TSA airport screenings hit an all-time high

If you were looking for a sign of weakness in the U.S. economy, you’re not going to find it at the airport.

The Transportation Security Administration reported this week that it screened a record 2.99 million passengers on Sunday — a new high that may not last long.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever and summer travel usually peaks over the Independence Day holiday,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement.

Pekoske added: “The traveling public is on the move, which is a sign of a healthy economy. We are ready, along with our airline and airport partners, to handle this boost in passenger volumes.”

The previous record was set last year on Nov. 25, the day after Thanksgiving.

Airlines for America, a trade group representing major U.S. airlines, has also forecast record summer travel, with passenger counts expected to total 271 million passengers, up 6.3% from last year. Daily flight counts are also expected to climb 5.6%.

In a new presentation on the state of the industry, the group said the record passenger volumes continued to be driven by "post-pandemic YOLOism" — or "you only live once" spending impulses — along with a shift toward hybrid work that has enabled travelers to log-in while on the move.

Older consumers, who the group says have put greater emphasis on experiences like travel, have especially helped buoy passenger volumes, it added, noting that Americans aged 65 and older now constitute the greatest share of spending among all age groups.

Demand remains strongest for international travel, which has outpaced domestic travel each month of 2024 so far. The most popular destinations include Latin American countries, as well as Spain and Italy.

Meanwhile, the price of air travel continues to drop. In the first five months of 2024, fares dropped nearly 9% from the same time last year after adjusting for inflation — and are down 17% compared to the same period pre-pandemic in 2019 after adjusting for inflation.

The 20 best cities to live in the world, ranked in a 2024 report.

What are the best cities to live in the world? Every year, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) evaluates cities across the globe for their liveability, releasing the much-anticipated Global Liveability Index 2024 .

The EIU’s report examines 173 cities using 30 indicators divided into several categories, including stability, healthcare, culture, environment, education and infrastructure, then ranks them on a 100-point scale. The aim? To show how comfortable these cities are to live in.

The World’s Best City to Live

For the third consecutive year, Vienna, Austria—a place celebrated for its unmatched blend of cultural richness and essential public services—claims the title of the world’s best city to live.

“This year, Vienna once again got perfect scores (of 100) for four of the five categories, although its score for culture and environment was a less-perfect 93.5, owing to a lack of major sporting events,” Barsali Bhattacharyya, deputy industry director at EIU, told me in an interview.

Vienna has been named the world's best city to live for the third year in a row. Pictured here: St. ... [+] Charles Church "Karlskirche" Church.

Overall, Western Europe remains the world’s most liveable region with eight cities in the top 20. Coming in second on the list—also for the third year in a row—is Copenhagen, Denmark. Zurich, Switzerland ousted Melbourne, Australia to take the third place on the list in 2024 (a position it held in 2022). Compare these results to 2023 and 2022 .

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, global trends.

So what do the results say about global liveability? This year’s report reveals a positive trend, primarily driven by significant improvements in healthcare and education in developing nations. However, these gains are somewhat offset by declining scores in several top-tier cities. Geopolitical risks also had an impact on the overall index.

“Global liveability has risen fractionally over the past year but risks to stability remain,” says Bhattacharyya. “High inflation, accompanied by interest rates and other economic headwinds, has led to frequent protests worldwide.”

One surprise in this year’s results, according to Bhattacharyya: “Overall, cities across the developing world have significant strides in improving their liveability standards, while those in rich countries have seen a decline in scores.”

The Best Cities to Live in the U.S.

Again this year, the U.S. didn’t crack the list of top 20 best places to live—but it moved up, with Honolulu taking the top spot as the best U.S. city to live for the second year in a row. Honolulu ranked 23 on the overall list—a two point increase from 2023, when it was number 25 overall. Honolulu performed well due to its robust educational facilities. It also scored strongly on stability as compared to other U.S. cities.

One notable trend in the U.S. is that smaller cities tend to outperform the biggest metropolises. Besides Honolulu at the top, Pittsburgh (number 3), Boston (number 7) and Minneapolis (number 10) made the list of the top 10 places to move in the U.S. “The U.S.’s most populous cities, such as New York (70th) and Los Angeles (58th), have impressive scores for their cultural offerings, but weaker ratings for stability and infrastructure,” says Bhattacharyya.

Across North America, the scores dropped—and housing was a big reason, especially in Canada. Toronto dropped from the top 10 in 2023 to the 12th position for 2024. “The main reason for the decline in North America’s scores in this year’s index is a lower infrastructure score for Canada on account of low housing supply,” says Bhattacharyya. “As in some other advanced economies, Canadian house price growth accelerated markedly during the pandemic, when mortgages were quite cheap. The combination of low housing supply and strong population growth, further driven by high levels of immigration, has led to record-low vacancy rates.”

