About Country Boy Mine

Country Boy Mine was founded in 1887 and is one of the oldest and most famous mines in Summit County, Colorado. In 1991, Tomlinson Brothers, Doug and David, along with their families dreamed of restoring the collapsed mine and mine site into a historical venue!

Located in the famous French Gulch area, gold was first discovered here by a miner named French Pete in 1860. This valley was abundantly rich in minerals such as gold, silver, lead, and zinc, and it played a very meaningful role in the gold rush of Breckenridge, Colorado.

Mining was and still is an integral part of Colorado and our nation’s history. With the deterioration and disappearance of historic mines in Colorado, Country Boy Mine serves to share with people the rich mining history. Today, we welcome you to come and enjoy Country Boy Mine for its wealth of history and gold, both past and present!

Rock breaking

What is rock breaking? You will mine your own ore at 1,000 feet and then we break them open just like the Geologist do; and you get to keep it!

Active Mining!

The Capital Prize is still an active Gold Mine. You will see how we mine differently today.

Things to consider for your visit

The Capital Prize Gold Mine is a well lit and safe environment. The mine is inspected every day by staff and monitored by the Colorado Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety.

The average temperature inside the mine is 49° Fahrenheit so a light jacket and closed toe shoes are recommended.

The adit (tunnel) is driven over 1,000 feet into the mountainside for tours. The mine adit extends to 4,700 feet and work is being done to open additional tour space.

The ground is level and the ceiling is generally above 6 feet so little stooping is required.

Tours are approximately 60 minutes - please allow extra time to enjoy rock breaking, the historic sites  or a picnic lunch outside the mine.

Wheelchairs and strollers can have a difficult time in the mine due to the ore cart rail tracks and are are not allowed.

Guide to Mine Tours and Gold Panning in Colorado

Argo Gold Mine Tunnel Idaho Springs Colorado

Thanks to Colorado’s gold and silver booms, there is a rich countryside full of mining relics. A few of the former mines have been restored, and offer guided tours, some open year round, some seasonally during summer and fall.

Prospectors flocked to the Rocky Mountains, slowly stretching over nearly the entire region, looking for their fortune. First they came with wagons on stagecoach trails, then with the help of the train, towns grew quickly and the industry flourished. Despite several boom and busts, such as the Silver Panic of 1893, mining continued.

Yankee Girl Silver Mine Guston Colorado

World War One and Two increased the need for other precious metals, which were discovered in mines around the state. Many of the mining camps and town slowly faded away in the early twentieth century, turning into ghost towns . They were often plagued terrible high altitude winters and poor transportation, so residents would leave after the mines dried up for more hospitable conditions.

Today many mines still operate around the state, producing a variety of metals. Experience Colorado’s colorful past on a mine tour, or try your luck at gold panning on a local river. Founded in 1876, Colorado Mining Association is the oldest professional mining industry trade association in the whole country. They still offer career resources, training and industry oversight.

For a really in-depth dive into Colorado’s mining history, visit the National Mining Hall of Fame in Leadville. It’s open daily throughout the year, featuring a variety of historic exhibits and authentic relics.

How Noah Kahan has quietly used his tour to raise $2M for rural mental health

Noah Kahan strums his guitar on stage

Noah Kahan appeared on stage just outside of Denver, Colorado as sardonic and heartfelt as he does in his songs.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t fit all my generational trauma up here on stage,” he quipped before a set change that looked like his family’s living room from Strafford, Vermont.

Kahan has been touring his best-selling record “Stick Season” for over 200 shows (“We’re really milking this thing,” he said on stage). But the songs — many of which confront issues like depression, family trauma, substance abuse, and even the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic — remain fresh for fans.

Noah Kahan strums a guitar on stage, in front of a crowd holding up their phone flashlights

“I listen to his music every single day,” a fan, Katie Lowe, told Good Good Good at the June 25 show in Denver. “It can always be fitting. There are struggles in his songs, but somehow the music sounds upbeat. If you’re happy, it’ll go with your mood. But if you’re sad, it can offer some advice.”

What most fans might not be aware of, however, is that Kahan hopes to offer more than a soundtrack to their mental health journeys.

Behind The Busyhead Project

Last year, Kahan launched The Busyhead Project , a fundraising initiative housed under the Vermont Community Foundation that provides grant money to community organizations across the country helping to provide access to mental health support.

The goal was to raise $1 million for mental health in one year. But within the first 12 months of the project’s existence, it hit the $2 million mark.

