Lamy Safari Special Editions

Since 2004, each year  Lamy has produced at least one special colour for its popular  Safari model, and this is now a special annual event. In this article we list the special Safari colours and highlight some differences between these and regular production models. These special Safari colours are usually announced at Paperworld in Frankfurt in January and launched in April of each year and are only available for retailers to buy for a couple of months before production quantities are exhausted.

What's so special about the Lamy Safari?

The Lamy Safari is probably the best school pen available today. It has a tough ABS body, a simple cartridge filling system and is available with a wide choice of nibs. It was designed to be completely fit for purpose: a pen that will withstand the rough and tumble life of a school age child's everyday writing equipment. We'd even go as far as to suggest that the Lamy Safari is the best budget fountain pen produced today.

The triangulated grip of the Lamy Safari guides young writers hold the pen so that the nib is in the correct position relative to the paper. Its size is just right for a comfortable grip in both small and large hands and the light weight keeps writing fatigue to a minimum. A strong wire-hoop pocket clip completes the picture and this will ensure that the holder's precious pen stays securely attached to bag or pocket.

  • 2004 Royal Blue - red clip - red dot cap top - black nib
  • 2008 Lime - chrome clip - black cross cap top - steel nib
  • 2009 Orange - chrome clip - orange dot cap top - steel nib
  • 2009/10 Pink - chrome clip - pink dot cap top - steel nib
  • 2011 Aquamarine - chrome clip - aquamarine cross cap top - steel nib
  • 2012 Apple Green - chrome clip - green cross cap top - steel nib
  • 2013 Neon Yellow - chrome clip - black cross cap top - steel nib
  • 2014 Neon Coral - chrome clip -black cross cap top - steel nib
  • 2015 Neon Lime - chrome clip -black cross cap top - steel nib
  • 2016 Dark Lilac - black clip - -black cross cap top - black nib
  • 2017 Petrol - black clip - -black cross cap top - black nib

From 2014 onwards, a matching ink has been available in T10 cartridges and in 2016 (export markets only, not UK) and 2017 special bottles of ink were also produced alongside the cartridges. These special colour inks are very sought after, particularly in the T52 ink bottle .

Some colours become regular editions

Shock horror! A Special Edition turns into a regular catalogue item. The special editions for 2007 were gloss black and (gloss) white (not pictured). Both these colours became regular editions in 2008 and 2010 respectively. Later, in early 2014, the  Pink Safari reappeared as regular production but this time with a black cross on the end of the cap.

A couple of years on, in 2016, the  Apple Green Safari comes back but this time with a black cross cap end rather than the green cross cap end of the 2012 Apple Green Safari SE.

Gloss or Matt?

Most Safari Special Edition colours have had shiny gloss finishes, like the regular edition red, blue and yellow Safaris. There was a light grey version of the Safari that was produced prior to the 2004 blue/red Safari that had a matt "grain" finish like the Umbra - or Charcoal - Safari (model 17). However, until the Dark Lilac Lamy Safari of 2016 all Safari models have had a smooth gloss finish.

Lamy Safari barrels - gloss and matt

Lamy Safari barrels - Neon Yellow with gloss finish and Dark Lilac and Petrol with grain textured finish

The two original Lamy Safaris launched in 1980 were both textured finishes. Some suggest that the textured plastic stands up to wear and abuse better than the gloss finishes.

Nib and Clip Colour - black or steel

Lamy's approach has always been to match nib colour to clip colour, for both the Safari and  Lamy Al-Star ranges. Therefore, all the special colour Safaris pictured above have  plain steel coloured nibs to match their clips, with the exception of the Dark Lilac Safari of 2016 and Petrol Safari of 2017. The odd one out, of course, is the blue Safari with the red clip. Lamy has never produced a red nib so this model came equipped with a black nib . All Safaris have the Lamy Z50 nib, a part which is shared with most other Lamy fountain pens.

Collector's Items

Original Lamy Safaris in Savannah and Terracotta now change hands for the sort of sums that would buy you a high end fountain pen like a  Pelikan or Sailor . More recent Safari annual colours are not yet in that league but a 2008 Safari Lime or 2009 Safari Orange can now fetch several times its initial purchase price. Many unscrupulous sellers exploit buyers by charging heavy premiums on pens that are either still generally available or else are coming to the end of their supply but can easily be found at the normal price on many authorised retailers' websites or in their showrooms. One fact to point out is that, in Europe at least, Lamy only sells to retailers with a proper shop or showroom. If you come across an on-line dealer and you don't see photos of their showroom on their website then the Lamy pens they stock could be unauthorised grey imports, so buy elsewhere.

