I purchased a tour to Pearl Harbor through Royal Hawaiian Tours. The tour included transportation and tickets for entry of the memorials for a self-guided tour. The transportation provided was prompt, and the driver was courteous and provided fun facts of places as we approached them. The motor coach I rode in had stained cloth seats which triggered my OCD. For future tours I hope they clean the seats with a stain remover. I deducted one star because of the stained seats.

The lady was interesting but we stood 10 to 15 minutes in at least 4 spots just standing there!! Yes it was interesting, but standing in one place that long was a bore. I suggest making the tours earlier in the day. Having a tour after lunch is the worst time of day to stand and listen. Had the tour been at 11:00 am instead of 1:00pm and we moved a little more or had a chance to sit and listen i would have given it 5 stars. The content was good. Delivery was lacking.

***** I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT YOU DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY FOR TRANSPORTATION SERVICES **** We hired a 10 seater (4 adults, 4 children) Mercedes limo and driver for 6 hours through Tom. The price quoted was $755.00, not including the tip. When we booked our reservation, we specifically questioned company policy about being able to eat and drink (alcoholic beverages) in the limo. Tom told us we could, even saying they would provide the soft drinks and ice. The driver arrived promptly at 10:00 a..m. We began to load our belongings into the limo, when we were informed by the driver that we couldn't eat or drink in the vehicle. We decided to head out anyway, figuring the driver just hadn't been informed about our specific arrangements. When one of the members of our party contacted Tom from the limo to work out the issue, Tom was very rude. He made sarcastic comments and hung up on our friend! At that point, we really felt we should turn back and make other plans for the day but we didn't want to disappoint the kids, so we continued on. This company is only concerned about 1 thing.....$$$$$$! Would never use them again!

DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE. I had a terrible experience using Honolulu Airport Shuttle, operated by Royal Hwaiian Limousine. I ordered a rear facing infant car seat for both my pick-up and return to the airport. My child is 11 months old. At pick-up, the driver brought a booster seat, not an infant seat. He had to return to dispatch to pick up the proper seat. As a result, we were 1.5 hours late to our destination. Booster seats are used for children, not babies. I called Hawaii Airport Shuttle TWICE before our return to the airport to confirm that a rear facing infant seat would be provided. Still, our driver brought an infant seat that was only able to be installed in the forward direction (not all car seats are manufactured for backward facing installation. The car seat label clearly said it was for forward use only) and was only made for children over 30 pounds (my son is not). Any traffic stop or incident in which a child is not properly restrained in Hawaii will result in a penalty for the driver. Those who violate passenger-safety laws must attend a four-hour class and are liable for fines ranging from $100 to $500 depending on prior offenses, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation website. I request my money paid for the car seat be refunded. John, the service manager, disagreed with my claim, hung up on me 8 times during my complaint and threatened to call the police if I kept calling about my issue.

***DO NOT USE*** There is nothing Royal or Hawaiian about this firm. Tom the Sales Manager is incredibly rude, and apprarently does not know the meaning of customer service. Our flight into Honolulu Airport was delayed 7 hours and Tom refused to guarantee if he could get a driver there to pick up. He sarcastically commented that "it's not my fault your flight is delayed' and when explaining we were just trying to figure out our options, he told us just to call upon arrival. Yere...that is great. We have four small children and the whole idea behind arranging the service is to not have to worry about trying to get a cab. He sarcastically commented that "we all have children" to worry about. So in the seven hours our flight was delayed and the five hours of flying time, he never contacted us via phone, email or text to confirm availability. We ended up catching a taxi upon arrival and then received a barrage of phone calls from Tom enquiring where were we? His driver was waiting!! All Tom need to do was send that email BEFORE we arrived. This was just a cheap trick to not have to refund our $$$. It was only then that Tom took the opportunity to write a long pathetic email titled "It was sad what you did to us Tonight". Three reviews so far and all one star...please listen. Hopefully this company will not be ripping people off too much longer.

I booked a private tour of Pearl Harbor and Honolulu for my wife and I through Royal Hawaiian in Oahu. Chris (the tour guide & driver) picked us up in an extremely clean Lincoln MKX. The USS Arizona Memorial was closed due to the gov't shutdown (which RH called the night before to explain to me) but they offered to pay for our tickets to board the USS Missouri instead (obviously, there was nothing RH could do otherwise). Luckily for us, some wonderful folks from the Pearl Harbor Memorial Society (not sure if I remember their name correctly) had set up a very moving presentation for the USS Arizona at the end of the Pier overlooking the Arizona memorial. Afterwards, Chris took us on a Honolulu city tour that lasted an additional 3 hours (5 total hours). Chris was very knowledgeable about his city and state and very pleasant to spend the day with. I would recommend this tour to anyone coming to Hawaii for the first time (our 2nd trip to Hawaii but first time to Oahu). We did this tour on our first day here so I feel like I have a very good understanding of the city and the layout for the remainder of our trip.

Photo of L. L.