These funds come from a portion of ticket sales, direct donations from fans, and offerings like livestream tickets to sold-out concerts that can be watched from anywhere in the world.

Noah Kahan performs on stage to a packed venue

In its first year, Busyhead provided grants to organizations Bring Change to Mind , Jack.org , Oasis Center , Project Venture , Rural Behavioral Health Institute , Upper Valley Haven , and more.

According to an annual report, not all $2 million has been distributed yet, but a little over a quarter of those funds have been shared among more than 55 organizations in North America.

“These partners were selected by Noah for their commitment to mental health awareness, with an emphasis on local impact by providing access to resources,” a press release announcing The Busyhead Project shared.

These groups reach specific communities that have historically been unable to access mental health resources.

Project Venture, for instance, works with Indigenous youth to build healthy lifestyles by connecting to culturally-significant adventures in the outdoors.

Or there’s the Rural Behavioral Health Institute, which works in Montana schools to provide universal mental health screenings for middle and high school youth. After they identify students who may need mental health support, the nonprofit helps them access quality care.

Hand-selected local mental health nonprofits are invited to come to Kahan’s shows to raise awareness about their work and receive an accompanying donation when he visits their cities, as well.

In 2023, Dallas-based Foundation 45 used Busyhead funding for its 95 support groups, which helped provide comprehensive care to 1,140 community members for free. Similarly, We Are Family in Charleston, South Carolina utilized funds to provide 1,370 hours of LGBTQ+ affirming mental health sessions to 103 youth.

From Vermont to the world stage

While a significant portion of these funds go back into the communities Kahan visits, a major motivating factor behind The Busyhead Project is to keep the singer connected to his New England roots.

“The Upper Valley Haven serves more than 10,000 individuals annually through food, shelter, service coordination, and clinical problem solving,” one of Kahan’s Vermont nonprofit partners shared in a statement. “This donation provides significant support that will allow Haven staff to help so many vulnerable members of our community. We are proud that Noah grew up in the Upper Valley and continues to support the work the Haven has done since 1980.”

In September, Kahan will play a benefit concert in Essex Junction, Vermont for mental health.

“It’s such an honor to play in my home state and help raise money and awareness for something that is so special to me,” Kahan wrote on Instagram .

Tickets for the benefit concert were sold through a lottery system, since demand for his live performances has skyrocketed with the success of hits like “Stick Season,” “Northern Attitude,” and “You’re Gonna Go Far.”

On Friday, June 27, Kahan will release a new track, performed as a duet with country star Kelsea Ballerini, called “Cowboys Cry Too.” In a snippet , Kahan sings “I grew up wishing I could close off the way my dad did, ‘cause that man never felt a damn thing he didn’t wanna feel.”

Mental health in rural communities

The openness in Kahan’s lyrics is not always the norm in rural communities, even though he has gone on record saying mental health topics were “dinner table conversations” in his own home growing up.

According to Mental Health America , fear of negative judgment for “appearing weak” often keeps people from seeking mental health help in rural areas — especially those dominated by notoriously stressful industries like farming or manufacturing.

Kahan’s hometown of Strafford, Vermont has a population about ten times smaller than the average venue he plays. And, like other rural communities in the U.S., sees a much higher suicide rate compared to large urban communities.

Small, close-knit communities also make for a lack of privacy, making it hard for people to feel like their personal matters can be kept confidential. Unfortunately, these areas also lack mental health professionals. In fact, 65% of rural counties do not have a psychiatrist or other behavioral health professionals.

Rural communities also contend with limited access to affordable and reliable internet , making it even more challenging to search for information or connect to telehealth services.

Offering grants to local organizations that help those most in need is just one way Kahan is doing his part to make an impact beyond his music — in towns just like the one that raised him.

Fighting stigma through fan communities

Knowing how isolating rural communities can be, another core component of The Busyhead Project is to destigmatize talking about mental health by connecting with others.

At Kahan’s shows, The Busyhead Project sets up a table or tent alongside other community partners and encourages fans to contribute to a “community wall,” where they answer prompts like “I take care of my mental health by…” or “I showed up for myself today by…”

A brown wall shows The Busyhead Project logo surrounded by white slips of paper with community messages written on them

“Some of the fans who have been with Noah since the beginning and have been following on Instagram already know [about The Busyhead Project], but it’s really fun to explain it to the audience,” Busyhead’s coordinator on tour, Lindsay Rosenberg, told Good Good Good in Denver.

