An Awesome Tour

"This was our first trip to the Louvre. We were lucky enough to be the only people in the tour group, and were even more fortunate that Violette was our tour guide. She explained the history of the Louvre and the art pieces in a fascinating, engaging way. Violette really knows her facts! We would highly recommend Violette and LivTours to anyone interested in touring the Louvre."

Informative but, also, fun!

"Our favorite part was meeting our tour guide, Oliver. Oliver was not only informational & engaging, but was fun during our tour to around the Louvre and to see Mona Lisa. "

Perfect Louvre Highlights

"We toured the Louvre with another couple and our guide, Adam. Wow! LivTours is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about art history. Adam was able to separate the large aspects of the Louvre into smaller pieces so that we saw both highlights, like the beautiful Mona Lisa, and also hidden gems. This was exactly what we were looking for with this tour. I highly recommend LivTours and Adam!"

secrets of the louvre museum tour with mona lisa

‘Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass’ – the Louvre’s first virtual reality project – uses the latest scientific research on Leonardo da Vinci, his creative processes and his painting techniques.

The first VR experience of the Mona Lisa

When a painting is as famous as the Mona Lisa, how can you engage with it on a personal level – get through the barrier of fame to discover its inner secrets? This VR experience is a means of doing just that. ‘The Mona Lisa is fated never to be seen again the way she should be, i.e. face to face. That’s the price of success; like any celebrity, as soon as she appears, everyone wants to see her!’ says Vincent Delieuvin, co-curator of the 2020 Leonardo da Vinci show.

This immersive VR experience, part of the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition in 2020, is also available on smartphone.

' Like any celebrity, as soon as she appears, everyone wants to see her! '

Vincent Delieuvin

The woman behind the painting

What remains to be said about the Mona Lisa? How can we move beyond the myths about this ultra-famous artwork? ‘Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass’ sets out to dispel the folklore and tell the real story. This eight-minute VR experience is based on the knowledge compiled by exhibition curators Louis Frank and Vincent Delieuvin after a decade of research in preparation for the landmark 2020 exhibition.

The experience begins in the Salle des États in today’s Louvre, face to face with the painting of the Mona Lisa. It then takes us on a journey back in time to the original setting, where we meet the real woman da Vinci painted! Mona Lisa – or Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo – comes to life, and shows us how her outfit was made, how her hair was styled...

The secrets of ‘sfumato’

Leonardo da Vinci used some specific techniques that have contributed to his fame but are not necessarily understood. The VR experience gives a detailed view of his painting processes and shows how they brought his work to life. We also find ourselves in the loggia where Mona Lisa might have been sitting when she was painted. ‘We took our inspiration for the loggia from a drawing by Leonardo, an extraordinary villa with a belvedere [and placed it] above the large landscape in the painting. And a surprise awaits you at the end!’ says Louis Frank, co-curator of the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition in 2020.

How To See the Mona Lisa in 2024

Sean Finelli Last Updated: October 29, 2023

Since the autumn of 2019, the Louvre museum has organized a remarkable exhibition dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci. The Mona Lisa has remained an enigma for art historians since the 16th century. Visiting the Mona Lisa can be quite a feat, as the Louvre draws in about 15,000 visitors per day. Here’s how to see the Mona Lisa in Paris and some tips to avoid the crowds.

Pro Tip: Planning to see the Mona Lisa at the Louvre in Paris? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you’re in the city. Check out our guide to Paris for more planning resources, our top Louvre tours for a memorable trip, and how to visit the Louvre .

The Star of the Louvre

The Mona Lisa is one of the most iconic portraits in history. The painting was exhibited in the Palace of Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV, and was, therefore, part of the royal collections. She took up residence in the Louvre in 1804.

To see the Mona Lisa , you’ll be visiting the Louvre—the largest single-complex museum in the world at 800,000 square feet (73,000 square meters) with one of the most impressive collections in the world. For a more comprehensive guide, check out how to visit the Louvre .

Louvre Hours and Tickets

The Louvre is open nearly every day of the year from 9 am to 6 pm, except on Tuesdays when the museum is closed. The museum also has a night opening on Fridays where the museum stays open until 9:45 pm.