Whether to keep a new pen pristine and unused whilst speculating on its possible future value is always a hot topic amongst pen enthusiasts and collectors. Our advice? Just use and enjoy your pen (but of course look after it like like you would any or your possessions). If, in a few years time, it's worth as much or more than you paid for it then just consider that a bonus!

Lamy Safari Special Edition 2024

Lamy Safari Special Edition 2024

An icon of the writing world, the Lamy Safari continues its status as a beloved pen since its introduction in the 1980s. Although it’s considered a “beginner-friendly” pen, it enjoys a cult-like status from long-time pen enthusiasts worldwide. One of the reasons why the Safari continues to capture the attention of writers and thinkers is their yearly release of special edition colors.  Lamy pens are among the first that I ever collected, and always hold a special place in my heart.  This new Lamy Safari Special Edition 2024 is unique.  It’s one of the few Safaris that have two contrasting colors in the same pen.

Lamy Safari Special Edition 2024

First of all, the Lamy Safari Special Edition 2024 Kewi is a special edition fountain pen that was just released in February 2024. It has a two-toned design and is available in two versions: a Violet Blackberry and Pink Cliff color. Notably, the darker (more prominent tones) are contrasted with a brighter color for a stylish, modern twist.

Lamy Safari Special Edition 2024

Similarly, the Pink Cliff has a stony gray body – a matte-finished, grey-blue barrel and cap accented with black trim. A bold, pink grip section and top disc add a fun unpredictability to this otherwise conservative pen design.

Lamy Safari Special Edition 2024

Therefore, the Violet Blackberry has a dark, sleek barrel and cap accented with black trims. A violet matte-finished grip section and matches the color on top of the cap finial.

Lamy Safari Special Edition 2024

The pen is made with sturdy ABS plastic and has a spring-loaded clip.  The fountain pen has a black steel nib that glides on the page. Choose from: extra fine, fine, medium as standard options.  Call or email to find out about special order nib options.

Notably, this collection is also available in matching rollerball and ballpoint options.  The rollerball has the same friction fit cap as the fountain pen.  Refill it easily with the Lamy M63 rollerball refill. The ballpoint has a smooth click-action retraction mechanism.  Refill it easily with the Lamy M16 ballpoint refill.

Lamy builds the Safari from impact-resistant plastic, making the pen a robust companion that’s up to the task. The ergonomically shaped grip guides young writers and is generally comfortable to hold. A distinctive, u-shaped wire clip keeps your writing instrument securely fastened to pockets, pen loops, and notebook covers.

Lamy Safari Special Edition 2024

Finally, these inks are gorgeous.  I’d even say they’re easily the “stars of the show”.  Whether you order the T10 cartridges or the T52 bottled ink, you can’t go wrong.  As usual with Lamy bottled ink, you get tremendous value with the included blotter paper.  In addition, the bottle tapers down to a point so that you can reach every last drop of ink.

Lamy Safari All Black Review - Special Edition

Lamy safari all black review.

Few new pen releases command the attention of the entire world community of writers, pen enthusiasts, and collectors. The yearly Lamy Safari special edition release is one of those events that quickly becomes the hot topic of online forums, pen meetups, and social media.

In the video below, we're pleased to formally introduce you to the Lamy Safari special edition for 2018 - the wildest color that Lamy has ever introduced in their yearly limited piece - BLACK. ALL Black .

The Special Edition has a colorful past, including such vibrant releases as:

2013: Neon Yellow 2014: Neon Coral 2015: Neon Lime 2016: Dark Lilac 2017: Petrol (dark teal)

While pen enthusiasts and Lamy collectors were eager to roll out the red carpet for a colorful 2018 Safari, the announcement of "All Black" disappointed some. However, that doesn't appear to slow anyone down in snapping up these pens as soon as they were released in April.

Design and Features of the All Black Edition

All Black is stealthy. The body and cap have a textured matte finish similar to the Petrol, Dark Lilac, and Charcoal, which is also referred to as Umbra outside of the USA. The appearance is quite close to the Charcoal but paired up against one another, you can see there is a considerable difference. The All Black color is deeper, richer, and blacker than the Charcoal. The nib and clip are the same as the other black trim pens.

