Yeah Yeah Yeahs Return With Towering New Song, ‘Spitting Off the Edge of the World’

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Some nine years after the release of their last album, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are back with a killer new song, “Spitting Off the Edge of the World” and a new album, “Cool It Down,” due Sept. 30 on Secretly Canadian. The group begins a set of European and Australian tour dates next month, moving over to North America later in the summer.

The new song, a slow and majestic collaboration with Perfume Genius (a.k.a Mike Hadreas), features his distinctive vocals and keyboards but also plays to the band’s strengths, with Chase delivering his powerhouse drumming, Zinner’s towering guitars and O’s unmistakable vocals. It recalls the group’s electronic-based 2009 album, “It’s Blitz!,” more than their rockier 2013 album “Mosquito,” and is produced by the group’s longtime producer, TV on the Radio vet Dave Sitek.

The members — singer Karen O, guitarist Nick Zinner and drummer Brian Chase — all worked on solo projects, this is a full-scale return. During an i nterview for Lux Prima , her dazzling 2019 project with Danger Mouse , Karen O revealed that the group had not only completed its contractual obligations to its former label, Interscope, but was “alive and well” and still “best friends,” and noted that when they next worked together it would be truly in a pressure-free “spirit of collaboration.”

Popular on Variety

According to the announcement, the song lyric’s lyrics reflect on the desperate state of the Earth’s environment.  Karen explains, “I see the younger generations staring down this threat, and they’re standing on the edge of a precipice, confronting what’s coming with anger and defiance,” she says. “It’s galvanizing, and there’s hope there.” It is accompanied by a video directed by longtime collaborator, Cody Critcheloe (aka Ssion).

Of the album, Karen says, “To all who have waited, our dear fans, thank you, our fever to tell has returned, and writing these songs came with its fair share of chills, tears, and euphoria when the pain lifts and truth is revealed. Don’t have to tell you how much we’ve been going through in the last nine years since our last record, because you’ve been going through it too, and we love you and we see you, and we hope you feel the feels from the music we’ve made. No shying away from the feels, or backing down from what’s been gripping all of us these days. So yes we’ve taken our time, happy to report when it’s ready it really does just flow out.

“The record is called ‘Cool It Down’ which is snagged from a lesser known Velvet Underground Song,” she continues. “I told Alex Prager whose photo graces our record cover that her image speaks to sweeping themes in the music and sums up how I, Karen, feel existentially in these times! But there’s always more to the story. This is how our new story begins, we present to you with heads bowed and fists in the air ‘Spitting Off the Edge of the World’ featuring Perfume Genius.

“A note on this video,” she concludes. “It’s a dream collaboration with one of our favorite artists of the 21st century Cody Critcheloe who did the artwork for our first record back in 2003 and has been making visionary music videos for the last decade. The time to collaborate again came with ‘Spitting,’ the shoot in Kansas City was dream-like, the dreams you have after eating something really greasy right before bed; bizarre, poetic, and intense. Perfume Genius was incredibly gracious to roll in the very cold mud as my co pilot and steal scene after scene with his surreal charm. We trusted Cody implicitly, he surpassed expectations and gave us our November Rain. YYY’s spirit is alive and well through the eyes of Cody Critcheloe. Custom Yeahs limo was largely his handiwork, fueled on love.”

'You have to run toward what you're afraid of' - Yeah Yeah Yeahs discuss their new album

Sose Fuamoli and Tim Shiel

yeah yeah yeahs australian tour 2022

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Nine years on from their last studio release, Yeah Yeah Yeahs re-emerged into a completely different world than that record -  Mosquito  - was born into.

Against a backdrop of life's myriad ups and downs; the band's fifth album Cool It Down  was made.

Not strictly a concept or message-driven record, the album marks a significant moment of reflection and meditation - through a quintessential Yeah Yeah Yeahs lens.

Lead single 'Spitting Off The Edge Of The World', the band's collaboration with Perfume Genius that signalled Yeah Yeah Yeahs' long-awaited return , is perhaps one of Cool It Down's  most direct observations on the bleakness of the world's current state of play.

