Filipinos are fun-loving people! It’s not unusual for them to celebrate almost every life’s milestones, even the smallest ones. Parties are typically loaded with various kinds of foods enough for all the guests and even their takeaways popularly referred to by the locals as “bring home”. Pinoy parties are even made more fun with party games.

1 | Trip to Jerusalem

Trip to Jerusalem can be played both indoors and outdoors best played by two or more people.

The game is played by arranging chairs in a circle. The number of chairs should be one less than the number of players. So if there are 10 players, there should be 9 chairs. When the music starts, the players should dance while going around the chairs. Each player must take a seat as soon as the music stops. The one who wasn’t able to get a seat is eliminated. A chair is then removed until there’s only one left for two players to fight for. The player who gets the last chair wins.

2 | Longest Line

Longest Line is best played in a wide space and by at least two teams. 

The goal of the game is to make a longest line out of the items found on the body of the group members. Players are divided into groups of equal size. They are given time, typically five minutes, to make a line using items such as shoes, slippers, belts, shirts, pants, handkerchief, and whatever is found on the body of the member. The one who makes the longest line within the allotted time wins.

3 | Bring Me

Bring Me can be played both indoors and outdoors best played by two or more people.

Also called “Give Me What I Want”, the game requires the player to bring to the host whatever he/she wants. It starts with the host saying “Bring me + item wanted”. The player who brings the item first gets the prize. The most popular items often asked include white hair, peso bills, and curly hair among others. 

4 | Statue Dance

Statue Dance can be played both indoors and outdoors best played by two or more people.

Similar to Trip to Jerusalem, this game also involves music and dancing. When the music plays, the players must dance and must freeze once it stops. Those who are unable to remain still get eliminated. The game continues until there’s only one person left who will be declared as the winner. To make the game more challenging, the mechanics are reversed. The players should dance when there’s no music and must freeze once it plays. 

5 | Paper Dance

Paper Dance can be played both indoors and outdoors played by partners.

The game requires a piece of paper, typically newspaper, and like Trip to Jerusalem, it involves music and dancing as well. Players are grouped into twos and must dance when the music is being played. Once the music stops, players must step on the paper and must stay that way until the music is played again. The couple whose feet are touching the ground is eliminated. The newspaper is then folded in half every round so it gets smaller and smaller. The last team standing is declared the winner.

6 | pabitin.

Pabitin can be played both indoors and outdoors with no maximum number of players although it is best to have separate rounds for shorter players and taller ones.

This game involves a suspended bamboo lattice tied with goodies which is lowered up and down to the eager players standing underneath. The players will then grab the goodies and get to keep whatever they could get. While the game is exciting, it can become quite dangerous when some players start to get violent just to get what s/he is aiming for.

7 | Pukpok Palayok

Pukpok Palayok is best played outdoors with no maximum number of players.

The local version of the piñata, pukpok palayok involves a clay pot called palayok instead of papier-mâché. The player is positioned a few meters away from the pot, gets blindfolded, spun around, and must walk towards the pot. The crowd distracts and confuses the player by yelling directions. Each player is given one to three chances to hit the pot. If the player missed it, s/he will have to go back in line and wait for her/his turn to try again. If the player hits the pot, the audience can get the goodies like candies, coins, and toys falling from the pot. The player who broke the pot is declared a winner and gets a prize.

8 | Tomato Dance

Tomato Dance can be played both indoors and outdoors played by partners.

The game requires partners to dance with a big, red tomato pressed between their faces. Partners must prevent the tomato from falling to the ground or from disintegrating else they’ll be eliminated. The last team standing is declared as the winner.

9 | Egg Relay

Egg Relay can be played both indoors and outdoors by at least two teams.

To play this game, players are divided into groups of equal size. The first player will then carry their egg on the spoon from the starting to a turnaround point and back again. The egg is then passed off to the next teammate who takes their turn. Players must be careful not to let the egg fall off the spoon else they will be required to stop, pick up the egg, and start again. The team who completes the relay first is declared as the winner. 

10 | Pop the Balloon

Pop the Balloon can be played both indoors and outdoors by at least two teams.

Players are divided into groups of equal size. Each player is given a balloon and each team has a chair positioned a few meters away from the starting line. As soon as the go signal is given, the first player of the team runs to the chair, sits on it to pop the balloon, and return to the team so the next players can take their turn. The first team to pop all their balloons is declared as the winner.

In another version of the game, a player sits on the chair so the first player can pop the balloon by sitting on his/her lap. Once the first player popped the balloon, s/he will replace the player sitting on the chair. With the first player sitting on the chair, the second will then pop the balloon by sitting on the lap of the first player. The process is repeated until every member of the team has their balloon popped.

