Welcome meeting, hike to Sermermiut and welcome dinner

Early in the morning, fly directly from Keflavík International Airport to Ilulissat. You are picked up at the airport, and we will drive you to the Hotel Arctic in Ilulissat.

The flight is in itself quite an adventure as you cruise at low altitude over the Inland Ice Cap as you prepare for landing in Ilulissat.

After arrival, a guide from our local excursion office will welcome you and inform you about the different excursions available but also about experiences you can make on your own during your stay in Ilulissat.

Hike to the Ice Fjord and the abandoned Sermermiut settlement

Beautiful icebergs provide the setting for the old settlement of Sermermiut, 1.5 kilometers south of Ilulissat. For 4,000 years, different Inuit cultures lived in the settlement and, today, you can still see the remains, which indicate their former presence.

Hear the story about the life of the Inuit people and their traditions before the Europeans came to Greenland. See the ruins and touch the permafrost with your own hands. Visitors often ask if they can walk these treks themselves? The answer is yes. But it is our experience that most people prefer having a guide with them the first time they hike in Greenlandic nature.

Furthermore, historic places will be pointed out on the way, and these can be difficult to find on your own.  You will have a coffee or tea break at “Kællingekløften” with a beautiful view of the Ice Fjord before you head back.

Welcome dinner at the Arctic Hotel.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel Arctic  (B, D)

You have the whole day to explore Illulissat. The midnight sun makes the days very long, and you will feel full of energy to explore and take advantage of the entire day.

The sunny nights can only be experienced north of the Arctic Circle where the sun during summer never sets behind the horizon. In Ilulissat, the midnight sun is present from May 22 to July 24, but also throughout August, there will be very bright nights.

Sailing among the icebergs.

Almost every visitor in Ilulissat chooses to try this boat trip among the icebergs at least once. Every day, more than 40 million tonnes of ice flow out into the fjord. The floating icebergs are gigantic, sometimes wider than 100 meters and with a height up to 100 meters above the water surface as well.

These giants pile up at the end of the fjord, providing you with a great opportunity to sail among them. You should not miss out on this exceptional experience when visiting Ilulissat. The icebergs are a wonderful sight in every kind of weather; in the sunshine, the contrasts are very clear, whereas the blue shades are strikingly beautiful when it is cloudy, and the midnight sun casts a unique glow on the icebergs during the night.

Taking the boat trip on a bright night is an extraordinary experience. Remember to bring warm clothes – otherwise, sealskin clothing is available for rent.

Overnight in Hotel Arctic (B)

Only a few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi Glacier, which runs into the fjord 80 kilometers north of Ilulissat. It is possible to get very close to the glacier by boat and experience huge pieces of ice breaking off. The sounds are thunderous, and the sight of chunks of ice crashing into the water is astonishing.

We sail in modern, comfortable boats during the excursion to Eqi Glacier. The route takes us north along the coast, passing Bredebugt, the settlement of Oqaatsut and the big fjord system called Pakitsoq, where whales and seals are often spotted.

Lunchtime and watch the ice calve

Further along the route, we pass through the Ataa Strait, which is surrounded by steep mountains with bird life and waterfalls. Our boats, which are reinforced for sailing in icy waters, will remain in front of the glacier for approximately 2 hours and wait for the ice to calve. Meanwhile, a delicious lunch will be served. This is an all-day excursion where you will have a good opportunity to immerse yourself in the experience and fully enjoy the boat trip through the ice-filled waters.

Remember to bring warm clothes – otherwise, sealskin clothing is available for rent.

Farewell dinner at Hotel Arctic.

Overnight in Hotel Arctic (B, D)

Departure from Ilulissat at 10:05 AM and arrival at Keflavík International Airport 3:25 PM. Airport transfers are included, both in Greenland and Iceland.

Whale Safari - $190 per person

It is a great experience to get close to large animals like whales. There are 15 species of whale in Greenland. During the summer it is normally the humpback, the common minke whale and the fin whale, we see. The whales swim the entire Disko Bay during the summer; sometimes close to the town, sometimes in the ice fjord or up north by the island, Arveprinsens Ejland.

We are in constant radio contact with the fishermen and the hunters about the whales and their whereabouts. The humpback, with its characteristic fin, is the one we see most often.

Later, it is time to get ready for the next optional excursion. The midnight sun makes the days very long, and you will feel full of energy to explore and take advantage of the entire day.

Trips to Greenland are always subject to weather, fog and ice conditions. Therefore the sequence of the day tours and excursions in Greenland is subject to change or if needed an alternative excursion will be operated if available. Delays and flight cancellations between Iceland and Greenland can happen. Therefore we strongly recommend you to buy travel insurance in the country of residence that would cover any additional travel expenses, should your flights be delayed or cancelled due to weather. We recommend not to book any international flight directly after a trip from Greenland; ideally staying minimum two nights in Iceland after the Greenland trip to avoid the risk of missing an international flight.

What people love about greenland tours.

This is an amazing tour, exploring the world largest island. I am the oldest in the group of young dudes from different parts of the globe. Being an old bloke in the group it’s not easy. Traversing and maneuvering the parched land of Greenland and trekking the icecap…whoa! that’s incredible to feat. Our tour expert Eva is amazing, she walks and talks with full of energy. She knows the area well enough that she could explain with gusto. If you’re looking for comfort tour, this is not for you. Transportation…majority by foot and speed boat. The group of ten bonded together. We’d amazing swaddled moments together. Sleeping in a tent in the middle of nowhere, very very cold, making pee in the middle of the night walking few hundred feet groping in the dark if no flashlight…that was fun, good luck if you trip. Eating our lunch anyplace, anywhere but place good enough to rest and eat. The only issue I’d was buying a few minutes of WiFi to use that didn’t work, waste of money. I want to write more but it’ll be a book….Anyway, thanks to the Tasermiut Tour team but Eva takes the lion’s share.
it was absolutely amazing!!! Trip of a lifetime

GJ Travel

"I need to clarify that my tour guide Alma was great and she was very sweet and helpful. My issues have to do with GJ Travel and the fact that they did not provide me with all the excursions they posted in their itinerary, but they still charged me for the full price of the tour. The itinerary posted had daily excursions for the entire 4 days that I'm in Ilulissat, but my final itinerary had one free day. I was informed ahead of time by the company that the full day excursion to Eqi Glacier do not run at the end of September, and that they would replace the cruise with other activities. They never provided me with alternative activities. I found out that the cruise to the glacier was still operating and the only reason why it was not included in my tour is because Alma was leaving Ilulissat to fly home on the day in question. Alma offered to book the cruise independently for me but it would mean I had to pay for the cruise out of my own pocket when it should have been included in the tour price. GJ Travel should have been honest with me about the whole situation about Alma leaving before my tour was scheduled to end. At the very least, they should have given me a discount and I could pay for the cruise myself separately.

Iceland and Greenland - What's the Difference Between the Countries?

Iceland and Greenland - What's the Difference Between the Countries?

The Settlement of Iceland and Greenland

What happened to the norse settlement in greenland, the names of iceland and greenland, why is iceland called iceland, why is greenland called greenland, iceland, greenland, and denmark, iceland vs. greenland - comparing the two countries, language and population - iceland vs. greenland, political status - iceland vs. greenland, weather & climate - iceland vs. greenland, nature & wildlife - iceland vs. greenland, iceland vs. greenland - which country to visit, costs and accessibility - iceland vs. greenland, natural wonders - iceland vs. greenland.

Iceland vs Greenland - The black sand beaches of Iceland and the white icecaps of Greenland

Located in the North Atlantic, Iceland and Greenland are neighboring countries that often draw attention on the world map due to their somewhat similar sounding names. At a glance, these names might seem a bit strange, suggesting landscapes opposite to their realities. The truth, however, is rooted in an interesting bit of shared history.

Iceland, situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge , is famous for its geothermal activity and volcanic landscapes. Booking a hotel in Iceland  and exploring the country's wondrous landscapes on some of the many nature tours available is an unbelievable experience.

The northern lights in Greenland

The northern lights in Greenland.

Greenland, primarily covered by an expansive ice sheet, holds the distinction of being the world's largest island. With colossal icebergs and a rich Inuit heritage, Greenland is a harsh but beautiful Arctic wonderland.

But what are the similarities and differences between the two countries?  Renting a car in Iceland  and driving the Ring Road is a great way to explore everything the country has to offer, but why is the same not possible in Greenland? Do the inhabitants of Iceland and Greenland have a shared ancestry or intertwined histories?

The northern lights dancing in the sky above Greenland.

The northern lights in Iceland.

In this article, we'll explore the nature, culture, and history of Iceland and Greenland. We'll go into the things they have in common and the things that separate them, as well as the reasoning behind the names of the countries that still manage to confuse some. Whether you're thinking about exploring Iceland on a fascinating self-drive tour or visiting the ruins of the vanished Norse settlement in Greenland, here's everything you need to know before visiting.

