Sountou hold Technician Diploma from Ecole Supérieure Polytechnique (Senegal) and Engineering degree from ESIAB School of Engineering (France). Sountou also holds two Master's Degree in Marketing Management and International Trade (Brest Business School) and in International Management (HEC Paris).

Bruno Bouchacourt has spent nearly 20 years at Lagardère Travel Retail and he has held many different roles in France and abroad. Among these, Bruno has been the manager of the duty-free operations in Eurodis (Eurotunnel - France), and he has overseen the development of international duty free operations. In 2012 he moved to Italy and successfully contributed to the takeover of the duty-free activities from Aeroporti di Roma. After the acquisition of Airest in 2015, he became responsible for the entire duty free and fashion business in Italy.

Commenting on the appointment, Frédéric Chevalier, Chief Operating Officer, EMEA at Lagardère Travel Retai l, said : « I am delighted to have Sountou onboard and confident his international experience, in depth local knowledge and track record of running local operations within complex global organizations will further consolidate our position as leading international operator in Western Africa. 'I also want to take this opportunity to thank Bruno for his tremendous contribution to growing the company and in particular for successfully launching our operations in Western Africa. I know he will be very missed by all the colleagues and business partners he has worked with over so many years. I envy Bruno's future guests who will very soon enjoy his cooking talents in the guest house he will be opening in the South of France'.

Lagardère expands in West Africa with Benin master concession

By Kapila Ireland in Airports , Latest News , Lead Stories , Middle East & Africa , Retail News October 17, 2023 Comments Off on Lagardère expands in West Africa with Benin master concession

Lagardère Travel Retail now operates in five countries in West Africa including Senegal, Gabon, Mauritania, Gambia and Benin.

Cotonou -irport

Lagardère Travel Retail has been awarded a master concession by Société des Aéroports du Benin (SAB) to operate Duty Free, Travel Essentials and Foodservice operations at Cotonou International Airport in Benin, West Africa. Lagardère Travel Retail now operates in five countries in West Africa including Senegal, Gabon, Mauritania, Gambia and Benin.

The agreement with (SAB), a state-owned company, will be managed through a joint-venture company,  Lagardère Travel Retail Keyla, co-owned by Lagardère Travel Retail and local partner Keyla Distribution. The joint venture is tasked with delivering an ambitious commercial growth plan and to best convey Benin’s rich heritage and culture.

The long-term concession contract covers arrival and departure duty free stores, a convenience store and a dining area, with the new operations slated to open in 2024. The government of Benin has initiated an extensive renovation and expansion programme for Cotonou International Airport, whichexpects to welcome over 520,000 passengers in 2023, matching traffic numbers of 2019.

The new master concession represents Lagardère Travel Retail’s expertise in delivering operational and commercial value through a unique Three Business Lines model. According to Lagardère, this model is especially suited to mid-sized international airports and provides benefits such as “a holistic understanding of customer needs to enhance the passengers experience, increased commercial revenues for both landlords and brands, and enhanced agility, flexibility, and synergies in operations.”

Lagardère Travel Retail has committed to supporting the airport in elevating the passenger experience through “unique” shopping experiences and significantly investing in staff training to offer the best customer service. In addition to offering internationally recognized brands in Cotonou, Lagardère aims to create authentic, local product offerings, to bring the best of the local culture to travellers while effectively supporting local producers and economies.

The retailer’s locally-empowered teams, will set out to develop an offer showcasing Beninese culture, highlighting voodoo traditions, legends of the Abomeh amazons, folklores and tales. Lagardère has also developed a local food concept, the IROKO Bar, paying homage to the Beninese sacred iroko tree. The bar has been designed to be a central focus for any passenger passing through the airport.

Lagardère Travel Retail COO EMEA & Chief Transformation Officer Frédéric Chevalier stated: “We’re delighted to have secured this exclusive master concession at Cotonou airport alongside our very strong local partner. We look forward to helping raise the shopping and dining experience through our unrivalled holistic approach to passenger needs. By working closely together with Keyla, we want to support SAB in raising its standards of excellence and appeal to international travelers. We have significant growth ambitions for our operations on the African continent and these new operations in Benin will continue to consolidate our position as a leading international travel retailer in the region.”

SAB Commercial Manager Armand Kpindjo added : “Confidence and partnership are the two key words of our deal with Lagardère Travel Retail Keyla. With a refurbished and certified Airport, Cotonou aims to offer the best experience to passengers as well as increase nonregulated revenues. The international reputation of Lagardère Travel Retail associated to the African know-how of Keyla is the most relevant way to develop a true partnership based on a custom-made offer fitting passenger expectations.”

