The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Tate Modern

Tate modern ultimate guide.

Tate Modern isn’t the be-all-end-all of all the art attractions in London, but it might as well be for you.

From canvases painted white, staircases that lead to nowhere, or even just a bottle of wine placed on top of a chair; love or hate it, this massive art museum will certainly spark a reaction out of anyone who passes through its doors. If you like joining free art tours or discover galleries in any city you go, this might be your place!

Tate Modern’s history can be traced back all the way to 1897 when it was originally designed to be one site (known as the Tate Gallery). In 2000, Tate expanded into four major sites consisting of Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate St. Ives and Tate Liverpool; however, Tate Modern is hands-down the most visited out of the four, and has even been declared as one of the top three tourist attractions in the UK.

tate modern tour

The building which is now Tate Modern was originally the Bankside Power Station which was built after World War II, and was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (who also designed the Battersea Power Station).

Not just limited to artwork, the Tate Modern also has a massive collection of photography, performance, film, and live art exhibits, and in recent years has introduced more pieces with a specific focus on international and female artists. Some of the art galleries even trickle outdoors, so you can wander around all of the different buildings and see more temporary art installations, exhibits and even street performers as well.

See the Tate with LivTours

If you are interested in modern art, you really must visit the Tate. It has a very vast and varied collection which our guide, Mary, explained in great detail. She is an artist herself so her take on the different works and the artists was fascinating. The tour was very thorough and our group was small (5 of us) as advertised. We probably wouldn't have enjoyed the visit as much as we did had we not booked this tour.

Tate Modern tour

We met our guide, Mary and the other 3 people in our group at the designated place, precisely in time. The tour was well paced and Mary was an excellent guide, being an art historian and praticing artist herself. She was very passionate about many of the works and was very good at pointing out details to us and giving us insight into the lives of the artists. The museum has a really great collection and is certainly worthy of a visit. If you do go, book the tour with this tour company.

Two fantastic museum tours

We were told that the British and the Tate were two museums really worth seeing during our trip to London. We booked small group tours through LivTours to see each one and we were so glad we did. We got so much more out of the experiences and will remember what we saw and the things we learned thanks to our two expert guides. After these two experiences we definitely rate this company and their tours with 5 + stars.

Highly recommend

After alot of research, we chose this tour for our visit to the Tate museum. It was a little more expensive than the others but guaranteed small group and expert guide. We got that AND MORE! It was worth every cent and can assure you that it's the greatest way to see this museum. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would.

Excellent guided visit to the Tate

If you are interested in seeing some of the most famous masterpieces of modern art then you will undoubtably plan to visit the Tate Modern in London. Take my word: DO IT WITH LIVTOUR! You'll get so much more out of the visit and will come away with a much great understanding of the artwork and the artists' lives. If you can, request Mary as your guide. Art historian, artist herself, just a really awesome person! This was definitely a highlight of our time in London.

As one of the largest contemporary and modern art museums in Europe, Tate Modern is a must-visit for any art lover when you come to London.

I’ve lived in London for over 10 years and have been to the Tate Modern so many times that I’ve lost track – whether I’m going to see the galleries, enjoy the café, or even just get some work done in the comfy chairs I find in the nooks and crannies of the museum, I always enjoy myself!

tate modern tour

In this Tate Modern review, we’ll go over who should go, my top tips for visiting, and what to expect when you visit Tate Modern.

Who should go to Tate Modern?

tate modern tour

Tate Modern is the perfect London museum for:

  • adults who want to make the most of London and see as much as possible (even if you don’t necessarily consider yourself a modern art ‘person’)

Tate Modern isn’t great for you if you are decidedly against “modern art” or feel like you don’t understand or appreciate contemporary art and have no plans of trying to do so (in that case – try Tate Britain !)

tate modern tour

It’s also not great for kids – there are some cool galleries that elementary aged and above could enjoy for a little bit, but definitely the younger they are, the less there is to do at this London museum for them and some things are adult in theme.

tate modern tour

There is the “Tate Draw” area with digital sketch pads that the kids like, if you want to visit Tate Modern and do have kids, but this isn’t something I’d recommend adding to your list if you’re specifically looking for things that the little ones will enjoy in London.