If you're visiting Iceland, you can book a full vacation with a short stop at Greenland included, such as this spectacular 8-day summer vacation in Iceland with a guided day tour to Greenland . There are many more  amazing Iceland and Greenland vacation packages  to explore that will allow you to visit both countries in one trip if you just can't choose between them, so let's dig in!

Ingolfur settles in Iceland. An 1850 painting by Danish artist Johan Peter Raadsig.

Ingolfur Arnarson settling in Reykjavik.

The settlement histories of Iceland and Greenland are intertwined. While Greenland had previously been inhabited by the Inuit people, both Iceland and Greenland were unknown to mainland Europeans for a long time. Classical and medieval manuscripts spoke of a mystical island far in the north called Thule, but it wasn't until the late 9th century that Iceland was first discovered by Norse explorers.

One of the first men to discover Iceland was Floki Vilgerdarson, often called "Raven Floki," as he employed the use of ravens to aid him in the search for the island. Floki experienced a harsh winter in Iceland which made him decide against settling there, but before leaving, he did have the honor of naming it Iceland after observing ice drifting in the fjords.

The Norwegian-born explorer Ingolfur Arnarson is most often credited as Iceland's first permanent settler. In 874 AD, he made his home in the place now known as Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

A reconstructed turfhouse in Eiriksstadir, the likely site of Erik the Red's upbringing in Iceland.

A replica of the Erik's homestead in Iceland.

Many of the people who would settle in Iceland in the next century hailed from Norway, one of which was Erik the Red. His father, Thorvald Asvaldsson, was exiled from Norway after violent disputes, and as a result, the family moved to Iceland. As Erik grew up, he followed in his father's violent footsteps and also became involved in some bloody disputes, which led to his exile from Iceland circa 982 AD. Eiriksstadir , the likely site of Erik's homestead, today features a replica of a Viking longhouse.

During his exile, Erik sailed westward to a land that was known but unexplored by Norsemen. He spent three years surveying this land and gave it the name Greenland. This may seem odd, as Greenland is largely covered with ice, but there are areas of green along the island's coasts, including the area where Erik settled down.

After his period of exile ended, Erik returned to Iceland around 985 or 986 AD. He brought tales of "Greenland" and encouraged people to join him in settling the new land. Many were convinced, and they embarked on a journey to Greenland with Erik leading them. One of the people who accompanied Erik to Greenland was his son, Leif Erikson, who would later become the first European to set foot on continental North America.

The ruins of the Catholic Hvalsey Church are the best preserved Norse ruins in Greenland.

The Norse settlement established by Erik the Red remained in Greenland for a few centuries before vanishing in the 15th century. The reasons behind the decline and eventual disappearance of the colony remain a mystery to this day, but several factors have likely contributed.

The Norse established their settlement in Greenland during what is called the Medieval Warm Period (circa 950-1250 AD), a time when temperatures were relatively mild. At this time, Greenland's climate supported agriculture and livestock farming. Around the mid-14th century, however, the climate began to cool during the Little Ice Age. This change led to shorter growing seasons and harsher winters, which would have made farming and livestock management increasingly challenging.

Some experts believe the Norse people abandoned the settlement, while others believe they simply perished. Another theory suggests that the population was abducted by raiders. No matter the cause, it is unlikely that a single factor was responsible for the disappearance of the settlement.

The current Greenlandic population is descended from the Thule people, an Inuit culture that migrated from what is now known as Alaska around 1000 AD, reaching Greenland around 1300 AD. The Thule were highly adaptable to the Arctic environment, with technological innovations such as dog sleds, toggling harpoons, and kayaks for hunting and whaling.

While the Thule did move into Greenland after the Norse had established settlements, there was limited evidence of significant direct contact between the two groups. It's believed that any interactions would have been primarily in the form of trade.

Ever heard the phrase "Iceland is green and Greenland is ice?" A common myth surrounding the naming of Greenland and Iceland is that the Vikings gave Iceland its name to keep people from wanting to settle there and gave Greenland its name to lure people there instead. The legend says that the names should, in fact, have been reversed, as Iceland is greener than Greenland, and Greenland has more ice than Iceland. While it's a cute little conspiracy theory, the truth is simpler.

Before Iceland got its name, Gardar Svavarsson, an explorer who stopped there briefly but didn't settle down, gave it the name Gardarsholmi (Gardar's Island). Thankfully, the name didn't stick. When Raven-Floki gave Iceland its current name, he was disgruntled after a rough winter on the new island he had found. He gave Iceland its name due to drifting ice drifting in the fjords, which

The site where Erik the Red settled down was likely green at the time, as Greenland's coasts are in the summer. There might, however, be some truth in that he gave it such an inviting name in order to lure more settlers in.

The modern inhabitants of Greenland do not refer to the country by that name, but they rather call it "Kalaallit Nunaat," which in the Greenlandic language (Kalaallisut) means "Land of the Kalaallit." Kalaallit is the term for the Greenlandic Inuit, the indigenous people of Greenland.

Summer in the Greenland coast circa year 1000. An 1875 painting by Danish artist Carl Rasmussen.

By the mid-13th century, internal strife and external pressures weakened Iceland's independent commonwealth system. The last quarter of the 13th century saw the signing of the Old Covenant in 1262-1264, which brought Iceland under the Norwegian crown. This was partly in exchange for benefits such as protection and trade rights. The Norse settlement in Greenland, likewise, also became a part of the Kingdom of Norway in the 13th century.

In 1397, the kingdoms of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden all unified under a single monarch. Though the union had periods of disruption, Iceland and Greenland, territories originally associated with Norway, came under this joint crown and became a part of Denmark. When the union would later dissolve, Iceland and Greenland remained Danish territories.

A good overlook of Reykjavik's downtown area.

Reykjavik, Iceland.

In the 19th century, Icelandic nationalism was on the rise, with increasing demands for self-governance. In 1874, Denmark granted Iceland a constitution, and in 1904, Iceland acquired its first minister resident in Iceland. Iceland became a sovereign state in 1918 under a common monarch with Denmark and would later become fully independent in 1944.

Greenland, conversely, remains a Danish territory to this day. In the 20th century, especially after World War II, there was increased emphasis on modernizing Greenland and integrating it more closely with Denmark. In 1979, Greenland was granted Home Rule, giving it control over most internal matters while defense and foreign policy remained under Danish jurisdiction. In 2009, this arrangement was expanded with the Self-Rule Act, granting Greenland even more powers.

Iceland vs Greenland - Comparison of Reykjavik and Nuuk

Relations between Iceland and Greenland, both political and economic, have strengthened a lot in recent years. as can be seen in the decision of the Icelandic government to open an embassy in Greenland in 2013 and of the Greenlandic government to open an embassy in Iceland in 2018.

Here are some comparisons between the two countries:

Iceland vs Greenland - Comparison of the population of the two countries

Conversely, the population of Greenland is significantly lower than Iceland's, at around 57,000. The official language of Greenland is Kalaallisut, an Eskealeut language, often called Greenlandic. It is closely related to Inuit languages in Canada, such as Inuktitut. Before 2009, the official language in Greenland used to be Danish, before the government decided to change it to strengthen the position of the Greenlandic heritage.

Iceland vs Greenland - The flags of the two countries

Conversely, Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Greenland has a significant degree of self-rule, but certain areas, especially foreign affairs, and defense, are handled by Denmark. There have been discussions and debates about full independence for Greenland. The 2009 self-rule act includes provisions that could pave the way for Greenland's eventual independence from Denmark if the Greenlandic people choose that path in the future.

Iceland vs Greenland - The difference between the climate and weather

Greenland's vast size means it encompasses several climate zones. During summer, the coastal areas of Greenland can have summer temperatures ranging from 41°F to 50°F (5°C to 10°C), but in the winter, they drop significantly, often plunging well below freezing. The interior areas remain extremely cold year-round.

Iceland vs Greenland - Polar bears are native to Greenland, while the Arctic fox is native to Iceland

Iceland's only native mammal is the Arctic fox, with newcomers such as reindeer and minks having been introduced in recent centuries. Greenland, on the other hand, is home to magnificent animals such as musk oxen and polar bears. Both countries have rich birdlife, especially during the summer when many birds migrate to the islands for mating and nesting.

Iceland vs Greenland - Both countries are worth a visit

A common question when Iceland and Greenland comes up, is which country is better to visit. Choosing between the two countries largely depends on what kind of experience you are seeking because while both countries offer stunning landscapes and unique cultural experiences, they are quite different in many respects.

Iceland vs Greenland - Both countries give great opportunity for hiking and excursions

Traveling in both countries can be relatively expensive, but Greenland often has higher costs due to its remote location. Iceland has a well-developed tourism infrastructure when it comes to accommodations, tours, restaurants, and roads. The infrastructure in Greenland is more limited, and the country does not have a national road system connecting its towns and settlements.

