What Our Customers Say

Best day ever. The only operator to choose for whale watching. Very comfortable and luxurious boat, plenty of room for all passengers. The team of WhaleWatch WA are wonderful providing the most amazing experience I’ve had whale watching.

So much excitement when we sighted a pod of Orcas very early in the day and were able to see them and other pods for the entire time out. These amazing wild animals provided a great experience for us all.

The team onboard are very knowledgeable about all the habits and preferences of the orca. They show great respect to these wild animals in their own habitat and it was a pleasure and an honour to be part of this experience.

Aussietravellers1 (Tripadvisor)

Absolutely amazing day! Spent today watching a pod of 100 Orcas hunting, eating salmon (very posh) playing and entertaining us. These gentle giants are so beautiful.

The boat is beautiful spotlessly clean, comfortable and perfect. Food and drinks provided all day. The staff are amazing knowledgeable, attentive, patient, friendly. They looked after the couple of people who were abit “green around the gills”. 100% recommendation! Thank you so much.

Dianne V (Tripadvisor)

The boat was great, the staff were great. Snacks and drinks available all day. Got to see a massive pod of dolphins then followed a family of orcas all day. It was amazing, you can see them clearly.

Full day Killer Whale Expeditions depart daily from December to April to the Bremer Canyon. Tours depart from Bremer Bay Boat Harbour just 5 hours south of Perth, Western Australia or 2 hours from Albany.

Where can I see Killer Whales in Australia?

Our Orca tours (also known as Killer Whales) are conducted on a large comfortable vessel in the summer months here from Bremer Bay, South Western Australia at a location known as the Bremer Bay Canyon (located in the Southern Ocean about 50 km or 25 nautical miles southeast of Bremer Bay).

Guests often ask “How deep is the Bremer Canyon?“ and are surprised to learn the trench can be as deep as 5000 meters in some places!

Orcas are actually dolphins not whales (the world’s largest species of dolphin) and can live for 50-80 years. Males can grow up to 10m long. These intelligent marine mammals form lifelong bonds in family groups that are led by a matriarch and hunt together in highly efficient groups.

Join us on an educational eco-tour in the Southern Ocean to see these amazing animals in their natural environment.

How far away is Bremer Bay from Perth?

Orca tours Bremer Bay are just a short trip south from Perth, Western Australia. Enjoy a day of sightseeing and take a five hour drive south from Perth, or fly to Albany and drive just 2 hours to arrive in the peaceful town of Bremer Bay. This is the only place in Australia where there are reliable sightings of Orcas.

Are there any age restrictions for whale watching tours?

Our Whale Watching tours departing from Augusta & Dunsborough are family friendly and open to all ages. There is however a minimum age of 10 on board our Bremer Bay Killer Whale Tours.

How close can we get to the whales?

Regulations and respect for wildlife dictate that vessels should maintain a specific distance from whales to avoid disturbing them. The exact distance can vary by location and regulatory bodies. Rest assured that your Naturaliste Charters crew are always up to date with the latest regulations and recommendations to make sure we leave as little environmental footprint as possible.

What happens if we don't see any whales?

You can confidently book a whale watching tour in Western Australia with us, thanks to our Whale Watching Guarantee. While we have a strong 99% whale sighting success rate, in the unlikely event that we don’t spot any whales, we invite you to come on another tour with us for free. To learn more, please read our No Whale Sighting Policy .

What should I bring on a whale watching tour?

Dress in layers as it can be colder at sea than on land. We recommend you bring sun protection (sunglasses, hat, sunscreen), a camera, binoculars for better viewing, and a reusable water bottle and keep cup.

What happens if I don’t see any whales?

With a 99% success rate, it would be very unlikely not to see any whales. But in case you don’t see any, we invite you to come on another tour with us for free. To learn more please read our No Whale Sighting Policy .

Can I go whale watching if I get seasick?

Yes, if you take precautions you can still enjoy whale watching if you suffer from seasickness. If you’re prone to seasickness, it may be helpful to take anti-seasickness medication before your trip, following the instructions on the packaging. Additionally, staying outside in the fresh air, keeping your eyes on the horizon and towards land, and avoiding heavy meals before the tour can also help.

