When can I check in to get my rider kit? What is the latest I can get there on ride day?

Check-in is available on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday, June 22 :  12:00PM – 4:00PM Location:  TBD

FOR ALL RIDER KIT PICKUP:

Bring your confirmation or final details email with QR code and your government-issued photo ID to receive your riding materials. Rider kits will not be provided to riders who are not present in person.

If you are checking in on the morning of the ride , we recommend you allow yourself at least 30 minutes prior to your preferred route’s start window to ensure you have ample opportunity to get through the check-in line, receive your cue sheet, use the restroom, and grab a complimentary breakfast. You should also account for travel time, parking, and potential lines when planning your trip.

Breakfast starts at 7:00AM on ride day.

Cue sheets will be distributed 10 minutes before the beginning of each start window. Starts are staggered to keep the ride flowing smoothly by spreading out cyclists along the route and minimizing our impact on local roads and communities.

What do I need to bring with me?

  • A   helmet : You gotta wear it. No ifs, ands, or buts.
  • A bell : New York State law requires that all cyclists have and use a bike bell.
  • Water bottle(s) : You’ll be able to fill your water bottle at the Start Area and every rest area.
  • Photo ID : so you can check in and get your cue sheet.
  • Cash/credit card: Cash payment is required for beverages at the beer garden, but you may use your card to grab some lunch at area restaurants, and use cash or your card to stock up on cool Bike New York gear!
  • A spare tube and patch kit : Bike repair along the routes is free, but there’s a charge for parts.
  • Sunscreen : Apply liberally and repeat.
  • Clothing : Wear jerseys, shorts, and arm skins with built-in sun protection, and a cap under your helmet to shield your head.
  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate : Check your water levels often and be sure to always have a full bottle on hand. Increase consumption of watery fruits and veggies in the days leading up to the ride. Sodium helps you hold onto fluids you’re drinking, so sip an electrolyte beverage during your ride. Drink little amounts often. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty; keep sipping from beginning to end. We provide snacks and hydration at all rest stops but, if you have dietary restrictions, please bring snacks that you can use to fuel your ride.
  • Travel light : There is no bag check, so bring only what you can carry with you on the ride.

Is the route closed to cars? Does the ride take place entirely on paved streets?

The route is open to traffic. Please visit New York State’s website for more information on the rules of the road .

The ride takes place almost entirely on paved streets, as well as the Walkway Over The Hudson and short segments of the Dutchess Rail Trail and the Hudson Valley Rail Trail.

There are no dirt paths on the route, though there may be gravel surfaces at certain rest stops.

What is the elevation for each route?

15 mile – 895 feet

33 mile – 1,754 feet

55 mile – 2,925 feet

75 mile – 4,196 feet

100 mile – 5,822 feet

*All elevation gains are approximate.

Can I switch routes after I've started?

Yes. There will be points on each route at which you’ll have to decide whether to continue on your chosen route or switch to a different route. These splits are indicated on your cue sheet and will be marked with signs. Follow the signs for your chosen route.

Will the ride be canceled if it rains?

All Bike New York rides are rain or shine. In the event of severe or potentially dangerous weather, we’ll be in touch regarding contingency plans.

What's included in my registration fee?

Your registration fee covers:

  • Entry to the ride
  • Breakfast at the start
  • Cue sheet (printed turn-by-turn directions)
  • GPS files for download
  • Access to services and amenities along the route (rest areas and SAG support)
  • Commemorative T-shirt
  • Finisher medal

I need to cancel my entry; what are my options?

Entries are non-refundable and non-deferrable, but you may transfer your entry to another person. Here’s how:

  • Log into  your EnMotive account .
  • On your account page, click on  Registrations on the left side and find your 2024 DISCOVER HUDSON VALLEY RIDE registration.
  • Click on the three dots.
  • Select  Transfer Registration .
  • Please enter the Enmotive account email address of the person to whom you would like to transfer your registration.
  • Click on  Transfer Registration ; this will send an email to that person notifying them of the transfer, with instructions on how to accept the transfer.
  • There is a $10 transfer fee to be paid by the transferee.
  • The transfer will only be valid for 48 hours , so be sure they accept quickly!