We hired RHT for transportation to the USS Arizona. Our driver was on time, incredibly knowledgeable about the city and super nice. We had a full van including 2 kiddos, and I was pleasantly surprised that they had a booster seat in the back of the van just in case. My daughter can sit in just a seatbelt but I prefer her in a booster, so that was a nice bonus. They had drinks and pastries for us before we went into the memorial. She offered to take some group pictures (which actually turned out GREAT!) and showed us the lay of the land and confirmed our pickup from the USS Arizona for the city tour. Everything was seamless and accurate and it was WAY better than trying to deal with the tickets and navigating there on our own. We had lots of pleasant conversation and learned a lot about the city/state in the tour after and the drive back to the resort. She was very adept and using what backroads were possible, though the traffic is what it is. When we booked we already had airport transportation arranged through another company, but I wouldn't hesitate to book with them if we ended up down there again. Thumbs up, they really helped make our morning and time to Pearl Harbor fantastic.

Porte Cochere

A Royal Past

Long before Waikiki was developed as a tourist destination, it was a favorite residence and recreational center for Hawaiian kings and chiefs. King Kamehameha I had his home where The Royal Hawaiian stands today, and Queen Kaahumanu’s Summer Palace was previously located on what is now the resort’s Coconut Grove.

Foreign visitors began to visit Waikiki in the 1830s, and a road was constructed in the 1860s. With an anticipation of an increase in visitors, our sister resort the Moana Hotel opened in 1901.

Simultaneously, the territorial government in 1907, under what it called the “Waikiki Reclamation Commission,” planned for greater commercial and tourism development by widening streets, building bridges, and draining the duck ponds, rice paddies, and taro patches that formed Waikiki’s aquaculture. Development accelerated after World War I.

During the times of the Charleston and Prohibition, the method of transportation to Hawaii was aboard a Matson steamship, providing a rather unattractive and unappealing method of travel for the rich who could afford overseas luxury and adventure. It became known as the gateway to the exotic faraway destinations of the South Pacific and the Orient.

On February 1, 1927, The Royal Hawaiian Hotel opened – a $4 million investment by the Matson Navigation Co., the brainchild of Ed Tenney, who headed the “big five” firm of Castle and Cooke and Matson Navigation, and Matson manager William Roth. It was made to be a luxurious resort for Matson passengers.

The first general manager of the hotel, Arthur Benaglia, presided over a staff of 300, including ten elevator operators and lobby boys dressed in “Cathayan” costume. At the grand opening’s black-tie gala celebration, members of the Honolulu Symphony entertained over 1,200 guests at the $10-a-plate event-of-the-year. The Honolulu Star-Bulletin described the newly opened hotel as “the first resort hostelry in America.”

Built on 15 acres of beautiful beach frontage, the luxurious hotel with its distinctive Moorish-style architecture, painted pink, was promoted world-wide as a premier visitor destination. Elaborate opening ceremonies and festivities included dinner and dancing, concerts, and pageants.

The era of opulence came to an abrupt end on the morning of December 7, 1941 when Japanese planes flew alongside Waikiki Beach on its way to the US fleet berthed at Pearl Harbor. The Navy recreation and morale office leased The Royal Hawaiian, transforming the resort into a major rest and relaxation center for the Navy personnel. The resort was restored to its pre-war elegance in 1947.

In the 1950s, many new moderately priced hotels were built in the Waikiki area, including SurfRider and Princess Kaiulani, built by the Matson Company. As larger and faster planes reduced the flying time from the mainland to Hawaii, fewer and fewer vacationers wanted to spend 4.5 days aboard a Matson ship each way. Although more than half of all the tourists who came to Hawaii in 1955 stayed in one of Matson’s four hotels, only a fifth came by ship.

By 1959, jet service had reduced the flying time even more, which further eroded the steamers’ business. That same year, after 32 years in hotel business, the company sold its first hotels (Moana, Royal, SurfRider and Princess Kaiulani) to the Sheraton hotel chain for $17.6 million.

In 2015, the now 17-story Mailani Tower opened, gracefully bridging the sumptuous splendor of the property’s original allure, with the conveniences and comforts expected by modern travelers.

Today, The Royal Hawaiian and its associates continue to carry on the legacy of the rich heritage and inspiring and distinctive character of the “Pink Palace of the Pacific.”

While on the enchanting island of Oahu, our concierge team has a number of recommendations for a truly unforgettable trip. The Arizona Memorial, for an example, is both educational and stirring. A non-profit association cooperating with the National Park Service, the bookstore at the USS Arizona Memorial provides visitors with thought-provoking material on Pearl Harbor and World War II in the Pacific. For some fun in the sun, guests at our Hawaii luxury resort are encouraged to take part in the Aha Aina Luau Show, which features tempting dishes of local fare and traditional dancing just off Waikiki Beach. Continue on your quest for all things Hawaiian during a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Hawaii’s most popular attraction, the Center offers hands-on experiences with the villages of the seven Polynesian islands, a Polynesian dinner buffet, and a spectacular evening show, Horizons. On a leisurely afternoon, take a drive around the island and enjoy the turtles, whales, and waves just off Oahu’s magnificent shores. The Honolulu Zoo is another must-see attraction and is favored by both the young and young at heart. The zoo includes 42 lush tropical acres where lions, tigers, and bears make their home. A children’s zoo, African Savannah exhibit, playground, and snack bar complete the visit.
