How To Visit Plitvice Lakes in One Day: Croatia’s Most Beautiful National Park

Last updated on May 26th, 2024 at 02:25 am

plitvice lakes day trip

Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the most famous lakes in Europe and obviously in Croatia ;

A day trip to Plitvice Lakes is a must-add to your Croatia bucket list! If you’re visiting Croatia, you must experience the natural wonders of the lakes of Plitvice.

On my first trip to Croatia, while I visited Zagreb , I took a day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park; this national park and its breathtaking views had been on my travel bucket list for a while. I was very excited to go there.

I can assure you the photos you see online lives up to expectations; it’s a gorgeous place, even better in real. It’s a great day trip to take in summer and winter.

Here’s my travel guide on how to visit Plitvice Lakes in one day. And without a car as well for travellers who, like me, don’t drive.

How To Visit Plitvice Lakes in One Day From Zagreb or Split or Zadar

If you don’t drive or can’t rent a car, don’t worry, you can still manage to visit Plitvice in one day. Some buses go to Plitvice, and if the idea of going alone doesn’t appeal, you can also book a tour of Plitvice.

It’d be a shame to miss out on this amazing National Park just because you don’t or can’t drive. It’s one of the best day trips in Split, Zadar, or Zagreb.

There are plenty of great things to do in Zadar and Split as well, but adding a day trip to Plitvice is a great addition to your itinerary; you won’t regret it!

If possible, spend at least one full day at the lakes to maximise your trip to Plitvice.

Of course, it’s also a good option if you can spend the night over, but visiting Plitvice in one day is doable, so don’t worry.

Exploring Plitvice Lakes is a family-friendly activity, making it an ideal outing for you and your kids! If you’re planning a family trip to Croatia, here’s a two-week itinerary crafted with children in mind.

In this Plitvice travel guide, I will share my experience, my itinerary of my day trip there, and all the tips to visit the national park and plan a great day there.

Plitvice Lakes National Park Day Trip

Get from zagreb to plitvice lakes.

So, if you’re wondering how to get to Plitvice Lakes, don’t worry; it’s quite easy.

Plitvice lakes from Zagreb

Plitvice National Park is 140km (87 miles) from the capital, Zagreb.

It takes roughly two hours by car or 2h15/2h30 min by bus. During the peak season, summer, there are a lot of buses running through every day.

It’s relatively easy to book a day trip by bus yourself but a bit more complicated during winter as there aren’t as many buses going to Plitvice. But there is still the option to book a tour to admire Plitvice lakes under the snow.

The bus goes from Zagreb’s central bus station to Plitvice entrance 1 and entrance 2.

Of course, booking a tour is an option all year round, not only during the winter.

Getting from Zadar to Plitvice Lakes

Take a bus from Zadar to Plitvice – Depending on what route the bus you choose to take, it takes between 1h45 to 2h50.

Just like in Zagreb, most buses run daily between April to October. The bus goes from Zadar’s central bus station to Plitvice Entrances 1 and 2.

You can always book an organised tour if you don’t fancy organising your day trip to Plitvice Lakes.

There are two entrances at Plitvice Lakes where you can start your exploration; those two entrances offer you a few different routes to choose from, depending on what kind of time you have and if you want to take the longer route or not.

You can also find maps of those routes in the park and estimated times of how long it takes to explore those trails.

Plitvice Lakes Day Trip Itinerary

Getting around inside plitvice lakes.

Plitvice Lakes National Park covers over 73 000 acres of land.

Waterfalls link no less than sixteen lakes in Plitvice between the Mala Kapela and Licka Pljesivica mountains that compose the National Park of Plitvice Lakes.

Getting around Plitvice is easy; everything in the park is well indicated, and you follow the trail you chose for the day. I’d say it’s pretty hard to get lost there if you respect the rules, don’t go off the trails indicated by the park, and respect nature.

I can assure you that Plitvice Lakes in Summer is a great day trip, so keep on reading to plan a great day trip!

Plitvice lakes in one day

They are seven routes in total that go through Plitvice Lakes, starting from entrances 1 and 2. Route A, B and C start from entrance 1. Routes E, F, H and K start from entrance 2. The trails from entrance 2 are the longest ones.

The shortest route is 3km long, and the longest is 18km.

You can check out the four trails in more detail here .

My Plitvice Lakes in One Day Itinerary

We chose to do Trail B . It takes 3-4 hours , so we thought including a lunch break would be perfect for exploring the park without rushing and taking our time. Trail B includes a scenic boat ride on one of the lakes and a shuttle ride ( We choose to walk instead of using the shuttle, which is much nicer). This trail is very popular as you see many of the main points of interest in the park, and it’s easy to do in one day.

However, we could have quickly gone for trail C instead to see more of the park, as we still had plenty of time before our bus ride back to Zagreb.

Starting at Entrance 1

Our bus from Zagreb arrived at the entrance a bit earlier than anticipated, so we decided to check the souvenir shop to buy some beautiful blue rain caps as it was a wet day. And to see what souvenir I wanted at the end of the day.

As I already said above, we chose to follow trail B. After arriving inside the park, when it was our time to enter, we checked out the map with all the trails, and that’s how we picked trail B. I had done no prior research, and I regret it now, as Trail C would have been a better fit.

When you first go down, you’ll be greeted by the lower lakes; you can take some breathtaking photos on the way down to The Big Waterfall and see that it’s swamped.

  • Veliki Slap (the Big Waterfall)

day trip to plitvice

The moment you step into the park, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views; while it looks beautiful, it’s even more impressive. It makes you appreciate how wonderful nature is. I could have spent hours enjoying the views.

The first thing you’ll see arriving at entrance 1 is Veliki Slap, and I’d recommend checking it out first; it gets hectic. The photos above show the crowd descending the slippery bath to the fall. Those photos were taken in the afternoon, and it wasn’t nearly as crowded when we visited in the morning.

Once we finished the Big Waterfall, we followed the trail that led us through the lower lake of Kaluderovac and stopped by Supljara cave before continuing.

SIgn outside Supljara cave in Plitvice

I saw two people who fell on their butts. Luckily they didn’t hurt themselves, but that wasn’t fun. I’d say it’s OK if you miss it, it was fun to check out, but it was complicated to walk around as it was rainy, so be careful.

There are signs at the cave entrance to warn you about that.

Blue water at lake Gavanovac, one of Plitvice lower lakes on trail B.

After visiting the cave, we continued exploring, following the trail B sign to check all the rest of the lower lakes; Gavanovac; Milanovac, all the way to Kozjak, where we found the resting areas with some food huts and table to eat your picnic.

Enjoying the scenery and taking photos of the ducks.

I took photos of the ducks for a small break while visiting the park. We visited Plitvice Lakes summer time. However it was a bit rainy that day, but it didn’t make the day trip less enjoyable.

IMG 1022

After a break, we continued our route with the scenic boat ride on Lake Kozjak to join the other side of the lake.

The boat ride takes around 15min, and the view is beautiful; it was still raining a bit when we were cruising through the lake, and the mountains were smokey, which gave the landscape an eerie atmosphere. It was a beautiful moment.

IMG 1041

I’d have loved boating on the lake, but sadly, it was closed that day. I guess it was because of the rain.

At this point, you’d typically take the shuttle to join back at the entrance, as it is part of the trail. However, it felt like it would have been a shame to use the shuttle when we still had plenty of time left and could enjoy a pleasant afternoon stroll along the lakes to return to the entrance. We followed part of trail C to go back to the entrance.

Make sure to mind your steps, especially when you walk backwards.

For the little story, I was going back to try and check what was behind a mot and almost fell into the lakes as the path crumbled under my foot; I landed on my knee and handed the day with a bloody knee.

After a quick toilet stop to clean my knee there, we returned to the entrance, chilled a bit more inside the gazebo, and enjoyed the view of the big waterfall before returning to the bus station to return to Zagreb.

Best Time To Visit Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice is open 365 days a year, making it a year-round destination.

August and July are the busiest time to visit the park. I saw Plitvice Lakes one day in August, on a cloudy and rainy day; therefore, the crowd were less, and it was a delightful visit; the mist gave the National Park an eerie vibe, as you can see in my photos.

While rain may not sound appealing, it’s good as the water levels tend to be lower during the summer; therefore, the waterfalls might be less impressive, so the rains help.

The recommended periods to visit the park are Spring and Autumn. But Plitvice is an excellent destination to visit all year round as each season brings charm to the park.

During Spring, the waterfalls are roaring; in Autumn, you can admire the beautiful autumn colours and foliage; and in summer, you get the best weather.

Buying Tickets To Plitvice National Park

You can buy tickets to Plitvice online to save time.

Prices change according to the time of the year.

One-day Adult tickets // children tickets

Children below the age of 7 can visit for free.

If you’re travelling with a dog, your furry friend can also visit Plitvice Lakes in one day with you on the lead.

How much time do you need in Plitvice National Park?

If you plan on visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park, then you need at least 7h to 8h, in my opinion, to visit the park’s main attractions without rushing and enjoying yourself.

Tips To Visit Plitvice Lakes

  • Make sure to buy your Plitvice Lakes tickets in Advance – Tickets sell out quickly, especially during peak season. It would be best if you bought them in advance. The ticket you buy will have a time slot (which you can choose), so you can’t enter the park at any time. You want to buy in advance to get the best time slot possible.
  • Arrive for the opening time if possible – Even if your ticket has a time slot, it is still best to arrive before the allocated time as many people will be waiting to enter or to buy a ticket if you haven’t done it online. You can also check the souvenir shop.
  • Bring a picnic and snacks with you – you’ll spend a whole day there, so pack yourself a picnic or at least some snacks if you would instead buy yourself food at the park. There are resting areas with little huts that offer food service; however, it’s pretty crowded, so if you want to save time and money, I recommend you bring your picnic.
  • Start at entrance 1 – especially if you plan to visit Plitvice Lakes in one day; this way, you’ll get to the lower lakes, and you’ll be able to check out Veliki Slap before it gets even busier.
  • Remember to respect the rules – Plitvice is a UNESCO site , it is forbidden to swim in the lakes and never let any garbage anywhere.

What To Pack To Visit Plitvice Lakes In One Day

  • A good pair of non-slippery walking shoes doesn’t have to be hiking shoes, but you need shoes that hold your feet and ankles well to avoid injuries. Some areas of the park get slippery.
  • Sunglasses – the sun’s reflection on the lakes can feel aggressive, so wearing sunglasses helps.
  • Sunscreen – make sure to protect your skin, especially when you visit during summer.
  • If you’re visiting in winter, make sure to layer and wear a light jacket on top to block the wind and rain.
  • Pack some snacks and water – You’ll be walking a lot and need the energy to keep yourself hydrated; it is a workout.

This concludes my Plitvice Lakes in a one-day itinerary, which includes all the best tips for planning your visit to this stunning national park!

I had a fantastic time visiting Plitvice Lakes in one day; I’d recommend you stay two days, however, if you want to explore the park entirely. I know I’ll do that next time as I would love to visit Plitvice during wintertime and admire the beauty of nature under the snow.

But if you’re short on time, one day to see the highlight of Plitvice National Park is more than enough, and this travel guide gave you all the best tips to plan a killer trip to Plitvice! I hope you enjoy your one day in Plitvice lakes like we did!

