What Is a Roadshow?

A roadshow is a series of presentations made in various locations leading up to an initial public offering (IPO). The roadshow is a sales pitch or promotion made by the underwriting firm and a company's management team to potential investors before going public. Roadshows generally take place in major cities and are meant to drum up interest in the upcoming offer. Potential investors are introduced to the company, its history, and its key personnel.

  • A roadshow is a series of presentations made in various locations leading up to an initial public offering.
  • The roadshow is a sales pitch to potential investors by the underwriting firm and a company's executive management team.
  • Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba's roadshow contributed to the overwhelming enthusiasm surrounding the company's IPO.

Understanding Roadshows

When a company decides to go public , the members of the investment firm responsible to underwrite or issue the IPO travel around the country in a roadshow to present the investment opportunity to potential investors. Most roadshows include stops in major cities like Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City.

A successful roadshow is often critical to the success of the IPO. The goal of the roadshow is to generate excitement about the company and its IPO. By traveling to different cities, underwriters introduce the IPO to institutional investors , analysts, fund managers , and hedge funds to interest them in the security. The roadshow also provides an opportunity for the underwriters to introduce the company's management and for investors to hear management's vision and goals for the company.

The goal of the roadshow is to generate enthusiasm surrounding the company's upcoming IPO, which means the success of the IPO depends on a successful roadshow.

Roadshow events may attract hundreds of prospective buyers interested in learning more about the offering in a face-to-face setting and online. Events may include multimedia presentations and question-and-answer sessions . Many companies may hold smaller, private meetings in the months and weeks leading up to the IPO, while the majority livestream some of their events to those who can't attend. Some of the topics covered during a roadshow include the company’s history and any future plans. Other information may include:

  • A video or digital media presentation
  • Meeting the executive management
  • The unique value proposition of the company
  • Earnings and financial performance
  • Prior sales growth with projections and forecasts
  • The investment opportunity and growth potential
  • IPO stock price target

The roadshow is essential to the IPO since it provides a forum where the company can communicate directly with potential investors to address any concerns or highlight successes. The underwriters also use information gathered from investors to complete the book-building process, which involves gathering prices potential investors are willing to pay for the offering.

Once a roadshow is complete, the final prospectus is created and distributed to potential investors. This prospectus is also filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). An initial price for the offering is set based on the information gathered during the book-building process, and the IPO date is solidified.

Special Considerations

Not all roadshows involve an IPO. In fact, there are cases where companies travel across the country to talk to investors even when they aren't going public. These are called non-deal roadshows (NDRs). These roadshows occur when executives hold discussions with current and potential investors, but no equity or debt security is offered. NDRs are carried out to provide public information to investors, including updates on the company's existing business and vision for the future. NDRs involve meeting with key investors to keep them updated on how the company is performing.

Example of a Roadshow

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group (BABA) posted the largest IPO ever by raising $25 billion in 2014 while the underwriters involved took home $300 million. The IPO was so successful that the stock price surged 38% in its debut. But enthusiasm for the IPO began well before the stock began trading. The roadshow included the financial numbers but also a video history of the company narrated by co-founder and Chair Jack Ma .

The roadshow was such a success with investors that it's likely the reason why the IPO price range was increased to $66 to $68 from the earlier published $60 to $66 range. Although the increase in the price range may not appear to be impressive, it's important to remember that the company sold over 300 million shares during its IPO.

Why Are Event Roadshows Beneficial?

Event roadshow ideas, key takeaways: planning your event roadshow, 10 visionary event roadshow examples.

Avatar

Looking to take your conference to multiple territories this year? Check out these 10 incredible event roadshow ideas with real examples you can use to supercharge your traveling get-together.

Event roadshows are growing in popularity in 2019. Why shouldn’t they be? They’re amazing event marketing tools. In this article, we’ll explore what an event roadshow is and why it can be so beneficial for your company. Then we’ll share 10 visionary event roadshow examples so that you can begin using this tactic to better promote your brand.

Sound like a plan? Then let’s dive in and get started!

What’s an Event Roadshow?

Event roadshows are identical gatherings that happen sequentially in multiple cities around the world. When done right, they can produce amazing event engagement .

Think of your favorite band. Once the group has recorded a new album, they generally pack up their gear and go on a world tour, traveling from city to city playing their new songs for fans.

Event roadshows operate on a similar concept. They allow companies to take their brand and message out into the world and meet both customers and prospects face to face beyond their normal territory. This event strategy gives brands the opportunity to interact with folks they might not have been able to otherwise due to the travel restrictions of their attendees.

There are different kinds of roadshow event types . For example, some companies simply take specific pieces of content from larger, mainstay events and host small gatherings throughout the year. Other times, brands produce a complete, stand-alone event series that’s held in multiple cities. The route your business goes down for its event roadshows will depend on the resources at your disposal.

Event roadshows have numerous benefits. First and foremost, they eliminate the geography hurdle (or at least reduce it) for many potential attendees.

What if your customers in New York want to attend your West Coast events but can’t afford the airfare? A roadshow event series that also hosts gatherings in, say, Austin, Texas, and Boston, Massachusetts gives these folks much more viable opportunities to attend. And, once they’re in the seats at one of your get-togethers, you can shower them with your brand message and market your company’s products and/or services to them.

Sure, one could argue that an online event can produce the same result because any virtual attendee who is interested has access to it. And it’s a much easier planning process for the hosting company. And to that we say, you’re right.

