FIFA 19 The Journey 3 Champions rewards: what do you get for finishing each chapter?

Read on for a full walkthrough and guide to all Ultimate Team bonuses from FIFA 19 The Journey

danny the journey

The Journey was first introduced to the franchise a few years ago, and now we've reached the conclusion with FIFA 19 The Journey. The final parts to our three protagonists' stories come to a close in FIFA 19 , and during it you can earn some fantastic rewards for use in Ultimate Team. We've got all the FIFA 19 The Journey rewards here.

The Journey: Champions is split into four chapters, and below I’ll guide you through what happens in each, and what you earn for completing them. Note that the storyline varies dependent on decisions and results from both previous games and this one, so your playthrough may deviate slightly from mine. Whatever path you take, all Ultimate Team rewards are identical.

Many, many spoilers ahead, obviously.

Chapter 1: Alex, Kim & Danny

danny the journey

The Journey: Champions opens with you taking control of Alex’s granddad Jim Hunter, on a boggy ‘70s pitch with John Motson on commentary. It’s a neat throwback to FIFA games of yesteryear which had Motty on the mic. From here we catch up with our trio of protagonists. Alex meets, and signs with, Beatriz ‘V’ Villanova, an agent to the stars introduced at last year’s climax . Danny’s friend Ringo seals him a deal as the face of McMillan’s Fish & Chips. And Kim befriends USWNT megastar Alex Morgan after training together ahead of a World Cup qualifier.

The trio heads to Japan for a pre-season tournament, where Kim learns she’s made the US national squad, and Alex H is offered a five-year contract at Real Madrid. We also meet Danny’s condescending eight-years-elder brother Terry, who’s already won the Champions League once and is now playing for PSG. It’s here that the story branches out and you can switch characters at any time.

Ultimate Team rewards: Jim Hunter card & ball

Chapter 2: Alex

danny the journey

Alex has doubts on signing for Real, but V reassures him of his ability. A new ‘mentor’ system is introduced, where winning a series of one-on-one challenges against the likes of Toni Kroos and Gareth Bale earn in-mode boosts. Note that these do not affect FUT rewards. Piggy-in-the-middle in the Madrid dressing room (cool!) is followed by Champions League matches against Spurs, Marseille and Sporting. A key branching decision is who’ll design a logo and clothing for the new Hunter brand: agent V, or mum Catherine. I select Catherine.

Chapter 2: Kim

danny the journey

Kim lines up for the USA against Canada, but receives a frosty reception from (fictional) opposition midfielder Melanie Trembley. After the game we fast forward to spring 2019 in Kim’s story, with her arriving in Madrid to little fanfare from brother Alex. Catherine apologies on her son’s behalf, and takes Kim for dinner. The story then jumps again to summer 2019, with Kim throwing a tantrum at national team-mate Megan Rapinoe for publicising a picture of her sleeping during a flight to the World Cup. She learns that Seattle have enquired about her turning professional rather than attending college, to which her dad reacts badly. The chapter ends after a critical World Cup fixture with Sweden.

Chapter 2: Danny

danny the journey

Danny describes himself as “the club’s Tasmanian” – as opposed to talisman – in an interview, then vows to lift the Champions League trophy with his current team. (Crystal Palace for me, again picking up where FIFA 18 left off.) He’s then paired with Terry’s side, PSG, in the Champions League group stage draw. His pal Ringo begins to have doubts about long-standing agent Michael. The Williams brothers meet in the Champions League and, if you win, Terry texts to say that you “got lucky, Beanpole.” The best bit of the chapter is doing extra crossing-and-shooting work on the common with your old coach from the previous games. Ultimate Team reward: Real Madrid ‘Player Pick’ pack for a 7-game loan

danny the journey

Chapter 3: Alex

danny the journey

Alex’s coach at Madrid shows him an image of a vintage Real side and asks what he sees. Hunter says “trophies, history, success”. His coach responds that this is a club built on family values, and that off-field distractions such as the Hunter brand are affecting his form. Back at his house we see the scene where Kim arrives in Madrid from Alex’s perspective. After Catherine and Kim leave, he dashes outside and is challenged to a first-to-five kickabout in the parking area. It’s great fun. Upon qualification for the Champions League final Alex hosts Neymar at his pad, and is again warned about having too big an entourage. After the final game of the La Liga season, which I win to seal the title, the chapter ends on Alex doing keepy-uppies with Jim’s old leather ball.

Chapter 3: Kim

danny the journey

Ahead of the last 16 World Cup match Kim is congratulated in training for bringing a new dimension to the team. Brother Alex arrives to watch the tournament’s latter stages, with Jim’s lucky ball. V tells Kim that under her guidance she could be football’s next breakout star. But when USA play Australia in the quarter-final the coach overhears her informing Alex Morgan of the plan to go pro, and gives her an almighty dressing-down. She’s given one final chance to show her maturity in the semi-final against Germany. After winning, Kim ends up sharing the hotel lift with Canadian rival Trembley. “See you soon sweetheart,” sneers Trembley, with Canada awaiting in the World Cup final.

Chapter 3: Danny

danny the journey

Agent Michael continues to impress on Danny the importance of investing his wages in bricks and mortar; friend Ringo says the insistence on buying a house is for Michael’s financial benefit. At this point you’re forced to choose between the pair. I select to stay with Michael, and learn that Ringo has been fiddling Danny’s books and left him effectively bankrupt. Back training on the common, Terry shows up to compete in a one-on-one challenge the day before the second leg between Danny’s club and PSG, who’ve been drawn together (again!) in the semi-finals. After Danny’s team wins, Terry shakes his hand but walks off when offered a ticket to the final. You then complete the Premier League season. In my game Palace win the league but Danny insists he’s taking “one game at a time” with the CL final still to come.

Ultimate Team reward: Paris St Germain ‘Player Pick’ pack for a 7-game loan

Chapter 4: Alex & Danny

danny the journey

Chapter 4 combines both Alex and Danny’s stories, with Real Madrid meeting Williams’ team in the Champions League final. The two catch up at the Estadio Metropolitano media day, and Alex challenges Danny to a game of FIFA. Danny accepts but things get heated and Alex apologises for being a rubbish friend in recent months. Later on Danny watches from the stands as Alex, Kim, Jim and Catherine take a walk on the pitch. Brother Terry arrives, and the pair settle their differences. That evening both teams disembark their coaches to a sea of paparazzi, and in the tunnel you’re forced to choose who to play as in the final.

danny the journey

This is actually really difficult, because chapters 2 and 3 paint Alex as a prima donna and Danny as a decent lad desperate to overcome his financial woes. But this being Hunter’s story from FIFA 17, I felt duty bound to see it through. After winning, he’s met in the tunnel by V and you’re forced to choose between celebrating with family or greeting sponsors. I choose family. In the final scene Jim calls Alex the greatest Hunter that ever lived, and the camera pulls back to show Alex contentedly staring up at the night sky.

danny the journey

Disappointingly, after choosing to play as Alex in the final, no resolution to Danny’s story is provided.

Chapter 4: Kim

danny the journey

A short final chapter for Kim, focussed solely on the World Cup final against Canada. Alex Morgan switches the stereo off in the dressing room beforehand and the team is reminded that this is their chance to win a record-setting fourth World Cup, and overcome their deadliest rivals at the same time. In the tunnel beforehand you’re given the option to shake Trembley’s hand, or blank her. After winning there’s a similar option, with Trembley disconsolate on the turf: feign a handshake, or offer a real one? Back in LA, Kim packs her bags as dad tells her that turning pro with Seattle, in a deal brokered by V, is the right decision. He gives Kim a photo of her as a child, holding a football. She leaves that on the mantelpiece for her dad, but grabs Jim’s lucky ball for the road.