Iceland is also more accessible, offering multiple international flights daily from Europe and North America. In contrast, flights to Greenland are less frequent, harder to come by, and generally quite a bit pricier.

English is widely spoken in Iceland. You can expect most locals, especially the younger generations, to have a near-native proficiency. While some Greenlanders speak good English, their proficiency might not be as high as in Iceland. In the larger towns and especially around the tourism industry, you can expect a good level of English understanding in Greenland.

Iceland vs Greenland - Natural wonders of these great Arctic countries

When visiting Iceland, there are many fantastic guided tours of Icelandic nature you can embark on to see some of the wonders the country has to offer. If you really want the full experience of what Iceland has to offer, you might want to consider a 10-day self-drive tour of the complete Ring Road of Iceland , which will take you around the entire island.

Greenland also has plentiful natural wonders. Taking a boat trip to the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord and witnessing the enormous icebergs is a stunning experience, as is soaking in the Uunartoq Hot Springs. Going dog sledding over the frozen landscape or kayaking in the Arctic waters is a great way of getting to know Greenland's Inuit heritage while taking in the breathtaking scenery.

If you want to create unforgettable memories while visiting Greenland, you can  book a Greenland photography tour with Iceland Photo Tours is an excellent way of doing just that. Founded by the renowned landscape photographer Iurie Belegurschi, Iceland Photo Tours puts you in the hands of expert photographers who ensure you will have a truly immersive experience while exploring stunning landscapes.

Iceland and Greenland - What's the Difference Between the Countries?

Mount Kirkjufell in Iceland.

If you want to  see the northern lights , both Iceland and Greenland are great locations for visitors who want to see this amazing natural phenomenon. No matter which country you choose, make sure you go during the winter months if you're hunting for the aurora borealis, as the northern lights are not visible in the summer due to the midnight sun.

In conclusion, Iceland and Greenland are both fantastic travel destinations in their own right, with charming atmospheres, strong cultural heritage, and majestic landscapes. Visiting Iceland will be more accessible and less costly, but the experience of visiting Greenland might offer a rugged experience, with fewer tourists, that might appeal to some.

That concludes our comparison between Iceland and Greenland. Would you like to visit Iceland, Greenland, or possibly both? If you have, what was your experience? Let us know in the comments below!

The trip was absolutely fantastic! I have been on many tours and this was one of the best. I appreciate the extra effort by Icelandic Mountain Guides and Lars to get us to Tasiilaq when the helicopter was down for repairs. The helo was down for several days and this could have... Read more

All the employees were courteous, informative, and helpful. I was very pleased to have enlisted the help of Greenland Adventures to arrange the logistics of air travel to Greenland, accommodations, and ferry rides between Ilulissat and Eqi. We had a great time.

Besides being the most awarded adventure tour company in Iceland here are the 5 primary reasons to choose Greenland Adventures by Icelandic Mountain Guide as your Greenland expert.

Greenland Specialists at heart

Passion for the Arctic and new adventures took us to Greenland to begin with and we haven’t been able to let go since. We use every occasion to go there and explore new places. Our love and curiosity for this magical country has given us a profound knowledge and understanding of the country, the Inuit culture and where to find the best adventures possible.

Focus on the Journey more than the Destination or Activity

Knowing what impact Greenland can have on you, be it from the vastness, the silence or the people, we are very aware that the journey itself is what matters the most. We know that one of the biggest assets of Greenland is the power of the nature and the state of complete serenity it can evoke and it would be our pleasure to share those places with you.

Wide Selection of Adventures

Whether you are into adrenaline pumping adventures, cultural or unwinding experiences, we have the adventure for you. We offer a wide range of tours in all levels from soft hiking to backpacking and even polar expeditions, from dog sledding and skiing to kayaking adventures, from day tours to adventures of several weeks of contemplation.

Highly Qualified and Certified Guides

Icelandic Mountain Guides is proud to be an award winning and leading company for staff training in Icelandic tourism. We have over 20 years of experience in educating, entertaining and assuring the safety of our guests. This applies to the Greenland Ice cap, the summit of Antarctica and everywhere in between. Our award winning training program is based on safety and training standards from New Zealand.

Quality and Environment First

We work for a responsible and sustainable tourism in Greenland and aim to add value to all communities we visit and minimize the negative effects of tourism on the fragile Arctic environment. For that, we have received several environmental awards throughout the years; last year we were also accepted into Vakinn - a quality and environmental system for Icelandic tourism. Only tourism businesses that maintain the highest standards in all aspects of their business practices and meet VAKINN´s comprehensive assessment criteria have earned the right to carry the official quality label.

Different ways you can experience Iceland

We have tours for all varieties of travel styles and interests. See our options for exploring Iceland below.

Multi-Day Tours

Guided small groups, privately guided, northern lights packages, self-drive winter, best seller, what is the best way to add a greenland trip to an iceland holiday.

Greenland has very limited international flight connections, so plan to start your journey in Iceland . From Europe and North America there are many airlines with flights to Keflavík International Airport in Iceland, which is just 45 minutes by car from Reykjavik. Then from Reykjavik Domestic Airport in Iceland you can fly direct to towns in southern and western Greenland, including the iceberg town of Ilulissat.

How long does it take to fly to Greenland from Iceland? From Reykjavik it’s just 3 hours and 20 minutes to Nuuk, Greenland’s capital city. When you consider that Greenland is the largest island in the world – and that Iceland and Greenland are both fairly remote – that’s not so long!

  • Pack your bags! See the list of airlines that can get you to Iceland

Nordic Visitor’s Iceland tours generally start and end in Reykjavik, so we recommend spending the first leg of your trip in Iceland. On a multi-day tour with day trips , or on a self-drive tour around Iceland , you can start off by taking in the top attractions of Iceland. Make sure to include day tours or a drive with your rental car along Iceland’s south coast so you can visit the glacial sites that are comparable to Greenland.

  • What can you do with all that ice? Check out these 7 ways you can experience glaciers in Iceland

Another advantage of starting your Arctic adventure in Iceland is the relaxing, convenient amenities available to you after an international flight. Soak off your jet lag in the Blue Lagoon , the famous geothermal spa surrounded by lava fields on Reykjanes Peninsula, close to Keflavik Airport.

Then spend some time in the Reykjavik city centre, sampling the variety of local and international cuisines. To get into adventure mode, take a day trip to the Golden Circle route , where you can visit iconic highlights like Gullfoss waterfall, the Geysir hot springs and Þingvellir National Park.

  • Why not drive the full circle about Iceland? See how long it takes to drive around the Ring Road

Short on time with your travel plans? You can just do a day trip to Greenland! From Reykjavik the flight to to the small village of Kulusuk in East Greenland is just 2 hours, and on an 8-hour day tour you’d have some time for hiking, checking out Greenlandic handicrafts and getting insights into Inuit culture and traditions.

When is the best time for Greenland tours from Iceland?

Iceland and Greenland both have extreme seasonal differences in daylight hours and weather conditions . So the attractions and activities you can enjoy will vary quite a bit by month, but especially so in Greenland.

In Iceland you can enjoy most of the famous attractions year-round, as most highlights are located just off the Ring Road, Iceland’s main highway. Of course, the pavements can get slippery in winter – and the daylights hours are short between November and January – but this is prime northern lights season in both countries. Furthermore, in Greenland the winter months – namely February to April – offer the best snow for dog sledding .

  • Wondering about the best time to visit Iceland? Read our complete guide

Please note, however, that Greenland tours from Iceland in wintertime require a lot of flexibility with travel dates . Due to unpredictable and fast-changing winter weather conditions over both Greenland and Iceland, there’s a higher likelihood of flight cancellations in wintertime. That being said, we highly recommend the summer months, primarily June through August, for combining Iceland and Greenland in one holiday .

Summertime is, ironically, the best time for enjoying the ice in Greenland. With the nearly 24-hour daylight at this time of year, you’ll have plenty of time to watch huge icebergs floating off the coasts of small villages. And nothing beats the experience of getting close up to these massive chunks of ice on a guided boat tour, which is only possible in summer. You can even sail on the Ilulissat Icefjord, a World Heritage Site, under the midnight sun!

  • What exactly is this midnight sun? Learn all about this Arctic summer phenomenon

Is the Greenland Ice Cap on your bucket list? As it covers about around 80% of the island’s landmass, It’s pretty hard to miss on a trip to Greenland! This massive glacier, the second largest ice sheet in the world, can be experienced via guided day tours in many of Nordic Visitor’s summer travel packages in Greenland.

If your heart is set on whale watching , then you’re in luck! Both destinations are rich in marine life, with June through August being the peak whale watching months in Iceland and Greenland. For a glimpse of minke, fin and humpback whales in Greenland, we recommend taking a whale watching day tour in the Nuuk Fjord from the city of Nuuk. Whale watching tours are also available from the harbours of Reykjavik and Húsavík in Iceland.

