There are several locations in Zanzibar where you can spot the turtles, but when it comes to swimming with them, there is only one place called Baraka Natural Aquarium in Nungwi beach. One of the most popular spots for the turtles in Zanzibar. Here, visitors can feed and swim with the turtles in their sanctuary.

Other Turtles Locations

Another popular location is Mnarani Turtles Conservation Pond, which is close to Baraka aquarium. This is a non-profit organization which was established as a response to the declining numbers of the sea turtles.

Here you won’t swim with the turtles, instead you will feed them and have a short tour to learn about the biology and behavior of sea turtles, as well as the conservation efforts being made to protect them.

Other places you can rarely spot turtles while snorkeling are at  Mnemba Island reefs, Chumbe Island reefs, Nungwi Beach, Kendwa and many other marine areas of Zanzibar Island.

Nungwi Mnarani Aquarium

Mnarani, meaning, 'place of the lighthouse‘ in Swahili, is located at the northern tip of Zanzibar Island in the small village of Nungwi near the lighthouse that marks this landmark. The pond is actually a large, natural tidal pool in the coral rock behind the beach. It was originally set up to rehabilitate and study marine turtles that had been caught in fishing nets and the project developed to ensure that local baby turtles were also protected.

Mnarani Aquarium

Marine Turtle Conservation Sanctuary

zanzibar turtle tour

The Nungwi Mnarani Aquarium is a sea turtle conservation project located on the northern-most end of Nungwi Beach . A sanctuary committed to the nurturing and rehabilitation of marine turtles, it unveils the delicate marine ecosystem through its conservation pond and natural aquarium.

The turtle conservation pond is a natural lagoon separated from the Indian Ocean by a few meters of old reef rocks, but the tide within the lagoon is a clear indication that the connection with the ocean is open. A wooden pier was built on one half of the lagoon, allowing a better access to the Sea Turtles, offering a second information pavilion as well as a small interaction platform.

The center also offers several smaller pools to keep the baby and juvenile sea turtles, to treat injured or sick turtles, as well as some other large vivariums to keep other indigenous wildlife.

Every February, an annual release party is held when injured turtles that have been rehabilitated are released back into the ocean.

Learn more about the project at their Facebook and Instagram pages.

“Trash to Treasures” creative recycling/up cycling project

In Zanzibar, waste is a problem of growing concern, as there are no functioning waste management systems in place. Since June 2016, The aquarium has been working with World Unite under the direction of the team member Lisa by running several activities in Nungwi that have the aim to raise awareness amongst the local population about the waste problem and to support them in the creation of useful items for everyday life from recycled materials, which might even generate a small additional income to them.

Volunteers are creating useful and decorative everyday items from waste materials. At the marine turtle bungalow accommodation you will find some furniture and decorative objects which were made by volunteers.

They include the use of “bottle cutters”, which allow the cutting of strings from plastic bottles that can then be used to weave curtains, nets for chairs and many other things. Lisa and the volunteers are also making “ubuntublox”: Soft plastic such as plastic bags and foil material are pressed in a self-made compactor to form blocks that can be used to build inexpensive and resource saving walls.

This made the expansion of the lagoon as an extra of the working tour guided by our experienced local guides.

ABOUT THE TOUR

This island is named after the prison that was built in 1893. The prison was originally intended to house violent prisoners from the mainland and people sick with yellow fever. However, the prison is now owned by a hotel. In addition to the prison, the island is also home to a tortoise sanctuary.

The sanctuary contains a large colony of giant tortoises that were imported from Seychelles in the late 19th century. During your visit to the sanctuary, you will learn about efforts to protect the tortoises. These creatures have an average weight of 200 kg and many of them are over 150 years old.

You’ll have the opportunity to touch them and take photos. Moreover, the island is home to a stunning colony of peacocks. For the remainder of the trip, you can choose to either snorkel around the coral that fringes Prison Island and enjoy the marine life or simply relax under the warm sun until we return to Stone Town.

Escape to northern Zanzibar where a natural lagoon is filled with sea turtles. During the tour, you can feed the turtles seaweed or simply spend your time in the water with them. You can also take snorkel masks to dive and observe them in their natural environment.

Swim with turtles

We are currently the only place in Zanzibar where this is possible Welcome to Baraka Natural Aquarium Come to the best turtle aquarium in Zanzibar and enjoy the chance to see, feed and swim with these beautiful native animals Our turtles are brought to us after been caught in a fishing net and injured. Once they reach a certain size, we release them into the ocean. Turtles frequently nest on Nungwi Beach, and village volunteers now mark and monitor new nests.

The young turtles thus born are transported in small plastic basins and small concrete tanks to the aquarium where they remain for ten months. By this time, they have reached a size of 25 cm, and their chances of survival at sea are greatly increased. All but one of these turtles are then released back into the sea, along with the largest turtle in the aquarium tank. The remaining baby turtle is then added to the tank, which ensures a static population of 17 turtles.

