Self-Drive vs Tour Group

There are many ways to see Alaska, including a cruise, a self-drive road trip, or a guided tour. All of these options have their pros and cons. We usually prefer to do a self-drive trip and that’s why our itinerary is built for driving.

In the itinerary we’ve included some of our favorite day tours that you can partake in along the way, so it’s sort of a hybrid self/guided tour.

There are a lot of pre-organized tours you can take that will allow you to see it all without having to do any of the planning or logistics. That can be a really nice relaxing way to experience Alaska.

Here are a few guided tours we recommend:

 • Alaska 7-Day Brown Bear and Denali Adventure from Anchorage
 • 9-Day Ultimate Alaska Adventure

Are 7 Days in Alaska Enough?

While you could take a lifetime to explore every nook and cranny this region has to offer, an Alaska one-week itinerary is the perfect amount of time to travel and explore this region.

Filled with national parks and glaciers to explore, you’ll need at least 7 days to be able to get to all the top sights, but you can scratch off most of what you want to see in this amount of time.

A shorter trip in these snowy terrains might be an attractive choice, but you’ll either spend half the time traveling or only be able to see one or two spaces.

If you have 2 weeks to spare, you can either space this itinerary out and enjoy seeing more things in each location, or you can pack in more sights.

How to Get Around

From the fishing community of Sitka to the amazing things to do in Juneau , Alaska is known as the largest state in the US. Although spending your time in the snow-capped landscape is the ultimate draw of Alaska, you’ll have to come to terms with the fact that you’ll spend a lot of time on the road.

While touring this majestic area is possible with public transport, such as bus services and the Alaska Railroad for long-distance travel, renting a car is the more convenient option.

road trip in Alaska on a clody day

Whether you’re renting a small vehicle or opting for an RV road trip experience, you’ll be able to operate on your schedule and get to your destination much faster. Here are some basic rules that might apply when you rent a car in Alaska:

 • You need to be over 20 years old to rent a car (some car rental establishments also add an extra charge if you’re under 25).
 • Many agencies require you to return the vehicle with a full tank of gas and at the same city you rented it in (otherwise, a hefty charge will be added to your bill).
 • While visiting a car rental agency at the airport is an easy option, you should consider trying a local establishment instead to potentially cut down on costs.

7 Day Alaska Itinerary: Day-to-Day Guide

With a keen sense of adventure and a hidden stash of road trip snacks, you can tour the winding paths of Alaska in style and comfort.

From the historic center of Anchorage all the way to the icy pleasures of the Matanuska Glacier, this sanctuary of simple living is a unique setting to explore. Take a look at your Alaska road trip itinerary to prepare yourself for the experience of a lifetime.

Here is a list of the best places to stay in Alaska to help you find great hotels along the way.

Day 1 & 2: Anchorage and Talkeetna

The moment your touch down at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, you’ll encounter the homey charm of Alaska’s largest city. Filled with amazing museums and animal-dotted parks, Anchorage is the place to start your one week in Alaska with a bang.

To ensure some rest before trekking the riveting roads of Alaska, you can spend some time in this city to get your bearings and dip your toe into what this state offers.

To get a taste of Alaska’s beautiful biodiversity, you can take a trip to the Alaska Botanical Garden to get your fill of this state’s greenery in a controlled setting. From whimsical wildflower trails to a heritage garden, this space will have all nature lovers swoon from its lush plains.

For a walk on the arty side, you can go to the Anchorage Museum to experience a fantastic array of cultural and historic-centered exhibits and activities.

Whether you’re looking to see a dazzling display of Alaskan heritage pieces or looking to attend a pop-up concert, this space will have you enchanted from start to finish.

On the second day, you can slowly make your way to the charming little town of Talkeetna to cut a few hours of your driving to the next destination on your Alaska road trip planner. This pit stop is worth the visit, from dog sledding to enjoying its rustic edges.

Day 3 & 4: Denali National Park

Denali Park mountain range reflecting in the lake

Start the day early by heading down to Denali National Park , which takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes to get there, for two days of epic exploration of Alaska’s rugged beauty. From the highest peak of Mount Mckinley to the depths of Wonder Lake, this space always has something new to explore. No trip to this picturesque park is the same, as the various seasons transform this natural setting into a different landscape each season. From the icy adventures of snowshoeing in winter to frolicking through wildflowers in spring, Denali Park provides a diverse set of outdoor activities.

flowers blooming in Denali National Park

With only one road in Denali National Park, you’ll only be able to travel a short distance in the park itself, and the rest can be explored through either guided or free bus trips.

The various bus routes you choose are dependent on what you’re looking to include in your trip, like hiking or ranger excursions, so be sure to plan ahead of time.

Various designated camping areas are speckled inside the park and are the perfect opportunity to test your wilderness skills and sleep under a blanket of stars.

If you’re looking to extend your stay to search for the elusive illuminating wonder of the northern lights, you can embark on a guided tour near the vicinity. With expert photography tips and a warm drink in hand, you’ll be able to capture this prism-colored event in full throttle.

 • Denali Experience Flightseeing Tour from Talkeetna
 • Denali Park Zipline Adventure
 • Wilderness Wave

Day 5: Palmer

misty view of Palmer mountain range of Chugach mountains

On this day, you’ll have to embrace the long drive to your next destination (around three hours and 39 minutes, so be sure to delve into some car games to pass the time).

Once you get to Palmer, you’ll be able to experience the down-to-earth charm of farm life. Interestingly, this town was initially founded as a social experiment according to the New Deal implemented in 1935.

Amongst the beautiful backdrop of the Chugach Mountains, remnants of the past can still be seen amongst the scenery, such as the Colony House Museum. The house itself celebrates Alaska’s rich heritage and displays the appearance of a family home during colonial times.

If you find yourself in the town’s vicinity in late August, you’ll be able to catch the stately splendors of the Alaska State Fair. Filled with prized produce and a lively atmosphere, you’ll be able to celebrate the many farm-fresh finds of the season like a true local!

Another quaint attraction peppered along the way is the fuzzy haven of the Musk Ox Farm near Palmer. With a tour that explores the ins and outs of farm life, you’ll have a blast getting a close encounter with these musky mammals.

Day 5 & 6: Seward & Surrounds

Seward and its surroundings are the final unexplored destination of your best Alaska road trip, with another epic day of driving along the way. While the long-distance (approximately just above three hours long) might be quite taxing, you can stop at these locations along the way to stretch your legs:

 • A quick hike at Flattop mountain – Known as one of the most popular mountain peaks to hike, this 3-mile walk along nature might be the perfect break from driving.
 • Take a gander at a glacier – While you’re driving along the Seward Highway, you can take the Herman Leirer Road to make your way to the Exit Glacier of Kenai Fjords National Park . This glacier is a frosty natural wonder to witness as this wall of ice appears like a flowing river stuck in time by a frozen embrace.

Known for its sensational scenery and its saltwater salmon, the nautical escape of Seward is a must-see when visiting Alaska, from the bobbing boats at Seward Waterfront to the bellowing calls of whales at Kenai Fjords National Park.

Kenai Fjords National Park icy mountain range view

One of the main attractions in the salty-aired region is the marine animal marvel of the Alaska SeaLife Center. This excursion will not disappoint; whether you’re ready to feel the squishy creatures at the Discovery Pool or looking to wave to seals at their enclosure, this excursion will not disappoint.

 • Kenai Fjords and Resurrection Bay Half-Day Wildlife Cruise
 • Exit Glacier Ice Hiking Adventure from Seward

Day 7: Drive Back to Anchorage

To make sure you don’t rush to the airport in early morning haste, you can use your last day to stay one more night in the lovely Anchorage. You can slowly make your way back during the day and visit various attractions that will be the perfect end to your trip.

These anchorage itinerary activities include the stately woodland quarters of Alaska Native Heritage Center and the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail.

Essential Planning Tips for Your Alaska Itinerary 7 Days

Best time to visit alaska.

Travelling to Alaska is highly influenced by its distinct seasons, including winter, spring, fall, and summer. Each season offers a unique experience to visitors, making it worthwhile to explore Alaska in different colours.

In general, the optimal time to visit Alaska is from May to September, during the summer season. This period offers a multitude of open activities, bustling attractions, and the opportunity to witness the enchanting phenomenon of the midnight sun. If you plan to take boat trips in Kenai Fjords , it is advisable to make advance reservations as cruises and boat excursions tend to sell out quickly during the summer months.

Additionally, it is important to note that hotel rates in Alaska tend to be higher during the busy summer season. However, you can mitigate this by booking your accommodations well in advance. By securing your lodging ahead of time, you can take advantage of better prices and ensure a comfortable stay during your visit to Alaska. If your interests lie in dog sledging, skiing, and witnessing the mesmerizing Northern Lights, I highly recommend planning your trip to Alaska during the winter season. This period offers the ideal conditions to indulge in winter-based activities and capture the beauty of the Northern Lights.

Health & Safety

With a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate, you can enter the state of Alaska. Since this is uncertain and no one can predict unforeseen situations – I recommend you stay updated with these COVID-19 guidelines . I’ll also keep this section as updated as possible to provide accurate information on any travel restrictions.

How much does it cost

An approximate cost of this 7-day Alaska itinerary will be around $1800-$2100 . However, the prices of this tour will be heavily dependent on the activities you book experiences you indulge in and the kind of accommodation you select. Through our partnership programs with various travel companies, we make it easy for you to book preferred activities & entry-ticket fees at much cheaper costs.

Detailed 7 Day Alaska Itinerary

Day 1: juneau.

Arrive at Juneau.

Juneau, a beloved town in Alaska, serves as an excellent starting point for this exciting Alaskan journey. Many visitors exploring Alaska via cruise ships make it a pit stop during their voyage. Travellers often disembark in Juneau, take a few hours to wander around the town, and then return to their ship.

However, the Alaskan capital deserves more than just a fleeting visit. It’s a destination that rewards those who take the time to explore its wonders at a leisurely pace. Juneau’s landscapes seem to stretch out endlessly, encompassing snow-capped peaks, gushing streams, vibrant bursts of wildflowers, and vast scenic routes.

While intrepid adventurers may delve deep into the stunning settings of Glacier Bay National Park and Admiralty Island National Monument, even leisure-focused travellers will find eye-catching scenery right at Juneau’s doorstep.

During your time in Juneau, you will have the opportunity to explore two of the most renowned glacier routes: Mendenhall Glacier and Tracy Arm Fjord. This impressive start to our 7-day Alaska itinerary will ensure that you make the most of your travel experience in the capital city.

Juneau City | 7 Day Alaska Itinerary

Located just 12 miles away from Juneau, Mendenhall Glacier stands as one of the most popular and frequently visited glaciers in Alaska. Drawing in around 400,000 tourists annually, its appeal extends beyond its mesmerizing arctic beauty, leaving visitors captivated by its grandeur.

Both Adventure Bound Alaska and Allen Marine Tours operate frequent excursions to Mendenhall Glacier. Upon your arrival, you will be presented with a 15-minute short film showcasing its stunning landscape, features, and other characteristics. With the help of a forest ranger, you can select from a range of trails to explore Mendenhall. This lets you discover the world’s only ‘drive-up’ glacier excitingly.

Among the notable trails in the area, such as Nugget Falls, Photo Point Trail, and Steep Creek Trail, the East Glacier Trail stands out as a personal favorite and comes highly recommended. This trail not only provides stunning vistas of the glacier and icebergs but also offers the chance to spot whales and other wildlife along the way, making it a truly memorable experience.

To make the most of your 7-day Alaska itinerary, I recommend opting for a 5-hour guided excursion that encompasses a visit to Mendenhall Glacier. This comprehensive package includes your entry ticket to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, convenient roundtrip transfers, snacks, and the expertise of a knowledgeable guide.

Day 2: Juneau

Today, you will take a deep-dive exploration tour of Tracy Arm Fjord, a magnificent 27-mile-long glacier. Considered a grander and more dramatic counterpart to Juneau’s Mendenhall Glacier, Tracy Arm Fjord offers its own exceptional viewpoints and scenic wonders.