  • A whale of a time! See what an icefjord cruise is like in Greenland

Nordic Visitor offers a wide range of tours in Iceland and Greenland that can be combined and customised to your liking, such as with extra nights and optional activities added to your itinerary.

What do our customers say?

The reviews speak for themselves. See what Nordic Visitor travellers said about their experience with us.

Excellent tour arrangements

We had two different countries in our tour package. Iceland and all the tour arrangements from Nordic Visitor were excellent. The quality of the hotel accommodation was very good. We would have liked to stay at small guest houses sometimes rather than the large hotels, but maybe they were not available. Our car hire experience was mostly good. Our holiday in Greenland was also very good, but there were a couple of things we wanted to pass on to you. Flying from Ilulissat to Nuuk, we didn't realise there were two flights with a change at Kangerlussuaq. It was the same when we flew to Narsarsuaq. We had to take another flight from Paamiut. That was ok but we didn't know and the notes didn't tell us!

Awe inspiring

A fabulous experience.

It was a fabulous experience and loved everything about Greenland, especially the Ilussiat Ice Fiord and sailing among the icebergs at midnight.  The local people were very friendly and welcoming.  The helicopter ride to the Ilulissat glacier was also a highlight and standing on the ice cap by the glacier was an unforgettable experience.

Wonderful to work with

Hotel Icefjord was great. We were given an unusually large room, with a small kitchen. We were pleased. Alexandra was wonderful to work with. She answered all my questions promptly, and was very helpful.

Greenland's Wild West

We booked the 5 day/4 night Greenland's wild west tour for mid-March 2013. Alexandra, our contact at Nordic Visitor, was incredibly helpful throughout the booking process and provided great information. Our trip to Ilulissat, Greenland and all activities and accommodations while there went off without a hitch and was an amazing experience we will never forget. Highly recommend!!!

Great experience

It was a great experience I would repeat and do more. Everyone was so helpful and kind.

We value Nordic Visitor's expertise

This our 4th tour with Nordic Visitor, and we value and appreciate NV's expertise in the local areas and ability to coordinate the various itineraries and facilities. The Greenland tour required a great deal of coordination; logistics for hikes, weather, transportation and lodging were challenging, and NV did a great job putting it all together. There is always room for improvement; as we said previously, it would have been nice to be able to speak directly with or to received detailed information from the local subject matter experts regarding the hikes and tours prior to the trip.

In September, hiking in Ice fiord area is wonderful. The area turned from green to reddish colours within two weeks. A lot of wild berries lied along the undulating hillside. On the far hillside, we saw the first snow and winter was round the corner.

Good service

You provide a good service to people like us who come from so far away and don't know how to get accommodation etc., and so we depend on your advice. We decided to go to Greenland because we saw a blog on your website written by Alexandra who had been there herself. We wanted to do what she had done. Alexandra had booked and organised a self drive holiday around Iceland for us in 2011

Right in front of wonderful Disco bay

We had chosen the "quality" option for hotels, so we thought we'd be staying at the Arctic hotel in Ilulissat, but we were given the Icefiord hotel. In the end we concluded it was much better, since it's a small hotel, has its own charm, and is in an excellent position right in front of wonderful Disco bay. Everything worked out very well and Alexandra Thorisdottir took very good care of us!

Planning to go back next year

I received good practical information, hotel was very nice, friendly people, excellent food. My stay was too short, I´m planning to go back next year to see the West coast as recommended by Erla Sonja, and stay much longer.

Wonderful experience

Thank you for a wonderful experience. We are already working with our travel consultant to book a return trip to Greenland!

Professionalism

Truly memorable and treasured trip.

Because it was necessary to change the dates of the Extra Services (cultural walks/boat trips/etc) of our prepaid tour; we were not adequately dressed for the boat trip thru the icebergs. This was only due to time limitations after arriving from our Iceland flight. Otherwise, everything was wonderful; especially our beautiful view at Hotel Artic!!!!! Erlas Sonja was very nice to work with; we had no issues with any vouchers. Many thanks for making our adventure to Greenland a truly memorable and treasured trip. Our experience was a very positive one. Got your contact from an article in International Travel News written by someone we had met on a trip to Svalbard with several years earlier.

Wonderful support!

Nordic Visitor is a great tour agency. We first contacted them, Alexandria listened to what we wanted to do and arranged exactly what we wanted for our trip. They do a wonderful job of providing information, not only general information on the area but also you get a personalized itinerary and a cell phone to use. We did a ring road trip and a two day excursion to Greenland. We have traveled all over the world and I would recommend this agency to anyone planning a trip to the Nordic countries.

Everything went smoothly

Everything went smoothly from arrival to departure. Pre-arrival experience was good too once the payment went through.

Greatly appreciated!

I had a two day weather delay in Iceland getting to Greenland, and Dagny my travel consultant was fantastic! She made sure that I knew what was happening with the airline, helped to make arrangements with the hotel, and made great suggestions for things for me to do while waiting on a flight. The second day you even sent me to a massage, which was greatly appreciated!

Best booked tour I've taken

The service from your company was extraordinary.  We appreciated all of the materials provided. All in all, this was the best booked tour I've taken anywhere in the world. Great job!

Arranged everything very well

All excellent. Erla promptly answered my questions and arranged everything very well.

Greenland and Southern Iceland - July/Aug 2014

My wife and I did the 4 day Greenland trip to Ilulissat and then the South Iceland trip. They were flawless. Everything was as planned, the trip to Greenland was definitely the highlight. The self drive tour in Iceland was also great, no issues with any logistics. Recommend!!

EPIC Greenland Tours for 2024: The Best Holiday Packages

Greenland is a land of phenomenons with its midnight sun, glacial landscapes, and unique arctic wildlife. Plus, there’s the rare chance to see the skies dance with the northern lights – if you’re  really  lucky. But with the world’s largest island comprising 80% ice and very few roads, getting around Greenland is very difficult if not impossible on your own. That’s why pretty much everyone who visits Greenland does so via some sort of organized tour.

As a marine nation, the best way to absorb the wonders of this icy tundra is by joining a cruise or marine-based adventure. No, don’t panic – Greenland cruises aren’t your typical cruise. You’ll constantly be in and out of your trusty zodiac steed, flitting between the glacial towers and fjords. Fortunately, we have friends in handy places who run fantastic boat trips to Greenland that’ll take you to all the places you want to see.

Now, we know you don’t want to spend your time trawling over different packages. So, we’ve rounded up the best tours in Greenland for you. All you need to do is pack (and save up a few dollars first).

Best Greenland Tours

Best overall tour in greenland – essential greenland: southern coasts and disko bay, best budget tour of greenland – explore greenland and spitsbergen: fjords and glaciers, best greenland tour for photographers – northwest passage: epic high arctic, best adventure tour in greenland – greenland adventure by sea, land and air, most unique tour in greenland – spitsbergen, jan mayen, greenland and iceland, quick guide to visiting greenland, final thoughts on the best greenland tours.

Not many people can say they’ve explored this unique island nation. This massive realm of glaciers and fjords feels like you’re cruising into an entirely different world.

As we said, all tours in Greenland are marine expeditions. That means you’ll live aboard a comfy ship , stopping off to explore villages and landmass via zodiac boat, kayak, and even helicopter on some tours. All you need to do is decide which parts of Greenland appeal the most to you, and the most convenient port of embarkment/disembarkment. Oh, and how deep your pockets are – Greenland isn’t for shoestring backpackers.

It’s time for you to sail into a part of the world few will venture! Let’s find out which of these Greenland holidays is best for you.

Abandoned Arctic ghost towns, plunging fjords, and colourful Arctic tundra – this trip is a cocktail of culture and natural wonders. Experience the east, south and west coasts of Greenland – each has its own unique features. In the east you can view glaciers deep within the fjords, the south is steeped in Norse history, and the west has icebergs and mountainous landscapes aplenty.

The best Greenland tours give you an opportunity to connect with local communities, and that’s what you’ll do on this agenda. Besides meeting small sheep-farming communities, you’ll get to explore the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk – one of the most northern cities on the planet.

Note that this one starts and ends in Reykjavik, Iceland , if you fancy continuing your arctic adventure.

Southern Coasts and Disko Bay Greenland

Who is this tour best for?

Couples, families, travellers of all ages. Anyone who wants to experience as much of the Greenlandic coastline as possible.

  • Expensive (this will be a theme – we warned you)
  • Some adventure activities (such as kayaking) cost extra and must be booked in advance

You might gawk at us when we say this is the best budget tour in Greenland, but as we said – the arctic ain’t cheap. There really is no such thing as a truly bare-bones budget trip for Greenland. This 2-week cruise gives you a glimpse into the unspoiled wilderness of Greenland, Svalbard, and Spitsbergen . Zodiacs and your own two feet will take you even deeper into this glacial paradise of fjords, bays, and inlets.

