It was a great trip! GREAT leader!
We experienced more of Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons with this tour, than we would have on our own. We enjoyed meeting new people, seeing all the sights, and not having to worry about driving and directions. Be prepared to do a lot of walking/hiking - but it is worth it!

Yellowstone & The Grand Tetons

10 days / 9 nights.

Off we go to see America’s first national park and the grand-daddy of them all…Yellowstone!

Highlights:

Pitchfork fondue dinner

Medora Musical

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Yellowstone National Park

Jackson Hole float trip

Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary

Tatanka - filming site of Dances With Wolves

Off we go to see America's first national park and the grand-daddy of them all…Yellowstone! Our route first takes us through the fields and farms of Minnesota where we will pause for our first overnight in Alexandria, MN.

Leaving the upper Midwest behind, we cross into North Dakota where Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders were well-known. We're heading for the town of Medora with our usual stretch and meal breaks. Once arriving, check into the Badlands Hotel with time to freshen up for tonight's events. First experience The Pitchfork Fondue. Every evening chefs load steaks onto pitchforks and fondue them western-style for your enjoyment. Savor your steak and all the fixin's as you overlook the picturesque Badlands from atop a bluff at the Tjaden Terrace. Set in the outdoor splendor of the Badlands and the star filled sky, the high energy, western-style Medora Musical is dedicated to the legacy of America's 26th President Theodore Roosevelt.

This morning we tour Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It memorializes his immense contributions to securing the beauty of the area through conservation. Entering the park is through Medora which is home to Teddy Roosevelt's first ranching cabin called the Maltese Cross Ranch. The rugged Badlands provide the scenic backdrop to this park and the loop drive provides an opportunity for viewing buffalo, deer, elk, bighorn sheep, wild horses and even prairie dog towns. We motor through the Badlands which are part of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, viewing unique landscapes plus the tragic Custer Battle Monument. Tonight finds us in Sheridan, WY for our next hotel stay. Enjoy an included dinner at a local favorite this evening.

We continue motoring our way westward with our usual breaks and picture stops along the way. Get a little more information with a stop at the Cody, WY Visitor Center before stopping for an included lunch in the delightful and historic Irma Hotel. Indulge in the romance of an era when Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show try-outs were held on the lot west of this hotel, when buffalo ran amok in downtown Cody, and when European nobility headquartered at The Irma while on hunting treks throughout the wild lands. Leaving Cody, we arrive at our hotel (TBA) adjacent to Yellowstone National Park early evening.

Get acquainted with Yellowstone National Park, a wonderland of natural beauty and geological oddities with a local expert guide. See one-of-a-kind sights like Canyon Village, the Norris Basin Geyser and the centerpiece, Old Faithful. There will be time to explore the area and witness an eruption of the world's most famous geyser. After a full day of drinking in Mother Nature's beauty, we continue to another amazing destination, Jackson Hole, WY. Enjoy a two-night stay here and a relaxing evening.

After breakfast, we travel a short distance to enjoy this picturesque area of the Tetons on board a Scenic Float Trip down the Snake River. You'll be accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who will not only navigate the waters, but offer education on the history, geology, and local lore of Jackson Hole. Return to your hotel for a relaxing afternoon and exploration of your own. Tonight join the fun for dinner and show at the always great Jackon Hole Playhouse.

We depart Jackson Hole enroute to the only public off-range pastures in the United States located on an Indian Reservation. Wild Mustangs embody the mystique of the European conquistadors, Native Americans, settlers, and miners. Visit Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary to see these magnificent animals in their free-roaming environment on a working cattle ranch. Lunch included at Trailhead Restaurant. Travel continue to the town of Buffalo, WY and our overnight.

