Zakynthos Greece Travel Guide & How To Visit

The island of Zakynthos in Greece has become famous for its picturesque shipwreck beach , but there are also lots of other things to do and see on this scenic island in the Ionian Sea.

Zakynthos features steep limestone cliffs, white pebble beaches, and some of the bluest water you’ll ever see in your life. You can explore the sights on this island by boat or by land, and it’s relatively easy to get to Zakynthos from Athens.

To be fair, this island has become a very popular summer destination in Greece nowadays, so you won’t escape the tourists, but it’s still worth a visit for the bucket list sights and photo ops.

This travel blog will explain what to do in Zakynthos, how to get there, where to stay, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Best Zakynthos Tour Packages

The coastline of Zakynthos is full of sea caves, beaches, and other wonderful sights that can only be seen with a boat tour.

We recommend GetYourGuide for boat tours in Zakynthos! They have high rated tours for all of the best sights like Navagio Beach , Blue Caves, Turtle Island, and more. These tours usually include free hotel pickup and drop-off from most of the popular areas in Zakynthos.

We’ve used this company for lots of day tours and activities around the world, and they’re great! Highly recommended.

Where Is Zakynthos Island?

Zakynthos (also known as Zante) is an island located in the Ionian Sea, west of mainland Greece. The distance from Athens to Zakynthos is only about 240 kilometers (150 miles) as the plane flies.

There are a total of seven Ionian Islands in Greece, and Zakynthos is the most famous of these, but the other nearby islands like Kefalonia are also very scenic and worth a visit if you have time.

How To Get To Zakynthos Greece

Zakynthos island can be reached by flight or ferry.

Flying to Zakynthos is the easiest, fastest, and most expensive (but recommended) way to get there. The Zakynthos airport (ZTH) is served by daily nonstop flights from Athens, as well as some international cities like Amsterdam, Rome, and Warsaw.

The flight time to Zakynthos from Athens is 1 hour, and it costs anywhere from 50 to 100 Euros for a one way ticket with Aegean/Olympic Air or Sky Express.

The best airline to use is Aegean (or its subsidiary Olympic Air) instead of Sky Express if you have a choice, but any of them are fine. Free checked baggage is usually included in the ticket prices.

Taking the ferry to Zakynthos from Athens is cheaper than flying, but it’s slower and a bit more complicated.

You first have to take a 4 hour bus ride from Athens to Kyllini (which costs 25 Euros), and then hop on the ferry there. The boat ride from Kyllini to Zakynthos takes around 1 hour and costs about 12 Euros.

If you’re interested in doing some island hopping in Greece and you want to see more than just Zakynthos, you can also mix up the itinerary a bit.

For example, you can fly into Zakynthos for a few days, take the ferry to Kefalonia , and then fly from Kefalonia back to Athens. That’s what we did, and it worked out great!

Transport: How To Get Around On Zakynthos Island

Zakynthos town proper is small enough to be walkable by foot for restaurants and most other things, but if you want to do some exploring outside of town you’ll need transport.

The main way to get around on Zakynthos island is by renting a car or ATV (4 wheeler). There are many companies offering car rentals on the island, but we recommend DiscoverCars !

There’s also an affordable bus service offered by KTEL Zakynthos , although keep in mind some of the bus routes are seasonal (summer only). Their website has a full list of prices and routes on the island.

For short distance trips near town, you can walk to beaches, shops, and such places. There’s no Uber, but you can hire a taxi or book an airport transfer .

The limestone cliffs of Zakinthos island

Driving in Zakynthos is a little stressful, but not too hard, and most of the roads are in good condition. The west side of the island is more mountainous, so you’ll occasionally have steep roads with plenty of bends, but these are usually well paved.

A few remote roads on the west side of the island may still be gravel with occasional potholes, but even those roads are quickly improving as the island becomes more accessible and popular with travelers.

The main difficulty is driving in Zante town, where there’s more traffic and the roads are narrow, with lots of cars parked on both sides. Drive slowly in town and stay alert. Once you get out of town, the roads are smooth sailing for the most part.

Greeks drive on the right side of the road, similar to the US and Canada. The locals like to drive fast, and they frequently ignore speed limits and pass on double yellow lines. Just be aware of this, and move over to let them pass.

