Teta will show you how to make delicious traditional Greek food in her Mykonos Cooking Class .
The 11 Best Tours & Things To Do in Mykonos 1. Mykonos Cooking Class (Traditional Greek Food) This is an absolutely wonderful Greek cooking class: fun, informative, great food. And the wine flows freely. It lasts a little less than 6 hours and starts at 10am or 4pm with free transfer from your hotel or the cruise port. Highly recommended. If you only do one organized activity in Mykonos, make it this one. (It’s rare for kids to do the class but when they do they have a blast.) 2. Sunset Sailing Cruise Awesome Mykonos boat tour with swimming, food, and unlimited drinks. Lots of swimming and snorkeling. Good fun. 3. Original Morning Delos Guided Tour After a 45-minute boat ride to Delos , explore the ancient island with a fully accredited guide. Delos (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is one of the best-preserved and most important historical sites in Greece and the best day trip from Mykonos. If you’re interested in visiting Delos, we recommend taking a guided tour; there are loads of ruins, but few signs, so it can be difficult to know what you’re looking at without a guide. 4. Delos & Rhenia Islands Boat Trip Tour the ancient island of Delos (entrance fee not included) then swim, snorkel, and sunbathe from the yacht and along the coast of the uninhabited island of Rhenia. BBQ meal and unlimited drinks included. 5. Catamaran Cruise with 3-Course Meal A super fun way to spend a day out on the water. Lots to eat and drink (and the food is surprisingly good quality). Lie on the deck, swim, snorkel, or sight-see as you make your way around the Mykonos coastline or to the island of Rhenia (depending on win, weather, and guest preference). This one is a little expensive, but worth it for the small group size and luxury service. Note : Both of the previous boat tours get fully booked from late June to early September. If that’s the case, the Full-Day Mykonos Catamaran Cruise is an excellent alternative – it’s a little more expensive but the food is also better. 6. Highlights of Mykonos: Half-Day Tour Starts with a walking tour of Mykonos Town and then visits the best sights, small villages (like Ano Mera above), and small hidden churches all over the island. 7. Mykonos Hiking Adventure This photo is from a helicopter tour I took of Mykonos (awesome but expensive) and I thought the aerial view gave a good overview of the Mykonos landscape. Beautiful beaches backed by rolling countryside with a mix of green farmland and trail-crossed steppes. Which all makes for a great hike. The hike ends with a swim at a beach. Ippos horseback riding is another great way to see the Mykonos countryside. 8. Yummy Pedals Bike Tour Discover the rugged landscape of Mykonos’ interior on a standard bike or e-bike. Offering seven different tour routes to suit all experience levels and varying interests, whether leisure, romance, adventure, or challening. Casual cyclists can enjoy rural back roads, stopping at cultural sites, learning about traditional life, and finishing at the beach for a picnic and underwater photo shoot. More experienced cyclists can opt for a scenic bike ride up the mountain peaks as high as the wind turbines for panoramic views over the island’s north coast. Private, bespoke tours can be arranged on request. 9. Wine and Farm Tour Daily wine tours in English (or French, on request) are on offer at this historic vineyard dating to the 19th-century, when it supplied wine for a local monastery. Guests of this family-owned homestead will learn about biodynamic cultivation and local winemaking customs, while sampling all four types of wines produced onsite. Visit during the fall harvest, and take the opportunity to stomp grapes in the traditional way. Food pairings can be added. This kid-friendly tour also includes visiting and interacting with the farm animals, including donkeys, sheep, and goats. Tours of the farm and vineyard are free; tastings and food pairings are additional. 10. Mosaic Workshop Mosaic artist Irene Syrianou grew up on sacred Delos Island and worked there for ten years, familiarizing herself with the ancient mosaics of the archaeological site while honing her own techniques. In her private and group workshops, she instructs students in replicating the mosaics of antiquity or creating their own modern works. Workshops take place in Manto Garden or in her studio space and can range from an hour or two up to a multi-day seminar. All ages and experience levels welcome. 11. Mykonos Farmers Cheese and Cooking Class Cheesemaking, cheese tasting, and cooking classes are available at this locally-owned dairy in Agios Lazaros, a short drive from Mykonos Town. The dairy makes a variety of regional cheeses only found in Mykonos and the Cyclades, along with more familiar flavors and rich Greek yogurt. Cooking and cheesemaking classes include a tour of the facilities and sampling the wares. Hands-on workshops run for about two hours and are open to beginning and advanced cooks, ages 14 and older.
The Best Free Thing To Do in Mykonos Mykonos Beach Walk Walk from Platis Gialos Beach to Paradise Beach , making stops at beach bars and restaurants along the way. You’ll pass Agia Anna and Paraga beaches and several other small swimming coves. Super fun and free! (Besides what you spend on food and drinks, of course.) If you’re staying in Mykonos Town, take the bus to Platis Gialos and then start walking along the beach towards the east (if you’re facing the water, walk to your left). There are several great places to eat along the walk. If you hike straight to Paradise Beach it will take about an hour (without stops). Then bus back from Paradise to Mykonos Town or take the water taxi back to Platis Gialos or Ornos (my personal favorite).
- Where to Stay in Mykonos
About Santorini Dave
Would you say Taxis and/or Ubers are hard to come from from Super Paradise Beach? We are leaving at 3pm to head back to the cruise port for a 6pm departure. This should be MORE than enough time right?
Charmel Morelli
Taxis are hard to get anywhere, anytime. At least with any reliability. I would not depend on taxis. Take the bus back to Mykonos Town. There are sometimes taxis by the bus station, if not, catch another bus from Mykonos Town to the port.
Hi Dave! Loving this blog! I have a question about the Mykonos beach walk – we’re very interested in stopping along the way as you suggest but wondering what that’s like summer of 2021 specifically when everywhere is reservations only. Is that true of even just grabbing a drink along the walk? And if so and you had to choose only one to reserve and stay at – which one or which area would it be? We’re not getting much response when messaging the beach clubs directly. Thanks!
Reservations are strongly recommended at least during July/August and a pretty good idea in June/early September. It’s incredibly busy this season pretty much everywhere in the Cyclades, but even in June and early September, it can be hard to get a sunbed/umbrella set at the better beach clubs. But if you’re only going to drink and don’t need a lounge set, then it’s all good. You can get a drink pretty much anywhere no matter how busy, and just lay your towel out on the sand. Especially this year, you can get cocktails to go from almost all bars and restaurants on the island.
Hello Dave, since you have been to both Mykonos and Santorini where would you recommend doing a boat tour more? I don’t want to do a boat tour in both cities. I will be spending 5 days in each and am worried there will be less to do in Santorini–is it better to do a boat tour there? Mykonos seems like there will be a lot more partying/beaches to enjoy. Just wanted your opinion. Thanks!
A Santorini boat tour will be far more unique and awe-inspiring with the views of the caldera and cliffs. In Mykonos it will be more fun and relaxing. But not sure I agree with your premise: Santorini has far more to do than Mykonos – wine tours and wineries, hikes, historical sites, museums, volcano visits, jet ski tours. Mykonos has the beach and nightlife (which are great) and not much else.