“His audience is so open to talking about mental health… and I’ve found that really surprising and fantastic. People are coming up to us, asking a lot of questions, and choosing to write their own stories.”

Fans can also interact more deeply and give donations through Propeller , a digital platform that connects fans to their favorite artists and causes, to earn points that help them win exclusive prizes, like concert tickets, meet and greets, merch, and more.

A young woman with brown hair in braids holds up a community submission for The Busyhead Project

“The number of actions — over 33,000 — directly reflects fans doing things like donating, watching videos from Noah talking about his mental health struggles, downloading meditation apps, even getting a mental health certificate , and more,” Annie Flook, Propeller’s director of artist partnerships, explained.

“We just finished a campaign where fans could take action on Propeller to win a flyaway to see Noah at his sold-out Fenway Park show in Boston. To add, every night on tour, we offer the chance to win ticket upgrades, or signed setlists for supporting The Busyhead Project.”

Music as a means to healing

The fans are a key element to the success of The Busyhead Project, and those closest to Kahan’s fundraising work say it’s all a natural extension of his music.

Jeb Gutelius is the executive director of Jack Antonoff’s foundation The Ally Coalition and helps lead sailworks , a creative agency that connects artists with organizations and causes they care about to make change. His agency helps strategize and implement the work of The Busyhead Project.

“I feel something when I’m hearing music. So, what can we do with that — that relationship between a fan, an artist, and the music — and try to do some good?” he explained to Good Good Good.

Noah Kahan leaps high in the air while smiling and playing the guitar on stage

Hannah Curtiss, a Denver transplant, is also a Vermont native like Kahan, and said his rise to fame came at a time when she needed the supportive sounds of his music. That fan-musician-art relationship made an impact on her family, too.

“His success is so astonishing, but what’s more astonishing is it’s not just people 16-25 who get into his music; it’s ages all across the board,” she told Good Good Good.

Curtiss said her dad — a 68-year-old Vermonter whose willingness to talk about his feelings may or may not resemble the father figure Kahan writes about in his music — loves how Kahan makes him feel seen, too.

“He has no shame in his own struggles,” Curtiss said, of Kahan. “He’s so open and honest about it, and it somehow makes me feel like I can be comfortable with mine, too.”

Four women stand outside of a concert venue wearing shirts that say "Vermont Strong"

Kahan’s songs suggest a complicated relationship with his hometown and family. But despite how resonant that relationship has been for fans (18,000 people screamed “I’m mean because I grew up in New England” in Colorado this week, leaning into the irony that this likely isn’t literally true), Kahan’s connection to home really is all love.

“He is an internationally recognized artist who is insisting ‘okay, what are we doing in Vermont?’” Gutelius said. “In addition to everything else, that’s something he wants to focus on.”

Quantifying the impact of The Busyhead Project beyond dollars and cents is a tricky task, but if the hugs, hand-holding, and tear-wiping at this week’s shows are any indication, Kahan fans far and wide have found some antidote to their suffering in his work.

Noah Kahan performs on stage, holding a guitar. He is spotlit by a purple beam of light

An antidote Kahan shares.

“I remember listening to music and hearing an artist sing something that I thought I’d been the only person in the world to feel. I remember feeling heard and feeling like it saved me and that I could go through another day because someone else out there had felt what I felt,” Kahan said in a video last year.

“It's the honor of my lifetime… to help people through their battle with mental illness and the myriad of other disorders that affect us day to day.”

Good Good Good received two press tickets to Kahan ’ s show in Denver to support our coverage of this story.

JD McPherson sunshine getaway new album robert plant allison krauss tour

It’s difficult to believe that JD McPherson , one of the great classic-minded rock ‘n’ roll singer-songwriters of the modern age, hasn’t had a new album of non-seasonal material out in seven years. That absence of fresh recordings hasn’t caused anyone to issue any missing-person alerts for him in the past few years, though. He’s been quite visible, serving as both the band leader and opening act for three successive Robert Plant / Alison Krauss tours. At last, McPherson is concentrating on his solo career in a bigger way again this summer and fall, starting with “Sunshine Getaway,” a brand new track Variety is premiering today.

McPherson talked about the new single and previewed the new album for us from a Plant/Krauss tour date, where he sounds like he’s still having the time of his life, even as he looks forward to getting back to his day job as a self-made man at last.

“Sunshine Getaway” is a very summery sounding title, but it sounds like the inspiration was more wintery and aspirational, maybe more in a “California Dreamin’” sort of way?