If you prefer to donate your registration fees to Bike New York (with our deep gratitide for your support), please email [email protected] to request that your registration fee be converted into a tax-deductible charitable donation.

If you purchased the EnMotive Protection Plan during registration and need to cancel your entry , please email [email protected] for assistance.

Are there age restrictions? Do I have to register my child?

Youth ages 3-17 are welcome to participate (provided they are registered) and ride with a parent or guardian, adhering to these guidelines:

  • Ages 3-9 must ride with an adult on a tandem bike, in a child’s seat on a tagalong bike, or in a bike trailer.
  • Ages 10-17 may ride their own bikes, but must remain in close proximity to the adult with whom they were registered.
  • Children under 3 are not allowed to participate in Bike New York events.

All participants, including children in child seats, on tagalongs, or in bike trailers, must be registered. Youth entries are available at a lower price.

How long will it take me to finish the ride?

That’s up to you! You can ride at your own pace and stop at rest areas for as long as you like, provided you remain in front of the SAG vehicles trailing the back of the pack. The Finish Festival closes at 5:00PM, so be mindful of your pace and ride accordingly.

Can I get the cue sheet ahead of time? Will GPS files be provided?

Cue sheets will be given out on the morning of the ride, 10 minutes before the beginning of the start time for each route. This allows us to ensure that people start the ride when rest areas are open and SAG vehicles are in position.

We will include GPS files in our final details email three days before the ride.

Will my ride be timed?

No, but you may use the timing feature in your GPS app to track your time.

Can I check my bag at the start? Are there any bag restrictions?

We don’t provide bag check for the ride; you must take your bag with you.

For our regional rides, there are no bag restrictions. Just make sure you can carry what you bring with you.

Does the beer garden accept credit cards?

No. Only cash will be accepted at the beer garden for purchasing beer and hard seltzer from our friends at New Belgium.

Where do proceeds from the ride go?

Bike New York is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and all proceeds from our events fund our free bike education, community outreach, and advocacy programs. In 2021 alone, we taught bike riding and bike safety skills to more than 30,000 kids and adults throughout New York City.

Registration Open for Cycle the Hudson Valley 2023

Parks & Trails NY

Participants experience one of the most significant, newest and exciting trails in America this summer

Albany, NY – Registration is now open for Parks & Trails New York’s inaugural Cycle the Hudson Valley tour, which promises to be an unforgettable opportunity to take in the rich history of the valley that helped shape America. The seven-day, 200-mile recreational bicycle tour from the Capital of New York State to the Big Apple is scheduled for July 29 - August 5,  2023.

Cycle the Hudson Valley participants will experience one of the best trails in America as they cycle through historic  villages and discover the small-town charm of Upstate New York on their way to one of the most famous cities in the world.   Along the way, historians and local experts will introduce riders to the people, places, and things that make the Hudson Valley so important to the history of New York and the nation. Cyclists will pedal 30-50 miles per day  with additional mileage options for riders wanting to explore more of the Hudson Valley.  The route includes a lay-over day in Kingston, which was the first Capital of New York, a ride across the Rosendale Trestle and the Walkway Over the Hudson.

The tour features 200 miles of off-road trails and connecting roads following the north-south leg of New York State’s 750-mile Empire State Trail, which is the longest multi-use trail in the nation.  This section of the trail is 63% paved and 13% crushed stone dust trail, with 24% on road.

Cycle the Hudson Valley features daily route support, including  one to two rest stops per day with fruit, snacks and drinks, seven overnight camping sites with hot showers, seven breakfasts, four dinners, three dinners “on your own” with shuttles to area restaurants (including the renowned Culinary Institute of America).  Evening activities include music and speakers. Shuttles will bring cyclists to area attractions, such as Olana, FDR Library and museum, and Val-Kill State Historic Site. An optional shuttle is available at the end of the tour from NYC to the start location in Troy, N.Y.  The registration fee for the full tour is $975 for adults,  $535 for youths ages 6-17 and $674 for non-cycling participants.