Ultimate Team reward: Alex Hunter card & Danny Williams card

Epilogue: Alex, Kim & Danny

danny the journey

A series of images rewinds time to the mid-season Venice Beach Tango League Tournament, briefly introduced in Chapter 3. Here Alex, Danny and Kim face off in a first-to-five, three-on-three match against Rio Ferdinand, Thierry Henry and Alex Morgan. Following that match, Alex gives Jim a brand new football to bring the three-year Journey story arc full circle.

Rio Ferdinand An accomplished former centre-back for  Manchester United and England, Ferdinand is now a well-respected, if occasionally combative, football  pundit and commentator. Known as a strong leader and defensive stalwart during his  career, Ferdinand led Manchester United to a staggering 14 trophies during  his tenure at the club, including six Premier League titles and one UEFA  Champions League title.

Gyasi Zardes An accomplished Homegrown Player for the LA Galaxy,  Zardes has gone from a breakout young MLS star to an accomplished US  national team veteran in just a few years. Zardes is known for his  incredible pace, which he often uses to beat defenders and latch onto  through balls or burst down the wing to send a cross in for his teammates  or cut inside and take a shot on goal.

FIFA 18 The Journey: Hunter Returns Chapter 5 - Knock-Back objectives, decisions and rewards

Everything you need to know to get the most of FIFA 18's story mode sequel.

The Journey: Hunter Returns Chapter 5 - Knock-Back sees you make yet another fresh start, this time in either Spain, France, or Germany with your choice of Atletico Madrid, PSG, or Bayern Munich - but there's a wrinkle in the road ahead...

Here on this page we'll take you through everything you need to know about the The Journey: Hunter Returns Chapter Chapter 5 - Knock-Back objectives, decisions and rewards , and provide a few tips for getting the most out of the Chapter as you go along, too.

For more details, meanwhile, head back to our FIFA 18 The Journey: Hunter Returns walkthrough hub or our main FIFA 18 tips and guide page which branches out to plenty more.

The Journey: Hunter Returns Chapter 5 - Knock-Back objectives, decisions and rewards

danny the journey

The Journey: Hunter Returns Chapter 5 - Knock-Back objectives:

  • Make the Starting XI for a Premier League match (with Danny)
  • Score a goal from a Strike Partner assist
  • Win the EFL Cup (with Danny)

danny the journey

The Journey: Hunter Returns Chapter 5 - Knock-Back decisions:

  • Play Danny's Journey and try to save his career? - Early on you'll have the choice of playing Danny's Journey, which means several games and training sessions as him for your old club, or leaving his career to flounder and fail, but skipping ahead to the Alex Hunter section down the line.

danny the journey

The Journey: Hunter Returns Chapter 5 - Knock-Back rewards:

  • Danny Williams FUT player card.

Things start off simple enough for you in Chapter 5 of Hunter Returns, opening with a press conference at your new club and a chance, as ever, to be either cool or feisty in your responses, before you get to dive into some training and matches.

There's also some pressure on your boss - Dino! Remember him? - but thankfully this is the type of club that spends rather than sacks when things are going wrong. What does that mean for you? Well, in an interesting twist you, for some reason, are given the choice of the player your club signs as a Strike Partner to join you at the club. The choices are Thomas Muller, Antoine Griezmann, and Dele Alli. It's a tough choice, but bear in mind your club, their formation and tactics, and your position when deciding. We chose Dele Alli to join us at Atletico, and even though he's listed as a CAM, he was played as one of the two deeper centre mids in Atletico's 4-4-2, which made is hard work at times to link up with him, with us playing up top.

danny the journey

You'll receive various targets, like in-match objectives, based around your link-up play with the selected Strike Partner, and there's also a new metre measuring your relationship with them that increases or decreases over time depending on how well you link up (this is basically measured in assists and goals scored from partner assists, and it's not clear what benefits or costs there actually are to doing well or not-so-well).

Also, it's worth noting that Muller is already at Bayern and Griezmann already at Atletico - if you choose them, they'll simply become your strike partner, but you won't get another new player joining too, just them.

Anyway, just as things look to be ramping up for you, you'll suffer a setback - an unavoidable injury in a match which puts you out of action for a good chunk of the season. You only have one or two matches with your new Strike Partner to score a goal from their assist as one of this Chapter's objectives as a result, so try to do so as soon as possible!

Hunter, as a result of his injury, is sad. But he comes to terms with it through watching his old pal, Danny Williams, make his big break back at your old club in the Premier League… and suddenly you're playing as him!

Do what you can in the first match you take over Danny for, and then it's time for an important chat with your old club's gaffer. Danny's career is hanging in the balance - he's talented, but coasting, failing to put in the effort where it really counts. After that revelation in the meeting, you'll have a choice: play out Danny's next few games and save his career, or leave him to fail and skip ahead to Hunter's recovery in the next chapter.

For more help? Our FIFA 18 tips and guide gives you an overview of our many pointers, and if you're playing The Journey in particular, see our The Journey: Hunter Returns walkthrough . Meanwhile, we have lists of FIFA 18 wonderkids and the best young players , FIFA 18 player ratings , the best strikers , best wingers , best midfielders , best defenders and best goalkeepers . Elsewhere, we have details on five star skillers and skill moves listed , how to score free kicks, penalties and set pieces , and the FIFA 18 best players by position . Fan of Ultimate Team? We look at FIFA 18 Chemistry explained , the latest OTW Ones to Watch cards , along with best Chemistry Styles for each position , and finally how to earn FIFA Coins quickly and for free .

Opt to save Danny, and you'll have a fair few games and training sessions ahead, until you reach the League Cup Final against good old Gareth's team and your main rivals. Hopefully you'll put that little man with the big mouth in his place by the end of the game (not by kicking him to bits, but by winning, as tempting as that would be…)

That's near enough it for this chapter, with The Journey: Hunter Returns Chapter 6 - Win Together, Lose Alone up next to finish it off.

Put any remaining skill points into Danny's Traits tree, and then you're just about done, the legendary Williams' career is (hopefully) saved!

Gareth Walker (London, 21st November 1999) is the main antagonist of The Journey franchise. He is an 18-year-old from Clapham, London. He is ex-friend of Alex Hunter and arch-nemesis of Danny Williams , the protagonists of The Journey mode.

  • 3 Appearance
  • 4.1 FIFA 17
  • 4.2 FIFA 18

FIFA 17 [ ]

Whilst growing up with Alex for most of his childhood and teenage years, he also fell in the same path and became a professional footballer. Gareth signed for the same Premier League team as Alex Hunter did, and made quite a performance in his debut season, when Alex was on loan in the EFL Championship. His ego and personality quickly came to a down fall and his character became very cocky, arrogant and turned the long time friendship with Alex Hunter into a new rivalry. After Hunter comes back on loan to his parent club, Walker then departs for the clubs rivals, only for the fact that the rival club were willing to offer him more money and big name deals. When the end of the season approaches, Walker and Hunter start in the FA Cup Final and the pair encounter each other in the tunnel before the match. The pair become reconciled by offering a handshake after the match result.

FIFA 18 [ ]

In FIFA 18, Walker isn't seen as much. Walker was seen when he was about to go for a football interview with Rio Ferdinand after Alex finished his interview before him. Gareth spoke to Alex for a few minutes and criticized him for having Michael Taylor as his agent still after Gareth had a down moment with him, which led to Walker firing Taylor as his agent. Another time he was featured was in the EFL Cup Final, where he faces Danny Williams.

Appearance [ ]

Walker is around the height of 5' 7 ft and weighs approximately 75 kg. After apearing in FIFA 17 and FIFA 18 Journey, in the final Journey FIFA 19, Walker is no longer featured anymore.

  • "Bet I'll be on the score sheet before you, mate. Your pride's enough."
  • "Nice game, mate, really took it to us out there. Look, about when I left. You know all that - contracts, money, media. It all got to me. I've got a company chasing after you at the time, they want me to model pants for them, they won't leave me alone!"