“I see the younger generations staring down this threat, and they’re standing on the edge of a precipice, confronting what’s coming with anger and defiance,” songwriter Karen O said of the track upon its initial release.

Partly inspired by the current global crisis, the song mixes emotions of defeat and resignation with the vibrancy of crashing guitars and drums - offering a glimmer of optimism.

“It’s galvanising, and there’s hope there.”

This is a feeling that threads its way throughout  Cool It Down : across its eight tracks, Yeah Yeah Yeahs remain self-aware and it shines in the music. They're not the same band that helped create the blueprint for indie music, as documented in the book (and recent film ) Meet Me In The Bathroom .

Moments of contentment and brightness balance the restlessness fans of Yeah Yeah Yeahs know and love. The essence remains, but the sound Yeah Yeah Yeahs produce on Cool It Down  is evolved into something fitting for the group now.

Speaking with Tim Shiel on Arvos, Karen reflects on the lyrical and thematic depth of Cool It Down.  More specifically, the type of place she was in when she was writing this new music.

Hear Tim Shiel's conversation with Yeah Yeah Yeahs above.

"I think that everybody I know is hyper-aware of being at a tenuous pivotal moment for humanity and the world." she said.

"Especially as a parent; a lot of parents of kids out there, I think, are feeling exacerbated because we're thinking about the world that our kids are - not just in the far future, but in the near future - going to inherit."

"There was no setting out to make a record that was going to be related to this or music with a message in any way, but I think we're all incredibly overwhelmed with what's happening around us."

"Environmental stuff like the wildfires, flooding, droughts...things feel like they're happening very fast. With this record, even when it feels that the odds are impossibly stacked against you and you feel very lost, there are seeds of hope, even against [those] impossible odds."

The need to remain connected and present is a theme that is crucial to  Cool It Down  and perhaps the ethos Yeah Yeah Yeahs have employed - in and outside the band - in recent years.

Their return to touring and with it, the spotlight, after so long away has meant that Yeah Yeah Yeahs are now in the position to reconnect with old fans and engage with new ones alike. It's an opportunity that isn't lost on them.

Only months ago, pandemic-related touring issues forced the group to cancel their Australian tour - a run that would have had them headline Splendour In The Grass and perform a select run of arena shows.

As both Karen and guitarist Nick Zinner tell Tim, the decision brought with it a jarring reality check for the band.

"It was quite depressing," Karen admitted.

"The way the climate of touring is...it is what it is. Until it hit us, we hadn't been put in that position a lot of other artists had unfortunately been in; we got nailed by pandemic touring! We've cancelled few shows in our entire career, we haven't had that feeling for a very long time."

Adds Zinner, while conditions for artists in general are at a particular apex of difficulty, the transparency with which more of them are starting to become with their fans is a good thing.

"On one hand, artists have been dealing with these challenges forever. They just haven't been speaking about it. On the other hand, things have gotten so, so out of control for probably 95% of artists and bands in the last few years. It's really heartbreaking to see." he said.

"The more that people can be transparent about it, the better it is for fans to understand what we're all going through. It's just so hard to make it through now. At the same time, I think people are able to understand and relate to what the artists are going through, because everyone is going through something as well."

While there haven't been any new Australian dates announced, both Karen and Nick are anticipating finally being able to return to Australia "healthy and happy" soon.

In the meantime,  Cool It Down  will see Yeah Yeah Yeahs re-engaging with live shows on stages that have been missing them for a long time. As with the album, there's a sense of reinvigoration that has come from the band's return to this space - a boldness that Karen says has been essential to the creation of  Cool It Down .

"You kind of have to run towards what you're afraid of, with the compassion that ....that there's a deeper connection that everyone knows exists."

"It has with connecting with the world around us; not just us as humans, but nature around us, so we know that we're not as alone as we think we might be in this crisis. That way, we can overcome it."