Lagardère Travel Retail

2022 sales (million).

Lagardère Travel Retail posted €5,200 million in managed turnover across its three business lines in 2022, including joint-venture revenues and those from its important food & beverage division. Excluding the F&B component (€937 million), the figure for retail alone stands at €4,263 million, placing the company fourth in our rankings. Crucially, the Lagardère Group division also moved back into profit.

Revenues swung back to around -10% behind 2019 levels across a well-balanced portfolio. Duty free & fashion accounted for 38% of sales (35% in 2021), travel essentials 39% (43% in 2021) and food service 23% (22% in 2021).

Encouragingly, the momentum has continued in 2023, with all regions except France reaching revenues in Q1 on par with or ahead of the same period in 2019. North America and EMEA performed well, while Asia Pacific performance has accelerated from a low comparable base in Q1 2022.

There, China remains a key focus market, one in which the group has built a strong network in duty paid stores across air and rail channels.

Lagardère boosts West Africa presence with Cotonou concession in Benin

By Kristiane Sherry | Tuesday, 17 October 2023 15:19

Cotonou Airport Benin Lagardère TR

Lagardère Travel Retail has won a master concession to operate retail and F&B at Cotonou Airport Benin.

Lagardère Travel Retail has expanded its footprint across West Africa by signing an agreement with state-owned Société des Aéroports du Benin to operate the master concession at Cotonou International Airport.

Under the deal, Lagardère will manage the duty free, travel essentials and foodservice operations at the airport.

Local activities will be managed through a joint venture with Keyla Distribution, a Beninese distribution and retail firm with business across West Africa.

Known as Lagardère Travel Retail Keyla, the JV will kick off the “long term” concession contract in 2024.

With the new Benin concession, Lagardère now has operations in five West African countries. The others are Senegal, Gabon, Mauritania, and Gambia.

Lagardère in Benin: long-standing expertise

The commercial offer spans arrival and departure duty free stores, a convenience store, and a dining area.  The exclusive, long-term contract underscores Lagardère Travel Retail’s long-standing expertise in delivering operational and commercial value through a Three Business Lines, the retailer said.

According to Lagardère, the master concession model is especially suited to mid-sized international airports.

Benefits include, it said, a holistic understanding of customer needs to enhance the overall experience. In addition, commercial revenues are boosted for both landlords and brands.

The model also includes “enhanced” agility, flexibility, and synergies.

Benin’s government has also implemented a renovation and expansion programme for Cotonou International Airport.

The airport expects to handle 520,000 passengers in 2023, on-par with 2019 levels.

Growth is coming from a focus on Benin tourism, and positions the airport as a West Africa hub. Airlines are said to be considering opening new routes to the country.

Benin aims to attract two million visitors annually. Today the tourism sector is the third-largest source of jobs in the country.

Cotonou plans

Lagardère’s contract will see it elevate the passenger experience through the airport. It says it will bring in an array of international brands and invest in staff training.

Alongside big-name brands, the retailer also plans to build an authentic local product offering. Through this it will offer passengers the best of Benin culture while supporting local producers. This includes bringing together voodoo traditions, legends of the Abomeh amazons, plus local folklore and tales.

Local food concept the IROKO Bar is inspired by the famous iroko tree, considered sacred by many.

“We’re delighted to have secured this exclusive master concession at Cotonou airport alongside our very strong local partner,” said Frédéric Chevalier, COO EMEA & Chief Transformation Officer, Lagardère Travel Retail.

“We look forward to helping raise the shopping and dining experience through our unrivalled holistic approach to passenger needs.

“By working closely together with Keyla, we want to support SAB in raising its standards of excellence and appeal to international travellers.

“We have significant growth ambitions for our operations on the African continent and these new operations in Benin will continue to consolidate our position as a leading international travel retailer in the region.”

Armand Kpindjo, Commercial Manager SAB, added: “Confidence and partnership are the two key words of our deal with Lagardère Travel Retail Keyla.

“With a refurbished and certified Airport, Cotonou aims to offer the best experience to passengers as well as increase non regulated revenues.

“The international reputation of Lagardère Travel Retail associated with the African know-how of Keyla is the most relevant way to develop a true partnership based on a custom-made offer fitting passenger expectations.”

Lagardère Travel Retail’s nine-month sales soared by 26.5% year-on-year to €3,719 million, propelled by record quarterly sales in Q3 .