Tour of Tracy Arm Fjord

Board the 56′ Adventure Bound cruise to journey across the narrow waterways of Tracy Arm. You will observe cliffs rising up to 3,000 feet and waters gushing down the steep rock walls on both sides. You can easily spot whales, eagles, bears, and seals in the summer season.

Visitors who have already experienced Tracy Arm described this glacial beauty as “ breath-taking ” and often recommend carrying a good set of binoculars and a camera to capture the scene.

Cruising the Tracy Arm Fjord | 7 Day Alaska Itinerary

The only thing you need to be mindful of is the cruise ship departing for Tracy Arm Fjord gets booked real fast. Seats are limited and it’s advisable to reserve your spot at least a month prior to your trip. For more info, you can check this tour operator’s website .

Day 3: Juneau – Skagway

Today, you’ll depart Juneau to drive across to another beautiful town – Skagway.

The journey from Juneau to Ketchikan covers approximately 103 miles and typically takes around 6 hours to complete. However, the drive itself is a mesmerizing experience as you pass through scenic coastal villages and towns along the way.

Skagway is a stunning and historically significant city that takes great pride in showcasing its gold rush tales in a contemporary manner. While meandering through its charming streets, visitors will have the opportunity to uncover numerous captivating walks and trails that lead to enchanting corners of the town.

Furthermore, it won’t be long before you stumble upon Skagway’s prominent attractions, namely the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park Visitors Centre , the Arctic Brotherhood Hall , and the Martin Itjen House .

Walking the streets of Skagway

To truly savour the essence of Skagway, there’s no better way than embarking on leisurely walking tours. These guided excursions allow you to delve deeper into the city’s intriguing history and lose yourself in the historic tales of the gold rush era, all while being treated to breathtaking views of the town.

Overnight at Skagway.

Day 4: Skagway

Highlights of Skagway.

Today, you will be exploring Skagway’s best attractions by going on a few excursions. This in-depth exploration will introduce the town’s remarkable history, incredible landscape, and pleasing culture.

Chilkoot Trail Hike and Float Tour

Hiking on the Chilkoot Trail give visitors an excellent opportunity to retrace the pathway carved by the Klondike Goldminers of 1898 . This trail winds its way through the Alaskan rainforest of Chilkoot, offering a two-mile stretch filled with lush greenery.

After completing the hike, you can try on a relaxed rafting tour down the Taiya River , where you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the glacial mountains. As you leisurely float along the river, keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area, including eagles soaring gracefully above and seals playfully leaping in the water.

The Chilkoot Trail is meant for active travellers with an average fitness level to complete the stretch. It includes uphill and a few strenuous paths. However, you can easily tackle it – with the help of an expert to guide you your way.

White Pass Summit and Yukon Suspension Bridge

No visit to Skagway would be complete without embarking on an excursion to the White Pass Summit. This tour is an absolute must for first-time visitors, offering a thrilling opportunity to experience Alaskan adventure.

The White Summit is a wonderland, adorned with stunning forests, azure lakes, and majestic peaks. This remarkable region proudly displays its dramatic scenery, often leaving travellers entranced by its exquisite beauty. If you book a guided excursion to White Summit – you will get an ample amount of time to enjoy the viewpoints located.

Continuing beyond the Summit, you’ll discover the Yukon Suspension Bridge, a remarkable vantage point that offers breathtaking views of the rushing Tutshi River. Accompanied by a knowledgeable naturalist guide, you can further explore the alpine wildflowers that grace the surroundings, gaining a deeper understanding of the flora that thrives in this pristine landscape.

Explore the Glacier Bay, National Park.

Glacier Bay stands apart from America’s iconic national parks like Yellowstone or Yosemite, exuding a unique charm that entices travellers. Nestled in a remote location, it boasts a distinctiveness that sets it apart from the mighty landscapes of its counterparts. With no road connection, embarking on a journey to Glacier Bay becomes an exhilarating adventure, offering a once-in-a-lifetime Alaskan experience.

As its name suggests, Glacier Bay is a haven for over 1,000 glaciers , making it a mesmerizing destination for visitors. For those travelling by ship, the experience becomes even more fascinating as you hop on a journey to explore the park’s nine colossal tidewater glaciers. 7 day Alaska Itinerary: The Perfect One Week in Alaska {2024}

There is a really good chance that this post contains affiliate links. If you click through and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission (for which I am deeply grateful) at no additional cost to you.

Alaska is a state in the US full of history, wildlife, nature, picturesque views, architecture and great food. What’s not to love about this combo? Are you wondering what to see in Alaska? f you only had one week in Alaska, here is a 7 day Alaska itinerary with the best things to do in Alaska (your “must do” list.)

alaska tour 7 days

Alaska, the last frontier, is one of the two states which have no territorial contact with the continental USA , other being Hawaii. But what makes Alaska stand out of all the other 49 states is the display of nature. From stunning landscapes to untamed wildlife and majestic glaciers to pristine springs, Alaska has it all.

And even during the winters when mother nature covers every corner with a blanket of snow and sends all wildlife into hibernation, the skies put up a free but incomparable light show every night, from the month of September through April, with Aurora Borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights.

Alaska also called as The Last Frontier, is the largest and the most sparsely populated of all the other states in the USA. Alaska was a part of the Russian empire until 1867 when it was bought by the USA at a mere two cents per acre (still a lot in today’s money though) and was later inducted as the 49th state. Because of its geographical location, Alaskans refer to the continental USA as ‘the lower 48s’.

Even though Anchorage is the largest city, Juneau is the capital located in the fiords of the Glacier Bay National Park reserve and is only connected through air or waterways.

Best time to Visit Alaska:

The most popular months to visit Alaska begins in May with season-ending in September and the two most popular ways of experiencing the wilderness and tundra are by trains or driving through the state which boasts of the most scenic freeways in the entire country.

alaska_railroad

No matter how hassle-free the train rides may be, and even though they offer panoramic sunroofs, we still preferred an Alaska road trip as it gave us a lot of liberty to detour. Hence, the following is a complete 7-day road trip itinerary through Alaska on an RV (which can also be done by renting a car).

If you are new to RV there are things to know before renting your RV and also ensure your RV rental company allows you to drive on gravel or unpaved road as not all rentals allow their vehicles to be taken on unpaved roads. Go North RV rentals are one of the companies who allow gravel road driving.

7 Day In Alaska Itinerary: The perfect 7 days in Alaska

Day 1 – anchorage.

Anchorage is the largest and the most popular city in Alaska and is easily mistaken as the capital city. A major commercial port and a very common stopover for trans pacific flights. Also, Anchorage is one of the very few cities in the world to have a huge wildlife population including around 1500 Moose, around 250 Black Bears and almost 60 Brown Bears within its city limits.

Arrive at Anchorage and ensure you have your stay booking covered. Depending on the time of the day and the availability of your RV, you will have to plan accordingly. Our arrival in Anchorage was in the evening, hence we decided to spend the night in a hostel.

There are plenty of stay options to choose from in Anchorage depending on your preference and if you have already secured your RV, you may choose to either pull up to free or reasonably charged RV parking at the AC Couplet on the 3rd Avenue between A and C street, the terminal parking lot at the Alaska Railroad depot or at designated RV parking spots at any shopping malls which are free. Eg: Walmart or Fred Meyers.

A good idea here would be to stock up groceries before you crash as it will save you time the next day. But if you may end up like us, it is always suggestible to pass out early at your accommodation after early dinner and start early the next day and acquire your RV as early as possible.

If you are feeling adventurous you can always book some attractions in Anchorage:

Day 2 – Drive to Denali National Park

– The distance between Anchorage to Denali National Park Visitor Centre: 239 miles or 385 km.

– Time to Denali National Park Visitor Centre: Up to 4 hrs and 15 minutes if driven non-stop.

– Highway name and number: Glenn Highway (Alaska 1) and change to Parks Highway (Alaska 3) at the Glenn/Parks interchange.

Check our post about the best hiking trips in The USA !

Things to see en route to Denali National Park:

There are beautiful things to see between Anchorage and Denali National Park which are accessible by a minor detour through the Old Glenn Highway or maybe a short hike.

Eagle River Nature Centre

A detour east of the Glenn Highway, through the town of Eagle River, about 13 miles or 21 km on the Eagle River road will lead you to this nature centre where there is a display of natural history and self-guided nature trails where one of them leads to a stunning viewpoint which will give you a gist of what Alaska has to offer.

Note: Be mindful, the trails here have high bear spotting, so be careful when in the woods.

Heading back in the same direction you came in should take you back to the Glenn highway.

eagle_river

Mirror Lake Municipal Park

Heading up north after a short drive at milepost 23.6, take a quick exit to Mirror Lake. Located at the foot of Mount Eklutana, Mirror Lake has an abundance of rainbow trout and king salmon which makes it famous fishing and great photo spot if it is not windy, that’s when the lake lives up to its name.

Thunderbird Falls

After you return to the freeway, a 1.5 mile or 2.4 km drive will lead you to the exit for Thunderbird Falls. From the exit follow the signs to less than a minute’s drive to Thunderbird falls trail.

An easy 1 mile or 1.6 km trail will lead you to the falls viewpoint. Exercise caution as there are steep cliffs just off the trail. Again, watch for bears.

Recommended: 8 best road trips from Phoenix AZ

Thunderbird_falls

Eklutana Lake

The largest lake in the Chugach State Park, the lake is used to generate hydro-electric power at the Eklutana plant, and also provides for a drinking water source for Anchorage and is also a popular fishing spot.

To reach here, you will have to exit Glenn Highway towards Eklutana Lake Road and it is about 9.5 miles or 15.3 km east will lead you to the parking area for Eklutana Tailrace. From here it’s a short 20-minute walk to the super scenic lake shore.

eklutana_lake

After you finish these four spots, prepare for a fairly long drive towards Denali visitor Centre. Be mindful to change to the Northbound Parks Highway at the Denali-Parks Interchange.

Another quick diversion off the Parks Highway at milepost 135 will bring you to Denali View Point which offers a splendid panoramic view of Mt McKinley, North America’s highest peak, to which we get much closer on day two.

At this point, you should be about 76 miles or 122 km, a drive of approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes from Denali Visitor Centre. If you feel tired driving, the Denali Viewpoint may be a good spot to retire overnight but you may have to start really early the next morning for your Denali Wonderlake Transit or Kantishna Transit, about which we will elaborate on our plan for Day 2.

Otherwise, it is also suggestible to finish this journey and pull over to Riley Creek Campground which is just at the entrance road to Denali National Park and takes just a couple of minutes to drive to Denali Visitor Centre.

Day 3 – Denali Wonder Lake Transit or Kantishna Transit

This day will offer you a good break from all the driving you must have done the previous day. Today you just sit back and enjoy the ride and the views.

It is highly recommended to book Denali Transit or Tour tickets in advance as they are highly popular, and also because 65% of the seats are up for grabs online and the remaining 35% of the seats are available over the counter up to two days in advance on a first come first serve basis.

denali_transit_bus

The transit system is designed to transport visitors from point A to B with adequate narrations from the driver himself, they make enough stops for landscape photography and wildlife viewing. But it’s a scheduled service and the drivers need to stay on schedule.

However, if you are looking for narration and deeper knowledge about your Denali experience, you may also look for other interpretative tours on their website and may choose to book one for yourself. Both the transit and interpretative tours run the same route though.

Why choose the transit – The Transit system works like a hop-on-hop-off service. When the weather conditions are safe, the driver will be happy to let you off the bus to let you hike, bike, experience the wilderness and the landscapes all by yourself and reboard a later scheduled bus. Also, the transit tickets cost less than half of narrated tours.

Another Favorite: A historical road trip from Tennessee to Virginia

mt_denali

Below are the two tours we recommend which will allow you to soak into the heart of Denali National Park to the maximum.

Wonder Lake (85 Miles or 137 km One Way – 11 hours Round Trip) – Wonder lake was formed by retreating glaciers offers visitors stunning views of the Alaska and Denali Range. Plenty of small ponds on the way visited often by waterfowls and wildlife.

