Daryl Hall is a modern-day renaissance man, an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the star of his very own award-winning web series, Live from Daryl’s House, as well as a successful venue owner with “Daryl’s House,” a restored venue and live music space in Pawling, N.Y.

The Philadelphia soul man is still achieving career milestones more than four decades later, continuing to perform with his band to sold out venues everywhere.

It’s been quite a decade for Hall, including the opening of “Daryl’s House,” a combination world-class restaurant and performance venue, which he kicked off on October 31, 2014. The popular venue also serves as home base for his multi award-winning Live from Daryl’s House. The show, which began as a “light bulb” moment for Hall when he launched it in 2007 as a free webcast, has set the standard for artist-initiated projects. The groundbreaking series provides a mix of legends and the next generation of superstars. “Live From Daryl’s House” streams on Daryl Hall’s YouTube channel.

Previous episodes of Live From Daryl’s House have featured a diverse mix of veteran and new performers from rock, soul, country and R&B including rock legends Sammy Hagar, Joe Walsh, Cheap Trick, Tommy Shaw, Kenny Loggins, Todd Rundgren, Nick Lowe, Dave Stewart and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top; soul and R&B artists The O’Jays, Aaron Neville, Aloe Blacc, Kandace Springs, Elle King, Wyclef Jean, Smokey Robinson, Cee Lo Green, Booker T & The MGs, and Sharon Jones; big-league singer/songwriters such as Ben Folds, Rob Thomas, Jason Mraz, Gavin DeGraw, Goo Goo Dolls’ John Rzeznik and Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump; country artists such as Shelby Lynne; and has helped break new acts like Fitz & The Tantrums, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Neon Trees, Johnnyswim, Parachute and Anderson East. The latest episodes of the show feature Squeeze’s Glenn Tilbrook, Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr, Andy Grammer, Lisa Loeb, Robert Fripp, and Howard Jones.

Daryl Hall has come a long way, and he’s still got plenty of mileage left in a career that’s taken him from the streets of Philadelphia to the halls of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. The best is yet to come.

See you soon Detroit

Daryl Hall and Elvis Costello Endure Rainy Tour Opener: Video

Daryl Hall and Elvis Costello launched their tour together on Sunday, June 2, with a rain-soaked concert in Troutdale, Oregon.

Costello was the first main act to take the stage, greeted by devoted fans who wouldn't let a few inches of rain keep them away. Backed by his longtime band, the Imposters, the English singer rocked through a bevy of material from throughout his career.

Highlights included "Radio Radio," "Less Than Zero," Watching the Detectives" and the timeless tune "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding?" Costello closed his 16-song set with "Alison," the beloved track from his 1977 debut album My Aim Is True .

Daryl Hall Cuts Set Short Due to Rain

The rain continued coming down as Hall took the stage for his headlining performance. Despite waterlogged conditions, the acclaimed singer delivered an assortment of classic hits.

While fans may be disappointed at Hall & Oates ' public falling out -- the duo are in the midsts of a messy legal battle -- Hall showed no reluctance towards his former group's material. The set began with "Maneater," the 1982 chart-topper which spent more weeks at No. 1 than any other Hall & Oates song. Other beloved tunes included "Out of Touch," I Can't Go for That" and "You Make My Dreams."

"Everything's all wet over here, man," Hall exclaimed to the crowd, prior to performing his 1993 solo single "I'm in a Philly Mood." "Damn! I'm suffering right along with y'all!"

The bad weather eventually forced Hall to cut his set short, as the rocker only performed a total of 11 songs. A message posted to the Daryl's Den Facebook fan community confirmed that the singer was originally planning to play more.

"There was a lot of rain and wind last night, so Daryl and the band had to cut their set a bit short," the message explained. "Shows further into the tour will include new songs and another classic."

Set lists for both performances can be found below, along with fan-shot photos and video.

Daryl Hall and Elvis Costello’s Joint History

Hall and Costello have shared history, dating back to 1984. That year, the bespectacled English rocker released his album Goodbye Cruel World , and Hall sang harmony vocals on the song "The Only Flame in Town."