  • "Yeah... I guess we are the "ones-to-watch", eh?
  • "You haven't been my agent since the mess of a transfer, have you?"
  • "What, you're not still with that guy (Michael), are you? Well, you're the one of few. Listen, mate. On the level, just ask around. Taylor is just a bit of joke. He was a big part of my transfer blowing up the way it did."
  • "You lads must be proper desperate... especially if this clown is playing up front of you. (Danny: Well, did you lads hear something?! Ha-ha-ha, it's you!) Oh, you're in the Premier League, eh Williams? You're having a laugh, mate. You'll be gone as soon as they sign a proper player."
  • "Unlucky, Williams. I guess we were just too good for you lot out there today, eh? He-he-heh!"

Editorial Reviews

From the author, from the back cover, about the author, excerpt. © reprinted by permission. all rights reserved., a journey on the oregon trail, iuniverse llc.

Tom Williams pushed the chair back from his cluttered desk, stood up, and took a long look at the marked up map on the wall. It showed the Oregon Trail and all its landmarks and cut-offs, all 2,000 miles of prairie, dust, rivers, and mountains.

During the recent war between the states, Tom lost men in battle, from fevers, sickness, and disease. That was expected. On the westward trail, he knew he would lose women and children as well. That too was expected. During his years with Amos Anderson's wagon trains to California he'd seen great losses, including whole families. Still, any death did not sit well with him, especially since so many were avoidable. As Tom prepared for this year's trip, he was looking closely at every detail, every action that could affect the trip. Now he had a problem.

He glimpsed again at the letter in his hand, shook his head, and looked out the only window in the room. It was on the north side of a simple, two-story, clapboard farmhouse his parents owned - it didn't make sense for him to own a place since he was gone most of the year. In the distance he could see the broad, shimmering, and treacherous Missouri River. Straight back from the house he could see his crew loitering around one of the corrals. Tom smiled knowing Ian had to be at the center of it. He grabbed his hat and headed out of his small office, still holding the letter.

He walked out the back door to the hard dirt lane that led to the barn. He gazed at the gently rolling hills, some plowed and ready for seeding, others waiting to be turned over. He remembered helping his father clear, plow, and plant those hills. For a brief moment, he wished he'd chosen to stay a farmer. But then he never would have met Sarah.

The barn was large, red, and had a six-sided cupola on the roof. This allowed air and light into the second story where they stored hay, straw, and feed. The first story had large wooden doors on railings so they could be slid open and shut when moving the dairy cows or horses. There were two large fenced corrals, one attached to each side of the barn. Tom's crew was standing around one of these watching his scout, Ian O'Fallon, work a horse.

"When you're done showing off Ian, I need you to talk to you," Tom called to his friend. "I have a task to keep you busy for a few days."

Tom and Ian met when Tom was stationed out west and Ian was scouting for the Army. They also fought together in the recent war. When Tom started his own wagon train, Ian was right there with him, scouting the trail ahead. But, for all their years together, much of Ian's past was still a mystery to Tom.

Ian continued working with the horse, his own roan. Beau was tossing his head and fidgeting, something Tom had never seen him do before.

"Shouldn't you all being doing something else?" Tom asked, as he leaned against the fence that surrounded the corral.

"Beau's giving Ian some grief," one of the men said. "We all wanted to watch. We think he's lost his magic touch."

Tom looked at Ian as he stood in front of the horse, talking slowly to the restless animal. Beau stood a good sixteen hands at the withers (that's close to five and a half feet) and Ian was a good head and shoulders above that. Their eyes could meet when Beau brought his head up, but he wouldn't stand still today. Ian had been riding Beau as long as Tom had known him, which was over eight years, but today Tom saw concern in Ian's face. That too was something he'd never seen before.

"He needs a good running," Ian said, his voice mellow with a distinct Irish brogue. "Éasca," he said softly to Beau as he reached for some rope. He tied both ends to Beau's halter and threw the rest over the withers. He turned and looked at Tom. "Why do you want to talk to me?"

"I have a scouting job for you."

"I'll come in when I get back." He leapt onto Beau's bare back and walked him over to the gate where one of the hands opened it to let them out. Ian reached over to grab his low crowned, flat brimmed hat off one of the posts. He put it on, letting his long, wavy brown hair, hang loose.

"Don't you want a saddle and bridle with Beau acting up like this?" Tom asked with concern.

"No. I prefer riding bareback and Beau never did need a bridle," Ian replied, as he coaxed Beau into a looping canter.

"Watch out for mole holes!" Tom yelled. "Pop said he's seen quite a few this spring," he added, as Ian and Beau cantered off and the rest of the men headed off to their chores.

About an hour later Ian and Beau came cantering back. Tom saw them across the field and headed towards the barn. Suddenly, Beau and Ian went down.

"Ian!" Tom yelled, as he and the other men ran towards the downed rider and horse.

When Tom arrived, Ian was just getting to get to his feet, pain obvious in his face as he cradled his right arm. Beau didn't move. Ian walked over to Beau and knelt by the sweaty, dead horse.

"Ian, what happened?" Tom asked.

"Beau just wanted one last good run," he said, his voice tight.

"And you?" Tom queried.

"Broke my arm. He died mid-stride. I didn't have time to react."

"Damn shame. I know how much Beau meant to you," Tom said, as he looked at the horse. "We need to get you inside and have a look at that arm."

Some of the other men arrived by then. They removed their hats in reverence to Beau.

"Otto," Tom called to one of his men, "Help me get Ian up. Then you and the others take good care of Beau. And someone, find Doc and send him up to the house."

The two men helped Ian to his feet and Tom walked Ian toward the house.

Mrs. Williams looked out the kitchen window when she heard Tom yell. As Tom and Ian headed toward the house, she noticed Ian cradling his arm. She put a kettle on to boil and waited for them at the kitchen door.

Her son was in his mid-thirties with light brown hair and blue eyes. Tall and lean, he looked every bit the English gentleman, like her father. His friend Ian was something else.

Ian was a bit older and taller than Tom, standing over six feet with a well-toned, agile build. His face could be hard and unwavering and his blue eyes unflinching. Yet, when he smiled, it was a face even she fell in love with. He wore his dark hair long, either braided or tied at the nape of his neck. Today his hair was hanging loose and looking wild. His clothing was more like the Indians out west, including his moccasin covered feet. All of this, and his Irish brogue, blended well into the mystique of the solitary man who rarely spoke of his past. Still, she loved him like a son and was very concerned as she opened the door to let the two men into the kitchen.

"Ian, what have you done?" she asked.

"Think I broke my arm," he replied. "I let Beau have his head today and he ran until his heart gave out and I went over his head."

Mrs. Williams led Ian to a chair and let him sit down, resting his arm on the table.

A knock at the door announced Doc's arrival. Tom let him in. Doc was one of his father's farmhands, good at setting bones and stitching up cuts.

Doc pulled on his white whiskers, looked at Ian, and grunted. "Heard you took a tumble off your horse young feller."

"Sea," Ian replied.

"Lemme take a look at it. Need to get your shirt off first," he said, walking around to where Ian was sitting. Mrs. Williams and Doc helped Ian slide his good arm out of the sleeve of his tunic, then over his head, and carefully pulled it off his injured arm, exposing swelling and growing discoloration.

"Yep, damn good job of breakin' it. Gonna hurt some when I set it. You wanna a drink to help with the pain?"

"No," replied Ian.

Mrs. Williams was surprised he turned down the drink as she looked at his arm. There was a lump in his forearm where the bone had broken. Though it hadn't broken through the skin, she knew it was going to hurt when Doc set it.

"Are you sure you don't want a drink?" she asked. Ian just shook his head.