Kantishna (92 Miles or 148 km One Way – 13 hours Round Trip) – This route covers the whole of the Wonder Lake route plus another 7 miles till the truly “End of the road” within the Denali National Park and Reserve and will also bring you closer to Reflection Lake which can be a stunning natural mirror if the weather permits. Kantishna was once a mining district but now primarily a destination for guests visiting the privately owned Kantishna lodges, and serves as an access point for backcountry campers.

stunning_denali_landscapes

We cannot emphasize enough on the fact that the buses run on a schedule, thus ensure that you return to your own bus on the time the driver tells you to. On our trip, a big group of people missed their bus at a point with their belongings inside the bus without the driver’s knowledge.

After the group realized, they had one of the park authorities radio in the bus driver and have their belongings sent back with another bus which was on its way back.

Also, there are no food facilities inside Denali National Park except a water facility at The Eielson Visitor Centre, hence carry plenty of food and water for yourself and make use of the washroom facilities whenever the driver tells you to as there aren’t many inside the national park.

denali_national_park

By the time you finish your trip, it will be evening. You may choose to pull over to Reiley’s Camp Ground again or boondock anywhere suitable and call it a day.

Quick Tip – Make use of the dump and water station at the Reiley’s Camp Ground to empty your waste tanks and fill potable water.

denali_national_park_and_reserve

Points to Remember:

1) There will be an additional $20 fee to enter the Denali National Park area.

2) There are campgrounds inside the Denali National Park, we highly recommend, to have an advance booking, as these campgrounds are very popular amongst backpackers.

3) If you plan to stay in the campgrounds ensure you have your camping gears.

4) Carry clothes suitable for all kinds of temperatures, as the weather here is quite unpredictable.

5) If you plan to camp ensure you have enough food and water to survive until your stay.

6) Bear encounters are very common. Hence, camping here is not for weak hearted tourists like me.

grizzley_bear_at_denali_national_park

7) You may read a lot of articles about bear sprays, but we would not recommend using one as you may agitate them more.

8) During summers, Alaskan tundras are swarmed with insects. Carry a face net if you don’t want insects as appetizers.

Day 4 – Drive to Fairbanks:

Distance from Rieley’s Camp Ground to Fairbanks: 124 miles or 200 km and should take approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

nenana_river__2_

Today will be a fairly easy day as we drive to Fairbanks, the northernmost city of Alaska and of course, the whole of USA.

nenana_river

Hence, on day 3, time is not a concern allowing you to take as many photography stops as you wish and trust us when we say you will need a lot of stopovers. Ensure to make a stop at the Nenana River Bridge for a great photo opportunity.

us_at_nenana_river

Once you reach Fairbanks, the most famous and convenient place to boondock is at the Walmart Fairbanks which has plenty of dedicated RV parking slots. Be mindful of the season you are visiting though.

We found plenty of available parking as we visited almost at the end of the season in September, but the scenario may be different in high season. However, before you settle for the night, let’s go around Fairbanks to see what it has to offer.

Fairbanks is the second most populous city in the state of Alaska after Anchorage. Though it is not as big in size, there are plenty of attractions to look out for in Downtown Fairbanks.

You might also enjoy this: What makes a road trip in New Zealand the perfect holiday ( Self-drive Itinerary included)

Fairbanks Ice Museum

This place is a must-visit as I am sure locally made ice sculptures are not an everyday sight for everyone. It is very interesting to see how ice sculptures carve out niche designs out of huge blocks of ice.

Even more interesting for me was to see how they preserved in even in summers. The whole facility where the sculptures are displayed is maintained at an average of below -20ºC or -4ºF to simulate the sub-zero temperatures of the winters.

fairbanks_ice_museum

Pioneer Park

Located along the Chena River, Pioneer Park commemorates early Alaskan History with numerous museums and historic artifacts display. The park is open all year long and does not charge any entrance fee, though there are entrance fees for many museums and attractions.

And how could we forget the world’s favorite Santa Claus’ town of North Pole? This town is an absolute treat for kids. A quick 20 minutes drive southbound from downtown Fairbanks on the Alaska 2, also called the Richardson Highway, will lead you to this lovely town of North Pole.

me_at_santa_clause_house__north_pole__alaska

Immensely popular for The Santa Clause House, this place boasts of Christmas all year around. There is a huge Santa statue right outside this place and once you step inside, the funnyman is there himself, ever ready to share a laugh and click photos. I

f you are looking for something very traditional, their original Santa Letters have been delivered to people of all ages all around the world for generations.

santa claus north pole alaska

Also do visit the reindeer park just outside Santa Claus House. After this, you may plan to return to your parking spot in Fairbanks and call it a night after dinner.

Caribou_at_Santa_Clause_House__North_Pole

Quick tip for dinner – If you are fond of American diners, Fairbanks has the world’s northernmost Denny’s Restaurant and the locator sign outside the restaurant also has a huge board mentioning the world’s northernmost Denny’s.

You can also park your RV at the huge rear parking and the Sourdough Gas Station at the junction of Johansen Expressway and Danby Street has a free dump and water station facility.

Day 5 – Drive to the Arctic Circle Sign: The Dalton Highway:

Today we will drive northbound through the Alaska 11, popularly known as the Dalton Highway and today will be the day when we get to use the gravel road permission from your RV rental company.

Firstly let’s get started with a short history and some key rules of driving on the Dalton Highway.

The James Dalton Highway or Alaska 11 starts at the town of Livengood, approximately 74 miles/119 km north of the city of Fairbanks, and ends at Prudhoe Bay covering a distance of 427 miles/ 687 km one way.

Named after an arctic engineer James William Dalton who was involved in the early oil exploration on the North Slope, the highway was built to facilitate the construction of the Trans Alaskan Pipeline and to reach supplies to Prudhoe Bay.

Today, it is still majorly used by heavy trucks all around the year as they bring essential supplies to all the communities along the Dalton Highway.

In spite of regular efforts to maintain this road, the majority of the highway still remains a gravel road due to the extremes of temperatures it has to sustain.

Moving on to the key rules and things to remember before starting your journey:

 • Ensure that you are fully stocked up on fuel, drinking and potable water and groceries before you leave Fairbanks as services are few on the Dalton Highway.
 • Also, keep in mind that you must allow plenty of time for your journey through this highway as driving slow and with extreme caution will be of the essence. Hit a pothole or encounter a hairpin bend when going too fast and all the adventure might just go down the drain.
 • Always drive with your headlamps on and when you spot a truck, indicate and pull over or slow down. In response, they usually slow down and minimize the chances of a chipped windshield from flying gravel.

Follow these simple guidelines, and you should have a memory of a lifetime driving on the Dalton Highway.

Dalton Highway popular photo stop

Starting your journey from Fairbanks, head northbound on the Eliott Highway/Alaska 2 for 74 miles/119 km till the junction at Livengood where the Dalton Highway starts.

A sign at milepost 1.1 marks the beginning of the Dalton Highway and is a popular photo stop for all tourists.

start_of_the_Dalton_Highway

Exercise extra caution for the first 30 minutes of driving on the Dalton Highway and get a taste of the challenges you may encounter.

Hard to miss, the Trans Alaskan Pipeline will be your travel companion for two days and remember that parking in front of the access gates for the pipeline is illegal.

view_of_the_Trans_Alaskan_Pipeline_from_the_Dalton_Highway

Take as many stops along the way as driving here needs a lot of concentration and after 135 miles/217 km, you will reach the Yukon River crossing. After crossing the bridge northbound, turn left for the Yukon River Camp which is one of the very few fuel and minor service station on the Dalton Highway.

There is also a restaurant which changes to “The Noodle House” through the winter and serves Chinese style soups and sandwiches. The next gas station northbound is at Coldfoot, 119 miles/191.5 km far.

Turning right after crossing the bridge will drive you under the pipeline for BLM (Bureau of Land Management) Yukon Crossing Visitor Contact Station. This centre is staffed by volunteers and is open only during summers from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M.

There are pit toilets, parking spaces and an observation deck to view the Yukon river and bridge allowing for a great photo opportunity.

yukon river crossing

If you are visiting during the summers, a quick 4 miles/6.5km drive northbound from Yukon river camp will bring you to the exit for the Hot Spot Cafe. A stop you shouldn’t miss as they are famous for their food and dining experience with the Ice Road Truckers. They have the biggest collection of Arctic Circle souvenirs and Ice Road trucking gifts.

Another 38 miles/61 km drive northbound brings you to the Finger mountain, a formation of rocks which seems like a huge finger sticking out of the ground. Another great photo opportunity and after this we reach our destination.

Just after milepost 115, a well-signed turnoff will reach you at the Arctic Circle sign. This is where the geographical Arctic Circle crosses and a huge signboard with big blue earth and the latitude 66º33’N on it.

arctic_circle_sign

If you can plan to visit precisely on June 22, the sun will not set on you here due to the summer solstice and on December 22, there is no sunrise due to the winter solstice.

Take as many photos here as you have totally earned yourself an achievement of driving safely for 194 miles/312 km on one of the most challenging highways in the world.

behind_the_arctic_circle_sign

We take it easy for the rest of the day and can park overnight at the nearby campground which is a short drive through the unpaved road heading east, or can start driving back for just 8 miles/12.8 km where there is a huge leveled parking area to the east named Old Man Camp.

There is no signage though. This used to be a construction camp but it’s just a huge piece of land offering panoramic views during the day. And if you visiting Alaska at the end of the season in September as we did, some luck and clear skies will show you the magnificent Northern Lights.

Suggested Reading: Best Spots to See the Northern Lights in Iceland

northern_lights

Spending the night at such a place may feel scary or unsafe, but trust us, it will be worth the experience and you may have some company of other adventurists as we did. Also, driving on the Dalton Highway through the night is highly discouraged for reasons you should have figured out by now.

northern lights alaska

Day 6 – Drive back to Fairbanks

It is always suggestible to start early and drive the same way back. If you need to fill gas, the Yukon river camp can be a good option or if you think there is enough gas left with you, drive all the way back and make use of the Hilltop Truck Stop on the Elliott Highway just 5.5 miles/8.8 km short of the town of Fox, as fuel is much cheaper here than anywhere on the Dalton Highway.

Or if you have some more fuel left, drive at the way to the Sourdough Gas station in Fairbanks which was previously mentioned for a total servicing of your RV.

As now our itinerary will take us back to Anchorage, you may suit yourself to spend the night at Fairbanks or drive further southbound on the Parks Highway towards Anchorage.

As the night sets in, pull over to any turnout you may choose and call it a night and this is what you may wake up to.

a_morning_after_boon_docking_near_fairbanks

Day 7 – Pay a visit to Talkeetna on your way to Anchorage

Today on our return drive to Anchorage, we will take a small diversion from the Parks Highway, just after distance marker southbound shows Anchorage 98 miles. Less than a quarter mile from here, you should reach Talkeetna Y junction and 14 miles northbound the road ends at the community of Talkeetna.

Talkeetna began as a district headquarters for the Alaskan Railroad back in 1916 and has now evolved as a major tourist attraction during the summers. A beautiful town to walk around and spend a couple of hours after which we continue on the remainder of our road trip, a distance of 113 miles/182 km to Anchorage which should take just over 2 hours.

Depending on the time you reach Anchorage, you may choose to park your RV at a suitable place or maybe check-in your RV with the rental company like we had to and head to downtown Anchorage.

The state of Alaska has a lot of breweries and if you are a beer fan, their brews are to fall in love with. The most famous being the 49th State Brewing Company at 717 W 3rd Avenue.

Hands down, they serve one of the best brews we have ever tasted. Needless to say, their food menu totally compliments their brews and if you have spent a good time here, all you will seek after this is your bed.

49th_State_Brewery_Alaska

Depending on your departure out of Anchorage, you could spend some more time at Downtown Anchorage visiting their museums, do some souvenir shopping or maybe hire a bike and hit the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail easily accessible from Downtown Anchorage.

This 11 miles/17.7 km trail runs along the Pacific coast, runways of the Ted Steven’s International Airport and many other scenic landscapes and will leave your heart filled with the essence of Alaska before we take off for our journey back home.

Exceeded expectations, everything was smooth. Great guide.
We had a fabulous adventure! Loved our time in Alaska! Better than expected. Trip ran like clockwork.
It was a very fun and adventuresome trip. The tour guide was well organized and hard working. The only problem was one of the camp sites was pretty primitive compared with the "KOA-style" campgrounds advertised by the company.