The “Small Yacht Cruise to Delos & Rhenia Islands” appears to not be taking reservations due to availability (I wasn’t even able to put in my dates, seems to be a blanket statement on their site.) Other than the two you also suggest on this page, is there another similiar tour to this one that you’d recommend? I’m going with my mother (in her 60s) and my 8yo daughter – in case that makes a difference in what you recommend.
You’re probably just a little too early. Most tours should be online and ready to book by late January or early February.
Do you know of a good scuba diving course/tour in Mykonos for beginners/intermediate? We would like to visit the best scuba dive spots around Mykonos for a reasonable price.
Mykonos PADI Scuba Diving does a two-hour scuba course in Mykonos .
Are the paths etc okay for wheelchairs?
If you mean the paths along the coast between the beaches, then no, I wouldn’t say they’re wheelchair-accessible. If you mean the lanes and alleys of Mykonos Town, then yes, I think they should be “ok” for travelers in wheelchairs (though not ideal by any means).
Hello. If my daughter and I do the Mykonos cooking class, do you have any ideas for my adult son and husband? I’m also wondering if they would be able to pay and join us for lunch? Thank you for your expert advice!
They could do the tour to Delos. Or, if not a tour, walk from Psarou to Paradise Beach along the coast.
Thanks for your website, such great info. We were planning on having a 6-day Honeymoon, taking in 3 days in Santorini & 3 in Mykonos (Town). We were hoping to go in September but due to personal circumstances that are no longer possible, so we would be looking at something like the 10th to 16th of October. I am concerned though that this will be too late in the season, & we’ll struggle for restaurants & bars, especially in Mykonos.
Can you advise if we will struggle for eating & drinking at this time? We obviously don’t expect it to be full-on party mode but would like some sort of vibe for going out & having a couple of drinks at night (or even places that are at least open).
Santorini will be busy and active, with everything open – no problem there. Mykonos will be slower for sure. A few places will have started to close for the winter but most will be open. Nightlife will be subdued but there’ll definitely be places open to go for a drink and encounter some other travelers. There will definitely be plenty of open restaurants – so I would not worry on that front.
What is the best way to get to Santorini from Mykonos? Just want a day of exploring? There were no available flights during the time we are there to fly there and back.
Ferry is the best way to get to Santorini from Mykonos. There are many ferries every day in summer. But it’s very hard, if not impossible, to do it as a day trip. You’ll need to stay overnight.
Hi Dave, We have rented a villa near Mykonos town. Most transportation mentioned is a bus or boat, is it reasonable to expect taxi service? Thank You!
Yes, there are taxis but not a lot. During busy times it can be very hard to secure a taxi.
Hi Dave, What are your thoughts on boat tours around Mykonos being really rocky due to the winds? I’ve read on other sites that the waters can be very rough and Tours will often go out despite rough seas. Only have 3.5 days in Mykonos so I’m nervous to gamble with a boat tour that could ruin a day. Love your cooking class recommendation, just having a hard time getting my fiancé onboard with that. Thanks in advance!
Yes, the waters can get rough. Not much you can do about that except hope for the best. The cooking class is great fun.
Tipping, how does this work for a tour? If we booked the 6 hours BBQ catamaran tour per couple it would come to $491, should we tip 20% ~$100?
Thanks! Kelly
Yeah, if that’s in your budget then that’s great. Tourism workers in Greece make very little so it would be appreciated.
Hi Dave – Is it warm enough to swim at the end of April / beginning of May?
Water will be cool but if the weather’s nice, yes, people will be hopping in for brief plunges in the sea. By mid/late May it’s usually much warmer for swimming.
Cooking Class in Mykonos, do you know if they are able to accommodate vegetarians? Amit
Yes, definitely. Many of the best Greek dishes are vegetarian. I’d drop them a note (in reply to the confirmation email that you’ll get) a few days before your date telling them you’re vegetarian but won’t make much difference in either case.
Thanks Dave! Why is it that you prefer renting a car over an ATV?
It’s safer. It’s more comfortable. You can talk to each other instead of yelling over the wind. But just my preference, your experience may differ.
My husband and I will be in Mykonos and Santorini at the end of August. We definitely want to get some ATV’s and do some exploring on our own. Do you have any suggestions for places we should rent from on both islands? Is it necessary to book these in advance of our trip?
No need to book ATVs in advance. Where to get them depends on the town you’re staying in but there should be a service/company nearby that can arrange something. BTW, I much prefer renting a car but that’s up to you.
My family together with my sister’s have booked a 10 day trip to Mykonos mid August. I’m slightly annoyed at my sloppy planning and regret not booking a few days first in santorini. There do not appear to be any day trips there from Mykonos unless the ferry companies have different schedules during the summer months? Do you have any fun suggestions during our stay? Our kids ages range from 22-13. Helen Pope
The cooking course (see above) and boat tours to Delos or Rhenia islands are at the top of the list. I would consider taking an overnight trip to Santorini. Keep your hotel in Mykonos and just take a small backpack or two. Stay at a cheap hotel in Fira and you’ll get 30 hours to explore Santorini. You are wasting the one night hotel in Mykonos but a lot cheaper than the plane tickets to get back to Santorini on a different trip.
Can you recommend the best transportation to get from Athens airport to Athens Diamond homtel at 9:00pm and returning to the airport to catch a flight at 7:00 am.
The easiest is a taxi. The cheapest is the metro (you’ll want the Monastiraki station which is about a 5 to 8 minute walk from your hotel). But for your morning flight you’ll need to take a taxi (or the airport bus from Syntagma Square) as the metro won’t be running in time to make your flight.
Your restaurant recommendations for Santorini were very helpful. I went to several of your recommended restaurants and they were great. I am going to Mykonos in 2 days. Any restaurant recommendations for Mykonos? Thank you!! Karl Smith
I have a list of the best Mykonos restaurants on my Mykonos hotel page .
We would be spending about 3.5 days in Mykonos late May. We are considering the Jeep tour and South Coast cruise. Is it worth it to go for 2 full day tours or choose one? Which and what would you recommend?
Thank you! Perrine
They are very different (one on a boat, one in a jeep) and have little or no overlap. Doing both is reasonable. If I could only do one, it would the south coast boat cruise.
Hi Dave~ your site is a wealth of information! My husband and I are flying into Athens 6/25-7/2. Per your suggestion we will spend the first few nights at the Hotel Grande Bretagne. Need to ferry over to Mykonos for a work meeting for a few days. After researching, I was thinking of ferrying over from Piraeus and back into Rafina since it is closer to the airport. I’m a little nervous that the earliest ferry back on 7/2 is at 11:40. We have a 5:30 flight the same day. Is that cutting it close? Weather/strikes etc.. I would hate to miss our departure home. We could come back the eve of 7/1 and spend one additional night in Athens (shortening MYK by a little bit) to give us wiggle room. If so, should we stay somewhere closer to the airport to get a different vibe? Or would you go back into Athens and head to the airport the next day. Or do you think we are OK on that 11:40- 14:15 ferry? Would love to know how you wold handle getting back to mainland, your input. Shaun Hammons
That connection time would be too tight for my tastes. Could you make? Yes, certainly. But it doesn’t take much for a SeaJet ferry to be late by 90 minutes and that’s all it would take for you to miss your flight. I would ferry to Piraeus the night before and stay somewhere in the Plaka for a final night (lots of great places to eat in the area). There is nothing out by the airport so definitely do not stay there as you’ll almost have an evening and a good half-day to see and do stuff in Athens. (Or you can fly from Mykonos to Athens and have an extra night in Mykonos – there are afternoon flights that get to Athens at 12:25pm or 3:10pm.)