The bluest water in the world!

Since the law was changed in 2021, foreign tourists from Australia, Canada, UK and the United States do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Greece anymore.

The actual text of the new law (in Greek language) can be found in Law 4850, art. 25, par. η, page 10697 , and it’s also been confirmed by the U.S. Embassy in Greece .

With that said, it still doesn’t hurt to have an IDP for Zakynthos in case there’s confusion from the authorities or your local car rental company. Many people in Greece still seem to be unaware of this change.

The coastline of Zakynthos is stunningly beautiful, and many of the best sights on the island are worth touring by boat. You can rent a boat or join a shared tour at one of the many harbors on the island, or you can book tour packages online that include free hotel pickup and drop-off.

What To Do In Zakynthos Greece

• navagio viewpoint.

This famous shipwreck beach is what first put Zakynthos island on so many travelers’ bucket lists. It’s probably one of the most famous travel pictures in the world!

Navagio is a beautiful secluded beach surrounded by turquoise water and dramatic, winding cliffs. In the center of the beach sits a smuggler ship that ran aground during stormy weather in 1980.

If you’re mainly wanting to see the iconic postcard view and take photos of it, you can do that from a viewpoint on the cliffs high above the beach.

Navagio Viewpoint

You can drive to the Navagio viewpoint yourself, or book a tour package that includes the viewpoint along with several other sights in Zakynthos.

Keep in mind, it’s not possible to reach the beach itself from the viewpoint. There’s no path to go down to the beach, because the cliffs are too steep. The only way to walk on the beach is with a boat tour, and that’s explained below in more detail.

However, the viewpoint is still one of the best sights in Zakynthos, so you should definitely add it to your itinerary!

• Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon

This is a small monastery that you’ll pass on the way to the Navagio viewpoint. In fact, it’s just a 5 minute drive from the viewpoint!

The Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon was founded in the 16th century, and it’s still a functioning monastery, with monks living and working there. Remember to dress appropriately if you want to go inside, although plenty of nice pictures can be taken from outside.

It’s free to visit the monastery, and they have a little workshop where they make mosaics and other art. You can buy their wares if you want, but they aren’t pushy about it. The mosaics are very nice.

Behind the monastery, there’s a walking path that takes you to a cross with wonderful views of the Ionian Sea, and it’s also a great sunset spot.

• Navagio Beach

Even though the best pictures of Navagio shipwreck are actually taken from the steep cliffs above, it’s also fun to get in a boat and go see the beach at eye level, if you’re willing to brave the crowds.

Boat tours to Navagio Beach generally depart from the nearby harbor at Porto Vromi. You can show up there and try to arrange a boat rental on the spot, but it’s generally better to book a tour package online .

This beach gets very crowded and chaotic during the daytime, when it’s bombarded with tourists and boats. During the summer, the only time you can avoid the crowds at Navagio Beach is by arriving before 8 AM or after 6 PM.

Nevertheless, it’s still a very nice beach and the rusty shipwreck is fun to see up close!

• Hidden Treasure Cave (Maravelia)

Out of all the many wonderful caves in Zakynthos island, this was one of our favorites.

The Maravelia Cave, also known as Hidden Treasure Cave, is located on the coast near the shipwreck beach, and you can only get there by boat.

In fact, the cave is only big enough for one small boat to fit inside it at a time, and only private boat tours go to this spot. Shared tours skip it.

Maravelia Hidden Treasure Cave

To go inside the cave, you’ll have to step directly off of your boat and climb up the smooth rocks that meet the water’s edge near the cave entrance.

The rocks can be slippery from sea water, so watch your step! Hidden Treasure Cave has a high ceiling with an opening at the top that pours in sunlight and makes the whole cave amazingly beautiful and photogenic.

It may not be famous just yet, but this was one of our favorite hidden spots in Zakinthos!

• Myzithres Rocks

This is one of the most spectacular and underrated places in Zakynthos, with dramatic white rocks and private beaches on both sides of the rock.

The Myzithres rocks are located on the southwest corner of Zakynthos island, and you can view them from the cliffs above, or take a boat directly to them from Keri Harbor and land on the beach!