There were several issues at play in the U.S. “Cities in the U.S. face a few well-established structural problems that affect their scores in our index,” says Bhattacharyya. “Foremost among these is a greater incidence of social unrest, which is often rooted in racial inequalities. Moreover, weak gun-control laws mean that crime is often violent and fatal and undermines social cohesion.”

The Biggest Changes

Despite dominating the top 20 with eight cities on the list, Europe faces challenges, recording the largest overall decline due to deteriorating stability scores. A surge in protests across Western Europe—spanning issues from far-right extremism to EU agricultural policies—reflects underlying societal tensions that could threaten future stability.

The biggest leap up the ranks globally was made by Hong Kong, which saw improvements in its score for stability. Hong Kong has also registered improvement in its healthcare facilities over the years. “Although not quite back to its pre-2019 scores, Hong Kong’s political landscape has stabilized, with the risks of disruptions from mass protests now negligible,” says Bhattacharyya. “The national security law and the local regulations introduced earlier in 2024 have restored political stability.”

But there are some drawbacks in Hong Kong, according to Bhattacharyya. “This change in score reflects a huge tradeoff to Hong Kong’s civil society, as evidenced by the city’s plunging score in our separately published Democracy Index.”

Meanwhile, there are stark contrasts in the Middle East and North Africa region. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has significantly impacted Tel Aviv, which has plummeted by 20 places to rank 112th.

On the other hand, Gulf cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi have seen major improvements in their liveability scores. “This year, Dubai has joined Abu Dhabi in achieving the highest tier of liveability in our index (i.e. a score of 80 or above). Both cities score highly on stability, infrastructure and education and have seen steady improvements in overall ratings over the past few years,” says Bhattacharyya.

Saudi Arabia also performed well. “In the past few years, Saudi Arabian cities have seen strong investment in domestic infrastructure, education and health in order to become more attractive to foreign tourists and expatriates, and diversify their economies,” says Bhattacharyya. “These efforts have been rewarded with movements up the rankings.”

Read on for the rankings of the best cities to live around the world and in the United States.

The Briefing: Should last-16 teams fear Denmark?

If Hjulmand’s side play the way they did against England — then yes. But they’ve only drawn three games, with a clear lack of cutting edge — scoring twice and failing to really dominate the opposition for any sustained period of time.

Part of the issue is that their attacking strength in depth is relatively weak — there are relatively few ways for him to change the game if the initial set-up doesn’t work. The real battle in the last 16 will be whether Germany’s interchangeable attack can break down Denmark’s solid back five.

Denmark will not win a high-scoring game — but have enough threat from either set-pieces or a magical Eriksen moment to make life awkward. Read more below...

The Briefing: Stojkovic consistently got selection wrong

The Briefing: Stojkovic consistently got selection wrong

Dragan Stojkovic has not been a happy man during this tournament. He has tweaked his team for each match of this group phase and did so again versus Denmark. In total, he has made four half-time subs from three matches. Unfortunately for him, that is four times more than the number of goals his team has scored.

Serbia have lacked any real fluency and again, a talented group have underperformed. They will look back at this Euros with regret, particularly as they have still not progressed from the group phase of a major tournament.

For a generation of talent underpinned by under-20 World Cup winners in 2015, this is a disappointment. Click below for more...

The Briefing: Djokovic's recovery takes him to Munich

Jannik Sinner may be world No 1 and Carlos Alcaraz may have dethroned him at Roland Garros and Wimbledon — but Novak Djokovic is still the biggest star in men’s tennis.

Are there any other players who could make virtually an entire international football team stop their warm-up and watch his good luck message?

Djokovic was at Munich’s Allianz Arena to support his countrymen tonight, an impressive commute considering he has been training in London over recent days. The Serbian player is racing to regain fitness in time for Wimbledon after suffering a knee injury during the French Open last month.

The Briefing: Welcome to the worst group at Euro 2024

England have shouldered a fair bit of heat during this tournament for their slow football and underwhelming start. But they do not stand alone. Indeed, their comrades in Group C have all played their part. Welcome to the worst group at this year’s tournament.

Remarkably, after six competitive matches, there has only been one win in Group C — the fewest at this summer’s Euros. That win was England’s triumph over Serbia. Not only that, though. There have also only been seven goals. It is a dismal return.

In truth, there was probably no better way for this group to end than two goalless draws. Read more below...

The Briefing: What Denmark learned

The Briefing: What Denmark learned

Within this squad, there is no question that Rasmus Hojlund is both Denmark’s brightest attacking talent and their most compelling prospect.

That ignores the fact, however, that he is not quite ready to assume the amount of responsibility he does at the top of the pitch. Against Serbia, Hjulmand played Hojlund alongside Jonas Wind, a plan that defeated itself when Wind got himself booked in the first half and had to be withdrawn at the break.