How long does a whale watching tour last?

The length of our whale watching tours varies. Most tours last approximately 2-3 hours, with the exception of our Bremer Canyon Killer Whale Expedition which lasts for 8 hours.

Full Day Expedition

One of the world’s greatest full-day oceanic expeditions departs from the beautiful town of Bremer Bay, a two-hour drive from Albany or five-hour drive from Perth. From Albany, Naturaliste Charters offers transport to and from Bremer Bay with Busy Blue Bus.

After arriving at 7.45am at the Bremer Bay Boat Harbour, guests will board the Naturaliste Charter’s long-range expedition vessel purpose-built for the Southern Ocean, ready for an 8:30am departure. From Bremer Bay, the landscape of scenic bays and cliffs along with sparkling turquoise waters will shortly give way to the deep blue expanses of the Southern Ocean.  On departure, guests should keep an eye out for dolphins, Australian Sea-lions and numerous seabirds.

The expert crew will commence an exciting and informative multimedia presentation, delving into the Killer Whale’s biology and ecology, as well as information about the other marine life the expedition is likely to encounter. After a journey of approximately 1.5 hours, the vessel will arrive to the Bremer Canyon area, one of the most amazing marine environments on earth, where guests will commence the search for the apex predator in the ocean, the Killer Whale.

Paul Cross - Naturaliste Charters - Guide Profile - Australian Wildlife Journeys

Paul Cross - Skipper & Founder

It is common for pods of Killers Whales to approach and surround the vessel and expeditions often witness these magnificent creatures hunting. The spectacle of these predators chasing and devouring their prey is breath-taking, with seabirds such as albatross and shearwaters only too happy to pick up the scraps. On-board an expert marine biologist will share information about the pods social behaviours, along with other facts about the local marine ecology.

The day of unforgettable encounters is fully catered, with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea provided, and unlimited hot and cold beverages are available.  The vessel returns approximately 4.30pm, with guests sure to be left awed by our amazing blue planet.

Acoustic Monitoring

In addition to witnessing these incredible marine mammals, guests may also be able to hear them if conditions permit. Killer Whales live in family pods that have their own unique dialect or range of sounds. In other parts of the world, researchers use these vocalisations to identify family pods

Although the region has not been studied in details, researchers are already discovering information and movement patterns of pods in the region, providing a platform for future management and conservation.

Photo Identification

Naturaliste Charters also invites guests to participate in contributing photo ID shots of the animals encountered, to contribute to the growing database of individuals. As a citizen scientist, your ID shots also make a valuable contribution to this important research, conducted by Project Orca.

Individual Killer Whales have variations in the shape of the dorsal fin (with notable variations such as nicks and notches), the white eye patch’s shape and size, and the grey marking on the back (also known as the saddle patch).

How you'll be making a positive impact

E-WEB-Goal-14

As a globally-recognised innovator in the industry, Naturaliste Charters supports numerous projects, collaborations and also facilitates independent research onboard throughout the year. The team has been collaborating with Geographe Marine Research (GMR) for over a decade and among other projects, submit images daily, especially of endangered Blue Whales and Southern Right Whales.

The team also supports guests to get involved with Citizen Science via eBird Australia, iNaturalist and the HappyWhale platform.

With a variety of seasons comes different data collection opportunities. Dunsborough and Augusta have longer term data that is very specific, versus the relatively new Bremer Bay Killer Whale Expedition (that Naturaliste Charters founded) where scientists are only just beginning the research journey to understand this incredible ecosystem.

E-WEB-Goal-04

Orcas were first ‘discovered’ off Bremer Bay in the early 2000s by Dave Riggs, when he was on an annual tuna research expedition from Esperance to Albany. In 2013 he produced a film called The Search for the Ocean’s Super Predator, and not too long after that, Naturaliste Charters led by owner Paul Cross, worked alongside Dave to run the first dedicated expedition to see Orcas in Australian waters.

