What people love about Douro Cruises

A very pleasant 8 day experience but really more like a five day cruise. The cruise information was incomplete, leaving out interesting opportunities along the way (Port museums and prehistoric rock art,) most particularly an excursion to Salamanca, which turned out to be a highlight for us. The food was good but not as interesting as Portuguese restaurants in Porto or even at home in Canada.
Ship was beautiful. Excellent service and food. Cruise director was always available and made everyone feel welcome. Excursons were excellent. Would recommend highly.
Really appreciated the combination of cruising and hiking, plus excursions for non-hikers so they weren't neglected. Accommodated food needs creatively, although the gluten-free option - while better than previous experience with CroisiEurope - could still be improved. More gluten-free chocolate croissants! Nice selection of evening entertainment. Never a dull moment; but one was able just to sit and read or watch the scenery go by if wanted. Although we choose CroisiEurope partly for the French immersion experience, being paired with other English speakers at meals worked very well. Our American compatriots were grateful to have English-speaking companions, and for us it relieved the intensity that would have been entailed by full French immersion. Thanks for organizing perfect weather! ;-)

Crucemundo

"A very affordable cruise on a lovely ship. The food was excellent and the cabins were clean and comfortable. There were a few negatives, we were advised that is was better not to drink water from the cabin taps, but we were charged 4 Euros a day for bottled water in the cabin. Also no water was provided for the tours. Our travel agent TourRader said that we could not book excursions until we were on the ship.. Consequently there was no English speaking guide as no excursions had been booked. Only German, who presumably booked through another company. They did however manage to recruit a Spanish cruise coordinator, who although wasn't a guide, did speak English and helped tremendously with arrangong trips for the 6 English speaking guests.

"The only negative I have is that Uniworld did not provide name tags for each individual. Cruises are very social and meeting new people is always a pleasure. Name tags would have been so very helpful in getting to know fellow passengers and to recall names. If certain people don'tvwant to wear them then that's ok too.

CroisiEurope River Cruises

"The Douro River Valley was spectacular. A must see. The cruise company did an excellent job with making sure that our small English speaking group onboard (7 total) enjoyed the announcements, itinerary and tours in English. Food was French and excellent. The room was small, but considering such a busy itinerary, it was really just used for sleeping. I would not hesitate to use CroisiEurope again in the future.

What to wear on Douro River Cruise?

For a Douro River Cruise, what you wear depends on the season. In the spring , think about layers. Mix long and short sleeves, light sweaters, and comfortable pants or skirts for daytime activities. For evenings, bring a jacket or sweater for cooler weather, and a light scarf can add both warmth and style.

In the summer , lightweight and breathable clothing like T-shirts and shorts are perfect, along with comfortable sandals. Don't forget sun protection - bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. It's advisable to have a light jacket or shawl for cooler evenings or if there's a breeze from the river.

In the fall , layering is key. Long sleeves, light sweaters, and comfortable pants work well during the day, and adding a light scarf provides extra warmth. As the temperature may drop in the evening, consider bringing a jacket or warmer layer for outdoor activities.

During the winter , bundle up with a coat, scarf, and gloves. Layering is essential for staying warm during outdoor excursions. In the evening, wear a heavier jacket or coat, and ensure you have warm layers for any outdoor events or stargazing.

Regardless of the season, comfortable footwear is a must. This way, you'll be well-prepared for a comfortable and enjoyable Douro River Cruise experience, no matter the time of year.

Portugal's golden douro river, home to our newest cruises, private wine-pairing dinner at quinta do portal, sample the bounty of the douro valley at quinta do portal.

Situated near the village of Pinhão in the Cima Corgo region of Portugal's Douro River Valley wine country, the family-owned wine estate of Quinta Do Portal has produced premium Port wine on this land since the latter part of the 19th century, and began producing fine non-fortified wines on a boutique winery model in the 1990s. Your visit to Quinta do Portal introduces you to the estate's vineyards and winemaking process, and includes a delectable wine pairing dinner featuring wines created on the estate.

Explore Pinhão by a town walkabout or a terraced vineyard hike

Hiking from provesende through terraced vineyards to pinhão.

The idyllic village of Pinhão, situated at a scenic bend of Portugal's Douro River, is considered the gateway to the quintas and large wine estates of the Douro River Valley, one of Europe's oldest and revered wine making regions. Enjoy a hike through some of the area's lush terraced vineyards on your visit to Pinhão and its stunningly beautiful landscapes.