Epic 7 Day Alaska Itinerary: Denali & Seward

What do you want to see in Alaska? If you want to see wildlife, glaciers, Denali National Park, amazing scenery, and more, then take a look at my itinerary for ideas!

A dream trip for many has to be Alaska. It definitely was for me, and I finally was able to make it happen as my honeymoon. I wanted to see glaciers, amazing scenery, and all the wildlife . If you also want to visit, then this 7 day Alaska itinerary can be the starting point for planning your own trip.

When planning your trip to Alaska, there’s one thing you have to understand right off the bat. This is a BIG state. Like, even if they might look ”close” on the map, it could still take you several hours to go from one stop to the next. And a one week trip means you’ll be able to visit like 2ish places due to the time it takes to travel between them.

More than 2(ish) places, and you’ll be spending all of your time in a car/bus/train, instead of out in Alaska.

So when doing my research, there were two places that stuck out to me. The first being Denali National Park and the second was Kenai Fjords National Park. So those were my two stops (with the whole flying in and out of Anchorage thing).

If Denali and Seward our on your list, then read on to see the highlights of our 7 day Alaska itinerary .

denali tundra wilderness tour review

What About An Alaskan Cruise?

So one of the most popular ways to see Alaska is via an Alaskan Cruise. And, well, our Alaskan honeymoon was actually 2 weeks long with the first week being a cruise through Southeast Alaska .

But this was not your typical cruise. The big, mega-ships do not appeal to me. So instead I looked for a small ship operator. And that’s when I discovered Uncruise Adventures.

alaska cruise

Our one week cruise with Uncruise focused on the natural beauty and wildlife of Alaska . There were no dockings in towns (other than our embarkation in Juneau). Instead we kayaked in beautiful coves, took skiff tours to glaciers, bushwhacked to remote places, and even got to spend a whole day exploring Glacier Bay National Park.

Our cruise with Uncruise was a highlight of our trip , and I’ve written a whole review of it – including who I think this kind of cruise is for (and who it’s not for). Check it out if an Alaskan cruise is on your list!

When To Visit Alaska

The best time of year to visit Alaska would be during the summer. Peak summer season is from June to August. And, well, this is because the weather is the best during those months (think drier and warmer).

But don’t expect hot temperatures. The highs during the day range from like 60°F-80°F and the lows at night drop to like 40°F-50°F. And if you come in the shoulder season (May & September), expect even cooler temperatures.

In terms of rain, it gets rainier as the summer months go on. So driest in May and rainiest in September where there’s like a 50% chance of rain everyday.

Now there are exceptions to this weather. (Remember my number one comment about Alaska – it is BIG.) So each destination is a bit different. But these are good, general rules to go by.

Day 1: Anchorage

Flying into Alaska probably means you are coming into Anchorage. (Exception being a Southeast Alaska trip where you’ll fly into Juneau.)

Now you can rent a car for the whole trip, and this does have it’s advantages (the number one being freedom from schedules). But renting a car was EXPENSIVE when we looked at it. We wanted to take the train (as an experience in of itself), and looked to rent a car for the second half of the trip. And it was over $1,000 for just like 3/4 days. Plus you have gas and then parking to deal with.

If you can find a good deal on a car rental, I’d definitely consider it. But we didn’t. And you definitely don’t have to.

We landed in Anchorage in afternoon, so we just had one night in the city before catching the train in the morning.

Dinner at 49th State Brewery

49th State Brewery was recommended a ton everywhere I looked. And the food and the beer looked good. What I didn’t quite grasp was just how popular this place is.

After getting checked in and cleaned up, we walked over at about 7pm and there was like a 3+ hour wait for a table. Now because it was summer, there was plenty of light outside (and still would be at 10pm), but like we wouldn’t be eating until 10:30pm.

But we put our names down and then kept an eye out for a table to open up in the bar area (basically the first floor), and really lucked out when someone got up just as we walked by and were able to snag a table.

alaska tour 7 days

The food was really good, and Ryan liked the beer . The one I really wanted to try was out unfortunately, but my second choice was good.

If you can get in, I’d definitely recommend this place. But just expect a long wait – perhaps especially on the weekends (it was Saturday night for us).

Anchorage Accommodation

We really wanted to stay at the Hotel Captain Cook , but unfortunately didn’t book It in time. If we came back, that is where I would like to stay. Instead we stayed at the Ramada , which was ok. They did have an airport pickup, which I appreciated.

More Anchorage Accommodation Options:

 • Four Points by Sheraton Anchorage Downtown
 • Historic Anchorage Hotel

Day 2: Train to Denali

Alaskan railroad.

The Alaskan Railroad is often touted as one of the things to do in Alaska. Especially the journey up to the Denali area. One because the views are magnificent, but also because of the good chances to actually see the mountain (aka Denali herself) from the train.

The train journey to Denali National Park leaves in the morning. And these trips book up fast. So once you know you want to do it, I’d book those tickets. You can also look to book the Wilderness Explorer , which is a separate company, but is attached to the Alaskan Railroad train and makes the same journey.

alaska railroad

Now if you can afford it, the way to go is the Gold Star Service. They do feed you – and the food is ok – but the glass domed railcars were epic . And we lucked out and had the first seats on the train, so we had glass above us, to the side of us, and right in front of us.

The only bummer about the trip was that the morning was a bit rainy, so the journey north was a bit cloudy. So we did not see Denali during the train ride. But even with that, the views were incredible.

Lastly, we made our reservations through Alaska Tour & Travel , a travel agency, since they were able to find us seats for the days we wanted even though they looked sold out. Definitely recommend.

alaska railroad

Arrival in Denali

Now Denali National Park is quite large. And there are several towns you can stay in. (All are along the Parks Highway that forms the eastern border of the park.)

We stayed in the community right by the main entrance to the park.

When the train arrives at the depot, there will be hotel representatives around to take you to your accommodation. We struggled with ours (more on this below), but eventually we were able to get on a bus.

Dinner at Moose AKa’s

Moose AKa’s was one of the places we were looking forward to the most. Serbian food in a small Alaskan town? And with amazing reviews? Hell yes.

And, guys, it did not disappoint. The service was impeccable. The food was incredible. We loved trying the Serbian beer as well. I want to go back and eat there a second time.

A second time? Yep. It was so good we ate there both nights. It was that good I wasn’t even interested in trying anywhere else.

alaska tour 7 days

Denali Accommodation

Now we wanted to stay at Denali Bluffs or even the Grand Denali . But again we booked late. (And by late I mean like within 4/5 months. Book like over 6 months out you guys.)

So there was only one hotel left when we went to book and that was the McKinley Chalet . Now it seemed nice, but what we didn’t realize is that the resort basically caters to a cruise line that has the ”Denali Experience” as an add-on package.

Basically everyone staying there was doing this. And their whole trip was planned and organized by the cruise line. Our independent booking confused them to no end.

There was no one there to pick us up at the train depot, but eventually we got a ride (after like an hour of asking for help and even calling the hotel).

They pushed back on coming to pick up our bags at the end of our stay because we weren’t on their list. Even though we were checking out and had asked the front desk for the bag pick up the day before. It was a headache the whole trip.

More Denali Accommodation Options:

 • Denali Bluffs
 • Grand Denali
 • McKinley Creekside Cabins
 • Aurora Denali Lodge

Day 3: Denali National Park

This was our full day in the area and we had debated for a bit on how to spend it. The tours into the park seemed like the best way to see the park in one day. I actually wish we would have had two full days in the area, but we decided to spend more time in Seward.

Definitely consider adding on an additional day in the Denali area to go hiking in the park, white water rafting, or even flightseeing. (This last one was a big one we ended up removing for scheduling reasons.)

Tundra Wilderness Tour

So the main way to access Denali National Park is via the Denali Park Road. And since private vehicles can only drive the first 15 miles, buses are your main way into the park. The main ones being the tour buses and transit buses .

After a lot of research, we decided for the Tundra Wilderness Tour.

mt denali in denali national park

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR 2022 & 2023. Due to a landslide along the Park Road, the Denali Tundra Wilderness Tour turns around at MM 43. In fact all buses (tour or transit) turn around at MM 43. This is roughly just halfway along the road and significantly shortens the tour. There is a chance the road will not be fixed for the 2023 season. ALWAYS check the current conditions via the National Park Service.

Under normal conditions, the Denali Tundra Wilderness Tour is one of three tour buses operated by the park . Longer than the short Natural History Tour, but several hours shorter than the 12 hour Kantishna Experience which takes guests all the way out to the end of the road.

The Kantishna Experience is not currently offered due to the road being out. Which was unfortunate as that was the one I wanted to do.

The Tundra Wilderness tour claims to offer great scenery and, hopefully, chances to see wildlife and Denali . (Note that the mountain is only visible about 30% of the time, so there’s a good chance the weather won’t cooperate during your time in the park.)

moose in denali national park

And while there were several things I didn’t like about our tour, in the end we were able to actually see Denali and some wildlife. (Though no bears, wolves, or sheep – just moose and caribou.)

Definitely read my review and see if this is something you’d like to do.

After the tour, we spent time doing a bit of souvenir shopping, walking out to the main Denali National Park sign , and again eating at Moose-AKa’s. If you have a car, you could drive up to Healy and eat at 49th State Brewery (their second location).

If my afternoon doesn’t thrill you, you do have options. You could spend your time flightseeing, taking a shuttle to the visitor center and doing a few hikes around there, or even white water rafting. Since it doesn’t get dark until basically past midnight in the summer, you have a lot of daylight.

denali national park

Day 4: Travel to Seward

This was a long day. Driving time from Denali National Park to Seward is 6.5 hours. Since we didn’t have a car, we opted for the Park Connection Bus . The bus picked us up at our hotel in Denali around 7am and we got to the Seward area around 5:45pm.

We did stop in Anchorage for about an hour and a half for lunch. We grabbed a bite to eat at Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse which was right around the corner from the bus stop. And there are a few other bathroom breaks as well.

But we basically spent most of the day on the bus.

Once we arrived in Seward, we called a taxi to pick us up and take us to the hotel. Unfortunately our hotel didn’t offer a pick-up, but it was right in the old downtown so we then could walk to restaurants, shops, and more.

van gilder hotel

Seward Accommodation

We were on a bit of a budget (and, well, booked kinda late), so we stayed at the Van Gilder Hotel . This is an old, historic hotel. Also, apparently, a bit haunted as well. I loved the historic feel of it, but I know some people might be put off by it.

But for the price and location, it was perfect for us.

More Seward Accommodation Options

 • Gateway Hotel
 • Hotel Seward
 • Harborview Inn
 • Spruce Lodge
 • Sea Treasures Inn
 • Steller Inn

Day 5: Seward

The next couple of days are spent in Seward – a town I really came to love. And you don’t really need a car while here. Both of our main activities (dog sledding & boat tour) had free pick-up/drop-off. And then there’s the free Seward shuttle .

Glacier Dog Sledding

Fly in a helicopter. Land on a glacier. Go dog sledding. Yes, this is a thing. And yes, it’s as cool as it sounds.

It was also the second big splurge of our trip, as it is expensive. But this experience was incredible – read my full review for all the details and photos.

dog sledding in seward

You can find information about the tour we did from Turning Heads Kennel and from Seward Helicopter Tours. The Book Now buttons go to the same booking engine because they are the same tour (they partner together).

The booking process was very smooth and I liked their cancellation policy. They also offered free pick-up and drop-off in the Seward area.

First it started with the 15 minute helicopter ride. Everyone gets a window seat (and I was even up front next to the pilot). You’ll swoop across the bay and up towards Godwin Glacier.

seward helicopter tours

I had never flown in a helicopter before the tour and though it was a bit nerve-racking at first…I loved it. This part of the trip seemed to fly by (literally) and before we knew it we had crossed over the lip of the glacier and could see the dog sled camp in the distance.

The only thing I would do differently would be to schedule a second helicopter tour. (Which you can do through Seward Helicopter Tours .) I loved that part of the experience so much.

Then you have about an hour on the glacier itself. Only a few people dog sled at a time, so the first half of our time on the glacier was spent taking photos, talking to the staff, and snuggling so many cute sled dog puppies.