Naturaliste Charters is a national leader in supporting projects, collaborations and facilitating research onboard, regularly hosting active researchers and partnering with institutions and organisations to publish papers. A comprehensive list of articles has been made possible due to these contributions, ranging from the effect of El Niño Southern Oscillations on apex predators, tracking rare pelagic bird species for the BirdLife Australia Rarities Committee, to documenting the incredible Orca predation events witnessed off Bremer Bay, including Blue Whales.

E-WEB-Goal-12

On board the Alison-Maree vessel, guests will not find any single use plastics. In 2018, Naturaliste Charters committed to being plastic free, replacing disposable coffee cups and lids with bio-cups which are compostable and manufactured sustainably, and replacing plastic bottles with a hydration system to serve fresh, filtered and chilled water. Any cans that the organisation sells or other recyclable items are dropped to Containers for Change, who cash in 10 cents per item, which is donated directly to local environmental organisations and charities.

E-WEB-Goal-17

Naturaliste Charters is a national leader in supporting projects, collaborations and facilitating research onboard, regularly hosting active researchers and partnering with institutions and organisations to publish papers.

  • Murdoch University
  • International scientist Jochen Zaeschmar
  • International scientist Marianne Nyegaard
  • Birdlife Australia Rarities Committee (BARC)

Tragically their name was coined because they were very inquisitive and occupied waters close to the beach to give birth to their young so they were the right whale to hunt in the southern ocean and a favourite amongst whalers.

Frequently Asked Questions

You are guaranteed to see the whale of your tour or you are welcome to travel again free of charge. Our guarantee is in place as we have a very accurate sighting record, however we are interacting with wild whales and should the unlikely event of a no sighting day occur you have peace of mind in knowing you will be able to join us again at no charge to sight the whale of your tour.

Whale Watch Western Australia is the only company in Australia who operate whale watch experiences all year. Depending on when you would like to go whale watching or what species you would like to see relates to our available experiences throughout the year that follow the different whale migrations and seasons.

January to April Bremer Canyon Orca Experience

Sighting – Orca, Sperm Whale, Pilot Whale, Oceanic Dolphin species, Sunfish, NZ Fur Seals, Australian Sea Lions and migratory seabirds.

April to May Perth Canyon Blue Whale Experience

Sighting – Blue Whales, Oceanic Dolphin species, Sunfish and migratory seabirds

May to August Augusta Whale Watch Experience

Sighting – Humpback Whales, Southern Right Whales, Dolphins and migratory seabirds

September to December Perth Whale Watch Experience

Sighting – Humpback Whales, Dolphins and occasional sightings of Southern Right Whales and Blue Whales

All of our experiences are family friendly and it is largely dependant on your Childs experience onboard vessels and type of experience you would like to join. We have onboard toy boxes, colour in pages and blankets for the enjoyment and comfort of Children onboard.

HUMPBACK WHALE EXPERIENCES Our Humpback season operates over six months and is a perfect experience for all age groups including infants. The tours are approximately two hours in duration and this shorter time frame is ideal for guests who have not travelled on a boat before or have a busy travel itinerary.

ALL DAY EXPERIENCES Our Orca and Blue Whale Experiences are suitable for Children over ten years of age and with previous ocean travel experience. These all day tours are a wonderful opportunity for older Children to sight some of the most elusive whale species in the world. We must be mindful that it is a long day at sea for Children and their suitability to join the tour is dependant on their age, experience and each individual.

A jacket is recommended even on warm days as the sea breeze can be cool, sunglasses, hat, camera and motion sickness medication if required.

Our vessel is the largest and most luxurious whale watch vessel in Western Australia and has many covered areas so rain does not affect your tour. We do recommend bringing a rain jacket or poncho should showers be forecast so you can still enjoy the outside areas without getting wet.

Every tour is different and the amount of whales we can sight on one day or tour is dependant on what whales are around at the time. On average five whales are sighted on each tour and on some occasions we may only sight one whale or break a record for the amount of whales sighted in one day.