What is the best tour of Mykonos Town? Is it worth taking a tour or can we explore Mykonos Town on our own?
It’s easy to walk around Mykonos Town on your own and see the sights – but a tour always offer a different level of understanding and history. People almost never regret taking a tour and I highly recommended them. The Mykonos Town and Island Tour goes through Mykonos Town and Ano Mera (the second largest village on Mykonos) as well as a few other stops. It’s well worth the 4 hours.
Hey Dave, I am going to be visiting in mid may. We have kept 4 days in Mykonos. Any suggestions on a day trip to islands nearby?
Delos (greek history) and Rhenia (beaches and swimming) are the two best day trips from Mykonos. The bigger islands (Naxos, Paros, Santorini) are difficult to make work for a day trip – especially in May when ferries are not as frequent as summer.
Hi Dave, Do you recommend booking at boat tour in Mykonos ahead of time? We will be in Mykonos for four days during the middle of May. Thank you! Alex
If you’re on the fence then wait and see if that’s how you want to spend your time once you’re on the island. If you’re certain there’s something you want to do (e.g. Delos) then book as early as possible.
Hi Dave, I have found your website so helpful for planning our upcoming trip. It seems that the link for the “Full day small yacht cruise to Rhenia Island” on the Mykonos day tours page is not working. Could you direct me to that tour?
Thanks so much! Megan Reese
I fixed the link. Thanks!
Your sharing have indeed been so helpful towards my planning to Greece. I will be travelling at the end of October. Due to my limited travelling time, I would like to catch the best of all in Greece.
Between Mykonos, Crete, & Zakynthos, which is best? Which will be a better choice? I intend to stay 2 nights in either one of the above.
Mykonos and Crete are the best choices. Mykonos is small and thus the best choice for a quick 2 night trip. But, it will be very quiet by the end of October. Not quite “completely dead” but not lively by any stretch. Chania on Crete will still have plenty going on and has a great array of restaurants that should all still be open. It doesn’t quite give the idyllic greek-island feel as it’s a medium-sized town on a large island – but it’s great nonetheless.
Do you need to do a tour to get to the best Mykonos Beaches (quiet and secluded beaches) or just rent a car and do a self-tour?
To get to the quiet and remote ones, yes, a tour is good – and a boat tour better. But for the most popular ones close to Mykonos Town a rental car is fine for getting around. In fact, bus is the best as you can take it to Psarou or Platys Gialos then walk to Paranga and Paradise beaches along a coastal path that is both beautiful and dotted with little swimming spots. The tours are fun though.

Mykonos is a Greek island, part of the Cyclades, and is a very popular Mediterranean cruise port. Thousands a year flock for the island's vibrant nightlife, crystal clear waters, and award-winning restaurants. Compared to the world-renowned Santorini, Mykonos offers better beaches, archeological wonders, and so much more. Explore Mykonos and everything it has to offer.
Beautiful Beaches
There's no shortage of incredible beaches on this Greek island. Here are some of our favorites and why.
Agios Ioannis
Considered the most beautiful beach on the island's southwest coast, Agios has soft sand and clear blue waters. From there, cruisers can enjoy an amazing view over the island of Delos. It's a good place to get away from it all, but not too close to the town to be overwhelmed by tourists.
Elia is the largest beach in Mykonos. The beach is largely family-friendly with lots of beach cafes and places to eat. Embodying a fun, carefree atmosphere, it's no wonder that it's one of Mykonos' most popular beach destinations. Elia is 25 minutes by car from Mykonos Town.
Popular with families who enjoy watersports, this beach is on the eastern side of the island. Sailing, windsurfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and more await at Kalafati. Feeling thirsty or hungry? Upscale open-air bars and seafood restaurants line the shore.
The most famous of all of Mykonos' beaches, Paradise is what a party beach is all about. It attracts crowds who dance, drink, and listen to the music playing at several bars and restaurants. Paradise is just 20 minutes from the center of Mykonos Town. It's also within walking distance of four other beaches: Paraga, Agia Anna, Platys Gialos, and Psarou.
Archeological Sites
Discover Mykonos' ancient heritage at their popular archeological sites that date back thousands of years.
Delos is next to Mykonos and is the island where Apollo was born, based on Greek mythology. The entire island was dedicated to the Greek god of the sun, and worshipers from all over the Mediterranean would come to honor him. It's currently an open archeology site with fascinating monuments and a museum. Delos was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Greece back in 1990.
Full-Day Sightseeing
Mykonos is considered a small island, - but with everything that there is to see and do, tourists can spend several days sightseeing.
Mykonos is one of the most developed islands in Greece for tourism - there are regular ferries all year long, but itineraries are most frequent during the summer. Tourists can ferry to Athens, Santorini, Paros, Naxos, Crete, Tinos, and more. All ferries to Mykonos dock at the New Port of Mykonos, just minutes away from the Main Town in a car.
Old Town Mykonos, otherwise known as Chora (also known as "Mykonos Town" or "Hora", is the picturesque capital and largest town on the island. It's a mostly pedestrian maze of narrow streets with cubic whitewashed houses. It's essentially a traditional Cycladic village, with bougainvilleas, small white churches, and colorful windows, doors, and balconies. Visitors can explore on their own or do a walking tour with a small group.
Famous Churches
There are several iconic churches across the island. The Panagia Paraportiani Church dates back to the 1400s, and it's considered a perfect example of Cycladic architecture. Panagia Paraportiani is classified as a national monument and can be found in the town of Chora. The architecture of the monastery of Panagia Tourliani is just as impressive. Originally built in 1542 by two priests, the monastery was restored in 1767 and is located in Ano Mera village.
The island is known for its impressive beaches and nightlife, but the culinary scene further adds to its charm. From fine-dining and internationally acclaimed restaurants to street food and traditional bakeries, Mykonos has something for everyone. However, if you're more interested in drinking and dancing, there is no better place to party. From confetti-dropping bottle-popping mega-club experiences to intimate live music bars, most of them are within walking distance of the island's main hub of Old Town.

15 Best Things to Do in Mykonos (Greece)
Mention Mykonos and a few images will spring to mind, whether it’s celebrities sunbathing on yachts, bright white Cycladic architecture or paradisiacal beaches.
One of the most popular islands in the Aegean, Mykonos has a fun-loving, cosmopolitan atmosphere and is well-established as a gay-friendly destination.
You’ll want to spend as much time as possible in the fashionable and arty Chora (Mykonos Town) getting share-worthy shots of the famous windmills and pure white houses. Even the cracks between the marble paving stones are painted white here.
Afterwards you can investigate the enchanting ruins of Delos and head off to all corners of Mykonos in a matter of minutes, hunting down the best beaches and vantage points.