Motoring continues eastward crossing seemingly desolate countryside. Deadwood, SD is on the horizon and we arrive later this morning. Named by early settlers because of the dead trees found near the city, it became a boom town and remains so today with tourists visiting from all over the country. Step inside the Days of 76 Museum, to learn how the likes of Wild Bill Cody and Calamity Jane once walked the streets and the likes of muleskinners, miners and madams made their home. Thirty to sixty million bison once roamed the nearby plains. To learn much more we visit Tatanka. Inspired by actor Kevin Costner's time with the Lakota People while filming the movie "Dances with Wolves," the Ta'Tanka story focuses on the symbiotic relationship between the Lakota Nation and the majestic North American Plains Bison. Later, check into your centrally located Deadwood hotel to relax and to explore the area at leisure

Next stop is for lunch and shopping at Wall Drug. Historically known for its free ice water to weary travelers, today, over 2 million visitors a year stop at this popular roadside attraction for a meal, shopping, a 5 cent coffee, and ice water - which is still free! Our travel continues to Sioux Falls, SD for our final over- night stay.

The final leg of our journey is here. We have miles to make across South Dakota but are soon back in familiar territory. We hope you enjoyed your western adventure with us!

What Our Guests Have To Say

icon

We had a wonderful experience with Covered Ground Tours. Cody was our guide and he was informative, polite, patient, protective of nature and us. From Woodchucks (not pictured), Buffalo, mule deer, to bears, we felt blessed to enjoy God’s creations! And the beauty of Old Faithful and the vastness of Yellowstone! ❤️

Letting Kody with Covered Ground Tours do the driving was absolutely the Best decision. Not only did it give my husband the opportunity to relax and watch the wonderful scenery; but Kody was kind enough to drop us off at points of interest and then parked the vehicle. Having a bad knee I really appreciated that. Kody was professional and extremely informative about the history and geological formation of the park. It was a wonderful experience and educational.

Colter exceeded my expectations with his tour of Yellowstone. He accommodated my large group of women and curated our trip based on our needs. He was easy to get along with and we had a blast with him. He knew all the great views and we even got lucky and saw buffalo. Great communication leading up to the trip.

Excellent Yellowstone Park day tour! Our tour guide Mattie knows the best spots for us to see. Yellowstone Canyon was absolutely a beautiful spot. The van was very comfortable. We got to see some exciting bison herds coming through a rest stop. Enjoyed the day!

Colter went out of his way to make our day perfect. He was on time picking us up, accommodating with any and all of our requests, and had incredible facts about Yellowstone. He was personable and professional. The van was clean and comfortable. We had an amazing experience and will cherish our memories forever!

We had an amazing day with Coulter on the Lower Loop Tour. He was very informative about the geographical history of the region as well as the animals. Coulter went out of his way to make sure all of the people on the tour were having a great time. We were very excited to see elk, bison, and a couple of grizzlies! Don't miss this experience.

The tour was excellent! Cody did an amazing job providing us with information on the places we were visiting including history and geology. His timing was wonderful and he accommodated everyone's physical needs with logistics. He gives service with a smile. Thank you for such a great experience.

What a wonderful day we had. The tour guides are friendly, fun and knowledgeable. It was so lovely to be a passenger and just relax and enjoy the views. Made some new friends and would definetly do it again! Highly recommend.

Had a wonderful experience with CoveredGround Tours! We booked a private tour and got to see everything we asked to. Colter was very knowledgeable and got us answers for all our questions! Would not recommend anyone else, the experience was perfect! If you are looking for a high quality tour, go with this company!

A great tour of an amazing American landmark. My family and I had never been to Yellowstone and our tour allowed us to see all the sights that the park had to offer. Our tour guide Cody was friendly and very knowledgeable, enhancing an already amazing experience. If you have one day to spend in Yellowstone, using this tour guide would be a great way to go!

It was so nice to sit back and and have a knowledgeable guide take you through all the highlights of Yellowstone along with history and information we would have never known exploring on our own. Each stop was the perfect amount of time. Maddie, our guide, was sweet, cultured, and loves what she does. Our family has memories to last a lifetime.

Our family of 10 had an AMAZING tour of Yellowstone’s Southern Loop with Maddy! She educated us on the park, we stopped at ALL the key sights, and she kept all our attention from our 7 year old to our 70 year old. We 100% would recommend Covered Ground Tours to anyone looking for a good time while seeing all the key sights & learning important information about Yellowstone! Thank you Covered Ground Tours for making our Yellowstone Family Adventure AWESOME!!

AWESOME TOUR! Our guide, Madison, was fun, knowledgeable, and a great conversationalist! She made sure we were able to take our time at each stop. The ride in the van was comfortable and spacious. I would recommend and book it again!