Everyone is an individual and we do recommend speaking with your doctor or local chemist if you believe you may be susceptible to motion sickness. Please prepare with motion sickness medication as recommend by your health care professional and this has been proven to lessen the likely hood of becoming unwell. We recommend that preparation is always the best option for guests.

There is no specific time of day or weather that is best for whale watching. The most important factor is how many whales are within the area you will be visiting which is why there are specific seasons in place to ensure the best opportunity for sighting whales.

Yes, tours are perfectly safe for pregnant women but we do recommend consulting with your doctor should you suffer from morning sickness or are susceptible to motion sickness.

You will Learn the Language of the Whales with Whale Watch Western Australia. We specialise in teaching our guests all about the language of the different species of whales that we interact with over our different seasons. Our live and educational commentary is run throughout your experience so you understand with in-depth information and stories the life of the amazing whales of Western Australia. Our wish is for you to depart being able to speak fluent whale and share your newfound knowledge with family and friends which will ensure that the education of whales is continued. Your time onboard is more than an experience, it is an education!

ORCA WHALE WATCHING TOUR REVIEWS

Experience of a Life Time

"Absolutely brilliant! The crew were awesome. Pia, the Marine Biologist was extremely knowledgeable and the killer whales put on an amazing show for us. I definitely recommend experiencing the orcas with Naturaliste Charters."

A sensational experience!!!

"My partner and I have been wanting to go on this tour for 4 years after watching a documentary. We finally went on the tour with Captain Dundee and the crew on Friday 28 Feb. The experience was sensational.. Seeing the Orca’s was such an overwhelming feeling, it was amazing. Massive hats off to crew for being so passionate, excited and enthusiastic about these animals.

The orcas were so social and it was almost as if they were leading us around and hanging out with us as much as we wanted to follow them and hang out with them. This is truly an experience you want to do and it’s worth every dollar.

We will 100% going back on this tour in the future. We came from Melbourne just for this and it was really something special."

See Killer Whales – Orcas – in the Wild

Seeing a killer whale, also commonly known as an orca, is a privilege very few have had the chance to witness. about 50 kilometres off the coast of the small holiday and fishing town of  bremer bay  is a deep canyon, less than half a square kilometre in size. this recent discovery is home to the largest pod of killer whales in the southern hemisphere, with up to 100 killer whales spotted in the area at one time. you can witness this unique phenomenon by joining a daily research expedition that departs from bremer bay from late january to april each year..

Scientists believe that during a six-week period in summer a cold, salty current flows through the Bremer Canyon and creates an upwelling nutrient-filled water that attracts a plethora of marine life. In addition to killer whales, other apex predators surround the site including sharks, giant squid, dolphins and sperm whales.

Killer whales are present at the site or nearby more than 96 per cent of the time, making it a highly reliable expedition and one of the largest congregations of killer whales in the Southern Hemisphere.

Orca expeditions

More than a whale watching tour, the Orca Expeditions are a part of a research program. By joining, you not only help to support the program but you also become a part of an important project by assisting to spot Killer Whales. During the 1.5 hour journey to the site, you can also expect to see a wide variety of marine species including seabirds, dolphins, sharks, tuna and seals.

Bookings can be made direct with local tour operators  Naturaliste Charters  or  Whale Watch Western Australia , or through surrounding visitor centres, such as  Albany  and  Bremer Bay . Daily transfers from Albany are also available as a day trip with  Busy Blue Bus , or you can extend your stay to include a Bremer Bay sights tour the following day.

What to expect

The trip out to the Bremer Canyon from the Bremer Bay Boat Harbour takes 1.5hrs (3hrs return). The full day tour (roughly 8hrs total) is majorly spent out in the canyon on the open Southern Ocean, so if you’re prone to sea sickness we recommend you exercise caution.

The orca are a predatory species, so it is likely you will witness them as they hunt, kill and eat their prey. There are also many other marine life in this isolated environment – a tour is an opportunity to see dolphins, sperm whales, long-finned pilot whales, and the rarer beaked or blue whales, as well as bird species such as the Shearwater and Petrel.