Parks & Trails New York is the leading statewide advocate working to create a network of parks, trails, and greenways so that New Yorkers can enjoy the outdoors close to home. Cycle the Hudson Valley supports Parks & Trails New York’s work on the Empire State Trail and on trails in communities throughout New York State.

New York Empire State Trail Bike Tour

Ride the empire state trail.

Explore the Hudson Valley on this Empire State Trail bike tour! This trail, completed in 2020, allows cyclists to experience the Empire State’s urban centers, village main streets, rural communities and diverse history. Over six days, we’ll travel along the Hudson River Valley from downtown New York City to Albany, New York.

The trail is mostly on paved and crushed-stone rail trails, but it does include some riding adjacent to motor vehicle traffic. Request a  Tour Itinerary  for more detailed information and logistics.

Tour Highlights

Cycling through Manhattan

9/11 Memorial Visit

Scenic road and trail riding

The beautiful Hudson River Valley

Transportation back to starting point

Lodging Options

Courtyard by Marriott

Hotel Le Chambord at Curry Estate

Hotel Kinsley

The Wick Hotel

This morning our cycling adventure starts with a 30-minute ferry ride from Staten Island to Battery Park in Manhattan. You’ll pass the Statue of Liberty and get a great view of the Manhattan skyline! See the Statue of Liberty, take some time to reflect at the 9/11 Memorial, get a classic NYC bagel lunch, and ride all the way to Tarrytown. Please note: Cycling through New York City is an amazing experience, but it is a busy place! Riders must be experienced riding both with traffic and on busy bike paths.

Travel northeast along the former Putnam rail line north into Westchester, where the route then follows the South County Trail. Despite passing through densely populated areas, the rail-trail is surprisingly park-like and quiet, buffered from adjacent development and the Saw Mill River Parkway by dense woods. End in historic Hopewell Junction at Le Chambord at Curry Estate.

Start riding today on the Dutchess Rail Trail, passing through wooded areas, local parks, and residential communities. The highlight today is in Poughkeepsie at the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge, Walkway Over the Hudson State Park. The Walkway is a spectacular 1.5-mile park built on an historic railroad bridge over 200 feet above the Hudson River. Ride this to the Hudson Valley Trail, which extends almost all the way to Kingston. Here we’ll stay at Hotel Kinsley, a chic, restored bank building from the 1860s.

Continuing north, ride scenic roads from Kingston to Hudson, where you’ll have lots of time to explore the town. With its galleries, coffeehouses, and open-kitchen restaurants attracting hipsters, writers, artists, and movie stars, Hudson has been called the Un-Hamptons, New York’s Upstate Downtown, and Brooklyn North.

Today you’ll cruise along the Albany-Hudson Electric Trail. The 36-mile “AHET” runs from the City of Hudson to the City of Rensselaer, just outside of Albany. Much of this trail is off-road on crushed stone, and it runs northeast past woods, streams, wetlands, farm lands, and small hamlets. Then ride the Mohawk Hudson Bike Hike Trail to the capital city of Albany. After that, we will jump on the Erie Canal Trail for a while, and ride along the Hudson River all the way to Troy where we will stay for the evening.

The ride today starts in Troy and mostly follows the Mohawk River Bikeway, which is part of the Erie Canalway Trail. You’ll pass by scenic views of the Mohawk River, woodlands, wetlands, and residential areas. Make sure to take a quick stop at Cohoes Falls to see the impressive waterfall. The rest of the journey is mainly off-road until you reach Schenectady. In Schenectady, you’ll have a final lunch together before saying goodbye and shuttling back to Newark.

My husband, David, and I both had a wonderful time. Guides Paul and James took good care of us. Enjoyed getting to know them and our fellow travelers. Loved the food at the sags, especially the Oreo halves with strawberries. Actually, all the food and the accommodations were excellent, especially enjoyed the breakfast at the Carey Estate and Taco Diablo for lunch. We both found our rented bikes much to our liking and the Empire State Trail itself was impressive, very well maintained. Enjoyed the historic and the natural beauty as we pedaled. I Took a Bike Tour Through New York's Hudson Valley — Here's Where I Found 'Farm-to-glass' Whiskey and the Best Meals

On a cycling vacation through upstate New York and the Connecticut countryside, discover a whole new side of the Hudson Valley you think you know.