There’s a viewpoint and a restaurant on the cliffs above, called Keri Lighthouse Restaurant. It’s a little overpriced, although the views are unbeatable. Afternoon until sunset is the best time to dine there and take pictures.

You can also walk further up the road and enjoy the view of Myzithres rocks without any people, but be careful not to get too close to the edge, because the cliff may be unstable.

• Marathonisi Island

Also known as ‘turtle island,’ Marathonisi is a small island near the south coast of Zakynthos. Part of the island is a protected breeding ground for loggerhead sea turtles.

The front side of this island has a nice beach with clear water, and the south side has a couple of caves you can enter with a small boat. It’s a fantastic island, but it’s becoming pretty crowded.

You can visit Marathonisi Island on a half day tour from Keri Harbor along with other sights such as the Keri Caves (below), or it’s also possible to take a boat taxi there from nearby places like Laganas Beach.

The Keri Caves are usually visited on a half day boat tour that includes Marathonisi Island (above) and sometimes the Myzithres Rocks.

Inside these caves, the water seems to glow blue, giving it a gatorade-like color that almost doesn’t look real. It’s hard to capture with a camera. Small boats can float into the caves see them up close.

There are also several pebble beaches and two rock arches on this coastline that your boat captain can drive through if he’s feeling adventurous!

Overall, the Keri Caves were one of our favorite places in southern Zakynthos.

• Blue Caves

This is a group of small caves on the northern tip of Zakynthos island, reachable by boat from Agios Nikolaos harbor.

As you might guess from the name, these are some of the most colorful caves in Zakynthos, and little boats can pass through the caves and come out the other side. Usually you can do some swimming here too, if there’s enough time.

The Blue Caves tour is generally shorter than any of the other boat tours in Zakynthos, but it’s also cheaper, so it’s well worth it!

• Plakaki Beach

This viewpoint is still kind of a hidden gem in Zakynthos, with amazing views of the coastline and that dark blue water the Mediterranean Sea is famous for.

Calling it a beach is kind of a stretch, but at the bottom of the cliff there’s a nice swimming spot that can be reached with a bit of short, intense hiking. The path is still unfinished rock, and there are some steep sections, so it’s not good for kids or older folks.

When the access improves, I’m sure this place will be one of the highlights of Zakynthos island. It definitely has some of our favorite views.

Plakaki Viewpoint Drone

Plakaki Beach — rocky access, but stunning views!

• Potamitis Viewpoint

Potamitis is another viewpoint with a nice restaurant, a windmill, and easy access by road. It’s located on the north end of Zakynthos island.

There’s a photogenic winding staircase that takes you down to the seaside, where you can watch the tour boats coming and going from the nearby Blue Caves. It’s a really nice view, and there are also sunbeds if you want to stay and relax.

We had heard that the restaurant asks you to buy something before taking pictures at the viewpoint, but in our case they didn’t ask for anything. The restaurant has good ratings too, so I’m sure it’s worth a visit!

• Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa

This is a medieval church that sits at the top of Skopos mountain in southeast Zante, at an elevation of 543 meters (1,782 ft). Surrounding the church are the ruins of a monastery that is even older. It’s like a trip back in time.

To reach the church you can drive or hike, but the road is rough gravel all the way to the top of the mountain. We made it there in a rental car, but it wasn’t a very comfortable drive. If you hike, bring a hat and lots of water.

If you drive, it’s best to come from the northeast side, because apparently the road from Kalamaki is worse and requires a 4×4 vehicle.

The atmosphere at the monastery is quiet and special. If you come in the daytime, they open the doors to the main building for visitors, and the inside has nice frescoes and a guestbook.

There’s a good breeze and you have panoramic views of much of Zakynthos island, with Kefalonia visible in the distance. I’m sure it’s a great spot for sunset too, although we didn’t stay that late.

Behind the monastery, there’s a rocky summit you can climb for even better views of the whole area! The path for this climb starts on the southeast side of the rocks, and there’s a rope to help you go up.

All in all, this place is a true hidden gem in Zakinthos, and most people still don’t know about it!

• Pelagaki Beach

There are lots of beaches in Zakynthos, but this one stands out because of its snow white pebbles and nice clear water. It’s similar to some of the scenic beaches in Kefalonia Greece .