✈ Best Travel Ressources To Plan Your Next Trip If you need help planning your next trip, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered! Here are my favourite websites and apps to plan a trip! ✈ How To Find Flights? My favourite website for booking flights is Skyscanner; it is a good comparator for finding the cheapest flights. Google Flight is also a good help when it comes to comparing flights. ✈ Where To Book Accommodations? The best sites to book accommodations are Booking.com or Expedia. They both allow you to collect points for a discount; it’s worth comparing the two as they often have different pricing for the same hotels. Another perk of Booking.com and Expedia is that you can sometimes get bundle deals for flights and accommodations, which can help you save a lot of money. ✈ Best Sites To Book Activities My go-to website when I need to book an activity is GetYourGuide when I can’t get a ticket directly on the website or if it’s easier to go through them. I always check if the price is the same, though, as the whole point is for it to be easier but not more expensive. You can also check out Klook if you need to book more than just activities and would like to get everything from the same website—(i.e. transport cards, car rental, hotel…). ✈ Other helpful travel resources – Radical Storage: If you need a place to keep your luggage for an extended period when you travel, I recommend using them. It was a great help when we needed a place to keep our luggage safely while we left the city for a few days. – TheTrainline : If you love to travel by train like me, then TheTrainline needs to be your go-to website for train travel in Europe. The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia (or in Croatian, Plitvička Jezera) is one of those places that simply defies words.

Made up of 16 interconnected lakes that tumble into each other, one after the other, in a series of stunning waterfalls, the Plitvice Lakes were designated as Croatia’s first national park in 1949, and later became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

The lakes themselves are absolutely magnificent, filled with crystal-clear water that changes color by the hour, but often appears as a bright turquoise that seems more suitable to a fantasy novel than a place on Earth.

Picturesque wooden boardwalks criss-cross the lakes, creating a fairytale-worthy environment where you can get right up close to the fabulous natural beauty.

I first became enamored with the idea of visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia after finding a photo of the park on Pinterest almost a decade ago, and many years, two trips, and several days spent staring in wonder at the lakes later, I’m still just as smitten with them.

Planning a Plitvice Lakes holiday involves making dozens of decisions about how to spend your time in and around the park.

Before we dive into details, let’s cover some quick Plitvice Lakes FAQ.

Should you take a day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park?

Short answer: you can, but where you leave from matters a lot.

In our opinion, the Plitvice Lakes are a much better experience if you can spend at least one night in the area, as you’ll be able to see the park shortly after opening and before closing (ie, when all of the daytrippers aren’t there!), you’ll have more opportunities to explore in case bad weather ruins some of your plans, and you’ll get to see more of the park.

However, we completely understand that depending on how your Croatia itinerary shakes out, that may not be possible.

If you do want to take a day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park, it’s best to do so from either Zagreb or Zadar. From these locations, you can either drive yourself or book a tour– this tour from Zagreb and this tour from Zadar are well-reviewed, popular, and will help you make the most of your limited time in the park.

In a pinch, you can also take a day trip from Split, but it makes for a very long day, and we feel it’s best accomplished with a tour– this one is a great option.

We absolutely do not recommend taking a Plitvice Lakes day trip from Dubrovnik, though you’ll find the occasional enterprising tour company offering them.

How much does it cost to visit the Plitvice Lakes?

The ticket price for visiting the Plitvice Lakes varies throughout the year, with the most expensive months to visit being June, July, August, and September (when ticket prices are roughly $45 USD/person for a one day ticket).

In the winter, tickets are at their cheapest, coming in at around $12 USD for a one-day adult ticket–so as you can see, prices vary dramatically!

One and two-day tickets are available, and discounts are available for students and children.

Be sure to keep an eye on the ticket prices–they have almost doubled since we first visited Plitvice in 2015 and will likely continue to climb. You can find the most up-to-date information on prices here .

Which is better: Plitvice Lakes Entrance 1 or 2?

We recommend starting at Entrance 1 for your first (or only, as the case may be) day in the park.

Arriving via Entrance 1 will allow you to start your day by admiring one of the most famous viewpoints in Plitvice Lakes National Park, explore the Lower Lakes, and then make your way to the ferry after a couple of hours of exploring and head to the Upper Lakes.

When is Plitvice Lakes National Park open?

The park is open year-round, 365 days per year, though some trails and access points close depending on weather–for example, the Upper Lakes often close during the winter.

Like most national parks, Plitvice has longer hours in the summer months. You can check official park hours for your dates here .

Can you swim in the Plitvice Lakes?

Nope! Leave your bathing suit at home–swimming is forbidden in the national park.

If you’d like to swim in some of Europe’s best waterfalls during your trip, we recommend checking out Krka National Park.

Can you bring food into Plitvice Lakes National Park?

Yes, and there are small convenience stores at the entrances selling snacks.

Of course, you’ll find more selection and better prices if you shop a bit further from the park.

Alternatively, there are some restaurants and snack stands available inside the park, so you won’t go hungry either way.

If you only have one day in Plitvice Lakes National Park, this is a fantastic way to spend it!

The Plitvice itinerary outlined here makes for a full day, but you’ll see most of the famous viewpoints as well as some of Plitvice’s less well-known but still stunning corners.

If you have longer in the parks, you can either explore more slowly, perhaps by focusing on the Lower Lakes one day and the Upper Lakes the next (that’s how we structured our first visit), or add in more trails and viewpoints.

The official national park website has several suggested programs for exploring the park that provide a good overview of what options you have–if you have a half-day or less to spend in Plitvice, for example, they have a program for that!

Keep in mind that this sample Plitvice Lakes itinerary assumes that you’ll be visiting in the summer, when the park is open the longest. Keep an eye on the time if you’re visiting during the offseason!

Morning: Start at Entrance 1 and explore the Lower Lakes.

By kicking off your visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park at Entrance 1, you’ll start your explorations of the park by immediately walking up to one of the most famous views of the lakes: the overview of Veliki Slap (aka the Big Waterfall) from across the gorge.

It’s a magnificent sight, especially in the early-morning light, and a great way to start your day.

Once you finish snapping 10,000 photos, head down the trail to the boardwalks, where you’ll be able to make your way around the Lower Lakes at a leisurely pace.

Veliki Slap as seen from across the gorge near Entrance 1 to the Plitvice Lakes Croatia

Mid-Day: Eat lunch near the lakes and hop the boat to the Upper Lakes.

As you follow the trails through the Lower Lakes, you’ll eventually arrive Kozjačka Draga restaurant and a large surrounding picnic area, which is located right next to the dock where you can board the ferry to the Upper Lakes.

This is a great place to rest and have lunch, whether that’s your own packed lunch or something from the restaurant.

The food at Kozjačka Draga is exactly what you might expect from a restaurant inside a national park: simple, expensive for the area, but filling enough.

After you finish eating and resting, it’s time to board the ferry across Lake Kozjak!

The ferry runs regularly, so join the lineup of people waiting whenever you’re ready.

Be sure to have your ticket ready when you get ready to board–since only one ride is included with your park ticket, the park staff will stamp it as you board.

Grab an outside seat if you can–the views as you cross the lake are lovely!

Afternoon: Follow the path around the Upper Lakes to Entrance 3.

As you wind further and further along the Upper Lakes, the waterfalls will start to be a bit more spread out–but so will the crowds.

This is where you’ll find some of the most peaceful lake views of the day, and if you’re lucky, you may even get to enjoy them alone for a few minutes!

The paths (a combination of wooden boardwalks over the lakes and traditional trails alongside them) are well-marked and will eventually lead to the tram’s Station 3, where you can return to the Lower Lakes and position yourself closer to Entrance 1.

From there, you can enjoy a little more time with the lakes, and potentially return to some of your favorite boardwalk views from the morning to see them under different lighting conditions.

Kate Storm in a pink dress twirling on a boardwalk when visiting Plitvice Lakes Croatia. Trees surround the boardwalk and water is running under it.

Early Evening: Find the postcard view of the Plitvice Lakes.

What better way to close out a day visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park than by taking in its most famous view?

There are two ways to get the famous postcard view over the Plitvice Lakes (you know, the view all the tour companies use to sell their day trips and that is the top photo on this post!)–and no, a drone is not one of them (drones are not allowed in Plitvice, so leave them at home).

First option: climb up the steep staircase near Veliki Slap. This was closed on our recent visit, but it’s generally an option. The downside of this option is that you’ll then need to climb back down, cross the lakes via boardwalk, and climb back up on the other side to reach Entrance 1 and fetch your car again.

The other way requires a bit of a drive, but is also a bit less hassle if you do it at the end of the day like this Plitvice itinerary suggests: head to 44°54’9″ N 15°36’27” E via car, park near the trailhead, and hike 5-10 minutes down the trail.

We lucked out during our first visit to the park and stayed a short walk from here, and we had no idea how lucky we were at the time!

Bear in mind that while you won’t generally find any park staff or get your ticket checked here, the area is part of Plitvice Lakes National Park and you technically need a valid ticket with you to visit the viewpoint.

Arrive as soon as the gates open… or even a little before.

Trust me: the experience you’ll have at Plitvice, especially during the busy summer months, will be dramatically different if you’re one of the first to hit the boardwalks than if they’re already congested by the time you get there.

As one of the most incredible national parks in Europe , it’s rightfully extremely popular!

During high season, purchase tickets in advance.

In 2019, Croatia introduced an online ticketing system for Plitvice Lakes National Park, which allows you to purchase timed tickets before you arrive, which then must be redeemed at the entrance number and time you selected when buying the tickets.

Tickets are still available to purchase at the park, however, the number of visitors per day has been capped at 10,000–so if you show up too late in the day, especially during the summer, you may find yourself unable to visit that day.

If possible, spend at least one full day at the lakes.

Even if you only visit Plitvice for a day, you’ll get so much more out of your visit if you’re able to stay the whole way through instead of squeezing in a few hours at the park (at the most crowded time of day with the harshest lighting conditions) on a day trip.

… Which means ideally, you’ll spend a night nearby.

Seriously: it’s worth setting aside the time during your trip to Croatia to spend a night at the Plitvice Lakes!

Don’t be afraid to climb!

If you look closely along the trails when exploring the Plitvice Lakes , especially around the Upper Lakes, you’ll notice several opportunities to climb up to a higher trail or vantage point–and the views are virtually always worth the effort.

Be prepared for crowds.

With over 1 million visitors each year and skyrocketing international popularity, there’s no doubt about it: visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia means dealing with a lot of crowds… especially during the beautiful summer.

You can mitigate this by showing up early (and staying late), traveling outside of peak season, and wandering further up the trails than most, but come mentally prepared for the fact that you generally won’t have those beautiful boardwalks all to yourself.

The Plitvice Lakes are in a very rural area.

Because of this, restaurant and hotel choices are limited, which of course lends itself to a selection of subpar restaurants that charge expensive prices for the area.

We recommend checking reviews before sitting down, enjoying the food for what it is, and generally accepting that you won’t have the best food of your Croatia trip while here.

If you are road-tripping to Plitvice, consider stopping at Rastoke on the way!

The village of Rastoke is absolutely beautiful, with waterfalls that literally run through the town and under the buildings–including under a couple of very picturesque antique mills!

We love Rastoke and think it’s definitely worth visiting (it won’t take more than an hour or two to stop by, explore, and grab a cup of coffee at one of the cafes), but it’s best to see it before you arrive at the Plitvice Lakes–as lovely as the waterfalls at Rastoke are, they’ll be underwhelming after experiencing Plitvice itself.

Ideally, you’ll want to spend at least one night either in or practically next door to Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes to help ensure that you beat the crowds to the park!

There are three hotels in the park itself, including a mid-range option at Hotel Plitvice and a (somewhat) more luxury choice at Hotel Jezero .

The budget option, Hotel Bellevue , gets more mediocre reviews than the other two but still offers an excellent location.

Be sure to book as soon as you can commit to dates if you’d like to stay in the park, as these hotels fill up fast!

However, there are also lots of home and apartment rentals right outside the park.

Keep in mind that as this is a rural area, you won’t find many large hotels unless you’re willing to drive a bit further.

