea growing region, is about an hour from Dharamsala in the Kangra Valley. Tea was introduced there in the mid 19th century by the Superintendent of Botanical Gardens in Peshawar, Doctor Jameson. You can visit the tea estates and even stay on one. The Lodge at Wah is an eco-friendly boutique homestay on Wah Tea Estate . It has eight rooms in three gorgeous, rustic cottages. Tea plantation and factory tours, and tea tastings are provided to guests.

If you're interested in pottery or art, don't miss quaint Andretta village, a 20 minute drive from Palampur in the Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh. The village is said to have been established in the 1920s by Irish playwright Norah Richards, who lived there during the Partition and is credited with the rise of Punjabi theater. Later, noted potter Gurucharan Singh (who started Delhi Blue Pottery), and painter Sobha Singh (who was known for his Sikh religious paintings), settled there. The Sobha Singh Art Gallery, housed in the building where he lived, showcases his paintings and personal belongings. The mud-plastered cottage belonging to Norah Richards is another attraction.

Andretta Pottery and Craft Society, a pottery production center, offers three month pottery classes for serious students . Alternatively, you can try your hand at the pottery wheel and get a casual lesson. The Society apparently sells its rangoli-patterned earthenware to FabIndia in Delhi.

Andretta can be visited on a day trip from Dharamsala or Palampur. Otherwise, The Mirage is a delightful, arty place to stay there.

Bir-Billing

Go past the turnoff to Andretta from Palampur and you'll reach one of the world's best paragliding destinations at the twin towns of Bir and Billing. The 2015 Paragliding World Cup was held there, for the first time in India, in October 2015. The peak paragliding season runs from March to May and October to November. Billing Valley Adventures and Billing Adventures of Himachal  offer paragliding, trekking, and camping. Other attractions are tea gardens and monasteries. Serene Palpung Sherabling Monastery offers periodic courses in Buddhist meditation and philosophy. Deer Park Institute provides accommodations along with courses on Buddhist and Indian philosophy. Don't miss visiting the groovy 4Tables Project cafe and art gallery in Gunehar village near Bir. They now rent out gorgeous rooms too! Guided walks in the area can be arranged.

Rudyard Kipling described Spiti as a world within a world. This remote, high altitude area of Himachal Pradesh is tucked away against the border of Ladakh and Tibet. It's only been open to foreign tourists since 1991, and still remains relatively unexplored. Part of this is due to Spiti being barren alpine desert that's covered in heavy snow for a high proportion of the year. Getting to Spiti involves a long drive, most popularly from Manali. The constantly evolving scenery is unforgettable and well worth the journey though. Plan your trip with our comprehensive Spiti travel guide and see spectacular photos of the Spiti Valley .

Great Himalayan National Park

The Great Himalayan National Park, in the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. The park has four valleys and covers about 900 square kilometers. Its remote, rugged and untamed terrain makes it sought after by trekkers but only the fittest and most adventurous reach deep inside the core area. There are several trekking routes , ranging from three to eight days, with treks between the spectacular Tirthan and Sainj valleys being popular. In addition, less strenuous day walks exist in the park's Ecozone buffer area, frequented by day trippers. It's possible to go on tours to interact with the villagers and learn about their activities.

Ecotourism company Sunshine Himalayan Adventures has partnered with Biodiversity Tourism and Community Advancement (a community-based organization, comprised of local villagers) to offer treks and tours. Permits are required for treks. Indians must pay a park entry fee of 50 rupees per day, and foreigners 200 rupees per day. It's free to enter the Ecozone.

Raju's Cottage , a renowned homestay in Gushaini on the periphery of the park, is an ideal base or stopover. You'll need to book well in advance though!

Jibhi Valley

Mubarak Khan/Getty Images

Ex-Army man Bhagwan Singh Rana pioneered tourism in the Jibhi Valley , about an hour from the Great Himalayan National Park and three hours south of Manali on the road to Delhi. (Aut and Banjar are the closest towns). However, tourism didn't really take off there until after 2008, when the Himachal Pradesh government launched a homestay scheme. Jibhi is the perfect spot to slow down, adopt a healthy lifestyle, and immerse yourself in nature. Stay at Bhagwan Singh Rana's Doli Guesthouse or Swiss Cottages . Activities include day hikes and treks, organic farming, and meditation.

Himalayan Golden Triangle (Thanedhar, Sangla and Sojha)

Himanshu Khagta/Getty Images

This off-beat circuit, actively promoted by Banjara Camps , attracts outdoor enthusiasts who want to enjoy nature away from touristy areas. It starts in the heart of Himachal Pradesh's apple country, in Thanedhar (around two hours from Shimla), where you can stay at Banjara Orchard Retreat. The Sangla Valley is located 9,000 feet above sea level in Kinnaur District, close to the Tibetan border, and offers trout fishing and trekking (including glacier trekking in March and April). You can also visit Chitkul village, the last village on the old Indo-Tibetan trade route. Sojha links the Kullu and Shimla districts, and provides more opportunities to venture into the wild mountainous countryside.