Excursion choices include Prehistoric art at Museu do Côa

Discover paleolithic rock art at museu do côa.

A choice of sightseeing from Vega de Terron, Spain, includes the Museum of Art and Archaeology of the Côa Valley. During excavations for a dam on the Côa River in the 1990s, thousands of engraved prehistoric rock drawings were discovered along the river in Vila Nova de Foz Côa. Archaeologists determined that these petroglyphs – originally created in the open air – dated to the Paleolithic era, between 10,000 to 22,000 years BC! The dam was eventually canceled, and 23 Côa Valley rock art sites became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. View and learn about this remarkable art on a visit to the high-tech Museu do Côa, rising over the valley.

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Portugal. You do not need a visa for the short duration of this journey.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact a Portuguese consulate or embassy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor onboard the riverboat. In case of emergency, we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

The riverboat is registered in Portugal. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country , please contact a French embassy or consulate to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

To enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

The riverboat has four decks: Emerald, Ruby, Diamond and Sun. The elevator runs between the Diamond Deck and the Emerald Deck, which includes a stop at the Ruby Deck. There is no chair lift between any of the decks. Please note that in some docking locations, the gangway must be extremely steep, or involve steps instead of a ramp.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking is not permitted in any cabin, restaurant, lounge or any other interior space.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The climate of Portugal is among the warmest of any country in Europe. In spring and summer temperatures are extremely high, often reaching 85ºF (30ºC) and above, and most days are sunny. Throughout this region rainfall is minimal or non-existent during the summer months and very light in late spring and early fall.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here .

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual.  Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men.  For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable.  For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers.  Your journey also includes one or two special occasion dinners, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested.  (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)

Valet laundry service is available at the hotel and on the riverboat for a fee. There is no valet dry cleaning available on the riverboat. Ironing facilities are available on the riverboat by request to the front desk. Category 5 cabins feature their own irons and ironing boards. For other cabins, they are available by request from Reception.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the riverboat.

We suggest that you pack the following items your journey:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents to be secured in the safe in your hotel room or cabin

Thinking about a Douro cruise with Uniworld, sometime in 2024.  Having done the Rhine and Danube,  I am asking for comments and/or comparisons regarding your experiences . Please tell me recommendations or concerns that might be helpful in selecting a cruise line, season and experiences that will be appreciated.

Who did you do the Rhine and Danube with?  Uniworld?  If so, you already know the downsides [décor  😉 ].

The Douro brings its own changes:  the river is very narrow, so only daytime sailing is allowed [this is generally considered a good thing, as you actually get to enjoy the scenery that is shown in all the ads...].  But that also means the sights are generally at the top of the very steep banks, so there is less ability to wander off the ship and explore on your own.  And the focus of most river cruise sightseeing is wine:  Port, Port and more Port.

Most river cruise lines seem to have similar itineraries on the Douro [as everywhere].  One big difference is that Scenic offers both the usual 7-nt sailings and also the 10-nt Unforgettable Douro  ( Porto-to-Porto, including Salamanca and many sightseeing options that are nature or cultural, rather than Port wine intensive).

After much research, that's the one we booked.  Our first Scenic cruise, May 2022 on a 10-nt itinerary on the Seine, was spectacular.  I'll let you (and everyone) know about their Douro itinerary after our cruise late September 2023.

We used Uniworld with the precruise extension in Libson. We were very pleased.

As you may know, due to special rules in Portugal, there is no sailing at night. Also, the ships and crews on all the lines are managed by the same Portuguese company.

We sailed during July which actually worked out well with the schedule. Most pax were on deck in swimsuits enjoying the sunshine while sailing past the vineyards and thru the locks. Everything is included in the Uniworld fare so if you’re up for a cocktail by the pool why not? Uniworld also includes Salamanca in it’s itinerary.

Well here are my five eggs, we went with Scenic and if you have Maria Elaina as a guide you’re in for a treat. In Porto don’t miss the sardine can shop really quirky, at the stock exchange go up high to get the full effect of the floor, try as many freebies as possible in the market and wonder at the most beautiful tile work in the railway station. That’s only the start lovely cruise, super people, enjoy!

Avalon will be offering two cruises on the Douro for the first time this year. One Porto - Porto (8 days), and another that adds in 3 days in Lisbon. Both include a trip to Salamanca.

The ship is not "online" yet, but looks like they are having it built to include the beds facing the windows like the other European ships, but it will be quite a bit smaller.