Then it was our time to dog sled. The 25 minute dog sled ride is broken into 3 different parts. This works to give each person on the sled a chance to sit in the front and grab those amazing photos and videos of the dogs running.

turning heads glacier camp

At each stop along the glacier, you’ll have a chance to get off and take some photos. Your guide will also be able to take some photos of you on the sled and with the dogs.

It goes without saying that the actual experience of dog sledding on a glacier was a once in a lifetime experience.

More Seward Activities

Over the next two days we did two additional must-see activities, but you may find that you have some more free time. The dog sled tour took about 2ish hours, and so we had the rest of the day to ourselves. We spent it exploring the downtown area and relaxing a bit.

But there’s so much more to see in Seward! Here are some of the activities I have bookmarked for next time.

Visit Exit Glacier

Exit Glacier is another of the most popular spots in Kenai Fjords National Park and the only part of the park accessible via road. Try the 2.2 mile Exit Glacier Trail to get a sense of the area. Though you may have to walk further than you think due to how fast the glacier is receding.

If you don’t have a car, there are several shuttle operators in town that can you take you to Exit Glacier. (You will need to book these in advance.)

Hike to Harding Icefield

This massive (700 square mile) ice field is responsible for so many of the wonders of Kenai Fjords National Park. Because this is where the glaciers come from. Think Exit glacier, Bear Glacier, and the tidewater glaciers you’ll see during the Kenai Fjords boat cruises. All come from the Harding Icefield.

But if you want to get up close and personal, you can hike out to the icefield from the Exit Glacier area of the park. It’s a very strenuous 8.2 mile roundtrip hike (with over 3000ft of elevation gain), but I’ve seen the photos and they are impressive. You have to be prepared for all the weather and be a strong hiker. Here’s the Harding Icefield Trail on All Trails.

Scenic Helicopter Tour

I loved the helicopter ride during our glacier dog sledding tour so much that a scenic helicopter tour is now on my list of things to do again. Seward Helicopters is the main operator (and the one that works with the dog sledding group).

They offer four scenic flight options : 15min, 30min, 45min, and 60min. So you can pick the best flight option for you (based on what you want to see and your budget). They even have an overnight experience at Bear Glacier that looks incredible.

seward helicopter tours

Climb Mt. Marathon

So there’s a mountain that kind of looms over Seward. This is Mt. Marathon. And every July 4th there’s actually a race to the top of it. (It’s call the Mount Marathon Race , and is about a 5k distance with almost 3,000ft of elevation gain).

We were in Seward in the days leading up to the race, and people were excited about it. In 2022, the winners did it in like 45(ish) minutes.

But when it’s not race day, you can hike the mountain the rest of the year. The trailhead is located on the west side of town, at the intersection of Monroe Street and First Avenue.

Day 6: Seward

Kenai fjords boat cruise.

Without a doubt, the number one thing to do in Seward is to take a Kenai Fjords Boat Cruise. I wasn’t sure what to expect from ours, but it was a highlight of our trip .

Major Marine Tours offers several different cruise options. The varying factor here is time (ranging from 4 all the way up to 8.5 hours). And of course the longer the tour the more you see and the farther out you go.

orca in kenai fjords national park

One of the things we wanted to do was to see a tidewater glacier. So we choose the 7.5 hour cruise due to it being one of the longest they offer (and therefore more wildlife chances) and it visiting two massive and active tidewater glaciers.

Now the glaciers were incredible. But the best part was the wildlife. Sea otters, seals, orcas, humpback whales, sea lions, puffins, and more.

It was easily one of the best days of our whole entire trip. And if we were to go back to Seward, we would take a tour from Major Marine again . That’s how much we loved it. Check out my full review for all the details on the tour and what we saw!

aialik glacier in kenai fjords national park

Seward Brewing Company

The Seward Brewing Company is not open everyday (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays I believe). And unfortunately for us, we were there during those days. We did fit in a very short visit on our last day, but if you can, I’d go for a proper dinner.

The food and beer were fantastic. We sat at the bar and chatted with a few other patrons and with the bartenders when they weren’t super busy. Plus it was less than a block from our hotel.

We probably would have gone for a drink almost every day if we could have.

Day 7: Seward & Return to Anchorage

Alaska sealife center.

This was our last day in Seward and we were catching the evening train back to Anchorage. But first we spent the morning at the Alaska SeaLife Center . This is not only an aquarium, but also the only permanent mammal rehabilitation center in Alaska.

I enjoyed our visit and the chance to learn more about the animals and environment we had been seeing for the past several days.

Return to Anchorage & Fly Home

We caught the evening train (left at 6pm) back to Anchorage. The 4ish hour journey was easy and quite beautiful. We went for the much cheaper tickets in Adventure Class (instead of the Gold Star).

When we arrived at the depot in Anchorage, we called the hotel we were staying at (America’s Best Airport), and then it took well over an hour for them to come and get us. We were the last ones at the depot, and the security guard was worried about leaving before we did (the depot is not in a great part of town).

alaska tour 7 days

We should have just gotten an Uber, but every time we called the hotel, they told us the shuttle was just 10 minutes out. Ugh it was bad.

The first flight of our journey back home left very early the next day (6:15am), so we just needed somewhere to put our heads for 4 hours. But even then, I would not recommend the place we stayed. Ugh it was bad.

Depending on when your flight leaves, you could try to stay in the downtown area. But if it’s super early like ours, staying near the airport is probably your best bet. Just avoid the America’s Best if you can.

What to Pack for a Trip to Alaska

Packing for my trip to Alaska was a bit tough. The days in Denali National Park were warm, but the nights were cool. And then it was cool and a bit rainy in Seward. And if do a Kenai Fjords Cruise (and you should), it’s very very cold if you sit outside on the viewing decks.

Clothing & Shoes

 • Rain jacket . Suggested: REI Co-op Rainier Rain Jacket
 • Rain pants . Suggested: REI Essential Rain Paints (you may or may not need these – but I’d consider them if you are planning long hikes, kayak trips, or even to stay warmer for the Kenai Fjords Cruise)
 • Insulated jacket . Suggested: REI Down Jacket
 • Fleece sweater and/or jacket . Suggestions: Cotopaxi Half-Zip & Cotopaxi Hooded Full Zip Jacket (I actually brought both, a jacket and a sweater.)
 • Base layers . Suggestions: Merino Wool Top & Merino Wool Bottom
 • Long sleeve tops. I brought a couple of warm flannels, wool sweaters, and causal long sleeve shirts.
 • Short sleeve tops . Just a few athletic short sleeve shirts for the warmer days Suggested: REI T-shirt
 • Leggings / hiking pants . I brought a couple of leggings & joggers, two being on the more sturdy side for activities. Suggestions: REI Flash Hybrid Tights & Athleta Trekkie Joggers
 • Casual pants . I think I brought one pair of jeans, and then just wore my leggings.
 • Beanie & ball cap .
 • Scarf or warm neck gaiter.
 • Waterproof / Hiking boots . I brought a pair of hiking boots as my main “activity” boots. Suggestions: Merrell Moab & Danner Mountain 600
 • Casual shoes . In addition to my hiking boots, I only brought a pair of converse as an alternative shoe. But I think a more casual style of boots would have been good too. And if you aren’t planning intense hikes, you maybe could get away with a pair that’s good for short hikes and everyday use (and then ditch the more legit hiking boots). Suggestions: Chelsea Boot , Danner Inquire , Oboz Bozeman , Danner Inquire Mid , Danner Vertigo
 • Wool socks .
 • Underwear + bras .
 • Pajamas. Or whatever you like to sleep in.

Other Items

 • Day backpack .
 • Sunglasses .
 • Binoculars . Definitely bring some. The wildlife is not that close, and it’ll be so much better to have your own that’s adjusted to you. Suggestions: Nocs Provisions , Nikon Trailblazer
 • Camera equipment . If you have a nice camera (not a phone), then you’ll probably want to invest in a big zoom lens if you want to get those up close and personal wildlife shot. My zoom lens (55-200mm on a APS-C sensor) was better than most, but some of the wildlife was still small in my photos. I wish I had invested in one that maybe went up to to 400mm minimum.

The Best 7 Day Alaska Itinerary for a Summer Road Trip

June 4, 2024.

If you want to plan a trip to Alaska, you're in the right place! A road trip in Alaska is an amazing experience to add to your bucket list. This itinerary covers a scenic plane ride around the tallest mountain in North America, hiking on a glacier, seeing Alaskan wildlife and much more. Road tripping around Southcentral Alaska is sure to make you fall in love with the amazing scenery, the rugged attitude and all of the things that make Alaska so special.

If you only have a week, you can see a lot of Alaska with prior planning and a willingness to keep on the move. This Alaska road trip itinerary assumes that you are flying into Anchorage, renting a car and ready to be very active during your trip. This schedule leaves little time for relaxation!

If you have less than 7 days, pick what is most important to you and prioritize that! And if you have more time, there is an endless list of things you could do in this incredible state. I don’t like to say that anyone “has” to spend a certain amount of time somewhere, but I think 7 days is a great amount of time to see some of the best things that southcentral Alaska has to offer, visit two national parks and make other fun stops along the way.

Table of Contents

When to visit alaska, tips for driving in alaska, what to pack for an alaska trip, day one: arrive in anchorage, eat pizza, drive to talkeetna, day two: spend a day in talkeetna, take a scenic plane ride, drive to denali to sleep, day three: explore denali national park, day four: hike matanuska glacier and stay in anchorage, potter marsh, mchugh creek day use area, beluga point, alaska wildlife conservation center, byron glacier, portage glacier, day six: go kayaking in kenai fjords, day seven: hike in seward, final thoughts.

A view of a wash and Exit Glacier in the distance at Kenai Fjords National Park.

The activities in this itinerary are based on a visit to Alaska in the summer. The summer months allow you to visit and hike in Denali National Park, see whales off the coast in Seward and enjoy warm weather. Summer temperatures average in the 50’s °F and 60’s °F, but be prepared with layers in case it is colder.

The spring and fall can also be wonderful times to visit Alaska, as you can still have great weather and there will likely be less crowds. Just be sure to check conditions ahead of time for places like Denali. Average spring and fall temperatures tend to be lows in the 20’s °F and highs in the 30’s °F and 40’s °F, all depending on which month you visit and where you go.

Alaska in the winter is absolutely beautiful but offers a very different experience. In the winter, you can see the northern lights, go dog sledding, ride snowmobiles and do other fun cold weather activities. Winter temperatures will likely be below freezing for the duration of your visit.

The bridge which private vehicles can make it to in Denali National Park.

 • If you are renting a car, be sure to book several months ahead of time because Alaska has been experiencing a rental car shortage for the last couple years.
 • Be prepared for the possibility of traffic delays. Road maintenance occurs in the summer and many of the roads you’ll drive for this itinerary offer no alternative routes. I had no serious delays, but I’ve heard horror stories of 8 hour delays due to construction. Whenever possible, keep your plans flexible and know that this is possible.
 • The speed limits are pretty low in Alaska and I saw many people pulled over by police. Be sure to abide by the speed limit.
 • Services are spread out in Alaska, so it is a good idea to fill up on gas whenever possible. I also recommend downloading offline maps because you may lose cell reception during parts of the drive.
 • There are moose signs everywhere when you’re driving around Alaska! I only saw them in the national parks but keep your eyes peeled while driving. If you’ve never seen a moose, they are huge and you would not want to run into one (or any wildlife for that matter).

The weather can change quickly so it is important to be prepared for both cold and warm weather in the summer.

Here are some things you should be sure to pack for your trip:

 • A lightweight jacket or windbreaker for layering.
 • Hiking shoes or boots.
 • Trekking poles if you would like them for hiking.
 • A camera with a good zoom lens for wildlife photography.
 • Binoculars for the Denali bus tour.
 • Sunglasses and sunscreen, especially for hiking on glaciers.
 • A reusable water bottle .
 • A first aid kit .
 • Gloves, a hat and warm socks.
 • A poncho or umbrella for rain.

7 Day Alaska Itinerary

This Alaska travel itinerary includes Denali National Park, Matanuska Glacier, Kenai Fjords National Park, and more. Keep reading to learn about the best things to do in Alaska during your first visit.

