Coastal Brown bears and Grizzly bears are classified as the same species even though there are notable differences between them. Kodiak Brown Bears are classified as a distinct subspecies from those on the mainland because they have been isolated from the other bears since the last ice age. Kodiak bears have almost an unlimited amount of Salmon to feed on. This not only makes these bears huge but gives Kodiak one of the highest concentration of Brown Bears in the World.

We conduct varied types of hunts in different areas. Every hunt is custom tailored to the hunters needs and physical capabilities. It is important that you book well in advance openings are very limited. The access to these remote areas is by float plane ,boat, or six wheeler side by side.

In some areas we hunt primarily by boat, glassing for bears found on the beaches and hillsides. This is the least physical, but still one must be able to climb up steep hillsides to stalk bears. In some areas we base out of cabins or comfortable tents with heaters, stoves and cots, or we may use spike camps and backpack into areas to glass from spotting knobs for bears. I believe this is the most effective way to hunt these Kodiak bears. Being patient, sitting on high spotting knobs, looking over miles of beautiful bear country using our binoculars and spotting scope, we will glass the area hours on end until we find your bear. This method is much more successful than tramping around the area as you would scent the area and chase the bears out.

The bear population is at an all time high! These are the good ole days for hunting Kodiak Brown

A Kodiak bear hunt overview:

Traditionally, Kodiak Natives (Alutiiqs) hunted Kodiak brown bears for food, clothing and tools. Kodiak brown bear heads were usually left in the field as a sign of respect to the spirit of the Kodiak bears.

Today hunters harvest about 180 Kodiak brown bears each year under tightly controlled regulations. Hunters who are not residents of Alaska must hire a professional guide. Over 70% of the Kodiak brown bears killed by hunters are males. Alaska brown bear hunting on Kodiak is a dream of big game hunters worldwide. Kodiak Guide Service specialises in Kodiak brown bear hunts and Alaska big game hunting adventures.

Kodiak Brown Bear hunt with a Master Guide Mike Horstman is an experience of a lifetime! Mike Horstman has exclusive guide use areas. Hunts Itinerary

Base Camp – Once hunters arrive in Alaska, they will be put up in a privately owned lodge, where hunters will be provided with a hot meal and shown to one of the multiple guest cabins where they can store personal items. – Here we will organize hunters gear, fire rifles if necessary, and ensure all paperwork, licenses, tags, etc. are in place before heading into the field to begin the hunt. – Depending on weather conditions and arrival times, hunters may then depart directly to spike camp, or spend the night at the lodge Licenses and Tags – Hunters should purchase their hunting licenses and required tags online well in advance of their arrival. These can be purchased from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and will be mailed directly to hunters homes prior to their trip. Please coordinate with me to ensure proper hunting licenses and tags are secured well before your trip date. All information concerning that is here : http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/ Please fill up the licence here and send it ot me : http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=license.main Spike Camp – Spike camps consist of high quality tents known as “Bomb Shelters” designed specifically for use in Alaska’s harsh weather conditions. These tents are equipped with cots, propane cookware/heaters, and plenty of food and fuel for the hunt. Hunters should bring their own sleeping bag and pad, synthetic sleeping bags are recommended. – Rafts are available for use, and depending on the hunt location and weather conditions at the time of the hunt, as well as hunter preference, a float style hunt can be conducted. Backpack style hunts are also an option, depending on hunter preference and fitness level. – Sheep hunts are almost exclusively backpack hunts. Spike camps will consist of two or three man tents with freeze dried food, and lightweight gear and cookware. Hunters should pack minimal gear and plan to carry all personal items, clothing, and hunting gear. – Spike camps will be in place and attended before the hunters arrive at base camp. Hunters will be loaded into light aircraft and flown to the hunting location, which may be anywhere from a 15 minute to a one hour flight away. – Any special needs or dietary considerations should be arranged with me prior to the hunt to ensure a comfortable camp experience. – All guides will be equipped with a satellite telephone or comparable communication equipment, and assistance is always a phone call away. Once an animal is harvested, the guide will notify myself or camp staff to retrieve the animal as soon as possible. – Safety is always my first priority, and inclement weather can cause delays in small aircraft flights, but I will be available for assistance with an aircraft standing by at all times during the hunt. Hunting Style and Weather – Hunting style is all spot and stalk method, and hunters should come prepared to spend long days on the spotting hill glassing for trophy animals. Good rain gear and optics are top priority on this hunt. – Weather during the months of August and September can vary greatly as this time of year marks the changing of the seasons in the Arctic. Hunters should be prepared for a wide range of weather conditions, including cold and wet conditions. Temperatures can range from 25 to 60 °F, and can bring rain, wind, and even snow. Trophy Care, Export, and Departure – Trophies will be transported from the field, back to the base camp by myself and camp staff. There they will be cared for and prepared for shipment. Arrangements will then be made to ship trophies to a trophy exportation company in Anchorage, Alaska. From here hunters will be contacted directly by the export company to arrange transporting their trophies to a taxidermist of their choice. – After returning to the base camp, hunters will be made comfortable and will be able to relax and regale camp staff with tales of the hunt while their departure arrangements are changed as necessary.

