Sir Elton John quietly exits Buckhead after 32 years

Home / Buckhead Stories / Sir Elton John quietly exits Buckhead after 32 years

elton john tour atlanta

  • September 6, 2023

On July 9th, 2023 in Stockholm Sweden, Sir Elton John performed the final concert of his 53-year career. His farewell tour had spanned five years and grossed $931 million, reported to be the highest-grossing tour of all time. Meanwhile, halfway around the world, a curtain was closing on another part of the superstar’s life. Though he had called his Buckhead condo “home” since 1991, movers were quietly packing up and moving out a staggering volume of art and personal possessions from his nearly 13,000 square foot condo.

According to multiple Park Place residents, the move-out took nearly a month to complete and Sir Elton John has now left the building, Buckhead, and Atlanta for good.

“People always ask me, ‘Why do you have a place in Atlanta?’” John said in a 1998 AJC interview. “It’s because people here have always been that nice to me… I’ve always been welcomed. I feel at home.”

It all started in 1991 when John’s estate in England near Windsor became too full of memories and possessions. He gutted the residence and auctioned off many belongings while on his path to sobriety. In his search for a new home in the United States he found Los Angeles to be overwhelming and New York unsafe, and he fell in love with the Southern charm of Atlanta.

Making a splash in Buckhead

Jim Henderson, part of the development team behind the Park Place condo tower, remembers getting a call from the onsite sales agent in 1991 when he was on a sailing trip near Hilton Head: “I have Elton John here wanting to buy a condo,” she told him. The offer was $700,000, but Henderson was firm at his $950,000 asking price. “I eventually settled on $925,000 with his agent in London and by the time we were at closing 30 days later Elton had already decided to buy the unit next door. It was great PR for the building and we sold out the rest of the tower over the next couple of years. He was at a turning point in his life at the time and he ended up being great for the building. The other residents loved him and he treated our staff very well.”

After moving here in 1991 Sir Elton John quickly became ingrained into the Buckhead community and surrounding Atlanta area. He was a frequent visitor of Tower Records, dined at area restaurants (Umi Sushi and the now-shuttered Buckhead Diner were purportedly favorites), became a Braves fan, hosted a collection of his photographs at the High Museum of Art, named a 2004 album “Peachtree Road,” and became a frequent face at social functions throughout Buckhead and the Atlanta area.

John also commented that his life “in Atlanta is as normal a life as I can lead anywhere in the world,” and later said he is “an Atlanta person through and through.”

Building a unique home

Over the years, Elton continued to purchase neighboring units to accommodate a vast art collection. Eventually it expanded to include 12,000 + square feet across seven units combined on multiple floors in Park Place. The condo above the intersection of Peachtree Road and West Wesley Rd in the heart of Buckhead is likely to hit the market soon. In a 2016 CBS Sunday Morning interview, viewers got a brief tour of his sprawling condo that was full of artwork and photography collections. The singer was generous with his artwork, loaning it out to the building for display in some common areas and elevator lobbies.

During John’s final Atlanta concert last year, he addressed his semi-hometown crowd about his time in Atlanta.

“I’ve lived here for 30 years, and I’ve loved every single minute,” the AJC reported. “So I will take you with me in my heart, in my soul, and I’ll never forget you.”

Tickets go on sale on June 30th, with presale tickets available to American Express card members beginning on Wednesday at noon local time.

“Hello, all you wonderful fans out there. In September, John announced makeup dates for the tour, which was postponed due to the pandemic. The rescheduled trek runs from January through April. The newly announced final dates include 30 stadium shows, with a run of performances in Europe from May to June before he heads to North America. Tickets to those dates sold out quickly but there are seats available through VividSeats.com .

Two Auckland, New Zealand, shows are also planned for January 27th and 28th, 2023, with the four-year tour concluding sometime in 2023 in Australia with a string of shows to be announced at a later date.

“Whether it’s next summer in Frankfurt or at the legendary Dodger Stadium for the grand finale in the United States, I can’t wait to see you all on the road one last time,” John added. “This has been an incredible tour so far, full of the most amazing highs, and I look forward to making more wonderful memories with you at these final shows. Concert review: a still potent Elton John says this is it in Atlanta - really!

ajc.com

Credit: CR: Rodney Ho/[email protected]. Elton John at his second-to-last Atlanta appearance at State Farm Arena November 1, 2019.