You might be surprised to hear that the main difference between the Charcoal and All Black isn't visible. The Charcoal has been an everyday staple of the Safari line for well over a decade. The All Black, on the other hand, is a special edition for only 2018. As with other special editions Lamy introduced, once it's gone, it's gone! That would be the reason why, five years from now, a new All Black in the original box will be selling for double the retail price on eBay.

As we've seen with the demand for Dark Lilac and Petrol , new collectors are eager to find older editions that have been discontinued. Will All Black go "in the black" and climb up in value over time? Let us know what you think in the comments.

If you prefer the sleek look of a glossy black, the regular edition L19BK with the silver clip & nib is an everyday favorite. It is fitted with the same LZ50 stainless steel nib, only the All Black is black-plated.

Writing Experience with the Lamy Safari All Black

Writing with the Lamy Safari All Black is the same, no-fuss quality that you would expect from the stalwart Safari line. The contoured grip section provides a secure perch for your fingers. The stainless steel nib drives around the page with great control and flow. The black-plating on the nib bears no influence on the reliable writing quality of this nib, a detail to keep in mind when discerning a fake Lamy from a genuine product.

Regardless if you're looking to purchase the All Black as a collectible or a daily writer, this Lamy special eedition fills both needs in one stealthy writing instrument. Click-top ballpoint pen and capped rollerball pen modes are also available to complete the collection. As opposed to the previous Dark Lilac & Petrol releases, there is no accompanying special edition ink that matches this pen. It's black, so you can always match it with the everyday Lamy black ink in either LT10 cartridge or LT52 bottled ink form.

How Does the Lamy Safari All Black Pen Write?

The Lamy Safari All Black Pen distinguishes itself with a performance that embodies precision and smoothness. Equipped with a stainless steel nib that glides effortlessly across paper, this pen ensures a seamless ink flow, eliminating the risk of skips or smudges. Its ergonomic design, highlighted by a contoured grip section, promises comfort for prolonged writing sessions. This pen is not just about aesthetics; it's a reliable tool for anyone who values the quality of their handwriting.

Is the Lamy Safari All Black Pen Worth the Investment?

Considering its design and functionality, the Lamy Safari All Black Pen represents a sound investment. Constructed from robust ABS plastic with a matte black finish, it's built to last while retaining its sophisticated appearance. The pen's special edition status adds to its allure, potentially increasing its value over time. Its compatibility with Lamy's LT10 cartridges and LT52 bottled ink further underscores its practicality and versatility. For those who prioritize durability, style, and writing excellence, this pen is a worthwhile acquisition.

Who Should Buy the Lamy Safari All Black Pen?

The Lamy Safari All Black Pen is an ideal choice for a broad spectrum of users. Professionals seeking a dependable and stylish writing instrument for the workplace will find it meets their needs. Writers and journal enthusiasts will appreciate its smooth ink delivery and ergonomic features, enhancing their writing experience. Moreover, its durability and ease of use make it suitable for students. Collectors, attracted by its special edition status, will also be keen to add this pen to their collections. In essence, it's a pen designed to appeal to anyone who values quality and style in their writing tools.

Looking For A List of Safari and Al-Star Colours and dates ...

I've done a really stupid thing.

Filled with the energy that only spring sunshine can bring, I took all my Lamy pens out of the wallets I had kept them in and filled a plan chest drawer (lined with GoPens corrugated sheets) by colour in a vaguely appealing rainbow order, Safari on one side of the drawer, Al-Star on the other. I am lucky enough to have virtually a complete set of both, apart from a few country-specific SEs, so as you can imagine they make a nice show.

However, waking up this morning it came to me that I now have only the haziest idea of when each pen was introduced, and wish to put them back in chronological order again. Someone, somewhere on the internet must have a handy page with all the pens in date order, - does anyone know where I can find it? I thought that there must be something in 'Interesting Lamy Links' sticky, but I can't see it.

I'm afraid without a picture, nobody can help you.

More seriously, I can't help but would have loved some eye candy!

AmandaW

There might be useful information in this thread

Well Lithium466, here's my colourful hodgepodge !

AmandaW - that was the first place I looked, but sadly it's a 39 page thread that's more of a discussion than a list. I'm hoping for something like a catalogue that I can just refer to and put my pens in order, perhaps a blog?

