Itinerary Street Art Experience

Ready to see a different side of Valencia’s old town? Let’s get lost in the small streets of El Carmen, off the beaten path! This walking street art tour takes you on an adventure through the lesser-known streets of Valencia, where we’ll unveil surprising works of art from local and international artists, such as impressive murals, hidden graffiti gems and urban art masterpieces.

In Valencia, the street art scene really started to grow from the late 90’s with local artists such as Escif, David de Limon, Julieta XLF, DEIH and La Nena Wapa Wapa as well as international artists such as Disneylexya and Hyuro. It is a constantly evolving, changing scene with art appearing and disappearing in different parts of Valencia. Street artists use the most rundown corners in the city, such as crumbled walls or neglected buildings, as a canvas. The ephemeral nature of urban art means that these artworks often vanish or are replaced/removed overnight. That’s also how street art stays current!

Graffiti is clandestine in Valencia but if you’re lucky you can spot some artists working in the daylight. The street art is highly approved by the locals, that’s why authorities might turn a blind eye. ‘Grey Rita’ is the color the local city council uses to cover the works of art if they feel they are inappropriate or illegal. Nevertheless, many associations, neighbors or local businesses choose to decorate their walls or shutters and contract local street artists.

Let’s unveil the stories and inspiration behind each artwork, so you can truly appreciate the depth of creativity that colors the city. Enjoy historical sights while the local street art will invite us to share fascinating stories about the city’s past, adding a unique dimension to your experience.

Street art combined with local drinks & tapas tour

Last but not least, besides discovering street art we’ll also enjoy local tapas and drinks! After the first part of the tour, we’ll arrive at this really nice terrace of a local wine bar for an aperitif. It’s got one of the oldest bodegas in the city center – how cool is that? And guess what? We’ll be enjoying some of the best local Valencian wine or vermouth with two small tapas.

And that’s not all! Towards the end of our street art adventure, we’ll arrive at a cozy, small family owned restaurant. The owner Jesus prepares an amazing standing cocktail with local drinks and a tasting of 3 delicious homemade tapas! It’s gonna be the perfect way to wrap up our tour in style and enjoy each other’s company, cheers to the good times!

Urban Art Tour in Valencia

Get to know the Urban Art in Valencia

Whether you’re a master painter or not an artist at all, you’ll see the streets of Valencia covered with beautiful representations at each turn.  One of the Coolest Things to do in Valencia is the Street Art Tour in Valencia .  Of all of the Tours in Valencia, the urban art tour is the one to go on to see murals and graffiti of numerous urban artists who have turned the city of Valencia into a giant museum.

Street art tour in Valencia

Our U rban Art Tour in Valencia starts in Calle Peydro and goes towards Plaza de la Merced, which is very close to the Central Market (Mercado Central) . In this street, you can find graffiti of two artists: Hyuro and Escif .

Hyuro is an Argentinian-born artist who is lives in Valencia. His pseudonym consists of both his first and last name.

Escif is one of the biggest players in the Valencian street art scene- to many he is even known as the Spanish Banksy .

Furgon policial

The next piece by Hyuro is in all grey tones- showing the identity of Hyuro’s work. This is an artist that always invites us to reflect on the weight of living in a city, the complexity of integrating into a society, and animal abuse. On this mural, injured deer surrounded by spotlights are the protagonists of the painting. The whole world sees them, but no on tries to help.

In the same area as these murals, many other artists have left their mark on the shutters of local stores .  This is a form of art that can only be enjoyed for only a short amount of time, considering that the shutter is only put down when the shops are closed .  Some of these paintings have some context to the nature of the store, and some are completely unrelated- keep an eye out for interesting pieces on your next walk through Valencia.

jauria de lobos atacando un taxi

Next for the tour: walk towards the street Numancia, where you can observe various pieces of  street art  with many bright colors, that were created by Hyuro and Escif .

The tour continues in Calle de la Estameñeria , where you can find numerous colorful and bright pieces of graffiti, with a touch of abstract art, created by Esik , a  Valencian graffiti artist who started making the streets more colorful in the mid 90’s.

julieta xlf

In the case of Julieta XLF , it is not necessary for her to leave her signature, since her work can be recognized very easily. Her illustrations include Japanese influences and her colorful murals are full of imaginary of animals, whimsical girls, and plants that are very characteristic and speak for themselves.  This is a direct contrast to the work of Cere , who pieces are grey toned, simple, and always with a clearly bold message.

Stop War Victim’s Wall

If you return to Calle Caballeros and cross  Plaza de San Jaime , you’ll get to Calle Alta and Calle Baja . Both have beautiful and enormous murals on their buildings. In Calle Baja you can find an urban mural which shows a rabbit strangling a chicken over a paella pan . This is the work of the Italian artist Erica Il Cane. This work of art suggests that the chicken and the rabbit fight to death to decide which is the best ingredient for the paella valenciana . Below them you see the paella pan and a group of people in grey tones who are waiting to eat and are watching the scene without intervening.