Originally posted Saturday, November 2, 2019 by RODNEY HO/[email protected]  on Melissa Ruggieri’s AJC Music Scene blog

Eleven months ago, esteemed part-time Atlantan Elton John made two appearances at State Farm Arena as part of a grandiose three-year worldwide farewell tour.

He maxed out sales as 25,000 people showed up over two nights, generating $3.3 million in concert revenue from eager fans who grew up with his massive stable of hits.

My colleague and music writer  Melissa Ruggier i wrote a rapturous review December 1, 2018 on the presumption these would be his final concerts ever in Atlanta:

Hearing his voice waver slightly toward the end of Friday's epic performance at State Farm Arena as he said while seated at his piano, 'I will miss you all so much, but I've had enough applause for a million, million years,' even the toughest cynic would recognize the truthfulness in his intention.

But his promoters were well aware there was still pent-up demand in Atlanta. So in February, they announced two more dates at State Farm this weekend for another 25,000 people to scoop up. And they did.

Ruggieri was out of town so she asked me to check out the show. Normally, the AJC doesn’t go back and review the second leg of a concert if they return to town. But John is a special case.

Besides his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame credentials and the massive success of the recent biopic “Rocketman,” he has lived part time in Atlanta since 1991, owning a penthouse in Buckhead.

During the 1990s, John was a fixture in town, regularly visiting Star 94’s Steve & Vikki morning show, playing in charity tennis events for his AIDS foundation and checking out the latest CD releases at Tower Records every Tuesday. He isn’t in Atlanta quite as much anymore but his affection remains evident. On stage, he said more than once how much he loves the city and name dropped a few of his closest friends.

In fact, he noted before playing "Believe" that he founded  his AIDS foundation in Atlanta and is thrilled that the disease is no longer a death sentence but a manageable situation with proper medication. But the "horrible stigma" remains, he said, and he continues to fight that: "Eight or nine people died of AIDS last year in Atlanta. Nobody should be. Stop shaming the people who are frightened. Kicking them out and disowning them as family members. Show compassion and love. Love cures what ails our world." Indeed, his concert was all about love. Love for music, of course. Love for his bandmates, many who have worked with him going back to the 1970s. And love for his fans.

Creaky joints no longer enable him to jump around his piano with glee (as shown in archive video on the massive screen behind him during “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”). But after most songs, he’d stand up and open his arms out, absorbing the waves of love that came back his way.

John curated this farewell tour’s 25-song set list for maximum impact, leaning heavily on his 1970s classics. He played 14 of the 20 songs from his seminal “Elton John’s Greatest Hits” volumes 1 and 2.

He isn’t the type of man to mess with a winning formula. The three-hour show was virtually identical to what he played 11 months earlier in the same space. Earlier this year, he added a single song to the tour mix: his 1976 top 10 hit “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word.”

And the concert was also a testimony to one of the most successful songwriting duos in history this side of  Paul McCartney and John Lennon . All 25 songs were co-written with his friend  Bernie Taupin , who he gives full credit as his lyricist and muse. (John chose to omit several hits without Taupin including "Little Jeannie," "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "Blue Eyes.")

And John inserted a few specific non hits such as “All the Girls Love Alice” and “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding”  that highlight his incredible musicianship on the piano, an extension of his being. Some of the best moments came during extended instrumental interludes on “Levon” and “Rocket Man,” where John’s ethereal piano play evoked a feeling of floating in space.

John can still sing with all-out passion, resolve and full-throated timbre. He made only minor concessions to vocal wear, including skipping some high notes on “Rocket Man.” Fashionwise, he stuck with three signature outfits, all packed with standard sparkly regalia, ending in an over-sized robe. Sir Elton indeed.

ajc.com

It’s still hard to believe he’s ready for retirement.

Bt near the end of the show, he received his only boos of the night when he said Saturday night’s State Farm concert would be his final show ever in Atlanta. “Ten years ago, I didn’t have a family of my own,” he said. “I need to be with them. I’ve had enough applause for a thousand lifetimes.” (Yes, that’s an echo of what he said a year ago.)