In the lead up to their tour together, Costello admitted he was “looking forward to kicking off the show in style.” Hall echoed similar excitement, and alluded to the musicians’ history. “It’s fantastic to be able to rekindle a musical relationship,” the singer noted.

John Oates solo tour

Hall’s former bandmate — whom he has a restraining order against now — is heading out on a solo tour of his own this year.

From March through August, the 75-year-old rocker will play at venues all over the U.S. including Newton, NJ’s Newton Theatre on Thursday, Aug. 22.

For a closer look, you can find his complete 2024 tour calendar here .

Daryl Hall new music

In 2022, Hall released the ambitious 30-track album  “Before After.”

The record harkens back to Hall’s classic piano-based hits and ballads of yesteryear.

We’re particularly fond of the bouncy  “Babs and Babs”  that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Hall and Oates ’80s cassette you’d blast while driving down the highway.

Want to hear the whole album — which includes a few live songs — to get a taste for yourself?

You can hear “Before After” in its entirety here .

Elvis Costello new music

The 69-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer hasn’t lost a step.

In 2022 alone, Costello released two records.

First, he dropped his 32nd studio album, “ The Boy Named If ,” which Pitchfork called “smashing.”

Later, he teamed up with his old bandmate Allen Mayes to revive his old group, Rusty. Together, they delivered the six-song record  “The Resurrection of Rust.”

Costello told  Ultimate Classic Rock  this unlikely team-up is the “record we (he and Mayes) would have cut when we were 18 if anyone had let us.”

You can hear bits and pieces of “The Resurrection of Rust”  here .

Elvis Costello special guest

This summer, Costello and The Imposters will be joined by Charlie Sexton.

Sexton, 55, is a music vet who served as a guitarist in Bob Dylan’s band, co-founded Arc Angels and created the Charlie Sexton Sextet.

You can listen to his bluesy/rockabilly catalog — including the absolute banger “Beats So Lonely” —  here .

daryl hall tour 2024

Before we move into a review of this summer’s least-likely double-headlining showcase—blue-eyed-soul doyen Daryl Hall and pub rock’s most cosmopolitan sophisticate, Elvis Costello—it’s important to know that I’m grading on a curve.

Ninety-two-degree weather with pulsing, sweltering humidity underneath an amphitheater’s cover—even in the bucolic setting of the Mann Center—is surely akin to performing in a rubber envelope dipped in boiling water. Add that to the fact that hometown hero Hall is 77 and Costello is turning 70 next month, and any live performance has got to be difficult to execute. Prior to the Mann performance, Costello tweeted that several of his band members were indisposed, a story he re-configured into “fallen afoul of a bad piece of fish” in person. (Days prior to this, in neighboring Camden, N.J., 91-year-old Willie Nelson—freshly returned to the stage after calling out sick for weeks—had to sing in the density of a 100-degree heatwave in another amphitheater.) Playing in such thick, overpowering heat is a young man’s game.

If you’re over 65, take it inside, folks.

Costello and non-pescatarian/pianist/keyboardist Steve Nieve used the mother of invention as their live tour guide on this evening, and they turned in boldly spare and plucky takes on “Pump It Up,” “Talking In The Dark,” the always-dramatic “Shot With His Own Gun” and a spittle-spraying, Euro-centric “Accidents Will Happen” as if they had made a stop at Bobby Short’s Café Carlyle for the night. This brand of cabaret/not-cabaret seemingly occurred because Costello’s voice always (based on the last several years of EC shows I’ve attended) needs some warming up.

Yet, his gruff sing-speaking voice worked a treat on this opening salvo of catalog faves, as well as his more-recent “A Face In The Crowd,” the title track from his forever-in-the-works stage musical set to open in September in London. Having heard “Face” a handful of times now, I still haven’t warmed to its (non-)charms as a pop-concert selection. Here’s hoping it fits into the framework of his musical more majestically.

daryl hall tour 2024

Better still, however, was Costello’s surprise cluster-funk rendition of “Come The Meantimes” with drummer Pete Thomas. That song was snagged from Costello’s collaborative album with Philly’s own the Roots, and it was among a handful of lovely (regular) set shake-ups, including a blowsy, bluesy cover of Mose Allison’s “Everybody’s Cryin’ Mercy,” a mean-edged “Waiting For The End Of The World” (with a hint of Van Morrison/Them’s “Gloria”) and a haunting version of “Clubland” teased and tickled by the Specials’ “Ghost Town.”