The tour was absolutely wonderful! We originally booked through another company which turned out to be disorganized and unprofessional, but Covered Ground Tours came through and gave us an experience that exceeded our expectations. The tour guide, Phil, was great!

LOOKING FOR A MORE “HANDS ON” WAY TO SEE YELLOWSTONE?

Snowcoach Tours are one of the most popular ways to tour Yellowstone in winter, but some folks may be in the mood for a more active, personalized experience. If that sounds like an appealing way to see Yellowstone National Park in winter, please also consider one of our guided Snowmobile Tours!

Our West Yellowstone snowcoaches are the same buses we use for our summer tours, mounted on oversized low-pressure tires. These tires allow our coaches to travel smoothly over the snow, while keeping you higher up for better viewing.

Disclaimer: Actual tour buses may differ than what is represented in photographs.

If you are staying in West Yellowstone or Gardiner, our driver will pick you up right at your hotel lobby. If you are coming in from out of town, please meet at the following locations:

 • West Yellowstone Snowcoach tours meet at Yellowstone Park Hotel, located at 201 Grizzly Ave, West Yellowstone, MT 59758
 • Our Summer Bus Tour office is located at 415 Yellowstone Avenue, West Yellowstone, MT 59758.
 • Our Gardiner office is located at 905 Scott Street W, Gardiner, MT 59030.

We kindly ask that you be in your hotel lobby ready to go by 8:00am. If you are not staying overnight in West Yellowstone or Gardiner, please meet at the main office no later than 8:00am.

Purchasing boxed lunches for your party is highly recommended for all tours, particularly during the winter months when food service inside the Park is extremely limited, but during the summer months as well since summer crowds can result in long wait times for food service. Boxed lunches can be reserved directly through Yellowstone Vacation Tours when you call in to book your tour, but must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance so they can be ready for pick-up on the morning of your tour.

Our snowcoaches do have heaters, but please come dressed for winter weather. We make several stops for you to get out and take pictures or take a short walk around, so you’ll be grateful to be dressed warmly during your time off the bus. We suggest dressing in layers so you can regulate your own personal temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 'black to yellow trail' tour.

The ‘Black to Yellow Trail’ tour route is historic. It was promoted a century ago to attract Americans from Chicago to travel across the country. It started in the Black Hills of South Dakota and ended in Yellowstone National Park.

What is the activity level for this tour?

This is an easy to light moderate tour. We will do many walks and be active, but they will all be over flat terrain on established trails. Any walking is optional. Just talk to your guide and they will figure out what works best for you.

We just want you to know that this is not a ‘sit in the van and stare out the windows’ tour, nor is it an intensive trek through mountains. It is an adventure, meant to be enjoyed at a relaxed pace, where you can take your time to learn about the history, the wildlife, and the characters who lived in the region.

Memorable Meetings In Yellowstone

Meeting in Yellowstone

There are the things you need for a meeting or event: spaces that meet your group’s requirements, comfortable lodging, food and beverage, and technology. And then there are things that take the meeting to the next level: appealing activities, a helpful on-site team, and high-quality food. Yellowstone hits all of these categories.

Bride & Groom with a Historic Yellow Bus

“The draw of having our annual fall meeting in Yellowstone, at the Old Faithful Inn, played a significant role in its attendance being as high as it’s ever been,” says Chris Brown, the executive director of the Wyoming Hospitality & Tourism Coalition (WHTC), which rotates the location of its fall conferences around the state. “Normally, we have 100 to 120 people at the fall conference. When we had it in Yellowstone, there were 158 people. Everyone was excited to come. And for me, when planning the conference, the Xanterra team was responsive to every detail.”

Rick Hoeninghausen, the director of sales and marketing for Yellowstone National Park Lodges (YNPL), managed by the Xanterra Travel Collection, says, “We have the amenities that most conferences need and then we’ve also got Yellowstone National Park. Being able to share its wildlife, landscape, and activities with meeting participants is really special.”