Let’s explore the best things to do in Mykonos :
1. Mykonos Windmills
The first sight that hoves into view before you pull into the harbour is this row of seven white windmills posted on a small cape.
These would most likely have been built by the Venetians as long ago as the 16th century and are oriented to the north to catch the prevailing wind.
They were built close to the harbour to mill grain offloaded from ships to make it easier to transport.
The mills have become a symbol for the whole of island and are a simple walk southwest of the Alefkandra quarter.
There’s a small gift shop next to the road, and you can join the gaggle of photographers taking snaps of the white mills contrasted by the blues of the sky and sea.
Recommended tour : Mykonos Walking Tour
2. Matogianni Street
A north to south street through Mykonos Town, with little alleys darting off it, Matogianni Street is where it all happens.
By day you can idle along, perusing souvenir shops, boutiques, jewellery stores and a couple of international chains like Sephora and Lacoste.
When hunger strikes you could opt for a souvlaki or gyro or sit down at one of many tavernas, which tend to be more reasonably priced here deeper in the town.
And in the evening there’s a delectable choice of restaurants at romantic spots with bougainvillea climbing the walls, and bars that do a roaring trade to the early hours.
At the old harbour you can set sail for one of Greece’s most treasured archaeological sites.
The island of Delos is just a couple of kilometres from the southwest coast of Mykonos and its excavations have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you’re up to scratch on Olympian Greek mythology you may know Delos as the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis.
But more than a thousand years beforehand the island was already a venerated holy sanctuary.
There’s a lot to discover, like the Terrace of the Lions from the 7th century BC, the Doric Temple of the Delians, the Minoan Fountain, a series of market squares and the Theatre Quarter, laid with splendid mosaics.
You can also see phenomenal Hellenistic mosaics at the House of Dionysos, the House of Masks, House of the Trident, House of the Lake and House of the Dolphins.

4. Delos Archaeological Museum
After 30 years of excavations the French School of Athens needed a museum for all its discoveries on Delos, and this was inaugurated in 1904. The archaeological digs have continued for more than 145 years, and the museum had to be expanded in 1931 and 1972 to accommodate all of this material.
The oldest pieces here are the ceramics, going back more than 3,500 years.
There are also numerous grave statues and stele from the 7th to the 1st century BC, as well as clay figurines, mosaics, jewellery and everyday items from the Hellenistic Period.
Among the must-sees is a bronze mask of Dionysos from the 2nd century BC, an ivory plaque with a relief of a Mycenaean warrior as old as 1400 BC and a magisterial sculpture of Boreas kidnapping Oreithya from the end of the 5th century BC.
5. Alefkandra (Little Venice)
Around the western lip of the Old Harbour is a gorgeous web of little car-free alleys.
These are laid with the typical dark marble paving stones with cement coated with the same brilliant white paint as the houses.
It’s the waterside that gives Little Venice its nickname, where restaurants open on to a narrow path less than a metre above the sea and tables for couples line the way.
These buildings have slightly shambly wooden bay window boxes and balconies painted in blues and greens.
Facing west, the sunsets are impossibly beautiful, so try to get a table before twilight, and look down round to see the windmills catching the last rays.
Suggested tour : Mykonos and Little Venice Sunset Cruise
6. Old Harbour
After catching the SeaBus from the new port at Tourlos you’ll disembark at the marble quays of the Old Harbour.
On the east side are the arcades of the Town Hall dating to the 1700s, in front of which is the tiny church of Agios Nikolaos, crowned with a blue dome.
There’s a string of bars and restaurants hugging the curve of the harbour and if you investigate the side streets you’ll come across boutiques, design shops and tasteful souvenir stores, shoulder to shoulder with quaint little churches like Agia Eleni and Agios Kirykos.
7. Church of Panagia Paraportiani
Just north of Little Venice, in the Kastro neighbourhood is the fascinating Church of Panagia Paraportiani.
This monument was built between the 15th and 17th century and comprises four separate, interconnected churches beneath a fifth built on top.
That highest church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Panagia) and is easy to pick out for its dome.
The oldest is Agios Anargyros, begun in 1425, while the remaining four churches were all constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Like the Mykonos Windmills it’s a monument that attracts people for the photo opportunities, framing the asymmetrical white walls against the azure sky.
8. Rarity Gallery
Recently Mykonos has gained a reputation as an art destination, and has a lot to do with the Rarity Gallery.
Founded in 1995, this three-room space was the first to present paintings, sculpture, photography and installations by artists of international standing.
On a visit you can expect to see pieces by established names, but may be surprised by less renowned, emerging talent that the gallery has taken under its wing.
Some of the artists featured over the last two decades include pop artist Julian Opie and Carole Feuerman, known for her hyper-realistic sculpture, and Hong Sung Chul, famed for his three dimensional string sculptures.
9. Archaeological Museum of Mykonos
The island’s own modest but engaging archaeological museum has artefacts recovered from Mykonos and adjacent islands, dating from prehistory to the end of the Hellenistic Period around the 1st century BC. In the large collection of ceramics is a pithos (jar) from the 7th century BC with reliefs depicting the capture of Troy.
There’s also exceptionally old Cycladic patterned pottery from as long ago as 2800 BC, preserved funerary steles from the island of Rineia off Delos and black vases from the Ionian Islands.
Another outstanding piece is a statue of Heracles wielding a club, also from Rineia and fashioned from the finest Parian marble in the 2nd Century BC.
10. Agios Sostis Beach
If you’re craving some space to yourself, make for the beaches in the less frequented north of Mykonos, which is scattered with natural parks.
Agios Sostis has no beachfront bars, restaurants or sun beds and is all the better for it: The beach is noticeably quieter than those in the south, and behind is not much more than gently sloping hills with sparsely dusted with scrub.
Head north and there’s a small village with a taverna and church, and another much smaller cove bathed by shallow, glimmering water.
11. Elia Beach
On the other hand you might want to experience Mykonos at its most vibrant and cosmopolitan.
In which case Elia Beach on the south coast is a great pick.
It’s the longest beach on the island, and is the choice of gay tourists to Mykonos.
Ringed by arid slopes, Elia is a bay with golden sand at its centre and shingle beneath the low cliffs to the east.
Naturists also flock to Elia, and even though this beach is one of the most popular on the island it never feels overcrowded as there’s plenty of room for everyone.
You can hire a jet-ski from the jetty at the centre of the beach or hike up the barren slopes past white Cycladic houses to see the bay in all its splendour from above.
12. Dio Horia
Also at the forefront of the island’s contemporary art scene is Dio Horia, a gallery hosting exhibitions, providing residencies and championing young talent from countries outside the art world’s attention.
In the three years since it opened, Dio Horia has exhibited work by Tracey Emin, David Adamo, Erik Parker and Nina Chanel Abney.
Dio Horia also has a publishing arm, and organises events and pop-up installations around Mykonos.
There are upcoming solo shows in 2018 for the well-known contemporary artists Trudy Benson, Peter McDonald and Raul de Nieves.
13. Kalo Livadi Beach
In the southeast of Mykonos Kalo Livadi is a supreme sandy beach fronting a picturesque valley with clusters of white houses.
