Nigeria is blessed with inestimable tourism potentials that need functioning modern regulations to preserve them against unnecessary encroachment and destruction. The stimulation of this study was derived from the failure to achieve the objectives of the National Tourism Policy in Nigeria. In 1990, the National Tourism Policy was formulated in Nigeria to strategise how tourism and tourism-related sectors can be enhanced, developed, promoted, and sustained without compromising the activities of other disciplines. It is now apparent that despite this policy, the industry is yet to accomplish its objectives in achieving sustainable tourism development across the main areas in Nigeria. This paper highlighted the objectives and the pivotal areas of the policy, examined the basic issues affecting the National Tourism Policy and recommended the way forward. This paper is based on empiricism in which related kinds of literature were gathered through secondary sources. The findings showed that the major issues affecting sustainable tourism development in Nigeria are low or lack of stakeholders' involvement in the formulation, planning, implementation, funding, monitoring, and evaluation of tourism policy.

Some key areas were noted for re-appraisal, such as provision of infrastructure, transportation and communication, socio-cultural factor, marketing and promotion, safari and eco Tourism, private sector participation and security. Over the years, governments all around the world have adopted the use of tourism as a source of economic diversification. This has in many ways helped them build an economic linkage with other sectors, creating employment and providing opportunities. Advanced nations like the USA have gained a lot as its tourism industry contributed approximately $2.9 Trillion to their GDP in the year 2019. Nigeria is no stranger to the topic of diversification as several administrations have come and gone with a promise of the need to diversify. The Nigerian challenge of tourism is not the absence of tourist locations or captivating cultures, it is rather a case of poor infrastructure, insecurity, inadequate funding, corruption and the lack of implementation amongst other vices. It is a known fact that Nigeria is hopelessly dependent on crude oil, hence this article explores the opportunities that tourism presents to the country as well as recommendations on how to attain a state of sustainable tourism revenue generation.

The South Eastern part of Nigeria was a single state of the twelve states of Nigeria before 1976 – East Central State. Presently, the area is made up of five states. This Paper presents a study carried out to assess the possibility of knitting the once-one-state and presently five states, together to form a tourist destination worthy of international importance. Although the unprecedented dearth of infrastructural development in the zone continues to be a subject of discussion, little attention has been given to investigate the place of synergized intervention. Descriptive analysis was employed, in which the tourism potentials in the zone that are of national recognition were itemized. Data were collected on available amenities, resident population and accessibility of such potentials. Existing literature on various Environmental Management Systems were explored to elicit a system that is capable of affording a sustainable environment for tourism matters in the zone. The study revealed that the zone exhibits similar socio-economic and physical characteristics that are replete with potentials for improvement for optimum tourism utility in the entire zone. Several measures were advanced in the study to achieve this, chief of which is the adoption of the Environmental Planning and Management (EPM) process.

The tourism industry in Nigeria plays a significant role in the country's socioeconomic development. Some tourist destinations in Nigeria, it could be said, lack the basic care needed to thrive and encourage socioeconomic growth. However, increasing and promoting the tourist potential for attraction and patronization are suggested strategies to realize the crucial responsibilities of tourism. This article explores the possibilities of AKWUKE SAND BEACH AND ADADA RIVER for the socioeconomic development of the host communities, the state, and the country in general in order to ensure sustainable tourism growth. The paper goes on to discuss the notion of tourism as well as the advantages of tourist potential for host communities, states, and the country as a whole. The potential problems and future prospects were also discussed. As a primary source of data collection, observation and interviews were used to obtain information from the communities, and online journals and books were also consulted as a secondary source of data collection. The findings show that the socioeconomic impact on the communities is less than anticipated. The conclusion reached was that long-term tourism development is visible and feasible if the government can devote a little more attention to it.

It is stale news that Nigeria's tourism industry is grossly underdeveloped , no thanks to successive governments economic misadventure. Worse still, the present government's much touted economic diversification drive tilts more towards solid minerals exploration than agriculture, tourism and services sector developments. Notwithstanding, tourism is an international business, hence one may not be surprised at our governments lack of entrepreneurial capacity and limited actionable knowledge of how to strategically midwife the economic development of tourism in Nigeria. Over the years, the Nigeria tourism industry has been bedevilled by plethora of problems, both simple and complex. But these problems are not without solutions. Hence, this piece seeks to bring to light some of the prevailing challenges in the industry and proffer solutions to the malaise. After all said and done, Nigeria's tourism development would only be transformed by visionary and transformational leadership. Political leadership that makes tourism a central part