With over 1200 kilometres of coastlines in the South West, there’s plenty of possibilities for interacting with all sorts of other marine life. Catch humpback, southern right and blue whales along the coast, as well as dolphins, orcas, rays, seals and other ocean-dwelling animals. Plan your next aquatic adventure in Australia’s South West.

SEA The Gold Coast

Orcas: Where can you spot killer whales in Australia?

Orcas: Where can you spot killer whales in Australia?

Orcas – informally referred to as killer whales because of their fearsome reputation – are majestic mammals found in Australian waters between the months of June and October on the east coast, and January to April on the west.

Weighing up to six tonnes, the orca is, in fact, the largest species of dolphin rather than a whale as its nickname suggests. Bearing flesh-eating teeth of up to 10 centimetres long, the mammals are rightly feared in the ocean. https://www.livescience.com/27431-orcas-killer-whales.html

Traditionally found in colder waters of the Antarctic, much more research about the habits of orcas in Australia is needed. Here are some confirmed sightings:

Byron Bay – Northern New South Wales

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-11-01/orca-sightings-off-nsw-coast-sparks-call-for-marine-research/9107020

In 2017, the distinctive black and white markings of a pod of orcas were spotted off the coast of Byron Bay – the most Easterly point of the Australian mainland – migrating from their home in the Antarctic to the warmer waters of Queensland.

Orcas naturally hunt humpback whales, and evidence of an attack washed up on the Byron shores just days after the sightings.

Bremer Bay – Western Australia

At the top of the food chain, orcas are commonly spotted in the seas of Western Australia between January to April each year.

Five hours south-east of Perth, The Bremer Bay Canyon is a hive of killer whale activity, and orca-watching tours headed for 70 kilometres off the coast offer a 90% sighting rate.

https://environment.des.qld.gov.au/wildlife/watching/marine-mammals/species.html#orcas_killer_whales

Humpback whales migrate from the Antarctic to the warmer waters of Queensland to give birth throughout the winter months. As predators of humpbacks, orcas are prone to following the whales to hunt their pray. With safety in numbers, pods of up to 50 humpbacks can defend each other against an orca attack.

Confirmed sightings of orcas include Fraser Island and the Sunshine Coast https://www.qt.com.au/news/yachties-killer-whale-escort-to-mooloolaba/3106795/ . Knowing orcas are attracted to humpback whales; you may even be lucky enough to view killer whales on a whale-watching tour leaving from the Gold Coast.

As natural predators of the sea, killer whales are not suited to captive environments. While Sea World on the Gold Coast is a great place to see marine animals in their natural habitat, killer whales never have and won’t ever be housed in Sea World captivity.

Research into killer whales

While killer whales don’t treat humans as prey, they are top of the food chain in the water, and there’s still plenty of research required to find out more about their habitat and actions.

We know that killer whales hunt in pods of up to 40, and by studying their prey – humpback whales – we can learn a lot more about the diet, lifestyle and habits of the most feared sea mammal which goes towards the protection of the king of the sea long into the future.

Killer Whale

killer whale tour australia

Killer Whales are distinctively marked, with a black back, white chest and sides, and a white patch above and behind the eye. Calves are born with a yellowish or orange tint, which fades to white. Killer Whales have a heavy and stocky body and a large dorsal fin with a dark grey "saddle patch" at the fin's rear. Males can be up to 9.5 m long (31 ft) and weigh in excess of 6 tonnes; it has been reported that especially large males have reached nearer 8 tonnes. Females are smaller, reaching up to 8.5 m (28 ft) and a weight of about 5 tonnes. The longest Killer Whale ever recorded was a male from Washington state, measuring 9.8 m (32 ft). Calves at birth weigh about 180 kg and are about 2.4 m long (8 ft). The Killer Whale's large size and strength make them the fastest marine mammals, often reaching speeds in excess of 56 km/h (35mph).

Why you should visit Victoria, Vancouver's little sister with a big history

British Columbia’s capital has grand architecture, First Nations art and Canada’s oldest Chinatown, all fringed by easily accessible wilderness.