State of Alaska License & Tag Fee

License and tag fees are in addition to the cost of the hunt and fees are paid directly to the State of Alaska prior to arrival. Licenses and tags are purchased online at www.adfg.alaska.gov and shipped to hunters at their home address. Please note that a Big Game Locking Tag can be used on a species of equal or lesser value, e.g. a Brown/Grizzly tag can be used on a Moose but not visa versa. In many cases, a free harvest ticket will also be required to accompany your locking tags, I will aid you in selecting the correct tags and harvest tickets for your hunt. Brown bear, Grizzly bear license fee is $1000 NonResident and $1300 NonResident Alien

Kodiak bear general information

Kodiak bears live exclusively on the islands in the Kodiak Archipelago and have been isolated from other bears for about 12,000 years. Kodiak bear is the largest bears in the world. Kodiak bears become sexually mature at age 5 and can continue to produce cubs throughout their lives.

Kodiak bears do not defend territories, but they do have traditional areas that they use each year. Because of the rich variety of foods available on Kodiak, bears here have some of the smallest home ranges of any brown bear population.

Kodiak bears are serially monogamous, having one partner at a time, staying together for a couple days or a couple weeks.

Kodiak Island, Alaska Brown Bear Hunts

Guided hunts in the kodiak national wildlife refuge, offered by registered “alaskan bear hunting guide” joey klutsch.

Our Kodiak Brown Bear hunts, (Ursus arctos middendorffi), take place on Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge lands where we have a sole guide use area in Barling and Three Saints Bay area. We are the only ones permitted to guide hunters in this guide use area. We are permitted 3 hunters every spring and 3 hunters every fall. Most of the Kodiak Brown Bears we harvest are in the 9 to 9 ½ foot range, and there is certainly good possibilities to find bears that are 10 foot or better. Kodiak Island has consistently produced some of the largest Brown Bears on earth, with skull sizes that are at the very top of Boone and Crocket Record Books. Over the years we have taken many B&C class bears. Kodiak Island supports very healthy populations of these amazing animals. Hunting Kodiak Brown Bear is certainly the pinnacle of North American Hunting, and one of the premier big game species in the world.

Our Kodiak Brown Bear hunts, like ALL the hunts we do, are completely fair chase. Hunting brown bear is all spot and stalk. Our brown bear season on Kodiak Island takes place every spring April 20 – May 5 and every fall October 25 – November 8. Our hunts are 15 hunting days – the full duration of your permit. Having a full 15 days to hunt allows us to be very selective with the bears we harvest, going after the oldest age class’s largest boars. Our hunts are guided with 1 guide and 1 hunter, oftentimes 2 guides and 1 hunter.

Your Kodiak brown bear hunt begins with you arriving on Kodiak Island. We will meet you at the airport, take you to get your Brown Bear Permit, and any other paperwork you need. We then take you to one of the sporting goods stores to purchase any other gear you need. We usually stay the night in Kodiak at a local hotel and fly to camp the next day. Once in camp, we will orient you and you will be paired up with a guide, and often a second guide as well. Located only 100 yards or so from the sea, our main camp consists of traditional Kodiak style double-walled tents and Weatherport tents, all of which have diesel or propane heaters, generated electricity, and comfortable bunks. This camp is very comfortable and we serve top-notch food, much of it fresh caught from the sea!

We access our sizable hunt area using 18 – 24 foot ocean skiffs, as well as a small jet boat for accessing small creeks, and a zodiac raft. Each morning we get up early, eat a nice breakfast and utilize boats to get to one of the various bays of the area, where we will go to shore and hike to a glassing hill. Hunting is also superb just a short walk from the main camp. Often times we will see bears from the boats as we cruise to the various bays, and if the situation is right, we are able to put to shore and do a stalk. More frequently we put ashore in one of the bays and climb up on a hill or other high observation point and glass forbears for the day. Once the correct bear is located, we plan a stalk or if the situation is right, wait to ambush him. Large male bears are extremely intelligent and can be very difficult to get close to. They have an amazing sense of smell, good eyes, and good hearing. There are many variables that go into planning a successful stalk and patience is key to making it work out. Like all hunts, bear hunting especially takes great patience and a willingness to work hard in all weather. The hunter must be willing to spend countless hours scouring the countryside with his guide in difficult weather conditions.