Snow Lodge Meeting Room, Reception Style

The first national park in the U.S., Yellowstone is home to grizzly and black bears, bison, elk, and wolves, among other species. Within its 2.2 million acres — it’s bigger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined — are more than 10,000 thermal features, including more than 500 geysers (more than half of all the geysers in the world). Brown says, “People loved that they could go and watch Old Faithful erupt right outside of the meeting.”

Marisa Cleary, the event and meeting planner for the nonprofit Yellowstone Forever Institute based in Gardiner, Mont., agrees. “Yellowstone is an amazing amenity to be able to offer to our meeting and conference guests,” she says. “We’ve worked with Yellowstone National Park Lodges to create many unique experiences over the years.”

Cleary has planned Yellowstone Forever meetings and events all over the country and says those in Yellowstone are always special. “You can’t get the scenery, history, wildlife, and activities Yellowstone National Park offers anywhere else. Having a meeting or event in Yellowstone is such a special experience.”

All About Timing

Yellowstone National Park Lodges are rarely able to accommodate large groups and events during the park’s peak season in June, July, and August. “The fall (September, October, and November) and winter (January and February) are when we’re best positioned to offer full support to meetings and events,” Hoeninghausen says.

In early October, groups can also have the park’s two most iconic hotels, Old Faithful Inn and Lake Yellowstone Hotel , all to themselves. If your dates align and your group meets attendance and food and beverage minimums, Yellowstone National Park Lodges can keep either of these two properties open the week after they close to the public. This is what the WHTC did at Old Faithful Inn for their fall meeting. (The public makes reservations a year in advance to stay at this 120-year-old inn.)

With the Inn, considered one of the largest wood structures in the world, closed to the public, WHTC’s general sessions could take place in its seven-story lobby. “We put chairs around its fireplace and, of course, made sure the fires were roaring,” says Hoeninghausen, who was actually at the conference as an attendee and WHTC board member.

The Inn’s fireplace is made from 500 tons of rhyolite and has a soaring 82-foot-tall chimney. It’s photographed almost as much as the geyser it’s named after. Attendees slept in historic rooms and ate a tailored menu of steak and lobster in the dining room, which is one of the hardest reservations to get during peak season. “[Old Faithful Inn] was everything I hoped for and more, and everything was executed at the highest level,” says Brown.

While the timing of a meeting has to be just right to take advantage of having Old Faithful Inn and Lake Yellowstone Hotel to yourself (both properties close to the public in early October; a meeting has to start within several days of the closing day), Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel is available from September through Thanksgiving and also in January and February. Thanks to a recent remodel that included the addition of dedicated meeting spaces, including conference rooms named after hot springs in the park, Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel has facilities to host meetings for small boards up to groups as large as 350.

Event-Worthy Culinary Offerings

Meetings at the three hotels include catering from Yellowstone National Park Lodges’ culinary team. Cleary says that the team’s Western BBQ buffet and its Taste of Yellowstone buffet are guest favorites. The Taste of Yellowstone buffet includes roasted trout and bison tenderloin. “Having good meals is so important to an event,” she says. “I think that, even with how unique Yellowstone is, if there wasn’t good food, people wouldn’t like events here as much.”

Mammoth Hotel, Minerva Meeting Room, U-Shape Style

“I know the remote location of Yellowstone can make logistics difficult for catered events, but Yellowstone National Park Lodges has always carried them out so well,” adds Cleary. “And by doing their job so well, they’ve helped us offer many unique experiences to our donors and supporters over the years.” The YNPL team can also work with meeting organizers to develop custom menus as it did with the surf and turf menu WHTC wanted.

Activities in the Park

But, naturally, meeting in Yellowstone is not just about good food. Take care of your business in the morning, and then spend afternoons cross-country skiing or hiking through geyser basins, watching wildlife, taking a photography workshop or a class in craft cocktails, or even painting en plein air alongside a local artist.

Weather prevented the WHTC group from doing its planned bike tour of one of the park’s geyser basins, but YNPL helped them pivot to a private tour of the geyser basin on a vintage bus. Hoeninghausen says, “Groups tell us what they want to do, and we can put together activities for them.”

Memories to Last

The YNPL retail department can customize park souvenirs ranging from clothing to glassware and also curate gift baskets for participants. “We can do all kinds of custom items for corporate and wedding groups,” Hoeninghausen says. “Attendees have something to take home that reminds them of their amazing experiences in Yellowstone.”