@Canal archive  where is the sardine shop you recommend?  the pictures of the one I found on TripAdvisor don't include the wall of cans  😕 [confused face]

image.thumb.jpeg.bcf2ce30617222c21bc805fceb276f1f.jpeg

Yet another wall it’s across the park from the book shop which we couldn’t go into because the queue was to long.

Quirky family gifts just choose the birth year.

It was included in our escorted tour and ran out of time.

Figured it out:  Comur, Campo dos Mártires da Pátria 111, 4050-367 Porto, Portugal

https://www.comur.com/onde-estamos/loja-casa-oriental/

So the dates are just souvenir decorations?  I was afraid these were (very) vintage sardines!!!

And thanks for the suggestions.  I picked up a couple of ideas to add to my Porto sightseeing itinerary.   😀

1951 was an exceptional year for canned sardines. 1944... not so much! 😝

Portugal does do have very good canned artisan sardines. Recommend trying some. 👌

We did the Douro on Emerald in early Nov, 2022.  Good value/mild weather with occasional rain. Highlights were Salamanca and Emerald Plus' dinner with a classical music ensemble in a winery's restaurant amid the aging casks.  Emerald used three affable on-board guides and same bus drivers the entire trip--but we met different local guides at the various port calls who provided the local commentary.

If you have time,  well worth a few days pre/post cruise in Porto/Vila de Nova Gaia (directly across the river).  Used Rick Steves for planning and DIY attraction/dining suggestions. Take a look at Porto Card  price/discounts.

Spent a very enjoyable  week post-cruise on Madeira --1/2 in/around Funchal--1/2 in Ponto Moniz with rental car (had 1st scuba lesson at age 77 in Ponto Moniz' tidal pool and aquarium tanks-excellent instructor).  Portuguese are friendly, laid back and great hosts.

pontac

We took a cruise of the Douro with our friends in 2014 on Viking. The holiday started with three nights in Lisbon. Lisbon is a pleasant city but Mrs Pontac and I had been there many times before on business so ...

I see Uniworld offer both an 8 and 11 day holiday, 8 days being Porto > Porto, 11 days being Porto>Port then coach to Lisbon. Be aware that it's an all day coach ride from Porto to Lisbon; the Viking coach broke the journey twice, one for lunch and one to tour Coimbra. Looking at the scant information on Uniworld's site, they promise  Dine on traditional fare in majestic Coimbra so  it looks like lunch will be in Coimbra.

The Douro is dramatic with steep high banks on either side, terraced with grape vines and with wineries along the way. It's the home of the famous Port (Porto in the USA) fortified wine, but there's much more than Port. Lack of demand from current consumers means much table wine is now produced and they can be sublime and are very good value.

The further you travel from Porto the narrower the river so in places it seems you can touch both banks. But the navigable river is short, it stops at the Spanish border then you travel back to Porto. The day trip to Salamanca (a city worth seeing) involves a long coach trip.

There aren't many places on the river that ships can moor. And there lies a problem. When we travelled in 2014 there were few tour ships. Our friends went back in 2022 and they were constantly rafted because there are now so many tour ships.

Viking does offer a Porto to Porto cruise itinerary for UK residents - no need to go to Lisbon.

image.thumb.jpeg.08f44b2fdfad38746f1f1e8d6e2413e1.jpeg

The Douro is a beautiful river.

No rafting at all when we went maybe it’s depends on the time of year.

Scenic is the only one I know of that does 11 days all on the Douro, Porto to Porto (among other options like the ones you describe for Uniworld).  We're using MyDayTrip to get from Lisbon to Porto over several days, and then Porto to LIS at the end.

I never did get to Lisbon as my DH had been there loads of times on business once even playing football with Eusebio - how that’s business I don’t know! 🤔

Having just done a Douro cruise with Tauck, I would highly recommend seeing the region by car instead.  It is easy to drive and would be much more interesting than the boring “sea days” and underwhelming port towns along the river.  The river is beautiful but the cruise was almost too much of a good thing and became boring after the first full day of sailing.  If you haven’t been to Portugal it is so easy to navigate and see Lisbon and Porto as well as the Douro region in 10 days or so.

Could not agree at all we had a wonderful experience with Scenic full of interest plenty of choices and I’d say especial crew, friendly and prepared to go out of their way for everyone’s pleasure.

Same with Uniworld. Every day something different.

Ditto for Viking.