Keep in mind that the Louvre is closed on January 1, May 1, and December 25. The lines can be quite long. That’s why we recommend taking a guided tour that will get you skip-the-line access, helping you avoid some of the crowds.

Opening Hours:

  • Monday: 9 am – 6 pm
  • Tuesday: Closed
  • Wednesday: 9 am – 6 pm
  • Thursday: 9 am – 6 pm
  • Friday: 9 am – 9:45 pm
  • Saturday: 9 am – 6 pm
  • Sunday: 9 am – 6 pm

Pro Tip: If you can, try to visit the Louvre in the evening for a more intimate experience. It’s typically less busy, giving you a chance to view the exhibits longer.

You can buy tickets at the museum for €15 or online for €17. Admission is free for anyone under 18 with an official ID document and residents of the European Economic Area under 26 with an official certificate of residence or valid ID document.

Mona Lisa Facts

mona lisa crowds

Who Was the Mona Lisa?

According to the most probable hypothesis, the mysterious Mona Lisa was Lisa Gherardini, wife of wealthy Florentine cloth merchant Francesco del Giocondo. The portrait represents her sitting in a loggia, a kind of balcony. Behind her, you can see a landscape with valleys, a river, and a bridge.

Enigmatic Eyes

What is the Mona Lisa looking at? Do you have the impression that she is staring at you? It is an optical illusion, called the “Mona Lisa effect.” No matter where you stand in the room, no matter what the angle is, the audience thinks that the Mona Lisa is staring at them.

Mona Lisa’s Smile

The Renaissance is the appearance of a new genre: the portrait and the expression of personality. The Mona Lisa represents a woman but is also the portrait of an expression. Her smile is a true enigma in the history of art.

Leonardo da Vinci was one of the precursors of portraits with a smile. The reason the smile seems so fascinating is that it is in contrast with the desolate landscape in the background.

The Robbery

The work of art became popular with the general public when it was stolen from the Louvre in 1911. The portrait was found, and the man responsible for the robbery was an Italian named Vincenzo Peruggia. He wanted to restore the work to his native country.

One of our best Louvre guides, Veronique Marie, says: “The man who stole the Mona Lisa believed that Napoleon stole the painting in the first place. This was not true, the Mona Lisa was bought. But this opinion made Peruggia inclined to bring the Mona Lisa back to Italy.”

Mona Lisa Tours

The best way to see the Mona Lisa is in a skip-the-line guided Louvre tour . Our passionate guide will share the secrets of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa , a work of art that has long intrigued those who look upon her. On our tours, we’ll head immediately to the Mona Lisa before seeing anything else to make sure you see the masterpiece with the least amount of crowds

The Secrets of Mona Lisa

secrets of the louvre museum tour with mona lisa

June 8, 2015

- September 7, 2015

Second Floor Temporary Exhibition Galleries

Whether or not you have been lucky enough to admire Mona Lisa herself in Paris, you'll feel privileged to see her in a context few others will ever have the opportunity to enjoy. Marvel at the intricate details that make Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa the icon that she is as you come to truly appreciate the beauty, complexity, and mysteries of the world's most famous painting.

Since its installation at the Louvre in 1797, Mona Lisa has been on permanent display, removed only when war threatened its safety, and it traveled to New York, Washington DC, Tokyo, and Moscow. In an unprecedented act of generosity, the French government and the Louvre Museum gave French scientific engineer and examiner of fine art, Pascal Cotte, permission to not only remove Mona Lisa from the wall, but to take it out of its frame and scientifically analyze it. What he found will amaze and excite art connoisseurs and amateurs alike. Cotte's analysis, conducted over two years, has revealed dozens of secrets about history's most elusive work of art, all verified and approved by Louvre Museum curators.

The Secrets of Mona Lisa showcases Cotte's studies and explores 25 of his most compelling revelations, illustrated by 40 super-magnified, high-resolution sectional images exploring every aspect of the work. Other highlights include the only 360 degree exact replica ever made, original archives and memorabilia, and a giant infra-red image exposing secrets of the painting never before known.

This exhibition, a unique combination of science and art, has been created by Grande Exhibitions and Pascal Cotte, France.