Well-reviewed options like this guesthouse are fairly typical for the area–many options are part of small guesthouses that are housed in converted multi-family homes, that sort of thing.

Check rates & book your stay at Hotel Plitvice , Hotel Jezero , or Hotel Bellevue now!

When visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia, you’ll likely use a variety of methods for getting around, thanks to the park’s fantastic infrastructure.

Here are the most popular.

Obviously, hiking is the most popular and useful way to get around Plitvice Lakes National Park, and how you’ll spend the bulk of your time there.

The trails are extremely well-maintained and generally fairly smooth to walk across, so this is hardly mountain-climbing, but you’ll want to be comfortable with uneven terrain and moderate to severe inclines and declines to hike through the park without limits.

You won’t drive your car into the park itself, per se, but road tripping is, hands down, the best way to get to the Plitvice Lakes and get around the area as a whole.

Parking is available near each entrance, and you can also use your car to get close to the postcard viewpoint, though you’ll need to park your car and walk the final 5-10 minutes.

For driving to the Plitvice Lakes, we recommend searching for a rental via Discover Cars , which will search multiple rental companies to help you find the best price and rental contract for your Plitvice Lakes vacation.

Check rates & book your rental car for your Plitvice Lakes road trip today!

Plitvice’s tram stops at three stations throughout the park, including near Entrance 3, and on both of our visits, we’ve hiked all the way to Station 3 and then taken the tram back down to the more populated areas of the park.

The tram itself has beautiful views of the lakes, but most importantly, it allows you to explore the less crowded sections of the Upper Lakes without worrying about having to hike back!

The trams run every 30 minutes.

The ferry across Lake Kozjak will take you from the Lower Lakes to the Upper Lakes (or vice versa), and one ride is included with your ticket price when visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Because only one ride is included, we recommend riding the ferry out to the Upper Lakes, hiking up to Station 3, and then taking the tram back down when you’re ready to make your way back toward Entrance 1.

If you don’t want to drive yourself or take a tour when visiting the Plitvice Lakes , there is a bus that runs to the park, stopping near Entrance 1 and Entrance 2.

If you choose to go this route, plan carefully to ensure that you’re staying near a bus stop!

While you’ll want to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park in either the late spring, summer, or very early fall for the most popular park experience that is most commonly photographed, the Plitvice Lakes are absolutely a year-round destination and deserves to be on your list of what to do in Croatia .

This part of Croatia receives 4 distinct seasons, so while the greenery surrounding the lakes is lovely, don’t despair if your trip happens at an off-peak time–not only will there be fewer crowds, but just imagine how beautiful the lakes would look surrounded by fall foliage or snow!

Personally, we have our hearts set on visiting during the fall foliage season one day.

Travel Insurance — We don’t ever suggest traveling without travel insurance–anything can happen, and an epic trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park is definitely a case of better safe than sorry. Check travel insurance policy inclusions and prices for your trip here .

Camera  — We recently upgraded to our  Sony a7R III  and absolutely  adore  it, but whatever camera you’re comfortable with works–just make sure you have something with you to preserve your memories!

Hat — Parts of Plitvice Lakes National Park are very shaded, however, if you thoroughly explore the trails, you will also spend quite a bit of time in direct sun.

Closed-Toe Shoes — You definitely won’t need hiking boots to explore the Plitvice Lakes, but comfortable, closed-toe shoes that you’re happy to walk for hours in are best!

Snacks — Food in the park tends to be pricey, so be sure to pack some of your own snacks!

Comfortable Day Bag  — We currently use  Pacsafe’s sleek anti-theft backpack  and love it, but if you don’t want to shell out the cash for this trip, that’s totally understandable. Just aim for something comfortable to wear, not flashy, and medium-sized–we used a  Northface Jester backpack  for years and loved it as well.

In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

Great article! Looking forward to our May 2020 trip to Plitvice. Thanks for the info. Wish we were young enough to do what you are doing. Keep traveling.

Thank you so much, Sharon! Hope you guys enjoy the park!

Such a beautiful park. I was there when it was entirely covered by snow!

How cool! We’d love to visit during a snowfall one day.

Are there any benches along the way to rest at for the older set that do not have endurance anymore What route would you suggest for the elderly set? Maybe a mile walk would be about it

There are some benches, but it’s also a bit of a climb to most spots. I’d recommend starting at Entrance 1, as you’ll come to the view of the big waterfall almost immediately and can continue from there depending on how you’re feeling.

The postcard view is also a pretty short walk from these coordinates, and you can drive almost all the way there: 44°54’9″ N 15°36’27”

Other than that, you may try reaching out to the park and asking if they have a shuttle from the parking lot to the entrance or consider arranging for a driver. Even walking from the main parking lot to the entrance is a bit of a walk, unfortunately.

This is wonderful! My family and I are going to arrive at plitvice lakes at 1:15.  We are going to stay the night and explore the park till 4 the next day. What routes should we take the first and second day? Thank you!

Thanks, Tina!

In your case, I’d probably do the Upper Lakes the first day since they’re a bit less crowded and you’ll be arriving in the middle of the day. In the early evening, consider driving over to the postcard viewpoint to enjoy that before calling it a night.

The next morning, head to Entrance 1 as soon as (or before) the gates open and enjoy the most iconic spots!

I will be arriving at a busy time (around 10:30), and the next day I will have 2 hours to explore. What routes would you recommend for those times?

With such limited time, I’d personally head right to Entrance 1 and battle the crowds to see as much of the Lower Lakes as you can in that timeframe. Luckily, you’ll come across the iconic view of Veliki Slap almost immediately, so there’s a quick payoff!

If you’re driving yourself, keep in mind that parking can be a challenge, and you’ll likely have a bit of a schlep before officially entering the park.

A first timer’s guide to plitvice lakes national park.

plitvice lakes day trip

Croatia’s oldest and largest national park, Plitvice Lakes has long been renowned for its pristine natural beauty… but there is more to discover here than meets the eye. Beyond the terraced lakes and tumbling cascades lie a region home to fascinating history, rich traditions, and warm, friendly people. Here, Tasteful Croatian Journeys shares our guide for guests visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park for the first time. From practical information to choosing the right trail, this guide covers everything you need to know.

Walking trail over the lakes in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia's most famous national park

About Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park consists of 16 crystalline lakes, emerald-blue in color and connected by a series of more than 90 cascades and waterfalls.

The park has been divided into two sections, the Upper Lakes and the Lower Lakes, based on their geological features. The twelve Upper Lakes were formed on impermeable dolomite rock. The names of the lakes are Prošćansko Jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko Jezero, Malo Jezero, Vir, Galovac, Milino Jezero, Gradinsko Jezero, Burgeti, and Kozjak. The four Lower Lakes were formed in permeable limestone and cut deep into a canyon amid dramatic cliffs. They are Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac and Novakovića Brod.

A series of wooden footbridges and pathways snake over the lakes and around their shores providing gentle trails for visitors to wander, explore, and take in the breathtaking views. Portions of the park are also connected by electric boats and a “panoramic train” (this is not actually a train as it does not run on a track – rather, it is a very long bus).

Highlights within the park include Veliki Slap, also known as the Great Waterfall. At 78 m high, it is the tallest waterfall not only the park, but in all of Croatia. From certain viewpoints, the Sastavci waterfalls appear to be an extension of this, creating a dramatic scene from which the Korana River springs up and flows north toward the town of Karlovac. Numerous viewpoints throughout the park provide stunning views. The eastern ridge of the canyon which overlooks the Lower Lakes provides particularly beautiful views which will surely be familiar to those who have seen images of the park in magazines or on postcards.

The History of Plitvice Lakes National Park

In the sixteenth century, the area now known as Plitvice Lakes National Park was home to the Croatian Military Frontier which acted as a borderland of Hapsburg Austria to the Ottoman Empire. Perhaps it was fear of the Turks that inspired some to refer to these lands as “the devil’s gardens,” or perhaps it was simply the deep awe with which people regarded the dense woods surrounding the lakes. Legends were formed about this isolated and unexplored territory, telling stories of fairies, giants and other mystical creatures. Over the next few hundred years, the area saw many changes in rule with even Napoleon briefly presiding over the region. Marked by frequent turmoil, it remained largely unpopulated throughout that time.

The late 1800s marks the beginning of tourism in the region, with hotels erected for visiting Austrian royalty. In fact, some of the hiking trails developed during that time still exist today. Flash forward to 1949, and Plitvice Lakes National Park was officially opened, receiving UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. Tourism was booming in the 1980s, and the national park was one of then Yugoslavia’s most popular attractions. However, on Easter Sunday in March 1991, things took a tragic turn when Plitvice Lakes became the site of the first armed confrontation of the Croatian War of Independence. The rising tensions between Serbs and Croats led to shots fired which resulted in two deaths, twenty wounded, and four hundred tourists evacuated. The park was held by Serb rebels and hotels and other facilities used as barracks until August 1995 when the Croatian Army retook the region.

Today, admiring the beauty of the lakes and their glittering falls, it is hard to imagine the blood that once spilled on this soil, or the landmines which littered the forest.

Choosing the Right Trail

Plitvice Lakes National Park provides seven recommended routes exploring both the Upper and Lower Lakes. The park refers to these routes as “programs,” each with its own circuit identified by markers throughout the park. Each program has a corresponding letter and is color coded based on starting point. Visitors entering the park at Entrance 1 can choose between four routes, marked in green. The four routes beginning at Entrance 2 are marked in orange. Info panels at the park’s entrances also display the routes, and maps are available at info points.

The routes vary in distance and therefore in the length of time needed to complete them. The shortest route takes roughly 2 hours and covers many of the park’s highlights. The longest route can take up to 8 hours and tours both the upper and lower lakes. All seven of the park’s programs can be found on their website .

Walking trail options and map at Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

For visitors with only one day at Plitvice Lakes National Park, we recommend “Program B” starting at Entrance 1. This route covers the Lower Lakes and provides a great overview of what the park has to offer. It will satisfy travelers who are looking to experience the park’s main attractions, see stunning scenery, take beautiful photos, and connect with nature. Many of Plitvice’s most recognizable vistas will be seen on this route. If staying a second day, we recommend following up with “Program E” to cover the Upper Lakes beginning at Entrance 2. The combination of those two programs will cover the entire lakes area of the park.

Examples of different types of trails in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

The walking trails in the park are well maintained and safe. The vast majority of the paths are flat, though in some areas you may find stairs or an incline. In general, however, the trails are not challenging and appropriate for a variety of ages and fitness levels. Wooden trails snake over the lakes while dirt paths or stone walkways connect other areas. Be sure to exercise caution when on uneven surfaces. Mist from the waterfalls can also cause some areas to be slippery.

The boat and "panoramic train" (shuttle bus) within Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Some of the programs involve an electric boat or panoramic train ride in addition to the walking trails. These provide a relaxing and scenic way to cover more ground at the park. Your entrance ticket should be kept on you at all times and grants access to both the boat and train. Schedules vary with season, so be sure to check the timetable at one of the info points.

The forest beyond the lakes in Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Beyond the Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park encompasses an area of just under 300 square kilometers with the lakes themselves comprising just 1% of this expanse. The remainder of the park is made up of a wooded forest of beech, fir and pine trees which is home to deer, bears, wolves, wildcats and rare bird species – a paradise for nature lovers and curious travelers alike.

In addition to the walking routes which circle the Lower and Upper Lakes, hiking trails provide the opportunity to explore the wooded areas and surrounding mountains. Beyond the park, this region is a wonderful place to enjoy activities such as river kayaking, cycling, horseback riding, ziplining, and more. Our Tasteful Croatian Journeys Concierge, Mirela, is happy to make these arrangements for our travelers. Roughly 30 minutes north of Plitvice Lakes National Park is the small town of Rastoke. Popular among tourists for its cascading waterfalls, this village provides a nice opportunity to stop and stretch one’s legs when making the drive to Plitvice Lakes National Park from Zagreb.

