Duration of Addis Ababa city tour: Full day

The largest city of Ethiopia and its capital city at the same time is Addis Abeba, which in Amharic means “a new flower”. It is in the center of the country, 2400 above the sea. It is one of the highest-located capital cities in the world. According to many sources, Addis Abeba is third in such classification, after Bolivian La Paz and Ecuador’s Quito. However, La Paz is not an official capital city of its country, so we can move the Ethiopian city up to the second place. During a day trip, you will see all the most important places to visit in Addis Ababa, if possible, we can include some other attractions of the capital city of Ethiopia.

Before noon

Visitng Addis Abeba will begin with seeing the orthodox cathedral of the Holy Trinity. It is the most important church in Ethiopia. In this church, there is a mausoleum of the last emperor of Ethiopia – Haile Selasje. his wife is also buried there. Then, we will see the National Museum, which is said to be one of the most important museums in whole Sub-Saharian Africa. 3,2 million-years old bones of our grand grand …. ancestor – Lucy, are one of the most famous exhibits of their collection. The attention of visitors is drawn by a rich collection of insignia of emperor and churches, costumes, and weapons. The oldest exhibits are rock sculptures and inscriptions from the times of Queen Saba, found near Aksum and in today’s Eritrea.    The ethnographic museum, which is a next stop on our trip in Addis Abeba, is in the University. It was found and managed by Polish scientists, professor Stanisław  Chojnacki. The most interesting part of the exhibition is a collection of crosses and icons. The museum should be visited by amateurs of folklore instruments, since the collection of them gathered in the museum is impressive.

The lunch break will take place in the restaurant serving Ethiopian dishes and local beer. e.g in “Ambassador” with a large garden.

After lunch, we will climb the Entoto hill located 3200 m above the sea. There is now a new park with an observation deck offering panoramic views of Addis Ababa. Here located was the capital city of Ethiopia, before Menelik II moved it to Addis Abeba. The king’s palace remained until today. The local museum exhibits crowns belonging to kings and church, costumes, and insignia.

The final attraction of the day in Addis Abeba will be a trip through Merkato, which is believed to be the biggest marketplace in Africa. After visiting, we will escort you to the chosen hotel or to the airport.

Welcome to Ethiopia, On arrival we will meet you at the airport then refresh and begin your sightseeing of Addis Ababa with a drive up to Mount Entoto for a panoramic view of Addis.

Descend down and drive to the National Museum where you will have a chance to spot the oldest hominids of the ‘Lucy’ fossil. Visit and proceed to the Holy Trinity built during WWII.

Then proceed to the Ethnographic Museum, which use to be the palace of Emperor Hailesellase later after having your lunch we will take you to one of the holiest churches of Ethiopia known as the Holi Trinity church then we will see the tombs of Emperor Haile Silase with the amazing painting of the church later after you visit the museums of this church we will wrap up you drive to Merkato, the biggest market in East Africa.

In the evening attends a folkloric dinner where you will have a chance to taste several national dishes and watch dances of the various ethnic groups of Ethiopia. The traditional coffee ceremony will also be served.

Later you will be transferred to the airport for your departure.

Addis ababa full day city tour.

Description

Addis Ababa, the third highest capital in the world lies between 2300 – 2500 meters.

Drive north up to  Mount Entoto  – as one drive up the hill there is an appreciable drop in temperature and the air is filled with the scent of the Eucalyptus trees which line the road. From the top, there is a panoramic view of the capital and surrounding countryside.

Descend to Addis Ababa, stopping off at the  National Archaeological Museum .  You could find exhibits ranging from the 3.5 million-year-old bones of Lucy,

Institute of Ethiopian Studies , where one can see clothing from different regions, along with artifacts, household utensils and in a separate section, paintings reflecting the history and culture of the country.

Then move to the  Mercato , the largest market area in Africa, where virtually every possible commodity is on sale, from livestock to computers.  For the visitor good at bargaining, there is a huge selection of Ethiopian arts and crafts.

Addis Ababa City Tour

Inside Ethiopia Tours offers a full day city tour , to visit the main attractions of Addis Ababa.  We start with a visit to the Entoto Mountain , where the city was first established, the Ethnographic Museum ,  the perfect introduction to the Ethiopian culture and lifestyles, located inside the main campus of Addis Ababa University, in Sidist Kilo. The building that hosts this museum was once Emperor Haile Selassie’s palace.  Continue with a visit to the National Museum, home to ancient fossils and other fascinating artifacts. A  replica of Lucy , the famous three and a half million year old skeleton found in the Afar region, is found in this building. After a lunch break in Taitu Hotel, the oldest hotel in Addis Ababa, situated in the former Italian neighbourhood of  Piazza , we will have a delicious  Ethiopian coffee at Tomoca , the oldest and first coffee roasting business in Ethiopia. Afterwards, the tour continues with a visit to the Trinity Cathedral, a 19th century baroque style church adorned by statues of angels and saints, very different from the Ethiopian traditional churches, where Haile Selassie and his wife men are buried, also has an adjacent cemetery where the graves of many important Ethiopian figures can be viewed. Finally, the tour ends with a stop in Merkato , the largest open market in Africa, where you can find all kinds of goods.

Addis Ababa (“New flower” in Amharic) is the third highest capital in the world with an altitude of 2,400 m. Founded in 1887 by Emperor Menelik II, it is also known as the capital of Africa for hosting multiple international institutions such as the African Union Commission and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa . Multicultural and full of authentic places, Addis is constantly growing and becoming one of the most vibrant places in Africa.

Well organized tour with knowledgable, helpful guide - thanks Haileselassie!

We enjoyed a wonderful two day tour with Haileselassie. He arranged transport for us and collected us on time from our hotel, and showed us the ancient Abreha We Atsbeha first. This is Haileselassie’s favourite church and he really shared his passion for it. We then drove on to see Yohannes Maequdi and Debre Tsion the same day. The walking was hard work but Haileselassie was patient and encouraging and the views were incredible. The next day we saw the most famous churches, Abuna Yemata Guh and Maryam Korkor, Haileselassie suggested to see them on the second day and we were glad we did – the location and views were breathtaking and the church paintings unforgettable.

Haileselassie was very knowledgeable about all the churches and very responsive to our needs, everything was well organised and the prices were reasonable. Definitely recommend you go with him! It is easiest to arrange by Whats App on +251 91 424 5033.

Good, reliable, knowledgeable guide in Tigray

We had two trips during two years to Tigray region (it was connected with the scientific exploration of christian art in rock-hewn churches). We used services of Haile Sellasie twice as he is really reliable and knowledgeable person. He can also arrange a transport for you (cheaper than hotels can offer). He know a lot about the churches and can make your trip better there.

Knowledgeable and Flexible Guide

Haile Selassie was our guide for a 5 day trip to Mekele and Gheralta Rock. Our group had a 68 year old and a 4 year old and Haile Selassie was able to tailor the tour experience to ensure everyone had a great time. He knows a lot about the area and the churches, and everyone also seems to know him. He can provide detailed explanations of the history of each church as well as the paintings and carvings. We were very glad to have Haile Selassie as our guide in Tigray.