He and his husband  David Furnish have two young sons via surrogate, and his primary residence is now Windsor, England. At age 72, he wants to maximize raising a family in a way he was not raised himself by his mum.

After John sang the final notes of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” people on the floor rushed to the front of the stage to take photos and wave farewell as he doffed his robe, stepped on a platform, rose 20 feet up and exited from a door on the video screen, sort of like Truman in “The Truman Show.” A grand exit for a grand man.

Goodbye, Yellow Brick Abode: Elton John Lists His Incredible Atlanta Condo for $4.9M

Music superstar Elton John is ready to part ways with his massive Atlanta condo. He recently put the 13,332-square-foot pad on the market for $4,995,000.

It’s the first time the primo property has been available in more than 20 years.

Calling this apartment spacious would be an understatement—it has more room than most detached houses. The impressive four-bedroom, seven-bathroom space combines not one, not two, but six separate units.

Sky-high living

The sprawling, two-story condo soars above it all on the 36th floor. It features a bilevel dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows and gleaming wood floors.

Various seating areas are scattered throughout the main level. Some boast coffered ceilings and private balconies, while others feature built-in shelving and carved pillars.

The common denominator? Each space has breathtaking views of the midtown, downtown, and the  Buckhead skyline. So there’s always a perfect spot to take in sunrises and sunsets.

The bright kitchen comes complete with stainless steel appliances and plenty of storage. There’s also a separate smaller dining area nearby.

The home’s crowning focal point is its two-story grand salon with towering windows. If you want a home that can accommodate elaborate parties and social gatherings, this is the one.

Picture-perfect details

But wait, there’s lots more. The striking primary suite is designed with a swanky seating area and an expansive walk-in closet. And the spa-inspired en suite bathroom showcases eye-catching onyx details, mirrored walls, and a chandelier. How fabulous!

The home also has three large guest suites.

Have it all

Besides being meticulously designed and incredibly spacious, this condo is teeming with amenities.

It has a home office, fitness studio, nine reserved parking spaces, and six private storage units. A spa, massage room, and five dedicated wine-storage spaces round out the luxury offerings.

John, 76, burst onto the scene in the 1960s. He released his first hit single “Your Song” in 1970. Since then, the hitmaker has won five Grammys and embarked on numerous world tours, including a final farewell tour. In July, he performed what was billed as his last show.

The listing is held by Chase Mizell of Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty.

Elton John’s net wealth

Best known for his bedazzled glasses and hits such as Your Song, the British icon racked up millions in 2023 thanks to his headline set at Glastonbury and his five-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which wrapped up last year.

The worldwide musical excursion was said to be the performer’s last ever string of concerts and sold 6m tickets, grossing $939m (£786m). Surpassed only by Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

How did Sir Elton make his money?

Looking at filings from Companies House, the Sunday Times said John made a whopping £20m in 2023. The majority of this cash was said to be from music ventures.

The 77-year-old composed the music for the stage performance of The Devil Wears Prada, which opens in the West End in October.

Sir Elton John also hosts the Apple Music show Rocket Hour and sells a range of dazzling spectacles through his Elton John eyewear brand.

In 2019, the father of two collaborated on Rocketman, the box office hit which details his rise to fame and overcoming his addiction with drugs and alcohol.

John and his husband, David Furnish, also made headlines earlier this week when they announced a new exhibition of photographs at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

The display includes more than 300 pieces by 140 photographers selected from the vast collection of the pair.

Sir Elton John began collecting photographs after getting sober in the 1990s.  Tickets for the event which opens this Saturday cost £20 and feature snaps of everything from Marilyn Monroe to harrowing photography from the tragic 9/11 attack.

‘WCLK at 50’ puts Lil John Roberts in the spotlight. Here’s why the drummer is an Atlanta music icon

This year, Clark Atlanta University’s radio station, WCLK Jazz 91.9 FM, is celebrating its golden 50th anniversary. On May 24 at Symphony Hall, the Atlanta Jazz Festival presents  WCLK At 50 featuring Lil John Roberts with an Atlanta All-Star Band  — and such an occasion doesn’t merit the usual “one-two.”