Very good app. Maps need improvement

Overall, I think this app is pretty well put together, and anyone visiting a National Park or NPS-maintained site should have this app downloaded. It is very nice that you can download individual parks for offline use. This is especially helpful for parks where there might not be cell service. However, there are a couple things that I would change about the app. First, there should be a way to link your park passes (daily entry, tours, A the B, etc.) to the app. That way you can have everything organized in one place. Second, the maps for individual parks, especially the larger ones, are way too cluttered. Using Yellowstone as an example, there are 515 unique markers on the Yellowstone map. Before it was shuttered, the old Yellowstone app had the PERFECT setup for the map. It would have large markers for the most used points of interest (Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic, Mammoth Hot Springs, etc.), while having smaller markers for less used points (trailheads, vault toilets, picnic areas, etc.) Then, when you zoomed out on the map, you would only see the large, important markers. As you zoomed in, the smaller, less used markers would appear. This helped tremendously by keeping the map from being too littered with markers and by making it easy to find the famous points of interest that most people will be looking for.

Useful app but info not available from other devices

The information on the NPS Park app is very helpful. It contains detailed information about the parks, history, access, parking, lodging, and other amenities. A few areas of improvement would be: 1. to be able to retrieve information saved on one device from another device For example, if you save all the parks that you have visited over the years onto one phone, you can’t retrieve it from a tablet or laptop. On top of which once you get a new phone there’s no way to transfer the information. You have to enter it all over again since there’s no way to retrieve that history. 2. The app has a lot of good information but is not the most intuitive to navigate. Frequently you are told where you can locate information, but there is no link provided to let you go to that page. 3. A note to the NPS developers. While there are buttons on each page that ask whether the page was helpful, there is no place to provide general feedback so that the end-user could provide suggestions.

Awesome start. Hoping for many more features.

Honestly this is one of my favorite apps. Even if I’m not traveling, I like to load the app and explore parks from afar. I love how much love and energy went into this app. It’s obvious that the content comes from people who love the parks as much as we do. Here’s what I’d love to see: Improve offline access: being able to save parks for offline use is awesome. However, the app spends a really long time trying to load when you don’t have internet access before finally giving an error message and then loading after a delay. I wish the app would start in offline mode (offline is default) and then access the internet once the app is loaded. Sort by ability or activity level: I wish I didn’t have to load every single item in a list to see if a trail or thing is ADA accessible. Maybe add an icon to the items on a list… or add a filter. Passport stamp locations: I love this feature. Can the items on this list be clickable? Take me to the entry for that visitors center, so I can find info on accessing it. More pictures: I’m disabled and physical access can be an issue. It’s so cool to be able to see places I’ll never be able to visit. Show me the super advanced hikes I’ll never get to. And show us more wildlife we might have trouble seeing on our visit! I’ve got a million suggestions but you all are busy people. Thanks for making a cool app. Looking forward to updates.

Vintage Images Show Yellowstone Like You've Never Seen It Before

Yellowstone is loved for its geothermal treasures, waterways, and array of wildlife, and is the oldest national park in America's National Park Service (NPS), established way back in 1872. The hit TV series Yellowstone (which follows a ranching family in Montana) had viewers gripped with its fifth season this summer, so come with us as we dig through the site's stunning archive photos, from early animal encounters to thundering falls.

Yellowstone through the ages

Though Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872, the story of this land begins long before that. In fact, it's believed that humans have inhabited the Yellowstone area for more than 11,000 years, with associated tribes including the Kiowa, Coeur d'Alene, Shoshone and Nez Perce. It's also thought that some of the park's modern-day hiking trails stem from Indigenous routes. This photo of a group of Shoshone people was taken in 1871.

By the 1860s, interest in the Yellowstone area's abundant natural wonders was growing and a series of organized expeditions went out to explore the land. The first was the Folsom-Cook-Peterson Expedition of 1869 and the next was led by Henry D. Washburn, surveyor-general of Montana, in 1870. Washburn and his team created detailed maps of the area, as well as sketches of now-famous features, like this one depicting Castle Geyser.