This is one of the quieter and less touristy beaches in Zakynthos, with no music or sunbeds, although it’s occasionally disrupted by noisy boats dropping off tourists, so that’s the only downside. At the top of the hill, there’s a small canteen selling food and drinks.

The beach itself is fantastic from above or below, and you can reach it in about 5 minutes by hiking down a steep dirt path. Even though it doesn’t have the easiest access, the beach is beautiful and well worth a visit!

Paralia Pelagaki Beach

• Korakonissi

This beach might be one of the most unusual locations in Zakynthos Greece.

Actually, it’s not really a beach, but more like a little rocky peninsula with a natural arch and some tide pools for swimming.

The path down to the water is rocky and a bit steep in places, so it’s not the greatest. You can go down in about 5 minutes. I wouldn’t recommend it for kids or older folks, but you can enjoy great views of Korakonissi without going all the way to the bottom.

Korakonissi

Korakonissi

There are three places to swim: in the tide pool to the right, in the open sea to the left, or inside the cave below the arch.

It’s a spectacular location, and climbing on the rocks gives you some different views of everything. The water inside the cave is incredibly blue.

Parking is limited here, so you’ll want to arrive early if possible. The road is a bit steep and turns into gravel near the end, so depending on your vehicle, you may need to park before you reach the bottom of the road.

There is a cafe in the parking lot with nice views and reasonable prices for Greek food. Enjoy!

Korakonissi Arch

Best Zakynthos Photo Spot

There are many beautiful photo spots in Zakynthos, but I think the winner would have to be the Navagio Viewpoint , followed by the Myzithres Rocks in second place. Third place for me might be Plakaki Beach.

If you only have time for two boat tours in Zakynthos, do Navagio and the Keri Caves. These are on opposite sides of the island, so you may need two separate days to do them, but we thought the tour at Keri Caves was even better than the Blue Caves! It’s also a longer tour, so you get more time to enjoy the scenery.

For drone pilots, it’s possible to take amazing photos on the west coast of Zakynthos island, which is all lined with steep limestone cliffs.

The locals in Greece aren’t strict about drones. EU regulations on drones aren’t really enforced here, and there are lots of quiet places to fly without disturbing anyone. If in doubt, just ask before you fly.

Best Zakynthos Beaches

To be honest, Zakynthos beaches generally aren’t as nice as the ones on say, Kefalonia island , and they’re very overrun with tourists during the summer months. For the best experience, you’ll want to arrive early and find a good parking spot before the crowds get there.

If you want sandy beaches in Zakynthos, check out Banana Beach, Porto Zorro, or Alykanas Beach. If you’re mainly wanting spectacular views, go to Porto Limnionas or Plakaki Beach. These aren’t sandy beaches, but the views are wonderful and they can still be great spots for swimming and sunbathing.

The famous Navagio Beach also has amazing views with nice sand and water, although it’s usually crowded with boats and people.

Here’s a Zakynthos island map you can use to plan your trip in Greece.

You can click the icons on this map to get more info and directions for each point of interest, but keep in mind some of the locations may be approximate.

Attractions to visit by land are marked in blue, while harbors (and nearby attractions to reach by sea) are marked in orange.

Best Sunset Spot In Zakynthos

Zakynthos island has a long west-facing coastline, so naturally there are lots of good sunset spots to enjoy.

One of the most popular places to watch the sunset is at the Navagio Viewpoint (above the beach), where you can use a wide panoramic photo to capture the beach together with the sunset.

For a more quiet sunset, our favorite spot was the cross at the Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon, which is also located near the shipwreck viewpoint.

To find the cross for sunset, walk along the short path behind the monastery until you’ve gone about 150 meters down the hill. It’s a really nice spot, and you’ll most likely have it all to yourself!

If you want dinner in Zakinthos with an epic sunset view to end the day, check out Aeras Taverna , Porto Schiza Restaurant , Cross Taverna , or the Keri Lighthouse Restaurant .

All of these restaurants and sunset spots are located on the west side of the island, so a bit of driving is required if you’re coming from town.

There are also some tours available that will take you to one of the good sunset spots in Zakynthos and handle all of the transportation for you.