Interesting perspective, as the most common complaint I see about river cruising is that there isn't any daytime sailing past beautiful river vistas – and the Douro is the one itinerary that has that.  But I do understand: our first ocean cruise was deliberately chosen because it was port-intensive and we were dreading the two sea days – we ended up enjoying them, but a little bit can go a long way.  We'll see:  this summer we have the Scenic 11-day Douro cruise booked, so we'll have even more "sea days" than you did.

We did the eleven day on Scenic and in some cases actually had to make ourselves stop to catch a breath.

Then perhaps what is fast-paced for some is slow-paced for others.  This Douro cruise was the first time we were glad when it was over despite the stellar reputation of Tauck; but then we had already been traveling for weeks when we started the Douro Cruise.

Be sure to go on the top deck when you go through locks - and be prepared to duck.

I duck when I'm driving through a tunnel!

Commencing in the Roman city of Porto, the home of Port wine, Portugal’s once wild river Douro has been tamed by locks into resembling a series of finger lakes, adding greatly to the valley's ambience. Leaving behind the Atlantic influenced greenery of the coast you are soon immersed in a Mediterranean land of olives, vines, and picturesque, medieval hilltop villages. Our destination is the higher reaches of the valley from where we visit Salamanca - home of one of Europe’s oldest universities, two of its finest cathedrals, Spain’s finest city square and even the Inquisition!

You will adore the away-from-it-all experience and visit some of Iberia’s most beautiful medieval towns, monasteries and vineyards, and feel you have been away for months!

Head south to the beautiful Roman city of Coimbra and discover the tranquil sanctuary of Fatima. Next, explore the famous sights of Lisbon before travelling to the picturesque town of Sintra, with its panoramic views and the famous Royal Palace.

EMBARK IN PORTO

Arrive in Porto, where your five-star floating hotel is moored. Here an attentive crew will welcome you aboard, ensuring you settle into your comfortable and extremely well-equipped cabin.

Route map (excludes extension)

As dawn breaks over Porto the adventure begins as our elegant vessel commences her stately passage upstream. Your first delicious breakfast is served by the attentive crew and whilst you linger over another coffee, you can really start to unwind as we leave the city skyline far behind. Head up on deck to appreciate the changing landscape in all its splendor as the river weaves its way between the lush hillsides; from the first morning on board, it’s very apparent that the Douro is one of Europe’s most photogenic river valleys and the topography has prevented the building of extensive riverside roads.

Thoughts turn to lunch, so reconvene with your fellow travelers in the elegant restaurant – its lovely panoramic windows ensure you won’t miss any of the spectacular views gliding by before we arrive later in the pretty little town of Pinhão. We enjoy a visit to a local historic quinta to learn all about the stages of wine production, from the planting of the vines, harvesting, the wine-making process and finally tasting and labeling. No visit would be complete without sampling some of their excellent produce of course, so we enjoy a tasting before returning to the ship.

Tonight, as you enter the restaurant for the Welcome Dinner, feel free to choose your table. We are moored in Pinhão overnight.

Porto

CASTELO RODRIGO

As dawn breaks, early risers can witness the ship’s graceful departure. Relax over a leisurely breakfast whilst the ever-changing scenery idly slips by through the restaurant’s superb panoramic windows.

The Douro was once a wild river, notoriously challenging to navigate, especially for the traditional flat-bottomed boats, which often foundered in its waters. Today it has been tamed by a system of dams and locks, which have raised the water level to produce a topography reminiscent of Scotland’s lochs that enhances the valley’s charm. As we cruise into ever more rural territory towards the Spanish border, the river here is at its most peaceful. It’s the perfect time to take a refreshing dip in the Sun Deck pool – a rare treat on a cruise ship – or catch up on some reading, perhaps with a cool pre-lunch glass of vinho verde, the local, gently fizzy white wine. Portuguese wine is simply outstanding but production is low, so the best is rarely exported. Our on-board wine list includes some excellent regional wines and the friendly and attentive restaurant staff will gladly guide you through them. Do experiment a little and you’ll be greatly rewarded.

This afternoon we visit Castelo Rodrigo, a delightful 12th-century walled village tucked away in the picturesque highland ranges bordering Spain. Its church was a resting place on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and it is said that Saint Francis himself stayed here. The views are simply stupendous, stretching across almost-deserted ochre hillsides.

This evening after dinner we will see a celebratory vintage port wine opened in the traditional way, then head up on to the sun deck to listen to the unmistakable sound of crickets and breathe in the scents from the surrounding valley slopes that pervade the warm evening air.