Practical Information

Tickets – Tickets to Plitvice Lakes National Park must be purchased a minimum of 2 days before entering the park. Tickets can be purchased for a single day, or multiple days, and must include an entrance time and gate for your first point of entry. There are two entrances to the park. If you choose to do a multi-day ticket, entrance on your first day must be at the time and entrance specified on the ticket. On all subsequent visits you may enter through any of the park’s entrances. You will be able to enter the park 30 minutes before, or up to 1 hour after the time specified on your ticket. Tickets can be purchased on the Plitvice Lakes National Park website .

Facilities – Info points, trail maps, luggage storage, ATMs, currency exchange, restrooms, souvenir shops, and restaurants can all be found at both Entrance 1 and Entrance 2 of the park. Several government run National Park hotels are also located at Entrance 2 of the park.

Within the park there are several restaurants and cafés serving simple fast food such as grilled meats, sandwiches, or pastries and hot or cold drinks. They are located at the P3 Electric Boat stop and the St1, St2 and St3 panoramic train stops. Restrooms can also be found at those locations. Just outside the park several restaurants with more expansive menus can be found. More on those and the hotels below.

The Tasteful Croatian Journeys team with their guide, Marijana, at Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Guides – A guide is not required to tour Plitvice Lakes National Park and the well-marked routes make the park easy to navigate on one’s own. However, for those seeking deeper insight to the park’s ecology and history, we highly recommend a private guided tour. Not only will a local guide share their valuable knowledge about the national park, but also about the region, its culture, and its unique traditions.

What to W ear – When touring the park, it is important to wear the appropriate clothing and footwear. Sneakers, hiking boots, or comfortable walking shoes are recommended with a non-slip sole that is suitable for a variety of surfaces such as wood, stone and dirt. Do not wear flip-flops! Mist from the waterfalls or rain showers can also cause wet conditions for which a waterproof jacket is advisable. In the summer, lightweight clothing as well as a hat, sunglasses, and sunblock are recommended. In cooler temperatures, plan on long pants and heavier clothing. Be sure to bring a bottle of water as it is important to stay hydrated.

The Plitvice Holiday Resort and Fenomen Plitvice Resort, Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Where to Stay – There are a number of government run hotels located at Entrance 2 of the park. These include Hotel Jezero , Hotel Plitvice , and Hotel Bellevue . They all provide simple but clean and affordable accommodation with an ideal location exploring the lakes. For something more unique, consider one of the following.

  • Plitvice Holiday Resort – This complex offers a little bit of everything, from bungalows and lake houses to tipi camps and RV parking – but the real gem are the treehouses which house up to 4 people in elevated apartments set among pines just across from a small manmade lake.
  • Fenomen Plitvice Resort – The most luxurious of Plitvice Lakes accommodation, the Fenomen is a 4-star property located within the boundaries of the national park, a short walk from the peak of the highest waterfall. The property is made up of beautifully designed wood cabins which retain the traditional style of the region while offering travelers a comfortable and stylish abode. One-bedroom suites feature fireplaces, with a basket a wood ready for you to create your cozy indoor respite from the wilderness.
  • Hotel Degenija – This 4-star family-run property exudes warmth and hospitality from the moment you enter. Rooms are tasteful, clean and comfortable, but the real draw is the lovely outdoor swimming pool set on a hill with a view of the surrounding mountains. Hotel Degenija also features two restaurants, detailed further below.

Where to Eat – The cuisine of Croatia’s rugged and mountainous interior reflects the rich variety of natural ingredients available to the region. Here you will find a great number of restaurants offering rural, traditional meals, which focus on wild game, freshwater fish, and an array of hearty vegetables. National Restaurant Lička Kuća , located just outside Entrance 1 of Plitvice Lakes National Park, is an homage to the region and its cuisine. The enormous restaurant is decorated in the traditional style with artifacts from the region on display for visitors. In the center of the restaurant, an open hearth displays lamb roasting on a spit and “ peka ” (a hearty meat and vegetable dish) cooking under an iron dome. The restaurant makes use of regional recipes and locally sourced products. Farther afield, Hotel Degenija has two restaurants which have become popular dining spots for both locals and in-the-know travelers alike. The first is the recently renovated Restaurant Degenija which is well known for its quality cuisine, ranging from traditional meat dishes to grilled local trout to freshly made pizzas. The second is Bistro & Caffe Plum , a stylish café which offers international cuisine and impressive cocktails in a modern space with an inviting terrace. Finally, if seeking something a bit upscale, try Restoran Kozjak at the Fenomen Plitvice Resort. The interior resembles a modern hunting lodge with rustic wood ceilings and antlers as décor. The menu features traditional meals with a sophisticated touch, such as smoked trout bruschetta or ravioli stuffed with honey and traditional basa cheese from the Lika region.

One of the most spectacular places to visit on a trip to Croatia is undoubtedly Plitvice Lakes National Park. And while nature enthusiasts could probably spend days exploring the park, many travellers opt to go on a Plitvice Lakes day trip from Split or Zagreb.

If you wondering what is the best way to go about this, then here’s everything you need to know about travelling from here from Zagreb and Spilt as well as how to make the most of your limited time in the national park!

Table of Contents

How to Get from Split to Plitvice Lakes

There are three main options to get from Split to Plitvice Lakes: organised tour, car or bus.

For travellers short on time, one of the most popular ways to visit the national park is by taking a Plitvice Lakes Tour from Split.

Most tour options will include transfers to and from your hotel in Split and a guide to help you get the most out of your time in the park. Most tours do not include entrance fees into the park which need to be paid separately upon arrival.

One of the most highly rated options is this small guided tour that departs from Split or Trogir. It includes a tour of the national park with an engaging guide and the option to have lunch at a local tavern after your walk.

Another good option is this tour that departs from Split but drops you off in Zagreb at the end of the day. This is ideal if you’re short on time and want to minimise travel days.

Travellers who value their privacy or are in a large group can also organise a private tour.

Keep in mind though that the disadvantage of taking a tour is that you will likely arrive at the same time as many other tour groups which means the park will be very busy, particularly in the summer months.

You also will be pressed for time on a tour, so it’s not a great option if you want to spend longer in the park.

Viewpoint from Entrance 1

If you’re on a budget while travelling in Croatia , then taking the bus from Split to Plitvice Lakes is the best option.

There are regular buses throughout the day, particularly during the summer months, however, if you want to make the most of your time at the national park, then you should take the 7 AM bus from Split which will get you to the park around 10:30 AM.

A better option if you want to avoid the crowds, is to take a bus from Split to Plitvice Lakes the night before, get accommodation near the entrance of the park and then have a full day to explore. This will mean you can avoid the crowds for the first couple hours of the day.

Gorgeous lakes of Plitvice

Arguably the best way to do a Plitvice Lakes day trip from Split is by renting a car and driving. This gives you the flexibility to drive up the night before, stay at one of the numerous guest houses which don’t necessarily need to be right at the entrance of the park and get an early start the next day to explore the park.

If you’re planning to rent a car in Croatia, then Rentalcars.Com is the best way to find a good deal as they compare prices across all the major car rental companies.

Taking out third-party excess insurance from iCarHireInsurance can be a good option, as well, as it covers you for any deductible should you need to make a claim.

Expect driving one way from Split to Plitvice Lakes to take approximately 3 hours.

Veliki Slap is a must see on your Plitvice Lakes day trip from Seville

How to Get from Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes

Similarly to if you’re travelling from Split , then you have three main options for taking a Plitvice Lakes day trip from Zagreb: organised tour, bus or driving.

There are several Plitvice Lakes tours from Zagreb that travellers can take if they want the convenience of this option.

Many tours, such as this highly-rated tour also stop at the village of Rastoke which is a picturesque place that is pleasant to wander through. Many of the tours from Zagreb also include admission tickets to Plitvice Lakes.

If you’re maximising your time spent in Croatia, then you can also take this guided tour which drops you off in Split at the end of the day.

You can organise a private tour if you’re a larger group.

Similarly to if you’re taking a day trip from Split , the bus from Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes is the most affordable option for budget travellers.

There are morning buses from Zagreb that arrive in Plitvice Lakes about 2.5 hours later. There are then a few return buses departing in the late afternoon to travel back to Zagreb.

To make the most of your day trip, I suggest taking the bus the night before you intend to visit and then getting an early start to explore the park!

More beautiful waterfalls in the Lower Lakes

The driving distance from Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes is just over 2 hours so this gives travellers a few more options when planning a Plitvice Lakes day trip from the Croatian capital.

If you’re happy to get an early start, then driving from Zagreb still allows you to get to the park early enough to beat the majority of tour groups. Otherwise, driving up the night before will allow you to make the most of your visit.

Many car rental companies also allow you to pick up your car in Zagreb and then drop it off somewhere else in Croatia (like Split or Dubrovnik) for a minimal additional fee.

Plitvice Lakes Day Trip Tips

Regardless of whether you’re planning on taking a Plitvice Lakes day trip from Split or Zagreb, or whether you will travel independently or on an organised tour, here are some tips and things to consider to ensure you make the most of your time at this natural wonder!

Best Time to Visit Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes is one of the most highly visited attractions in all of Croatia with daily admissions reaching a peak of 17,000 people in the busy summer months. This has led to concerns about overtourism in the park and measures being put in place to protect this national park.

One such measure is the cost of tickets varies dramatically throughout the year with summer prices reaching €40 compared to €10. Prices in the shoulder season of April to May & October are currently €23 for full-price entry.

Keep in mind that concession prices are available for students and children over 7. Those under age 7 and people with disabilities can enter the park for free.

If you want to minimise the strain on the national park while also having fewer visitors to contend with, then I strongly urge you to consider visiting in the winter or shoulder months. Parts of the park do end up closing in the winter months so it’s best to go earlier or later in the winter to try and avoid any closures.

Buying Tickets for Plitvice Lakes

You’ll need to purchase your tickets in advance if travelling independently to Plitvice Lakes. You can do that at the official website here. Tickets don’t need to be printed and can be shown on your mobile device when entering the park.

When purchasing your tickets, you will be given the option of choosing Entrance 1 or Entrance. If you’re planning on arriving early, then I suggest choosing Entrance 1 as this is the most popular part of the park and you can then see it before the majority of tours arrive.

Alternatively, Entrance 2 might be a better choice if arriving at the same time when many tour groups arrive.

There is an electric train that goes between the two entrances which is included in the entrance ticket so you can easily travel between the two of them if you need to.

Choosing a Route

There are several well-marked routes in Plitvice Lakes to help you see all of the highlights of the national park.

If you have a full day and are starting at Entrance 1, then I recommend taking Route C. This will first take you through the Lower Lakes, allow you to take a boat trip across the lakes, explore the Upper Lakes and then take the train back to the entrance.

All in all, Route C should take you about 4 hours to complete. If you’re starting at Entrance 2, Route H follows a similar itinerary.

If you don’t want to walk for as long, then Route A or B are shorter alternatives. Finally, Route K is designed for hikers who are looking for a longer and more challenging walk through the park.

Generally, the routes are all fairly well marked, however, it’s a good idea to download Maps.Me on your phone so you have a reference point if you get confused.

Dress Appropriately

When planning a Plitvice Lakes day trip from Split or Zagreb, it’s important to remember that the weather here can be quite different from the Croatian coast!

Regardless of the season, it’s worth packing a rain jacket to ensure you stay dry while visiting the park. The temperatures drop here a lot quicker in the autumn and winter months, so depending on the time of year you’re visiting, you also consider taking plenty of layers such as a fleece top as well as packing a beanie and gloves.