Legendary trio Yeah Yeah Yeahs, makers of iconic indie hits like Heads Will Roll, Date with the Night, Maps, Sacrilege, and recent tune Burning, are ready to make their long-awaited Australian comeback. With huge shows in Melbourne and Sydney, you won’t want to miss the band’s epic live performance on stage.

This news comes off the back of the latest addition to their incredible canon, Cool it Down, their fifth studio album and first since 2013’s Mosquito. The eight-track collection, a landmark in their catalogue, is an expert distillation of their best gifts that impels you to move, and cry, and listen closely.

They never expected it to be so long between albums, and they certainly stayed busy. There was a tour for their 2003 debut album, Fever to Tell that was re-issued in 2017; Karen released an album with Danger Mouse (Lux Prima, 2019) and co-composed the score for the animated film Where Is Anne Frank?; Nick made an album with his hardcore side-project Head Wound City, scored films, and collaborated with artists including Phoebe Bridgers, Amen Dunes and Songhoy Blues; drummer Brian Chase started his own label Chaiken Records.  Karen and Brian both became parents in recent years.

With their sparkling hooks and high energy performances, Yeah Yeah Yeahs are front-runners for the title of best live band in the world. Be front and centre to experience the alchemy, the transformative magic that will happen when the Yeah Yeah Yeahs hit the stage.

I saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival in Camber Sands in 2006. At the time I didn’t know much of their music, but was interested in them enough to check them out. I’ve tried to see them again a couple of times since then, but tickets for their shows always seem to sell out really fast so I realised now how lucky I was to see them when I did! If I remember rightly, they actually curated that festival, and their choice of line-up was excellent too. Although the gig in question was several years ago now, I remember their performance was really tight and Karon O in particular has a very commanding stage presence and an incredible voice. There were no “gimmicks” in the show – no back-projected films or glitter balls or confetti, or any of that stuff – just the band, standing up there, doing their thing. And they do it very, very well indeed. Even as someone who was not particularly familiar with their songs, I thoroughly enjoyed their set, and although I wouldn’t describe myself as a big fan, I’d definitely love to see them again, and have bought all 4 albums they have released to date.

So if you’re thinking about going to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, don’t hold back. Go and see them the first chance you get!

I've always enjoyed a little bit of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but till I saw them live; I don't believe I knew the true meaning of falling in love with a band, or the true extent of my capacity to have a full on lady-crush. Karen O's stage presence is beyond electric, and she commands deep respect and awe the moment she steps on to the stage. The set they played was very carefully crafted, and they took the crowd through the classics dotted with a couple of the more recent tracks very subtly weaved in, so as to make sure the beat was always up, and the crowd was buzzing. Everyone went wild for most songs anyway, which for someone like myself (who was well acquainted with their older stuff but not so much their newer work) was a definite positive. Yeah Yeah Yeah's are a truly amazing and inspirational band, and I can't wait to see them live again soon... this time though, I will know every lyric to every track and I will belt along with the rest of their super-fans!

Every howl, yelp, screech was delivered perfectly and flawlessly by Karen O.

Perfect show, they played all their classic songs, and it sounded just like the albums. Plus the band kept playing from one song to the next without stopping. Everything about this show was pure raw energy and awesomeness.

Definitely would recommend and I am definitely going again.

Absolutely fantastic. I travelled from Denver to see them. Great venue. Great setlist and order. Awesome finale. The huge confetti guns were out of this world. Love you Karen. Keep rocking. Can't wait for the next tour. Come to Denver and play Red Rocks.

Breaking down Caitlin Clark's chances to make Team USA's roster for 2024 Olympics in Paris

Will clark be the first rookie to play on the u.s. olympic squad since breanna stewart.

untitled-design-2024-04-26t134957-433.png

It was quite an April for Caitlin Clark. The Iowa Hawkeyes returned to NCAA championship game, and the Indiana Fever selected her with the top pick in the WNBA Draft -- as both events notched record-setting viewership numbers. And then there's that reported $28 million shoe deal from Nike . Yeah, not a bad April.