What To Bring

Here are some packing suggestions for your trip to Zakynthos Greece.

Most of the items below can probably be found on the island in a pinch, but the quality of stuff you buy on the street won’t be guaranteed (personally, I’m not about to use a junky knockoff bag from a street vendor to protect my expensive camera gear).

It’s best to buy vetted products online!

  • Waterproof Bag: Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch: Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
  • Snorkeling Gear: Good for exploring the clear waters around Zakynthos, and sometimes you can even see turtles. Snorkels and masks can be borrowed or rented from the boat companies too, but if you plan to do multiple tours it’s better to bring your own gear.
  • Water Shoes: Save your feet some grief and wear water shoes! Many of the beaches in Zakynthos have rocky shorelines, so water shoes are very helpful for getting in and out of the water.

Other Zakynthos Tips

  • Credit Cards: You can pay by credit card for most hotels, restaurants, and other things in Zakynthos, but it’s still a good idea to carry cash (in Euros). Some smaller restaurants only take cash, or the card machines may go down. If you show up at the harbor and want to book a boat tour on the spot, then they’ll ask you to pay in cash. This is part of the advantage of booking tours online, that way you can pay by credit card and save your cash for those little family owned tavernas with top notch food and low prices.
  • ATM: There are ATMs within reach of every corner of the island. We usually pulled 200 Euros at a time, and never had any issues. One thing to note is that the ATMs will offer you their own conversion rate (which is a really bad rate), or you can continue in Euros. Make sure you choose Euros without their silly conversion rate. This is a well known scam at ATMs in Greece, but it’s easily avoided if you know what you’re doing.
  • Cell Service: Phone reception is strong across most of Zakinthos island, although you may lose service in some places while driving around because of the hilly terrain of the island.

Zakynthos Greece Island Travel Guide Zakinthos Zante Keri Caves Beach

The perfect place to go for a swim

  • WiFi: Internet quality in Zakynthos is not the greatest, but it’s improving, especially in the main town areas. Don’t expect WiFi speeds on par with Athens (or other European countries), but it’s generally good enough for emails, browsing, and maybe a little bit of streaming.
  • Language: The local language in Zakynthos is Greek, of course, but almost everyone speaks and understands enough English for conversation. Lots of UK tourists visit the Ionian islands, so the locals are accustomed to speaking English with travelers.
  • Mosquitoes: We had very few encounters with mosquitoes in Zakynthos, and the island isn’t known to be home to the West Nile Virus, so it’s not really a significant concern here.
  • Water: The tap water in Zakynthos is supposed to be safe to drink, but it doesn’t taste good. It’s better to drink bottled water, which is cheap and can be found at any mini market. You can use the tap water for cooking or brushing your teeth.

Is Zakynthos Safe?

Yes, Zakynthos is a very safe place to visit!

Greece has one of the lowest homicide rates in the world. Just take normal precautions and you shouldn’t have any issues with crime.

The locals in Zakynthos are very friendly, especially if you get out of the busy town and go to some of the quiet villages in the countryside.

Is Zakynthos Worth It?

If you still can’t make up your mind, then yes, Zakynthos is definitely worth it!

This is a beautiful Greek island with great food, people, and scenery. You can enjoy a sunset dinner by the cliffs, or explore a sea cave by boat. Famous bucket list views like Navagio Beach are also icing on the cake.

In spite of the summer tourist crowds, Zakynthos is undoubtedly one of the quintessential Greek islands in my opinion. It’s also fairly easy to reach from Athens, and the infrastructure is improving every day.

How Long To Stay

There are loads of good things to do in Zakynthos. The best highlights will take at least 3 days to see, but one week is more ideal.

We spent two weeks in Zakynthos, and easily could have found more activities to do if we had stayed longer.