Virtual events are a wonderful strategy. If that’s the tactic that fits your company best, go for it. But there’s still something special about humans meeting other humans face to face, in the flesh. You just can’t get that with online-only gatherings and remote attendees.

Looking to take your show on the road and need a few corporate event ideas ? We’ve got you covered! These 10 event roadshow ideas will provide plenty of inspiration for your next mobile conference.

1. Nail Your Speaker Lineup

Yext - Event Roadshow Examples

Yext is a Software as a Service (SaaS) company that allows its users to control their company’s brand experience across the internet. These days they’re known in the events community for their two flagship conferences: Onward and Explore. Both are fantastic gatherings. But we want to focus on a roadshow series the software provider hosted a few years ago.

In May and June 2017, Yext put on the Yext on Tour event series. The conferences were held in five different cities — Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, and London — and discussed topics like voice search, digital assistants, and how customers interact with businesses using these technologies.

One thing this event series did extremely well was curate a roster of great speakers. First, they had their standard speakers that traveled to each location and delivered a similar keynote to the crowds at each stop. This allowed Yext to plan much of their conference content just once, then deliver it to different audiences in each city.

But not every stop was exactly the same. Yext also did a great job of bringing in unique speakers for each location as well. This made each individual event feel fresh and exciting.

2. Go Where Your Audience Is

Payoneer Forum - Event Roadshow Ideas

The Payoneer Forum is a truly worldwide roadshow event. In 2018, the company hosted conferences in 13 different countries on 3 different continents — which makes sense. Payoneer, a cross-border payment platform, has a global customer base.

Where are your customers? While you may not yet have the resources to bring your roadshow to multiple countries like Payoneer, it’s important to remember that the cities you do travel to should be ones where your brand has a strong presence. Or, at the very least, where your industry, in general, has a solid foothold.

For example, a tech company may decide to make one of their roadshow stops San Francisco, CA, even if they don’t do much business in that region. The fact that San Fran is the tech capital of the world may be reason enough to select the city.

3. Make Use of Event Sponsorship

Let’s face it, while a roadshow series does present enormous growth potential for your company, it’s also a huge commitment and a ton of work. Not every brand has the resources to pull off something of this magnitude. Or do they?

Your roadshow series doesn’t necessarily need to be completely planned and executed by your company. Why not take advantage of event sponsorship opportunities like Infosys ? Throughout the year, the digital services and consulting organization sponsors a wide range of different conferences in their field. Because of this, Infosys gets to host a booth at each gathering.

This tactic may not put your company front and center at each conference you attend. But it will still give you the chance to interface with your target market, show them your offerings, and promote your brand. It’s also much a much cheaper and less stress-filled strategy.

4. Let Your Products Take Center Stage

IBM, the behemoth company that has helped lead the technological revolution for the past century hosts their annual IBM Informix Roadshow in many cities around the world. Some of their 2019 stops include New York City, Prague, and Lima.

Unlike other roadshow events, these conferences are entirely devoid of marketing hype. They’re completely about the Informix software – event-goers learn how to better use the tool for their own businesses.

Why not take the same approach with your roadshow? Let your products take center stage at your event and simply teach attendees how to use them properly. This tactic has multiple benefits. First, it will educate your current user base. The more adept they are at using your products, the more they’ll use them. And second, once they use and love your company’s offerings on a regular basis, they’ll be more inclined to buy future products as well.

5. Make Your Event Complimentary

Adaptive Insights - Event Roadshow Ideas

If the goal of your roadshow event is to bring people together and promote your brand to your target market (rather than simply making money from producing a conference), then you should definitely consider making your event free.

That’s what Adaptive Insights does for their Executive Finance gatherings. Throughout the year, the business software company hosts both breakfast and lunch meetings for financial teams in different cities across the U.S. and Canada. At each gathering, finance professionals are able to meet with their colleagues, learn the latest industry trends, and see the Adaptive Insights products in action.

Pro Tip: Don’t just make your event free, offer free food and beverages too. While some folks may be willing to pass up a complimentary work get-together, not many will decline the opportunity to dine free of charge. Whatever it takes to get them through the door, right?

6. Seek Financial Backing

Patreon - Event Roadshow Ideas

As we’ve alluded to, coordinating a roadshow series is an expensive affair. You’ll need to hire multiple people to plan and run each event, pay for their travel to each location, rent multiple venues, and more. Fortunately, there’s a tried and true method for offsetting these costs: financial backing.

Financial backing can come in a variety of forms. The most common is via event sponsorship. Not only will this method give you the finances you need to host amazing get-togethers, but it will also lend your event credibility. It shows potential attendees that other players in the industry believe in your event.

Patreon is a fundraising platform your company can use to offset event roadshow expenses. If you’re not familiar, Patreon is a platform that allows creators to connect with their fans and receive revenue for their projects. Your brand could build up a Patreon through a high number of small sponsorships from followers to help raise funds for your roadshow series.

7. Go Digital

Axonify - Event Roadshow Ideas

We know, we know. Earlier we said that a roadshow series is great because it puts humans together — something you just can’t get with digital events. But what if digital gatherings are the only ones your organization can pull off? Then be like Axonify , a microlearning platform for frontline employees, and take your event series to the internet.