Collectors Item

From my personal database. You might have to use Google translate for some words. 😉

What a nice Lamy collection!

ErrantSmudge

This article from The Writing Desk has the Safari colors from 2004 (when the limited editions started, as stated in the article) to 2017:

https://www.thewritingdesk.co.uk/blog/articles/lamy-safari-special-editions

And Goulet Pens has an article with the Safari colors from 2011 to the present:

https://www.gouletpens.com/blogs/fountain-pen-blog/lamy-safari-special-edition-history

Astronymus - thank you so much for that - I think my Al-stars are pretty much sorted now, apart from the SE Glossy Red which you have reminded me I must get before it's too late!

Lithium 466 - thanks - it will be even better when in date order (although I will keep a picture of the rainbow arrangement).

ErrantSmudge - that is exactly what I was looking for - between those two links I should be able to get my complete list of Safaris. Were there no SEs between 2004  and 2008? At some point the standard yellow was reissued in a completely different shade, which didn't attract much attention at the time. I must track the details of that down.

Thank you everyone.

Excellent question, for which I don't know the answer.  The text of the Writing Desk article says that Glossy White and Glossy Black were the two special edition colors for 2007 - which aren't in their list and photo at the beginning of the article.  (They subsequently became part of the standard line of colors).

If I had to guess I would say there were SEs in 2005 and 2006 as well.   Sorry, I thought the list in that article was complete.

Should be easy enough to work out using posts on this forum - and of course if I find myself with a handful of pens left over when I put them in order that will be a big clue!

I've tried to attach this PDF of Safari special edition colors that I found a while back.  I don't remember where I found it so I cannot give proper attribution to its creator.

It does not list a special edition for 2005, but it does say for 2006 the special edition was the light blue with red clip - a very much sought-after model today.

LAMY safari Special Editions - Chronological overview.pdf

Thanks! Well, I've got them all, so by process of elimination I should be able to work it out.

The awful thing is that after a certain point I pretty much stopped using any of them, but continued to buy them anyway. That's when using turns to collecting. I bought a dark grey 'umbra' from the original release some time in the late 1970s or early 1980s , and it is the unicorn of the line - the fabled smooth / satin version.  Made I suspect, using a slightly different mould. I think it was about £7, and seemed very expensive at the time.

You're welcome. If you find any information my list is missing just send me a PM. 😉

The width and firmness of the nib, combined with the way you hold a pen, as well as your choice of ink and paper, will determine how the writing style of your pen will look. One of two special edition colors for 2024 in the kewi collection! This fountain pen features a matte blue-grey barrel and cap, with a pink finial and grip section. It's finished with black trim and a black clip.

The LAMY  safari is a workhorse pen, known throughout the fountain pen community for its ruggedness, reliability, and no-nonsense functionality. The triangular grip makes it great for those starting out who have no idea how to hold a fountain pen, but it's used and loved by fountain pen lovers of all levels of experience.

The  safari comes with an interchangeable black steel nib, which can be easily swapped out for another size. This fountain pen comes with a blue LAMY ink cartridge so you can get started writing right away.

If you'd like to use bottled fountain pen ink, you can also purchase a LAMY Z28 converter. Note: To ensure quality performance, LAMY tests their pens as a final step in manufacturing. If you happen to see any residual blue ink, rest assured that this is normal.

Tried and true pen

I purchased two Lamy fountain pens. Both write as soon as you put nib to paper. I really enjoy writing with them. Both fit my hand perfectly and are not fatiguing in any way. (I write long letters). When I'm writing with one of them, I'll often switch to the other one so I can use them both. The colours are beautiful. I'm really pleased with my pens.

User picture

I am enjoying my new LamyI don't try to be a collector, I just like good functional pens, and Lamy is perfect for my needs.

I had a bad experience using a Lamy pen from a Maido box (stationery box from Mitsuwa) and I thought all Lamy's were cheap, leaking pieces of junk. This pen writes like butter. I enjoy writing with it more than my Preppys or my Pilot Kakunos. Unless someone gives me an 'expensive' pen, I'm unlikely to buy one better than this.

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here .
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here .

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush , or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!

What's your return policy? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

To initiate a return, please submit a request at the Return Portal . Our Customer Care team might reach out to you for more information.

Please note we are unable to accept a return of any Namiki or Sailor Bespoke fountain pen for any reason once it has been used with ink. Please thoroughly inspect and dry test the pen before use.