Zakynthos Itinerary

Here’s what a sample 4-day itinerary for Zakinthos island could look like, assuming you’ve rented a car :

  • Day 1: Northwest Zakynthos . Visit the Navagio Beach viewpoint and see the famous shipwreck from above. Make a quick stop at the nearby monastery, and then drive to Porto Vromi, where you can take a boat to the shipwreck beach and also tour some of the nearby caves. Relax at Porto Limnionas Beach or Korakonissi, and then have dinner at San Leon Tavern or one of the other great restaurants in the area.
  • Day 2: North Zakynthos . Drive to Agios Nikolaos Harbor and rent a boat to go to the Blue Caves for scenery and swimming. Next, drive to the Potamitis Viewpoint and walk down the stairs by the ocean. Lastly, relax at Pelagaki Beach or Xigia Sulfur Beach.
  • Day 3: Southwest Zakynthos . Drive to Keri Lake Harbor, and then rent a boat to go to Marathonisi Island, Keri Caves, and Myzithres Beach. Next, drive to Plakaki Viewpoint and hike down to the beach (if you’re fit and able). Lastly, go see the Myzithres Rocks from above and enjoy the sunset at Keri Lighthouse Restaurant.
  • Day 4: East Zakynthos . If you’re feeling adventurous, hike or drive up the steep gravel road to Monastery Panagia Skopiotissa, and enjoy the historic buildings and panoramic views of Zakynthos island. Bring plenty of water. Afterwards, relax at Banana Beach, Porto Zorro, or one of the many other beaches in the area. If you have extra time, check out the Cameo Island Beach Bar.

I hope this sample itinerary gives you some ideas for your own trip to Zakynthos! As always, feel free to ask any questions if you have them.

Zakynthos Hotels

Best time to visit zakynthos greece.

The best time to visit Zakinthos island depends on what you’re looking for, but generally the nicest weather is from early May to late October. All of these months are mostly warm and sunny. The shoulder months in spring and autumn can be nice if you’re wanting good weather without the crowds.

The hottest months in Greece are July and August, and Zakynthos during this time has temperatures of up to 32 °C (91 °F) during the day time, and lows of 21 °C (70 °F). This can be great for swimming in a pool or lounging at the beach, although these two months can also be a a lot more busy with tourists.

Winter in Zakynthos is fairly mild, but it’s wetter, cooler, and more overcast. High temperatures are around 14 °C (57 °F), and lows are around 8 °C (46 °F). Not as many boats and tours are running at this time, but you may get a good deal on hotels and things.

Regardless of when you decide to visit Zante, you’re sure to have a memorable trip!

Do you need to rent a car to get around on this island?

' src=

Hi. A car isn’t required if you stay near town, but it can still be nice for exploring other parts of the island. We used DiscoverCars in Greece and would recommend them. The other option for getting around is to book day tours that include transport. There are shared and private tours that go to many of the best places on the island.

' src=

What are the other ways to get around the island if you don’t have a car? Does the island have buses?

Hi.

This Underrated Greek Island Has an Adorable Town, Incredible Food, and a Famous Shipwreck Beach — How to Visit

Here’s the ultimate guide to Zakynthos, the Ionian wonder famed for its picture-perfect Shipwreck Beach.

tip travel zakynthos

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, areas to visit, how to get around.

SCStock/Getty Images

Instantly recognizable by its astounding luminous turquoise seas enclosed within soaring craggy bluffs, Greece’s Insta-famous Shipwreck Beach is Zakynthos’ claim to global fame. An unwavering favorite among Travel + Leisure readers, the beach, known in Greece as Navagio, frequently tops best beach lists .

Situated off the Mediterranean country’s western mainland, Zakynthos is a member of the Ionian island group, a dreamy blend of blues and greens. The seas that wash Zakynthos and its neighbors range in hue from pale aqua to teal, while the landscapes are cloaked in olive trees, numbering an estimated two million, along with pine trees, citrus orchards, and rare flowers like sea daffodils. Bougainvillea and jasmine bring vivid color and aroma to the isle which its former Venetian rulers named Fior di Levante (the flower of the East).

While Zakynthos has long been known, particularly among young British holidaymakers, as a wild party isle, many locals have worked hard over the years to shrug off this reputation. Most bars that give the island this name are limited to the southern beach town of Laganas. So, you may want to avoid this part of the island altogether.