Castelo Rodrigo

Today we visit historic Salamanca, one of the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites on this journey, regarded by many Spaniards as their nation’s most beautiful city. Founded by the Romans, who erected its 389-yard-long bridge, Salamanca is mostly built from local sandstone that emanates a gorgeous rose-coloured glow in the sunlight. Perched on a hill on a bend in the serene River Tormes, the city is a picture of tranquillity but its history is turbulent, having been successively fought over by Hannibal, the Moors, then the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon.

Salamanca is dominated by its two cathedrals and its university. Founded in 1218, the university is the oldest in Spain and was one of the civilised world’s most important seats of study for over 400 years. The Spanish Inquisition’s records are still kept here, and as early as the 16th century it boasted some 12,000 students. Seeing its immaculately preserved lecture halls with their vaulted ceilings, it’s easy to conjure an image of Christopher Columbus addressing the learned men of the day or legal experts constructing the international laws that originate here.

Over lunch you enjoy a traditional flamenco show, then you are free to explore Salamanca as you wish. You may choose to linger, admiring the ornate interiors of its cathedrals – the more recent dates from the 16th century – or explore its tiny streets, medieval squares, traditional shops, gardens and marketplaces. The main square, the Plaza Mayor, is unmissable. Possibly Spain’s finest public square, it was built in the 18th century in Spanish Baroque style with colonnaded walkways all around at ground level, ideal for finding a shaded spot to sit and watch the locals go about their daily lives.

Salamanca Bridge and Cathedral

MATEUS PALACE GARDENS

One of the benefits of life aboard a river cruise is the sheer sense of relaxation it brings; our elegant ship slips its moorings during breakfast, after which there is plenty of time for a spot of pampering in the on-board spa, or simply watch the seamless changing of the riverbank scenery passing by from the comfort of a cozy seat in the lounge. We’re in port wine territory, where the lush hillsides have largely given way to a patterned landscape of terraced vineyards. Inland from the Atlantic, the climate has changed, too; it’s noticeably warmer and drier, while the area has a Mediterranean appearance with orangey, earthy colors replacing verdant greens.

After another superb lunch on board, we cruise into the small town of Peso da Régua, from where we visit the grounds of the splendid Mateus Palace. Anyone familiar with Mateus Rosé and its characteristic ‘squashed’ bottle will recognize the palace from the label. Whatever your opinion of the wine, it is an impressive 18th-century Baroque edifice, mirrored in its stunning pond, surrounded by landscaped French gardens.

This evening we take the short drive to the 126-acre Quinta da Pacheca for dinner. Enjoying dramatic views over the Douro, it dates back to the 18th century and is simply one of the most beautiful and distinguished properties in the region. It is also notable as being the first quinta – in 1738 – to bottle wine under the name of its owner, the aristocrat Mariana Pacheco Pereira. You have time to wander through part of the estate before sampling a selection of its finest wines at dinner.

Mateus Palace

This morning after breakfast we take a short drive to historic Lamego, home of Portugal’s sparkling wine, Raposeira, and one of the first places to be reclaimed from the Moors in the 12th century. Situated atop the hill overlooking this lovely town is the ancient Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies church, its stairways adorned with attractive azulejos, the country’s characteristic painted ceramic tiles.

By the time we return to our ship, our chef and his team will be adding the finishing touches to another delicious lunch, ready to be served as we depart for Entre-os-Rios. After lunch, there’s the perfect opportunity to take to the sun deck to enjoy the kaleidoscope of Douro views – or perhaps a spot of reading in the lounge over a cup of tea. This evening is the Captain’s Dinner, a truly memorable experience featuring exquisite regional specialties, followed by a colorful performance of traditional Portuguese folk music by a local cultural group.

Stairway to Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies church

There’s a perfect opportunity to avail yourself of some of the ship’s range of five-star facilities this morning – maybe a little gentle exercise in the fitness room before heading up to the sun deck to enjoy a coffee whilst chatting with newly-made friends as our ship makes a graceful arrival in Porto once more, passing under the city’s spectacular bridges. Porto is of course synonymous with wonderful port wine and all the famous port producers are here, such as Cálem, Sandeman and Ferreira, so a visit here would not be complete without a tour of one of them. You’ll learn about this fortified wine’s fascinating history and its close British connections. Port is made from grapes still pressed in the traditional way – by feet – then lovingly matured, sometimes for decades, before you can enjoy its subtle flavors. Of course, you’ll get the chance to sample various port styles at the end of our visit.