Consuming bad fish seems to have brought the best out of Elvis Costello and his Imposters.

As for Daryl Hall, the evening’s headliner (because double bill aside, someone’s got to open for someone else), his too was a smooth-yet-surly voice that needed a moment to warm to the night’s (barely there) air and his band’s thick groove. But once Hall got through holding on to his guitar for rough-and-salty renditions of solo songs such as “Dreamtime” and “Foolish Pride” (to say nothing of Hall & Oates hits such as the syncopated, soulful “Maneater,” “Rich Girl,” “Kiss On My List” and “Private Eyes”), he cozied up to his piano, got into “A Philly Mood” and happily stayed there for the rest of the night.

Any of us who love Hall witnessed his recent solo shows with Todd Rundgren as his support act and occasional harmonist, and we know that any renditions of H&O songs come at the price of missing Oates’ harmonic range. Now, if anyone could outpace Oates it would be Rundgren, and famously, Hall is the vocal king of swerving, full-boded soul and hook-laden, R&B-laced pop. When Hall tucked into the hotly ascending chords of “Everytime You Go Away” and “Sara Smile,” you could have felt your heart stop a beat as his voice lifted into the heavens.

daryl hall tour 2024

The simplistic “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” became a complex, jazzy set of riffs on an evenly themed, lean melody. You could tell that Hall, the vocalist, wasn’t enjoying the dense, air-less heat, but that Hall, the soul man, was going to keep the dreamy show going into the moody-blue likes of “Can’t Say No To You” (from new album D ) and odd finale “You Make My Dreams Come True.”

Hall has been definitely sticking with the same tried-and-true song selection on this tour. Which is fine. But for something even more liberationist from his one-time partner, here’s hoping that Hall dips into his past’s solo catalog (where’s Sacred Songs with Robert Fripp?) and the album tracks he wrote around-and-in-between the hit singles from his time with Oates.

I could go for that.

Reality tv survived the ’07 writers strike. why is it hurting in 2024, social media revels in tim walz's varied musical references, from beyoncé and taylor swift to prince and bob dylan, popular on variety.

In Costello’s case, his turn at the piano was a short one, unlike Hall’s extended foray at the keys. Normally, EC has Steve Nieve to meet all his keyboard needs. But, eight songs in, he took to the ebony-and-ivories himself to sing and play “A Face in the Crowd,” the title song of a long-in-the-works stage musical, based on the same Budd Schulberg novel that was the basis for the classic 1957 Elia Kazan movie. Costello has often played this number in concert in recent years, but with a mounting of the musical finally set to take place in London this fall, maybe there’s a reason to sing it with some extra urgency. It felt like his voice had been somewhat in warmup mode before then, but Costello belted this one with a clarion quality that made it sound as if he passionately believed the false promises in the lyrics.

Having established that Hall and Costello both have a way with a mid-set wail, what kind of tour partners do they make?

Good ones, from a booking perspective. A Venn diagram would probably show that there aren’t that many music fans that feel equally passionate about both performers, vastly different as the appeal of each is. But most devotees of each artist probably have some kind of affection for, and not much aversion to, the catalogs of the singer that is second fiddle in their minds… so this is effectively nearly doubling up the size of the potential audience without risking very many noticeable late arrivals or early walkouts. So, compliments to the chef, whoever that might be, who thought there’d be a certain complementarity that would work here.

This is not like the previous co-headlining tour Hall did with Todd Rundgren last year, where the latter performer joined him for a significant part of the show after doing the opening set. Nor is it like the Costello/Nick Lowe joint tour of last year, where no duets were guaranteed but you stood about a one-in-five chance of having Lowe stick around long enough to join Elvis for “Peace, Love and Understanding” or “Alison.” The one obvious overlap these two have had in the past was Hall singing the harmony vocal on Costello’s 1984 hit “The Only Flame in Town,” a chemistry one or both of them apparently have zero interest in recreating on the road.