The next big question for Clark is how she'll fare as she makes the jump to the pros. She joins an Indiana team that hasn't made the playoffs since 2016, but boasts reigning Rookie of the Year Aliyah Boston and an upswing as the Fever won more games in 2023 than it did in 2021 and 2022 combined. Everything is trending in the right direction in Indianapolis ahead of training camp, which gets underway on April 28.

Whether Clark can turn the Fever into a playoff team as a rookie is not the only big question on the horizon for her. A few weeks before draft night, USA Basketball invited her to the women's national team training camp in Cleveland. The only collegiate player in the group, Clark was ultimately unable to participate because she led Iowa to the Final Four that weekend, but the fact that she was already in the mix with Team USA spoke volumes.

Can she become the first American player to make the Olympic roster fresh off a collegiate season since Breanna Stewart in 2016? Let's take a closer look at the situation.

How does Clark feel about the Olympics?

It should come ast little surprise that Clark is eager to play in Paris .

"USA Basketball, that's your dream," Clark said during a press conference during March Madness . "You always want to grow up and be on the Olympic team. Lucky for me I have the opportunity to possibly not doing that because I want to be at the Final Four playing basketball with my team. But if not, that's where I'll be. People that are on that roster are people that I idolize and have idolized growing up. So just to be extended a camp invite is something you have to be proud of and celebrate and enjoy.

She echoed those thoughts during her introductory press conference with the Fever on April 17, while noting the challenge that lies ahead.

"I would love to be on the Olympic team and Paris in 2024, but that's not up to me," Clark said. "That's a dream. ... You grow up watching the Summer Olympics. ... I want to be on that team, I want to be an Olympic medalist one day. It'd really just be a dream come true. Everybody knows how competitive women's basketball is in our country, so it'll be hard for really anybody to make that team."

That part, then, is settled.

The competition

USA Basketball's women's national team just might be the hardest basketball team to make in the world. The Americans boast the best collection of talent and have won seven consecutive Olympic gold medals and four consecutive FIBA World Cups. In fact, they haven't even lost a game at a major international tournament since the semifinals of the 2006 FIBA World Cup, when they fell to Russia.

Some All-WNBA-level players have found it so difficult to break into the group in years past that they decided to represent other countries on the international level. Notable names among them include Becky Hammon (Russia), Courtney Vandersloot (Hungary) and Tiffany Hayes (Azerbaijan). Clark won't need to take that route, but it goes to show how stiff the competition is for the 12 spots on the Olympic roster.

Here are the six guards that made the cut for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021:

  • Ariel Atkins, Washington Mystics
  • Sue Bird, retired
  • Skylar Diggins-Smith, Seattle Storm
  • Chelsea Gray, Las Vegas Aces
  • Jewell Loyd, Seattle Storm
  • Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury

Two additional rising stars went to the World Cup in Australia in 2022:

  • Sabrina Ionescu, New York Liberty
  • Kelsey Plum, Las Vegas Aces

And another two were on the roster for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament earlier this year:

  • Rhyne Howard, Atlanta Dream
  • Jackie Young, Las Vegas Aces

Bird is now retired, but that still leaves nine guards with recent senior national team experience, plus Clark, for a likely six spots on the plane to Paris.

  • Taurasi: USAB usually leans towards experience with roster decisions, and given Taurasi's previous accomplishments she should be considered a lock if she wants to play.
  • Loyd: The Storm star won the scoring title last season and has been with the team for the last two World Cups and the most recent Olympics, so she is almost certain to be involved.
  • Gray: The 2022 Finals MVP has established herself as one of the best point guards in the world and was a starter on the gold medal team at the 2022 World Cup. It's hard to see Cheryl Reeve leaving her at home.

More likely than not

  • Diggins-Smith: On pure talent, Diggins-Smith would be a lock, but she didn't make her major tournament debut until the Tokyo Games and barely played in that tournament, which does raise some eyebrows. She was also not at the training camp earlier this month. Still, if she's interested she'll likely be on the team.
  • Atkins: While Atkins may not be as big of a name as some of these other players, she's been a staple of the program for this last cycle and is the best defender in the bunch. It's also worth noting that Mystics GM Mike Thibault is part of Team USA's coaching staff, which gives her a leg up.

