lagardere travel retail gabon

GABON. Lagardère Travel Retail has won the exclusive rights to manage 600sq m of retail and dining space at Libreville Leon Mba International Airport under a long-term concession.

The contract was awarded by GSEZ Airport, a subsidiary of Gabon Special Economic Zone (GSEZ), a public-private partnership between Olam International, the Gabonese Republic and Africa Finance Corporation.

Lagardère Travel Retail’s offer will include an Aelia Duty Free store from spring 2019 along with two Relay stores. The latter will feature press, magazines and books, food & beverage, high-tech accessories, hygiene products as well as gifts & souvenirs. Next summer, the company will open a restaurant offering international cuisine.

The retailer said its concepts would “significantly improve passenger experience and diversify the offer within the airport”.

GSEZ Airport has managed the airport facility since October, with new airport due to open in 2021. This will be built across 35,000sq m on three floors, with capacity of two million passengers a year in the first phase (and five million eventually). The space allocated to Lagardère Travel Retail in the new airport will be over 1,000sq m.

Airport Director Indranil Gupta said: “Our priority is to improve the quality of service and the shopping experience of our passengers. The new space developed by Lagardère Travel Retail will enable us to create a best-in-class commercial environment within the existing airport, before building an extended commercial area in the new airport.”

Journey towards new successes in Africa

The contract is Lagardère’s second in Africa in the last two years. In January 2018 , the retailer commenced operations at  Blaise Diagne International Airport in Senegal, where it now operates 1,100sqm of retail.

Lagardère Travel Retail Chief Operating Officer of Europe, Middle East and Africa Frédéric Chevalier  said in December that securing an additional African contract represented a “very important step” in the retailer’s “journey towards new successes in Africa”.

He added: “We have demonstrated our ability to bring the best international operational standards to Africa while developing a very strong and successful local offer. We are very proud and excited about this new opportunity in Gabon.”

Libreville Leon Mba International Airport is the only international airport in Gabon and a key location for air traffic in Western Africa and Europe. Lagardère TR provides strong local flavour in Africa

lagardere travel retail gabon

Sountou Bousso, CEO Senegal and Gabon, Lagardère Travel Retail .

Sountou Bousso, the newly appointed Lagardère Travel Retail CEO for Senegal and Gabon is relishing the opportunity to maximise the potential of the company’s African duty free and travel retail business.

A Senegalese citizen, Bousso joined the company from global catering company Newrest, where he most recently served as general manager for Cameroon and Senegal.

During his time at Newrest, Bousso gained a glimpse of Lagardère’s Senegal operations at Blaise Diagne International Airport which commenced in 2017. This followed the capture of a 10-year $575 million contract encompassing a duty free store and Relay outlet.

Over in Gabon , Lagardère Travel Retail signed a service agreement with GSEZ Airport, a subsidiary of Gabon Special Economic Zone  (a private partnership between Olam International, the Gabonese Republic and Africa Finance Corporation)  to operate at Libreville Leon Mba Airport in 2019. The retailer has the exclusive right to run over 600sq m of retail and food.

CUSTOMERS SEEK ‘BEST POSSIBLE’ SERVICE

“Customers are looking for the best possible service,” Bousso told TRBusiness in a revealing interview. “The African market is becoming increasingly sophisticated in line with rising incomes and is also very diversified.

“Passengers shopping in our African stores are happy to find everything in one place. This includes perfumes and cosmetics from the world’s largest luxury brands and a selection of local craft products highlighting the region’s know-hows.”

lagardere travel retail gabon

Local products are given a central space in Dakar at Blaise Diagne International Airport.

He added: “This combination is key to our success. It enables our customers, whether they are African nationals, business travellers or tourists to access a broad choice of high-quality products at duty free prices.”

Local products are allocated a large central space in the Dakar store at Blaise Diagne International Airport. This highlights the talents of Senegalese entrepreneurs and craftsmen. “We showcase local cosmetics, food or jewellery brands. The store design itself is inspired by South Senegal. This gives local products even more focus. We want to promote out talented local craftsmen.”