Costello has been adding “The Only Flame in Town” to his set more and more in these shows, though, as a soloist, and it was fortunate for the Greek audience that Tuesday was one of those nights where he saw fit to include it. The original recording from the ‘80s sounds dated and cloying now (truth be told, it was a little dated and cloying the day it came out). But at the heart of it is a brilliant composition that Costello has revived from time to time in concert as a slow, breathy ballad, getting more clearly in touch with the idea that, yep, true to its ironic title, it is a torch song. It’s just as well that he didn’t ask Hall to come out and find his way between those lyrical flares; for this purpose, it’s fine that Costello is the only fireman in town.

For longtime fans who are used to certain hits coming at certain places, Costello is messing with heads a little by putting “Pump It Up” and “Watching the Detectives” right at the top of the show (a lot of folks were probably hearing Davey Faragher’s opening bass riff out in the parking lot). And by moving up “Peace, Love and Understanding” from its traditional finale spot, the shows now end on a balladic note — albeit still a give-the-people-what-they-want note — with “Allison.” Whether or not Costello always maintained the same affection for that last song that everybody else does, he seems to love it a lot more now that he has Charlie Sexton as an auxillary member of the Imposters, since Sexton is able to play the guitar part the intricate way it was performed on the original record. “Allison” might hit differently if he were closing out the night with it, instead of just leading into intermission, but it feels just right as a set-closer on this tour… leaving the audience feeling at intermission like the crowd with the most cake.

Costello gets to go to a lot of extremes in his repertoire on any given night, whether he’s doing a two-and-a-half-hour show on his own or playing for a mere hour-and-20 as a leadup artist here. Hall doesn’t have nearly that range in his catalog — no punky “No Actions” or Bacharach soliloquies here — but he does hit on enough variations of tone and style to make the set feel like it has some dynamics, before he satisfyingly settles into pure soul-man mode. At the Greek, he also eschewed hitting all the Hall and Oates greatest hits — leaving out, for instance, “Rich Girl” — in order to hit upon a few deep cuts and solo tracks. His set struck a finely tuned balance between delivering what most of the audience came for and offering a few surprises for his most faithful fans.

I’d like to say that Hall performed like a man unbound, now that he has declared that is done with Daryl Hall & John Oates as a duo once and for all. But if you follow his recent interviews, Hall kind of makes it sound like he always considered himself essentially a solo artist… if one who was duty-bound to make room for a sidekick to keep the branding alive. In any case, officially being solo once and for all doesn’t mean he’s about to get indulgent and start doing stuff off his ancient cult-favorite Robert Fripp collaboration (though some of us would have jumped up and down if he did). Even with his new solo album, “D” (which he helpfully held up a vinyl copy of), Hall is dedicated to making his current sound part of the H&O continuum.

No one on hand was about to argue with the vintage nature of 11 out of 12 tunes. There was no reason to when Hall has assembled a band that locks so neatly into grooves that turn out to have a lot more to them live than you necessarily remember coming from the radio back in the day. There’s a key link to the past here, besides Hall’s own indelible voice — it’s sax player Charles DeChant, still turning up in the same spots for solos that he did on the recordings of “Maneater” and “I Can’t Go for That.” He turned from sax man to flautist for the extended opening to “Sara Smile,” a long instrumental R&B fanfare so warm and inviting that you wished the song would never stop getting started.

‘It’s a gift in a way’: John Oates on life after Hall & Oates

There’s a song on John Oates’ new album, “Reunion,” about a renowned musical duo that stayed together for decades even as their relationship became strained. But the name of the song is not “Daryl Hall & John Oates.”

Instead, it’s called “Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee.” Written by Oates and Joe Henry, it’s inspired by the great folk-blues duo Oates was a fan of growing up in North Wales, when his tastes were shaped by visits to the Philadelphia Folk Festival and the Uptown Theater on North Broad Street.

Now, Oates is headlining this year’s Folk Fest at the Old Pool Farm on Aug. 17, as the annual gathering returns after a hiatus last year, marking the first time it was not held in any form since 1962.