What’s great about Axonify’s digital events is that each one is completely unique. They don’t simply recycle webinars. Every online gathering is live, delivered at the same time every two weeks, and covers topics their audience is interested in. This strategy gives remote attendees a reason to tune in now rather than later. After all, they won’t get the same experience if they wait. It also makes each of their events feel unique and special.

8. Tackle Multiple Topics and Audiences

Source: YouTube

If you work for or own a medium to large size company, you likely cater to many different audience types and help them with a variety of tasks. This should definitely be taken into consideration when planning out event roadshow ideas.

Take Forbes for example. The global media company has a massive fanbase and regularly educates their audience on many different topics. A single event schedule that only caters to a specific subset of their audience would alienate a lot of people.

So instead, Forbes hosts many gatherings around the world based on each of the topics they cover on their website. The roadshow series is called Forbes Live . They have conferences dedicated to philanthropy, marketing, healthcare, and more. They also have gatherings exclusively for women.

How can your company cater to its entire target market? Perhaps your roadshow events will have multiple tracks or separate sessions dedicated to niche topics. Or maybe you’ll plan individual events for specific audience segments. The choice is up to you and largely depends on the resources at your disposal. But any time you can personalize the event experience, it’s worth doing.

9. Offer Different Ticket Types

Mulesoft Connect - Event Roadshow Ideas

Mulesoft CONNECT is a conference that teaches attendees how to better use the company’s integration software. In 2019, the roadshow series will visit six cities across the globe: Atlanta, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Sydney, and London.

One strategy Mulesoft uses that we love is multiple ticket types . Attendees are given the opportunity to buy early bird tickets at a reduced rate or purchase them at a later date for the full price. This is a great strategy that you can use to help build momentum for your roadshow series.

10. Pick the Right Venue

Tesla - Event Roadshow Ideas

Tesla, the automaker, offers many charging workshops across the U.S. These hour-long micro events teach attendees about the ease of electric car ownership and educate them on Tesla’s growing infrastructure of charging stations.

Since each get-together is hosted in a Tesla dealership, attendees spend the entire time staring at beautiful cars and learning how they work. They also have the opportunity to test drive the autos after the presentation has concluded. Brilliant!

You should pay attention to where you host your roadshow events too. An amazing venue can really help your event stick in the minds of your attendees. If you choose the right place, you may be able to boost sales as well, just like Tesla.

Event roadshows are a fantastic way for your organization to get in front of its target market. If you’re ready to start planning your own event series, keep these key takeaways in mind:

  • Roadshows are great because they allow humans to meet face to face. Make sure your series visits the cities that your audience lives near or frequents often.
  • Face to face interaction is great but if digital meetings are your only option, don’t shy away from an online roadshow. Just do what you can to ensure audience engagement.
  • Make sure you get the financial details right. Whether that means offering complimentary gatherings or seeking funding via sponsors or Patreon, the numbers have to make sense for your roadshow.
  • Lastly, nail the details. Speakers, venue, ticket type, and discussion topics all play a major role in whether your roadshow is successful or not.

Event planning is a complicated business. Roadshows only add to the crazy. But if you’re set on using this strategy for your B2C or B2B event marketing efforts, we applaud you! Just remember to use event software . It will make the entire process much easier and enjoyable.

A blond woman with red lipstick wears an elaborate outfit that is half black and half white.

At 70, Cyndi Lauper Has Nothing Left to Prove

She’s plotting a farewell tour. She’s starring in a documentary about her life. And she could only ever be herself.

One Friday afternoon in May, Cyndi Lauper stepped out of her Upper West Side apartment building and into the streets of New York City. She wore glitter-encrusted glasses, sneakers with rainbow soles and a stack of beaded bracelets on each arm. A rice-paper parasol swung in her hand. As she walked, she examined the crowds and remarked when glints of interest caught her eye.

“Of course, up here it’s fashion hell,” she allowed of her tony neighborhood. And yet, every few blocks she rubbernecked at another woman’s look, her famous New Yawk accent lifting and tumbling in pleasure at what she saw:

“Look at these dames, how cute are they?”

“Did you love those pants? I kind of loved those pants.”

“Look at this lady,” she said, stepping off the curb and clocking a passerby. The woman moved nimbly, tomato-red streak in her silver hair, body draped in shades of fuchsia and cherry as she pushed the gleaming metal frame of a walker. “Fabulous,” Lauper exclaimed. “Come on!”

At 70, the pop icon and social justice activist isn’t just charging back into the streets. On Monday, Lauper announced her final tour, the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour, which will have her headlining arenas across North America from late October to early December. And “Let the Canary Sing,” a documentary about her life and career that premiered at the Tribeca Festival last year, is streaming on Paramount+.

Lauper has not staged a major tour — “a proper tour, that’s mine” — in over a decade. But now her window of opportunity is closing, so she’s leaping through it. “I don’t think I can perform the way I want to in a couple of years,” she said. “I want to be strong.”

A blond woman in red lipstick rests her chin on the mirrored top of a table.

And until recently, when she finally agreed to sit for the director Alison Ellwood, she could not envision committing her life story to film. “I wasn’t going to do a documentary because I’m not dead,” she said. More to the point, she did not feel particularly misunderstood. From the moment she danced across the city in the 1983 video for “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” she felt that she had articulated precisely what she wanted to say.