After lunch on board we enjoy a guided tour of Porto. Strategically overlooking the Douro as it empties into the Atlantic, Portugal’s second largest city was originally a Roman town, but its wealth derived from its knowledge of the sea routes to India, with fortunes made from trading spices, silks and other fine goods. Our tour unveils some of its major and more surprising sights.

You’ll have the rest of the afternoon to explore the truly fascinating city; so perhaps return to the terraced streets of the old town and wander the sloping maze of winding, cobbled alleyways, soaking up the atmosphere whilst stopping to admire the lovely architecture, soaring bell towers, fine baroque churches, golden rooftops and beautiful tiles of this slice of traditional Portugal. Stop for a drink in a cozy café and be tempted by an array of delicious cakes and pastries – perhaps sample a pastel de nata , the traditional Portuguese custard tart.

This evening, enjoy a final dinner on board expertly served by our restaurant staff under the supervision of the maître d’ . Afterward, perhaps settle into the lounge to chat into the evening and reflect on the splendors of the remarkable River Douro – over a glass of port, of course.

COIMBRA & FATIMA

We depart the ship and leave behind the terraced hillsides of the Douro Valley. Heading south, our journey takes us inland as the wild seascapes of the Atlantic coast gradually give way to a hinterland of fertile fields and pine forests.

Our first destination is the ancient city of Coimbra, renowned for the impressive Roman aqueduct striding across the city and the historic university, one of Europe’s oldest and a rival to Salamanca’s. With its labyrinthine lanes, charming Moorish quarter and pretty squares, this city is a fascinating place to explore and its many historical buildings are collectively classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once a capital city, Coimbra became a major cultural center during the Middle Ages with the university at its heart. We have the privilege of a visit to the university, which is situated on a hill overlooking the city. Its Baroque library – rich in giltwork, exotic woods and with a dazzling frescoed ceiling – contains over 200,000 leather-bound, centuries-old volumes. Equally extraordinary is the chapel, so exquisitely decorated it would be considered a cathedral in most places, and in complete contrast to the university prison, which is suitably austere and dates back to the mid 16th century.

We drive on through olive groves and wheat fields to Fátima, an unremarkable small town until 1917 when three children experienced an apparition of the Virgin Mary and it suddenly became an important Catholic pilgrimage site and a national shrine. The original chapel built to mark the site of the apparition is now part of a large and impressive Sanctuary Complex, which is well worth exploring.

Later we arrive in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal and the country’s finest natural harbor, situated at the mouth of the River Tagus. Nestled amid seven hills, the city’s skyline is a mosaic of pastel and ochre shades, peppered with elegant domes and soaring spires.

We stay three nights at the Real Palacio Hotel or Olissippo Marquês de Sá.

Extension route map

After a leisurely breakfast, we set out to discover Lisbon’s highlights, many of which have attained the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site. On our tour, we’ll see the strikingly modern Monument to the Discoveries and its 16th-century fortified counterpart, the Belém Tower, then visit the Jerónimos Monastery. One of the most magnificent buildings in Europe, the Monastery is a symbol of Portuguese wealth and power during the Age of Discovery. Founded by Henry the Navigator and containing the tomb of Vasco da Gama, it is an enormous, dazzlingly white edifice in classic Portuguese Gothic style, intricately decorated throughout with maritime motifs. We also see the impressive Terreiro do Paço square, facing out to sea, the majestic castle and Sé, the 12th-century Romanesque cathedral. There’s also Alfama, the Moorish quarter of timeless cobbled streets, and the wonderful belvedere at São Pedro de Alcântara with its expansive views across the rooftops.

Lisbon’s charm is its mix of ancient, modern, bustling and peaceful, so this afternoon is free to explore. You might be tempted by the chic shops of the elegant Baixa quarter, rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1755, or decide to seek out a café to enjoy a bica – a strong espresso often taken with a nata, the city’s devilishly moreish custard tart. Art-lovers can savor the Gulbenkian Foundation, established by an Armenian oil magnate who bought art from Saint Petersburg’s Hermitage after the Russian Revolution for bargain prices. This world-class institution has exhibits ranging from ancient Egyptian treasures to Impressionist paintings to a superb collection of Lalique jewelry and glass. And don’t forget to take a ride on one of the clanging, rattling yellow trams; seemingly well past their sell-by date, they’re still the best way to negotiate the sharp bends of the historic quarter.