Oates made headlines last November when his rift with Hall — with whom he founded the Philadelphia pop-soul group that scored hits like “Sara Smile,” “You Make My Dreams,” “Rich Girl,” and many more — went public amid a rancorous legal battle. That partnership is over and done with, said Oates, speaking via Zoom from his home in Woody Creek, Colorado.

Hall & Oates is “absolutely” finished, said the singer and guitarist who cowrote many of the band’s best-loved songs and sang lead on “She’s Gone” and “How Does It Feel To Be Back.”

“Fifty years is a long time to be together with anybody,” he said.

He’s actually understating the length of the union: the duo first met as Temple University students at the Adelphi Ballroom in West Philadelphia in 1967. Two years later, they formed their own group and released a first album, “Whole Oats,” in 1972.

“A house that’s divided isn’t strong enough to stand,” Oates sings on the gently captivating “Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee.” “Nothing gets decided by drawing lines in the sand.”

Was it written with tension between Hall and Oates in mind? It was, Oates says. But not consciously.

Terry, a harmonica player who died in 1986, and McGhee, a guitarist who died 10 years later, “grew to dislike each other,” Oates says. “They had a bad relationship. But then one of them lost his eyesight and the other lost his ability to walk. And they literally needed each other to get on stage.

“I wanted to write a story about lending a helping hand and make it a metaphor for kindness. And then I realized that deep down psychologically, I had been processing this situation between Daryl and myself. I was exorcising things that had been going on in my life.”

Oates is glad that it happened accidentally. Had he addressed the split in more specific terms, “it would either have fallen flat or sounded bitter and vindictive,” he said.

And he’s neither of those things, “not about Daryl Hall or my relationship with him or not working with him. In fact, I’m very happy about it because I think I’ve freed myself and, in a sense, I’ve freed Daryl to be whoever we can be in the later stages of our creative life. It’s a gift in a way.”

Hall & Oates’ last album of original music was “Do It For Love” in 2003. But they continued touring. I asked Hall how they avoided hating each other after so many years.

“Ever talk to a couple that’s been together for 40 years?” he answered. “They go beyond hate. No, the truth is in any successful relationship, you have to have a certain freedom to be the person you are.”

The duo was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, and their HoagieNation festival launched in 2017. But it failed to return in 2022 and Hall and Oates played their final show in Laughlin, Nev., in October 2022.

Recent tours “were never uncomfortable,” Oates said. “We always got along very well on the surface.” But he was frustrated “because I had to wear two different hats” and “couldn’t commit to either thing 100%. At a certain point, I said, ‘I have to do something else.’”

He gets that Hall & Oates fans are disappointed.

“People are always heartbroken when a long-term relationship falls apart. I understand people have a fondness for the memories they associate with the music they love and grew up with. I do, too. And I can’t deny the powerful emotions that I’ve been feeling, dealing with departing from a 50-year relationship. A friendship. It’s a big deal.”

But he’s also enjoying his freedom.

“I’m having so much fun. I just sat in with Lyle Lovett. A few weeks before that, I sat in at the Ryman with Del McCoury’s bluegrass band. Incredible opportunities are coming my way now and I have the flexibility to actually do them.”

“Reunion’s” title track was inspired by Oates’ father, Al, who turned 101 last month but has had recent health struggles. “We were worried he was headed to a reunion with my mom.” Ann Oates died in 2017.

But Al Oates pulled through, “and I started thinking about the word reunion, and reuniting with my former self, the musician I used to be.”

From fairway to charity pay: Boise Open drives donations home

by Savannah Hankard

Albertsons Boise Open (CBS2)

BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — The Albertsons Boise Open has almost hit its goal of completely selling out of tickets.

Jeff Sanders, the Executive Director of the Albertsons Boise Open, said it's looking like a record-breaking year. He said, "It's going to be our biggest and best event we've ever had. Golf by day, music by night."

The live music lineup of John Pardi, The Goo Goo Dolls, and Daryl Hall has been the most popular and each concert day is already sold out, but tickets for Sunday are still up for grabs. Sunday is Junior Day and the kids get to hop onto the green for some practice swings.

Sanders said, "Hopefully what happens is they get excited about golf, and the next thing you know, you know, they're, they're motivated to play golf, maybe their whole life."