When I think "bike tours," I tend to imagine winding my way up Tuscan hills or pedaling through sunflower fields in Provence, sharing the roads with grizzled farmers in ancient Fiats and Citröens. But as the pandemic shifted the attention of many travelers to overlooked destinations in their own backyards, so too did it force tour operators to get creative. Last year, DuVine, an international cycling company, unveiled a tour of the Hudson Valley.

The prospect didn't exactly thrill me. As a longtime resident of New York City who has spent countless weekends pawing through antiques, raiding farm stands, and agonizing over that perpetual question — Could I live here? — I thought I'd essentially checked the Hudson Valley box. That said, I am an avid cyclist — and a veteran of many two-wheeled holidays — so any bike trip pretty much has me at "bike." Add some of upstate's finest farm-to-table food (and, as I would find out, "field-to-glass" whiskey), a home base at the cozy lodge Troutbeck ( troutbeck.com ; doubles from $445) , and the general fellowship of the people who typically choose to take bike tours, and, well, I could hardly say no.

On a simmering summer morning, I arrived solo to join a group of five couples assembled on the lawn at the culturally significant Troutbeck — over the last two centuries, guests have included Henry David Thoreau, Theodore Roosevelt, and Thurgood Marshall. The hotel occupies a 250-acre stretch in Amenia, New York, a hamlet near the border with Connecticut. My fellow cyclists had come farther than I had, hailing from Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, and even Mexico. One couple had e-bikes, the great equalizers — despite being in their 70s, they had no trouble matching the most energetic riders. We were led on the road by our guide, Ross Eustis, a New Yorker who'd gone to boarding school in the area; for him, passing a rival school where he'd played baseball was a literal trip down memory lane.

Just as the first motorists had the lobbying efforts of 19th-century cyclists to thank for the good roads they drove on, the contemporary cyclist can often give thanks to the railroad industry for creating some of the country's best biking infrastructure. The 26-mile Harlem Valley Rail Trail — which runs from Wassaic to Copake Falls and can be picked up near Troutbeck — featured often in our daily cycling plan. The trail provided a level, shaded, and traffic-free artery to places like Millerton, a tiny town that punches above its weight, with artisanal tea producer Harney & Sons ( harney.com ) ; the Edward Hopperesque Oakhurst Diner ( oakhurst-diner.com ; entrées $13–$25) ; coffee roaster Irving Farm ( irvingfarm.com ) , where we stopped to refuel; and Westerlind ( westerlindoutdoor.com ) , a sort of hipster Woolworths.

When not on the rail trail, we traversed green and rolling back roads, crisscrossing the state border, past fields of thigh-high corn, gushing waterfalls, and tidy Dutch-style houses. We took refuge from the heat at places like McEnroe Organic Farm ( mcenroeorganicfarm.com ) , which has its own market and dining operation, and quenched our collective thirst with tastings of Kings Highway Fine Cider ( cider.nyc ) , a zero-added-sugar drink produced by onetime journalist Tyler Graham, who started out making cider in his Brooklyn apartment.

One afternoon we were joined by chef Gabe McMackin, an enthusiastic cyclist and former Brooklynite who closed his Michelin-starred restaurant, the Finch, in 2020; now he helms the food and beverage program at Troutbeck. He pointed out secret swimming holes and favorite pizza spots — like the Lantern Inn ( wassaiclanterninn.com ; entrées $15–$20) , in Wassaic. When he suddenly realized his own dinner service was looming, I agreed to bike back with him. After riding at a blistering pace, I collapsed in a hammock. He headed straight to the kitchen. But our group's meal that night was actually at Serevan ( serevan.com ; entrées $32–$38) , a regional staple founded by chef Serge Madikians, a self-described "Armenian from Iran" whose exquisite menu includes saffron-infused spaetzle, rack of lamb with herbed labne , and eggplant stew. Madikians is also a pilot; he's been known to ferry fresh seafood from Cape Cod in time for dinner.