Tate Modern Galleries

Tate Modern has a number of modern galleries to look at that are completely free to enter and permanent exhibitions (compared to the visiting or temporary exhibitions we’ll discuss next).

tate modern tour

They range from, well, everything you can think of – sculpture, photography, interactive displays, video, paintings, drawings.

tate modern tour

Some are based around particular artists, some around theme, some around color.

tate modern tour

To give you an idea for what you might see as you wander your way around, enjoy this photo dump of some of my favorite areas and displays!

tate modern tour

Temporary Exhibitions

tate modern tour

In addition to the permanent galleries, there are constant temporary exhibitions at Tate Modern that you can enjoy, ranging from specific displays from one or two artists to themed exhibitions.

tate modern tour

These are not free, unlike the permanent galleries, and you can book tickets online in advance (which is recommended as they often sell out).

tate modern tour

Check out this page here to see the current exhibitions – this is definitely a must-do for art lovers in particular. If you just want to see the museum and look at art, but don’t have a strong interest in it, you’ll be just fine viewing the expansive permanent galleries.

Tips for Visiting

Entrance to Tate Modern is free , though there is a donation box when you first walk in, suggesting a £5 donation (this is completely optional – most people don’t).

tate modern tour

There is an area for families to play near the lockers , if you’ve brought some toddlers who need to climb on various things (and not the museum exhibits!)

tate modern tour

There are also handy dandy maps spread throughout the museum, giving you directions and letting you know what is on which level, as well as maps you can purchase for a small fee.

tate modern tour

Tate Modern Places to Eat

There are three main areas that anyone (including non-members) can eat at the Tate.

The first and most casual is the Natalie Bell Building Espresso Bar – this cute little coffee shop area has mostly drinks, with a few snacks available, and is great for a quick stop-off if you don’t want something more seated or formal.

tate modern tour

Then there’s the Corner – a late-night cafe and bar area (open all day, but also until late) that is more upscale and has a food menu. This is a great place to go with friends.

tate modern tour

Finally, the Restaurant – it’s got sweeping views over London and is a real restaurant with sit-down service. A great place for a date in London!

Tate Modern Gift Shop

The gift shop in the Tate Modern is perhaps one of the best places to shop for art lovers in London. It’s huge – featuring everything from books to prints to shirts to toys.

tate modern tour

Views from Tate Modern

Tate Modern is well-known for its views across London. While Level 10 has the best views, it is currently closed.

The next best place to enjoy views of London from Tate Modern is from either the Restaurant or from a viewing platform outside of the Natalie Bell Espresso Bar.

tate modern tour

Opening Hours

tate modern tour

Tate Modern is open every day between 10am and 6pm, but there are a few days it’s closed over Christmas.

It’s one of the best free things to do in London with consistent opening hours.

There are also Tate Modern Lates with DJs, special events, and late night opening hours (held occasionally).

How to Get to Tate Modern

tate modern tour

The easiest way to get to Tate Modern if you’re within central London is by tube or bus .

The closest tube station is Southwark Station, and there are regular buses that run right past the area.

tate modern tour

You can also get to it by river boat, but most people will be coming via land so this is only a viable option if you’re a visitor who is already looking at using the Thames Clippers boats (get off at Bankside Pier).

Tate Modern Guide

TripSavvy / Gautier Houba

The Tate Modern was the U.K.'s most-visited attraction in 2018, drawing 1.4 million people to its galleries in one year alone. The vast museum, which is centrally located on Southbank in London, welcomes visitors of all ages and backgrounds, even those who aren't that into modern art. Because the museum is free (and features one of the city's best outdoor viewing decks), it's worth an inclusion in any London itinerary.

History and Background

The Tate Modern, part of the Tate group of British art museums, is located on London's Southbank, overlooking the Thames. The original part of the museum, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is housed in the former Bankside Power Station and first opened to the public in May of 2000. The museum was expanded with a ten-story addition, known as the Switch House or the Blavatnik Building, opened in June 2016, offering additional galleries, dining spaces, gift shops and members-only areas. Over 40 million people have visited the museum since it opened in 2000.