Start your trip by flying into Anchorage and renting a car! Be sure to have your rental car reserved in advance because Alaska has been experiencing rental car shortages in recent years.

The exterior of Moose's Tooth Pub in Anchorage.

If you are looking for a local and delicious takeout meal to enjoy on your way to your next destination, I highly recommend visiting Moose's Tooth Pub & Pizzeria. Moose’s Tooth Pub offers a wide range of creative pizza options and high quality food, served alongside an extensive beer selection.

I recommend trying the Amazing Apricot pizza which includes apricot sauce, cream cheese, carrots, onions and cheese (it comes with chicken too but I ordered it vegetarian). It’s the perfect mix of sweet and savory and a delicious flavor combination! If you are ordering take out, order ahead because waits can be long. If you are eating in, be prepared for long wait times, but there is an outdoor patio space and a bar where you can wait and enjoy the atmosphere.

Two A-Frame buildings that make up the offices of the Talkeetna Inn.

After enjoying your pizza and making your way out of the city, drive two hours north to stay the night in Talkeetna. Talkeetna is a cute town located about halfway in between Anchorage and the entrance to Denali National Park.

It is known for electing Stubbs the cat to be mayor for 20 years. (He unfortunately passed away in 2017) The town is small but a popular destination for visitors. People come each year to go flightseeing, rafting and fishing. I stayed in the Talkeetna Inn and it was a nice place to stay with basic amenities.

Start your day with breakfast and coffee at Conscious Coffee. This cute coffee window has great breakfast sandwiches and coffee, plus it was the shop that opened the earliest while I was there!

Red and white planes parked at K2 Aviation in Talkeetna.

If you are interested and able to spend the money, a flightseeing tour is an incredible thing to do from Talkeetna. This is where planes take off to fly around Mount Denali and the Denali National Park mountain range. I recommend booking a flight with K2 Aviation, they offer multiple options with various lengths and prices. You also have the ability to add a glacier landing to each of the tours.

Unfortunately, the day that I was supposed to do the flightseeing tour, the weather was not clear enough to take off. This is very common, especially in the summer months. Keep in mind that if this is a big priority for you, you should allow extra days in Talkeetna to maximize your chances of the weather being clear.

A view of Nagley's Store, a red building with white trim, in Talkeetna, Alaska.

After the flightseeing tour, it’s worth spending some time to walk around Talkeetna and visit the various shops and restaurants. Some places to eat include Mimi’s Haus of Cheese, West Rib Pub & Grill and Talkeetna Spinach Bread.

After your time in Talkeetna, make your way to stay outside of Denali National Park for the next night (or longer). On your way, be sure to stop at Denali Viewpoint South and Denali View North, two viewpoints in Denali State Park. If the sky is clear, these spots provide excellent views of the Denali Mountain range.

When you arrive at Denali , there are a few hotel options right outside the park in the town of Denali Park. I stayed in the Denali Bluffs Hotel and loved the view of Denali National Park and the nice, clean room. There is also a food truck in the convenience store parking lot next door where we enjoyed a vegetarian burrito and curry.

If you only have one day in Denali National Park , I recommend the transit bus tour so that you can see as much of the park as possible. Personal vehicles are not allowed past the 15 mile marker of the road, so taking a bus tour is one of the only ways to get further into the park.

The transit bus tours have the added benefit of giving you the ability to get off at any time for hiking. Without getting off and hiking, the bus tour typically takes about 8 hours round trip with some stops along the way. Options vary depending on the season so be sure to check the national park website for details. The bus is an incredible way to see wildlife such as moose, grizzly bears and elk.

A view of greenery, mountains and a river inside of Denali National Park.

There is also an option to take a narrated bus tour, where you will learn a bit more about the history and wildlife in the park. This version is not set up to get off any time like the transit bus. I talk in more detail about what to expect on the buses in my guide to the Denali transit bus .

Be sure to reserve your tickets to the bus tours a few months in advance as they do sell out.

If you have another day in Denali , I recommend visiting the Sled Dog Kennels and hiking within the first 15 miles of the park. Denali is the only national park with sled dog kennels and during the summer, you can see them up close and possibly pet them or see a demonstration. It’s a great way to learn about these incredible animals.

3 moose in Denali with trees in the mountains in the distance.

There are also several hiking trails that do not require taking one of the park buses. Options include the 2 mile Horseshoe Lake Trail , the 7 mile Mount Healy Overlook Trail and the 9 mile Trip Lakes trail . Denali is unique in that they also allow visitors to explore the terrain off of marked trails. This is a great option if you are adventurous and have hiking experience, just be sure you’re properly prepared and discuss your route with a ranger.

After a full day or more exploring Denali, stay outside of the park again and get ready for an early start the next morning to make the drive down to Matanuska Glacier.

Matanuska Glacier is located a four and a half hour drive from Denali Park. I recommend doing the drive in the morning and booking a tour of Matanuska for the afternoon.

While it used to be available for self guided exploring, it is now only accessible via a guided tour. There are a few different companies that offer tours but I went with Glacier Tours. They tend to offer the most tour options, making the timing more flexible.

A view looking down at Matanuska Glacier. There is a pool of water surrounded by ice.

Matanuska is the largest glacier in the US that can be reached by vehicle and is absolutely incredible to hike on. You are provided micro spikes and a helmet to wear on the tour, making the hike on the ice quite doable for most abilities. Hiking on a glacier and seeing the incredible ice formations, drinking the glacier water and taking in the views is an amazing experience to add to your bucket list.

After hiking the glacier, I recommend driving to Anchorage for the night to stay before driving down the Kenai Peninsula the next morning.

Day Five: Drive to Seward With Stops Along the Way

The drive from Anchorage to Seward is absolutely beautiful and will take you along the coast with views of the water on one side and mountains on the other. Without stopping, it will take you about 2 and a half hours without traffic. However, there are several stops worth making along the way.

An area of greenery and water with mountains in the distance.

Located not far from Anchorage, the Potter Marsh is a nice place to walk along some boardwalk trails and spot local wildlife. (It’s a great place for bird watching!)

A small waterfall flowing into a pond at McHugh Creek.

This park is a beautiful stop to have a picnic, go on a hike or take a quick scenic walk. There is a waterfall right by the parking lot and several viewpoints.

Train tracks and a giant rock on the water along the Seward Highway.

Beluga Point is a popular spot to see whales not far from McHugh Creek Day Use Area. I did not see any whales but there are nice views of the water here. Despite the no trespassing signs, many people cross over the train tracks and climb around the rocks right on the water’s edge here. Use your own judgment and be cautious around the tracks and when on rocks. Binoculars are great for spotting whales in the water and mountain goats on the mountains.

A river with people fishing along the water and a mountain in the distance.

Bird Creek is a popular place for fishing. If you aren’t fishing, it’s a quick stop where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Bird Creek River with mountains in the background.

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center takes special care of injured and orphaned animals and has a commitment to conservation, education and research. There are over 200 acres of habitats for the animals, which include moose, bison, caribou, elk, bears, fox and more. You can visit the sanctuary through a self guided or guided tour and learn about the various animals that live there.

Gray rocks with a small glacier in the distance.

Byron Glacier is a 3 mile hike that is rated easy and leads you right up to the glacier. The hike begins in the forest and is mostly flat until reaching the glacier. From there, you can touch the glacier and see the river flowing underneath it.

After reaching it, you have the option to climb up further over some boulders and get a view of the impressive glaciers on the mountainside. Depending on the time of year you visit, there may be ice caves present. Always use caution and be very careful on the ice or in caves, they are not necessarily stable.

Portage Glacier is an impressive ten story tall glacier that is only accessible by boat. There are Portage Lake cruises in the summer where you can see the glacier from the water and enjoy the surrounding scenery.

A view of the Whittier Bay through a metal fence.

Whittier is a small town that was used as a military base during WWII. Before the 1940’s, the area was only reachable by sea, but a tunnel was built so that the Alaska Railroad would reach the water and so that a port could be established. Today, the port is still used year-round as an important ice-free port for Anchorage.

To reach Whittier, you will drive through the longest combined vehicle-railroad tunnel in North America, which only allows for one way traffic. The schedule is typically 15 minutes of vehicle traffic going one way, 15 minutes for trains to go through and 15 minutes for traffic going the other way.

Check the schedule ahead of time and plan accordingly to minimize your wait time! When you make it through the tunnel to Whittier, there are restaurants along the bay, tour options for activities like kayaking and jet skis and beautiful views. During my short time there, I had lunch at the Swiftwater Cafe, had coffee from Otter Ice Cream & Coffee, checked out the various shops and drove by the abandoned Buckner building.

Lydia standing in front of Tern Lake, which has a beautiful mountain reflection on the water.

Tern Lake is a quick stop where you can see a beautiful reflection of the mountains on a small lake framed with greenery. You will find it just off the road right after exiting Route One to drive to take State Highway One to Seward. It’s a beautiful place for photography.

Finally, arrive in Seward to spend the next couple nights. There are several great restaurants in Seward. I recommend Seward Brewery for something more casual and The Cookery for a nicer meal (be sure to make a reservation in advance).

There are multiple hotel options in Seward to suit your needs. I stayed at Hotel Seward and thought that it was a great value. It is centrally located, has a range of room options for different budgets and is filled with kitschy decor.

Start your first full day in Seward with a visit to Resurrection Bay Coffee Shop. This coffee house is located inside of a former church and has art and gifts for sale in addition to pastries and coffee.

A view of the Cove of the Spires, jagged rock formations sticking out of the water, in Kenai Fjords National Park.

When you’re ready for the day, I highly recommend getting out on the water to see Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park. There are a few different ways to do this depending on your appetite for adventure. You can take a day cruise where you’ll see wildlife and enjoy the views, or you can go on a kayaking tour and get up close and personal with the natural beauty.

I recommend taking a full day kayaking tour with Kayak Adventures Worldwide out to Aialik Glacier, where you will get to kayak next to the glacier with an experienced guide. During the ride out to the glacier, you will have the opportunity to see puffins in the Cove of the Spires, whales in the bay and views of additional glaciers. No matter which way you choose, exploring Kenai Fjords by water is a memorable experience that you won’t soon forget.

On your second night in Seward, enjoy another one of the delicious restaurants that Seward has to offer.

If you have another day in Seward , check out the beautiful hiking trails in the land portion of Kenai Fjords National Park. The most popular trail is the Exit Glacier trail , a 2.2 mile hike that will lead you to a view of the beautiful but shrinking Exit Glacier. The glacier has been shrinking at an alarming pace in recent years and you can see yearly markers of where the ice used to end. It’s a powerful place where you can see the impact of climate change right before your eyes.

A view of Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords.

If you have time and are an experienced hiker, you can also hike to the Harding Icefield beginning from the same trailhead as Exit Glacier. The trail is 9.2 miles with over 3,000 feet of elevation gain and will lead you to a view overlooking the iceland that feeds into over 30 glaciers in the surrounding area.

If this is your last day in Alaska, make your way back to the Anchorage airport. If you’re looking for one last delicious stop in Anchorage, get ice cream from Wild Scoops. They are a small batch ice cream shop with some delicious and experimental flavors. There are two locations and both are less than 20 minutes from the airport. I really enjoyed the black cup coffee oreo ice cream!

An Alaska road trip is an incredible experience that is well worth the time and expense. I hope this guide helps you plan your dream trip to Alaska!

Alaska Itinerary 7 Days Summer

Alaska Summer Road Trip Itinerary

For this 1 week Alaska itinerary, you’ll start your journey in Anchorage .

The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is the international airport in the city . You will mostly be arriving there.

Head to arrivals and get your checked bags from the baggage claim area. Then head downstairs to pick up your rental car , as you will need it for this itinerary.

If you’re feeling a bit tired from the journey, don’t forget to fuel yourself with an espresso. Check out the Alaska House of Coffee on West Northern Lights Boulevard before the drive!

Trust me on this one, I’ve tested dozens of coffee shops in Anchorage and this one is the best.

stunning port of seward with cute little boats in line and glacier in the background first stop on alaska 7 days itinerary.

Once you have a snack and beverage in hand, you’ll hop on AK-1 South towards Seward. It is a picturesque coastal town that also happens to be where my friend Emily got married.