“Everything I wanted them to understand was in that video,” she said of her fans. She has a lot of people who get her: The clip has been viewed on YouTube more than one billion times. Forty years later, she holds it up as a thesis, the key to decoding her artistic perspective and understanding everything that followed. After all, “You never have to wonder where a New Yorker stands,” she said. “They’ll tell you, straight up.”

CYNDI LAUPER, BORN in Brooklyn, raised in Queens, bopped around the house to the Beatles’ songs, her older sister, Elen, singing McCartney’s parts and Lauper taking Lennon’s. It was her earliest lesson in harmony and song structure. But when she left home at 17, it was with a copy of Yoko Ono’s feminist conceptual art book “Grapefruit” in her hands.

Ono taught her that “you can create art in your head, and then you can view things differently,” Lauper told me. This attitude served her well as she tried (and often failed) to work as a painter, a shoe saleswoman, a racetrack hot walker, an IHOP waitress, a gal Friday at Simon & Schuster and the singer in a cover band.

Singing other people’s music in Long Island clubs and dive bars, Lauper struggled to find her place. She tried to channel Janis Joplin, but “I was stuck inside her body, and she didn’t like it, and I didn’t like it,” she said. She tried to sound like Gene Pitney, and “it came out sounding like Ethel Merman.” After a while, “You start to feel that you’re just not good enough.”

But really, she was just no good at being anyone other than Cyndi Lauper. When she started writing and arranging songs for herself, “I told the stories that I knew about the women that I knew,” she said. “About my mom, my aunt, my grandmother.” They guided her back to the rhythms of her own life, even if, in the beginning, few were interested in listening. “My first concert was to 14 people,” she said, “and I did the encore, OK?”

The documentary’s title is a line ripped from a real-life courtroom drama: Early on, Lauper’s career got entangled in the ambitions of an ex-manager, who sued her to retain control of her music. She sank into bankruptcy trying to escape him. When the judge sided with Lauper, he banged the gavel and said: “Let the canary sing.”

Once freed, Lauper connected with Robert Hazard, who had written a track called “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” He’d arranged it as a rock song from a man’s perspective — the girls were the ones he imagined sleeping with — and Lauper had some edits. She recast it as a gleeful public announcement, calling out a sexist double standard (“Oh mama dear, we’re not the fortunate ones”) while claiming liberation from the workplace, the home and the patriarchy. And she rearranged the notes, pitching her voice so high that it could not be ignored. “I sang that high because I was trumpeting an idea,” she said.

And then there was the video. “That video was what you call ‘inclusive’ nowadays, and that was the most important thing,” Lauper said. In addition to the Italian American pro wrestler Lou Albano, Lauper featured her mother, her lawyer, her manager, a crop of record-company secretaries, and a racially diverse group of singers and dancers. “I was sick of the segregation” of the music industry, she said. “It’s people together that create a style.”

MTV was still in its infancy in 1983, and it was fortuitous that Lauper’s debut album, “She’s So Unusual,” came out just as the network was ascending. She saw her public image as a visual art form. Her makeup artist was a painter, and her stylist was a vintage buyer.

“People sometimes get the wrong idea that it was very thrown together,” Laura Wills, the founder of the vintage shop Screaming Mimi’s, said of the singer’s style. “People just didn’t look like that.” In the early ’80s, Lauper worked for Wills, often bartering her labor for clothes. When her career took off, Wills started styling her, and the pair often constructed Lauper’s outfits as if sliding chips across a poker table, as in, “I’ll see your polka-dot socks and striped capris, and I’ll raise you a plaid top,” Wills said. “I’ll see your polka-dot socks, striped capris and plaid top, and I’ll raise you a paisley hat.”

Lauper seemed to shoot to fame as a fully formed feminist icon. She refused to tell interviewers her age (“I’m not a car,” she said), and she insisted that they recognize the politics behind her aesthetic choices. “I wore the corset to undo the power of the binding of women,” she told the press. She graced the cover of Ms. Magazine and recorded the 1986 song “True Colors,” which resonated with her in the wake of a friend’s death from AIDS.

“I know that I probably lost business because I talked about AIDS a lot,” she said, but figured “I ought to stand up like any good Italian and stick up for my family, you know?” In 2008, she founded True Colors United to help combat homelessness among L.G.B.T.Q. youth. And in 2022, she created the Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights fund to support abortion access and other reproductive justice movements.

In 1985, Lauper won the best new artist Grammy after the release of “She’s So Unusual.” The album — and songs like “Time After Time” and “All Through the Night” — broke records. But something odd was happening. She looked around and saw versions of herself everywhere. “When I first became famous, I felt like the whole world just kind of went” — here Lauper made a sharp slurping noise — “and sucked everything up. The jewelry, the color, the corsets on the outside, the whole thing. And then used it. Spit it out. Next!”

Lauper was accused of being a manufactured package. “No, it was me. That’s how I dressed. That’s how I looked. That was my community,” she said. “I have a brain.”

When Lauper got a call that a movie studio was adapting her big hit into a movie, she balked at its fluffy premise. “I guess it was about a couple of girls … trying to have fun,” she said. (Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt starred.) Lauper refused permission to use her song, so it featured Hazard’s version with other vocalists instead. “For me, it sucked,” she said. “You took my style. And it had nothing to do with me at all.”