A few hundred metres from the coast, the beach has a soft gradient, allowing children to play in the shallows and confident swimmers to venture a long way out without worrying about currents.
The shore has regimented blocks of sun loungers, six deep and divided by wooden walkways.
These are rented out by the restaurants behind and can be pretty pricey, but are worth every penny if you want full service.
If you prefer to go your own way, there’s a patch under the rocks on the west end of the beach where you can lay your towel.
On the west side is a boat charter company with its own jetty if you’re up for a self-navigated voyage.
14. Kalafatis Beach
Two beaches over from Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis is another alluring sandy bay with an arc of golden sand and shallow, clear waters.
What sets this beach apart is that it is oriented to the east, and not far offshore there are generous breezes.
So while you recline on your sun lounger you’ll see windsurfing sails zipping across the horizon.
Joining them in summer are some snazzy-looking yachts anchored in the bay.
Kalafatis also has a watersports centre for motorised activities like wakeboarding, waterskiing and jet-skiing.
On the northern edge of the bay is a quay with waterfront restaurant and where tour boats set off for cruises.
15. Armenistis Lighthouse
Six kilometres north of Chora is a working lighthouse guiding traffic along the strait between Mykonos and neighbouring Tinos.
Positioned far above the water, this edifice was completed with an octagonal tower in 1891 and flashes a white signal every ten seconds.
It was raised in response to a disaster in which the Volta steam ship sank off the north coast of Mykonos in 1887, at the cost of 11 lives.
If you’d like to see the original Fresnel lens, it has ended up at the Mykonos Maritime Museum.
Although you can’t go inside, the lighthouse is a trip worth making for the awesome scenery.
This is best done just after sunset when you can see the lights of Agios Sostis and Laouti on the other side of the strait.

One Day in Mykonos From Cruise Ship: The Perfect Itinerary
Are you looking for a one-day Mykonos cruise ship itinerary for your next Mediterranean cruise ? Then I got you covered!
Mykonos was my favorite stop on my 7-day cruise through the Eastern Mediterranean Sea – and I will make sure you will love it just as much.
There is so much to see and do on this small island that it can be hard to choose from. Mykonos is relatively small, with only 10.000 inhabitants living on the island.
But with only one day to explore this amazing island, how do you make the most of your precious time?
I have been to Mykonos on a cruise and have absolutely loved my day there. To make sure you have an amazing experience as well, I have created this ultimate guide to help you have an unforgettable day in Mykonos.
Let’s dive in!
Table of Contents
The mykonos cruise port, one day in mykonos from cruise ship – your options, 1. the best tours and day trips in mykonos, 2. exploring chora, 3. see the windmills of mykonos, 3. explore little venice, 5. visit archaeological sites, 7. relax on the best beaches of mykonos, best lunch spots in mykonos, how to get around mykonos, conclusion: one day in mykonos from cruise ship, more 1 day cruise itineraries, faq: one day in mykonos from cruise ship, about the author.

First, let’s start by locating the cruise port. The busiest port in Mykonos is in Tourlos, which welcomes large cruise ships from April through October. It is located near Agios Stefanos Beach.
From there, you can either take a public bus to Chora, the island’s main town or hire a taxi for a relatively short ride there. It is about 1.2 miles (3.5 kilometers) of driving time. It costs about EUR 10,00 to get to town.
Alternatively, you can also walk, but it takes about 30 minutes and there are no sidewalks.
Or if you’re feeling adventurous, rent a scooter or ATV and get ready to explore the island a little deeper.
When coming to Mykonos on a cruise ship, you’ll have a couple of options when deciding what to do. The island is not too big, so you can easily discover most of it on the shore day.
Here are some of your options when coming to Mykonos:
- Book a guided day tour or shore excursion
- Visit the capital city of Chora and Little Venice
- Hike up to the windmills of Mykonos
- Check out the stunning beaches of Mykonos
- Discover archeological sites
If you choose to book a guided day trip or a tour in Mykonos, you need to make sure it has a good cancellation policy. Cruise ships do not always dock punctually, and sometimes ports of call even get canceled due to bad weather on the way.
I usually book all my trips with Viator. They are usually amazing and affordable – and you can cancel them without paying a penalty. Perfect for cruisers.
Plus – they usually offer cruise ship pickup so you don’t need to organize a thing.
If you don’t want to find your own way around the island, this is your best option.
Here is my selections of the best tours in Mykonos:

Another cool thing to do in Mykonos is explore the charming alleys of Chora, also known as Mykonos Town.
Chora is the picturesque capital city of the island. You can find it on its northwest coast. It’s known for its whitewashed homes and cobblestone streets .
Chora is home to about 600 – 800 little historic churches, you can spot them by the little cross on the rooftops.
My favorite feature of Chora is the bright pink bougainvillea plants that make the small alleys even more picturesque.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy in Chora, including shopping at the boutique stores along Matoyianni Street . You can also check out the famous galleries and museums. I loved the secondhand designer stores in Mykonos, they had amazing products at a great price point.
Chora has several museums worth visiting, such as the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos and the Aegean Maritime Museum . The best galleries to visit are the Lifeline Art Studio and Municipal Art Gallery
If you are interested in a big dose of culture, you might want to visit Virgin Tourliani / Panagia Tourliani . It is a famous monastery that has a fabulous marble fountain and lots of interesting artifacts.
The Kato Mili windmills are one of the most iconic landmarks of Mykonos and something that needs to be on your one-day-in-Mykonos itinerary. Not only are they super picturesque but you also have an amazing view from the windmills.
The windmills are conveniently located on a hill super close to Chora (Mykonos Town). From the windmills, you can see Little Venice and the Aegean Sea.
The iconic windmills were built by the Venetians in the 16th century . Back in the day, they were used to grind wheat and barley into flour, which the island people depended on.
Today, they are no longer operational. But they are among the most visited landmarks in Mykonos.
To see the Kato Mili windmills, you will need to climb a few stairs to reach them. I found the stairs not too intense, but you do need to wear good shoes. Alternatively, you can take a taxi or rent a scooter or ATV to reach the windmills. Keep in mind that there are only 30 taxis in Mykonos , so you might wait a while.
Little Venice is one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Mykonos and it is my favorite spot on the island. You can find Little Venice in the western part of Mykonos Town.
Here are some of my favorite things to do in Little Venice:
Little Venice is known for its charming houses and restaurant terraces that overlook the sea. Enjoy the stunning views while you relax in one of the many cafes and restaurants in the area. Sipping a cocktail or a coffee by the ocean with my loved one is my number one favorite activity on any trip.
Visit the Panagia Paraportiani Church : This famous church is located in Little Venice and is one of the most photographed landmarks in Mykonos. It is a unique example of Cycladic architecture, with a whitewashed exterior and four chapels. Translated it is called “Our Lady of the Side Gate”.
Little Venice is home to many bars and clubs that offer live music and fabulous cocktails. It’s a great place to experience the vibrant nightlife of Mykonos. This of course is only a consideration if your cruise ship stays overnight in Mykonos.
Mykonos is not particularly known for its archaeological sites. But there are still a couple of interesting archaeological sites that you can visit on the island.
