Can someone explain the blackjack tournament to me?

By bigmacfan , May 17, 2004 in Carnival Cruise Lines

I have seen signs posted regarding a blackjack tournament on board and have seen people on here discussing that a tournament is the most cost effective way to play.

So...how does that work? Do you pay the entry fee for the pleasure of participating and then pay for all of your bets like you would playing without the tournament OR does your entry fee cover so many hands of blackjack??

Pay your $20 entry fee. You get a set amount of chips to play seven hands. I believe it is $1000 in chips. At the end of seven hands the total amount of chips you have left is your score. The top seven scores return to the final table and play another seven hands to determine the winner. Totals from previous rounds do not carry over. You may enter as often as you like. The winner gets $500.

Perfect description - right on every detail, based on what they just had on the Pride last week.

FYI the other casino tournament on board is the slot tournament. Pay a $20 fee at the casino cashier during the time frame for the main round of the tournament. Get a card that shows your entry. Walk to the bank of slots and wait for the next round. Sit down at whatever machine is available, and the host will take your card and write down your name. There is a white board nearby with the top 12 player scores.

These machines (at least on the Pride) are 3 coin quarter machines, all identical in payoffs. You are given 300 credits, and automatically play 3 credits per pull for 100 pulls. Highest jackpot win for a single pull is 5,000 credits. Whatever the total is on the "winner paid" readout (I think that's the name) at the end of your 100 pulls is your final total. Most people in the final round average 6,000 or higher, so you'll need to either have a consistent number of medium hits, or one or two jackpots.

Top 12 scored(the number of slot machines in that tournament "bank" of machines) come back for the final round for another 100 pulls. Scores are reset to zero. Top prize is $500. There are prizes for 2nd and 3rd, and usually some prize of some kind for everyone in the tournament.

One thing to note in BOTH of these tournaments. You can enter more than once. Just head back to the cashier and buy another entry, then head back into line and play again. I saw several people play, get their name on the board, then wait nearby...if their score dropped off the board, they immediately go purchase another entry and play again.

When I won the slot tournament, they made me wear a set of "FLASHING" beads around my neck and to this day (2 years later) they actually still work! I also got the "ship on a stick" for winning plus the $500.00!

Thanks for the info on the Black Jack Tournaments, I may give that a try on our next cruise!

My wife, who had NEVER played Blackjack, entered the tournament on the Miracle and ended up in the final 7. She didn't win but it just goes to show that you don't have to be an experienced player. I entered the 2nd Blackjack tournament and ended up with 2nd place. I got a tote, t-shirt, cards, key chains, etc. It was fun!

Can anyone tell me the minimum table bets for Blackjack during non-tournament play? Do they have $2.00 or $5.00 tables?

Again I can only speak for the Pride, but the lowest minimum on any blackjack table that I saw was $5, and that was rare in itself.

Personally I do not mind the higher table minimums. It helps to keep the riff-raff and the ones who haven't a clue how to play off the tables.

Every book I have read about BJ says to hit a 12 when the dealer is showing a 12 or 13. The logic (?) is that most of the cards in the shoe will not make you bust. I get a lot of dirty looks, and sometimes worse, when I do it, but it works more often than not.

As far as the tournaments go: from playing/watching, it is obvious that a player has to be extremely aggressive to have any chance of winning. This means splitting 10's, doubling on any total 11 or less when the dealer is showing a 4,5 or 6, and breaking a bunch of other rules.

The Glory had $5 blackjack tables available at all times when I was on board. no problem getting seats either.

jgmpuma.... hitting on 12 or 13 isn't always bad... but if you are the last seat on the table and everyone else holds on a low hand, and the dealer is showing a low card, 9 out of 10 times it seems like that person busts and the dealer wins! Odds are odds. I just like to know that the people at the table where I am playing or playing with me and not against me. I am definately an aggressive player and have even split 10's ... but I have learned that this also makes other players mad at me! oh well. as long as I am winning who cares right!!!!! I think it also depends on whether or not you are playing on a standard deck or 5 decks in a shoe.

Tom... some may view it this way. In fact, why split the 2nd best hand in blackjack, right? That's what they say anyway. My DH hates it when I do that and I don't do it very often. I have run into some big time luck, and enjoy the rewards of the risk. 99% of the time "lady luck" has been good to me.

Is daytime play "cheaper" then night time?

I have experienced $1 minimums on roulete during the day but at night it goes to 5 bucks. Is this still true?