In the ’80s, Lauper was compared so closely to other female musicians that it was implied there was not space for all of them. She was pitted against other women — mainly Madonna, who released her debut album the same year. On chat shows and in schoolyards (and even on the charity single “We Are the World” ), celebrities and fans were asked to choose one. “It was like apples and oranges,” Lauper told me. Or as she put it in Newsweek in 1985: “She’s just doing her thing. My thing happens to be different.” It was a shame, Lauper said: “I would have liked to have a friend.”

Though she fought her battles mainly alone, Lauper has inspired generations of women. Among her acolytes are Nicki Minaj, who in April brought her onstage in Brooklyn to duet on the song that samples her, “Pink Friday Girls.” When an interviewer asked the 26-year-old singer-songwriter Chappell Roan, “How does it feel to be called the Gen-Z Cyndi Lauper?” she replied, “I think Cyndi Lauper is the Gen-Z Cyndi Lauper.”

Lauper made 11 more albums after her debut — among them a blues record, a country record and a dance record. In the early 2000s, she walked over to Broadway, starring in “The Threepenny Opera” and writing the music and lyrics to the musical “Kinky Boots” after Harvey Fierstein, who wrote the book, tapped her for the gig. “There’s a small group of people I consider my children; she’s one of my daughters,” the actor and writer, who turns 72 this week, said. Fierstein told me that he had suspected Lauper’s talents were underused in rock, and he wanted to see what it was like for her to write a song that she would never sing herself.

“My favorite was a recording she made on her phone, in the beauty parlor, with her head in the dryer,” he said. (Lauper was often multitasking.) Her autoharp competed with the salon noise. “It’s really hard to sell a $10 million production on a recording of an autoharp song with a dryer background,” he said. “But that’s what we did.” Lauper won the Tony for best score, the first woman to win alone.

In an industry that requires the rapacious pursuit of the new and the cynical extraction of identity, Lauper was never willing to abandon herself. She had forged the revolutionary style, sang the totemic song. She inspired millions, billions, of fans to be themselves. Why should she have to change who she was?

AS LAUPER AND I traversed the Upper West Side, we ducked into an exhibition about the abstract artist Sonia Delaunay, passed the original Screaming Mimi’s location (now a dry cleaners), and wound back to her apartment, where she invited me up.

Past the doorman, past a cheetah-print doormat and a cheetah-print curtain, two little pugs named Lulu and Ping awaited Lauper’s return. She disappeared to arrange a plate of ginger cookies, the same kind Jackson Browne always sent her on Christmas, while her husband, the actor David Thornton, told me about their meet-cute on the set of the 1991 film “Off and Running.” She played a fake mermaid, he played a murderer. Off the set, he was struck instantly by her winning sense of humor.

“She’s the Rodney Dangerfield of rock ’n’ roll,” he said. As in, she is so funny that she does not always receive the respect she deserves. “I don’t think anybody has any idea how hard she works,” he said.

To prepare for the tour, she blasts the stereo in her apartment and dances and sings, vexing the pugs. She works with a vocal coach four days a week. And she trains like it’s a sport. Her weekly exercise routine includes physical therapy, weights, stretching, physical therapy, weights, yoga, more weights, yoga, aerobics, physical therapy, weights again. She’s been chomping on enormous salads that make her feel like a horse.

“But when you’re a singer, you have to be an athlete,” she said. “You can’t [expletive] around. When you’re 20, yeah. But when you get older? No.”

As the tour approaches, she’s been daydreaming about “all the crazy stuff I tried that didn’t work” in the long arc of her career. The butterfly-winged black dress that she was meant to reveal as she stepped out of a cocoon. The bit where she was supposed to change behind a backlit screen like an old cartoon character. A kind of mechanical skirt that resembled a globe, slowly spinning her around as she sang.

She’s not exactly sure what she’ll pull off this time. Whatever changes, one thing remains the same: “Who the hell I am is who the hell I am.”

Tree of Life exhibit sparks talk of guns and hate in Senate rotunda

The display commemorating the 2018 mass killing comes against the backdrop of rising hate crimes tied to the war in Gaza.

tourism road show

Jason and Andrea Fackler of Louisville arrived in Washington this week on summer vacation to show their three young children “how the country works,” including a tour of Capitol Hill.

But in the marble rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building on Wednesday, the Facklers encountered a somber reminder of one way in which the nation is broken — an exhibit marking the mass killing at the Tree of Life synagogue in 2018 in which an antisemitic gunman slaughtered 11 congregants.

Andrea, 39, pushing a stroller that her younger child was not using at that moment, moved her hand across a glass case containing a siddur — a Jewish prayer book — ripped by a bullet. Her 11-year-old daughter Kelsey took a look, too, before turning to read one of 18 panels narrating the attack and its aftermath.

“When do you expose them to this? Do I really want to spend time talking about the sadness of this?” said Jason Fackler, 39, pointing to Kelsey, 9-year-old Kennedy and 5-year old Kaden.

“There’s so much hatred going on in the world — this is like an everyday thing now,” he said. “It’s not just anti-Jewish or anti-this-or-that. We’re struggling to meet in the middle and see common ground on things. It just goes to the extreme, one way or the other.”

The exhibit, open to the public through Friday, comes two weeks before synagogue leaders break ground on a multiyear project in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh to create a new sanctuary and museum dedicated to telling the Tree of Life’s story to help combat antisemitism.

The traveling road show version in the nation’s capital represents the first, modest step toward doing so, placing the horrors of Oct. 27, 2018, directly in the center of political power — at a time when anti-Jewish attacks have spiked again, along with threats and violence against Muslims, amid the Israel-Gaza war.