The next day, the remnants of Tropical Storm Elsa began to whip through the valley, and we rode past power crews repairing downed lines. After a lunch stop — we stayed mostly dry under the porch roof of a delicatessen — we climbed into the support van for the short drive to Hillrock Estate Distillery ( hillrockdistillery.com ) , which is housed in a home built by a Revolutionary War captain.

Hillrock was originally overseen by legendary distiller David Pickerell (he helped bring Maker's Mark to prominence) and still practices "floor malting" — laying out the barley in a Zen-garden-like spiral on a cold stone floor to let it germinate. My group retreated to a cozy room where five whiskeys were arrayed in front of each of us. After tasting fiery rye, smoky and sinuous single malt, and oaky-sweet bourbon, a few of us elected to return to Troutbeck by bike. There was a consistent drizzle, but we were warm, and there were still more country roads to be explored.

A version of this story first appeared in the June 2022 issue of Travel + Leisure under the headline Back in the Saddle.

We can also arrange certain meals during your ride as well.  And if your bike breaks down or you need help, we are always close by with our support van.

Check out a suggested itinerary below. For information about how our private tours work and pricing, please see our private tours page.

Example 3-Day Itinerary

Choose routes ranging between 25 and 50 miles. mostly flat rail-trail. rolling hills in other spots..

A good launch point for the tour is the Wassaic train station which is located at the southern end of a beautiful bike path. It provides easy train access from NYC if you do not want to drive to the tour, or there is free weekend parking if you are driving. No matter how you arrive, you’ll have access to our support van to store everything you do not want to ride with, such as bags, equipment, etc. We will also provide you with snacks, energy bars and beverages to get you on your way.

Start your ride on a car-free rail-trail that takes you through the fertile farms and historic towns of the Harlem Valley, one of the smaller valleys that feeds into the Hudson River. Depending on the length of the ride you choose and where you would like to stay, you will need to ride on quiet rural roads in addition to this trail. No matter the exact route, you will ride though many beautiful landscapes.  There are also opportunities to stop at a number of historic sites, farmstands and swimming holes. You can also do a short hike to a fantastic waterfall.

Choose routes ranging between 35 and 60 miles. Rolling hills, mostly downward.

While Day 1, explored a smaller tributary valley of the Hudson River, Day 2 takes you over the ridge to the main part of the Hudson Valley where wide views of the river await you. The ride generally uses low-traffic back roads that try to avoid any steep hills. While the terrain is hillier on Day 2,  the good news is that you are generally moving from a higher to lower elevation.  So for every uphill climb you encounter, the downhill on the other side is much longer. So you’ll be spending more time riding down hills than up.

There are also many things to stop and enjoy on the day’s ride.   You can visit historic mansions that are perched high above the river, or go for a swim in a beautiful lake. Explore historic downtowns with shops and farm-to-table restaurants. Or stop at a winery.

Depending on the length of riding you want to do and the accommodations you are looking for, we recommend riders stay overnight in either Rosendale, Kingston or Red Hook. We can recommend the right place for you, based on your interests.

Choose routes ranging between 20 and 50 miles. Mostly flat rail-trail. Rolling hills in other spots.

For Day 3 you will be back on more rail trails as you explore another valley that is tributary to the Hudson River. In addition to a lot of relaxed, car-free riding, you will also get to experience breathtaking views from two different train trestles which have now been converted into bike trails. Both of these trestles offer excellent opportunities for pictures.

Day 3 also offers the most choices if you are interested in visiting any local wineries, distilleries or breweries. You can make up to 5 of these stops and it is also possible for us to arrange a picnic lunch for you in some of these beautiful settings. There are also a number of historic sites you can visit as well, including one of the first Huguenot settlements in the Hudson Valley.

A typical ending point for Day 3 is Poughkeepsie, a city that is right along the Hudson River that has many great restaurants, including the famous Culinary Institute of America . Your entry into Poughkeepsie could be the grand finale of your tour as you experience the fantastic “ Walkway over the Hudson ”.