"Okay," Doc said. "Tom, you hold him tight and I'll get it set. Mrs. Williams, can you get me some boards and cloth, please?"

Mrs. Williams went to the back door and opened it for one of Tom's men, who'd just walked up. "George brought them up," she said, as she let him in.

The kettle was whistling and she poured the boiling water into a teapot, allowing the tea to steep. She always had Irish tea for Ian, but once the tea was steeped she would add something more she knew Ian would need.

As she waited for the tea to brew, she turned to watch Doc set the arm. She looked at Ian sitting very still and resting his broken arm on the table. He took a deep breath, let it out slowly, then began to chant.

"What you singin' there?" Doc asked.

"A Lakota chant."

"Lakota? Where'd you learn it?"

Ian grimaced, then answered, "From a Lakota medicine man I used to know."

"Was that your friend Red Hawk?" Tom asked.

Ian simply nodded and began to chant again.

Mrs. Williams watched as Tom put his arm around Ian's shoulders and his knee in the back of Ian's chair, as a brace. Ian kept chanting as Doc ran his hands up and down Ian's arm. Mrs. Williams closed her eyes in anticipation of Doc's actions.

Ian didn't yell when Doc yanked his arm and the bones snapped into place. He did say, "damn," through clenched teeth. "Excuse me Mrs. Williams," he added.

"It's alright Ian," she replied. "I've heard worse things said for less cause." The tea was ready. She poured it, and the additive, into a cup and placed it on the table in front of him. "Here now, have a good cup of tea."

Ian sipped the tea and made a face, but smiled at her, then winced as Doc felt his arm again.

"It'll be a few weeks 'fore you can use it agin," Doc said as he wrapped and splinted the arm. "Did a good job of bustin' it up but everythin' feels likes it's back in place."

"Thanks, Doc," Ian said, as he took a deep breath and another sip of the spiked tea.

A few minutes later, Mrs. Williams could see the tea was taking affect as Ian looked at her son and asked, "What about this scouting trip?"

"I want you to go to St. Louis," Tom replied.

"What's in St. Louis?"

"An Irish horse breeder who wants to join the train. I want you to go to St. Louis and check him out."

"Well now," Ian said, raising his eyebrows, a mischievous tone creeping into his words. "Time in St. Louis with a fellow countryman." His tone was more serious when he asked, "What's the problem?"

Tom handed him the letter. "It's from a man called Sea-b-hac," he said.

Ian laughed, "It's pronounced sháouk and means `hawk.' It's not a common name."

Mrs. Williams stood behind Ian and read the letter over his shoulder. It was from D. C. Seabhac, Irish Horse Breeder, and was written on fine stationary with meticulous penmanship. That alone spoke of status and money.

In the letter, Seabhac said he would arrive in St. Louis later this week, "to conclude a few business details." He would then bring his horses and crew up to St. Joseph by the end of the first week of April with the understanding the wagon train would leave the last week.

Seabhac was bringing a stallion, ten brood mares and two dozen other horses. His crew would consist of eight or nine men, his foreman and partner, and himself. He went on to say fifty head of cattle would be delivered to the Williams' farm after he arrived.

Seabhac had already procured wagons and teams. He had the necessary supplies for the first leg of the journey and claimed to have pre-positioned supplies along the standard route to Oregon.

Ian finished reading the letter and sipped his cup of tea, which Mrs. Williams refilled with more additive than tea.

"Hmm," said Ian.

"Can a crew of ten handle that many horses and cattle?" Tom asked.

"Sea," Ian replied. "Horses are very social creatures and will follow the stallion. Cattle aren't the smartest of animals but we'll have plenty of others to herd them. I'll ask him for more details when I meet him but I need to be packing my bag so I can be on my way in the morning."

"Thanks, Ian. I knew this would interest you."

Mrs. Williams smiled as Ian stood up and swayed. Her son laughed as he stood up and steadied his friend.

"For now you need to go lie down and rest," Tom said.

"I think your mother has made sure of that with the Irish whiskey she's been putting in my tea," he said, winking and smiling at her. "I still want to get to St. Louis before Seabhac. I need to find a new trail horse. I let Beau have his head today. I think he knew it was his last run. Damn shame. Begging your pardon again, Mrs. Williams."

Mrs. Williams just smiled. "Come along, Ian. You need to rest."

Sarah, Tom's petite wife, walked into the kitchen. "So you're sending my lover away?" she said, in a teasing tone.

Mrs. Williams laughed as Sarah sweetly batted her deep blue eyes at Ian. She'd seen Sarah tease Ian many times and Ian always indulged her. This time was no different, except Ian was now a bit intoxicated.

"Oh, Sarah, me darling," Ian said, as his Irish brogue thickened, "how could I ever be leaving you?" He moved to put his arm around Sarah and swayed again.

"Come on, Ian," Mrs. Williams said. "The front room is waiting for you."

She put an arm around Ian's waist and helped him walk to the front bedroom. She pulled the blinds, shut the door, and left Ian to settle himself on the bed and sleep.

The next morning Mrs. Williams washed and braided Ian's hair, and Tom drove him into town to catch the train.

"What are you going to do when you get to St. Louis?" Tom asked.

"I'll be heading for the docks. I'll find out everything I need to know there," he said.

Ian boarded the train and found a seat. He stretched out, pushed his hat over his eyes, and once the train started rolling, he let the rhythmic clacking of the wheels lull him to sleep.

In the spring of 1867, the country was still rebuilding after the War Between the States. The Reconstruction Act had passed, Nebraska had been admitted into the Union, and westward emigration was in full swing again. People were looking to California and Oregon with the hope of finding a better or freer life and many began their trek in St. Louis, Missouri.

St. Louis, where Louis and Clark began their western expedition in 1804, was a growing river town, the gateway to the west, and a major commercial port on the Mississippi River. The population had been growing steadily, but now, with the War Between the States over, and the renewed push westward, the population had exploded to well over 200,000.

When Ian arrived in St. Louis, he grabbed his bag, got off the train, and headed for the riverfront where there was always a layer of smoke down by the docks. Boats pulled in to load and unload. As soon as they were ready to move, the whistles blew, their tall stacks belched out smoke and steam, and a layer of black smoke hung over the water.

With each belch of steam, paddlewheels splashed into the water, churning up the soft river bottom, as the boats maneuvered away from the docks and out into the muddy waters. Some boats headed south towards New Orleans and others to the Ohio River and the east. Both routes took people to a more civilized and genteel world.

Then, there were the boats that navigated the treacherous Missouri, carrying mostly supplies to points north and west, even up into the Dakotas. Ian knew greenhorns would eventually be aboard some of those Missouri boats, heading to St. Joseph to join Tom's wagon train to Oregon.

Ian went to the hotel closest to the docks, assuming Seabhac would be staying there. After convincing the clerk at the front desk he was an old friend of Seabhac's, Ian found out he was right. Seabhac had reserved several rooms and would be arriving on Friday. So Ian also booked a room.

Through other conversations that day, Ian discovered Seabhac had advertised for hired hands to help with the trip. He found a paper with the advertisement. It read:

Mrs. Seabhac, now that could mean trouble. Few men would work for a woman, especially a widowed woman. Ian pictured a rich, pampered matron, dressed in taffeta with a starched collar, her patient foreman at her side.

Watch Ex-JOURNEY Drummer DEEN CASTRONOVO Sing 'Don't Stop Believin'' While Driving Around In His Car

A new video of veteran drummer Deen Castronovo ( THE DEAD DAISIES , JOURNEY , REVOLUTION SAINTS ) singing the classic JOURNEY song "Don't Stop Believin'" while driving around in his car can be seen below.

Castronovo 's 17-year tenure with JOURNEY ended in 2015 when the band fired him after his arrest for a variety of charges involving a former fiancée (including physical abuse, coercion, and unlawful use of a weapon).