Washburn and his team created detailed maps of the area, as well as sketches of now-famous features, like this one depicting Castle Geyser.

The most famous and comprehensive of these surveys was the 1871 Hayden Expedition, spearheaded by respected geologist Ferdinand V. Hayden. He struck out with a team of scientists (from botanists to zoologists), who set about mapping, sketching and reporting on a treasure-filled world, which was already the domain of trappers and Indigenous tribes. His pack train is pictured here in the Mirror Lake area in 1871.

Another survey led by Hayden took place in 1872 – the team is pictured here in Firehole Basin. The United States Congress were in awe of the materials captured by these explorers, from detailed reports to breathtaking photography and artworks. President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act on 1 March 1872 and Yellowstone became the USA's first national park.

Since vehicles were prohibited in Yellowstone (and during this time, still the domain of society's wealthiest), most travelers would arrive by rail, ready to be picked up for their stagecoach tour. This is Gardner Station, which was served by the Northern Pacific Railway, and acted as a gateway to the park.

Yellowstone is home to the USA's oldest free-roaming bison herd and these hulking creatures have been a draw of the park from the beginning. However, bison were aggressively hunted through the 19th century and their population dwindled dramatically. In an early conservation effort, in 1902, privately owned bison were raised and eventually released into the park's existing herd. Numbers grew into the thousands once more, and today hunting is prohibited in Yellowstone National Park.

1915: the age of the automobile

From 1915, private automobiles were finally allowed within the park. Roads were graded ready for a steady stream of vehicles, and according to NPS, some 3,445 cars entered Yellowstone between 15 June and 30 September 1916. Now, thousands of modern vehicles typically enter the park every day.

A major milestone came in 1916 with the birth of the National Park Service. The Act was signed by the 28th president, Woodrow Wilson and created a new federal organization dedicated to preserving the then 35 established national parks and monuments. The Act would cement the future of marvels like this one: Old Faithful geyser, pictured here circa 1916.

Car production boomed through the Roaring Twenties and a rapidly increasing number of American households owned vehicles. That meant that wide-open wildernesses like Yellowstone National Park were ripe for exploration. Here, in 1920, early campers make the most of a tent attached to their car, in Yellowstone's Mammoth Hot Springs area.

Come winter, though, getting around on two wheels wasn't an option. Though the region's bigger ski resorts wouldn't open until a little later, cross-country skiers would strike out into Yellowstone's snowy plains in the late 19th century and early 1900s. This group of winter adventurers are leaving from a snow-blanketed cabin in early 1920.

Yellowstone's geothermal wonders were, and still are, a major draw of the park. There are more than 10,000 thermal features enveloped within the site today, from belching mud pots and hot springs to geysers shooting water as high as 300 feet (91m) – that record belongs to Steamboat Geyser. Here, visitors from 1920 look on in awe as they explore one of Yellowstone's steaming geyser basins.

1920: geothermal wonders

In 1922, Yellowstone National Park celebrated its 50th birthday. Officials and nature-lovers gathered in the park, at the site where the early Washburn Expedition set up camp, near the junction of the Firehole and Gibbon Rivers. Superintendent Horace M. Albright led the festivities.

1922: golden anniversary celebrations

The park soon started attracting a star-spangled list of travelers too. Here, circa 1926, Western movie star Tom Mix is papped in Yellowstone National Park, after filming on location in the Jackson Hole area.

Back in the 1930s, safety protocols were significantly more lax than they are today. Nowadays, wooden boardwalks typically mark safe routes around Yellowstone's sizzling geothermal sites. But in this photo from 1930, you can see tourists standing moments from Old Faithful as it dramatically erupts. More cautious spectators sit on a fallen tree trunk behind them.

1930: close encounters

Road improvements continued in Yellowstone through the 1930s – but not everyone favored four wheels. This romantic image shows a pair of horse riders deep within the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, circa 1935.

The Second World War took its toll on Yellowstone. Visitor numbers plummeted, improvement works and infrastructure projects stopped in their tracks and resources dwindled as they were pumped into the war effort. Happily, though, the park was still able to serve its main purpose: to protect those precious natural wonders for posterity.