Not only is it fun time for the whole family, but local charities benefit from every ticket. He said, "100% of the ticket sales go to a local charity. And most importantly, the buyer of the ticket gets a select one of 40 local Boise charities to send money from the ticket purchase to."

It's been a busy week for everyone getting ready for the main event, the tournament. A few of the pros competing Harry Higgs and Billy Haas, PGA Tour veterans but Sanders says whoever places first isn't the only winner.

Sanders said, "We always say the biggest winner of this tournament every year is the charities."

Tickets are sold out, but you can find secondary sellers HERE .

'Angry' Kirby, energetic lineup help Mariners get back on track

Daniel Kramer

Daniel Kramer

PITTSBURGH -- George Kirby sat in the visitors' clubhouse at PNC Park on Sunday morning, earbuds firmly attached as dubstep tunes played loudly and aggressively while he lurched into his locker. But behind him, the throwbacks of Stevie Wonder and Daryl Hall & John Oates played softly on the speakers as the rest of the Mariners arrived seeking to snap a five-game losing streak.

Kirby intended to pitch “pissed off” after arguably the worst outing of his career, while Seattle’s position players planned to play more free and at ease than they had during this rough road trip -- a stark dichotomy, but one that worked for both the individual and rest of the group.

Kirby carved his way through the Pirates for a quality start and a huge bounceback, while the Mariners’ lineup lifted him by registering a hit from each of its starting nine for the first time this year. And on the heels of what’s been maybe its worst week of the season, Seattle ran away to a 10-3 win that was as dominant as it was needed.

“That's how these guys are wired,” manager Scott Servais said. “That's why I love them so much. I really do. They care. They continue to work. And they're not always getting the results they want, but they handle the hard times, and you've got to keep pushing forward.”

daryl hall tour 2024

It started during Sunday’s hitters meeting, where Justin Turner spoke up about where Seattle stands with just six weeks remaining in the regular season. The 39-year-old veteran has only played 14 games with his new teammates after coming over in a Trade Deadline deal with Toronto, but his pedigree carries credibility.

Shortly after, as the players took the field, Julio Rodríguez legged out an infield single in the first inning, though his high right ankle sprain is still not 100 percent healed given his lengthy deceleration and wincing body language after he reached. But that hustle proved vital, as Cal Raleigh immediately followed with a tone-setting two-run homer.

And from there, the Mariners were off and running.

“It was just more life, more energy,” Turner said. “Obviously, offense breeds energy. ... I think there's an old saying in baseball that 'hitting is contagious.' I think it's true. And also, not hitting is contagious as well.”

After hitting .139 through the first five games of this trip, the Mariners went 13-for-39 (.333) on Sunday.

Josh Rojas and Dominic Canzone each crushed solo homers, advancing the Mariners to 12-0 this season when they hit at least three. But stringing together timely hits -- and passing the baton with three walks and two hit-by-pitches -- was just as key.

Such was the case in the second inning, when Rojas and Leo Rivas each reached and then Victor Robles, who is still nursing a left hip flexor injury, drove them in with a double to the left-field wall. Robles did so in a full count after falling behind 0-2.

Have the latest news, ticket information, and more from the Mariners and MLB delivered right to your inbox.

Then in the fourth, Rivas and Robles were on base when Rodríguez hit a 105.1 mph chopper that led to an error from Pirates third baseman Jared Triolo, which allowed a run to score. Luke Raley kept that rally alive with a sac fly, giving the Mariners -- and Kirby -- a seven-run lead.

“I just tried to put last week behind me, take a couple of things, learn from it,” Kirby said of Monday’s outing in Detroit , when he surrendered a career-high 11 runs (only six of which were earned). “Today, I just tried to pitch angry.”

Kirby’s aggressive demeanor has been well-chronicled , though he’s channeled it much better this season via a pointed effort. But Sunday’s start was necessary to bring back “Furious George.”

“I feel like I've had a lot of learning lessons from pitching pissed off,” Kirby said. “It's hard to do that for like a whole day coming to the ballpark, listening to dubstep in my ear or whatever. So I think you've just got to pick and choose your spots to get pissed off and really execute, bear down. Besides that, just be calm and relaxed and just try not to think too much.”

