The most known one is that; Medusa was one of the most beautiful girls in the ancient times, famous for her black eyes, long hair and beautiful body. She has fallen in love with Perseus, the semi-god son of Zeus.

On the contrary, the jealous Athena was also in love with Perseus and so Athena cursed Medusa and converted her hair into snakes and her beauty went away. Her glance also started to gorgonise the men looking at her. And after, Perseus headed off Medusa and beat the enemies by using her power.

According to another myth; Medusa was one of the three Gorgonas (female monster of the underworld in Greek mythology) with snake-head.

This large underground cistern is built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian (527-565) to solve the drinking water problem in the city. The Basilica Cistern was used for a while after the conquest of Istanbul by the Ottomans in 1453 and water was supplied to the gardens of Topkapı Palace, where the Sultans lived.  

The water from the cistern was still water. That’s why it was not preferred by some of the Ottoman Sultan who liked to drink running water. After some water facilities were established in the city, the Cistern was completely forgotten until it was rediscovered by the Dutch traveler P. Gyllius who visited Istanbul in to investigate the Byzantine ruins.

When the Cistern was unearthed, it was not in a condition to be used and required a massive renovation. The biggest renovation project during the Republican period was initiated by the Istanbul Municipality in 1985. With the removal of 50,000 tons of mud and the construction of the excursion platform, it was completed on September 9, 1987, and reopened to visitors.  

The Basilica Cistern became one of the top tourist destinations since then. This place attracts millions of travelers each year due to its historical and impressive atmosphere. • After being designated as a museum, it’s been one of the best tourist attractions. Since then, Basilica Cistern has received a lot of attention from local and international visitors.
• Cistern’s famous visitors include former US President Bill Clinton, Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok, former Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini, former Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson, and Austrian former Prime Minister Thomas Klestil.

The Architecture of Basilica Cistern

Basilica Cistern (Yetebatan Sarnici) is a huge building covering a rectangular area of 140 m in length and 70 m in width. It is descended by a 52-step stone staircase, having 336 columns, each 9 m in height. These columns, constructed at intervals of 4.80 meters from each other, form 28 rows of 12 in each row.  

The columns rising in the water fascinate the visitors with their architecture as soon as they enter the cistern. The ceiling weight of the cistern was transferred to the columns by means of round cruciform vaults and arches. Most of the columns are understood to have been collected from older buildings and carved from the granite of various types of marble.

The headings of these columns have different features from place to place. While 98 of them reflect the Corinthian style , some of them belong to the Doric style.  

The cistern is built of bricks, 4.80 m. thick walls and brick-tiled floor were plastered with a thick layer of Khorasan mortar and made watertight. This cistern has an area of ​​9800 m2 in total, and its water storage capacity is nearly 100,000 tons.

The impressive pillars are decorated with the repetitions of Peacock Eyes, Drooping Branch, and Teardrop shapes in carving and relief. After passing the middle part of the Cistern, it is about 40 m. inward from the southwest wall. A total of 40 columns, 9 columns in the longest part and 2 columns in the narrowest part, cannot be seen because they are behind these walls.

Medusa Heads In the Basilica Cistern

There are two Medusa Heads, located under the columns in the northwest corners of the Basilica Cistern and used as pedestals. These are among the most beautiful masterpieces of Roman period sculpture art. It is still a question mark today, where these structures were found and brought here.  

There are still legends about the Head of Medusa. According to a rumor, Medusa is a woman who is always proud of her black eyes, long hair, and perfect body, and she is in love with Perseus, the son of Zeus. But it is known that Athena also fell in love with Perseus and was jealous of Medusa. Rumor indicates that Athena turned Medusa's hair into snakes. And on top of that, it is said that everyone who Medusa looks at turns into stone. That is why these Medusa Heads in the Basilica Cistern are placed upside-down to avoid its direct gaze.  

Medusa, one of the three Gorgonas, in Greek Mythology, is the female monster of the underworld. Of these three sisters, only Medusa with the Snake Head is positive. At that time, it is thought that the paintings and sculptures of Gorgona's heads were placed in order to protect large structures. Medusa was placed here to protect this private place. These Medusa Heads are crucial for the Basilica Cistern which makes here one of the top travel spots to visit in İstanbul. If you wish to be part of this underground exploration, please be at the meeting point, at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time and without prior booking. The Basilica Cistern Tour starts at the main bus stop for the Big Bus Tour Company at Sultanahmet Square. Look out for the dark red double-decker buses. It’s about 20 metres (65 ft) in front of the Hagia Sophia Museum.

About Basilica Cistern

Constructed between 527 and 565 by the Byzantine Emperor I. Justinian, the Basilica Cistern is one of the most imposing and well-preserved sights in Istanbul. An interesting fact about it is that, it has the capacity to store 100000 tons of water. The whole structure is supported by 336 marble columns, each of them being 9 meters tall. One of them most notable features found in the Basilica Cistern, is a roman sculpture known as the Medusa Head. The beauty of this incredible marble head is unique and interesting, just as the interpretations about its meaning. According to ancient mythology, Medusa was in love with Zeus and Athena cursed her. Her hair turned into snakes and any man who looked at her was turning into a stone. It is believed that the head of Medusa was placed there in order to protect the structure.