Spend days gazing out upon frigid ocean horizons looking out for orca, humpback, and minke whales. On land, you might sight arctic foxes and reindeer! You’ll also have the chance to a stop at the most remote town in Greenland – Ittoqqortoormiit – and learn how the 450 inhabitants live. While we’re on dry land, you have a chance to meet some huskies here as well.

This loop trip deposits you back in Longyearbyen, from where you can arrange your onwards travel. Alternatively, you could opt for the Arctic Highlights tour, also offered by GAdventures. This one finishes in Reykjavik, which may be more convenient for your onward travel plans.

Fjords and Glaciers Greenland

Couples, families, bucket-listers, wildlife enthusiasts. Phillip Pullman fans who dreamed of visiting Svalbard. Those hungry for knowledge – your expedition includes daily lectures and educational talks.

  • Arranging your inward and outward travel to Longyearbyen (a territory belonging to Norway) might bump up the costs depending on where you fly from
  • Due to the timings of luggage drop-off and embankment, you will also need to arrange your own accommodation the night prior to the tour

  • Number of days: 17
  • Price: $19,140 USD
  • Group Size: 8 min, 200 max

Feeling flush and ready for an adventure that you (and your bank manager) will never forget? This epic expedition gets you hiking over permafrost, wildlife spotting, and cruising past fjords, glaciers and icebergs on a daily basis.

You’ll encounter abandoned research stations, places where explorers of old met their demise, and tiny Inuit communities. Pitched as immersive expedition travel, you’ll hear the crash of glacier shards falling into the icy ocean. If you’re up to the challenge, take a polar plunge yourself. All tours in Greenland are a match made in heaven for photographers. But considering the distance you cover in this one, you can get really creative as you document your journey.

Intrepid runs a very similar version to this trip, the Northwest Passage: In the Footsteps of Franklin . It’s the same number of days, same price, and same start/endpoints. However, the cruise hugs the Canadian mainland rather than Greenland.

Epic High Arctic Greenland

Older travellers, couples, bucket-listers, wildlife enthusiasts. Canadians and North Americans (the trip starts and ends in Toronto)

  • Yup – expensive
  • No meals are included and certain activities such as kayaking are not included in the price

Deep within the fjord system, you’ll see dramatic landscapes ranging from snow-capped mountains to fields blooming with flowers. Yeah – we know, not exactly what you’d expect from holidays in Greenland of all places, despite the irony of the name.

This tour has a very fluid itinerary, so you can expect each day to bring something unexpected. Beginning and ending in Reykjavik, you can continue your quest in Iceland.

Greenland Adventure by Sea Land Air Greenland

Modern-day adventurers, couples, travellers of all ages, bucket-listers, wildlife enthusiasts.

  • Activities could be hindered if the weather doesn’t cooperate
  • At full capacity, the boat may feel busy

land tours of iceland and greenland

  • Number of days: 18
  • Price: £15,040 USD
  • Accommodation type: Comfortable, en suite cruise ship cabins
  • How many meals included: 17 breakfasts, 15 lunches, 16 dinners

If you think Greenland is a radical destination for travel, wait until you get to Jan Mayen. This is a volcanic island drifting right in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, surrounded by ice. We know, the mind boggles.

Besides this, the trip chucks in all the usual (albeit amazing) suspects. Unforgettable zodiac rides, spectacular fjords and trips peering out trying to spot an elusive polar bear. But, there is no standard arctic circle trip – you just never know what the weather or mother nature will throw at you.

Need to transpose your start and endpoints? Then book the Spitsbergen, East Greenland and Iceland – Northbound tour instead. It’s a very similar route, although it misses Jan Mayen.

Spitsbergen Jan Mayen Greenland

Couples, families, bucket-listers, photographers, wildlife lovers, those interested in geology

  • Another option which is especially pricey
  • Depending on your nationality, you may need visas for three different countries – Norway, Greenland and Iceland. Do check before you book.

Best Time to Visit Greenland

Best Time to Visit in Greenland

With long days and the promise of the midnight sun, summer (June to September) is the typical season to plan a vacation in Greenland. The temperatures are a tad warmer, and you are more likely to sight arctic wildlife. It’s not just travellers who enjoy frolicking in the 24-hour sun! However, the drawback is that there will be increased tourists and those 200-capacity cruisers might fill up easily.

Having said that, we still reckon it’s one of the top hiking spots in North America for the summertime .

While it’s not a guarantee, there is a chance of sighting the Northern Lights in Greenland. You are most likely to spot this phenomenon during dark, clear nights from September until the beginning of April. Choose a winter tour to Greenland if this is high on your agenda.

There’s no right or wrong – whatever time of year you choose to explore Greenland, you’re in for a visual treat.

Travel Insurance for your Greenland Tour

When booking organised trips to Greenland (or anywhere else, for that matter) you will probably need to take out travel insurance. If you rock up to orientation without proof, your CEO is going to send you straight back home.

Realistically, you’re not looking at any imminent danger. But, natural disasters can strike (remember the havoc reaped by Eyjafjallajökull in 2010) and you’ll want that cover just in case. Plus, flights can go bust, and while the chances of theft on your Greenland vacation are slim, breakages or damage to expensive camera gear are less so.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

What to Pack for Greenland

What to Pack Greenland

One thing you’ll need for any of these tours in Greenland is a strategic packing list. It’s going to be cold, wet, and wintery. In fact, it’ll be downright freezing – this is the Arctic after all. Plus, whichever tour you take, there are some mandatory bits of kit you’ll need. We’ve noted those below, along with a few other essentials.

Below – the VA team should try to link to as many TBB gear review articles as possible – just a reminder.

  • Camera (bring additional memory cards and batteries)
  • Binoculars (highly recommended)
  • Drybag (essential for Zodiac landings)
  • First-aid kit (as well as the obvious essentials, bring a remedy for seasickness. Just in case!)
  • Polarised sunglasses
  • Thermal layers – don’t forget your sexy thermal undies
  • Lighter layers for downtime – all boats are heated sufficiently
  • Fleece/thermal/ down jacket
  • Waterproof trousers (mandatory for any Zodiac landings)
  • Swimsuit (in summer, it is possible to take the polar plunge)
  • Hat, scarf and gloves
  • Footwear with excellent grip (open-toed shoes aren’t permitted in public spaces on the expedition ships)
  • Sunscreen and SPF lip balm
  • Kindle, podcasts, journal , and a pack of cards
  • Outlet adapter (check your booking handbook for electricity voltage onboard)

packable travel medical kit

Things go wrong on the road ALL THE TIME. Be prepared for what life throws at you.

Buy an AMK Travel Medical Kit before you head out on your next adventure – don’t be daft!

And that’s a wrap on the five best tours in Greenland. Now you can evaluate which itinerary speaks to you and go ahead and take the polar plunge to book your arctic voyage.  While all the trips we’ve listed share a common theme of being marine expeditions, the sites do vary significantly. Remember that this expansive island varies depending on which coast you choose to explore. Plus, the further north you sail, the frostier the conditions.

Still can’t decide which Greenland vacation is for you? Our top pick is the Essential Greenland: Southern Coasts and Disko Bay tour. It’s not as costly as the other tours and gives you a well-rounded experience of Greenland’s culture, geology and wildlife.

Whichever trip you pick – Greenland is going to blow your mind. Can we come too?

In the absence of people, wildlife abounds. And with some luck, you might see iconic Arctic species like musk oxen and polar bears.

Expect majestic fjord landscapes, historical ruins, abundant Arctic wildlife and a potential visit to one of the most remote communities in the world before we sail to Iceland at the end of the cruise.

Explore cosmopolitan Oslo

Enjoy time in Oslo before flying to Svalbard

Your adventure begins in Oslo, Norway’s fjord-side capital. If you have time, explore the city and enjoy what it has to offer.

With its rich history, diverse eateries and lively art scene, Oslo is a fascinating place. You’ll find museums, galleries and some very modern architecture – including the beautiful Opera House and new Munch Museum. The city is compact enough to explore at a relaxed pace.

Go for a walk in the Ekebergparken Sculpture Park, visit Akershus Fortress or relax in a floating sauna in the fjord. Explore modern Sørenga to enjoy urban beach life and perhaps try some New Nordic cuisine before spending the night at your airport hotel.

Longyearbyen adventures

Explore the town at the top of the world

After your morning flight to Longyearbyen, it’s time to explore the world’s northernmost town, a colorful frontier settlement where people are outnumbered by snowmobiles.

Longyearbyen is perfect for exploring on foot. Stroll down the main street and you might see Svalbard reindeer pass by. Although wild, they’re curious and gentle.

Before boarding your ship in the afternoon and continuing your Arctic discovery, join an included excursion and get a glimpse of this amazing polar bear–inspired region at the top of the world. And if you’d like to discover even more of Longyearbyen’s special surroundings, simply join our optional Pre-Program.