Lagardère Travel Retail does not only meet shoppers’ expectations across its African businesses, it also supports the local economy and value chain by sourcing many products locally.

lagardere travel retail gabon

An exterior shot of the Lagardère Travel Retail Relay outlet at Blaise Diagne International Airport in Senegal.

An example of this was when Bousso’s predecessor Bruno Bouchacourt, who has retired from Lagardère after two decades, once discovered a local jam producer. His aim was to introduce her products in the retailer’s shops.

Bouchacourt assisted her with the development of the business so the jams were manufactured in accordance with Lagardère Travel Retail’s quality standards. In turn, the producer was able to create additional jobs for women in her community.

“This kind of success story, which puts ethics and people back at the centre will ensure the sustainable and profitable growth of our industry.”

CONSOLIDATION OBJECTIVE

Growing the company’s businesses in Senegal and Gabon and consolidating its position as the leading international retailer in West Africa are important objectives. Bousso said: “It’s a very competitive market, but today we remain the preferred partner for airports in Western Africa.

“Our commitment to operational excellence and proximity is making the difference wherever we are. The in-store experience we offer will always need to be an exceptional moment when travellers feel they’re our guests and when we go the extra mile to deliver the best service possible to them.”

lagardere travel retail gabon

Lagardère Travel Retail signed a service agreement with GSEZ Airport, a subsidiary of Gabon Special Economic Zone (a private partnership between Olam International, the Gabonese Republic and Africa Finance Corporation) to operate at Libreville Leon Mba Airport in Gabon last year.

At the moment, however, traffic levels are low in Senegal and Gabon and business has been hit hard by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. This has forced Lagardère to be agile and flexible. “We are fully confident activity will return and have managed to retain all our staff. As a result, we can capitalise on their experience and business knowledge for the recovery.”

The early signs of recovery in Senegal and Gabon over the past few months have been encouraging, according to Bousso. That said, there is a long way to go until traffic reaches pre-Covid-19 levels. “In the meantime, we are working hard to make our business more efficient and agile to capitalise on the returning traffic.”

lagardere travel retail gabon

A strong local product offer is also in place at Libreville Leon Mba International Airport in Gabon.

Restoring the faith of consumers will be the main challenge in the post Covid-19 world, but Bousso is not expecting any new purchasing trends among African consumers. “We’re actually anticipating an acceleration of existing trends. Customers will be happy to return to stores and buy their favourite products after a long period without travelling.

“We treat customers as our guests. Each of them receives our full attention to make their experience a very special one.”

Lagardère Travel Retail extends West African footprint

By Hibah Noor

lagardere travel retail gabon

Lagardère Travel Retail at Cotonou International Airport

Lagardère Travel Retail has announced its agreement with Société des Aéroports du Benin (SAB), a state-owned company, to operate duty free, travel essentials and foodservice operations at Cotonou International Airport, Benin.

Local operations will be managed through a joint-venture company – Lagardère Travel Retail Keyla – co-owned by Lagardère Travel Retail and local partner Keyla Distribution, a Beninese company specializing in distribution and retail in West Africa.

SAB and Lagardère Travel Retail Keyla have agreed to a long-term concession contract with the new operations due to open in 2024. The commercial offer will comprise of arrival and departure Duty Free stores, a convenience store and a dining area. According to Lagardère Travel Retail, this exclusive, long-term contract underscores the company’s longest-standing expertise of delivering operational and commercial value through a Three Business Lines model.

Suited to mid-sized international airports, the master concession model provides several benefits including a holistic understanding of customer needs to enhance the passengers experience, increased commercial revenues for both landlords and brands, and enhanced agility, flexibility, and synergies in operations.

In line with its development strategy, the Benin government has embarked on an extensive renovation and expansion program for Cotonou International Airport. This initiative targets high international airport standards and the alignment of the airport infrastructure with the growth of air traffic.

The airport expects to welcome over 520,000 passengers in 2023, matching its 2019 traffic figure. This growth is driven by the government’s strong commitment to making tourism the cornerstone of Benin’s development. It also positions the airport as a hub in West Africa.