Finally, while the walking paths are typically wood-planked, they can get slippery when it rains so you should ideally wear a good pair of walking shoes during your visit to Plitvice Lakes.

Bring Lunch & Water

If you want to spend the majority of your day exploring the park, then I highly suggest packing your own lunch rather than relying on the restaurants in the national park.

While there are a few places to eat, they are fairly spread out and depending on the route you choose, it might not make sense to go out of your way to find a place to eat. Instead, a packed lunch allows you to enjoy a break at one of the many fantastic lookout spots in the park!

Furthermore, make sure to bring enough water to keep you hydrated while exploring Plitvice Lakes. There are only a few places in the park where you can fill up your water bottle, typically around where the restaurants are, so make sure you have enough to last you between those stops!

Take the time to visit Upper Lakes during your Plitvice Lakes day trip!

Where to Stay Near Plitvice Lakes

As we’ve discussed, I highly recommend visitors to Plitvice Lakes, travel up from Split or Zagreb the night before so they can get an early start at the park. Here are a few good options for places to stay.

House Turkalj – A small family-run guest house located about a ten-minute drive from Entrance 1 of Plitvice Lakes. They have a few private rooms with shared kitchen facilities as well as complimentary beer and rakija.

Hotel Plitvice – A mid-range hotel located right next to the entrance of the park, making it ideal if you don’t have your own transport. They offer private rooms suitable for couples or families and breakfast is included in the daily rate.

Falling Lakes Hostel – One of the best options for backpackers in Plitvice Lakes, this hostel offers a range of dorms and private rooms. They organise an affordable shuttle to the entrance of the lakes early in the morning as well as a great common room to meet other travellers.

Two Days in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia: A Family-Friendly Guide (2024)

Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest and largest national park in Croatia. It includes 16 large lakes and a lot of waterfalls as the water moves from the upper lakes, through travertine barriers, and into the lakes below.

We visited Plitvice Lakes National Park as part of our visit to Croatia during our Family Year Out when our kids were 5 and 7. We spent more than a month in Croatia, and Plitvice Lakes was a highlight for our family!

The color of the water here is astonishing- a deep turquoise that has to be seen to be believed. Don’t miss Plitvice Lakes National Park during your trip to Croatia!

In this guide to Plitvice Lakes, we’ll take you through everything you need to know to plan a two-day itinerary at Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia with your family. We’ll cover understanding the different park entrances, buying tickets, where to stay, and where to eat.

We’ll also talk about how much time to spend at Plitvice, and how to visit Plitvice on a day trip if you are tight for time.

While in Croatia, we also visited the towns of Zagreb , Zadar , Split , and Dubrovnik. We’ve got a fantastic family-friendly 2 week itinerary for Croatia .

What is Plitvice Lakes National Park Known For?

Plitvice Lakes National Park is known for the vibrant turquoise hues of the lake water, as well as its clarity.

It also includes the “big waterfall” Veliki Slap, located on the lower lakes, which is the highest waterfall in Croatia at 87 meters high.

Plitvice Lake National Park is one of the most visited places in Croatia. It was added to the Unesco World Heritage Register in 1979. If Plitvice Lakes isn’t on your family travel bucket list , it should be!

How to Get to Plitvice Lakes National Park

Unless you are renting a car, you will need to take a bus to Plitvice Lakes National Park. Buses run many times daily from Zagreb to Plitvice to Split, and the reverse. Buses leave Zagreb as early as 5:45, arriving at 8:10 am.

Purchase your bus tickets to “Plitvice Lakes”. Once you are on the bus, you can choose between Plitvice 1 (entrance 1), Plitvice 2 (entrance 2), and Mukinje which is a few km down the road, but close to several guest houses.

I found that not all the bus booking sites included the earlier buses- getmybus does. Our bus left on time but hit traffic and arrived about 45 minutes behind schedule.

Please Note: It is standard to pay extra for each bag you check under the bus. We paid about 1 Euro per bag. They only take cash so it’s best to be prepared with small change.

Don’t want to plan it all? Short on time? You can visit Plitvice Lakes on this highly-rated day trip from Split which includes a guided tour through the park, lunch, and transportation. We spent a week in Split and have got all the best things to do in Split , Croatia.

Heading toward Plitvice from Zagreb? This day trip from Zagreb includes a visit to the old watermill village of Rastoke as well as Plitvice National Park. It gets over 600 5-star reviews!

Worried about safety? Croatia is a very safe country, but a little preparation goes a long way. Our tips for keeping kids safe make sure you’re ready to go!

How Much Time Do I Need at Plitvice Lakes in Croatia?

We recommend spending 2 days at Plitvice Lakes National Park. If you arrive early in the morning, you can do Plitvice Lakes in one long day- but you will need to prioritize, and move quickly.

If you allot two days (or 1 1/2 days with travel) you will have plenty of time to explore the park without rushing.

Which Tickets Should I Get for Plitvice National Park?

You can buy tickets (in advance) at the Plitvice website . Children under 7 are free and do not need a ticket. Children 7-18 have a special reduced price.

Start by choosing the date you wish to visit and your arrival time. You will have one hour from the time listed on your ticket to enter the park.

We recommend scrolling down and choosing “Adult 2 Day” and adding to cart, then choosing “Children 2 Day” as needed.

Make sure to pay attention to the green tab at the top of the page that indicates “Entrance 1” or “Entrance 2” as this is the only place that this information can be altered.

You will need to create an account to check out and receive your tickets digitally. Be sure to have your digital tickets available as they are checked several times in the park.

Which Entrance Should I Use for Plitvice Lakes?

If you choose to spend two days in the park, you will probably spend one day exploring the lower lakes near entrance 1, and one day on the upper lakes near entrance 2.

Whichever section you plan to do first (which may relate more closely to where you are staying), should be the entrance you use on your ticket.

We chose to begin our family visit with Entrance 1 and focus on the lower lakes for the first day. Walking at our own pace, with two kids, and in mid-July crowds, we did the lower lakes from the entrance to the boat launch above Milanova Lake in 1 1/2 hours.

We returned on the second day via entrance 2 to explore the upper lakes.

Which Route Should I Take Through Plitvice Lakes?

The park provides routes labeled with letters- you can find maps and signage related to routes A, B, C, etc. We found this a bit complicated, and recommend following the paths described below.

We recommend splitting the park into upper and lower sections and then focusing on one section per day. Some people prefer to start with the upper sections (entrance 2) and save the lower sections (entrance 1) for a day with an early start to avoid crowds.

We visited in mid-July and did not find it necessary to avoid Entrance 1 on the first day. We arrived at about 11:00 after dropping our bags at our hotel and began with the paths around the lower lakes.

The lower lakes will give you the best views in the park- and I always prefer to hit the highlights first- then if it rains, or someone gets sick on the second day, you’ve hit the best bits first!

Navigation Tip: Make sure to take a photo of the large map at either entrance. There are paper maps available, but they do not label each lake. As you move along the pathways, you will often see lakes labeled with their name and depth. These names can be cross-referenced with your picture of the more detailed map to see just where on the path you are currently.

Day 1 Itinerary

You can easily flip day 1 and day 2. We prefer to start with the lower lakes and the most well-known viewpoints which give us a sense of the scale of the park for day 2.

Lower Lakes

(approx 1 1/2 hours to reach boat launch)

The loop around the base of the lower lakes is pretty straightforward. There aren’t too many places you can stray from the path.

Along the Lake

From Entrance 1, follow the path down toward the lakes. Stay right to head to the lakes, rather than take the upper cliff path (there are better views of the lakes on the opposite cliffs, see below). Once you are on the boardwalk through the lakes, you will reach a split. Head right to check out Veliki Slap (the big waterfall). After viewing the waterfall, you will double back to rejoin the trail you left.

While you are at the waterfall, look for a set of steep stairs to your left. These lead to the upper walking trails that look down over the lakes. They were closed for repair during our visit.

Once you are back on the main trail, continue along until you reach another decision point- you will see a large cave in front of you. If you like, head left to explore the trail up into this cave. It’s a bit steep and can be slippery, but our kids loved the idea of climbing through the cave (though any side openings are blocked off). If you go all the way to the top you’ll have joined the upper cliff trail, so go as far as you like, then double back to the main trail.

Around this point on the trail, the crowds should thin considerably.

Continue along this trail until you come to the edge of Kozjak Lake and the end of the lower lakes, where you’ll see an information booth, maps, and signage pointing you toward food and bathrooms.

Follow the signs to food and bathrooms. This is also where you’ll find the boat launch. Enjoy your lunch if you haven’t stopped to eat along the way.

Upper Cliff Walk

(approx 1 1/2 hours)

As you leave the lunch area, head back in the direction you can along the paved road. You’ll see most people staying right along a dirt road (which you came in on). Instead, head left uphill on the paved road. When you come to a split, stay left, following the sign “Poljanak Selo Plitvica”. After a bit of walking, you’ll see cars up ahead, and an information booth. You are on the right track!

Just after this booth, start watching for a dirt trail on your right. You’ll find it about 50 feet after a large sign with four different locations listed on it, which faces away from you. Take the dirt path and follow it to find 6 different overlooks with amazing views of the lakes and trails below.

The Last Overlook

Eventually, you’ll come to the stairs leading down to Veliki Slap (which will probably be closed). Keep going on the trail to find Overlook #5. This looks to be the end of the trail- but there’s one more!

Follow the dirt trail to the road, and continue along the paved road, over the bridge, turning right onto another dirt trail just past the restored mill. Follow this to find the last overlook which looks back on Overlook #5.

You can now either take the stairs down to the water (if they are open), or follow the trail back the way you came. We took the trail back to the boat launch and enjoyed a leisurely boat ride across the lake to end our day at Entrance #2.

The wonderful thing about these upper trails is that they are mostly shaded, so perfect for hot afternoons, and they are barely visited, so you’ll most likely have the trail to yourself.

Please note: the shuttle buses and boats are included in your ticket, there is no extra charge.

Day 2 Itinerary

For your second day in the park, try to get as early a start as you can. Most tour and bus groups reach the park at about 10 a.m., so any time prior to this will be more pleasant and less crowded.

Upper Lakes

We suggest focusing on the upper lakes, which are physically higher (from sea level) than the lower lakes. This section of the park is less awe-inspiring and includes more stairs, as you gradually ascend up through the lakes.

Start at Entrance 2 and take a boat from P1 to P2. It’s a very short ride across the water.

Once you exit the boat, you’ll see that there is really only one path to follow. The goal for the day is to do a loop around the upper lakes, along the lake edge. In general, you’ll want to follow signs for the “E” path, which will take you to the highest point, at Tram Station 3 (St. 3).

Travel Tip: When you reach the first edge of Galovac Lake, there is a wide area with benches and places to sit next to the lake. This is a great place to stop for a snack or just a break, before continuing on.

At the tram station, you can grab a cold drink or a cold sandwich before deciding on your route for the return. We opted to walk back along the lakeside but found little new on the return journey, and had to wait in a line to get back a boat across the water. To take this route, head back the way you came and follow the signs for “P2”.

The alternative is to take the tram ride around the lake and back to Entrance 2.

Alternate Activity: Rowboats

You can rent a rowboat from near the boat launch at P1. It costs 13€ per hour. We considered doing this as it looked very peaceful to be rowing out close to some of the smaller waterfalls but decided against it in the blazing July sunshine.

Eating Lunch at Plitvice Lakes National Park

If you can figure out the logistics, your best option is a picnic lunch inside Plitvice National Park. You’ll see many families sitting to the side of the trail, enjoying a snack or a quick lunch.

There is no obvious security check, or restrictions on what you bring with you, so no need to worry about bringing in your own food.