Rooftops in Lisbon

We take a short drive to the hillside town of Sintra, whose verdant slopes were memorably described by Byron as a ‘glorious Eden’. Spectacularly perched on a hillside with views towards the nearby Atlantic coast, this is where Henry the Navigator grew up and doubtless gazed out to sea, imagining what lay beyond the horizon. It was also the retreat of Portugal’s royalty during the hot summer months. The narrow streets of the Old Town wind their way to the main square where you’ll find the National Palace, a wonderful mix of Gothic and Moorish styles crowned by a pair of huge white conical chimneys. Today this landmark is a museum with grand rooms and priceless art collections.

You may also choose to make your own way to the romantic 19th-century Pena Palace. Built as a summer residence, it is a living fairy tale; its colorful turrets, ramparts, gargoyles, domes, and Moorish arches are a mystical mix of styles, while the interior is extravagantly decorated and features a ballroom and magnificent Arab Room. The surrounding park and lakes display an equally eclectic mix of ferns, rhododendrons and exotic plants from the former Portuguese colonies. Should you wish to spend a little longer in Sintra and return to Lisbon under your own steam, your Tour Manager will be able to advise how this can be done easily by train.

Otherwise, we return to Lisbon along the coastline where Atlantic rollers crash onto endless golden beaches. Lisbon has an amazing old quarter that still follows the original Phoenician street grid, so spend this evening wandering through its atmospheric lanes lined with bars and restaurants, often decorated with the colorful ceramic tiles so typical of this city. Many will be buzzing with the sound of fado – a unique and infectious musical mix evolved from folk, colonial African and Brazilian styles. Don’t leave Lisbon without experiencing this.

<p>If you’re a fan of cruising, what could be better than pairing a river cruise with an ocean one? For example, combine a sail along the Douro, which cuts across Spain and Portugal and finishes at the Atlantic coast, with an ocean-going cruise sailing out of Porto. Doing so is easy, especially if you sail with a line like <a href="https://www.vikingrivercruises.co.uk/?CreativeID=7a5f352e-f1e8-4546-91a4-c6b6ac2409c7_1&TagID=VC01_0112629_CK&utm_campaign=Brand+Defence&utm_medium=Search+Advertising&utm_term=null&utm_source=Google&gclid=CjwKCAiAoL6eBhA3EiwAXDom5twrhOZmvQs3yyVwYQQKNHOz7A6VOG0xSIMlV0Rgv1qDOEJQekESYhoCs3QQAvD_BwE">Viking Cruises</a>, which has a fleet including both ocean and river boats.</p>

Doing so is easy, especially if you sail with a line like Viking Cruises , which has a fleet including both ocean and river boats.

Most ocean-going cruise lines launch one or two ships a year. River cruise ships, however, take to the water much more regularly. Viking River Cruises doesn’t just lay claim to the biggest fleet (80 river cruising ships), but also the Guinness World Record for inaugurating the most new ships in a single day (14, if you were wondering).

<p>Europe’s rivers are lined with ancient cities and landmarks, but several cruise lines are delving deeper in Europe’s history by tackling a more diverse range of subjects. <p>River cruise ships make excellent use of space, and we’re increasingly seeing this applied to windows. These rail and river cruise packages offer guests the chance to take a five-day train journey through central Europe before boarding the ship. Expect more cruise lines to combine these modes of transport in the coming years.

<p>Uniworld’s decision to combine sailing with luxury railway trips onboard Golden Eagle’s trains is a sign of the times – we’ll see more collaborations designed to enhance guests’ experience. Riverside Luxury Cruises is the new kid on the block

River cruising might sound like a crowded market, but the launch of Riverside Luxury Cruises in April 2023 proves that there’s always room for more. This new line launched with one ship – Riverside Mozart – and offers cruises starting in Vienna, Budapest and Passau. The ship’s rooftop bar looks pretty special, although we’re equally excited about the cuisine, inspired by regions the ship sails through.

Keen to sail along Europe’s most famous rivers but not so keen on crowds? Choose a river cruise that goes well beyond the cities on the itinerary, and you’ll be richly rewarded. For example, opt for one of the cruises that travels past Budapest to the Black Sea’s spectacular marshy delta, or along the more remote stretches of Germany’s often-overlooked Main River.

Even the busiest rivers have quiet spots

Unlike on ocean-going cruises, you won’t need binoculars to appreciate the scenery. Sign up for an American river cruise and you can sail through vast bayous, past skyscraper-filled cities and along ocean-wide stretches of the Mississippi during a single sailing, while in Europe, Germany’s UNESCO-listed castles can be easily combined with Prague’s bohemian masterpieces.