Asked in a 2018 interview with "The Blaring Out With Eric Blair Show" how playing with JOURNEY changed him, Deen said: "I learned how to play for the song and to play as a team and remember that the song is the most important thing. I got to work with Jonathan [ Cain ] again and Neal [ Schon ], and it was like going home. I've known those guys since BAD ENGLISH , since I was 23. To be able to be 17 years in that band, it's a dream come true. I'd pinch myself. There'd be times I'd be walking with my drum tech in an arena and I'd just stop and go, 'Dude, I play for JOURNEY .' It was a cool thing, and I'm very, very grateful that they gave me that opportunity."

On the topic of singing two songs on JOURNEY 's 2005 album "Generations" , Deen said: "I listen back now and I cringe. I could have done better, you know – my first time singing on a record lead like that. It was kind of scary, but for me, I learned how to sing for the first time with a band as a lead singer. I'd never done that. I got more comfortable and got better as the time [passed] to where now, with REVOLUTION SAINTS ... I'm definitely not Steve Perry . I'm definitely not Jeff Scott Soto or even Arnel Pineda , but I love what I do and I do the best I can. I'm a drummer that happens to sing. I'm not a lead singer. For me, drums are my most important thing. With JOURNEY , I was able to sing two or three songs [live] to be able to give Arnel a break. I would never want to be a frontman. I could never be a frontman. That's scary, dude. If I'm going to sing, I want those drums around me. I want that protection."

Asked whether he misses being in JOURNEY , Deen said: "Totally. I miss the music; I miss my brothers. Of course. The touring was amazing. The band, the music, was amazing. I'm just grateful to be back playing. I never thought I'd play again, so being back and playing again and in the trenches is a great thing. But I miss playing those songs. I will always miss it. It was a big, big opportunity for me."

Deeno's Car Karaoke Great way to kick off an Easter Monday morning🐰⚡️ Sit back, turn it up and sing along with Deeno 😃😄😁 Just don't stop believin'🚀😘 Posted by The Dead Daisies on Sunday, April 12, 2020

Danny Trejo

Danny Trejo has no plans to retire.

The craggy-faced Latino action star spent decades in the B-movie trenches, playing ex-cons and bodyguards, tough guys and prison thugs —drawing inspiration from his real-life stints in California state facilities in San Quentin, Soledad, Folsom, and Vacaville—before becoming “a Mexican superhero” with Robert Rodriguez ’s Machete series. But at 78, Trejo continues to chop his way through roles silly, schlocky and (occasionally) sublime.

“I’m the king of independent movies, and I love it!” Trejo boasts, then undercuts his mean guy screen persona with a booming laugh. “I like doing them because on an independent movie it’s, ‘I pawned my car for this, my mum loaned me the money for this.’ It’s serious stuff. An independent movie is more serious than a billion-dollar movie.”

Trejo has had his share of small parts in big movies. His death scene with Robert De Niro in Michael Mann’s seminal crime drama  Heat  is legendary, and he’s appeared alongside the likes of Harrison Ford ( Six Days Seven Nights ), Antonio Banderas ( Desperado ) and peak box office Nicolas Cage ( Con Air ).

And it’s not as if he needs the money. The L.A. native, born and raised in Echo Park, has smartly invested the proceeds from his long career in a series of successful business ventures, including Trejo’s Tacos, Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts and a record label, Trejo’s Music.

You’re definitely someone who paid his dues in this business, climbing up the ranks from extra to top of the call sheet.

I remember when I first got on the call sheet. I didn’t even have a name. It was just: “tattooed guy.”

When did you know that acting was going to be a real job?

It was on the set of [1985’s]  Runaway Train . I met a friend, [screenwriter] Eddie Bunker, who was a friend of mine in prison. He remembered I was the welter- weight champion in San Quentin. He said, “Danny, are you still boxing? We need somebody to train one of the actors [Eric Roberts] how to box. It pays $320 a day.”

I was working as a drug counsellor, making maybe $190, $220 a week before taxes. So I asked: “How badly you want this guy beat up?” From that moment on, my entire life changed. For the first years of my career, I was “bad guy,” “mean guy,” “Chicano dude,” “tattoo guy.” But I always made my $320 a day.

Did you feel typecast?

The first time I got interviewed, by some girl probably fresh out of interview school, she asked me that: “Don’t you feel you’re being typecast as the mean Chicano dude with the tattoos?” I said: “But I am the mean Chicano dude with the tattoos!” I was just proud to be working.

Who was the first person to see you as more than just the “scary Chicano with tattoos”?

Robert Rodriguez. We did a movie called  Desperado . It was in Mexico. And nobody at the time really knew who [the film’s star] Antonio Banderas was. I was on set and everyone was asking me for autographs and taking pictures. Robert says: “Hey Danny, everybody thinks you’re the star of this movie.” I said: “You mean I’m not?” We talked and he said: “I’ve got this movie I’ve always wanted to do:  Machete .” We talked about it and when we did [Rodriguez-directed]  Spy Kids , I was Uncle Machete. Then he did  Grindhouse  [2007] and we did the fake trailer for  Machete . And the minute we walked out of the theater, every- one was saying, “You have to do Machete ! It’ll be the first Mexican superhero.”

How did that franchise change things for you?

I knew things had changed after we finished  Machete . It was Halloween and I opened the door and there’d be little kids there, Mexican kids, dressed like Machete, with little fake mus- taches and everything. It wasn’t Batman or Superman, they were playing this Mexican guy. It brought tears to my eyes.

Are you going to make a third  Machete  film, the rumored  Machete in Space ?

After all your years in the business, do you still get impostor syndrome?

Every day. I’m afraid somebody’s going to wake me up and I’m back in prison: “Dan, it’s time for chow. You were mumbling something in your sleep about Robert De Niro.” You know, I hear some actors complain on set. And I think: Have you ever tarred a roof in 90-degree weather? That’s work. This is playing cowboys and Indians.

You mentioned De Niro, and it was your performance in  Heat  that convinced a lot of people that you were a real actor. What did you learn from him on that film?

I owe my performance in that movie to De Niro. We became friends and he’s just an unbelievable, beautiful man. I love his politics. We had the big death scene in that film and I asked: “How should I play this?2 I think I was planing to do it like John Wayne, real macho. Bob — I can call him Bob — says: “I think you’re already dead and you’ve got just enough life left to beg me to kill you.” That film changed everything for me. I mean: De Niro, [Al] Pacino, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight. And Danny Trejo. I remember Bob did an interview for the film and he said: “Danny held his own.”

After more than 433 screen credits, is there any role you’d still love to do?

That ’50s movie’s beautiful and Brando is great actor, don’t get me wrong, but I just wish I could do a Zapata movie to show the Mexican kids we had heroes. We had real heroes who fought revolutions with sticks and knives. My kids are my real legacy, but if I have a film legacy, I’d like that to be it.

The Real Story Behind ‘The Bikeriders’ and the Danny Lyon Photography Book That Inspired It

A new film dramatizes the story of a motorcycle club chronicled by Lyon in the 1960s, offering a tribute to the outlaw spirit

Benny on a bike

Ellen Wexler

Assistant Editor, Humanities

Danny Lyon considered himself a bikerider, but there were glaring differences between him and the members of the Chicago Outlaws , a notorious motorcycle club. They were blue-collar Midwesterners riding Harleys and living on the outskirts of society. Lyon was a college-educated photographer who rode a Triumph and toted around two cameras and a seven-pound tape recorder .

It was the mid-1960s, and Lyon was following in the footsteps of Hunter S. Thompson, the journalist who rode with—and wrote about —the Hells Angels around the same time. Lyon even sent a letter to Thompson, perhaps expecting encouragement from a like-minded chronicler. Instead, the writer advised Lyon to “get the hell out of that club. … I’ve seen the Angels work, and they scare the hell out of me.” Lyon bristled at this advice, which he later summed up thusly : “[Thompson] advised me not to join the Outlaws and to wear a helmet. I joined the club and seldom wore a helmet.”