This scenic drive will reward you with exceptional views along the famous Seward Highway . You’ll pass by Beluga Point , which is popular for spotting beluga whales.

Other highlights are Turnagain Arm and the beautiful Chugach National Forest.

Along the way, I recommend stopping in Girdwood for an extra pick-me-up from Alpine Bakery. It is my personal favorite on the peninsula, especially their 1-pound fudge brownies.

famous seward highway that will be on every alaska itinerary for a week

Stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

Continue for 11 more miles south to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.

It is the perfect halfway stopping point to break up the 2.5-hour drive to Seward. But it’s also one of the best places in the s tate to see wildlife.

You can see everything from reindeer and moose to grizzly bears, bald eagles, and even foxes and wolves.

All of the animals have been rescued from the Alaskan wilderness and have either been rehabilitated or will be released when it’s safe to do so. Some are given a forever home within the conservation center if release would cause further harm.

It’s a great way to practically guarantee sightings of North America’s majestic animals while simultaneously contributing to a wonderful cause. Following your visit, continue 90 more minutes to the town of Seward.

Arrival in Seward

Angel’s Rest on Resurrection Bay

 • Private Beach
 • Amazing View

After arrival, take some time to check into your accommodation. The Seward Windsong Lodge offers modern, yet rustic rooms.

Alternatively, the Angels Rest on Resurrection Bay a bit further down in Lowell Point offers a true escape from the city. They have some of the best views of the Kenai Mountains.

Once you’ve checked in, head into town and grab a bite to eat at Ray’s Waterfront Restaurant. The oysters are fresh, the seafood Alfredo is to die for, and the drinks are always on par.

Finish off your evening with a walk along the docks of the small boat harbor that is right in front of the restaurant.

Be patient, sit quietly, and listen. It’s very common to see sea otters floating on their backs, eating mussels from the ocean floor.

stunning shot of the kenai fjords glacier

Start your day with a quick visit to The Porthole food truck (typically located near the J-Dock). Grab some delicious breakfast burritos.

Make sure to fuel yourself before heading down the street for one of the best things to do in Seward – taking a Kenai Fjords Tour !

The tour will take you on a journey through Resurrection Bay en route to the Aialik Glacier . You will go past enormous glaciers and to some of the best whale-watching spots in Alaska .

It’s also an incredible opportunity to see puffins, sea lions, bald eagles, and other Alaskan wildlife . Be sure to bring your camera and some extra layers!

Once you return from your adventure-packed day out at sea, you can enjoy a visit to the Alaska SeaLife Center. There you’ll learn about local wildlife from an expert.

End your day with dinner at The Cookery with freshly caught Alaskan salmon accompanied by the perfect glass of wine.

Hiking at the Kenai Fjords National Park

insane picture of the exit glacier in the kenai fjords national park

Today, you’ll be starting your journey to Homer. First, you’ll have the chance to do a morning hike in the Kenai Fjords National Park.

Pack up the car and head to the Kenai Fjords National Park Visitor Center. There you can pick up a park map and consider your options for a hike.

If you enjoy difficult but rewarding hikes, then the 8.2-mile round-trip hike to the Harding Icefield and Exit Glacier will be your number one choice.

It will be a full-day hike, so if you aren’t up for a long drive following, then maybe consider adding an extra day in Seward.

The 2.3-mile Exit Glacier Loop (1-2 hours) is perfect for families or anyone seeking a short, but beautiful tour in the national park.

It has paved trails, making it easy for those with limited mobility. It also provides an epic view of the Exit Glacier. Optimal for photo opportunities.

Regardless of which hike you choose to do, be sure to bring bear spray . Make plenty of noise while in the park.

Wildlife sightings are common , so you’ll want to talk to a ranger before heading out. This way you can ensure both your and the animal’s safety.

Driving to Homer

kenai peninsula stay

Kenai Peninsula Suites

 • 4 **** Hotel
 • Eco-Friendly Lodge
 • Private Deck
 • Guest Parking

Following your visit to the park, jump in the car and start the scenic 3-hour drive along the Sterling Highway to Homer. It is a long trip, but I promise the views will be worth it!

Upon arrival, check into the Kenai Peninsula Suites . There you’ll find beautiful log cabins overlooking Kachemak Bay. That is easily the most beautiful place to stay on this 7-day Alaska itinerary.

Once you get settled in, head down to the Homer Spit. You’ll find endless seafood restaurants to choose from.

I’d head to Swell Taco where you can order your food and sit out on the deck overlooking the ocean. They have some of the best food in town, plus the stop will be quick. After, you’ll have some time for souvenir shopping i f you’re up for it.

beautiful port of homer with stunning mountains in the background

Today is the day of this one-week in Alaska itinerary for adventure!

Homer is widely known as the halibut fishing capital of the world. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced angler, this is the place to do some fishing.

Half and full-day tours depart right from Homer Harbor . Book well in advance, since boats fill up months ahead of time.

If a full day out on the ocean doesn’t appeal to you, then you’re in luck!

Homer casually sits on the border of two of Alaska’s best bear-viewing regions : Lake Clark National Park and Katmai National Park. With dozens of tour operators offering half and full-day tours to these parks, Homer is one of the best departure points on the Kenai Peninsula for bear tours.

Of course, if you’d prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground (without the presence of potentially dangerous wild animals around) you can also do some shopping in town.

The Alaska Starfish Co. is wonderful for souvenirs. Head to the Homer Brewing Company if the weather proves to be less than tolerable.

End your night with a dip in the hot tub back at the Kenai Peninsula Suites before changing into something comfortable for some good conversation with friends around the outdoor firepit (s’mores are practically required).

stunning view of homer city on the lake with beautiful mountains in the background

If you would love to do both the fishing tour and the bear-viewing tour, then this is your extra day in Homer to do just that!

You also have the option of going kayaking in Kachemak Bay .

Another great idea is taking a seaplane tour up into the mountains (seriously, you won’t regret it).

Lastly, you might wanna do the Rainbow Tour over to the city of Seldovia on the other side of the bay.

If it’s the relaxation you’re after, then spend the morning scouring the beach at Land’s End Resort for sea glass and wildlife. Have some lunch and do some exploring on the Homer Spit for the afternoon.

You can’t leave Homer without stopping in the Salty Dawg Saloon for a drink. Make sure to add a dollar bill to the wall of seemingly endless currency collected over the years.

End your evening with a cookout back at your accommodation overlooking Kachemak Bay.

Day 6: Driving from Homer to Anchorage

iconic prince william sound in alaska great stop on a road trip

For your last full day in Alaska, it’s time to start heading back towards Anchorage.

The drive is around 4-hours long, so you should be able to make it back before dark. You may even stop for pictures along the way.

You can stop in Whittier , a city that is only accessed via a very long underground tunnel, en route to seeing the iconic Prince William Sound.

It’s absolutely beautiful and definitely worth a visit. Just keep in mind that the tunnel is one-way. So you’ll need to wait for the tunnel to reopen for your direction which can take up to an hour on occasion.

Exploring Anchorage

Lakefront Anchorage

 • Amazing Lakeview
 • Airport Shuttle
 • Bar & Restaurant
 • Beautiful Rooms

Once you are back in Anchorage, head to the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

There you can learn about Alaskan culture. You get a chance to watch traditional dance performances and explore interactive exhibits, so there is something fun for people of all ages!

End your night by stopping at Fletcher’s on West 5th Avenue inside the Captain Cook Hotel for dinner.

I highly recommend the beef stroganoff and the oysters Rockefeller . As a dessert, have the chocolate peanut butter pie. Honestly, it’s the best way to end your 7-day Alaska itinerary.

If you want to keep things easy, book a room inside the Captain Cook Hotel . All you have to do is take the elevator upstairs after dinner.

However, the Lakefront Anchorage is my personal favorite hotel in Anchorage since it overlooks Lake Spenard. It also offers epic views of the float-planes taking off and landing!

little city of anchorage in alaska in front of beautiful mountain range covered in snow

On the last day of your week in Alaska, it’s time to say goodbye.

If you’re an early bird, then spend some time strolling through town in search of some last-minute Alaskan souvenirs . Once in a Blue Moose is a great spot for this.

Be sure to pick up one last beverage at the Alaska House of Coffee before heading to the airport.

If you find yourself with a little more time, head on over to Kincaid Park . Moose sightings there are common. There are plenty of trails that provide amazing views of Denali National Park and Mount Denali on a clear day.

Be sure to leave a little extra time to return your rental car and just like that, your Alaska 7-day itinerary from Anchorage has come to an end!

Alaska Itinerary 7-Days in Winter

Alaska 7 day itinerary in winter

For those who want to do the 7-day Alaska road trip in winter, I have created a separate itinerary.

Alaska gets very cold in winter , so it will be important to pack plenty of layers if you’ll be visiting between September and April.

This itinerary jumps around a bit more to make the most of Alaska in the winter months. Keep that in mind before choosing a winter itinerary. If rest and relaxation is more your style, be sure to go in summer.

This version of the Alaska itinerary starts in Fairbanks and ends in Anchorage. Keep that in mind when booking your flights. There is a bit more driving involved, but it does cover the best spots to see in Alaska in winter.

Pike’s Waterfront Lodge

 • Free Airport Shuttle
 • Free Parking
 • Spot to See Aurora

Thanks to the numerous reality TV shows, we all think visiting Alaska in the winter is simply impossible. But I’m here to set the record straight.

Visiting Alaska in the winter isn’t only possible, but actually very simple and beautiful .

Local pilots are experts in flying in less-than-perfect weather . Flights are rarely canceled, so you can expect to arrive in Alaska with minimal delays at best.

For your first day in Fairbanks, pick up a rental car at the airport and check into Pike’s Waterfront Lodge . It offers some rustic lodging and fantastic food in its onsite restaurant.

From there, you can settle in for the night, depending on how you’re feeling after the long journey.

If you are up for it, you can head to the Museum of the North. There you’ll learn all about the natural history of Alaska.

Santa Clause Village & North Pole

cute little santa clause village in alaska with decorated tree

Today is a perfect day to explore what this wonderful region has to offer in the winter months.

Start by visiting the Santa Clause Village in the nearby North Pole (one of the best Alaska day trip ideas).

The whole town is decorated with festive lights and cute decor. You can also take pictures with Santa Clause himself in December, shop in the boutiques, or even have a snowball fight. That is if the cold hasn’t made your fingers numb yet.

Chena Hot Springs

the authors friend and her husband in the chena hot springs in alaska

From there, it’s time to explore some of Fairbanks’ natural beauty.

Check out the Chena Hot Springs. There you can soak your muscles after a long travel day.

These thermal baths are nice and hot, not lukewarm like others that I’ve visited. They also provide excellent views of snow-capped mountains. Plus, it’s really fun to jump in the snow after your dip!

Northern Lights Tour

the authors friend and her husband in front of the northern lights in alaska on a winter road trip

Once you get back to Fairbanks, it’s time to do the best thing there is to do in Alaska in the winter: a northern lights tour !

Whether you rent a car or not, please do yourself a favor and go with a trusted tour company instead of venturing out on your own.

It’s very easy to research the best spots for viewing the northern lights near Fairbanks. Murphy Dome Road and Cleary Summit are the most popular.

But you may not realize just how dangerous this activity is – without proper guidance.

Temperatures in Fairbanks during optimal aurora viewing hours average in the negative 20’s Fahrenheit.

You need a car that has an engine block heater, battery heater, and oil heater, as well as numerous safety resources. You need a tow rope and shovel in case you go off the road, food and water, a satellite phone, etc. Otherwise, this fun activity can go south extremely fast.

Trusted tour companies will be equipped with everything you’ll need for a safe and enjoyable experience . Plus, they’re experienced in driving on snow and ice-covered roads, so they’re less likely to end up going off-road.

To check if it’s a good night for a northern lights tour, you’ll want to check the Explore Fairbanks website. They report on the aurora activity.

Don’t worry, this one is very easy to read and can give you a simple explanation such as “good”, “great”, or “excellent”.

Regardless of what this site says, if it’s cloudy, then you’re unlikely to see anything. So, check the website and the weather snow and rain are a definite no-go . If both check out, book a tour!