Here are my favorite historical sites to visit in Mykonos:
🌴 Delos is a small uninhabited island located just a few kilometers southwest of Mykonos. The site includes temples, sanctuaries, markets, and residential areas . Super interesting and only a short boat ride away.
🌴 Kastro Panigiraki is an old castle and fort with high stone walls. It is located right outside of Mykonos Town. It is mainly famous for housing the Anemos Windmill.
🌴 Ftelia Archaeological Site is located on the northern coast of Mykonos which was once a significant settlement in the Neolithic period. The Site is located on a beach and shows ruins of houses and other interesting structures.
I suggest including at least one of these sites in your one-day Mykonos itinerary – since it is a great chance to learn about the history and culture of the small island.
The best beaches in Mykonos are nothing short of amazing! Whether you’re looking for a secluded spot or a more fun atmosphere, Mykonos has it all!
Here are my favorite beaches to visit during your one day in Mykonos:
🏝️ Paradise Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Mykonos. With soft golden sand and clear blue water, there’s plenty to do here. Enjoy sunbathing, swimming, jet skiing, windsurfing and more! It also has lots of beach bars and restaurants.
🏝️ Elia Beach is located on the south side of the island and is perfect for relaxing in the sun. It is a lot quieter than the other beaches of Mykonos.
🏝️ Agios Sostis Beach is another quiet and peaceful spot located in northern Mykonos. This glorious beach is backed by mountains and offers some stunning turquoise waters.
🏝️ Super Paradise Beach is home to some of the best parties on Mykonos. It is quite fun in the day, but I feel like it is a bit crowded in the evenings.
🏝️ Agios Ioannis Beach is a beautiful, quiet beach located on the southwestern coast of Mykonos. It offers stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the island of Delos.
🏝️ Psarou Beach is a beautiful sandy beach that is popular among celebrities and VIPs, so you have probably seen it on Instagram. Here are fancy restaurants and beach clubs.

There are so many great restaurants in Mykonos that serve delicious lunches and traditional cuisine. After a fun day exploring, what could be more refreshing than a big bowl of traditional tzatziki?
Here are some of my favorite restaurants:
🍹 Kiki’s Tavern: Located on the beach of Agios Sostis, Kiki’s Tavern is a famous seafood restaurant that serves fresh fish and grilled meats. It has a relaxed and casual atmosphere and stunning views. Fun fact: they do not offer Wifi or electricity so people can actually enjoy the view without being disturbed by phones.
🍹 Captain’s: Super cute and authentic restaurant. They offer the so-called mezze-eating: little tapas and finger food are served and shared with the entire table.
🍹 Spilia Seaside Restaurant: This restaurant is located on a small platform of rocks in Agia Anna, and it serves Mediterranean cuisine. The setting is unique and romantic, making it a popular spot for couples. It is also one of the most iconic Mykonos hotspots, so it can get quite full. Keep in mind that they only open at 2:00 pm so it might be a late lunch.
🍹 Avli Thou Thodori: a small restaurant located on Platis Gialos Beach offering a breathtaking view and a big variety of local dishes. They are especially famous for their seafood dishes.
🍹 Nikolas Taverna: Nikolas Taverna is a family-run restaurant that serves delicious homemade Greek food. The menu includes dishes such as moussaka, stuffed tomatoes, and grilled lamb.
🍹 Kastro’s Cafe in Mykonos is probably the most famous hot spot on the island. It is mainly known for being located in a small alley right by the water.
🍹 Kyklamino : A family-run business specializing in sweet delights. Make sure to stop by for a yummy dessert!
These are just a few of the many great lunch restaurants in Mykonos. My favorite place to have lunch is in Little Venice, it is simply so cute and picturesque.
There are several ways to get around Mykonos, depending on your preferences and budget. Of course, you also need to keep in mind that your cruise ship will dock outside the bigger cities.
Here are some of the best options on how to get around Mykonos:
- Walking: Mykonos Town is a pedestrian-friendly area. T he small alleys are best explored on foot. Walking is a great way to discover the hidden corners of the town and to enjoy the charming architecture and atmosphere. However, I would not recommend walking from the cruise ship to town, since there are no sidewalks.
- Public Transportation: There are buses that run regularly between Mykonos Town and other parts of the island. The buses are reliable and affordable, and the routes cover most of the popular destinations on the island. Since your cruise ship will most likely only be in town for a few hours, I would not recommend this option either. Flexibility is key when you want to see a lot of the island in little time.
- Taxis: Taxis are available throughout Mykonos, and can be found at taxi stands in Mykonos Town and other popular locations. There are also taxis available at the cruise port. Taxis are a convenient and comfortable way to get around the island, but they can be more expensive than other options. Also, there are only 30 taxis on the entire island, so it might take a while to find one.
- Scooter/ATV rental: Renting a scooter or ATV is my favorite thing to do when exploring an island, There are many rental shops in Mykonos Town and they even offer rentals right at the cruise port usually. It is cheap and flexible and a fun adventure.
- Car Rental: Renting a car is another great option if you want to be more flexible but a bit safer than on a scooter. There are many car rental companies in Mykonos, and rental prices are reasonable . However, driving in Mykonos can be challenging due to the narrow and winding roads. If you choose to rent a car, I suggest you get a very small one, because parking can be a hassle.
Overall, there are many options for getting around Mykonos, and the choice depends on your preferences, budget, and itinerary. My favorite option is definitely renting an ATV, and I can wholeheartedly recommend that for Mykonos.
Mykonos is a magical little island in Greece that will captivate your heart with its stunning beaches, historic landmarks, and delicious food.
Even with just one day, you can enjoy an unforgettable experience by exploring its hidden gems and exploring the cute towns.
One day may not be enough to see the entire island, but this guide will surely help you make the most out of your one day in Mykonos on a cruise! See the famous windmills, the charming town of Little Venice and the impressive churches of Mykonos in just one day.

One day in Mykonos is definitely enough to get a taste of the island. Start by exploring the beautiful town of Mykonos with its iconic Greek architecture and breathtaking views. Take a stroll through Little Venice catch glimpses of the famous windmills and explore the 15th-century Greek Orthodox Paraportiani church. If you wish to explore the island more, I suggest staying for at least 5 days.
It greatly depends on what your plans are. If you wish to do some sightseeing and eat a light lunch, you can expect to be spending no more than 50 USD. If you wish for more luxury it can be anywhere from USD 100 and upwards.
Yes, Mykonos Town is walkable. The town is not very big and everything is close by. You can reach the famous windmills in only a couple of steps. From the cruise port to Mykonos town, you might want to catch a cab.
I prefer Santorini over Mykonos. The island is a bit bigger and has more to offer. While Mykonos has some amazing spots, it is mainly attracting partygoers and jet setters. Santorini does have a lot more cultural and historical sites to offer.
The best months to go on a cruise to Mykonos are May, June, and September. I have been in April and it was a little bit too chilly to swim. In July and August, it can be too hot and too touristy, so I would not recommend going then.