Lyon documented the Outlaws for several years, but he was not an objective observer. When The Bikeriders , a collection of photographs and interviews, came out in 1968, Lyon—who had become a full member of the club in 1965—billed it as an “attempt to record and glorify the life of the American bikerider. It is a personal record, dealing mostly with bikeriders whom I know and care for.”

Now, more than 50 years later, The Bikeriders forms the basis of a new movie adaptation of the same name. Directed by Jeff Nichols , the film uses verbatim quotes from Lyon’s interviews for around 70 percent of its dialogue. The plot, meanwhile, is a work of fiction created by weaving the interviews together.

The movie is concerned less with telling a true story than with capturing the feeling of freeways and freedom, of outlaws and open roads—what Lyon calls the “spirit of the bikeriders: the spirit of the hand that twists open the throttle on the crackling engines of big bikes and rides them on racetracks or through traffic or, on occasion, into oblivion.”

Here’s what you need to know about The Bikeriders (both the book and the adaptation) as the film, which stars Austin Butler , Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy , arrives in theaters in the United States on Friday.

The outlaw archetype

In 1957, about a decade before The Bikeriders , Jack Kerouac published On the Road , his famous chronicle of disillusioned, peripatetic young travelers wandering the country and searching for answers. One reviewer described Kerouac as a “kind of literary James Dean,” the actor responsible for a formidable percentage of the motorcycle’s cultural cachet.

Members of Hells Angels rounding a corner on their motorcycles in 1966

Like many young men, Lyon, who was 15 when On the Road came out, was inspired by the book. In the summer of 1962, after wrapping up a semester at the University of Chicago, he asked friends to drop him off along Route 66, “ the road Jack Kerouac used ,” and hitchhiked to Cairo, Illinois, where he saw future congressman John Lewis speak and began photographing scenes from the civil rights movement. By 1964, he was back in Chicago , where he started planning The Bikeriders .

Around this time, Lyon wrote to a publisher about the project. When he revisited the letter many years later, he realized he came across as “a kind of crazy person who writes in this sub-Jack Kerouac-style prose about the open road and the freedom of being an outlaw,” as he told the Observer in 2014.

American motorcycle clubs were also fueled by this outlaw spirit. Their history stretches back to the end of World War II , when returning veterans —particularly those having trouble reintegrating into civilian life—began to form new groups. The lifestyle combined several values these former soldiers clung to: As Vox put it in 2015, “Nostalgia for the camaraderie and risk-taking of the war made the clubs’ focus on male bonding and dangerous activities like, say, riding motorcycles particularly attractive.”

Many such clubs were part of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA). Membership in the organization, which was founded in 1924 and still exists today, requires adherence to strict rules. Some clubs resisted these rules and formed without the group’s stamp of approval. As Lyon wrote in The Bikeriders , they “are so far in spirit from attitudes of the AMA that they neither want nor could receive AMA sanction. These are known as outlaw clubs.”

danny the journey

Members of outlaw clubs are also known by another term: “ one-percenters .” This identifier comes from an oft-repeated (but possibly false) story about the AMA insisting that 99 percent of motorcyclists are mainstream, law-abiding Americans. The outlaw clubs proudly position themselves in that remaining 1 percent.

One of the first such clubs was the McCook Outlaws , which formed in McCook, Illinois, in the 1930s. After a period of dormancy during World War II, the group came back together and ultimately relocated to Chicago, becoming the Chicago Outlaws in the 1950s, about a decade before Lyon started tagging along.

The bikeriders’ best storyteller

Each of Lyon’s interviewees had a unique perspective on outlaw culture and how they fit into it. Cal, a former airman, had been to 18 countries and “seen what most people have read about.” Rodney Pink, meanwhile, was a motorcycle racer who insisted that “being on a motorcycle don’t make you special at all” and lamented that while “everyone wants to be part of something,” nobody wants to “have any responsibility unloaded on ’em.”

Danny and Kathy

The bikeriders also spoke candidly about the dangers of their lifestyle. Johnny Goodpaster, who once broke his leg in 17 places, called such injuries an “occupational disease,” while “Funny Sonny” described watching a “little guy on his Honda” with a “helmet and everything” who accidentally drove over a cliff.

But as Lyon recalled in a 1997 preface to a new edition of the book, the “best storyteller” of the group was Kathy Bauer , 26, who “didn’t even ride a motorcycle, but was married to Benny, a member of the club.”

According to her interview, Kathy noticed Benny while she was at a bar with a friend, who advised her not to get involved. “Every time he gets up on his bike, he has an accident,” the friend warned. Benny persisted, planting himself outside Kathy’s house and refusing to go home.

“My boyfriend would still come over, and Benny would still sit here, and I’d tell him, ‘You better go home.’ And he wouldn’t go,” she recalled. “So finally, my boyfriend left, and Benny was still around. So he says, ‘Let me take you to the meeting. Everything’ll be real nice.’ So I went to the meeting. After that, I started goin’ out with him. I only went out with him, never with any of the other guys in the club. And five weeks later, I married him.”

In The Bikeriders , Kathy describes the arc of the couple’s relationship in a series of startling anecdotes and off-the-cuff reflections:

I’ve had nothin’ but trouble since I married Benny. I’ve seen more jails, been to more courts and met more lawyers, and it’s only a year. That’s a short time for so much to happen.   Benny thinks that when you die, you’re better off than when you’re living. You know, like when his dad died, he said, “It’s just as well, he’s better off that way.” When his friends got killed, well, they’re better off that way. No feelings.   I thought I could change him, you know? Every woman thinks that she can change a guy. Not to her own ways, but to be different. Not to be different, but to be, I don’t know. Like he’s wild. I used to think he’d get over that. But he don’t.

Lyon’s book features one photograph of Kathy. Sporting a dark beehive haircut with side-swept bangs, she stands in a bathroom with three mirrors, each reflecting her profile at a slightly different angle. In the main reflection, she looks directly at the camera, lips slightly parted, at ease but alert.

Benny, meanwhile, is an elusive figure. While Kathy describes him at length, he was never interviewed. The book features two photographs identified as him: One shows him gripping a pool table covered with ring stains; his head hangs between his shoulders, obscuring his face. The other captures him from behind on his motorcycle, wearing a “Chicago Outlaws” jacket and backlit by headlights.

Adapting The Bikeriders for the screen

The film adaptation, which debuts Friday, follows characters based on Kathy (played by Comer), who also narrates the story, and Benny (Butler). Some scenes play out just as the anecdotes in the book, such as the pair’s first meeting. Kathy is at a bar with a friend when she notices Benny, who is leaning against a pool table in a nearly perfect recreation of Lyon’s photo. Here, though, he looks up. We see his face, hear his voice and find out what happens next.

Still of Benny

Ahead of the movie premiere, Lyon heard from a man named Kirk: Kathy and Benny’s son. He learned that Kathy had died, but Benny was living in Florida. “So I call Benny up,” Lyon tells the Telegraph . “We have a great talk. He’s totally upbeat. And then he says, ‘Hey, you know the picture of me at the pool hall?’ I said, yeah. He says, ‘It’s not me.’ What? ‘Check out the tattoos. It’s not me.’”

The movie is structured in two parts. The first half follows a group of misfits finding a family; much like Lyon’s book, it is meant to “glorify the life of the American bikerider.” As one of the club members, Brucie (Damon Herriman), says, “We don’t belong nowhere else, so we belong together.” The second half is a darker meditation on the dangers of outlaw life. As members of a younger generation join up, they introduce a newfound aggression and propensity for cruelty.