Happily, though, the park was still able to serve its main purpose: to protect those precious natural wonders for posterity.

Still, though, Yellowstone bounced back after the war and in 1948 visitor numbers hit the one million mark for the first time in history. This charming photograph was taken a few years later, in 1955. A young family gather at a viewpoint overlooking Tower Fall, a soaring cascade that plunges down for about 132 feet (40m).

Discover surprising US national park facts you probably didn't know

1950: Yellowstone bounces back

Visitation soared through the 1950s and the National Park Service launched Mission 66. The project aimed to rebuild a park system devastated by war – a whole decade was spent sprucing up facilities and expanding services available to visitors across all national parks, including Yellowstone. A lone woman admires the rugged landscape in this photograph from 1955, when Mission 66 was launched.

Bear safety at Yellowstone was taken much less seriously in earlier decades too. In fact, it was common for motorists to wind down their windows as bears approached or even hop out of their cars and attempt to feed the creatures.

To ease the situation, a comprehensive bear management program was implemented at Yellowstone in 1960. Yellowstone's original Fishing Bridge was built as early as 1902, though the current structure dates to 1937. During the first half of the 20th century, it was the park's star spot for trout fishing – however, dwindling populations meant that fishing was banned here in 1973. Visitors are pictured here enjoying the bridge in 1975 and its sweeping views over Yellowstone Lake still draw the crowds today.

The summer of 1988 was devastating for Yellowstone. In June 1988, lightning started a series of fires across the park and, in keeping with the management plan at the time, they were allowed to blaze. Eventually, some 36% of the park – that's 793,880 acres – was swallowed by fire and more than 300 large mammals died. The park managers eschewed the plan and began fighting the fires in an effort that would cost around $120 million (£98,500). The devastating event has informed national-park fire-management programs across the country.

1995: wolves are reintroduced to Yellowstone

The Nineties was a landmark decade for Yellowstone wildlife. Wolves were hunted into near oblivion throughout the 20th century, but in this decade, experts sought to reverse this. From 1995 through to 1996, 31 gray wolves from Canada were reintroduced to the park. Numbers of these enigmatic predators grew and by 2011, wolves were removed from the endangered species list in Idaho and Montana (though there are now calls to relist them).

The Noughties brought in some good news stories for the park's wildlife too. In 2007, Yellowstone's grizzly bear population was removed from the threatened species list. Habit loss and accidents involving humans had caused their numbers to plunge, but careful management programs allowed populations to grow once more. A hulking grizzly bear is seen lumbering along a road near the East Entrance in 2005.

2007: good news for grizzlies

In 2016 – the year this breathtaking aerial shot of Yellowstone's Norris Geyser Basin was taken – the National Park Service celebrated its 100th birthday. Events marked the occasion up and down the country, including in Yellowstone, the oldest park in the system. Here, the landmark Roosevelt Arch was rededicated and the NPS Centennial Yellowstone Junior Ranger Program was a hit with kids.

Travel | What you need to know before you go to a national park this summer

bus tours yellowstone national park

The National Park Service has tightened access at the most popular of the 63 national parks to reduce crowding and traffic jams, which have become worse as visitor counts have soared.

A timed-entry reservation system has been put into effect, with the goal of spreading out visitation throughout the day, to avoid nightmare traffic jams and gruesomely long waits, officials said.

Sometimes timed entry tickets are required to get into historic homes, to board ferries or to drive specific roads, such as the Going-To-The-Sun Road in Glacier National Park. Each park has its own rules.

Here are the national parks and monuments requiring reservations at this writing, though you should really check the website to make sure there haven’t been any changes. (And note that some state parks and recreation areas have also jumped on the bandwagon. See details below.)