If you took the train to the bike tour, it is very easy to catch a train back to NYC via the Poughkeepsie train station.  If you drove to the tour, we can shuttle you back to your car in Wassaic.

Hudson River from pedestrian and bike bridge

Trip Overview

The Hudson River Valley of New York was named as one of the top 20 must-see destinations in the world by National Geographic Traveler. The beautiful Hudson River wends its way past small riverside villages, exquisite horse farms, wineries, and apple orchards and then carves a path past spectacular mountains and deep ravines. These are the awe-inspiring views and the gorgeous quiet vistas that inspired artists of the Hudson River School a century ago and the rural paradise that encouraged the Gilded Age millionaires to lavish their fortunes on creating magnificent estates along the banks of the river. You ride peaceful roads and bike paths enjoying spectacular views, exploring woodlands and farms, and visiting the many small villages that make the area so special. We include visits to historic sites and several of the grandest mansions in the nation, including FDR’s longtime home at Hyde Park. You ride the Dutchess Rail Trail on a bridge high over the Hudson. Enjoy a wine tasting at a marvelous family owned vineyard and a visit to some of the oldest buildings in America that still line Huguenot Street in the college town of New Paltz. Gentle riding takes you through the farmland and horse country that becomes the foothills of the spectacular Shawangunk Mountains. And, as always, we offer the more energetic riders scenic and longer daily options. As an added bonus, you are treated to a delightful dinner at the famed Culinary Institute of America. You enjoy all this while staying at three wonderful inns. The first two nights we are guests at the luxurious Buttermilk Falls Inn and Spa, an elegant 75-acre 18th-century Estate located right on the Hudson. The third night at the historic 1850 House inn and tavern, and the last two nights are in the heart of Rhinebeck village in the Beekman Arms/Delamater Inn.

From start to finish, check out the route.

Welcome to Dutchess County

Take the train from New York City up to Wassaic or drive directly to Troutbeck, our home for the next three nights. The guest list of this historic country retreat reads like a roster of great American authors—including Twain, Thoreau, and Emerson—but feels appropriately modern, and succeeds at balancing a sense of place with all the creature comforts. We’ll get fitted to our bikes then head out for a first ride into the New York countryside. Ride the rail trail to Millerton, a sleepy little town experiencing a hip revival that’s earned it the nickname “Williamsburg on the Hudson.” Stop at a local organic farm stand for a casual lunch paired with a tasting of the best local ciders, then bike back to Troutbeck through pastures and farm fields. Tonight we kick things off with a welcome cocktail followed by a farm-to-table dinner.

Meals : Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Wassaic, Millerton Accomplished : 20 miles / 32 km, elevation gain: 883 feet / 269 meters Longer Option : 32 miles / 51 km, elevation gain: 1,983 feet / 605 meters Accommodations : Troutbeck

Connecticut, Covered Bridges, and Home Cooking

This morning we pedal out of Troutbeck, across the Appalachian Trail, and into Connecticut’s Housatonic River Valley. Follow the banks of the river to one of the state’s three remaining covered bridges, built in 1842. After, slip back across the New York border where a farm visit awaits us followed by lunch on the grounds. This afternoon we’ll ride through the fertile farmlands of the Tenmile River Valley, passing quaint towns like Dover Plains and Wassaic, home to a bustling art community. Back at Troutbeck, enjoy a cocktail by the pool with time to relax before dinner at our favorite local eatery.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Kent, Wingdale, Dover Plains Accomplished : 42 miles / 67 km, elevation gain: 2,250 feet / 686 meters Shorter Option : 22 miles / 35 km, elevation gain: 1,094 feet / 334 meters Accommodations : Troutbeck