“[The violence] in the second half is fairly cruel, and that’s the important part,” Nichols tells PA Media . “If you just have the first hour, this would be a film glamorizing violence. Nobody wants that, nobody needs that, the world doesn’t need that. If you take the two parts as the whole, I think it says, ‘Here are the consequences of choosing to live this kind of life.’”

The book does not feature this second chapter. But while Lyon has retained an affection for the outsider spirit—“I like rebels and think they are intrinsic to the survival of our democracy,” he told the Chicago Reader in 2014—his views have evolved with time.

By the end of his stint with the Outlaws, Lyon was already growing disillusioned with the group. As he said to the Observer , he remembers getting into a “big disagreement with this guy who rolled out a huge Nazi flag as a picnic rug to put our beers on. By then, I had realized that some of these guys were not so romantic after all.”

What became of the Outlaws

Today, more than 300 outlaw motorcycle gangs operate across the United States. According to the Department of Justice , which defines the groups as “organizations whose members use their motorcycle clubs as conduits for criminal enterprises ,” the Outlaws have some 1,700 members in more than 100 chapters around the world. The club has engaged in criminal activities such as “arson, assault, explosives, extortion, fraud, homicide, intimidation, kidnapping, money laundering, prostitution, robbery, theft and weapons violations.”

Benny on his motorcycle

The real Outlaws are “certainly aware of the film,” Nichols tells the Globe and Mail , but he has not had any contact with them. In the film, the club is called the Vandals, a fictional name intended to distance the project from existing groups, which the director had no desire to portray on screen. “If I’m being completely honest, I’m not really interested in contemporary biker culture,” he adds. “I was interested in the people in Danny’s book.”

Besides, Lyon believes the two groups have little in common. The people he knew in the 1960s were quite different from today’s biker types, whom he notices in connection with news events like the January 6 insurrection . Instead, the photographer tells A Rabbit’s Foot , the closest analogues are perhaps “the Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Sioux fighting the oil pipeline and the catastrophe of climate change.”

Today’s Outlaws appear to have an internet presence, albeit a limited one. One website, belonging to the Outlaws M.C. , instructs, “Everything is done face to face NOT online DO NOT write us asking how to join! Find an Outlaw and ask him!” Another site, belonging to the Outlaws M.C. World , features an article titled, “What is [an] Outlaw M.C. one-percenter today?” “To say that one-percenters are criminals or people of a lesser moral code than the rest of society is a tainted opinion,” the pseudonymous author argues. “We may not live by the rules of society, but we do live by its laws.”

Kathy and Benny

Another language quibble: “Bikerider” is not a word, strictly speaking. It does not appear in the dictionary. According to Lyon, it is a word that once held a narrow definition, describing a subculture as it existed at a specific time and place.

“Back then in Chicago, they had a lot of names for things, names that were of the Midwest, and of that city, words belonging to that place and to the people who lived there,” wrote Lyon in the 1997 preface. “One of those words was bikeriders . No one there ever called them motorcyclists . The machines were called bikes , and the riders were called bikeriders . The word biker was simply never used in the Midwest by anyone at that time.”

After finding a publisher for the book, a copy editor explained that the title would need to be two words: The Bike Riders . Lyon pled his case—and won. In the years that followed, he was aghast to see “biker” become widespread. “I even use it myself,” he wrote. “The term that I heard and loved, and used with such pride, has all but been forgotten.”

Freehold grad Danny Garcia wins 'Top Chef Wisconsin'

2 minute read.

danny the journey

A chef who got his start in a Monmouth County high school cooking program is the newest "Top Chef."

Danny Garcia, a 2010 graduate of Freehold High School and former student of the Freehold Regional High School District's Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management Magnet Program, took home the title during the season 21 finale of the Bravo cooking show on June 19.

Garcia told Food & Wine that he prepared for the competition by watching all 20 seasons of "Top Chef" and researching the culinary scene of Wisconsin, where this season was filmed.

Hidden Gems: Kostas Grill in Tuckerton is a Greek delight

Garcia, who lives and works in New York, and fellow chefs Dan Jacobs of Wisconsin and Savannah Miller of North Carolina were tasked with cooking "the best four-course meal of your lives," judge and host Kristen Kish explained in the episode.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Garcia chose to center his final meal around the theme of memories.

"I want to take the judges on a journey through my life," he said.

His first course was scallop and habanero leche de tigre (citrus marinade) with breadfruit and nori tuile, inspired by a dish he prepared during a job interview with the late James Kent, founder of Saga Hospitality Group. Garcia, an executive chef with the New York-based restaurant group, is in the process of opening Saga's newest restaurant, Time & Tide.

Garcia's second course was smoked mussels with plantains and cabbage, smoked mussel mayo and fine herbes puree. His third course was spiny lobster with salsa macha, squash, persimmon and chaaza sauce.

"I'm telling the story of the first dish that my wife made for me," he told the judges regarding the lobster dish. "I remember it like it was yesterday."

Dessert was cantaloupe piragua con leche, a melon sorbet with avocado yogurt, candied seaweed and condensed milk.

"As a kid, my grandfather would pick me up from school and we would always get something sweet before he took me home," he told the judges, "and it was traditionally a piragua, which is a really classic Puerto Rican shaved ice."

Garcia plans to use his winnings — $303,000, the most ever won on the show — to build a home with his wife.

"Being the first Puerto Rican, Dominican, Muslim Top Chef is incredible," he said. "It just feels good to put up the food I want to put up, and I'm just proud of myself."

Where To Watch The Bikeriders: Showtimes & Streaming Status

10 best movies like the bikeriders, “low-hanging fruit”: the bikeriders director is over comparisons to martin scorsese’s 1990 crime drama.

  • Lyon's photography of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club inspired the film The Bikeriders, with Lyon even becoming a member himself.
  • Lyon's work extended beyond The Bikeriders, focusing on socioeconomic issues, prisoners, and civil rights movements.
  • Lyon's accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship and being inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame.

Danny Lyon, whose work served as the basis of The Bikeriders , enjoyed a long career beyond the events of the film. After spending several years traveling with and photographing the Outlaws Motorcycle Club, Lyon's original work was published in a 1968 photo book titled The Bikeriders . As an artist, Lyon is known for immersing himself in his subject , even becoming a full Outlaw member from 1966-1967. His photography and recorded interviews during this time helped inform the acting of The Bikeriders ’ cast and the production team’s greater understanding of The Bikeriders ’ cultural context .

Lyon's influence on The Bikeriders film is evident. He even appears as a character, played by Mike Faist, who self-referentially gathers material on the biker subculture in 1960s Chicago. The Bikeriders ’ post-credit photos showcase some of Lyon’s work, using real photographs from his original publication. This homage allows audiences to see how faithful some movie scenes are in recreating and honoring Lyon’s original work. Though The Bikeriders is the most famous of Lyon’s collections, it's worth noting that he had a prosperous career after the publication of the film's namesake.

Tom Hardy and Austin Butler's biker movie is here, and there are different options for where to watch The Bikeriders in theaters or on streaming.

Danny Lyon Made Many More Books After The Bikeriders

The bikeriders was just the start of lyon’s decades-long career.

Lyon produced several other books after The Bikeriders . His subsequent work, Conversations With The Dead , showcased the life of inmates in Texas prisons. As with his immersion in The Bikeriders , Lyon spent multiple years observing and photographing prisoners for the project. Much of Lyon’s work revolves around socioeconomic issues and institutionalized oppression . Lyon's other projects include an exploration of the construction of Manhattan and images of the Civil Rights Movement, with which Lyon was deeply involved. Throughout his career, Lyon also produced several semi-narrative short films, including Social Services 127 , Los Niños Abandonados , and Little Boy .

Danny Lyon Became An Award-Winning Photojournalist

Lyon’s work can be found in many famous museums.