The sound of it is very crunchy, very glam-rock. You are known for influences from even earlier in the classic rock ‘n’ roll era, but this brings in some that are maybe less associated with you.

Well, any playlist of mine, you’re gonna see Little Richard right next to T. Rex. You know, I discovered fuzz guitar on my second record and I never looked back. That’s one of the ones we’ve been playing live and really love playing it live. John Perrin from NRBQ’s been playing drums for us, and he’s got such a pocket and that song really grooves live, so we can’t wait to do the tour.

How’s it been being out again with Plant and Krauss?

This is the third year out and it’s by far the best one yet. We’ve got the set down to where it’s very dense and moves by quickly and it’s got quite a bit of uptempo material, so the set list sort of got worked on over the last three years, and everybody is just having the best time. Everybody’s had a lot of things that they’ve been working on (apart from one another), and so this has been a really nice welcome break to jump into this tour. It’s the time of my life. I really, really look forward to it, and this has been the best one so far. Doing my opening set, it feels the best too, I think just because there’s something that’s about to happen, and then just time with the Plant/Krauss band is such a gift.

How would you describe the sounds coming together on the new album?

And I think “The Rock and Roll Girls” was the first song that was finally finished. I’ve had part of that song written for a long time, because it’s about my daughter as a toddler kicking the back of my car seat. And, so anyway, that was kind of the beginning of the idea. And I started thinking about just surf music in general, and how there’s a common thread between surf music like the Ventures, Ennio Morricone soundtracks and Depeche Mode. There’s this common thread of this single-string reverbing guitar that runs through all those things. And once I had that in my head, songs just started coming out really fast. That’s when “Just Like Summer” came, and those kind of twangy tunes. So this record ended up being … My elevator pitch to people was: This record is if the mid-‘60s to late ‘60s Ventures was the session band for the first New Order record. It’s sort of like my love of obscure surf music plus my dark wave days in high school. It’s kinda my goth-surf record.

Clearly people have seen you out on those tours and know that you’ve not been just sitting around. But, as far as making a new record, seven years is a while. So did the time pass quickly or did it feel like a long time?

If somehow I could say that it simultaneously was a horribly long time and also went by really quickly, both might be accurate. My sense of time since the lockdown has just completely been totally scattered and disrupted. You know, I had trouble with finding my place in time before, but now it’s even worse. So everything seems like some kind of crazy temporal displacement happened. But truthfully, this record could have come out a lot sooner, because the germ of it began well before the pandemic happened. Even some recordings were made before then. But then so many things happened in my life between that time and now. So it’s happening now and, honestly, this is the way it was supposed to go.

The first attempt was, for lack of a better term, a tough lesson for me, because it was with my old band, and we did some sessions at East West Studios in L.A. and stayed in a nice house and everything. And it was sort of my attempt at having a baby to keep a marriage together, and it didn’t work. So, once kind of the old gang started to splinter off during the pandemic, I was sort of done for a minute. I didn’t even really want to think about those songs or do anything with them. You know, in tandem with all that the pandemic offered, I was planning on just doing something else with my life at that point. One thing I flirted with was being someone who recommends what trees to plant in people’s yard. Seemed like a nice job, helping people get the right tree to grow, how to make it grow better. So that was a weird time for me.

Then it was sort of like it was the last chance. So I went and recorded with Alex Hall, who has had something to do with almost every record I’ve ever done, whether playing drums or mixing or engineering or something. And we just went back to his place and recorded pretty much live, and now, here we are — now we have a record.

Everyone who loves you knows you pull from a lot of different places, but you’ve suggested you think this might surprise people a bit. Do you think some people will sort of cock their ear for a minute going, oh, this is a little off the path?

Oh, definitely. It is. But I mean, there’s a line from the third record to this record. Like, the song “On the Lips” is like an ancestor of these songs, so there is a thread. And I think “I Can’t Go Anywhere With You” could have belonged on my second record. “Sunshine Getaway” could be on the third record. It’s kind of the more Fleetwood-sy, Beach Boys-y tunes, like “Travel Through the Night Alone” and the last song, “That’s What a Love Song Does to You,” that are, to me, new territory. So yeah, if someone is that rare unicorn of a person who knows every one of my records, it makes sense. But for the people who still only have ever heard the first record, they’re gonna be very confused.