Relaxing at sea

Getting ready for Greenland – Kalaallit Nunaat

As we sail into the Greenland Sea on our way to the world’s largest island, it’s time to relax, find your sea legs and get acquainted with the onboard facilities.

The Expedition Team will give talks about your upcoming adventure and explain the protocols of respectfully visiting wildlife habitats and Indigenous Arctic communities. In the lecture hall, you’ll find out what to expect in the epic landscapes of East Greenland National Park and the stunning fjords of Scoresby Sund.

If you’re feeling active, head to the gym and work out with a view. On the other hand, you could try out the sauna, relax in a hot tub, indulge yourself at the onboard eateries or just find a quiet corner to read a book with a hot drink. Love science? Then join one of our onboard Citizen Science projects, a fun and engaging way to contribute to global research.

Northeast Greenland National Park and Scoresby Sund expedition days

Explore the wild east

We’ll spend the next 10 days exploring Greenland’s remote and pristine east coast. Extending for over 1,740 miles from north to south, this long stretch of coast is cold, isolated and remote, even by Greenlandic standards. The south-flowing East Greenland Current brings lots of sea ice directly from the Arctic Ocean, challenging human settlement but creating a haven for ice-dependent wildlife, including the polar bear.

Local weather and ice conditions will dictate our exact route, but our plan is to sail first to Scoresby Sund, the world’s largest fjord system. You’ll feel a deep sense of serenity in this wild and rugged region with white and blue icebergs floating in mirror-like waters surrounded by looming mountains. If conditions permit, we’ll visit Ittoqqortoormiit – the most remote inhabited community in the western hemisphere.

Should the sea ice be favorable, we’ll continue our journey north to the beautiful Northeast Greenland National Park – the world’s largest national park. Visiting this fragile Artic wilderness is a rare privilege as only a few visitors are permitted here each year.

Apart from old trapper huts, some science research stations, and a military outpost, there are very few traces of human life in this 375,000 square mile park. Be assured that this is one of the quietest places on Earth, and you’ll enjoy a feeling of great peace as we explore this beautiful wilderness.

As this is an expedition cruise, the Captain and Expedition Team will guide us to the most favorable spots on a day-by-day basis. Our goal will be to pack in as many shore landings, small boat cruises, nature walks, kayaking adventures and wildlife sightings as possible.

Denmark Strait

Heading to Iceland

After exploring the remote beauty of Greenland, we’ll set our course back to Iceland. Spend the days at sea recapping your experiences with your new friends, studying nature in the Science Center, listening to a lecture or two, or just relaxing on deck. Look out for the seabirds that follow our ship and keep an eye out for whales.

East Greenland’s beauty is sure to have left its mark on you, so reflect on what you’ve seen – from the delicate ecology of the fjord systems to the ethereal elegance of the floating ice.

End of the expedition

We say a fond farewell to MS Fram as we end our expedition cruise in the lovely city of Reykjavík. With its interesting museums, stylish galleries, restaurants and geothermal pools, there’s so much to enjoy in Iceland’s capital.

And if you want to discover more of Iceland, you can join our optional Post-Program before you head home. Or simply extend your stay to enjoy more of Reykjavík and its surrounding geothermal attractions. It’s a great place to end an epic journey!

Iceland, Greenland and Northwest Passage – Great Explorer Trail

land tours of iceland and greenland

31-day Grand Expedition Cruise from Iceland to the fjords of Greenland and Canada’s Northwest Passage in 2024/2025

Greenland’s remote east coast

The vast wilderness of Greenland’s rarely visited east coast is accessible by ship for only a few months of the year. From Reykjavík, we head to Scoresby Sund, an immense system of fjords and glaciers that fans out over 24,000 square miles. Soak up the beauty and silence, and look out for seals, whales and birds like Greenlandic Gyrfalcons.

Following a legendary route

Returning to Reykjavík, we’ll sail to Prince Christian Sound and explore the fjords and settlements of Greenland’s west coast, including the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord. We'll cruise the waterways of the Davis Strait and Baffin Bay, and just like the great explorers, we’ll attempt to navigate the channels of the Northwest Passage to Cambridge Bay. Your adventure ends in Edmonton .

Cosmopolitan Reykjavík

11 August 2024

Discover Iceland's modern capital

Your Grand Expedition Cruise to Greenland and the Northwest Passage begins in Reykjavík, Iceland’s cosmopolitan capital.

Packed full of art, culture and history, it’s well worth taking time to explore Reykjavík, either before or after your cruise.

Take a stroll along Laugavegur with its boutiques and outdoor shops, head to the striking Hallgrímskirkja church or fascinating Reykjavík Art Museum. Or why not join one of our optional Pre-Programmes.

MS Fram awaits you in Reykjavík Harbour. Find your cabin, meet your Expedition Team and explore the ship –  your adventure has begun.

12 August 2024

Crossing the Denmark Strait

Today we sail to Greenland across the Denmark Strait.

Your Expedition Team will explain the protocols of visiting wildlife habitats, and how we interact with the Indigenous Arctic communities respectfully.

In the Science Center, you can learn more about Greenland's geology, or join one of our Citizen Science projects. Why not hit the gym or relax in the panoramic sauna before enjoying a delicious meal in one of our onboard restaurants.

Scoresby Sund fjord system

13 August 2024 - 21 August 2024

Largest fjord system on Earth

You’ll spend the next nine days exploring the vast wilderness of Scoresby Sund, the world’s largest fjord system.

Cruising peacefully against a backdrop of looming mountains, blue icebergs and mirror-like waters, you’ll seek out wildlife like whales and Greenlandic Gyrfalcons. Making the most of the conditions, we pack in as many shore landings, nature walks, kayaking tours and wildlife sightings as possible.

You’ll visit Ittoqqortoormiit – the most remote inhabited community in the Western Hemisphere, and if conditions allow, we’ll sail towards the ever-changing east Greenland Sea ice edge to scout for wildlife.

If you want to do your bit, you can participate in Citizen Science projects that help preserve the region for future generations.

Relax at sea

14 August 2024

Heading back to Iceland

After exploring the remote beauty of Greenland, we set our course back for Iceland. Spend the days at sea recapping your experiences with new friends, studying nature in the Science Center, listening to a lecture or two, or just relaxing on deck. Look out for the seabirds that follow our ship and keep an eye out for whales.

As you reflect on the first leg of your Grand Expedition Cruise, from witnessing the delicate ecology of the fjord systems to the ethereal elegance of the floating ice, east Greenland’s beauty is sure to have left its mark on you.

Rest in Reykjavík

23 August 2024

Enjoy an outdoor spa experience at the Blue Lagoon

Returning to Reykjavík, you’ll now have another opportunity to explore the delights you may have missed on your first visit. In this city of art and culture, there are plenty of galleries and museums to enjoy. Or if you simply wish to relax, why not take a trip to the famous Blue Lagoon.

Enjoy an unforgettable outdoor spa experience as you relax the geothermally heated water that gets its iconic bright blue colour from silica and other minerals carried down from the volcanic landscape. As you soak, enjoy a drink and a chat with locals and fellow guests as you look forward to the next step on your adventure – west Greenland and the Northwest Passage!

The Denmark Strait revisited

24 August 2024 - 25 August 2024

Heading towards Greenland and the Northwest Passage

We sail to west Greenland across the Denmark Strait once again, the route taken by Erik the Red, supposedly the first European to have settled there.

Get ready to explore the west coast of Greenland. Most Greenlanders live on the west side of their country, and you’ll be exploring some of the towns and settlements scattered along this coast – as well as its awe inspiring fjords, glaciers and mountains.

Prince Christian Sound

26 August 2024

Breathtaking panoramas and abundant wildlife

Description text

We aim to explore the incredible waters of the 60-mile-long Prince Christian Sound today. Sharp-peaked granite mountains provide a stunning contrast to the bright white glaciers. Look out for icebergs and colourful houses in the village of Aappilattoq.

Nature is abundant here. Keep an eye out for ringed and bearded seals resting on the ice, and Glaucous Gulls and Black Guillemots soaring above. You may even spot minke and humpback whales.

If sea ice prevents us entering the sound, we'll head to craggy Cape Farewell, the southernmost point of Greenland.

Exploring Kvanefjord

27 August 2024

Discover the glacial beauty of the west coast fjords

Experience your first sight of Greenland’s sublime west coast fjords as we reach Kvanefjord in Sermersooq, meaning 'Place of Much Ice'.

Have your camera ready for glistening icebergs and semi-submerged glacial ice – pure white with undertones of crystalline blue. These sculpted ice blocks are some of Arctic nature’s finest creations.

Few people venture into this remote fjord, making it even more special to spend the day exploring here. The Expedition Team will select places to venture ashore and enjoy the beautiful scenery on a nature walk, or head out in boats to scout for wildlife.