The landscape is fabulously diverse

<p><a href="http://www.croisieurope.co.uk/">CroisiEurope</a> is the only river cruise line operating on Lake Kariba in Southern Africa. <p>We’ve all come across cruise lines which claim to be all-inclusive but are actually anything but. Most river cruises are truly all-inclusive

We’ve all come across cruise lines which claim to be all-inclusive but are actually anything but. These days, more cruise lines are going all out to offer passengers better value for money by including everything from premium drinks to excursions. Scenic River Cruises is a great example – cruise prices include flights from the UK, transfers, premium drinks, all meals (including fine dining ones) and excursions.

To start with, there are no ocean waves and currents to rock the boat. Additionally, fewer decks means less chance of feeling any movement – you’ll be closer to the hull of the ship (the part which moves least) and river cruising ships’ low-slung design means there’s minimal sway anyway. In summary? You can spend your time planning your excursions and activities rather than poring over ship plans in order to bag a cabin in the most stable spot.

You’re unlikely to feel seasick on a river cruise

<p>River cruises can take you to some of the world’s most remote places, as well as waterways which simply aren’t explored very often. CroisiEurope, for example, is the only operator to offer cruises on Spain’s Guadalquivir River (pictured at Seville), while the Heritage Line’s new Upper Mekong cruise, which sets sail in August 2023, will focus on remote areas of Laos.</p> <p><a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/92727/amazing-facts-about-cruise-ships-you-might-not-know?page=1"><strong>Amazing facts about cruise ships you might not know</strong></a></p>

River cruises will take you to the end of the world (almost)

River cruises can take you to some of the world’s most remote places, as well as waterways which simply aren’t explored very often. CroisiEurope, for example, is the only operator to offer cruises on Spain’s Guadalquivir River (pictured at Seville), while the Heritage Line’s new Upper Mekong cruise, which sets sail in August 2023, will focus on remote areas of Laos.

The Nile is 4,132 miles (6,650km) long. To put that into perspective, if you drove from John O’Groats to Land’s End (the entire length of Britain) you’d cover just 840 miles (1,352km). We recommend Viking’s Pharaohs and Pyramids cruise, which starts and finishes in Cairo and takes in Luxor’s Karnak Temple complex, the Necropolis of Thebes and the beautiful Philae temple complex (pictured), which is surrounded by water.

You can cruise the world’s longest river

<p>There are no interior cabins on river cruise ships – all cabins face outwards and most have floor-to-ceiling windows. Cruise lines make the most of the space in innovative ways, too. On several <a href="http://uniworld.com">Uniworld</a> vessels, for example, mirrors are actually concealed televisions. The cabins at the rear of riverboats are often the cheapest – but if you’re a light sleeper, remember that this is because the engines are located here. </p>

<p>One example is <a href="http://www.amadeus-rivercruises.com">Amadeus River Cruises</a>. In May 2023 the line will launch Amadeus Riva, which will have a hi-tech air filtration system with a two-stage purification system capable of removing aerosols – including any containing microscopic virus particles – from interior spaces.</p>

One example is Amadeus River Cruises . In May 2023 the line launched Amadeus Riva, which has a hi-tech air filtration system with a two-stage purification system capable of removing aerosols – including any containing microscopic virus particles – from interior spaces.

We’re seeing more river cruise lines offer a complimentary night in a hotel prior to setting sail, along with further opportunities to explore the embarkation and disembarkation destinations. Expect more river cruise companies to offer add-ons such as three-day city packages of Amsterdam (pictured) prior to sailings along the Rhine, or wine-themed mini-breaks prior to Loire sailings.

The added extras are getting better

We’re increasingly keen to avoid crowds, and river cruises have cottoned on to this. They’re going all out to offer cruises year-round – not just during the summer (traditionally the busiest time for river cruises), but in April and May and September and October, when there will be fewer selfie sticks and thinner crowds to contend with. Pictured is Bratislava Castle rising above the Danube River in fall.

It's easier to avoid the crowds

<p>On ocean cruises, the excitement about seeing the local landmark/record-breaking attraction/ancient site quickly dissipates when there’s a one-hour bus journey between you and the site in question. Not so with river cruising, simply because of the increased accessibility. A great example is the iconic arch in St Louis, Missouri (pictured) –  this feat of engineering is just a 10-minute walk from the dock used by river boats.</p> <p><a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/156433/the-worlds-oldest-manmade-structures-still-in-use-today?page=1"><strong>Now check out the world's oldest man-made structures still in use today</strong></a></p>