They will occasionally have lower minimums during the day at sea. These will be posted in the Capers.

The typical roulette minimums are $1 inside and $5 outside, even at night.

All of the local casinos use six-deck shoes, so what the other players are showing doesn't tell you very much. I, too, have committed the cardinal sin of splitting 10's, but only at a $2 table (in Biloxi, MS) and with only intoxicated novices around me, so no one cared. The first time I did it, I ended up with four hands of two face cards each (that was the max number of splits).

The worst confrontation I ever experienced was splitting 9's against a five. The woman next to me got very hostile: a security guard had to calm her down.

I love Blackjack, as a matter of fact DH and I along with another couple took a little road trip to Metropolis IL Saturday. I played and had a great time. Anyway,,,

Does the Sensation have a blackjack table where you can place a side bet of $1 and if you hit a blackjack, you can spin a wheel for additional money?

I played this game on the Fantasy a couple of years ago. I hope the Sensation also offers this.

I'm not the best blackjack player at sea by any means and it anoys me when other players get soooo upset about a wrong move I may make, like hitting when I shouldn't or splitting when I probably shouldn't.

This is a cruise people not Las vegas. Its all for fun and about having a good time. I for one did not book my cruise in hopes of wining enough money at the ships casino to pay it off.

I say everyone should chill and serious gambelers should go to the casinos on land.

This is so funny...The odds of someone's incorrect (or correct) play having a negative or positive effect on the dealer's draw are the same. Their decision will determine what card in the deck will come up next, but not what that card will actually be. If the person makes a wrong decision but it causes the dealer to go bust, is everybody happy??

candigirl41

candigirl41

Just my two cents. I was hitting on 12, which came up often. I was the last seat and some guy got really mad at me when I got ten and then the dealer didn't bust. I just looked at him and said don't take it personally. Well I am losing money, if you are that serious about it trade places with me. I wasn't supposed to say anything when he hit on 12, because he wasn't the last seat. Like someone else said every card will have an impact down the line. I will hit 12 anytime the dealer is showing a face card. If I were there to make money I wouldn't be there in the first place. This is why I am now an avid 3 card poker fan. My cards don't affect anyone else. But it gets a bit spendy when you do both bets. $15.00 each hand is just a little too much. I got three 6's once in Las Vegas and played a couple more hands and left. Can't please everyone.

To answer a previous poster's question I have seen the blackjack wheel on all the Carnival ships I have sailed on. There is a good chance that the Sensation will have one for you to play. Usually it is on a $5 table.

Cruise ship tournaments

Entered one of those $25 buy in things on a cruise a few years ago and realized I had no idea of a betting strategy for a 7-hand tournament. Going again later this year and wondering if anyone has a solid strategy for something like this. Guess I could just max out from hand one and either make it or break it.

KenSmith

Administrator

Going max from hand one is the best strategy for these. If the prior scores are posted, and it's late in the day, you could back off once you get to a first place score. Otherwise, you're probably best served by making seven max bets, assuming you last that long.

Well-Known Member

I have been on a couple of these tournament. Won first price once $300 and got knock out in the first round in the other. The woman who never played BJ in her life won the first prize. Just go in and have a blast and enjoy yourself.

I agree. It's definitely not the place for "basic strategy". Too many people in those tournaments that have never played, or have only played a couple of times. If you stick with the sensible approach, you may have chips left at the end of your 7 hands, but unless Lady Luck is on your side - - you won't be at the next round. Stragegy at the last table if you are lucky enough to be there is to save back some chips. My wife won the tourney on our last cruise simply by having some chips left on round 6. Everyone else went all-in and lost to a dealer lucky draw to 21. She held back and took the chance that she would at least be left with chips.

Question for the Blackjack Tournament Pros! We are now VIP and understand we will get a voucher to play in the Blackjack Tournament on our upcoming Miracle Cruise.

In general, what are the rules for the Tournament? How many hands are you dealt? Any "strategies" such as betting amounts for each hand or what round to play?

Thank you in advance for the feedback. Want to win the big one!

You have your choice, one free slot or blackjack tournament.

You need to bet big to have a chance, but if you bet big you stand a big chance of running out of chips. You started with I think $1000 of chips?

big_duck

Each round consists of 7 hands.

Everyone starts with the same amount of "chips".

Highest amount of "chips" won, regardless of round played sit at the final table.