Northern Beaches

Zanzibar’s most popular beaches are found in Nungwi.  This is mostly because the tides don’t have such a big impact on the beach.  But did you know that Nungwi is also the capital of local dhow manufacturing?  Learn how these impressive sailboats are made and get the chance to see local craftsmen in action.

This tour was designed to give our customers the indepth knowledge and experience about the endangered turtles in Zanzibar but also giving you chance to contribute in the well-being for as many people come to visit the site the more opportunity they create for the center to provide for the turtles to get favourable environments they need to live and increase .

All species of sea turtles are endangered and their population is constantly declining. Around 85% of all sea turtle deaths are caused by human intervention. This includes poaching for turtle meat, eggs, shelves and fins, which is also widespread in Tanzania. Also, gillnets and trawling nets for fishing are deadly traps for sea turtles. Heavy human construction activity along beaches and coasts for tourism purposes is often done without considering the needs of turtle populations. Plastic waste floating in the ocean is often swallowed by marine turtles, causing their death.

Five of the world's seven species of sea turtles can be found in Tanzania. The two species of Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) are critically endangered, and the three species of Green turtle (Chelonia mydas), Loggerhead Sea turtle (Caretta caretta) and Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) are classified as endangered. Sea turtles have a long life and it takes them long to reach adulthood. This makes them particularly vulnerable to human intervention during all phases of their life.

Discover a sea turtles sanctuary in a large natural lagoon sea turtles are kept, which were rescued with injuries, medically treated, and released into the ocean again. Also turtle eggs are collected from beaches where due to human pressure, their survival is at risk. The eggs are incubated inside the protected area of the sanctuary and the baby turtles are kept in pools and released into the ocean once they reach a certain size. Booking this tour will offer you a chance to be introduced of the various species of turtles found in Zanzibar and have a rare opportunity to swim, feed and play with them.

Description

Baraka’s Turtle Aquarium is a rehabilitation center for injured turtles nestled in a cave, this natural tidal pool is where you are able to swim and feed these amazing animals. You will experience once-in-lifetime moments by swimming with the friendly turtles at the Baraka Natural Aquarium on Nugwi Beach in the north of Zanzibar. The aquarium is actually a small natural pond – a grotto, which serves as a sanctuary for the turtles. The conservancy receives turtles which have been accidentally caught in fishing nets, and gives them a chance to recuperate before being released into the open ocean again. In Baraka Aquarium they are also buying the turtles, caught by fishermen and they are releasing them back to the fresh ocean water in the lagoon. Join us in the north of Zanzibar, you can find one of the natural lagoon full of sea turtles. Use the unique opportunity to swim with sea turtles. During the visit you can also feed turtles with sea weed or just spend your time in the water. Its lovely to run your fingers over their shells and feel them next to you. There is plenty of food (sea weed) provided at the aquarium for you to feed the turtles. Also, you can take snorkelling mask to dive and watch them in their natural environment. The water can feel murky at certain points in the pond, but luckily, there is a shower on site. If you are not a good swimmer, you will have to make do with sitting by the edge of the pond since the water gets quite deep – up to 2 meters – so definitely we will bring a life jacket.

We were one of the first groups for the year because of Covid-19. From start to finish, this company was amazing. They were extremely flexible and tailored our trip to our needs as we were traveling with two young kids. During the trip they checked in daily and were extremely responsive to feedback. I would highly recommend this tour company to anyone looking to take a vacation in Zanzibar.

Fantastic company and excellent service.

Green Zanzibar tours arranged great tours for us. A local well-informed guide took us on a walking tour of Stone Town, and directed us to a great local restaurant. We also had tour of the Jozani forest with a visit and a lunch at a local village. It was amazing to be off the tourist trail and see how real people live and eat. Mohamed also arranged our pickup from the airport and transfers. Everything was perfectly organized and on time!

Fabulous company with a personal touch..

After a wonderfully extensive and tiring 6 weeks of safaris and sight seeing through Kenya and Tanzania, I chose to spend the final 4 days of my trip on Zanzibar. I contacted Rukia months ahead of my journey and received an email with an itinerary suggestion and pricing right away. She provided personalized service and always answered my numerous emails in a very timely manner. I would highly recommend this green company!

North Coast and Turtle Sanctuary

The preservation of turtles in their natural habitat and the construction of traditional dhow boats are just two of the fascinating topics that may be explored on this tour. Visit stunning beaches and maybe even swim with some turtles.

Nungwi is home to some of Zanzibar’s most coveted attractions: its beautiful beaches. This is mainly due to the fact that the tides do not significantly alter the shoreline. But did you know that local dhow production is centered in Nungwi? Learn from local artisans and see them construct these magnificent sailing ships.

Have a late lunch at a nearby eatery on the house, on the house. Then visit an actual turtle rescue center. After being nursed back to health, the turtles are released back into the ocean. Learn how to swim and feed these amazing creatures.