With an early bus ride, we did not have food with us and had to eat lunch at the park facilities.

The main eating area is next to the boat launch at P3. Here you will find two grills, a souvenir shop, a coffee/snack booth, and an ice cream booth, as well as bathrooms.

You will find the same (a bit expensive) options at all the grills and bistros in this section of the park: hamburgers, veggie burgers, ham and cheese sandwiches, etc. Portions are quite large, so consider sharing some items.

In the Upper Lakes portion of the park, there is no hot food at Station 3. There you will find coffee, and cold sandwiches only (ham and cheese, prosciutto and cheese, or just cheese).

Please Note: You cannot use cash at the grill/bistros, only credit. You can ONLY use cash at the ice cream stand.

Where to Stay at Plitvice Lakes National Park

There are two hotels inside the park: Hotel Jezero , and  Hotel Plitvice . These are both close to entrance 2. They include free parking and make early morning access to the park very easy. They tend to be more expensive than other location options.

We stayed at Guest House Wolf and enjoyed the family accommodations. It is a great place to stay if you are taking the bus as it’s an easy walk from the Mukinje bus stop. They offer breakfast and dinner (not included), and there is a market and a pizza place within walking distance as well.

The kids had lots of room to run around outside, and our family room included two twin beds on an upper level, a larger bed downstairs, a table and chairs, a small balcony, air conditioning, and a communal fridge just outside the door.

The hotel claims to be a ten-minute walk to Entrance 2 of the park. We found it to be more like 20 minutes going to the park (downhill) and 30 minutes returning. There are places that are closer to the park itself but require lugging your bags farther to and from the bus stop.

We also opted to have dinner their one night and it was absolutely delicious.

Can I Swim at Plitvice National Park?

No, you cannot swim at Plitvice National Park, you’ll need to stick to the boardwalks and assigned paths of the park.

What Time of Year is Best to Visit Plitvice Lakes National Park?

We visited in mid-July, which is in the high season for the park. The crowds are highest during the summer months. We also found that the waterfalls were not as full, we’d love to return in the spring when the waterfalls are rushing, and the crowds are lower.

The best times to visit are in the shoulder seasons around the busy months- Spring and Fall. The park remains open all year round, so you can also plan a trip to see the famous Veliki Slap (big waterfall) frozen!

Is Plitvice Lakes National Park Kid-Friendly?

Yes, and No. The boardwalks of much of the park are a bit uneven- they are cut from split logs. There are no handrails on the boardwalks- they are open to the water on one or more sides. Older children are not a problem, but you would need a plan for toddlers and less cautious younger children. Strollers would be problematic on uneven surfaces, so plan to baby-wear younger kids if possible.

Can I Bring My Dog to Plitvice Lakes National Park?

Yes, you are welcome to bring dogs with you to the park, but they must remain on a leash while in the park. We saw a lot of dogs enjoying the park with their families.

What to Bring to Plitvice Lakes National Park

There are several items you should bring to the park to make your day more enjoyable:

  • Good Walking Shoes: Since you won’t be going in the water, choose sturdy, breathable footwear. The paths are uneven and sometimes dusty.
  • A Cell Phone Charger: You will take a lot of pictures! Be sure to have a charger so you don’t miss any photos near the end of the day.
  • A Water Bottle : It is quite hot in the summer months and easy to get dehydrated. You have the option to buy water in the park, but the bottles are small and not cheap. We brought our own larger bottles and found that there are also free water filling stations at P3 near the restrooms.
  • Sunscreen : Some areas of the park offer more shade than others, but you will definitely need to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Bug Spray : In the shadier areas you may find mosquitos and other bugs. We love this family-friendly bug spray.
  • A Picnic Lunch: The park food is limited and expensive. If you can, bring snacks and a picnic lunch to avoid the park food.
  • Cash: While some places in the park only accept credit cards, some also only accept cash. Don’t forget to bring euros or you may miss out on afternoon ice creams!

Let’s dive into the specific details so you can prepare to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park in 2 days!

About Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park is the largest National Park in Croatia. It spans over 30,000 hectares (just over 74,000 acres.) The lakes are interconnected with several different waterfalls. There are 16 terraced lakes that waterfalls flow from. The lakes are characterized by the upper lakes section and lower lakes section.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is not only a National Park but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Due to the ecological characteristics of the park and its scientific importance is what determined the site to be included as a UNESCO site.

When visiting Plitvice Lakes, there are wooden walkways and hiking trails that go around and across the lakes throughout the park. Electric boats link the 12 upper and 4 lower lakes of the park. Unlike other Croatia lakes, Plitvice has a gorgeous blue-green hue to the water.

The easiest way to get to Plitvice Lakes for 2 days of exploring is to drive. Plitvice Lakes it close to halfway between Zagreb and Zadar. (Although a little bit closer to Zadar.) If you aren’t planning on renting a car, taking a day trip from Zagreb, Zadar or Split is an option.

Once at Plitvice Lakes, you need to determine if you’re going to park entrance 1 or park entrance 2. Depending on where you’re staying and what paths you’d like to take will help determine which entrance is the best for you. (We were near entrance 2 at Hotel Jezero.) More details on that later!

Plitvice Lakes National Park is open year-round. Plitvice Lakes winter is a unique time of year to visit with the snow. Peak season (and the time of year that will have more people) is typically from June to September. Visiting in late April to early May in 2023 was a great time of year.

While not all of the trees and foliage were in full bloom in early May, the water was stunning and the weather was perfect.

Plitvice Lakes opening hours differ by the time of year. Be sure to double-check the hours of operation before leaving for the park. During peak season the park opens at 7 AM but in other parts of the year, it doesn’t open until 8 AM or 9 AM. During colder parts of the year, the convenience or hospitality facilities are closed. The only hotel that is open year-round (that is affiliated with the national park) is Hotel Jezero.

Where to stay

If you’re driving from Zagreb or Zadar staying close to the National Park is the best logistically.

Hotel Jezero is the most conveniently located hotel to entrance two of Plitvice Lakes. It’s a short 300m walk from the hotel to the entrance. Not only is the location convenient, there are many onsite amenities offered at the hotel.

From the onsite bar, buffet,  ala carte restaurants, National Park gift shop, spa, wellness center, and onsite free parking. For the high season, note that this hotel doesn’t have air conditioning/central air.

Pro Tip : Be wary of the “attic room” option. This is the cheapest room option but the ceiling is slanted and the shower is really difficult. (I could barely use the shower well and it was almost impossible for my over 6-foot-tall husband.) If you stay here, be sure to select a standard room! Overall it was fine as we stayed just for one night.

Lakeside Hotel Plitvice is located 6 miles from entrance one of Plitvice Lakes National Park. This four-star hotel, although farther from the park has air conditioning and is a great place to relax after exploring the park.

For other accommodations close to Plitvice Lakes, there are many options on booking.com!

What to pack for Plitvice Lakes

When visiting Plitvice Lakes for two days you’ll want to ensure you have the following things with you:

  • Ample water (a waterbottle or camel bak style backpack)
  • Comfortable closed shoes (hiking boots or sneakers)
  • SPF clothing and long sleeves
  • A light waterproof rain jacket
  • A camera or GoPro

While the boardwalks are uneven and at times slippery, one of the most important things is to be sure you have closed shoes with laces. I was surprised by how many people were at Plitvice Lakes in flip-flops and sandals!

Plitvice Lakes Guide: Things to know before you go

Hours of Plitvice Lakes are different during peak season and low season. Be sure to know the correct hours based on when you’ll be visiting.

You can purchase Plitvice Lakes tickets in advance. This is really important if you’re visiting during the summer. At times the tickets will sell out.

Be sure to check the weather forecast before entering the park.

Please practice leave no trace principles while visiting Plitvice Lakes. Do not collect any natural specimens from the park as a souvenir. Refrain from feeding the animals. Dispose of garbage you bring into the park properly. Stay on the marked trails. And do not swim in the lakes!

Plitvice Lakes 2 day Itinerary

There are multiple different routes that you can take in Plitvice Lakes National Park when spending two days there. Realistically you could pack both of the paths into one really full day. However, when traveling from Zagreb on day one and arriving mid-day then heading into the park and on day two in the park entering when the park opened, completing a hike then heading to Zadar afterward.

There are two different entrances to the park and four different hiking paths that are accessible from each entrance. The trails or paths are marked by a letter. The hiking (or trekking) really isn’t strenuous and all of the boardwalk trails are easily marked with signs.

As you enter the park, as they scan your passes they were really helpful in asking if we already knew what path we were taking to ensure we were going to the correct boat and area.

The boats are P1, P2, & P3. P1 & P2 go back and forth from entrance two and P3 goes to entrance one across Kozjak Lake. Entrance one has trails that go near the biggest waterfall in Plitvice Lakes (Veliki Slap).

If you continue onto the trails from the electric boats from P1 & P2 you will go to the Plitvice upper lakes area.

In total there are 8 different routes that you can choose to take. Trails are named or marked by letters of the alphabet. The trails include A, B, C, E, F, H, & K.

E, F, H, K are all accessible from entrance two by taking the P1 & P2 boats. A, B & C are accessible either from entrance one or crossing the lake on the P3 boat from Entrance 2.

Click here for a Map of Plitvice Lakes .

Drove from Zagreb, before checking into Hotel Jezero, entered at entrance two (just a short walk from the hotel). Took the PI/P2 electric boat across the lower lake, then directly got into line for the P3 boat. Took an easy walking path (Trail F) which went near the Veliki Slap (the biggest waterfall in Plitvice Lakes.)

Pro Tip : During high season (summer) you will want to purchase your park admission in advance. During spring, we didn’t need to but did anyway. We purchased a two-day pass. What I didn’t know is I could have purchased a one-day pass and the hotel would validate it to make it usable for two days. Inquire with your hotel directly if you have specific questions about this!

largest waterfall in Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia when spending two days

Up bright and early at Hotel Jezero with a breakfast buffet that was included in our stay, our car was packed up and we headed into the park right when it opened. The P1/P2 boat from entrance two over only had three other people on it. It was a perfect hike! We had many of the waterfalls and the trail to ourselves the whole time. Definitely wake up early and be there when it opens, you won’t regret it! On day two, we took the E loop around the upper lakes.

One thing I noticed in comparison to USA National Parks is there actually is really great cell service in Plitvice Lakes.

Plitvice Lakes Two days Recap

There are definitely more trails and trekking you can do throughout Plitvice Lakes. But, in two days and the trails listed below you will see the upper lakes and the tallest waterfall in the park. Depending on how ambitious and fit you are you could do both in one day at Plitvice Lakes.

  • Day one : Entrance two, P1/P2 and P3 boat to a short walking trail (Trail F) near the largest waterfall
  • Day two : Entrance two at opening time, P1/P2 boat across the lower lake to walking trail loop (Trail E) around the upper lakes

Getting into the park mid-day on day one, there were a lot of people on Trail F. (Many of the tour groups go this route.) It would have been a lot less busy earlier in the morning closer to opening hours. You could also do the day two route then once back at the dock for the electric boats take the P3 boat and do Trail F earlier in the day.

A plitvice lakes day trip: how to beat the crowds.

Waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes

Croatia wasn’t originally on my European summer itinerary, but after its last minute addition, I discovered it’s home to a gem – The Plitvice Lakes National Park. Plitvice Lakes looks amazing in photographs, but it’s even more mesmerizing in person. The price of entry is a bit steep in high season, which admittedly almost deterred me from visiting. But I’m glad I made a Plitvice Lakes day trip happen; it was worth every penny.