At night we come back to the main camp, usually arriving after dark to eat a good meal and rest up for the next day. We also have the option to deploy satellite spike camps in the different bays or valleys, camping in comfortable 4 men Bombshelter tents with cots and portable heaters if necessary. This can offer a huge advantage over just using the boat, especially if you know there is a large bear in an area, or if you want to access other parts of the area that do not lend themselves to boat access. It gives us additional options, and along with using the boats, helps us give you the best chance at taking a bear. You have your own tent for sleeping and your guide will have his own tent.

We utilize the same camps and hunting areas for spring bear hunting that we do in the fall. The primary difference between spring and fall hunts is that in the spring we are watching for bears coming out of dens, looking for tracks in the snow, and watching for boars (male bears) traveling in search of sows (female bears) to breed with. Often times bears will be on the beach eating kelp and other carrion that washes up. There is also much more daylight in the spring. During the fall, bears are more concentrated on the creeks and streams, feeding on salmon, and eating roots and berries, preparing for denning. The bear’s main concern in the fall is getting fat enough to survive winter, whereas in the spring their main goal is breeding. Our success rates on large bears are equal during both seasons.

The experience of taking a large brown bear is unlike any other. The beauty of Kodiak with its amazing marine life, including whales of all types, porpoises, seals and sea lions, crystal clear blue water birdlife, all of which can be seen on a daily basis, will leave a lasting impression. A hunter who is dedicated and willing to accept the challenge of hunting this animal will always rank the brown bear on top of his/her list of hunting experiences.

Afognak Wilderness Lodge

Kodiak Brown Bear Hunting

Happy hunters are successful hunters!

The Kodiak Brown Bear

Kodiak Brown Bear are the world’s largest carnivore due to the almost unlimited volume of salmon to feed on and have long had the respect of seasoned international hunters. There are high volumes of large Kodiak Brown Bear throughout Afognak Island’s lush habitat.

“Fair Chase” is the hunting-style throughout Alaska so hunters need to be in good shape for a confident advantage. We do use warm comfortable cabin-cruisers to spot a large portion of the wildlife so those hunters who aren’t as rugged as they once were also do very well on our hunts. This adds to the adventure as much more wildlife (including assorted marine-mammals) is seen, compared to sitting/glassing/hiking on a grassy hillside much of a day.

Your Hunting Guides

Your eagle-eye guides, who’ve lived in the heart of this lush wilderness year-round for the past 2 – 4 decades, know every nook & cranny. They’ve provided many a thrilling hunt for both rifle and bow hunters, with many repeat & referred hunters who barely need an excuse to return.

Hunters just need to bring their weapon of choice, extra clothes, quality optics, personal items and a good attitude. We provide everything else including a 90% success-rate, spanning nearly 6 decades on north Afognak Island. For foreign hunters, we provide gratis rifles during your hunt to avoid customs and airlines hassle.

By law, all bear hunters must be guided. We take no more than 2 bear hunting parties at once, each with a separate guide & cabin cruiser, except Party Hunts, who prefer to hunt together.  There are 4 Spring & 3 Fall 10-day guided hunts. Also, by law, no flying & hunting are allowed on same day so you must arrive one day prior to your first hunting day.

Kodiak Brown Bear Hunting

6/10 day, guided bear hunting trips, brown bear hunting.

Brown Bear Hunting trips on Kodiak, Alaska take place in the spring and in the fall. All hunts are fully guided, one on one, and trips average 10 to 12 days in length. During the spring hunts (April to mid-May), Kodiak Brown Bears are emerging from hibernation and their hides are in prime condition. Weather is unpredictable, with temperatures ranging from 20 degrees to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. It is common to spot and stalk a Kodiak Brown Bear above the snow level, which can start at 1,000 feet.

The fall Bear Hunting trips (Oct 25 – Nov 30) find cooler weather, 15 degrees to 45 degrees Fahrenheit, and most Brown Bears have returned to higher elevation after spending the summer months feeding along salmon streams.

Because we have been living and hunting Kodiak and the surrounding islands exclusively for nearly 30 years, we know the most productive areas. We carefully select the three guide use areas that are best for your Kodiak Island Hunt.

Hunting guests looking for the trophy of a lifetime benefit from our local knowledge, acute understanding of the game, our familiarity with the areas we are hunting, and our sense of timing (the most crucial component to a successful excursion).

Combine these attributes with our strong desire to provide every client we guide into the field the highest quality outdoor experience on a big game hunt, fishing trip , or wingshooting excursion, and you have a surefire recipe for success!