From then on, Hojlund looked horribly isolated. He is still learning and his forward play will have to be broadened out in time, but Denmark already have a dynamic attacking player who they seem reluctant to use in the right way.

What is England’s route to Euro 2024 final?

It might be the last thing England fans will be thinking about after another poor performance, but their potential route to the Euro 2024 final has been mapped out here.

Group C at Euro 2024 has now been confirmed as the lowest-scoring completed group in the history of the European Championship.

Just the seven goals scored.

Group B in 1980, Group B in1984, Group A in 1992, and Group A in 2016 - the next worst - all reached nine goals.

Denmark 0 Serbia 0 – The Briefing

Denmark advanced to the knockout stage of Euro 2024 thanks to a 0-0 draw with Serbia in Munich. They finished second behind England, who drew with Slovenia in the other match in Group C.

They will now face the host Germany in the last 16 in Dortmund on Saturday. England, meanwhile, will play one of the third-placed teams from Group D, E or F. Slovenia finished third in the group and will advance to the knockouts as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Below, The Athletic 's Peter Rutzler, Seb Stafford-Bloor and Jacob Whitehead analyse the game in Munich…

Highlights might be short!

Response to the goalless draw might vary

Denmark did what they needed, so they judgement of them will be less harsh. Goodness, though: what an atrocious game of football.

The Serbian players have just come over to their fans to thank them for their support and.... well, let's say that they got quite a frosty reception.

Dragan Stojkovic is not altogether popular with the Serbian supporters and he does not deal particularly well with criticism.

The aftermath of this last-placed finish, with an extremely talented side, will likely not be pretty.

England 0 Slovenia 0 – The Briefing

England qualified for the knockout stage of the European Championship with a 0-0 draw against Slovenia that saw them top Group C.

Gareth Southgate’s team were underwhelming in their opening two games and there was little sign of a revolution in the first half on Tuesday evening.

England dominated possession but managed just two shots on target, and a Bukayo Saka goal that was disallowed for a Phil Foden offside. Ultimately a goalless display against the side ranked 57th in the world will not inspire much confidence as England head into the knockout rounds.

Below, The Athletic 's Danny Taylor, Oli Kay, Mark Carey, Dan Sheldon and Will Jeanes analyse the key moments from the game.

England 0 Slovenia 0: Southgate’s side seal top spot in Group C but underwhelm again – The Briefing

So what does this mean?

So what does this mean?

It's a very good question.

England finish as Group C winners.

Denmark finish second and also qualify automatically for the knockout stages.

Slovenia, who finish third, have also qualified as one of the best third-placed teams and are celebrating raucously on the pitch in Cologne.

Love that for them.

FULL TIME: Denmark 0-0 Serbia

FULL TIME: Denmark 0-0 Serbia

That's it!

Serbia are out after just one goal in three matches! Criminal, really, considering they have strikers in the class of Luka Jovic, Mitrovic and Vlahovic.

Foul to Denmark!

90+5' Denmark 0-0 Serbia

The Serbia fans behind the goal erupt with fury as the ref penalises auxiliary striker Strahinja Pavlovic for a foul inside the penalty area.

Schmeichel takes his time.

Joachim Andersen smashes it away...

Milinkovic-Savic scuffs it!

90+3' Denmark 0-0 Serbia

Is that the last chance?

Denmark look nervous, holding on to second spot as things stand, and the ball falls to sub Sergej Milinkovic-Savic kindly outside the box.

He can shoot, and does, first-time, right-footed... but the connection is not clean and Schmeichel can gather at the second attempt.

Then Dusan Tadic swings in a fine curling cross from the right... but no one gambles. Schmeichel catches it easily again.

Costco travel discounts and deals

The warehouse retailer's travel arm offers everyday savings on top-quality, brand-name vacations, hotels, cruises, and rental cars, exclusively for Costco members.

Teresita Nino has used Costco to book vacation packages and told ABC News how she saved on international deals.

"My last trip that we booked was to Saint Lucia and we ended up booking the airfare and the hotel -- I ended up saving about $700," Nino said of her experience using Costco. "Nine out of ten times is Costco Travel is always giving me a better deal overall than other travel companies."

Access to Costco's travel deals require a paid membership as an extra perk for customers.

"The travel savings are the cherry on top -- but it's not necessarily the most lucrative benefit," McGrath said. "In these membership programs, you have to take the value of membership as a whole rather than just joining to save on travel."

What Kylie Kelce Can’t Live Without

tm travel live

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like hair spray or an electric toothbrush . We asked autism activist and philanthropist Kylie Kelce, who has partnered with HP to introduce Print Pals, about the spacious belt bag , “top tier” mascara , and investment-worthy kids pajamas she can’t live without.

Covergirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara

I’ve been using this since high school when I started wearing makeup. I’m not a makeup-every-day person, but I have to have mascara. I will not wear any other brand. If I forget to pack it, I can just run into any local pharmacy, and it’s usually there. The orange tube is my tried and true because it gives me volume. One time in a pinch I had to get the green one, which was just fine. I’m not being mean about that one, but the orange is top-tier.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

I used to not be faithful to any one dry shampoo . Then I tried Living Proof. It goes on so lightly and doesn’t turn your hair that chalky white that a lot of other ones do. I was looking for all these tips and tricks on applying it, like spraying it in before bed so it’ll sort of sink in better. There was a whole laundry list of things I found, but I don’t need to do any of that with this. I just get up, spray it on my hair, and go. For someone like me who sometimes has approximately 45 seconds to get ready with kids standing by, this is the kind of support I need.

Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag

I used to always wear a lanyard with a little coin purse attached up until three or four years ago. Once I had kids, I realized I needed a bit more room, so I graduated to Lululemon’s belt bags. I test the limits of its capacity every day, but this goes unmatched. I have it in all different colors: mint green, a slightly larger one branded for the Eagles Autism Foundation , my standard black one, and one with the Lulu logo.

Zoe Chicco 14K Itty Bitty Multi Letter Station Necklace

This Zoe Chicco necklace was a gift from my husband, Jason, as a reminder of our three greatest creations. He got me the W when Wyatt was born, and I didn’t take it off for four years until I updated it with the other two kids’ initials. It’s something I wear every single day. It’s part of their Itty Bitty collection and has these tiny initials of our girls on it. I’m really into understated, dainty jewelry over big pieces.

Hanna Anderson Short John Pajama Set

We lucked out because we had three girls. We’re rotating through clothes we bought for our first daughter now to our youngest, so we have gone through a lot of hand-me-downs. Sometimes they’ll get stained or start to unravel at the edges because kids wear them a million times and you wash them a million times. The Hanna Anderson PJs last forever. We still have some packed up, just in case there ends up being a fourth. It is the best investment, and they have the best, best sales.

Barney Bed

I’ve wanted an Irish Wolfhound since I was itty bitty. We have one now that’s still with us that’s 180 pounds. He’s a big boy, and he requires a very large bed. The XXL version of this one can actually fit two Wolfhounds comfortably, which was a game changer. We could never find a dog bed that was that spacious. The covers on them are great, too. You just remove them like a bed sheet and wash them, and they’re super-durable.

Sonos Move 2

We have the Sonos system in our house and recently got the Move speaker. It’s nice to be able to pick it up and take it with me in rooms that don’t normally have speakers. I also like it over headphones, because I can still hear our kids. Personally, I like listening to early-’90s R&B and hip-hop when I’m on my own. Missy Elliot, Ludacris, all that good stuff that speaks to your soul. When I’m with my girls, I get vetoed. We see eye-to-eye on some Beyoncé and Taylor, though.

Dunkin Butter Pecan Iced Coffee

It’s common knowledge that I have an obsession with the butter-pecan iced coffee. This drink is unreal. When it went out of season, I was very sad. I told the girls I coach for high-school field hockey about it, and they mourned with me over the loss. Then last year, when they announced it was coming back, the first thing the girls said to me when I showed up to practice was, “It’s coming back for good!” That was the first thing out of their mouths. I was like, These are my girls. They’ve got me.

Wawa Mac & Cheese

It’s the best. I grew up on it. I think half of me is made of Wawa’s mac and cheese. One year for Lent, I gave it up because I was like, It’s getting a bit wrong how often I eat this.

HP Print Pals Printable Puppets

I connected with HP over this outstanding resource for the neurodivergent community. They’re easy-to-make, free, printable puppets. You just go HP’s site , and there are so many options for different eyes, mouths, and other features you can pick from. I love that it encourages communication, enthusiasm, and expression. It’s for all ages. I’ll admit, I’m participating myself. My family’s so excited to do this at our home this summer on days it’s too hot to have a beach day.

What to know about road closures, traffic for CNN Presidential debate, Copa America

Road closures by Georgia Tech for CNN Presidential Debate

The City of Atlanta is hosting two major events Thursday night with the CNN Presidential Debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump and Copa America match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Of course that means your Thursday commute will be significantly impacted.

Triple Team Traffic’s Mike Shields says there are several road closures in the area surrounding the debate in midtown.

Police have shut down 10th Street from State Street to Spring Street and Fowler Street shut down from 6th Street to 10th Street. The closures will be in place until after the debate and the candidates leave the CNN campus at Techwood.

Shields says there will also be rolling closures on Interstate 75/Interstate 85 when the candidates arrive Thursday afternoon.

While there are not any road closures in place near Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta police are urging anyone going to the U.S-Panama match to take MARTA or give themselves extra time to arrive downtown.

We’re LIVE with a look at the street closures and guiding you around them, on Channel 2 Action News.