Farm-to-Table, Field-to-Glass

Today we ride north, stopping at the best local coffee shop and roaster for a truly perfect cup. Fueled up, we’ll pedal along the newest section of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail and through beautiful farm country. Lunch is fresh and hyper-local, relying on ingredients from farms in the area, followed by a visit to a nearby distillery. The Hudson Valley was once the breadbasket (and therefore also the “liquor basket”) of the young nation, where hundreds of small distilleries transformed their crops into grain alcohol. The distillery shares how it revived this tradition during a tour and tasting of their whiskeys and bourbons. Ride or transfer back to the hotel, where tonight we’ll toast at a private dinner on Troutbeck’s estate.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Boston Corner, Ancramdale, Shekomeko Accomplished : 25 miles / 40 km, elevation gain: 1,171 feet / 357 meters Longer Option : 48 miles / 78 km, elevation gain: 2,398 feet / 731 meters Accommodations : Troutbeck

Pedal west today towards the Hudson river through the heart of horse country, with its magnificent pastures and estates. Our destination is the historic town of Rhinebeck, founded by Dutch settlers in the 17th century and home to the oldest hotel in the country. Enjoy a final lunch at a relaxed foodie restaurant before transferring back to Troutbeck to say “see you later” to the Hudson Valley. For those taking the train, your guides will bid you farewell at the Wassaic station.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch Destinations : Bangall, Stanfordville, Rhinebeck Accomplished : 35 miles / 56 km, elevation gain: 2,365 feet / 673 meters Shorter Option : 25 miles / 40 km, elevation gain: 1,540 feet / 470 meters

Local news | actor mandy patinkin tours ’empty’ hudson valley mall, points out lack of businesses.

The entrance to the Hudson Valley Mall in the town of Ulster can be seen on Thursday, June 6, 2024. (Tania Barricklo/Daily Freeman)

Patinkin, renowned for his performance in films including “The Princess Bride” and “Yenti,” as well as television shows such as “Chicago Hope,” “Criminal Minds,” and “Homeland,” was filmed in the mall, remarking about its “emptiness” as well as the decline of malls across the United States.

Patinkin owns a home in High Falls, according to the New York Times.

@mandypatinktok American Mall ♬ original sound – Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn G

“Another American empty mall,” Patinkin said, being filmed by his son. “This makes me feel a little bit like, my country not knowing what to do.”

“It’s amazing that they’re here, everything’s going well,” Patinkin joked, while walking past Jimmy Jazz.

Patinkin said the mall was a good location for relay races, potato sack races, and dirt-bike riding, given the extensive hallways devoid of storefronts. After talking to a passerby, Patinkin suggested that the mall could be put to a different use, such as housing.

Hudson Valley Mall, which originally opened in 1981, is the only mall in Ulster County. Changes in the local retail industry, part of a nationwide decline of brick-and-mortar stores, have led to a significant loss of tenants. H&M, F.Y.E., and Hot Topic locations all left the mall in early 2020, followed by anchor store Best Buy’s departure in October of the same year.

However, some establishments have opened in recent years, with Nuvance Health’s “GoHealth” urgent care facility opening in the former Macy’s location in 2020.

It is a compact, lightweight super-packed nugget of information! Traveling by bicycle is a great way to explore near home as well as afar. I love that the book provides safety information and is very detailed about where the trail is on and off-road. Those who pay attention to these details will not be taken by surprise when they venture out to explore the Empire State Trail. This book is a great way to get anyone's trip off on the right foot, whether it's exploring your own backyard, branching out into another part of the state or planning an international trip. Rich Z., Adirondack Cycling Advocates, Glens Falls, NY:

The book offers maps of all the sections of the trails which give a great idea of where you will be cycling. Each section shows places to visit along the way to allow you to not only enjoy the cycling but also enjoy the other attractions of the area. Detailing the types of surfaces you will encounter, both on and off road, allows you to make sure your bicycle is the right type and properly equipped for the adventure. For multi-day adventures, the guide offers hotels, campgrounds and breweries as well as bicycle shops if you need any supplies or help along your trip. It lays out many points of interest: Castle Clinton National Monument in Battery Park (who knew!), to the beautiful Bronx Botanical Gardens just a short distance off the trail to Champlain Canal Lock 9 in Fort Ann, where you can you eat your packed lunch and enjoy the view. Used with the Empire State Trail website, this book is a great way to get you started on your next cycling adventure."