Julieta XlF

In Calle de la Benefcencia , you can enjoy more works of  Julieta XLF .

Deih

On the other side in Calle Ripalda , you can find Calle Doctor Chiarri , where you are you can see two big and bright murals by Julieta XLF .

calle na jordana

To end the urban art tour, in Calle de Na Jordana , you can find  Plaza de Bere Borrego and  Galindo , which leads into Calle Museo , in which you can see Casa de los Gatos del Carmen and the  Iglesia del antiguo Convento del Carmen . After this street you can find Plaza del Carmen , where you can find the headquarters of the  Asociación de Ciudadanos Mayores de la Comunidad Valenciana (CIMA)- on this building is one of the murals that best represent the monuments of the city.

art tour valencia

Last but not least, in Calle Roteros you can enjoy the demonstrative messages of Cere , the adorable Japanese dolls of Julieta XLF and the urban art murals that decorate some shops in the street. From this point, we would like to recommend you to visit the Serranos Towers .

If you want to return to where you started the  Street art tour in Valencia ,  you can take the bus lines 6 , 16 and 26 of EMT Valencia, to  Plaza del Ayuntamiento .

What are we going to see?

Join us on the free tour STREET ART – ALTERNATIVE VALENCIA and you will discover El Carmen , a neighborhood that modern that sometimes it’s difficult to define.

Its history dates back from the XIII century, when the city of Valencia was conquered. El Carmen, with its inspiring corners, its laberintic streets, inherited from the islamic urban planning, it is a large district turned into an urban museum, and at night it is a great choice to enjoy the nightlife of the city.

We are going to discover the most popular muralists and graffiti artists (locals, nationals and internationals) that have left their footprint in the walls of this discrict, offering us their ephemeral works.

How did graffiti come about? What is a tag ? We will learn to identify the different techniques: spray, paint, stickers, stencil, paste-up…

Urban art will be our inseparable companion, present in every street we pass, surprising us with its colourfulness, challenging us to reflect on its message, interacting with us and creating a totally unexpected creative dialogue.

After a two and a half hour tour of this open-air museum, we will end the free graffiti tour by saying goodbye near the Carmen Square .

Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia

San Pío V 9, 46010 - València

museo de bellas artes exterior

TOURISTIC AREA: Historical center

Spain's second largest art gallery

The second largest art gallery in Spain, with works from the 15th to the 19th centuries, including rooms dedicated to the magnificent oeuvre of the famous Valencian painter Joaquín Sorolla, as well as a room dedicated to Francisco de Goya.

The Gothic art rooms are very impressive, and the rooms of the painters and sculptors Pinazo and Benlliure are very representative of the Valencian school.

Furthermore the museum excels in its collection of Renaissance paintings, with Valencia being the entrance of the artistic influences of this style in Spain. Neither must one miss the Courtyard of Ambassador Vich and the previously unseen work of Velázquez.

The historical building that houses the museum was originally the San Pío Seminary College, founded in 1683 by Brother Juan Tomás de Rocabertí, the Archbishop of Valencia. The architect Juan Bautista Pérez Castiel, master of works on the Cathedral, was responsible for its design. Building work was carried out between 1683 and 1744, although the church was partly demolished in 1925. The building has been used for three different purposes: A Military Cadet Academy, a Charity Centre, an army supplies storehouse and a Military Hospital, until 1946 when it was chosen to be used for the Museum of Fine Arts. The artistic journey begins with a selection of the so-called Primitivos Valencianos (medieval painters), which covers the period between the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 16th century, displaying the work of such emblematic artists as Alcanyís, Nicolau, Jacomart and Reixach among others. Also exhibited are the works of painters from the Valencian School such as Joanes, los Ribalta, Espinosa, Vicente López, Soralla, Pinazo and others. Other exhibits include works by Pintoricchio, Andrea del Sarto, Van Dyck, Murillo, Velázquez, El Greco and Goya. Also displayed is a wide collection of drawings and etchings as well as sculptures, archaeological pieces, architectonic fragments and some examples of portable art.

Ultimate Guide to Street Art in Valencia

The street art in Valencia is awe-inspiring. And as much as I love to just wander the streets to discover new pieces of art, it’s fascinating to learn about the meanings behind street art.

So I strolled through the city, especially the el Carmen neighbourhood, since that’s where most of the street art is located, and tried to look up the meaning of the art afterwards.

In this article, I want to share some of the best street art in Valencia I found and the meaning behind them. You can also take a tour and listen to the guide tell the stories behind the street art.