Plitvice Lakes’ location in between Zagreb and Split makes it convenient for a day trip from either city. However, when coming from those cities you’d have to get up very early to beat the crowds that flow off of tour buses. Or if you’re ok with being overcrowded then take a day tour. But I will say this right now, it is a place where you will want a bit of space between you and your fellow travelers, so a DIY day trip is best.

To avoid the crowds get to Plitvice Lakes at opening, I opted to stay in the neighboring town of Korenica. When I arrived at my hostel in Korenica, my anticipation started to rise as I heard people who’d visited earlier that day buzzing about the beauty of the lakes and waterfalls. I also met two other solo female travelers  at the hostel and we decided to explore the lakes together.

A public bus stops in Korenica at 6:25 am and the majority of hostel guests were on it. We made it to Entrance 1 just before the park opened at 7:00 am. Even still, we were about the 15th people in line and we watched the line grow behind us as we waited. We paid our entrance fee, excited at the thought that we’d beat the crowd.

This post contains affiliate links, which means that, at no additional cost to you, I will earn a tiny bit of income if you decide to make a purchase or booking.

Plitvice Lakes National Park:  The Lower Lakes

Upon entering, we were immediately greeted with a jaw-dropping view of a large waterfall careening down the side of the limestone mountain into teal blue waters below. The rising morning sun highlighting the rushing water.

the first view of plitvice lakes national park

We made our way down the boardwalk, greeted with picture perfect vistas at every turn. The deep teal water contrasted beautifully with the grey and white limestone rock. As the sun rose higher it deepened the blue tones of the water. The sound of the waterfalls grew louder, promising that we were getting closer to the magic. After a final turn, we arrived at the base of the impressive waterfall we saw upon entering. The trail ended here, so we turned back to the route towards the upper lakes.

We were in search of the perfect bird’s eye view. This took us out of the park and away from the gathering crowds. We followed a dirt path, crossed a wooden bridge, and finally came to this view.

Pltivice Lakes Day Trip

An epic spot to take a breather and appreciate that places like this still exist. That humans haven’t ruined everything just yet. That nature is powerful and this place will hopefully last long after I’m gone.

Ok – enough with the philosophical stuff we were in search of a specific epic view – and this wasn’t it! Just to the right of this location we discovered a small path leading to a steep cliff. To our right, that same large waterfall was still in view. I spied another wall of waterfalls racing down from the lakes, very far below.

I waited at the top, claiming to be soaking in the view. But in reality, I watched my new friends clamber down the limestone rocks to get that perfect shot. I wanted to make sure they made it safely before I followed suit. Then knees shaking and barely able to stand up straight, I took my spot for this epic photo. Don’t try this at home kids.

Epic View of Plitvice Lower Lakes

Feeling incredibly satisfied with ourselves we returned to the park, opting to skip the long line for the ferry and chose a 45-minute walk along the K route instead; a beautiful stroll along the boardwalk bordering the lower lakes. We could see the fish swimming just as if we were snorkeling with them.

Plitvice Lakes National Park: The Upper Lakes

The path eventually took us away from the lakes and up the side of the mountain. After a steep 15 minute breathtaking (literally) climb we reached a viewpoint for another stunning wall of waterfalls and the upper lakes. I let the sound of rushing water wash over me as I promised myself I’d start doing more cardio.

Waterfalls of the upper lakes

We climbed about 10 more minutes and BAM, you guessed it, another waterfall viewpoint. Plitvice Lakes National Park is out of this world! The trail then took us down the mountain – and into the crowds. For the majority of the day, we’d been lucky to explore the park relatively crowd-free – a perk of getting to the park before opening. But it was now about 12:00 pm and prime time for tour groups and day trippers.

Plitvice Lakes National Park Day Trip

Hunger finally got the best of us so we settled in for a lake-front picnic. As we ate we watched tour group after tour group pass by. As much as we wanted to stay in that idyllic spot a little bit longer, and skip the crowds, we heard the rumble of thunder off in the distance. It was best to join the throng of people.

We tried our best to soak in the remainder of waterfalls while dodging foot traffic, but honestly, the rest of the park is a blur of waterfalls and annoyance. Visitors formed lines for photos, clogging up the boardwalk. We passed these lines, only to find plenty of space for photos, so we weren’t really sure why people were lining up for 30 minutes.

Waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes

We weaved our way along the boardwalk passing waterfall after waterfall. I have never seen so many waterfalls in one place! We finally found the ferry to take us to Entrance 2 and just as we boarded the ferry the rain began to fall. Perfect timing.

Waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes

We had a bit of time to wait for the bus back to Korenica so we had a mini yoga session on the grass with a view of the waterfalls and a soft rain falling. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

We found our bus home, climbed aboard, sweaty, happy, and with full hearts in awe of the gift of nature.

What to Know Before You Go

How to get to plitvice lakes national park.

From Split to Plitvice Lakes, it’s approximately 3.5 hours and from Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes, it’s about 2.5 hours. You can easily take a bus to Plitvice for a day trip from either location. Additionally, if you’d like to visit on your way from one city to the next, you can leave your luggage at the lakes for the day and then continue by bus, or car, to your next destination. However, this would make for a very rushed and crowded day, so I highly recommend staying at least one night in or near Plitvice.

Plitvice Lakes Accommodation

There are hotels in Plitvice, but I loved the hostel I stayed at in Korenica, Falling Lakes Hostel. They offer other activities, hikes, and it’s incredibly clean! Falling Lakes Hostel also offers shuttles to and from the park, for a fee. Or it is conveniently located near a bus stop that will have you at the park in 25 minutes.

Plitvice Lakes Hiking Trails

There are a number of incredibly well-marked hiking trails you can take. However, you should consult a park map prior to starting so you know how long the route you choose will take. The one described above was route K which encompasses the majority of the park taking roughly 6-8 hours.

6 thoughts on “ a plitvice lakes day trip: how to beat the crowds ”.

This is definitely on our list! You had so many amazing views and photos – would love to put this to use one day soon!

It’s such a beautiful place! I hope you get to go soon!

Great post and perfect timing, we are heading there in June. We thought about arriving there at around 8 but after reading your review maybe 7 is better… Do you think that in the afternoon it will be also very crowded with tour groups? Love your photography and detailed review, a perfect guide to these gorgeous waterfalls!

Definitely get there at opening, even a little bit before as June will be a busy month for them I’m sure. The afternoon is when it was the most crowded, especially near entrance 2. It makes me wonder if that’s where the day trip tours go first. But if you get there early enough you’ll be a step ahead of the crowds.

Gorgeous photos! What month did you visit Plitvice? My husband and I visited at the end of November and the trees were relatively bare. Great advice on staying nearby. We didn’t realize how many trails there are so didn’t set aside enough time for Plitvice.

Hi Sarah. I visited in July I believe. I think it would be great to visit in early spring, I think the waterfalls would be super powerful as the snow melts.

How to Visit Plitvice Lakes from Zagreb on a Day Trip

How to Visit Plitvice Lakes from Zagreb on a Day Trip

Plitvice Lakes is the largest and the most visited Croatian National Park. It’s so popular that as of spring 2019, the number of visitors is limited to 10,000 a day, to help preserve the lakes and the tufa formations. This year also marked the 40th anniversary since the park was admitted to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Situated in the Dinaric Alps region, the park covers an area of 300 km². It’s an ideal stop if you’re traveling to or from the Adriatic coast since it’s right next to the main state road that connects continental and coastal Croatia.

To fully experience the park, I recommend you give yourself at least a couple of days to explore. There’s an abundance of accommodation options in the area like hotels, private rooms, apartments, and wooden cottages that make you think of a cozy evening in front of the crackling fire while the hills around you are covered in snow.

However, if your time in Zagreb is limited, a day trip to Plitvice Lakes from Zagreb is still a great way to spend your day. The distance between Zagreb and the park is only 140 km (approximately 87 miles) and there are a bunch of transport options to choose from!

Where to Stay in Zagreb

Croatia - Zagreb - City View

Here are our recommendations for where to stay in  Dubrovnik. We’re in the process of creating comprehensive guides on where to stay in other Croatian cities, but for now, we recommend checking out Booking.com as early as possible or taking a look at the following places to stay in Zagreb.

Budget accommodation in Zagreb: If you are looking for a cool apartment to stay in town, with sun-drenched spaces, modern furnishing, and even a barbecue,  we recommend Apartment Spectre , it has great reviews on Booking.com . Another option is Centar Guesthouse , just steps from the main square, you can read reviews and book here .

Mid-rage places to stay in Zagreb: If you can spend a bit more, then we suggest you check Timeout Heritage Hotel Zagreb , in the heart of the lower town, here you can check prices and reviews. If you prefer the comfort of a rental home, discover Houzz21 , not far from the city zoo. You can book a stay here .

Luxury accommodation in Zagreb: Upgrade your days in Zagreb by staying at Art Hotel in the center of town. From this hotel, guests love the friendly staff and amazing location, check it here . Alternatively, check the newly opened Manda Heritage Hotel here .

Getting to Plitvice Lakes from Zagreb via Public Transportation

The Croatian public transport has a certain reputation, and it’s not a very good one. I have personally experienced a fair share of public transport dramas, from old buses that stop working in the middle of nowhere to unpleasant bus drivers.

There’s always a possibility that you’ll bump into unexpected road closures that make you go around and add a couple of hours to the charming experience that is public transport.

But don’t be discouraged. Yes, such incidents can happen, but they’re isolated events rather than a rule. Feel free to use public transport, especially if you’re on a budget since it’s the cheapest option when it comes to traveling in Croatia.

The best way to get to Plitvice Lakes from Zagreb via public transportation is by the bus that leaves from the bus station in Zagreb. There are 3-10 departures every day (depending on the season) and the one-way ticket costs between 75 ($11) and 90 kunas ($13).

You can buy the tickets online here or at the station, up to one hour before departure.

Zagreb bus station - four empty blue seats

If you’re buying online, make sure that you enter “Plitvička jezera” under destination, and not just “Plitvice” because the former takes you directly to the park entrance and the latter would take you to the neighboring village.

The drive would take about 2.5 hours. Bear in mind though, that the May through September period is the high tourist season in Croatia, and there’s a possibility of a traffic jam that could prolong the drive. For that reason, I would recommend booking an early departure (anything before 12:00 PM would work).

>> Read More: How to Visit Krka National Park from Split on a Day Trip <<

If you’re a train lover, unfortunately, you’re out of luck. There are no train lines that can take you directly from Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes. You could take a train to Karlovac and then take a bus to the park, but it’s a longer, more expensive option.

The train takes longer (it stops at every station between Zagreb and Karlovac to pick up passengers) and Karlovac to Plitvice Lakes is about 90 km (50 miles).

You would have to book two different modes of transport and spend more time and money. Logistically, it just doesn’t make sense.

Getting to Plitvice Lakes via Private Transportation

If you’re traveling solo, your best option is the public bus, but if you’re traveling in a group you might want to consider taking a taxi or renting a car and splitting the expenses.

If you’re opting for a taxi, the return trip would cost you about 2378 kunas ($352) per vehicle. The vehicles can carry up to eight passengers which takes you to a price of 298 kunas ($44) per passenger.

There are a couple of local taxi companies that offer transport from Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes and you can find them here .

It’s not a bad option considering the drive is more comfortable and shorter than the bus ride (about 2 hours) and if you encounter a traffic jam, chances are the driver knows a shortcut or a detour.

Car on the Zagreb Split highway

If you or someone in your group is a driver, I would highly recommend renting a car. There are a lot of options, and the prices vary, depending on the type of vehicle, insurance, etc.

We’ve rented cars dozens of times in the Balkans through various search engines and have settled on Discover Cars as the best car rental search engine – it searches over 500 trusted rental companies to find the cheapest price for your rental! Compare prices for car rental in Zagreb here.