Lagardère Travel Retail said key to its success in securing the contract with SAB has been its commitment to supporting the airport in elevating the passenger experience, applying the same high standards of excellence as anywhere else in the world. “Harnessing its global expertise and vast network of international brands, Lagardère Travel Retail will be creating unique shopping experiences and significantly investing into staff training to offer the best customer service,” the company added.

Along with offering top internationally recognized brands in Cotonou, Lagardère Travel Retail said its teams will strive to create authentic, local product offerings, “to bring the best of the local culture to travelers while effectively supporting local producers and economies.”

The company will showcase the Beninese culture, combining voodoo traditions, legends of the Abomeh amazons, folklores and tales. As part of its commercial offering, Lagardère Travel Retail has also developed a IROKO Bar food concept, based on the sacred Beninese sacred iroko tree. The bar will be a central focus for any passenger passing through the airport.

This local and cultural approach echoes the ambition of the Beninese government to leverage the tourism sector to boost economic growth. The country already attracts an increasing number of regional and international tourists and aims to reach two million visitors annually. The tourism sector is the third-largest source of jobs in the country.

Lagardère Travel Retail’s COO EMEA & Chief Transformation Officer Frédéric Chevalier commented, “We’re delighted to have secured this exclusive master concession at Cotonou Airport alongside our very strong local partner.

“We look forward to helping raise the shopping and dining experience through our unrivalled holistic approach to passenger needs. By working closely together with Keyla, we want to support SAB in raising its standards of excellence and appeal to international travelers.

“We have significant growth ambitions for our operations on the African continent and these new operations in Benin will continue to consolidate our position as a leading international travel retailer in the region.”

Armand Kpindjo, Commercial Manager at SAB, added, “Confidence and partnership are the two key words of our deal with Lagardère Travel Retail Keyla. With a refurbished and certified airport, Cotonou aims to offer the best experience to passengers as well as increase nonregulated revenues. The international reputation of Lagardère Travel Retail associated to the African know-how of Keyla is the most relevant way to develop a true partnership based on a custom-made offer fitting passenger expectations.”

Lagardère Travel Retail has pursued an active expansion strategy in West Africa since 2017 with the Group now operating in five countries: Senegal, Gabon, Mauritania, Gambia and Benin.

Lagardère Travel Retail appoints new CEO for Senegal & Gabon

Lagardère Travel Retail today announces the appointment of Sountou Bousso as Chief Executive Officer, Lagardère Travel Retail Senegal & Gabon, with immediate effect. Sountou takes over from Bruno Bouchacourt, who is retiring after two decades at Lagardère Travel Retail.

A Senegalese citizen, Sountou Bousso will be leading the development of Lagardère Travel Retail's operations in both Senegal and Gabon. This appointment is aligned to Lagardère Travel Retail's ambition to promote local leadership and empowerment. Lagardère Travel Retail strives to combine the highest international standards with a commitment to promote and leverage local expertise and know-hows. Its world-class international concept Aelia Duty Free brings together powerful, international brands and unique ranges of local brands to give a true sense of place.

Sountou Bousso is joining from Newrest International Group, the global catering group, where he most recently was General Manager for Cameroon and Senegal. Before this, he has been the General Manager of Newrest in Angola and in New Caledonia. Sountou hold Technician Diploma from Ecole Supérieure Polytechnique (Senegal) and Engineering degree from ESIAB School of Engineering (France). Sountou also holds two Master's Degree in Marketing Management and International Trade (Brest Business School) and in International Management (HEC Paris).

Bruno Bouchacourt has spent nearly 20 years at Lagardère Travel Retail and he has held many different roles in France and abroad. Among these, Bruno has been the manager of the duty-free operations in Eurodis (Eurotunnel - France), and he has overseen the development of international duty free operations. In 2012 he moved to Italy and successfully contributed to the takeover of the duty-free activities from Aeroporti di Roma. After the acquisition of Airest in 2015, he became responsible for the entire duty free and fashion business in Italy.

Commenting on the appointment, Frédéric Chevalier, Chief Operating Officer, EMEA at Lagardère Travel Retai l, said : « I am delighted to have Sountou onboard and confident his international experience, in depth local knowledge and track record of running local operations within complex global organizations will further consolidate our position as leading international operator in Western Africa.