Nuuk, Greenland's capital

28 August 2024

Experience Greenlandic culture, old and new, in Nuuk

After several days exploring remote, varied landscapes, you'll cruise into Nuuk, Greenland’s colourful capital. With a population of 18,000, it has a striking mix of old and new buildings.

Compare the old buildings – such as Hans Egede House and Nuuk Cathedral – with the ultra-modern architecture of the Parliament of Greenland building.

Visit the national museum to gain fascinating insight into life here 500 years ago and see the six Qilakitsoq mummies. Or join a long nature walk through Paradise Valley and around Mt. Lille Malene.

Spectacular Sisimiut

29 August 2024

Explore ancient traditions in Arctic Greenland

We reach Sisimiut, Greenland’s second city. It sits in a spectacular location just 25 miles north of the Arctic Circle. This area has history spanning more than 4,500 years.

Old traditions are alive and well here, and you can learn more about the ancient Saqqaq artifacts in the local museum.

If you're looking for a special souvenir, pick up a scarf, hat or mittens made of qiviut, the inner wool of a musk ox, said to be 10 times warmer than sheep wool. Or why not explore the area by foot and stretch your legs on a hike.

UNESCO-listed Ilulissat

30 August 2024

The town where you can see and hear the ice flow

Our expedition cruise reaches Disko Bay – a haven for whales and seals. You’re in for a unique experience. Nestled in the magnificent Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is Ilulissat. Against a backdrop of colourful houses is an ever-changing gallery of passing icebergs.

Marvel at giant icebergs floating past in the deep blue waters as they take on different hues of white, grey and blue. With the help of the ship’s photographer, enthusiasts will be able to capture the nuances of these sculptures of nature.

Crossing the Labrador Sea

31 August 2024 - 1 September 2024

Watch for wildlife and get involved in Citizen Science

Leaving Greenland behind, our expedition cruise continues to Canada across the Labrador Sea. We'll enter the Davis Strait, named after English explorer John Davis, who led expeditions here in the 16th century. The Expedition Team will continue their onboard lectures on topics such as the wildlife of Northern Labrador, Inuit culture and the history of Arctic exploration.

The strait is known for its abundance of seals, whales and cod. Why not take part in one of our Citizen Science programme projects, helping photograph and track whales, or observe the clouds to help scientists study our climate by contributing to the GLOBE Program.

The Northwest Passage

2 September 2024 - 8 September 2024

Crossing a historical sea corridor through Canada's Arctic archipelago

Like the pioneering explorers who've come before you, we won't have an exact itinerary as we attempt to sail our state-of-the-art ice-class ship from the Atlantic to the Pacific via this famed sea route. Stops might include Pond Inlet, Dundas Harbour, Fort Ross, Gjoa Haven, and Cambridge Bay.

As we explore, we'll land at sites linked to early exploration history, visit Inuit communities, and look out for Arctic wildlife such as polar bears, whales, narwhals, seals and seabirds.

You'll go small expedition boat cruising between ice floes, and go ashore to experience the pristine wilderness first hand. Your Expedition Team will adapt activities to ice and weather conditions, giving you the best experience possible.

We’ll try to reach Pond Inlet and the Inuit community of Mittimatalik on Baffin Island. On Devon Island – the largest uninhabited island on Earth – we'll visit Dundas Harbour and learn about its Thule heritage. We may even pay our respects at the graves of three Franklin expedition team members on Beechey Island.

We'll continue west to Fort Ross, a former Hudson Bay Trading post, before sailing to Gjoa Haven, where Roald Amundsen learned polar survival tips from the Netsilik Inuit people. If we are able to land here, we'll take a walking tour to learn more.

Wildlife of Cambridge Bay

9 September 2024

Wildlife and conservation in this fish-rich bay

Our expedition cruise continues into wildlife-rich Cambridge Bay, where you'll disembark. Here, you might see Arctic char, musk oxen and caribou. You'll also find the Canadian High Arctic Research Station, an important centre for climate change research.

Home to only 2,000 residents, Cambridge Bay is popular with fly-fishers, keen to net giant Arctic char or lake trout. Its local name 'Iqaluktuuttiaq' even means ‘a good fishing place’.

Walk around and explore before we take our evening flight to  Edmonton .

Southampton

land tours of iceland and greenland

Southampton is a port city on England’s south coast. It’s home to the SeaCity Museum, with an interactive model of the Titanic, which departed from Southampton in 1912. Nearby, Southampton City Art Gallery specialises in modern British art. Solent Sky Museum features vintage aircraft like the iconic Spitfire. Tudor House & Garden displays artifacts covering over 800 years of history, including a penny-farthing bike.

Falmouth/England

land tours of iceland and greenland

For year round relaxation and recreation, Falmouth has a tradition of genuine hospitality founded on its centuries old port and superb location at the southern end of the Fal Estuary - arguably Britain's most beautiful network of creeks and rivers. Blessed with excellent sandy bathing beaches and a vibrant town, Falmouth can offer you contrasts, convenience and choice in making the most of your holiday. Falmouth has an impressive record of excellence in tourism. Generations of investment, from the first custom built tourist hotel in 1865, to the imposing Ships & Castles Leisure Pool of today, makes Falmouth proud to welcome you! With one of the world's deepest natural harbours, today's Falmouth is fast developing its international reputation as one of the great sailing and watersports centres of the world. Every year new accolades are added to its impressive list of international sailing events. With marina facilities for the yachtsman and quays for visiting cruise liners, Falmouth is never short of interest and spectacle for the visitor. The Fal Estuary's deep water and sheltered anchorage have been of strategic importance to the defence of Britain since Tudor times. Any enemy securing the Estuary could easily land an army and bring in fresh supplies of food, weapons and soldiers. Henry VIII recognised this threat and built Pendennis and St Mawes Castles on opposite sides of the Estuary to protect the anchorage. Thus began one of the most fascinating stories of British Coastal defence spanning 450 years. Pendennis Castle is a showpiece of British History and one of Falmouth's gems. Built in the mid-sixteenth century, Pendennis overlooks the mile-wide mouth of the River Fal, at the most westerly point where it was possible to anchor safely. It is difficult to imagine today, when visiting this popular holiday area of Cornwall, how wild and remote this beautiful part of the coast used to be. But the massive walls, rambling rooms and stone staircases of Pendennis make it easy to imagine the scenes of bloody conflict 350 years ago. An exhibition in the old gun room helps you experience almost at first hand the sights and sounds of a Tudor battle. And there are artefacts from the Second World War, when Pendennis was again called into action. In Victorian times, Falmouth's world-wide links across the sea led to the development of public gardens containing wonderful collections of exotic plants. Owing to a year-round mild climate, plants such as Citrus, Daturas, Dracaena palms, Camellias, Abutious, Azaleas, Rohododendrons and many unusual species of Bamboo, still thrive today. At Fox Rosehill Gardens for example, Banana trees grow in the open! In addition to Falmouth's four main gardens of Gyllyndune, Kinberley Park, Fox Rosehill and Queen Mary, the vast gardens of Trelissick, Glendurgan and Trebah are all within easy reach of the town. Falmouth's town centre contains many of the expected high street shopping names, alongside restaurants and specialist shops with great maritime charm. Laced with many notable and unusual listed buildings (like the King's Pipe which was used to burn contraband tobacco in the days of old style smuggling), the town has a reassuring warmth and contains a surprising range of opportunities. The Falmouth Arts Centre, The Cornwall Maritime Museum (where the story of the famous Falmouth Packet shops is explained), and the Falmouth Art Gallery (with its renowned collection of Tuke paintings), complimented by the Princess Pavillion, together providing a comprehensive programme of exhibitions, concerts and theatrical events throughout the year. Touring groups, local, national and international performers and artists will all be found at Falmouth. Falmouth has four superb beaches: Gyllynvase, Castle, Swanpool and Maenporth. Each offers well managed facilities catering for both the active and the not so active beach afficionado. Alternatively, why not step aboard one of the many excellent pleasure boats plying the local waters of Falmouth and fully experience the maritime charm of this most beautiful part of Cornwall.

land tours of iceland and greenland

Queenstown it was for some decades before reverting to its old Irish name in 1922 - the Cobh (cove) of Cork. Is there anywhere in Ireland more full of poignant memories than this embarkation point for America? From here hundreds of thousands of mostly hungry and penniless Irish men and women left to build a new life, especially in the Famine years of 1844-48. Many thrived and prospered, but many died on the journey in the terrible travelling conditions of the time. It is a pleasant town; its streets climb the steep slope of a hill, the top of which is crowned by the very fine St. Coleman's Cathedral which has a carillon of 47 bells. Cobh is situated on Great Island, one of the three large islands in Cork harbour which are all now joined by roads and bridges - Little Island and Fota are the others. The harbour is one of the largest and safest anywhere, being capable of taking the largest vessels afloat. The great Transatlantic liners used to come in up to the 1950s. On the quayside there is a memorial to the victims of the Lusitania, many of whom are buried in the old church cemetery. The ship was sunk off Kinsale in 1915 by a German submarine, an action which was responsible for bringing the United States of America into the Great War, the survivors were brought back here. Another unhappy association is with the Titanic, 'the safest liner in the world'. Queenstown was her last port of call on her fateful maiden voyage. The Queenstown Story is based in the disused portions of the railway station at Cobh. This highly imaginative visitor attraction tells the story of emigration from Cobh in the period of the famine in 1845 up to the era of the great Liners in the 1950s. The historical role which Cobh harbour has played as a port is also illustrated. At Cobh, one looks over Haulbowline and Spike Islands, formerly the base of the Irish Naval Service. To the east, Cork Harbour leads to East Ferry. Roches Point can be seen to the south. To the south west is the yachting centre of Crosshaven.