It’s a simple drive, especially if you decide to use a Zagreb-Split highway. The drive takes about 1.5 hours. The exit signs for Plitvice Lakes are well marked, and the best route is to use exit no.3 (Karlovac) and continue driving on the state road D1 for about 80 km (50 miles). That way you’ll arrive directly at the two main park entrances.

>> Read More: 25 Insanely Instagrammable Places in Zagreb <<

You could use a state road on the whole route, but the drive might last a little longer, depending on the traffic.

For a round trip from Zagreb to the park, the gas would cost you about 200 kunas ($30).

If you decide to use a highway, you’ll have to pay a toll and if you use the exit I mentioned it will cost you 40 kunas ($6) for a round trip. You’ll also have to pay a parking ticket at the Plitvice Lakes, 10 kunas ($1.48) an hour during the high season (June 1 to 30 September) and 8 kunas ($1.18) per hour in the low season.

Town of Rastoke houses bridge and water

When you take in all the expenses, renting a car is somewhat pricey but the major plus of renting is the freedom to explore some beautiful and interesting locations on your route, such as Rastoke, a small village next to Slunj.

The village is situated on the state road D1, directly en route to Plitvice Lakes if you’re traveling from Zagreb. Rastoke is known for its waterfalls and watermills and it’s even called The Small Lakes of Plitvice.

The entrance fees are 30 kunas ($4.44) for adults and 20 kunas ($2.96) for students, pensioners, and children from ages 7-18. The entrance is free of charge for people with disabilities and children up to age 7.

Visiting Plitvice Lakes from Zagreb on a Guided Tour

Booking a tour is, of course, the easiest way to visit Plitvice Lakes on a day trip from Zagreb. In my experience, it’s the option most travelers opt for, mainly because they don’t have to plan a thing and the prices are acceptable.

I recommend this tour , it has a lot of positive reviews and, unlike most of the other tours, the park entrance fee is already included in the price. It will cost you 798 kunas ($118.14) and you’ll also get to visit Rastoke, take a boat and a train ride inside the park, and you’ll have a guide. Check prices and availability here.

plitvice lakes day trip

The Get Your Guide platform offers a bunch of other Plitvice Lakes tours (check available tours here) and is, in my opinion, the best site to find and book tours in Croatia.

There are, of course, a lot of tour options to choose from and you can check the availability, prices, and types of tours to find what’s best suited for your budget. Keep in mind that cheaper tours often do not cover the Plitvice Lakes entrance fee, so keep that in mind when booking.

Price of Visiting Plitvice Lakes

Two lakes at Plitvice National Park descending to waterfalls

The park’s price list is very elaborate. Let’s cover the high season period first. Note that if you visit the park after 4:00 PM (3:00 PM from August 26 to September 30), you’ll get a slight discount.

From June 1 to September 30 the adult ticket costs 250 kunas ($37) if you visit the park before 4:00 PM, and 150 kunas ($22.21) if you visit it after 4:00 PM.

Students get a discount (if they can provide a valid student ID card) so they’ll pay 160/100 kunas ($23.69/$14.80). For children (7-18 years) you’ll have to pay 120/70 kunas ($17.76/$10.36).

In the mid-season (April 1 to May 31 and October 1 to October 31) the adults will have to pay 100 kunas ($14.80), students 75 kunas ($11.10), and children 50 kunas ($7.40).

In the low season (January 1 to March 31 and November 1 to December 31) the price for adults is 60 kunas ($8.88), for students 50 kunas ($7.40), and children 30 kunas ($4.44).

Regardless of the season, children under the age of 7 and people with disabilities have free entrance. All tickets include a boat and a train ride inside the park and insurance.

General Information about Visiting Plitvice Lakes

Aerial view of boardwalk at Plitvice Lakes National Park

If you’re not visiting Plitvice Lakes on a guided tour that already includes an entrance ticket in the price, I strongly advise you to buy/reserve your tickets online at the park’s online shop , and not to rely on buying them at the park’s entrance.

There might be no available tickets, especially in the high season (a frequent occurrence since the park management decided to reduce the number of visitors). You can check the availability of tickets  here .

If you’re buying the ticket online, there are a few things you should pay attention to. You have to purchase them at least 24 hours before your arrival, and you have to choose one of the park’s entrances and the exact time slot of your arrival.

You’ll receive a voucher, which you have to print out and show at the entrance to pick up your ticket. You can pick it up 30 minutes before your reserved time slot, or one hour after it.

Turquoise lake with sign and trees

For instance, you’ll buy a ticket for 10:00 AM. You can pick up your ticket at the entrance between 9:30 AM and 11:00 AM, but you can only enter the park between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM. If you’re late, your ticket is canceled and you won’t get a refund.

Be very careful about picking a time slot, factor in the possible traffic jams, road conditions, etc.

Keep your ticket on your person at all times, since park officials often request visitors to present them.

The park is open 365 days a year, from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, but the working hours change, depending on the season (you can check them here) .

Keep in mind though that you can exchange your vouchers and enter the park two hours before closing time at the latest.

Tips, Additional Information, and What Not to Do in the Park

Long exposure shot of waterfalls and rocks and plants

• There are three official park entrances (EN 1 Rastovača, EN 2 Hladovina and EN 3 Flora). Most people use the first two entrances, since they’re closest to the state road, parking spots, and bus station.

• If you plan to visit the park during the summer, I sure hope you like crowds. You’ll have to arm yourself with patience (a lot of it!) and try not to let it ruin your experience. That’s why I prefer visiting the park in late spring. Nature is waking up from a winter’s sleep, so everything is green and fresh. Early in autumn is also a good option (just think of the beautiful autumn colors of the trees).

View of several waterfalls in Plitvice with autumn foliage on trees and turquoise water

You should be careful if you want to visit the park during the winter. It’s beautiful when everything is snowy and frozen, but some parts of the park will be closed for visitors.

• Be sure to bring firm and comfortable shoes since you’ll do a lot of walking (FYI, flip-flops are not appropriate shoes, learned that the hard way). Bring some food and water too, especially if you’re traveling by public transport. You don’t want to be stuck in the middle of Croatia’s mountains without provisions. For the late spring/summer season, bring sunscreen and a mosquito repellent (trust me, you’ll need it).

• Check the weather forecast before traveling and dress accordingly. Remember that the temperature is always a little lower in the mountain region than in Zagreb. Pack a raincoat, just in case.

• Do not litter. I can’t stress this enough. Nature should be cherished and preserved, so please pick up and throw away any trash.

• Don’t damage the plants. I know some of those flowers are beautiful, but picking them is strictly forbidden. Also, don’t feed the animals and don’t try to touch them. Park rangers take their job very seriously and you could get a fine if they catch you.

• If you want to try out the local cuisine, there are a couple of restaurants in the park. They can be quite expensive in the high season, but you have a lot of other options in the neighborhood. Also, the park allows you to bring in your food and there are a few spots where you can sit down and enjoy your lunch.

• The trails are marked for a reason. If you see an unmarked trail, don’t follow it. It can be dangerous, you could get lost or fall off a cliff. Follow the instructions and stay safe!

Aerial view of people on boardwalk in Plitvice Parks with waterfalls and lakes around them

• The park is pet-friendly, so if you want to bring a dog, you can… just make sure your pet is on the leash the whole time.

• Although Croatia is very safe to travel to, destinations like Plitvice Lakes attract unsavory characters that prey on the tourists (or more precisely, their pockets and wallets). Be careful where you keep your money and pay attention to your surroundings.

• Have fun, enjoy the beautiful nature, yummy food, and experience Croatia!

What to Pack for a Day Trip to Plitvice Lakes

plitvice lakes day trip

If you’re visiting the Plitvice Lakes on a day trip, you’ll likely want to make sure you have these items with you!

Mosquito repellent:  You can bring ones  with DEET  or  without DEET , or I love having some of these  mosquito repellent wipes  that I can keep in my bag in case I suddenly start to get swarmed and don’t have my regular repellent with me.

Sunscreen: You can buy sunscreen in Croatia, but it’s likely cheaper at home or bought  online  in advance. I love this  solid Neutrogena sunscreen . Who doesn’t love a good solid for liquid swap? Great to keep in your bag without worrying about sunscreen explosions

1 rain jacket:  There can be some surprising weather sometimes even in the summer in Croatia, so bring a jacket that can handle rain and a bit of wind. We like this  Columbia rain jacket for men and this Marmot Precip jacket for women . For colder weather, an ultra-light down jacket rolls up and packs easily in your day bag so it’s good to bring along – I have one similar to this .

Comfortable walking shoes: You’ll want to wear at the very least good sneakers for your trip to Plitvice Lakes, and you may be more comfortable with hiking shoes if you’re planning to do several hikes in Croatia on your trip. I recommend these  Ahnu hiking boots for women and these  Keen boots  for men.

A secure backpack: We both carry the  CitySafe backpack by PacSafe not only on our travels but in our day-to-day lives. It’s cute, it’s functional, it’s comfortable, and it’s secure. We’re talking about interlocking zippers (which you can then put through a second clasp for two layers of security), slash-proof wire mesh construction, and RFID blockers to keep your data safe.

It’s neutral enough to be unisex, it’s roomy enough to fit a small laptop, large camera, and tons of odds & ends, and it fits under the plane seat in front of you. We’re obsessed.  Check it out for yourself!

Hike Around The Stunning Waterfalls

For nature lovers and adventurers, there is no better place to explore than a waterfall. Unique waterfalls guarantee spectacular sights that tourists will remember for the duration of their lifetime. Plitvice Park has several waterfalls, but the biggie is called Veliki Slap, and it extends some seventy-eight meters high. Found at the end of the lower lakes, it is truly something to behold. Carve out plenty of time to gaze upon this masterpiece.

  • Waterfalls galore : Plitvice Lakes also offers waterfall views and surrounding hiking trails.

Search For An Abundance Wildlife Living In The Park

Many wild animals roam the twelve thousand acres that comprise Plitvice National Park . If you want to snap some incredible images of deer, wolves, and wild boars, try and visit the park during hours that aren't peak times. The park has also seen an increasing number of brown bears in the area, but these guys aren't huge fans of people, so your chances of running into one are pretty slim.

Trek deep into the wooded area with your camera and stay quiet and still. Even if the animals stay out of sight, there will be plenty of gorgeous formations and natural wonders to capture on film.

  • Plenty of animals : Plitvice Lakes National Park is home to many brown bears, deer, wolves, and boars.

Rent A Rowboat To Experience The Crystal Clear Waters

You can't jump in and swim in any of the sixteen lakes that comprise Plitvice Lakes, but that doesn't mean that you can't experience the clear waters that are found here. Very few places on earth have waters as clear as Plitvice Lakes, and this clearness is created from the mountain runoff that forms the pools. The water calcifies all that it touches, and this stops buildups of mud and algae. The colors are astounding spectrums of teal, greys, deep blues, and greens , and this is thanks to the mineral composition of the area.

If you are drawn to the water, then consider renting a rowboat for fifty km per hour ( that's roughly seven bucks!) Float and row around the pools on a sunny day! These gorgeous pictures of Croatia taken by tourists make it even more worthy of a visit.

  • Get on the water : This National Park also boasts pristine kayaking, rowboating, and swimming.

Picnic In The Midst Of Nature's Bounty

Plitvice Lakes are the perfect backdrop for a picnic. You are welcome to bring your own snacks in; just be sure to deposit trash in the appropriate spaces. Food is also available at the entrance of the park, but the selection here will be limited. The best option is to venture into one of the tiny surrounding towns, purchase a variety of local foods, and have the picnic of your life beside a clear, blue lake or towering waterfall.

  • A place to picnic : Plitvice Lakes National Park offers plenty of room for picnicking for guests.