The Tate Modern collects and displays modern and contemporary from 1900 until present day. The museum boasts a vast permanent collection and features numerous rotating temporary exhibitions throughout the year, including exhibitions in its expansive Turbine Hall, which often houses interactive displays by contemporary artists. The museum also features special events, including film screenings, curator talks and lectures.

What to See and Do

Following the extension in 2016, there's a lot to see in The Tate Modern and it's best to approach the museum depending on your preferences. Check the website for current special exhibitions, which typically require a timed ticket booked in advance, but the permanent collection, housed over several floors, is also worth exploring (and it's free). Many famous artworks hang in the galleries, from Roy Lichtenstein's "Whaam!" to Pablo Picasso's "The Three Dancers," and the rooms are laid out by period and theme. In the Blavatnik Building, the rotating "ARTIST ROOMS" gallery displays the works of one contemporary artist for several months (past artists have included Jenny Holzer, Bruce Nauman, and Joseph Beuys).

Those who aren't as interested in art can still enjoy the Tate Modern, particularly the 360-degree public viewing deck on the10th floor of the Blavatnik Building, which boasts amazing views of the Thames and London. The museum also has several cafes and restaurants, including fine dining eatery Level 9 Restaurant and the more casual Kitchen and Bar Restaurant. Level 9 Restaurant serves dishes inspired by the artists and works in the Tate, which makes for a memorable dining experience for art lovers.

How to Visit

The Tate Modern is located between Wateroo and London Bridge stations along the south bank of the Thames. There are several nearby Tube stations, including Waterloo, Southark, London Bridge and Bank, and visitors can also opt to take the Thames Clipper boat to Bankside Pier. The Tate-To-Tate Clipper runs between the Tate Britain at Millbank and the Tate Modern every 30 minutes. There is no parking near the Tate Modern, so it's best to arrive via public transportation or taxi. If you want to walk, the museum is connected to the north bank of the Thames, where you'll find St. Paul's Cathedral, by the pedestrian-only Millennium Bridge.

Admission to the Tate Modern (and all other Tate museums) is free for visitors. Special exhibitions and events will require a separate paid ticket and it's always recommended to book in advance online, especially for popular exhibits. Tate members can access all exhibits for free with a membership card.

The museum is open every day of the year, except for December 24–26. Look for "Tate Lates" events on the last Friday of the month, where the museum stays open past its regular hours with talks, music and workshops, as well as pop-up bars and food stands.

Tips for Visiting

Leave large bags and luggage at home or in your the hotel when visiting the Tate Modern. The museum, which operates a search policy on all bags when entering the building, doesn't allow large bags, wheeled suitcases or boxes inside the museum. If you don't have a choice but to bring along your luggage, store big items at the left luggage facility in nearby Waterloo station.

The Tate Modern is accessible to visitors with disabilities and all entrances are accessible for those in a wheelchair or scooter (or with a stroller). The museum also has wheelchairs available to borrow for free. Visitors with a disability can also receive concessionary admission to special exhibitions.

Free activities are available for families every day and the museum regularly offers events for young visitors, which are often held on holidays. Check the Tate Modern website for upcoming kid-friendly events and workshops.

While it might not make sense for every visitor to purchase a Tate membership, finding a friend in London with a membership card can be a great way to experience the museum. Not only are exhibits free to members, but there are two members-only rooms in the museum, one in each building. The members room in the original side of the museum has an outdoor patio overlooking the Thames that is the perfect place for a cup of tea during a visit to the Tate Modern.

When you are finished exploring the Tate Modern, head a few blocks east to Borough Market for lunch or a snack. The outdoor market is a good pick over one of the tourist-filled chain restaurants along Southbank.

History of the Building

An iconic part of the London skyline, the Tate Modern collection is actually housed in an old power station. Bankside Power Station was designed by architect Giles Gilbert Scott and built between 1947 and 1963. When the power station closed in 1981, it sat abandoned on the Thames until the Tate collection moved in and was opened to the public in 2000.

Nowadays the most recognisable part of the building is the chimney. Rising 325ft into the air, the chimney is made almost entirely of brick and stands directly opposite St Paul's Cathedral on the other side of the river.