Greece itineraries: 5 ways to see the islands and mainland
Sep 5, 2024 • 10 min read
See the best of Greece and its islands with these travel itineraries. Adrienne Pitts for Lonely Planet
With endless islands and a magical mainland, the hardest decision you'll make in Greece is deciding where to go. You could spend your days ticking off the best things to do , seeking out locals' favorite spots , or hanging out on beautiful beaches – or a combination of all of three. That's why we've shared five different itineraries to help you see the most of Greece. These jam-packed routes allow you to cram the most into 7, 8 or 9 days. But if you have more time, extend your stays at different stops (or combine two itineraries) to build the two-week or even three-week Greece itinerary of your dreams.
Whatever you desire, start planning your perfect trip to Greece.
Cruising the Cyclades
Allow at least 7 days Distance: 100km (62 miles)
First trip to Greece and looking for island ideas ? Here's a string of the Cyclades' best islands , most beautiful beaches, cultural highs and unique village life. Mixing and matching is easy when island hopping, so a diversion anywhere along the way just adds to the fun.
Tinos: 1 day
For a smaller-island feel, start in Tinos . Tranquil, with just one main town famous for its holy pilgrimage church and its marble carvers, it's ideal for foodies and those in search of an arty peace. Some of the deep coves are accessible only on foot or by small boat. At the end of the day, villages swell with people tucking into superb island-grown fare, some of the best in Greece.
Next stop: Take a ferry from Tinos to Paros (1.5 hours).
Paros: 2 days
Ferry into welcoming Paros to get a taste of quintessentially Cycladic white-cube towns and crowd- and kid-pleasing beaches, all accessible from a handy ring-road.
Detour: For social butterflies and lovers of action, ferry to glam-packed Mykonos from Paros before heading on to Naxos. There, you can add on epic archaeology at the sacred islet Delos with its fascinating ancient ruined sanctuaries and treasury of the Delian League (add 1 day).
Next stop: Take a ferry from Paros to Naxos (50 minutes).
Naxos: 2 days
By far one of Greece's most diverse islands, Naxos holds everything from stone-cragged peaks to mountain villages, ancient ruins and soft white-sand beaches. Either base yourself at its zany-laned Hora , with hilltop kastro (fort) and restaurants, or at the beach – and hire wheels to see more.
Detour: Take a 3-hour ferry from Naxos to busy but spectacular Santorini to revel as you float in the middle of a volcanic caldera, water sparkling and whitewashed villages perched above (add 1 day).
Next stop: Take a ferry from Naxos to Small Cyclades (45 minutes).
Small Cyclades: 2 days
Relax on the open-deck small ferry as you take the short ride to Koufonisia the swankiest of the Small Cyclades , where you can balance meals of handmade pasta with walks along the shore to swimming holes and beaches with crystal-clear waters. If time permits, keep going… Schinoussa is a wonderland of dirt tracks leading to beaches ringing the whole islet, and Iraklia is the island that the world forgot.
The mainland's ancient sights
Allow at least 8 days Distance: 900km (559 miles)
This in-depth culture trip takes in iconic ancient sites and Greece's thrilling multifaceted history. Trace the trail from Ancient Greece to more modern marauders while touring some of the country's most beautiful terrain. It's best done with your own wheels and with extra days added to hike or simply sip a drink on a shade-dappled terrace.
Athens: 2 days
Begin in Athens , the mother of it all, and visit grand ancient sites from the Acropolis and Ancient Agora to the Roman Agora and Filopappou Hill. Dip into world-class museums, such as the National Archaeological Museum , Acropolis Museum, Byzantine & Christian Museum, Cycladic Museum – the list goes on – before diving into markets, the contemporary-arts scene and award-winning restaurants . Get your party on before heading to the hinterlands.
Next stop: Drive from Athens to Delphi (3 hours).
Delphi: 1 day
Hop in the car early and drive northwest to ancient Delphi , the former home of the mysterious Delphic oracle. Morning is a magical time at Delphi, as the sun's rays pour over the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia . As you gaze out over the Gulf of Corinth, it's easy to understand why the Ancient Greeks chose this as the center of their world.
Next stop: Drive from Delphi to Ioannina (4 hours).
Ioannina: 1 day
After passing through a seemingly endless array of tunnels, the Egnatia Odos Hwy brings you into rugged Epiros, home of the Pindos Mountains and lovely lakeside Ioannina . Go straight to the center to stay and stroll, visiting Ali Pasha's castle and perusing the Ottoman-era architecture and the car-free island in the lake with its historic monastery.
Next stop: Drive from Ioannina to Zagorohoria (45 minutes).
Zagorohoria: 1 day
Make a day trip – or stay overnight if you have time – to Zagorohoria , an immaculately preserved region of slate-stone villages spread along the ridges of Europe’s deepest canyon, the Vikos Gorge . Here, the air is clear, fresh and cool, and the views are astounding. You can explore by hiking or mountain-biking, or simply get cozy by the fire in one of the region's many rustic B&Bs.
Next stop: Drive from Zagorohoria to Meteora (2.5 hours).
Meteora: 1 day
Magnificent Meteora will leave you speechless. Soaring pillars of rock jut heavenward, a handful complete with monasteries perched on their summits. Built as early as the 14th century, these were home to monks fleeing persecution. The rope ladders that once enabled the monks to reach the top have long been replaced by steps carved into the rock, and six of the 24 monasteries are open to visitors.
Next stop: Drive from Meteora to Thessaloniki (3 hours).
Thessaloniki: 2 days
You can motor to the cultured seafront city Thessaloniki along the coast, by the fabled slopes of Mt Olympus , Greece's highest peak, or inland via the Vergina Royal Tombs , where you descend to unspoiled royal Macedonian burial sites crammed with riches. Wrap up with a seaside sojourn in Thessaloniki, with its vibrant arts scene, by sipping coffee, dining in high style and sampling local sweets.
Northeastern magic
Allow at least 8 days Distance: 600km (373 miles)
For intrepid travelers without a tight time schedule, a leisurely start in Thessaloniki followed by a jaunt through Greece’s northeastern islands rewards with languid coasts, lush scenery and divine beaches, as well as some amazing historic sights. Scheduled ferries are regular but not always very frequent – thankfully you won’t be in any hurry.
Thessaloniki: 1 day
Lose yourself in Ottoman-style architecture and a vibrant arts scene in sunny seaside Thessaloniki. It's also a place with a storied cafe culture, offering a chance to dine in high style and sample local sweets without breaking the bank.
Next stop: Fly from Thessaloniki to Lesvos (1.25 hours).
Detour: Drive an hour from Thessaloniki to spend a day at Vergina Royal Tombs , where you descend to unspoiled Macedonian royal burials crammed with riches. Alternatively hit the beaches on Halkidiki's Sithonian peninsula (add half a day).
Lesvos: 2 days
Lesvos is the birthplace of the poet Sappho and producer of some of Greece’s finest olive oil and ouzo. Mytilini, the island’s capital and port, serves up an arty scene with excellent eating and drinking, featuring said olive oil and ouzo. Also check out the well-preserved Ottoman-era town of Molyvos and the hilltop Byzantine monastery Moni Ypsilou . Lesvos’ salt marshes, gushing hot springs, dense forests and beaches beckon, too.