A picture of the central area of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. The architecture is traditional, and in the foreground sailboats dock in calm waters.

On the southern tip of Vancouver Island, sailboats bob in Victoria’s harbour and chateau-style buildings stand beside leafy parks. The gentle pace of life in British Columbia’s compact capital is part of its appeal, yet it’s far from a provincial backwater. An easy journey from Vancouver, the city has excellent neighbourhood restaurants, breweries and coffee shops, while its museums and galleries showcase the region’s Indigenous heritage. It’s also surrounded by wild landscapes and makes a natural jumping-off point for whale-watching.

Presiding over the harbour, the British Columbia Parliament Buildings are the city’s centrepiece, an 1890s icon whose marbled interiors are open for free daytime tours. Across the street, the Fairmont Empress is one of Canada’s grandest hotels, with Elizabeth II and Rudyard Kipling among its storied guests. Afternoon tea in the opulent Lobby Lounge is one of Victoria’s quintessential experiences.

Through first-class exhibits, the Royal BC Museum delves deep into the province’s natural past (look out for the life-sized woolly mammoth), as well as its rich First Nations heritage. There are more than 225,000 artefacts in its collection, from masks belonging to the Haida people to traditional clothing from the Nlaka’pamux. Adjoining the museum is Thunderbird Park, named after the legendary bird and home to some of the museum’s most spectacular totem poles.

There’s much to discover in lively Downtown. Bibliophiles will love browsing the shelves at Munro’s Books , a shop housed in a former bank, with its coffered ceiling and spectacular painted textiles by local artist Carole Sabiston. The Mark Loria Gallery , meanwhile, specialises in contemporary Canadian Indigenous art.

Victoria’s Chinatown   is the oldest in Canada, home to retro neon signs and restaurants such as Don Mee , which has served dim sum for more than 80 years. Fan Tan Alley claims to be one of the world’s narrowest streets; squeeze along the lantern-festooned lane for a range of quirky boutiques, from Saltspring Soapworks , which sells natural body-care products, to Just Matcha , which stocks premium-grade tea. Close by is Habit Coffee , a laid-back cafe with local art on its exposed-brick walls and Victorian suppliers on its menu — stop by to pick up beans from Bows Coffee Roasters or teas from Earth’s Herbal, both based in the city.

There’s more BC produce on offer at Wind Cries Mary , a moodily lit Downtown spot where the province’s oysters, mussels and salmon prop up a menu of sharing plates and cocktails. On the harbourfront, Red Fish Blue Fish is the place to go for jerk fish poutine, a fiery take on the Canadian classic.

If brunch is on the cards, try John’s Place , a kitsch, old-school spot serving waffles, pancakes and ‘Bat Out Of Hell meatloaf and eggs’, or head for the bubblegum-pink Floyd’s Diner in James Bay, where asking for ‘The Mahoney’ will get you whatever takes the chef’s fancy. For a tipple, Downtown’s Citrus & Cane mixes killer cocktails with a tropical twist (try the ‘ooh dat’s spicy’, made with Sons of Vancouver chilli vodka), while Boomtown serves a raft of BC porters and pale ales in its beer garden.

But there’s no resisting the call of the wild, with the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, Goldstream Provincial Park and The Butchart Gardens within easy reach of the city. Dallas Road is also worth a drive or cycle — start in Fisherman’s Wharf Park, near the harbour, and wind east for six miles past beaches, bays and Beacon Hill Park, home to the world’s tallest freestanding totem pole at 128ft, before calling at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel . It makes an elegant stop for a glass of wine from BC’s Okanagan Valley, with views across to the Chatham Islands. For whale-watching, try Eagle Wing Tours; between June and October is the best time to spot Victoria’s marine residents.

Three wildlife spotting adventures in Victoria

1. Juan de Fuca marine Trail Keep eyes peeled for black bears on this 29-mile route through dense forests, over river gorges and along secluded beaches. It takes three to five days to complete, and there are chances to refuel at rustic diners along the way.