Yet another version, one player leans on the chair while another place the balloon in between them so together they can pop the balloon while standing.

While these games are commonly played by children during birthdays and fiestas, they are played by adults as well during Christmas parties, reunions, team-building activities, and others.  Just one more reason why … “It’s More Fun in the Philippines”.

Playing Musical Chairs

• Count how many players you have and subtract 1. Then, group that many chairs together in a circle in a large space with the seats facing outward.
• Play music and have the players move around the chairs. When the music stops, players must sit in a chair and the player left standing is out.
• Continue playing music and removing a chair each round until only 1 player remains.

How Many Players Do You Need for Musical Chairs?

To make the game fun, it’s best to play with at least 5 to 10 children. The bigger the group, the better. 

If you’re playing with toddlers or young preschoolers, it’s ok to play with just a few so you can teach them the concept of dancing, listening for the music to stop and quickly finding a chair to sit on. 

For toddlers, it is better not to remove a chair on each round as they may not understand the concept of games with rules yet.

How do you play a game of musical chairs? 

• To play Musical Chairs, you just need children, chairs and music!
• The chairs are placed in a circle, usually facing outwards.
• You’ll need one chair for every child.
• The adult plays some music which the children dance freely to, and one chair is removed from the circle.
• When the music stops, the children have to sit on a chair as quickly as possible.
• Whoever doesn’t find a chair is out and must wait on the side.

• Then, start a new round.

How do you make musical chairs fun? Try these Musical Chairs variations to suit different ages and play different versions.

• Involve the children who are out – Allow the child who is out to remove one chair in the next round so that the child doesn’t have to immediately exit the game.
• Change the rules for toddlers – Don’t remove chairs so toddlers can be involved in every round.
• Face inwards – To get the children facing each other and therefore interacting more, face the chairs inwards and dance inside the circle.
• Place chairs back to back – Instead of making a circle with the chairs, place them back to back in two rows.

• Players are gathered in a circle around the chairs

A row of chairs is placed in the center of the room so that they face alternately in opposite directions one chair to one side the next to the opposite side etc. There should be one chair less than the number of players. The game is most interesting when played with musical accompaniment.

The game starts with all the players seated in the row of chairs except one. This odd one is the leader and his first object is to recruit the players for his trip to “Jerusalem.” He carries a cane and walks around the row repeating “Im going to Jerusalem Im going to Jerusalem ” in singsong. Every few moments he stops at his discretion and knocks with his cane on the floor behind the chair of some player. Immediately the player thus summoned rises from his chair and follows the leader sometimes having a lively scramble to encircle the row of chairs and catch up with him. The next player knocked for follows this one and so on until all are moving around in single file. The leader may reverse his direction at pleasure. This general hurry and confusion for the start may with a resourceful leader add much to the sport of the game.

When the players are all recruited they continue to march around the row of chairs the main object of the game being the scramble for seats when the music stops or upon some other signal to sit if there be no music.

The musician will add to the interest of the game by varying the time of the march from slow and stately time to “double quick.” At any moment after all the players are marching the music may stop suddenly. Whenever this happens the players all scramble for seats. There will be one odd player left without a seat. This player is thenceforth out of the game and retires to one end of the room taking with him one of the chairs. This continues until there are only two players encircling one chair and the one who secures it wins.

Where two players reach a chair at nearly the same time the chair belongs to the one who first reached it or who is sitting more fully on it. Sitting on the arm of a chair does not count nor touching it with the hands or knees.

FOR THE GYMNASIUM.–When played in a gymnasium a row of gymnasium stools may be used instead of chairs and the gathering up of the players omitted the game starting with the stools empty.

FOR THE SCHOOLROOM.–When played in the schoolroom the game starts with all of the players ready to march the first part of the game in which they are recruited being omitted. The class should march in serpentine form up one aisle and down the next etc. instead of encircling a row of seats. There should be for a large class from one to six less seats than the number of players. For instance one seat should be counted out in each row or each alternate row. The seat that is not in play may be designated by turning it up if of that variety and by placing a book on the desk belonging to it.

Wherever played the game may be carried on without music simply by the leader or teacher beating time and stopping when players are to sit or he may give a signal or a command to “Sit “

Game description.

This classic game is known by just about everybody and of course, can’t be missed at any birthday party. Because this game is known worldwide, it has many names and just as many variations. For example: Like with the original game, everybody is sitting in a circle. The difference, every child has a hat. Except one. When the music starts to play, the hat is quickly passed on from one person to the next. This can be neighbour to neighbour or randomly. When the music stops, the child without a hat has to leave the game. This is repeated until there are only two kids left who play against each other.

The hats are not passed on by hand but have to put on the neighbour’s head.

Not important. The last wins the game.