Most games aren’t going to yield this type of dominance -- it is the big leagues, after all. But for a team that desperately needed a spark, Sunday’s outcome couldn’t have been better.

“We know there are win streaks, losing streaks, but you have a job to do every day,” Raleigh said. “And we get paid very well to come here and play as hard as we can and be prepared. ... We’ve got to keep it going.”

Hall Versus Oates: What Went Wrong?

No one thought much of it when Daryl Hall and John Oates set out on separate tours this year. They'd done it before only to reunite for arena shows.

John Oates onstage at the original City Winery in Manhattan, Daryl Hall performing with Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives at his club in Pawling, NY.

So maybe some but not others were surprised by the news that the pair is embroiled in a legal battle, one that led Hall to obtain a temporary restraining order against his now-former music partner.

A judge has sealed a lawsuit that Hall filed last week in Nashville, where Oates lives, according to multiple news outlets.

So little is known about the dispute -- other than maybe that it's gone too far (but you know it don't matter anyway).

Pennsylvania natives Daryl Franklin Hohl, 77, and John William Oates, 75, met when both were attending Temple University in 1967. They signed their first record contract five years later and produced a radio-friendly blue-eyed soul that made them prominent purveyors of the sweet burgeoning sound of Philadelphia.

Hall and Oates quickly had a hit with "She's Gone." They went on to international superstardom, selling more albums than any duo in recorded music history and rifling off chart toppers that included "Rich Girl," "Sara Smile," "Kiss On My List," "Private Eyes," "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)," "One on One," "You Make My Dreams," "Say It Isn't So" and "Out of Touch."

Hall launched the "Live From Daryl's House" webcast more than 15 years ago, featuring musicians who traveled to his then-home in Millerton, NY, to perform with him and his band.

The still-soulful singer shifted the stage to Daryl's House, a restaurant and live music club that he opened on Route 22 in Pawling, NY, on Halloween 2014.

Guests on the Webby Award-winning show included Kenny Loggins, Joe Walsh, Smokey Robinson, the O'Jays, Aaron Neville, Cheap Trick and CeeLo Green. Hall also took the show on the road to Charleston for a special episode with Darius Rucker.

Oates, meanwhile recorded five solo albums, including the critically acclaimed Americana masterpiece "Arkansas" in 2018.

That same year, "Live From Daryl's House" broadcast what would be its last episode for five years. The show returned earlier this month, kicking off with Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze, on a dedicated YouTube channel.

Although they were more often soul alone than together, Hall & Oates never officially split up.

Oates told GQ in 2021 that they had "way more ups than downs" and called it "a miracle" that he and Hall were still playing together.

Then came an infamous interview on Bill Maher's "Club Random" podcast last year in which Hall said: "You think John Oates is my partner? John and I are brothers, but we are not creative brothers. We are business partners.

"We made records called Hall & Oates together, but we’ve always been very separate, and that’s a really important thing for me.”

Hall also downplayed the role that Oates played in the partnership -- citing, for instance, the song "Kiss On My List."

"I did all those [harmonies]," he told Maher. "That’s all me."

Hall and Oates performed onstage together for the last time at the Laughlin Event Center in Nevada on Oct. 22, 2022.

Oates earlier this year released a reggae version of "Maneater," which he claimed was how it was originally supposed to sound more than 40 years ago.

That may or may not have influenced the Daryl Hall Revocable Trust to file a contract lawsuit against Oates and two co-trustees of The John W. Oates TISA Trust in Nashville Chancery Court last Thursday, Nov. 16.

That same day, Hall's lawyers applied for a TRO, which a judge granted on Friday. Oates and his co-trustees were then sent summonses.

A judge sealed all the papers for the time being. Details are expected to emerge as the case moves on.

Hall is in Japan, continuing a "Live From Daryl's House" tour with Todd Rundgren and the members of his webcast band.

Oates is headed to Colorado at the end of December and the beginning of January, with a May date scheduled at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Meanwhile, longtime Hall and Oates fans better learn how to face it.