Meeting point

For the purposes of the Basilica Cistern Guided Tour, the meeting point is at Sultanahmet Square, just in front of Hagia Sophia Museum. Therefore, if you are reaching the meeting point via public transportation, use the T1 tram line, direction Bağılar – Kabataş, which takes you directly to Sultanahmet station. Once there, walk towards Hagia Sophia and check for the meeting point. Sultanahmet Square is at the city centre, which means that, you can always walk there or use a taxi service. You are instructed to be at the meeting point at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time of the tour.

Lines were not long (10 minutes wait) & I'm glad I just bought my tickets directly there. Beautiful experience not to be missed. Tip: Watch Tom Hanks in Inferno, flimed here.

What's the mystery behind Medussa's head? No one knows....

HIGHLY suggest purchasing online tickets as the queue will be shorter. (Yet there is still a queue for "skip the line" tickets). Operationally, it could be better organized. Historically, what a sight to see.

Saved this attraction for a rainy day. My visit confirms my premonition, it is not a "must do" unless you have extra time. It is the largest cistern I have seen and must have been a feat back in the day. However, present day it feels like a large pool with nice lighting. At first sight, I expected more sections to visit but it is basically one large cavern three stories below ground. Best pictures are halfway through the one way walkway. I recommend taking your time because what you see is what you get at first sight. At the halfway point, you view some art pieces and a few unique column bases. I don't think it is worth the 300 lira entrance fee. Logistically, there was a line wrapping around the corner. Even so, it kept moving and took about twenty minutes to get to the ticket counter. I spent more time online through their official site for buying tickets which would have saved time if it worked. More importantly I didn't want to stand in the rain but ended doing the very thing. As most venues in Turkey they use a third party to process their orders where you must create an account and need a Turkish phone number. The site does not work properly as I tried on different devices. It does not allow you to select non-resident. Otherwise, you need to type in Turkish national ID. Price difference for nationals and foreigners as in most tourist attractions in Istanbul. Note, no bathrooms.

Located right next to the Hagia Sophia, The Basilica Cistern is a must-see place when you're in Istanbul, Turkey. If you're already in the area, I highly recommend you check it out. It doesn't take long to go through it and the massiveness will impress you. Since I live in Italy, I thought the Medusa heads were awesome. I also like how they change the colors of lights periodically, as well as the interesting art installments. Don't skip out!

From Russia with Love, the classic James Bond movie is one of my favorites in the series. I have most likely seen it about thirty times and never did I ever dream that I would be visiting Yerebatan Saray Sarnici, Sultanahmet Square, Basilica Cistern many years later. The Cistern is also featured in other movies and video games. The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that are below the city of Istanbul. It was built during the 6th century. It is impressive. The ticket line was not exceptionally long but it moved along quite well unlike Topaki Palace. We entered and instantly I wanted to stay here the rest of the day. I was awestruck by how large the space was and while there's not a lot of water, there is still some, so be prepared to walk on grates. Wearing comfortable shoes is a must. There are different lines that are shown on the columns and the many artistic displays through the Cistern. Take your time and enjoy each one. The Basilica was recently renovated and opened back up in 2022, and I'm so glad that we had a chance to visit. While some may same it's not a must-visit, I found the experience to be amazing and I do recommend visiting especially if the weather is not permitting. Enjoy!

Awesome. Breath taking and more. This has been among my favorite tourist spots because if it's blow you away beauty and history. The Basilica Cistern, or Cisterna Basilica is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul, Turkey ans was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian. I was told that the materials used to construct the basilica or scrap materials from nearby buildings upon inspection. That is true. The pillows are not finished some have work started. Others are just raw the pillars are not the same length and when that occurred, they would put whatever else they had around underneath it to make the pillar, the same height as the others, that could just be a lump of marble or a finished piece of something that didn't make the cut. Apparently the Basilica is the number one Instagram spot in Turkey. Photo ops abound, including the art pieces scattered about. Historical texts claim that 7,000 slaves were involved in the construction of the cistern. The enlarged cistern provided a water filtration system for the Great Palace of Constantinople and other buildings on the First Hill, and continued to provide water to the Topkapı Palace after the Ottoman conquest in 1453 and into modern times. The existence of the cistern was eventually forgotten by all but the locals who still drew water from it until, in 1565, the French traveller Petrus Gyllius left a record of it. Gyllius recorded being rowed in between the columns and seeing fish swimming in the water beneath the boat. Sean Connery rowed through as James Bond. Basilica Cistern is a must visit when visiting Istanbul. It's the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns built in the 6th century. Apart from its amazing history, this is a great location for photographers to capture amazing and fun photos. Tickets can be purchased online or on-site like I did and I believe it was $300 Lire per person for non-Turkish residents. There wasn't a huge line when I went on a Tuesday morning but they do get a bunch of tour groups who get priority for entrance. Get there early to avoid any prolonged wait. There is no pressure in how long you can stay, so you can enjoy and take in all the ancient history at your pace.

This is a must-see for visiting Istanbul!! Ir is so worth the wait and price for admission. I can't believe the city is built on top of these ancient cisterns and that there is still water flowing. It is definitely a really cool thing to see and was the highlight of my day in Istanbul! There are a lot of people that will try to sell you a guided tour as you are waiting. We found that just the regular skip-the-line ticket is sufficient and you can just walk around and take photos on your own. Definitely very very cool.