The best street art in Valencia

The great akimbo.

Akimbo is a queer Spanish artist who focuses on queer mythology and history. Their style is futuristic and otherworldly. In Valencia, you can admire their first big mural. It was created as part of the art festival Intramurs in 2021.

The alien-like person on the mural is inspired by Margarida Borrás. She was the first transgender woman in Valencia who got executed in 1460 because of her identity.

In the mural, she is transformed into a future deity with galactic eroticism. She holds a rope, with which she was executed and turns it into new life.

Hyuro – Escif

This piece of street art in Valencia is located opposite the botanical garden. It was just around the corner from our apartment and every time I walked past it I felt drawn to it. And after reading the meaning behind it, it became even more special.

The piece has the name Hyuro on it, but it’s not painted by Hyuro. It’s painted by Escif in memory of the street artist Hyuro, who passed away in 2020 because of leukaemia.

Hyuro’s real name was Tamara Djurovic. She was originally from Argentina, and during her studies, she moved to Valencia and ended up staying in the city.

You can find murals by her all over the world, but particularly in Spain. In her works, she voiced issues like gender-based violence by portraying faceless women in an overscale dimension.

Mural by Hyuro

A few days later I accidentally stumbled upon a mural by Hyuro and recognised it immediately, even before I read her name.

The headless woman represents Jane Jacobs as you can read on the orb she’s holding. Jane Jacobs is known for her community-based approach to building cities.

Stillo Noir

Tanya Heidrich is the artist behind Stillo Noir . She transfers what she sees in the world into black-and-white patterns and creates unique designs.

In Valencia, you can find this mural, which was painted after Pride Month. It’s supposed to draw attention to the fact that it’s not enough to celebrate the queer community one month per year and to forget or even marginalize them the rest of the year.

She wrote an amazing description of her thought process on her webpage, you can read the full article here . In it, she expresses her wish for the mural:

I hope this mural can act as a little sign of validation, a little token of our community, to people who need it 365 days of the year. Stillo Noir

Behind the name, Dridali is the Valencian-born street artist Adrián Mateo. His art portrays faces in a hyper-realistic style. He tries to not only capture real-life faces but also capture their emotions.

I try that my work is not a simple reproduction of a photograph, my main objective is to represent the perfect expression of the person portrayed, turning the public space into a space for reflection. I am lucky to paint in the largest museum of the world: the street, the one that allows entry to all citizens, regardless of gender, economic situation or religion Dridali

Disneylexya

Disneylexya is originally from Chile and creates colourful murals which combine mythology with modern symbology. They contain medieval European bestiaries, Latin American aesthetics and elements of the Chilean street art scene from the 70s.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find more information about this specific piece, but I like the colours and patterns a lot, so I wanted to add it to my list.

David de Limón

Graffiti ninja next to a signpost

If you walk around and have your eyes open for Valencia graffiti there’s no way you can miss David de Limón . He is the artist behind the masked person you can see everywhere.

There was much discussion about what the masked man means, many people see a ninja in it who sneaks around the city and can pop up everywhere. In an interview with Le Cool, David de Limón clarifies the true reason behind the masked figure: (auto-translated by Google)

In reality, he didn’t mean to be a karateka or a ninja, he is a masked character who is dedicated to painting on the streets and who represents my signature. It is masked because despite the acceptance that Street Art and graffiti have today, they are still somewhat vandal-eous and so you have to hide or hide. David de Limón

Two graffiti ninja spraying paint at each other

There are so many of those masked men in Valencia, I tried to take a picture of everyone I saw and count them. You can see how many I found in my unique things in Valencia list.

Xelon creates a universe with robotics in his artwork. In this way, he tries to bring sensitivity and humanity, with a hint of humour, to our everyday lives.

In the future robots will be more human than humans, simply because humans are ever less sensitive and robots will continue being programmed to be human. Xelon

You can not only find Xelon’s art outside on the street but also in the CCCC museum in Valencia. The Centro del Carmen de Cultura Contemporánea museum is a modern art museum in el Carmen with free admission.

In the Valencia art museum, Xelo contributed to the exhibition on climate change. You can still see his works for “Emergency on Planet Earth” in the toilets. So don’t miss out on going to the toilet if you visit the museum!

El Rey De La Ruina

Colourful graffiti by El Rey de la Ruina

The artist behind El Rey De La Ruina is based in Madrid, but you can find some of his work in Valencia and other cities as well. The King of Ruin, as his name translates to English, wants to bring people to reflect and question the established.

This colourful piece in Valencia celebrates everyone who is different. In the artist’s own words:

I dedicate it to all the non-conformist people who create their own path, who question the rules. Long live the difference! All power to the weirdos El Rey De La Ruina

Astronaut with an astronaut inside and so on

DEIH is one of the most famous street artists in Valencia. Most works you can find by him are space themed. With this space theme, he tries to express the difference between people’s perspectives.