But I’m at a point where I truly, truly am not worried about anything like that anymore. I’m at the point in my life now I have surrounded myself with people who are just kind of full of optimism and living in the present. And I am making what I want to make, and with people who want to make it with me, and in a very happy place as far as making work goes. You know, very few bands have made the same record over and over again, successfully. AC/DC is the clear winner in that regard. AC/DC has never changed their thing. Even the Ramones started adding guitar solos after a point! But AC/DC is the one band that that stuck to their guns and never made anything bad. So, that’s really impossible to do. And for me, I just think what I’m listening to changes so much. What I’m reading about changes the way I think about things. You never know what story’s gonna pop up in your life that wants to be expressed in a certain way that can’t be expressed with, you know, a saxophone section.

And you just kind of have to follow that thread and see where it takes you. I mean, this record really wouldn’t have existed if I hadn’t gotten a free Spotify account and the algorithm recommended those few songs. So blame Spotify, I guess.

Underground tours resume at Minnesota's oldest iron mine

A MARTÍNEZ, HOST:

All right. Hopefully, you're not afraid of the dark or of heights because we're about to plunge more than 2,300 feet underground, into Minnesota's oldest iron ore mine. The state provides most of America's iron ore. This mine has been closed for four years, first during the pandemic, then for maintenance. Now it's open again, and Minnesota Public Radio's Dan Kraker tagged along with a fifth-grade class on a recent tour.

(SOUNDBITE OF MINE CAGE BUZZER)

SARAH GUY-LEVAR: Alright, let's go. In you go.

DAN KRAKER, BYLINE: Sarah Guy-Levar herds about a dozen kids and several adults into a disconcertingly small steel cage for the descent into the Soudan Underground Mine. It's only 5 feet deep, 6 1/2 feet across. We're squashed like sardines.

(SOUNDBITE OF MINE CAGE DROPPING)

GUY-LEVAR: In the days of mining, 18 to 21 full-grown men in this cage.

KRAKER: The cage zooms down through the rock, rattling as it plummets down, down, dropping 1,000 feet per minute to the 27th - and deepest - level of the mine.

KAREL WINKELAAR: Watch your step.

KRAKER: At the bottom, a sign tells us we are 2,341 feet below the surface, 689 feet below sea level.

(SOUNDBITE OF MINE TRAIN)

KRAKER: Then we hop on a train and ride nearly a mile to the last area that was mined.

WINKELAAR: All right, come on over here, guys. Everybody...

KRAKER: Tour guide Karel Winkelaar leads the way into a large cavern dug out of the rock.

WINKELAAR: This was the ore body that we're in right now. You mined all the ore from overhead.

KRAKER: The Soudan Mine opened in 1882. The ore here was prized to make the steel vital to the nation's industrial growth and to fight in World Wars I and II.

WINKELAAR: I want you guys to come in a little closer.

KRAKER: Winkelaar shuts off the lights. It's so dark, no one can see their hands. He lights a small candle, just as miners would have a century ago.

WINKELAAR: This candle happens to be put into what we call a corner sconce, and that corner sconce is designed to be worn in your hard hat like this. You put it on here, and now you can go to work and work hands-free.

KRAKER: Mine workers toiled 12 hours a day, six days a week, and only got paid for the ore they hauled up. Winkelaar tells the students most of them were immigrants from Eastern Europe.

WINKELAAR: The company is going to be taking advantage of you. You guys are immigrants. We're going to give you the jobs that nobody else wants to do.

GUY-LEVAR: All right, we're ready to load.

(SOUNDBITE OF MINE CAGE ASCENDING)

KRAKER: After the three-minute ride back to daylight, we visit the engine house. Three-thousand-foot-long steel cables unspool on a giant drum to lower the cages down the shaft. Jesse Gornick and Steve Yapel maintain the 100-year-old electric hoist. Both their grandfathers and great-grandfathers worked here. Gornick says they're custodians of history.

JESSE GORNICK: And expressing the knowledge and the importance of mining to others and kind of keeping it alive for future generations to understand why it's important.

KRAKER: This is the 59th summer of tours at the Soudan Mine, since it became a state park in 1965. Sarah Guy-Levar, the park's interpretive supervisor, says crews recently completed a nearly $10 million project to reconstruct part of the mine shaft.

GUY-LEVAR: So we don't have to worry about anything caving in onto the cages, and it is a smooth ride right now. I know it felt really bumpy and shaky to you, but the engineers did a great job.

KRAKER: About 35,000 people tour the mine every year, and Guy-Levar expects pent-up demand to take this deep dive into Minnesota history.

For NPR News, I'm Dan Kraker, in Soudan, Minn.