The display, conceived by freelance museum designer Carlo Maggiora, is not overtly political. The panels that circle the rotunda floor recount in straightforward prose the shooting, the heroism of the first responders and the plans for the new synagogue.

Although Tree of Life leaders have preserved dozens of artifacts damaged in the attack, including bloodstained carpets and the wooden Torah ark punctured by bullets, the siddur was the only one included in the Senate exhibit. Another glass case contains mementos left at the synagogue by mourners, including embroidered prayer squares and a cross-stitch emblem bearing the words, “You will be remembered” with a gold Star of David.

Carole Zawatsky, chief executive of the Tree of Life organization overseeing the synagogue renovation, acknowledged that the context of the group’s work cannot be divorced from the broader political debate over the Middle East conflagration that began last October when Hamas militants killed about 1,200 Israelis, many of whom were attending a music festival, and took more than 200 hostages.

The point of bringing the display to Washington, she said, was not to cast blame, but rather to demonstrate solidarity with lawmakers in both parties.

“We don’t stand alone: This exhibit is here in the halls of the highest level of American government,” she said. “Antisemitism is not a Jewish problem, it’s an American problem. We see it all around us, coming from the right and coming from the left — coming from extremists on both sides.”

On Wednesday morning, visitors who wandered through the rotunda stopped to take in the display. Some read every panel, while others paused for a quick look before moving on. One woman posed for a photo in the middle of the room, without appearing to recognize the significance of the damaged prayer book in the case next to her.

Meagan Fuscaldo, who works for a health care company in Northern Virginia and was at the Russell building for a meeting with Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), said she didn’t recall the Tree of Life attack before looking at the exhibit.

“There’s so much happening in the world, certainly with antisemitism and gun control and so much more, so I love that we find ways to highlight and remind people what’s happening,” Fuscaldo said. “On one hand, I feel embarrassed that I didn’t remember, but then again, when you think about how many shootings we have in a year, how can I stay in-the-know about every single one?”

Steve Ashby, 64, director of the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, was holding a folder filled with papers for his meeting with lawmakers, but he took the time to read each of the 18 panels.

“I certainly remember reading about the massacre, but I’d lost track of the story,” he said. “Seeing the list of victims’ names on one of the posters, you just want to say a short prayer for them, and it reminds us we still have a lot of hate in the country.”

Lawmakers, he said, should “turn down some of the rhetoric and turn up some of the bipartisan cooperation to solve some of our problems. We can have political arguments about how to solve problems, that’s fine. But let’s not make it personal, and certainly let’s not blame groups of people.”

Organizers said the idea for the Senate display originated during conversations with Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) to secure a $1 million funding appropriation for an educational program that will be part of the Tree of Life’s new museum. It took months to work out details with the Senate Rules Committee and gain approval from the Architect of the Capitol, they said, including reviewing drafts of the language used on the display panels.

On Wednesday, Casey and Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) took separate tours of the exhibit. Fetterman has been a particularly vocal supporter of Israel , engendering political blowback from progressive activists who have denounced Israel’s military response, which has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians. Last week, Fetterman denounced his alma mater, Harvard University, for what he said was its failure to stand up against anti-Israeli protesters on campus.

Shortly after lunch, the senator arrived in the rotunda, where he was greeted by Zawatsky and others involved in the Tree of Life renewal project, including Scott Miller, a former historian at the U.S. Holocaust Museum, and Howard Fienberg, whose mother, Joyce Fienberg, was killed in the 2018 attack.

“No one would have wanted that tragedy, but the way you responded was a triumph,” Fetterman told them, citing a “convergence” between the attack on American Jews at the Tree of Life and on Israelis at the music festival last year.

Fetterman showed the group a replica bracelet from the festival that is intended to be worn as a symbolic demand for the release of the Israeli hostages. Zawatsky then guided the senator to the display case containing the prayer book.

“If we lose this, people someday would say this didn’t happen or that it wasn’t so bad,” she said. “So we’re saving everything.”

We brought a taxidermied raccoon to Antiques Roadshow

Nothing but a blue sheet covered the fossilized femur of a long-extinct wooly mammoth that came into Jay’s family about 10 years ago.

“Lately it's been sitting under the pool table, but I've been meaning to build a proper display case for it,” he said.

The femur is one of thousands of treasures taken to a tour stop for the long-running PBS show Antiques Roadshow at the Denver Botanic Gardens’ Chatfield Farms location in Littleton on Wednesday.

It was the Roadshow’s first stop in the Denver area in 15 years. Over 20,000 people applied for tickets, and only 4,000 got admitted by random lottery.

Crews filmed all day, and will eventually air the footage across three episodes that will premiere early next year.

By 10 a.m., hundreds of hopefuls were lined up at the event.

tourism road show

Some were looking for money, but many more looking for a story — about family heirlooms passed down by ancestors, weird items picked up at a thrift store or personal collections an owner spent decades building.

Many fashioned makeshift containers or carts to carry jewelry, art, furniture and countless other objects that have borne witness to centuries of American (and, in some cases, global) history.

To learn more about the process, Denverite brought two items to be appraised.

Those with tickets to Antiques Roadshow’s Littleton tour stop were invited to bring two items of their choosing to get appraised. PBS and WGBH Boston, the producers of the program, fly out dozens of volunteer appraisers, all with their own set of specialties.