Qaqortoq, sitting at the tip of the peninsula in the south of Greenland, is a clean pleasant harbor town built on the site of Hans Egede's search for the lost colonists. Although only boasting 3500 people, it's considered to be the hub of the south and is worth visiting in summer when the place explodes with wildflowers. The town's pride of possession is the town square fountain - the only one in Greenland - with the names of the town burghers, past and present, in brass letters on the base (although many names have fallen victim to souvenir hunters). Qaqortoq museum is worth a gander - it's one of Greenland's finest - and exhibits artifacts from past and present cultures. Mostly, though, Qaqortoq is used as a base for hiking treks: either one day hikes up 'Peter's Cairn’ or around the edge of the Tasersuaq Lake, or as a departure point for the three- to four-day treks to the neighboring town of Igaliku. The Hvalsey ruins, sitting on a coastal strip just out of Qaqortoq, are the most extensive and best preserved Norse ruins in Greenland. There is a choice of ferry services on most days of the week, and several daily flights to other settlements along the west coast. It's also possible to trek from some of the neighboring towns. Qaqortoq is 450km (279mi) down the coast from Nuuk, although the distance by foot would be much greater given the heavily fringed coastline.

land tours of iceland and greenland

Nanortalik is close to the southwestern tip of Greenland at the mouth of several fjords, south of Qaqortoq. Sites of interest include the colonial quarter of the town amid the surrounding fjord and mountains. Tourists can witness the imposing granite peaks and spires of the Nunaap Isua (Cape Farewell) and Tasermiut Fjord regions, where the scenery is spectacular.

Reykjavik, on the coast of Iceland, is the country's capital and largest city. It's home to the National and Saga museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history. The striking concrete Hallgrimskirkja church and rotating Perlan glass dome offer sweeping views of the sea and nearby hills. Exemplifying the island’s volcanic activity is the geothermal Blue Lagoon spa, near the village of Grindavik.

Isafjorour is a town in the Westfjords region of northwest Iceland. It's known for its dramatic landscapes. The old town has wooden houses with corrugated tin roofs built by fishing merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Westfjords Heritage Museum has exhibits on the town’s maritime history, including a collection of old fishing boats. The old hospital, now a cultural center, contains archives and photography.

Akureyri is a city at the base of Eyjafjorour Fjord in northern Iceland. In the center, the 1940 Akureyri Church has stained-glass windows portraying scenes from Icelandic Christian history. There are views of the fjord from the forecourt. Nearby, the Akureyri Art Museum displays contemporary art from Iceland and farther afield. To the south are the Botanical Gardens, with specimens from across Iceland.

Day 1: Reykjavik City Tour and Hallgrimskirkja

Take a walking food tour and begin exploring Iceland’s 1000-year-old history in its beautiful capital city. You’ll be charmed by its mix of modern and traditional architecture and the beautiful brightly colored rooftops. You’ll also discover why it is considered one of the cleanest, greenest, and safest cities in the world. A food tour is a great way to get to know a city and decide where you would like to eat for the rest of your time in Reykjavik.

Day 2: Thingvellir National Park & Gullfoss Waterfall

Head out to spectacular Thingvellir National Park, a meeting place of old Icelandic clans and the home of the Icelandic Parliament from its foundation in 930 AD until 1798. It is also where Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet aboveground. Journey to the Secret Lagoon: smaller and more intimate than the Blue Lagoon, it’s the place where savvy travelers go to enjoy the Icelandic spa experience. Enjoy a unique light lunch at the greenhouse of Fridheimar Farm, surrounded by the tomato plants that have provided the food. Then it’s on to the famous Strokkur Geysir, which erupts every 10 minutes or so. Stop at the powerful Gullfoss Waterfall – fed by Iceland’s second-biggest glacier, the falls are the largest in Europe.

Day 3: Reykjavik & The Blue Lagoon Spa

Enjoy a free afternoon in the capital city Reykjavik and explore on your own some of the city’s historic places. In the evening, travel to the Blue Lagoon, a large lake surrounded by a lava field which is also a geothermal spa. One of the 25 wonders of the world, you can also see the midnight sun in summer or the Northern Lights in winter as you say farewell to Iceland.

The Sky Lagoon is another option that you can substitute here if you wish.

Day 4: Dublin Sightseeing

Transfer to Dublin. Enjoy your day with an independent Dublin Hop-on, Hop-Off bus tour and a visit to one of Dublin’s top attractions — Guinness Storehouse, Teeling Distillery, EPIC Ireland, or the General Post Office Museum. Dine independently this evening.

Day 5: Dublin & Merry Ploughboy Pub

Enjoy the morning exploring Dublin with the included vouchers. Meet your guide at 2:00 PM in the hotel lobby when all participants join a local guide for a tour of ancient and modern Dublin. Drive through the main streets to see historic buildings such as Trinity College; rows of Georgian houses with colorfully painted doorways; and the new buildings around the Financial Centre beside the River Liffey. Take a guided tour through parts of Dublin Castle, which was the seat of power and government for many centuries and today plays a leading role in European Union activities. Return to your hotel for a get-together with your tour group and a welcome drink. In the evening head to the Merry Ploughboy Pub for a great dinner of Irish specialties and a lively show with popular Irish songs and intricate step-dancing.

Day 6: Blarney Castle & Killarney

Depart Dublin and travel through the midlands of Ireland, which has many mixed farms. Stop for photos of the stately ruins on the Rock of Cashel, rising high above the surrounding plain. Continue your drive south and, just a few miles outside Cork, visit Blarney Castle to kiss the famous “Stone of Eloquence.” Visit the Blarney Woollen Mills where you can find quality Irish made goods of all types, conveniently displayed under one roof. Drive through Macroom, built around a fine castle, and into County Kerry where the scenery becomes more mountainous. Arrive in Killarney, picturesquely set beside lakes with Ireland’s highest mountains, the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, forming a backdrop. Check in to your hotel and relax before dinner.

Day 7: Ring of Kerry & Skellig Experience

Today embark on Ireland’s most popular scenic drive of 100 miles – the Ring of Kerry. This winding route reveals breathtaking views of Macgillycuddy’s Reeks as well as the scenic coast of beaches and cliffs. As you travel along, there will be plenty of stops for photos at the best vantage points. After a casual lunch in a cozy restaurant you’ll continue your scenic drive. Cross to Valentia Island by bridge where you’ll visit the Skellig Experience. Learn about the off-shore island of Skellig Michael where early Christian monks lived in austere conditions and how it was used as one of the locations for the film “Star Wars VII.” Pause for a stroll around Sneem, with its brightly painted houses, and again at Moll’s Gap for panoramic views of Ireland’s highest mountains and deep valleys. Get a taste of farm life with a sheepdog demonstration of herding flocks, and see different breeds of sheep. Return to Killarney and enjoy a free evening for independent dining or exploring the many pubs in the town.

Day 8: Cliffs of Moher & Bunratty Castle

Leave Killarney and drive north to Tarbert for a 20-minute ferry ride across the wide River Shannon Estuary. Your tour continues along the coast of County Clare to the Cliffs of Moher, a spectacular wall of sandstone that reaches almost 700 feet above the Atlantic Ocean. Drive past Lahinch Golf Course, one of Ireland’s most famous, and through the marketing town of Ennis to Bunratty. Check into Bunratty Castle Hotel, which is located close to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. In the evening head to Bunratty or Knappogue Castle for a memorable experience in a wonderful historic setting with good food and entertainment. Take your place in the Great Hall for a medieval-style feast of excellent dishes and plenty of wine. During and after the meal the lords and ladies will serenade you with song and harp music evocative of the Middle Ages.

Day 9: Depart from Shannon

Your tour ends after breakfast.

We are more than happy to include a flight quote separately to your package so that you can decide if you would like to book with us or on your own.  While booking flights can seem straight-forward, there are often hidden fees or classes of service that do not include seat assignments, meals or checked bags. We have been booking flights since 1985 and know the best routings and have great contracts that mean we often have better prices than what you will see online.