Bet big or stay at home. I always believed in avoiding busting at all costs and pray the dealer does. So far this strategy has been unsuccessful. :(

I almost didnt make it the 7 rounds without busting. lol

You have to bet big until the final round .. or there will be no final round. I always agree with you.

golfadj

No point in not betting big as having a handful of chips at the end of your round a nd not enough to get into finals is a waste.

Last time top 7 finishers got into finals and no wildcard.

OP: I received free entries to both the black jack and slot tournaments on my last cruise on the Elation as a Platinum passanger. It was not one or the other. Got knocked out of both in the first rounds. :(

I usually give my freebee ticket to my wife ... but one cruise I decided to use it on Blackjack. I won the qualifying. At the finals I as given the choice of which space to take .. and there were so many people smushing (technical term) around the same space I won the prelim, I took the end one where I was standing. I was put out first...lol. And the guy who was in the center space I won the qualifying on won the whole thing.

Lesson....ah, nuttin..just don't be a whiner. :D

Not dificult, I simply ask and showed my card at the cashiers cage in the Casino.

You only get one entry per person but normally there are 2 people per cabin so you end up with two.

Is it VIP or being Platinum that gives you this benefit. we only have 7 cruises and not yet Platinum BUT always book a cat 12 suite thus being VIP? so should i expect this or not? and if i dont get it should I ask?

Relax@Sea

Platinum only

DaDivaMom

It's generally only Platinum and then there are Casino VIPs. On our Freedom cruise we actually had double entry for each of the adult members of our family due to being platinum and via the Casino. Our 18 year old is a blackjack guru. (He's a ranked BJ player)

Not only do you have to have the largest pot at the end of the hand it has to be the largest all day. Our son is a programming/math geek and has his strategies on when it is best to play. They have implemented a new Carnival Fun Pairs so it is not true blackjack anymore and that cost him the tournament this last time. He had the highest count, he was next to last position, last guy had 50 bucks no way to win BUT he had a 4 on fun pair and a 4 came up paid out whatever it was and he won. Pure luck, no strategy. He was sort of pissed but thems the breaks. Casino boss offered him a drink, I was like whoa...he's 18!

I let him play all my entries and it's never been a problem. I think it's only 20 bucks a hand.

Hope that helps.

I think the best strategy is not to play until the end. Then you know what you need to do.

You don't necessarily have to slam all of your chips in there on the first hand. I've made a bunch of the "final tables" but only won 1. the position aspect of the final makes it play more like an actual blackjack tournament and sometimes it's hard to account for the crazy stuff other people are going to do. lol.

I have come to the conclusion it is best to play at the end so you know what you need to have to make the finals.

Do find some strategies people use to be incredible. Last time a couple got in at least 5x each (20 per) to win 500.

Bunch of us seeing this just shook our heads.

finoky

I have never made it to hand 7. Last week I was out in hand 4. Didn't help that the dealer went 20, 21, 20, 21.

nanuak

I made it to the semis but didn't win the final. I got a t-shirt, lithograph and something else I can't seem to remember. I had a blast playing and I did very well that year in the casino.

It often takes between 3-5,000 in chips to make it to the final table. Thus you must realize that, by starting with 1,000 in chips and only 7 hands to play, there is not much room for conservative betting in the qualifying rounds. I usually put up between 1/3 to 1/2 of my chips on each bet early on. You have to leave back enough to pounce on the double and split opportunities! I have won the tournament about 5 times now -- with most of those thanks to the free entry. Now THAT is a perk which can pay off nicely!

Even though I have won a few times, I have played MANY times. I use my free entry, then Cheryl's. I might invest another $20 to $40 in order to get on the board, but no more than that. I often see people throwing $20's down, one after another, just to get on the board --- not a good strategy IMHO given the top prize, and what the odds are to begin with. Playing the way I do, I often am without chips by the 3rd or 4th hand. Yes, it does not feel good to be "chipless", but it's better than being conservative and not having enough to get to the finals!

the last tournament I was in, you got 500 in chips and $750 got in the final.

So betting big isn't necessarily the way to go

Did you win?

I have NEVER, in dozens of cruises, seen anyone get into the finals with less than a couple of thousand in chips... though I am sure it can happen - especially when they (as was the case on your cruise) halve the amount of chips you start with.

Our last Carnival sailing was on the 5/29 Valor - and they still were starting you with $1,000 then. I wonder why they would change that amount?

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Posted October 18, 2011. On the Carnival Conquest last week they had a few changes on the Blackjack tournament. First was that all players started out with $1,500 in play money instead of the past $1,000. This did not seem to raise the qualifying levels as many players still busted out.