With us is Rocky the Raccoon, a taxidermied raccoon that for some reason is sticking its paws into a box of Hot Tamales candies.

tourism road show

Colorado Public Radio climate editor Joe Wertz brought the taxidermied creature into the office last October.

Wertz told colleagues that he watched a box fall out the back of a truck, and when he picked it up, he found Rocky’s lifeless eyes staring back at him. After dressing him up in a tie, we set out to learn more about its market value.

The second is a mezuzah — a Hebrew prayer that is typically fixed to the doorpost of Jewish people’s homes — that Denverite reporter Rebecca Tauber inherited from her great-grandmother who immigrated from Poland in the 1920s. We wanted to learn more about its history and where it might have originated from.

tourism road show

After attendees are checked in, they’re sent to triage, where appraisers categorize each item and send people to specialized tents to get a full evaluation.

Both Rocky and the mezuzah were categorized as collectibles and directed to Travis Landry, an auctioneer from Rhode Island who specializes in all things pop culture.

Before Landry assessed our items, he began with a disclaimer, which he described as the ‘golden rule.’

“As we always like to say, the story and sentimental value is priceless,” he said.

Landry, who studied nuclear engineering before finding his way into the auctioneering business, said there’s no formal training to becoming a professional appraiser. He grew up going to auctions as a kid with his parents, and said it was his childhood dream to appraise items on Antiques Roadshow.

The oldest item he has ever appraised was a piece of an asteroid.

“The best thing is hands-on experience, getting in the trenches, buying, selling, going to auctions, feeling, touching, sniffing it, and just embodying the trade,” he said.

Landry started with Rocky the Raccoon — but stopped short of sniffing it.

tourism road show

“This looks like he just came out of the [Secret Life of Pets] movie or the zoo,” Landry said. “He looks alive and well. So [a] world of value at auction, because he is so unusual. I would say this is going to bring about $200 to $300 today.”

Landry explained that taxidermy has lost stock in the 21st century. Not many people care for stuffed animal corpses to be present in their lives anymore.

So while whoever commissioned the taxidermied, candy-loving raccoon likely paid several hundred dollars, maybe even up to $1,000, it isn’t likely to fetch that price in an auction or at a pawn shop.

tourism road show

The mezuzah was harder to pin down. The prayer case had little markings on it, with the most notable being a Hebrew letter inscribed. Without many clues about an item’s history, Landry said it’s difficult to ascertain much about it. But, he was able to make some educated guesses.

“When you look at how this is pressed and it's die cut, and this is embossed here, I would guess it's probably [made in] the United States,” Landry said. “I don't know if they had that really kind of industrial ‘oomph’ in Poland in 1920.”

With an understanding of the process, we set out to explore what others brought.

Just a couple tables away from Landry was Bill.

(Like all participants, Antiques Roadshow had instructed him to only give his first name for safety reasons — just in case something appraised is particularly valuable.)

Bill had brought his friend’s baseball, signed by every member of the 1968 World Series-winning Detroit Tigers. An appraiser helped Bill date the ball and assess the quality of the signatures, estimating that it could be worth between $2,500 and $5,000.

“It’s a true team signed ball, which is rare,” said Jasmani Francis, an appraiser from Arizona who specializes in sports memorabilia, before reciting baseball facts from memory.

tourism road show

One person used the opportunity to confirm that a pair of spears his father found in a barn in Iowa did indeed originate from Africa.

Some items, like a pair of carved wooden busts from Bali, looked exotic but were ultimately determined to be the 1930s version of tourism souvenirs.

Brian was waiting in line pushing a cart carrying two distinct items. The first was a bronze statue removed from the Paramount Theater in downtown Denver when his family owned it decades ago. The second item was a duo of spears of unknown origin that he bought from a woman off Craigslist.

“She said she thinks they're cursed, so she wanted someone to take 'em,” he said.

tourism road show

During his short time with the spears, he hasn’t seen any signs of a curse. The opposite, actually.

“I’ve had good things happen.”

Further back in the line, one participant, Lane, brought in dozens of emblems he took off abandoned cars in the 1960s and 1970s. His favorite is one belonging to the Ford Edsel, which was discontinued in 1960.

“I have no idea what they’re worth,” said Lane, who currently drives a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air. “I could identify cars when I was two [years old].”

For many, Antiques Roadshow stop in Denver provided a rare opportunity to connect with their ancestors and history.

Marsha Bemko has worked on Antiques Roadshow since season four was shot in 1999. She now works as the show’s executive producer.

While the antiques are the obvious centerpiece, she said the show has achieved its longevity because of the people who bring the items.

“I like that about Roadshow. It's not all about the antiques, it's about the people here too,” Bemko said.

tourism road show

Another joy of the show for Bemko is how everyone has their own collectibles and types of items they’re drawn to.

“Some of us like militaria. Some of us like paintings. I like diamonds,” she said. “So if I were going to see something that I would want that I can't have because it's theirs, it would be a huge honkin' diamond.”

Many of the attendees Denverite spoke to had no desire to sell their possessions — instead, many wanted to learn more about their items or feel closer to family.

Wanda came to the tour stop despite knowing the value of her possession: a vase her mom was gifted after she helped a tribal member of the Pueblo of Isleta in New Mexico baptize her baby.