The final spot

  • Clark: There are no questions about Clark's talent, but whether or not she's included may come down to how she adjusts to the profesional level over the next few months.
  • Howard: The 2022 Rookie of the Year has had an impressive start to her career, but it's hard to see her making the team this time around.
  • Ionescu: Last summer, Ionescu established herself as the best shooter in the WNBA, which is her clear path to making this team.
  • Plum: One of the best combo guards around, Plum was on the last two World Cup teams and won gold at the Tokyo Games on the 3x3 team.
  • Young: The Aces star is the most versatile player in this group, and that's a valuable trait in international play. Like Plum, she also put her time in with the 3x3 team in Tokyo.

USA Basketball has until July 7, nearly two months into the 2024 WNBA season, to send a final roster to the International Olympic Committee, though the team could be announced before then. Team USA is scheduled to have another training camp in Phoenix as part of WNBA All-Star Weekend from July 18-20. This year's All-Star Game will feature Team USA versus Team WNBA.

As per usual, the WNBA will take a mid-season break during the Olympics, and games will be paused from July 18-Aug. 14.

A business decision?

USA Basketball is not a business that has to worry about cost and revenue, but it still could make a business decision to include Clark on the Olympic roster.

Team USA's dominance on the global stage has become routine at this point, and bringing the biggest star in women's basketball to Paris would generate significantly more interest than usual in their quest for another gold medal. That, in turn, would drive television ratings, jersey sales and advertisement dollars.

United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee CEO Sarah Hirshland told reporters earlier this month that Clark will need to earn her spot. "One of our goals and clear areas of focus is fairness," Hirshland said. "It's the single most important thing to athletes. We ask them questions and survey -- a level playing field and fairness is at the top every time."

Unless Clark is a complete disaster over the first few months of her WNBA career, she's going to have just as much of an on-court case as anyone else in the guard group. And if they're going to be splitting hairs anyway, it's easy to see why USAB would pick the player that is a bigger draw and the future face of the sport. It's also worth noting that Team USA is sponsored by Nike, and Clark is reportedly set to join the Nike family herself. That connection doesn't guarantee anything, but it can only help Clark's odds.

"You always want to introduce new players into the pool whether it's for now or the future," USAB selection committee chair Jennifer Rizzotti told the Associated Press . "We stick to our principles of talent, obviously, positional fit, loyalty and experience. It's got to be a combination of an entire body of work. It's still not going to be fair to some people."

History on the line

If Clark ends up making the final roster, she would be the first WNBA rookie to play for Team USA at the Olympics since Breanna Stewart in 2016, and just the fifth to do so since the WNBA came into existence in 1997.

It's worth noting that Stewart actually made the 2014 World Cup team when she was still in college, so she had previous senior national team experience prior to the 2016 Olympics. The other players in this group, however, made their major tournament debut in the Olympics, so there is historical precedent for the leap Clark is trying to make.

WNBA rookies to play in the Olympics:

  • Diana Taurasi, 2000
  • Sylvia Fowles, 2008
  • Candace Parker, 2008
  • Breanna Stewart, 2016

"It's where I want to be," Clark said. "Three-on-three is really cool, I've just never done it. But five-on-five is the goal and the dream. To play with the best in the world and against the best in the world, you can't script it better than that."

Olympic champion surfer Carissa Moore: "I’m not ready to pass on the baton just yet"

Carissa Moore, 2024 Team USA Media Summit

As one of the greatest female surfers of all time, five-time world champion Carissa Moore shocked the world when she announced that she was taking a step back from the WSL Championship Tour (CT) earlier this year.

“I’m excited to see what else is out there, outside the jersey,” she told the New York Times as the news broke.