Next stop: Take a ferry from Lesvos to Chios (3 hours).
Chios: 2 days
Sail to Chios and get lost in the labyrinth of stone alleyways in the southern village of Mesta and the storied hamlets of Mastihohoria. Leave a little extra time for the beloved Chios Mastic Museum , which details the cultivation and refinement of the island's trademark resin, then hike through the interior's citrus groves under the shade of towering mountain peaks.
Next stop: Take a ferry from Chios to Samos (roughly 3 hours).
Samos: 2 days
Ferry south to Samos where you can hike through lush forests to secluded waterfalls and laze on idyllic beaches. Take a morning to follow the 10km (6-mile) Muscat Vineyards Path dedicated to the island’s production of sweet wine. Or if you're feeling spry, you can learn how to windsurf on Kokkari beach, known for its reliable winds.
Next stop: Take a ferry from Samos to Ikaria (1.25 hours).
Ikaria: 1 day
Keep winding down in Ikaria on isolated stretches of soft sand. Or, if you're on the island in the summer, amp up instead by joining in the Ikarian culture of dancing, drinking and feasting during panigyria (all-night celebrations held on saints’ days across the island). Could this be the secret to the islanders' great longevity ?
Detour: Wrap up with a short hop to the serene Fourni Islands, a former pirates’ lair with surreal sunsets (add 1 day).
Ionian islands and the Peloponnese
Allow at least 9 days Distance: 700km (434 miles)
If you’ve a hankering for island life along with beautiful medieval towns, ancient sights and dramatic scenery, a tour of the Ionian Islands and the neighboring Peloponnese fits the bill. This is doubly true if you’re keen to discover the Graeco-Italian cuisine of this island chain and toss in beaches and outdoor activities along the way.
Corfu: 2 days
Begin on Corfu , spending a couple of days wandering through the amazing blend of Italian, French and British architecture in Corfu’s Old Town, indulging in gourmet cuisine, exploring picturesque coastal villages and lounging on sandy beaches. Corfu is also great for windsurfing or cycling in the mountainous interior.
Next stop: Take a ferry from Corfu to Lefkada (roughly 6 hours).
Lefkada: 1 day
Lefkada Town is a charming place to spend a day, or you could visit a village in the mountainous interior for delicious taverna fare. But perhaps the highlights of Lefkada are its gigantic beaches along the west coast. Pure-white pebbles make for glorious eye candy as you see them stretch to the azure seas. Stay a while.
Next stop: Take a ferry from Vasiliki, Lefkada to Fiskardo, Kefallonia (1 hour).
Kefallonia: 2 days
It's a short ferry ride to wild and interesting Kefallonia . Start with a visit to the picturesque harbor of Fiskardo then head south to paddle kayaks between beaches lapped by gentle, luminous seas, scuba dive in sparkling waters blushing with fish, explore pretty villages surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, and hike up mountains that spiral high into the sky.
Next stop: Take a ferry from Kefallonia to Kyllini, Peloponnese, then drive from Kyllini to Ancient Olympia (2-hour ferry, 1-hour drive).
Ancient Olympia: 1 day
Ferry across to the Peloponnesian port at Kyllini and make your way inland to Ancient Olympia , where you can stand in the stadium that hosted the first Olympic Games and imagine the roar of the crowd. The Olympic flame is still lit here for the modern Games. Stay overnight in the town to allow time, too, to take in the site's excellent museums crammed with masterpieces.
Next stop: Drive from Ancient Olympia to Mystras (around 2 hours).
Mystras and Mycenae: 1 day
Drive south to the captivating World Heritage–listed ruins of Mystras . This massive ancient fortress town was the last stronghold of the Byzantine Empire. A court of the Byzantine imperial family for two centuries, it combines well with a visit to the citadel of Ancient Mycenae , with its immense beehive-shaped royal tomb of the Treasury of Atreus, en route to Nafplio.
Next stop: Drive from Mystras to Nafplio (2 hours).
Nafplio: 2 days
The perfect place to end, graceful Nafplio beckons, with its Venetian-era mansions, interesting museums and lively port and cafe scene. It's a natural spot for romantics and families alike.
Crete and the Dodecanese
Allow at least 7 days Distance: 1000km (621 miles)
Grand, multifaceted Crete boasts an immense range of experiences , relaxed beaches and impressive sights . Sample the island's equally varied cuisine at every stop along the way. From Crete it’s a short flight to the neighboring Dodecanese, with their wealth of culture and speedy catamaran services that make island-hopping a breeze.
Hania: 1 day
Fly in to Hania , Crete, with its charming harbor and labyrinth of pretty walking lanes, perfect for adjusting to a Greek rhythm and beginning your culinary tour at the town's stellar restaurants. Simply strolling the Venetian fortifications and popping into shops and the fascinating archaeological museum will fill your time. Or grab a newspaper (yes, a newspaper!) and sit portside at a cafe.
Next stop: Drive from Hania to Omalos to access Samaria Gorge (1.25 hours).
Southern Gorges and coast: 1 day
Discover the island's wild side on a trek through the famous Samaria Gorge or one of its brethren, which spill out onto beaches lapped by the clear waters of the Libyan Sea. This southwest coastline is dotted with remote, attractive villages – brilliant spots to take it easy for a few days.
Next stop: Drive from Samaria Gorge to Balos (2 hours).
Western beaches: 1 day
The rugged Gramvousa Peninsula cradles the lagoon-like sandy beach of Balos, whose shallow, shimmering turquoise waters draw huge crowds in summer. Continuing south, ride the waves at the broad sweep of Falasarna beach : with pink-cream sands and teal waters it's known for its stunning sunsets. Finally, enter the dreamscape of Elafonisi , a symphony of fine pink sand, cerulean water and gentle rose dunes.
Next stop: Drive from Elafonisi to Iraklio (3.5 hours).
Iraklio and Knossos: 1 day
Take a one-way car hire to Iraklio , Crete's vibrant capital, and visit its excellent archaeological museum in preparation for the quick drive to the captivating Minoan ruins of Knossos. On the way back, sample fine vintages in Iraklio Wine Country, a mosaic of shapely hills, sun-baked slopes and lush valleys. If you can add an extra day to your itinerary, dash east to the relaxed resort town Agios Nikolaos and explore the Venetian fortress on Spinalonga Island .
Next stop: Fly from Iraklio to Rhodes (1 hour).
Rhodes: 2 days
Either fly to Rhodes or get settled on a twice weekly, 12-hour ferry ride from Sitia. On historic Rhodes in the Dodecanese, spend a couple of days exploring its atmospheric, walled medieval Old Town, enjoying its nightlife and visiting its beaches and stunning Acropolis of Lindos.
Next stop: Take a ferry from Rhodes to Patmos (6.5 hours).
Patmos: 1 day
Jump on the ferry to end your tour in Patmos. Experience its artistic and religious vibe, and visit the cave where St John wrote the Book of Revelations . The hour-glass-shaped island is renowned for its beautiful villages, including the picturesque harbor community of Skala. Barely disturbed bays lined with sand and pebble beaches, and gorgeous pine- and heather-coated hillsides round out the picture.