The perspectives are sometimes so different, they might as well be from different worlds and still, people try to find a common denominator.

Recently, I’ve been developing a project called “The Insider,” which is part of an introspective investigation of my feelings and life. I draw my inner life as I consider my relationships with others and myself. Thus, I understand science-fiction representational codes as a way to achieve (to construct) a personal truth. DEIH

DEIH takes the meaning of street art to a new level with this three-dimensional piece of art, as you can see in the picture. In this work, you can see his take on perceptions especially well.

Barbiturikills and Sr. Marmota

Mural about agriculture right next to an urban garden

One thing I really like about street art in Valencia is how intertwined the different artists are.

Many artists have very unique styles, so you immediately recognise their work in cooperations. Barbiturikills for example is known for her bunnies, with which she expresses her motto as an artist: “Revolution, love and humor”.

You can easily see Barbiturikills’ part in this big mural which she created with Sr. Marmota . The mural itself is located right next to an urban garden and it is “A tribute to agriculture and the generosity of the Valencian land”.

The urban garden is also a reminder that Valencia is the home of the traditional paella .

hourglass with birds and a paper boat flying out

There’s not much information to be found online about La Nena and the meaning behind her art. But since you cannot walk around Valencia without finding a piece of this artist sooner or later, I wanted to include her in this list anyway.

She is a female street artist from Valencia who describes herself as a visual poet. You can find multiple collaborations of La Nena with David de Limón.

InnovaMural

Appreciation for the Red Cross graffiti

This piece of street art in Valencia is a bit different from all the others. It’s clearly a commissioned piece by the red cross, but it shows the appreciation and importance of street art in Valencia. The art collective created a 60-square-meter piece of art on the walls of the Valencian red cross station.

highlighting the great humanitarian work of the volunteer team and people employed in the center and expressing the needs in many corners of the world and humanitarian solidarity towards the most vulnerable groups. InnovaMural

Valencia Street Art Map

You can find a lot of Valencia street art by just walking around. In case you want to make sure not to miss the ones I wrote about, you can find the locations on this street art Valencia map.

Even though El Carmen street art is the most popular, you’ll find street art all over Valencia and not just in the El Carmen neighbourhood.

Final Thoughts: Street Art Valencia

The pieces of graffiti Valencia I mentioned in this article are by far not the only ones you can find. I just chose the ones which I stumbled upon, which are credited by the artist and where I could find sufficient information about the artist and the art online.

🤩 Book your Valencia street art tour now!

There are numerous other beautiful murals you can admire though. After all checking out the amazing street art in Valencia is one of the best things to do in Valencia for free .

And you can try to discover the meaning behind them yourself or try to come up with your own interpretation.

Valencia is the capital of the Valencian Province and is one of the top cities in attracting tourists from all over the world. Located in southern Spain, it lies on the Mediterranean coast and is the point where Turia River meets the sea. This privileged position makes it the third-largest city in Spain, behind Madrid and Barcelona. Although it is a coastal city, you wouldn’t know that as you walk through the narrow streets of its Old Town during one of the best times to visit, Spring when the colors are at their brightest and the temperatures are perfect. But you may want to consider going there a little earlier to get the chance to celebrate this city’s largest street festival, Las Fallas.

Having so many iconic places to visit, it could be very helpful to start your holidays off with the help of a local guide, or guru, who can show you all the major spots and those lesser-known gems on the tour routes so you can discover the true side of Valencian culture and history while giving you some insider tips on what and where to eat! There are different free walking tours in Valencia which will take you around to amazing places like The City of Arts and Sciences , with its 7 modern architectural buildings, L'Hemisfèric,(IMAX Theater) the Principe Felipe Science Museum, L'Umbracle, the Oceanographic, (Aquarium) the Palau de les Arts, (Opera Hall) the Agora and the Bridge of L'Assut d'or. There are other tours with different routes that will take you to the Old Town to see other historic places like the Virgen’s Square with the Cathedral and the Basilica of the Virgen, or you could visit Valencia City Hall and the generous Square of the same name in front, the Lonja, the Central Market, The Serrano Towers and the old, medieval gate to the Old Town, or you could also take a stroll down Turia Gardens, and even go to the largest freshwater lagoon in Spain, La Albufera, where you can see the diversity in plant and wildlife at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea.

All the free walking tours in Valencia have reviews and opinions from other travelers who have already done the guided tour, and about both the route and the local guru. Book and choose a tour in the morning, the afternoon, or the evening depending on your own itinerary. What’s more, you may also be interested in checking out similar free walking tours in other Spanish cities like Alicante or Tarragona.