2.   Goldstream Provincial Park A naturalist’s paradise, this park has quiet forest walking trails, plunging waterfalls and a challenging climb to the top of the 1,375ft-tall Mount Finlayson, with bald eagles screeching overhead. Autumn sees the spectacular salmon run, too.

3.   Eagle Wing Tours This family-run company offers whale-watching trips in the Salish Sea with a team of guides. Seeing a pod of orcas or a humpback is a true highlight of a trip to Victoria, but ospreys, sea otters and elephant seals can also be spotted among the craggy islets on these three- to four-hour trips.

Nearly 80 Killer Whales Hunt Down Blue Whale In Wild Video

killer whale tour australia

Can you imagine seeing something like that?

Killer whales are nothing short of amazing. These creatures are massive reaching over 32 feet and weighting as much as 22,000 pounds. These massive apex predators eat everything they can from fish to sea lions and sharks. Beyond that, they are even known to live in groups called pods where they team up and hunt together to ensure they all get a meal… the wolves of the sea.

Alone they are amazing and dangerous, together they can do anything thy want as they use different techniques to get their meals.

These folks caught something amazing in action as a group of nearly 80 killer whales hunts down a small blue whale. Saying a small blue whale doesn’t mean much, because even they are big. Blue whales can reach up to 200 tons and stretch over 100 feet long.

This video shows killer whales everywhere you look as they attack the blue whale near Bremer Canyon, off the coast of Australia.

The folks summed it all up like this.

“Yesterday was a wildlife experience as raw as it gets, as close to 80 killer whales came together to successfully hunt and kill a young blue whale. For close to three hours the blue whale tried to evade the orca, but in the end strength in numbers prevailed.

It was both harrowing and yet stunning to see a natural spectacle that only a few people have ever witnessed.”

That sounds about right. That is some of natures finest at work.

'Inhumane and disappointing' Iceland issues licence for 128 fin whales to be hunted and killed

A fin whale in the sea.

Iceland's government has issued a licence to the North Atlantic nation's last fin whaling company to hunt and kill 128 fin whales this year.

Animal rights groups say that while the number is significantly lower than in previous years, the decision to allow the practice to continue is inhumane and disappointing.

Commercial whaling company Hvalur hf. has been given a licence to hunt 128 fin whales in Icelandic waters.

It will be permitted to hunt 99 fin whales in the Greenland and West Iceland region and another 29 in the East Iceland and Faroe Islands region this year, the fisheries ministry said in a statement.

This will be valid during the 2024 season, which typically runs from June to August.

A dead fin whale being hosed down.

The quota was half that of 2023, when the Icelandic government allowed for the hunting of 264 fin whales, according to the nonprofit organisation International Fund for Animal Welfare.

"Today's announcement represents a significant reduction in the quota and the duration of the hunt," said Patrick Ramage, the group's director.

But he added that it was "absolutely ridiculous that hunting at any level should be allowed to continue".

"It's bad news for Iceland and bad news for marine conservation," he said.

Iceland's government temporarily suspended the commercial hunting of fin whales last year on animal welfare grounds.

The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority estimated in a May 2023 report that 67 per cent of the 58 whales caught by boats it monitored died or lost consciousness quickly or immediately.

It said 14 whales were shot more than once, and two were shot four times before they died.

Officials said later that whaling can resume with stricter requirements on hunting methods and increased supervision.

Fin whales are the world's largest whale species other than blue whales, according to the International Whaling Commission.

The International Whaling Commission imposed a ban on commercial whaling in the 1980s due to dwindling stocks.

Iceland, which left the IWC in 1992, returned in 2002 with a reservation to the ban and allowed commercial whaling to resume in 2006.

Along with Norway and Japan, Iceland is one of the only countries still practising commercial whaling.

The country has annual quotas for the fin whales and minke whales fishermen are allowed to hunt in its waters.

It exports most of its whale meat to Japan, but demand there has dwindled since Japan left the IWC in 2019.

Last month Japan's government proposed adding fin whales to an allowable catch list, which included three other whale species.