Lyon gained distinctions for his documentary work, earning several important photography awards. Just after the publication of The Bikeriders, Lyon was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in photography in 1969 and received a second fellowship in 1978. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from The Art Institute of Boston in 1995. In 2022, Lyon was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame . His work is part of the permanent collections of multiple prominent institutions, such as the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian Institute.

Inspired by his work in Middle America, Lyon built a house in New Mexico, where he’s lived since 1970. Lyon continues to work, with his new book This is My Life I’m Talking About releasing in 2024 . While The Bikeriders might be the first of his works adapted to film, many of his other publications share similar themes and messaging. If The Bikeriders is as successful as initial reviews suggest, there might be potential for Lyon's later work to be adapted to film as well. As an influential figure in literature, film, and photography, Lyon's legacy promises enduring relevance in visual storytelling.

The Bikeriders will be available to stream on Peacock after its theatrical run.

The Bikeriders

The Bikeriders tells the story of a 1960s Midwestern motorcycle club, the Vandals. Through the eyes of Kathy, played by Jodie Comer, the film explores the club's evolution from a group of local outsiders to a dangerous gang.

The Top Chef Final 3 Reflect On Their Journey To The Finale - Exclusive

W e knew that season 21 of " Top Chef " would come with some fun and interesting twists . But we never could have imagined a season full of fire bombs, meat raffles, extra Cheftestants, and the threat of a double elimination. Set those unique challenges in bucolic, the show's filming location, add in a brand-new host in Kristen Kish , and you have one exciting season.

While the season started back in March with 15 chefs, after 13 weeks and several elimination challenges, we're down to the final three: chefs Danny Garcia, Daniel "Dan" Jacobs, and Savannah Miller. These three chefs have won Quickfires, scored immunity, and are each leaving with several thousand dollars in their pockets. But with every high comes a low. Each of these chefs have also found themselves on the bottom a few times and Miller even had to pay an unexpected visit to urgent care. Each pushed through, and now, only one more cook stands between them and the title of Top Chef.

Before tonight's finale we were lucky enough to sit down with the three chefs and discuss how they got here, what their favorite challenge of the season was, and how Kristen Kish fared in her inaugural season as host.

Daniel Jacobs Didn't Realize How Mentally Challenging Top Chef Would Be

Affectionately referred to as "uncle" or "old man" this season, Daniel "Dan" Jacobs may have been this season's oldest contestant but he neither let age nor Kennedy's disease stop him from making it to the final three. While the other chefs were caught running to the pantry every instance the timer started, Jacobs says he took the opportunity to "strategically" pick out his favorite station and really focus on "what I was doing."

Even with all that focus,  the head chef of Wisconsin's DanDan says he was still surprised at how mentally taxing the show could be. "I knew going into it, it was going to be physically demanding," the chef explains. "I don't think I ever realized how mentally challenging that this was going to be. And I think that was actually harder than anything else, was the mental aspect of the challenge."

That particular challenge didn't hinder Jacobs, though. While, of course, he is a chef first and foremost, Jacobs says he is "more of a problem solver at this point." It's a trait that paid off, as he found himself in the top three on a number of occasions. As a problem solver who was able to pivot when needed and turn a fiasco into a success, Jacobs turned out many flavorful dishes to represent his local Milwaukee in the finale.

Savannah Miller Really Connected To Several Of The Challenges

Even though Savannah Miller says she felt like an underdog when the season started, by the time of the final cook, she felt like a force to be reckoned with. Having won several Quickfire and Elimination Challenges over the past 13 weeks, she tells us that it was the competition that turned her into the contender she is.

Miller says that there were several challenges that particularly spoke to her, but two she enjoyed most were the Chaos Challenge and the Meat Raffle Quickfire. "Those were both fun ones that showed my personality and the types of dishes I like to create," she tells us.

Both of Miller's dishes were savory and saw ingredients flexed in unusual ways, which is something Miller says she really enjoys doing. "I think that taking a couple ingredients and making them shine and giving you something different ... that was something I felt really connected to."

It's those connections that allowed Miller to constantly think outside the box this season. They even helped her change things up when a dish wasn't working, because at the end of the day, Miller says it's all about putting out the best plate of food you can. "We need to pivot," she continues. "When you have that at the forefront, I think the decisions come a little bit easier."

Making Quick Decisions Was Part Of The Game For Danny Garcia

In the world of "Top Chef," time is almost as important as the dish you make. There's a time limit on everything, from the Quickfire Challenge to grocery shopping to the Elimination Challenge. If you don't know how to navigate the ticking clock, you'll find yourself facing elimination.

Several chefs over the years have discovered that time is not their friend, but Danny Garcia, the Puerto Rican-Dominican chef from Brooklyn, isn't one of them. Garcia has been cooking for over a decade. As an alum of the French Laundry and with experience at the Bocuse d'Or, he says he understands how to move with the clock in mind.

"We've all cooked for a really long time, so you know how to make fast decisions," Garcia explains. "Sometimes they're good decisions and sometimes they're not the best. But you instinctually know as a chef, how to make these reactionary decisions."

Throughout the season, those rapid choices were been beneficial more times than not. Garcia won several challenges including the one that secured him a spot in the finale. It's all about adapting, Garcia tells us. If you hesitate you're done. Luckily not one of the final three had a hesitation problem. "The three people that [are] there, [are] there for a reason," the chef adds emphatically.

Kristen Kish Made The Show's Process Easier For The Chefs

When Padma Lakshmi bid adieu after 20 seasons, fans wondered who would take her place. But the producers didn't have to look far; they plucked someone from the "Top Chef" family: Kristen Kish. A "Top Chef" winner herself, the host imbued a sense of calm over the competition, attributable to the high and low experience she shared from having once been on the Cheftestant side of the table.

"It was great being able to have the influence of someone who's been in our shoes, who's done what we've done, and understands," Danny Garcia says. For Savannah Miller, is was comforting that that the new host was experiencing the show on a similar level to the chefs.

"Tom [Colicchio] and Gail [Simmons] have been queuing it so long," says Miller. "They know the drill. Seeing Kristen have these moments very early on of figuring out where her place was, and the nerves that she had as well, I think it kind of humanized her." Those moments had a real impact on the contestants. "It made the whole process easier to be vulnerable and honest about your own emotions," Miller tells. "Because the host of the show is also doing something for the first time."

Dan Jacobs adds that being a part of Kish's inaugural run is memorable for everyone involved. "I feel honored to have been there for her first season," he says. "It was great. I mean, she'll never forget any of us."

The Indigenous Challenge Was A Favorite Among The Chefs

There were so many fun and interesting Elimination Challenges throughout the season, from dining festivals to the Tabletop Challenge. Yet the final three agree that their favorite of the season was the Indigenous Challenge.

During this particular trial, the chefs had to create a dish using only indigenous ingredients, as a way to honor Milwaukee, or "the good land." Each chefs tell us that they appreciated having to think outside the box and go without ingredients that are considered "standard" in the kitchen and every day life. Danny Garcia explains that instead of shopping at Whole Foods and "buying this mindless product, there was heart and soul for every ingredient that they shared with us."

Both Dan Jacobs and Savannah Miller agree with Garcia, saying that they cherished being able to showcase a cuisine that should be more widely seen and tasted. Miller won the challenge with her squash and maple jelly cake, while Jacobs' sunflower and goose dish also landed him the top three.

"It literally is the one I'm most proud of doing the whole season," Jacobs exudes. He's so proud of that sunflower dish in fact, it's currently on the menu at his restaurant, EsterEv. While he's made a few changes replacing the goose with rabbit and the  Matsutake mushrooms with porcinis, since Matsutakes aren't currently in season, the dish is still a big hit among his guests. "It's a real great time and place dish, and it's got a great story," Jacobs says.

The season 21 finale of "Top Chef" premiers tonight, June 19th at 9 p.m. EST. Watch it on Bravo, or stream it on Peacock.