“It was really more of just coming out here and being able to be a part of the Antiques Roadshow experience and then just being able to pass along my mom's story to somebody else and then share this story back with my mom and let her know this is what they told me about her pot,” she said.

tourism road show

Alice had brought a vase from East Asia that her grandparents were gifted during their wedding in 1921. She carried with her a note from her mother which explained how they came into ownership of the artifact.

“I think we really need to appreciate where we've come from and we need to keep that alive. And we do that by talking about it, hearing the stories,” she said.

Nicholas Lowry, a third-generation appraiser and auction house owner, specializes in antique posters, which he collects with his father.

Even though his entire life is dictated by antiquing, he still finds inspiration from the practice.

“Personally, it's my aesthetic, it’s the life I lead,” Lowry said, dressed in a custom vintage-style plaid suit complete with a twirled mustache and pocket watch. “I think anybody who doesn't like old stuff is wrong and mistaken … It's a gateway to another era. It's seeing things that don't exist anymore. It's stories that haven't been told in generations.”

tourism road show

Rebecca Tauber covers city council and transportation for Denverite. Before joining Colorado Public Radio, she worked at GBH News in Boston and KRBD in Ketchikan, Alaska. Rebecca grew up in Philly and graduated from Williams College. She loves journalism because it requires asking good questions and listening well.

You should email her with book recommendations and favorite restaurants, or if you ever want a freshly baked loaf of challah. News tips also welcome.

Music | Review: Acclaimed country act performs 1st Bay Area show in over 14 years

Brooks & dunn finally returned to shoreline amphitheatre.

Brooks & Dunn -- Kix Brooks, left, and Ronnie Dunn -- who performed at the All for the Hall concert benefitting the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Dec. 2023, brought their Reboot 2024 tour to the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View on June 7. (Jason Kempin/Getty Images archives)

“We are glad to be back in California,” he said. “We have had some of the greatest parties of our lives in this place.”

And Brooks and his longtime musical partner Ronnie Dunn would have yet another one as the platinum-plus-selling duo —  known as Brooks & Dunn — finally brought the Reboot Tour to Shoreline Amphitheatre for some rip-roaring fun on Friday night (June 7).

The approximately 12,000 fans in attendance acted like they’d been counting down the days for this event to happen — and, indeed, a goodly portion probably had been — as evidenced by the way they hooted and hollered, boot-scooted and, of course, boogied through one big hit after another during the 19-song set.

It was the first time that Brooks & Dunn performed in the Bay Area since 2010, which was the same year that the “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” duo originally called it quits on a career that was highlighted by an amazing 20 No. 1 country singles. Five years later, they’d regroup for a lengthy residency with the legendary Reba McEntire in Las Vegas, which nicely set the stage for a full-on reunion tour that was suppose to begin in 2020.

Then COVID hit, of course, which pushed back Brooks & Dunn’s Reboot Tour (and pretty much everything else entertainment related). Fast forward another four years and — well, you can understand why Bay Area fans were so excited to finally get their reunion with the Grammy-winning duo.

Backed by a rock-solid seven-piece band, Brooks & Dunn were in primetime ’90s-era form throughout the roughly 90-minute set. They wasted no time in getting the party started as they opened the show with one of their best — “Brand New Man” — the anthemic title track from the twosome’s landmark debut of 1991.

The 71-year-old Dunn, wearing mirrored sunglasses and a baseball cap on backwards, was in particularly good voice as he crooned through “Brand New Man,” “My Next Broken Heart” (from that same debut album) and “Red Dirt Road,” the title track from the duo’s 2003 album that resulted in one of the evening’s most passionate audience sing-alongs at Shoreline.

“‘Red Dirt Road’ is my favorite song that Ronnie and I ever wrote together,” said the 69-year-old Brooks, signing off on the crowd’s exuberant reaction to the power ballad.

Although not on the same level as a singer as Dunn, Brooks would also deliver a handful of highlights during the show, including a lovely version of the ballad “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone,” which was the sole selection of the night from 1994’s “Waitin’ on Sundown.”

Turning the corner on the midpoint of the set, Brooks & Dunn pushed down on the accelerator as they belted out such party favorites as “Hard Workin’ Man,” “Play Something Country” and “Rock My World (Little Country Girl).”

The highlight of the entire show came with “Believe,” which — with due respect to Brooks and others who might prefer “Red Dirt Road” (or something else) — is the finest song in the duo’s catalog. Dunn put his all into this glorious country-gospel number, leading the congregation of 12,000 as the striking lyrics unfolded:

“I raise my hands, bow my head / I’m findin’ more and more truth in the words written in red / They tell me that there’s more to life than just what I can see”

The group followed up that breathtaking moment with a sweet version of “My Maria” to close the main set, then returned to give the crowd exactly what it wanted — the line-dancing crossover smash “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” — during an encore that also included the patriotic hit “Only in America.”

1. “Brand New Man” 2. “Put a Girl in It” 3. “My Next Broken Heart” 4. “Mama Don’t Get Dressed Up for Nothing” 5. “We’ll Burn That Bridge” 6. “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone” 7. “Ain’t Nothing ‘Bout You” 8. “Red Dirt Road” 9. “Lost and Found” 10. “Hard Workin’ Man” 11. “Play Something Country” 12. “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” 13. “She Likes to Get Out of Town” 14. “Neon Moon” 15. “Rock My World (Little Country Girl)” 16. “Believe” 17. “My Maria” Encore: 18. “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” 19. “Only in America”