Of particular note is the old turbine hall. Once housing electricity generators, the turbine hall at the Tate is over five storeys tall and boasts 3,400 square metres of floor space. It is here that large specially-commissioned art pieces are displayed, with the works and artists changing regularly.

The Galleries

The Tate Modern has 7 floors that hold galleries on the first 4. Galleries and displays are not chronological but arranged by themes. As of today there are four exhibition galleries as follows:

  •   Poetry And Dream  - Works of surrealism.
  •   Structure and Clarity  - Space dedicated to abstract art.
  •   Transformed Visions  - Abstract Impressionism after WWII.
  •   Energy and Process  - Holds Arte Povera
  •   Setting the Scene  - Located between wings, works of art here all have theatrical of literary themes.

Notable Turbine Hall Installations

The works put together and displayed in the Turbine Hall tend to be the most-visited and most talked-about exhibits that the Tate displays. Ever-changing, the works to be viewed here are often times larger-than-life as the Turbine Hall holds one of the largest single-room exhibition spaces in the entire country.

Some of the most well-known or memorable pieces to be shown in the Turbine Hall are listed here -

'Shibboleth' by Doris Salcedo  - A 548ft long crack in the floor of the turbine hall. During the first month of the display, 15 people were injured along the crack, but all injuries were minor.

'Test Site' by Carsten Holler  - A series of metallic slides available to the public to use. Five slides in total, running from the second floor down.

'The weather project' by Olafur Eliasson  - A dramatic visitor experience with a fine mist circulating I. The hall as well as hundreds of lamps casting yellow light. A gigantic mirror on the ceiling allowed visitors to see their shrouded shadows against the backdrop of the yellow light.

'For The Love of God' by Damien Hirst  - Although displayed in the turbine hall, this piece is different from the other larger pieces traditionally displayed there. A platinum cast of a real human skull encrusted with over 8,000 flawless diamonds.

Take a Virtual Tour of Tate Modern’s Andy Warhol Exhibition

The show ran for just five days before the London museum closed due to COVID-19

Theresa Machemer

Correspondent

Gallery assistant at Tate Modern

Five days after the opening of its much-anticipated Andy Warhol retrospective, Tate Modern closed its doors indefinitely in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

But museumgoers don’t have to wait for Tate to reopen to appreciate the exhibition. On April 6, the London institution released a collection of online resources related to the show. From a seven-minute video tour led by two Tate curators to a lengthy exhibition guide and a podcast titled “ The Art of Persona ,” art lovers can now fully explore the aptly titled “ Andy Warhol ” from home.

“Curating an Andy Warhol exhibition in the present-day means confronting a world where everyone has a mental projection of the artist and his production,” curators Gregor Muir and Fiontán Moran tell the Guardian ’s Tim Jonze. “Everyone owns Warhol. He is one of those rare artists who transcends the art world, having become widely known as one of America’s most famous artists, if not one of America’s most famous Americans. Over time, Warhol became—and still is—a big brand, which is just how he wanted it.”

The exhibition seeks to look beyond the persona of eccentricity that Warhol built for himself. Immigration forms featured in the show’s first gallery, for instance, document the Pop Art legend’s parents’ arrival in the United States. Andrej and Julia Warhola moved to Pittsburgh from Miková, a village in what is now Slovakia, during the early 1920s; the couple raised their children in the Ruthenian Catholic tradition, introducing an influence that shaped Warhol’s art throughout his career.

YouTube Logo

As Muir explains in the new video, the exhibition approaches Warhol through the lenses of his immigrant background and queer identity, as well as the themes of death and religion evident in his oeuvre.

“He was an artist who really, despite all of his insecurities, tried to be himself,” says Moran in the video. “And part of that was his gay identity and very often a lot of his works explore same-sex desire. And you see that in a number of the early drawings that he does in the ’50s, which often depict men he knew or men he desired.”

The second gallery in “Andy Warhol” centers on one of the art icon’s early works, a 1963 film comprised of close-up shots of sleeping poet—and, briefly, Warhol’s lover—John Giorno. According to Tate’s exhibition guide , Giorno later said that his lover circumvented the homophobia of the art world “by making the movie Sleep into an abstract painting: the body of a man as a field of light and shadow.”