About the Turtle Sanctuary

Natural Aquarium – Nungwi is a home endangered sea turtles and a variety of fish. The aquarium itself is a natural formation carved out from the coral bedrock by the erosion of millions of waves crashing against the shore. The depth of the water rises and falls with the tides providing a natural environment for its inhabitants. You might also wonder to see how the local boats are made, how the fishnets and sails are repaired. Lunch and refreshments are arranged there to taste local delicacies or international food. This is the best trip that gives you the scope to discover the life of local fishermen of the island. After the walk, you can either relax on the sandy beaches or go swimming in the natural sea.

Turtles Zanzibar FAQ

Zanzibar swim with turtles location is Nungwi (northern island)

Turtles in Zanzibar: There are mainly 2 species of marine turtles in Zanzibar’s waters.Green & hawksbill turtles. Wide spread at Nungwi/Mnemba northern Zanzibar

The green turtle is the most common and widespread species in Tanzania. While low density nesting has been reported along the mainland coast from Tanga in the north to Mtwara in the south, the most concentrated numbers of nests appear to be on the offshore islands of Zanzibar

Hawksbills are also widely distributed but are less abundant. Nesting has only been recorded in low numbers on small remote offshore islands such as Misali and Mnemba Islands in Zanzibar.

The main threats to turtles in Tanzania are disturbance of nesting and foraging habitats, incidental net captures (gillnets and trawlers), poaching of meat and eggs, lack of adequate protection and enforcement, limited awareness and land-based development and pollution.

Recommendations for research and monitoring include: further studies on turtle reproduction, nest biology, foraging habitats, genetics and threats; and tagging to determine movements and breeding frequency.

Conservation and management priorities include: protection of key habitats, compulsory use of Turtle Excluder Devices by commercial prawn trawlers and restriction of gillnets in key foraging areas; promotion of community participation in the management of coastal and marine resources through recruitment of Community Turtle Monitors and involvement in Beach Management Units; awareness raising; development of a Turtle Recovery & Action Plan; coordination of activities at national and regional levels by the National Turtle Conservation Committee; and fund raising.

Nungwi, or Ras Nungwi, is a large village located in the far northern end of the island of Zanzibar. With a population of about 5,563, Nungwi is the second- or third-largest settlement on the island. Nungwi was traditionally a fishing village and dhow-building center, but is now a popular tourist destination, and for instance recognized in CNN’s list of “100 best beaches of the world” in 2014 with numerous resorts, restaurants, bars, stores, etc.

-They’re really ancient The oldest known sea turtle fossil is at least 120 million years old, making sea turtles some of the oldest creatures on the planet. That means they shared the planet with dinosaurs which became extinct around 65 million years ago.

-Turtle tears Turtles do cry, but not because they’re sad. They have glands that help to empty excess salt from their eyes, which makes it look like they’re crying.

-Staying alive They live to around 100 years, which is also roughly the number of eggs female sea turtles lay when they nest.

-They can hold their breath for five hours underwater. To accomplish this mighty feat they slow their heart rate to up to nine minutes in between heart beats in order to conserve oxygen.

– TURTLES DON’T HAVE TEETH They use their beak-like mouth to grasp their food. This beak is made of keratin (the same stuff your fingernails are made of).

– Sea turtles lay their eggs in a nest they dig in the sand with their rear flippers. The group of eggs is called a clutch. They usually lay 100-125 eggs per nest and will nest multiple times, about two weeks apart, over several months. As soon as the eggs hatch (roughly 2 months later), the hatchlings dig out of their nest. This process generally takes a few days. Once they emerge, the tiny turtles hurry to the sea and make their way offshore into the open ocean. Sea turtles face many threats, but those that survive to become adults are decades old.

Have you ever wondered why “Nungwi” and “turtles” are often mentioned together? Well, turtles may seem adorable and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but they actually serve an important purpose.

These creatures help control algae populations by eating them. This prevents excessive growth that could damage coral reefs and other underwater structures. In this way, turtles also protect the habitats of various marine species, ensuring healthy breeding and feeding grounds.

In addition, turtles play a critical role in maintaining the balance of the marine food web. Their conservation is essential to maintaining the harmony of the ecosystem. Their unhatched nests, eggs and captured hatchlings contain valuable nutrients that benefit other marine organisms.

That’s where Mnarani Natural Aquarium at Nungwi comes in – ensuring that these incredible animals can continue to fulfill their vital role.

Mnarani Natural Aquarium is dedicated to caring for and rehabilitating sea turtles through its conservation project .

At the aquarium in Nungwi, you have the opportunity to see these amazing creatures up close and even interact with them.

Now, you may be wondering why it’s called a “natural aquarium.” It’s because of its unique setup – there’s a natural lagoon partially separated from the Indian Ocean by ancient reef rocks just a few meters away. Despite this separation, the tides suggest an open connection between the two bodies of water. Within this lagoon area is a wooden pier providing better turtle viewing access.