Olympics.com caught up with Moore in New York, four months after she announced her decision, to speak about what life has been like since she hung up that jersey for the time being.

Since 2010, the Hawaiian has spent up to nine months out of every year traveling and competing around the world, flying from Portugal to Australia to Brazil, to Tahiti, Fiji, South Africa, Hawaii and more, to go head-to-head against the world’s best.

Now, and for the first time in 15 years, she is waking up, smelling the flowers (literally), and choosing what her day looks like.

She hasn't gone far from the ocean, though, as she plans to defend her title at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and preparations for that are also in full swing.

“I’m not ready to pass on the baton just yet,” Moore told Olympics.com.

Olympic champion Carissa Moore to step away from competitive surfing after Paris 2024

How to qualify for surfing at Paris 2024

Carissa Moore, 2022 Oi Rio Pro - Brazil

Five-time WSL Champion Carissa Moore of Hawaii surfs during the semfinal of the Oi Rio Pro 2022 at Itauna Beach on June 28, 2022 in Saquarema, Brazil.

Carissa Moore on life since stepping back from the Tour

Since her announcement to take a step back from the tour, Moore has published a book, she’s working on a documentary project, and even took a trip to Japan… without any surfboards.

But, according to the Olympic champion, it’s the “simple” things that she’s enjoying the most.

“Regardless of whether I'm prepping for a competition or putting a jersey on or not, I'm finding some way to get in the water. It just makes me happy,” she said.

“And I like hot yoga. I like spending time with my family, my friends. I like walking. I've been trying to make more time just to walk the dogs with my husband every evening, and right now it's springtime in Hawaii, so all of the flowers are blooming. It smells so saturated. Yeah, that's a must every day.”

But, with Paris 2024 right around the corner, Moore has some Olympic-level training to sprinkle into her schedule.

For the surfers, this year’s Games will be held on the infamous wave called Teahupo’o , also known as ‘The End of the Road’.

The reef break in Tahiti is one of the heaviest and biggest waves that the surfers face on Tour and will likely be substantially larger than what they saw at Tsurigasaki Beach, where surfing at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 went down.

“People have had big falls and big injuries,” Moore said, talking about the wave.

“It makes that fear factor even greater, but you could also get the thrill of your life.”

Ahead of the kick-off of the Games this summer, she plans to spend as much time training there as possible and recently returned from a trip there in March.

“My goal is to try to spend more time being uncomfortable at that wave and surfing all types of conditions.”

Carissa Moore, WSL Tahiti Pro 2023

Carissa Moore floats on her board at the WSL Tahiti Pro event on August 15, 2023 in Teahupo'o, French Polynesia, where the Olympic Games Paris 2024 will hold the surfing competition.

Carissa Moore’s legacy

Moore has seen a lot through her 14 years as a professional surfer, and although she is not quite finished, she is leaving plenty for the athletes that follow.

The first season that men and women received equal prize money for their Championship Tour wins came in 2019, and three years later, after 58 years of the Tour, both men’s and women’s competitions became fully integrated, meaning they would compete on the same waves at the same events, for every stop along the way.

“There have been a handful of women who have been there fighting that for us… I feel very fortunate to have reaped the benefits of that,” she said.

Teahupo’o was deemed ‘too dangerous’ for the women and taken off of their Tour docket in 2006, but “it should have been there all along,” Moore argued.

“If you give us the conditions, we will rise to the occasion.”

Time and time again, the Hawaiian trailblazer has risen to the occasion and broken barriers for the women that follow in her wake.

With her foundation, Moore Aloha , she will continue to work to inspire young girls inside and outside her sport for years to come.

When asked what advice she has for younger athletes, she humbly responded: “be kind to yourself and don't be afraid to fail.

"I think if I look at [myself at a] younger age, she put a lot of pressure on herself to do things right and be perfect. But there's no such thing as perfect. And we learn the most from our failures; from the times that we fall down and we get back up. I just embrace the journey and have fun.

"It's supposed to be fun; have a lot of fun. We do our best and perform our best when we're having fun.”