The event is co-produced by Roberts and WCLK hosts Jamal Ahmad and Ray Cornelius, and  WCLK At 50 ‘s 90-minute set list will span from the 1930s and the classic jazz era (“Maiden Voyage” written by Herbie Hancock, “Take 5” by Dave Brubeck) through today.

Musicians accompanying Roberts include Phil Davis, Miguel Gaetán, Melvin “I Am Khemestry” Fowler and Saunders Sermons, with guest performers include Kathleen Bertrand, Rhonda Thomas, Julie Dexter, Tony Hightower and Alexandra Jackson, as well as  The Moth’s  Jon Goode as narrator.

elton john tour atlanta

Roberts may not be a household name, but this “musician’s musician” has played with Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Prince, Elton John, Janet Jackson and many more. He was born and raised in West Philadelphia, but let us count the ways Lil John Roberts has made Atlanta proud over the years.

Drumroll, please …

Here’s a look at Roberts’ remarkable career as a writer, producer, professor and, primarily a drummer, by the numbers:

Not only was this East Point resident born and raised in the same West Philadelphia ZIP code the Fresh Prince rapped about in his sitcom’s theme song, he actually played with Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (now better known as Will Smith)  on the 1994 American Music Awards . Like Smith, Roberts attended Overbrook High School, and remembers when the future Grammy Award and Oscar winner would come back to school, “driving around in his Trans Am [sports car].”

April 10, 1974

WCLK Jazz 91.9 FM began broadcasting from Clark Atlanta University. Decades would pass before listeners would hear Roberts on the dial. (But we’re getting ahead of ourselves, here.)

As Roberts remembers it, one night when he was playing at the then-Cheshire Bridge Road lounge (Diamonds and Pearls) carved out from the renowned, strip mall-engulfing 112, “I met two people who had an incredible impact on my life — Jason Orr and Ken Batie.” Orr may be best known as the founder of the one-stop arts festival FunkJazz Kafe, while Batie was the co-host of popular WCLK show “Hot Ice.” It was Batie who welcomed Roberts onto the airwaves, while the traveling musician became a friend and frequent occupant of Orr’s couch.

91.9

“What I love about CLK is not just the love they showed me, early on, but when I first heard it, it just sounded free. It felt like Philly, It was like, welcoming me here.”

64 Third St .

In the mid to late ’90s, the squat venue there behind the Varsity was the center of Atlanta’s live R&B, hip-hop, soul, spoken word and funk scene. Yin Yang Cafe welcomed Erykah Badu when she made debut and served as the honing ground for local favorites India Arie, Donnie and Joi. Lil John & The Chronicle was the house band for much of it.

Sixteen-years-old

When you’re that age performing with Christian McBride and Joey DeFrancesco as part of Wynton Marsalis’s Duke Ellington Orchestra, yes, Roberts was understandably touted as a child prodigy. He received a full scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts in 1991, In 2021, John was hired as a professor there.

Top 3 reasons he moved here (and has stayed)”

“First, the culture,” said Roberts. “Blacks always seemed to be doing well here…It also really felt like it supported being entrepreneurial. There’s a lot of creative and innovative people who’ve made it from the ground up.”

“And to be honest, this city has some beautiful woman. There are some fine women in Atlanta. I remember when I first  got here, feeling like every where I looked there was a pretty Black woman. And I had been everywhere — east coast, west coast. Nothing like Atlanta.”

Two decades

That’s how long he accompanied pop superstar, Janet Jackson; on the Janet Tour, Velvet Rope Tour, Rock Witchu Tour, Unbreakable World Tour and her State of the World Tour.  (And he was barely two decades old — 23 — when that started.)

elton john tour atlanta

That one time he and Atlanta rapper Lil Jon were at State Farm Arena together

“It was so funny, we were at the Dave Chappelle show,” Roberts said. “And on the sign they had it spelled like mine, not his.” (For clarity, Lil Jon is short for Jonathan Smith, his given name. John Roberts has been called Lil Jon since he was a kid, because he is a junior.)

“So I’m pretty sure I was called Lil John first,” Roberts laughed. “I don’t even introduce myself as that…When you hit 50 you shouldn’t be ‘Lil’ anything. Just ‘John’ is good.”

With a professional resume like his, great fairly qualifies, too.