 • Acadia National Park, Maine
 • Adams National Historical Park, Massachusetts
 • Arches National Park, Utah
 • Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico
 • Ellis Island Part of Statue of Liberty National Monument, New York
 • Ford’s Theatre, Washington, DC
 • Fort Matanzas National Monument, Florida (Ferry ticket)
 • Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, Washington, DC
 • Gateway Arch National Park, Missouri
 • Glacier National Park, Montana (Going-to-the-Sun Road eastbound, the North Fork, and Many Glacier areas)
 • Haleakalā National Park, Maui, Hawaii (for sunrise viewing only)
 • Independence National Historical Park, Pennsylvania
 • Mount Rainier, Washington
 • Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial, Ohio (Memorial Deck only)
 • Redwood National and State Parks, California (required only for Gold Bluffs Beach and Fern Canyon)
 • Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
 • Sagamore Hill National Historic Site (Theodore Roosevelt House) New York
 • Statue Of Liberty National Monument, New York
 • Thomas Edison National Historical Park (To visit Edison home) New Jersey
 • Timpanogos Cave National Monument, Utah (Cave tour required)
 • Washington Monument, Washington, DC (elevator to the top. Some same-day passes available)
 • Yosemite National Park, California

Perhaps interestingly, you won’t need a reservation to visit Yellowstone National Park, at least not as of this writing.

Clouds hang below the summit of Haleakala volcano in Haleakala National Park on Hawaii's island of Maui, Monday, Jan. 23, 2017. Park officials say the sunrise on Haleakala attracts over a thousand people a day, resulting in an overload of visitors and creating a safety hazard. As a result, anyone wanting to see the sunrise on the summit will now be required to make reservations in advance and pay a small fee. (Photo by Caleb Jones, The Associated Press)

And, while we’re on the subject, note that you may need a special advance permit to visit certain overcrowded attractions, such as the popular Angels Landing hike at Zion National Park in Utah. You don’t need a timed ticket to get into Zion (although you do have to ride a shuttle bus), however if you want to make this popular hike, you’ll need a permit in advance.

In addition to your timed entry ticket, you’ll also need to pay the fee is for that particular park on arrival, or have a pass that enables you to enter free, such as a senior, military, disabled or 4th grader pass.

How to reserve a timed-entry National Park ticket

These are available in advance on the Recreation.gov website or mobile app. It’s a good idea to get one as soon as your plans are firm.

There will be a limited number of last minute timed-entry tickets made available at 6 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time on the night before. These will probably go quickly, so be ready.

Glacier National Park in Montana now requires reservations as a way of managing crowds. (AP Photo/Beth J. Harpaz)

How to book: Go to the Recreation.gov website or app (you must create an account) or call the reservation line at 877-444-6777. Reservations cannot be booked at park offices. It costs $2 to make a reservation. This is not refundable.

What about National Forest sites?

Yes, it’s true. We haven’t finished listing all the types of places you might need a reservation. At the most popular National Forest fun spots, expect to find that you’ll also need to book in advance. For example, at the Coconino National Forest in Arizona, the Fossil Creek Wild and Scenic River trails and waterfall require advance booking on Recreation.gov .

It’s not a bad idea to double check, so you don’t get shut out.

Reservations for state parks

And even some particularly popular state parks are now requiring advance reservations. You’re not getting in without one, so take heed. The downside is that you have to pay for the reservations. The upside is that you’ll be able to find a place to park.

Here are a few of the most popular:

Reservations cost $5 per person, plus $10 parking. They can be made up to 30 days in advance. (Make a reservation here: gostateparks.hawaii.gov )

 • Waiʻānapanapa State Park and its black sand beach along the Road to Hana in Maui.
 • Īao Valley State Monument, Maui
 • Diamond Head State Monument. Oahu
 • Hāʻena State Park, Kauai

Advance purchase day passes are not mandatory but parks do fill up, so these “Save The Day” passes are highly recommended. Texas has 84 state parks. Here are some of the most heavily visited. (Reserve here: tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/reservations or call 1-512-389-8900.)

 • Balmorhea State Park
 • Brazos Bend State Park
 • Cedar Hill State Park
 • Dinosaur Valley State Park
 • Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
 • Garner State Park
 • Inks Lake State Park
 • McKinney Falls State Park
 • Palo Duro Canyon State Park
 • Ray Roberts Lake State Park

Diamond Head is Oahu's most famous landmark. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Nevada requires $5 advance day use reservations only for the Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area . In Tennesee , only the Cummins Falls State Park requires a $6 access permit. So it goes without saying that if you’re planning to see a state park or national forest recreation area that you know is popular, it’s never a bad idea to find out if you need to book it in advance.