Did you know that you can also see the Northern Lights in North Dakota?

On day 3 of your week in Alaska in Fairbanks, you’ll have a few different options for activities.

You can either book a tour with a reputable company for ice-fishing or snowmobiling.

Of course, you can also have a leisurely day exploring the town in search of unique souvenirs. The museum is also a great idea if you don’t end up doing it on your first day.

If you choose to go ice fishing, there are plenty of great companies to choose from. I really like AK River Tours since they also provide the opportunity to go at night. Then you have a better chance of seeing the northern lights.

As for snowmobiling, they do that too! There are plenty of great tour companies though and they do book up fast . So don’t fret if the tour you’re looking for is full for your dates.

stunning glacier at girdwood in alaska

Hopefully, you had a chance to see the northern lights and do some fun winter activities up in Fairbanks.

Now it’s time to head down to the Kenai Peninsula for some epic snow sports!

You have two options for going from Fairbanks to Anchorage: the first is the stunning Alaska Railroad (highly recommended if you can squeeze an extra day or two into your trip). But you can also take a short flight down to Anchorage.

Once you arrive in Anchorage, you’ll continue your journey down to Girdwood.

Stay at the iconic Alyeska Resort where you’ll find some of the best ski mountains in Alaska!

Sprinkled with glaciers in every direction, the Alyeska isn’t just one of the most luxurious places to stay in Alaska. It is also one of the best ski resorts in the 49th state.

Spend this day checking in and getting settled before taking the cable car up to the 7 Glaciers Restaurant . Enjoy for an award-winning meal with unbeatable views.

Pro Tip: Make a reservation for dinner as soon as you book your room! Advanced reservations provide guests with a free cable car ride!

End your evening with a dip in the saltwater pool and hot tub , both with stunning views of the Alyeska Mountains.

It’s time to get out of those skis because you’re about to experience some of the best skiing and snowboarding in Alaska!

The Alyeska Resort offers something for everyone: from intermediate slopes to steep, black diamond cliffs.

You can book three- and four-hour tour packages if you want an introduction to the mountain before taking matters into your own hands.

Or you can even hire a private guide if you don’t feel comfortable navigating the trails without help.

Once you’ve had your fill of skiing and snowboarding, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy at the resort. The spa offers a range of treatments from massages to facials .

You can find several shops in the area, where you can pick up souvenirs for yourself or your friends back home. The Alpine Bakery is the best spot around for a sweet treat after your day on the mountain.

If a cozy campfire is something for you, head to the Girdwood Brewing Company . They have an outdoor fire for while you are enjoying some local brews. It will be cold, so be sure to dress in all your warmest gear!

End your night with dinner at one of the resort’s many restaurants and another dip in the heated pool to warm up.

beautiful snowy mountains in girdwood in alaska last stop on the alaska 7 day itinerary in winter

On day 6 of the 7-day Alaska itinerary, you’ll make the 2-hour drive down to Seward for some of the best scenery in Alaska.

Whether you choose to take the train or rent a car, this is one spot that you don’t want to skip!

When you arrive in Seward, head straight to Resurrection Bay. Here, you’ll have a good chance of spotting marine animals, including whales. Even in winter, you can see sea otters, seals, as well as bald eagles, puffins, and more!

Take a walk down the docks on the small boat harbor and be sure to take plenty of pictures of the surrounding glaciers.

If you’re up for a real adventure, you can even take a helicopter tour where you’ll get to land on one of the nearby glaciers!

If you love winter hiking, the Kenai Fjords National Park is open year-round and provides some excellent hiking trails for nature enthusiasts. Just be sure to dress very warm as snow, ice, and sub-freezing temperatures are probable.

Round off your day with dinner at Chinooks for some of the bes t clam chowder and oysters . Plus, there’s plenty of good company!

beautiful lake with snowy mountains in the background end of the alaska 7 day itinerary

On your final day, you’ll have the opportunity to explore downtown Seward. You can get in some last-minute shopping before heading back up to Anchorage.

It’s a beautiful drive along the Seward Highway , so be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife along the way!

Once you’re back in Anchorage, you can either stay overnight or catch a flight out.

If you do stay overnight, round off your 7-day Alaska itinerary with some live music at one of the many local bars . 49th State Brewing Co. is another personal favorite.

Be sure to leave some extra time if you need to return a rental car.

7 days can certainly give you a taste of what Alaska has to offer. This itinerary covers most basic parts you’ll want to see in Alaska on a 7-day itinerary.

Keep in mind that Alaska is an enormous state with many national parks, wildlife, and adventures. You could easily fill weeks or even months of exploration.

In a week, you can explore some key highlights, such as Anchorage, Fairbanks, Seward, Girdwood, or Homer.

It is enough time to try exciting activities such as skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and aurora hunting.

However, a longer stay would allow you to venture further into less-traveled regions. You will also have a better chance of spotting the northern lights (winter activity).

So to answer the question – yes, 7 days is enough for a memorable trip. But if you have more time, there’s always more to discover in this beautiful state.

In my opinion, 10 days is the optimal amount of time to spend in Alaska.

But it also depends on what you want to experience. For a quick trip filled with key highlights and main tourist areas, 7 to 10 days is enough.

If you wish to dive deeper into this vast state, you may wish to consider a 2 to 3-week itinerary.

Remember, Alaska is a state that offers different experiences in different seasons.

So, choosing when to visit may also influence how long you’ll want to stay . Ultimately, the duration of your stay should align with your interests, budget, and travel style.

The cost of a 1-week vacation in Alaska depends on your travel preferences. Overall, Alaska is an expensive destination.

If you’re traveling on a budget, you can expect to spend around $1,000 – $1,200 per person for a week. That includes budget accommodation, meals, transportation, and some cheap or free activities.

For a mid-range budget, you might spend between $2,000 – $3,000 per person. This includes comfortable accommodation, dining at restaurants, car rental, and a couple of guided tours or activities.

If you’re looking for a luxury experience, you could spend $4,000 and upwards per person. This would include staying at high-end hotels or lodges, dining at the best restaurants, private tours, and premium experiences like helicopter tours or high-end fishing charters.

Of course, if you’ll be sharing a room with someone, this doesn’t automatically double the budget per person since the cost of the accommodation won’t change.

These estimates also don’t include airfare to Alaska . That will be depending on where you’re flying from and when you book your tickets.

Keep in mind that costs can also vary depending on the season. Summer is the peak tourist season, so it will be the most expensive.

The best months to see Alaska are July in the summer and December in the winter.

The summer months of June, July, and August are the warmest and have the longest days. That is a popular time for tourists since these months are ideal for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

If you’re hoping to see the northern lights, however, the darker winter months from late September to early April are your best bet.

For winter sports enthusiasts, February and March typically offer the best snow conditions. December is fantastic for holiday markets, skiing, and northern lights spotting!

So in essence, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question.

The cheapest months to go to Alaska are typically during the shoulder seasons, in May and September.

Then you can often find lower prices for flights, accommodations, and tours.

Keep in mind that while some services and attractions may still be available, others may be closed or operate on reduced schedules.

The weather can still be pleasant during these months. But it is pretty unpredictable, so it’s important to keep a flexible schedule with the anticipation of tours getting canceled due to poor weather.

Since snow is common in Alaska during these months as well , road conditions may be bad. Of course, you can also do this itinerary via the Alaska Railroad, if you aren’t familiar with driving in winter conditions.

For the most part, you will need a rental car during your 7-day Alaska itinerary.

Public transportation in Alaska is limited, so having your own rental car is ideal . It allows you to explore the state on you r own schedule and visit some of its more remote destinations.

It also gives you the freedom to go at your own pace and stop along the way for photo opportunities.

Plus, with so much breathtaking scenery on offer, a scenic road trip can be one of the highlights of your vacation!

If you aren’t comfortable driving in a new place, then the Alaska Railroad can be a great option. Just remember that a train won’t drop you off in front of your hotel. So you’ll need to supplement with taxis or ride-shares for the smaller journeys.

Alaska is generally pretty safe.

But especially if you’re into the whole nature and adventure thing, it’s got its own set of risks.

Wildlife, weather, and remote locations can be challenging. Accidents often involve outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, or boating.

Alaska’s wilderness is stunning but can be unforgiving if you’re not prepared. Weather can change quickly, and it’s easy to get lost or encounter wildlife.

When it comes to crime, Alaska does have higher rates compared to the U.S. average. Property crime is more common than violent crime, but it’s always a good idea to be cautious and aware of your surroundings.

Do you need travel insurance in Alaska? Yes, travel insurance in Alaska is highly recommended. Unsafe roads, winter sports accidents, and food poisoning are only a few examples of when travel insurance could come in handy. EKTA offers worldwide travel insurance with 24/7 service and no hidden fees or restrictions.

 • Warm Clothes: Layers are your best friend.
 • Waterproof Boots: You’ll thank yourself later.
 • Snacks: Granola bars or trail mix work great.
 • Sunscreen: Yep, even in Alaska.
 • A Good Camera: For those Insta-worthy shots.
 • Bug Spray: Those mosquitoes don’t play.
 • First-Aid Kit: Basic stuff like band-aids and antiseptic.
 • Bear Spray. Pretty self-explanatory.
 • Reusable Water Bottle: Gotta stay hydrated.
 • Binoculars : For wildlife spotting and scenic views.

A 7-day Alaska itinerary can provide a fantastic introduction to the state’s remarkable landscapes, wildlife, and outdoor activities.

From fishing in the bountiful waters of Homer to hiking through the Kenai Fjords National Park, every day offers a new adventure that will create lasting memories.

Of course, Alaska has a lot more to offer than we could fit into this one-week itinerary. Other famous places, like the St. Elias National Park, would need some more time to explore.

Lastly, you can also opt to go on an Alaska Cruise if a self-drive itinerary is not the best fit for you.

If you can’t get enough of winter destinations just yet, make sure to check out my favorite Christmas weekend getaways.

On the 26 Glacier Cruise, you’ll see several types of glaciers, including Alpine hanging, Piedmont and Tidewater. Glacier calvings (when broken pieces of ice fall into the water and become icebergs) are normally seen on each cruise. Lunch is included onboard. Excellent trip. Well planned out. We were able to get all our additional destinations accommodated.

Paul Williams Canada

Just a note to tell you how much we enjoyed our unexpected trip. Thank you for organising this so quickly for us to fill in the extra 5 days after the cruise was terminated.Everything went so smoothly, and we were on everyone's' 'list' on all the transfers. The best part was the small plane flight back from Denali- it was brilliant. The cruises on the Fiords were also a highlight. So, thanks again. We are thinking of coming back to view the Northern Lights at Fairbanks and also the start of the Iditarod.

Lynne Sydney, Australia

Submissions for 90th anniversary Fur Rondy pin accepted until June 7

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Fur Rondy collector pins have been a staple of Anchorage’s winter carnival since the 1940s. Each year is a different pin design. Last year’s pin sold out with over 7,000 pins purchased.

The design for the 2025 pin hasn’t been decided yet — that’s because people have until 4pm on Friday June 7 to submit their ideas for the pin. Since Fur Rondy is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2025, the pin is expected to be a popular one.

The rules for submitting a pin design can be found at the event website.

Fur Rondy takes place in Anchorage from February 20 to March 2.

I think what draws a lot of people to cruise ships is the community aspect of it. You are on a boat with a bunch of strangers who all have at least one common interest with you, which is a love of sailing. Cruises make traveling more fun and can even be more cost-effective than a land vacation.

If you are looking for the latest and greatest cruise ships coming out this year, I have you covered. I am going to tell you the top five new cruise ships in 2024 and what makes them better than the older models.

First on the list is the Ilma. This boat is a luxury yacht, made by Ritz-Carlton. Its maiden voyage will be in the Mediterranean in late summer or early fall. It has over 200 suites, holds over 450 guests, and costs about $1,000 per night per person.

When the boat is anchored, you can use some of the ship’s water toys and swim in the Mediterranean. Not to mention that all the rooms on this ship will have a balcony with an ocean view.

The ship has an infinity pool, five restaurants, six bars, several lounges, and a spa. This ship is truly one of a kind and a sail on here will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