During the 1960s, Warhol began creating brightly colored artworks with stark black outlines screen-printed on top—a style that came to be known as Pop Art. Today, soup cans, Coca-Cola bottles and celebrities painted in multiples of two, four or more are among the artist’s most well-known works.

“Most of these works were produced in the early part of the 1960s at the artist’s first home on Lexington Avenue,” the curators tell the Guardian , “not the Silver Factory, as people imagine.”

Warhol established the factory—his art studio and social hub—in 1963. Covered in silver paint and foil, the site won fame as the place where the artist and his assistants produced a significant number of paintings and films.

“With a lot of Warhol’s work, you don’t know how involved he actually was, because he had his assistants and the whole idea of the Factory was that there was no single hand,” Hirshhorn Museum curator Evelyn C. Hankins told Smithsonian magazine ’s Megan Gambino in 2012.

Andy Warhol

This situation changed in 1968, when writer Valerie Solanas shot Warhol after accusing him of stealing her manuscript. The wound nearly killed the artist, and in doing so, led to the demise of the factory’s open-door policy. Warhol’s mental and physical health suffered for the rest of his life.

“Despite the trauma of the event, he agreed to pose for photographer Richard Avedon and once compared the stitches of his chest to a Yves Saint Laurent dress,” writes Tate in the exhibition guide .

During the ’70s, Warhol began painting portraits commissioned by wealthy clients, in addition to series such as Mao , Hamer and Sickle , and Skull . He also funded Interview magazine, a publication still active today.

One of Warhol’s series from the decade, titled Ladies and Gentlemen , features portraits of African American and Latinx drag queens and transgender women. Little was known about the subjects of the paintings when they were first created, but research highlighted in the exhibition is now revealing their stories.

The last artwork in Tate’s retrospectiv is Sixty Last Suppers , a large-scale work based on a cheap reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper . A copy of the mural hung in the kitchen of Warhol’s childhood home.

Sixty Last Suppers was one of the last pieces Warhol created. In 1987, the 58-year-old artist died of cardiac arrest after undergoing gallbladder surgery.

“He could have gotten [the surgery] scheduled and done earlier, had he been more preventative about his health,” Jose Diaz, a curator at the Andy Warhol Museum, told History.com ’s Sarah Pruitt in 2018. “But until the end, he avoided hospitals. He was always nervous about getting sick. I think death always made him nervous, but of course, having almost died once really escalated that.”

When Will Kate Middleton Return to Royal Life?

By Elise Taylor

Image may contain Clothing Formal Wear Suit Blazer Coat Jacket Adult Person Face Head Photography and Portrait

The last time the world saw Kate Middleton? On December 25, 2023, when she attended Christmas Day church service with her family. Weeks later, there was a surprise—and unsettling—announcement from Kensington Palace: the Princess of Wales had undergone abdominal surgery.

We now know why: she confirmed in an emotional video in late March that she was grappling with the early stages of a cancer diagnosis. As a result, she would be taking time away from public life. “We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space, and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now, I must focus on making a full recovery,” she said.

In the weeks that followed, Prince William told reporters that his wife was “doing well” during an appearance in mid-May. Later that month, People reported the princess had been spotted out and about with her family, as well as running solo errands. This coincided with an article in Vanity Fair about her wellbeing: “It has been a great relief that she is tolerating the medication and is actually doing a lot better,” a family friend told the outlet. “It has, of course, been a very challenging and worrying time. Everyone has rallied around her—William, her parents, and her sister and brother.”

But while it seems that the princess is thankfully recovering, the Palace has not set a firm date for her return to royal duties, only confirming that she will not attend the dress rehearsal for Trooping the Colour on June 8. (Traditionally, she serves as an inspecting officer.) They have not yet commented on whether she will attend Trooping the Colour on June 15, but it’s said she will only step back into the spotlight when her medical team gives the all-clear.

Rumors are already swirling about when that might be, with some tabloids saying the fall.

She also may not be the only royal family member out of the spotlight for a time : due to the coming UK election on July 4, Prince William and Prince Charles have canceled official engagements so as to not distract the public from the political process.

So for now, it seems that we will all have to wait for the queen-in-waiting.