Most visitors to Zakynthos are drawn to its diverse beaches — some sandy, others lined in fine pebbles or rocky, and caves ideal for snorkeling. The island is unique because it hosts the most important nesting ground for the endangered Mediterranean loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). In fact, the National Marine Park of Zakynthos was established in 1999 to safeguard this delicate habitat, particularly on beaches in the south, as well as other wildlife, including the Mediterranean monk seal. Rubys Sakis Kandilas, CEO of Explore Zakynthos and a licensed tour guide, told T+L that environmental organization volunteers work diligently to raise awareness among locals and visitors of the need to safeguard turtle nest locations.

Beyond its natural attractions, Zakynthos is evolving into an enticing culinary destination, according to Sophia Kladis, manager of Windmill Bay Hotel . From traditional family-owned tavernas sourcing organic produce from their own farm to upscale seaside restaurants reinventing recipes with deep-seated Venetian roots, there is plenty to keep foodies curious.

Rounding out the experience, Zakynthians make for the utmost hosts, going out of their way to ensure you savor every minute on this wondrous isle.

Longing to lounge on Zakynthos' fine beaches? Here’s how to plan an unforgettable vacation on the island.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Capture the surreal beauty of Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach — known worldwide as one of the most beautiful in the country.
  • Swim in the Blue Caves and remote coves via a skippered charter or self-drive around the island.
  • Explore Zakynthos town.
  • Take a boat tour to the north or south to spot sea turtles and see coves only accessible via water.
  • Dine at an electricity-free taverna on Dafni Beach, where family-run restaurants serve fresh local food.

Olea All-Suite Hotel

A fluid free-form pool connects the 93 rooms at the minimalist, adult-focused, five-star Olea All-Suite Hotel , ensconced amid silvery olive and carob trees on a hillside in Tsilivi facing the Ionian. Organic materials such as bamboo, rattan, and oak grace the soothing indoor-outdoor living spaces that merge effortlessly. Set aside plenty of time for spa treatments featuring Babor products.

Lesante Cape

Situated in Akrotiri, this upscale seafront resort echoes classic Zakynthian architecture in the form of stone-built arches framed with white bands and terracotta-tiled rooftops. Suited to families and couples alike, Lesante Cape features 55 rooms and 10 villas dressed in neutral hues, infinity pools, five restaurants sourcing ingredients from an organic garden, a spa, and even a cultural museum showcasing the island’s heritage.

Domes Aulūs Zante

This all-inclusive five-star hotel, equally accommodating of families and couples, sits at the edge of a pine forest that opens to a sandy beachfront. Conscious of its location in Kalamaki, at a nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles, guests of Domes Aulūs Zante are encouraged to contribute to local sustainability initiatives.

See Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach

You’ll never forget the first time you saw Shipwreck Beach, known as Navagio in Greek. A rusty shipwreck, now split in half, lies half-submerged in bright white sand surrounded by vertical cliffs and washed by luminous cyan seas. The views are equally awe-inspiring, whether you peer down from the top, stay within the confines of a safety platform, or take in the views from the sea. While landslides in recent years have closed off the beach to visitors, you can reach the bay by boat and swim offshore at a safe distance.

Reach Secret Beaches by Boat

Boat tours ply the northern and southern coasts and offer the opportunity to swim and snorkel in translucent waters. Those headed north pause at Shipwreck Beach and the Blue Caves and stop at secluded coves accessible only by sea. Those heading south visit Marathonisi (Turtle Island) in Laganas Bay, picturesque Cameo Island, and the Keri Caves. Those lucky enough may catch a glimpse of a sea turtle. Kladis recommends choosing one itinerary or spreading it over two days rather than a full-day island circumnavigation, which can be tiring. Alternatively, rent a self-drive boat or hire a skippered motorboat .

Visit the Turtle Rescue Center

At Zakynthos’ southeastern tip, you’ll find Gerakas Beach, one of the island’s most important nesting sites for loggerhead sea turtles ( Caretta caretta ). There, you can visit the Zante Sea Turtle Rescue & Information Center , open May to October free of charge, and learn more about the endangered mammal and how to reduce your impact on their life cycle and habitat. Most importantly, you’ll find out what you should do if you see a turtle in the sea or hatchlings leaving their nest.

Courtesy of Nobelos

In Agios Nikolaos, on the northeast coast, yachties drop anchor at family-owned Nobelos , at the edge of a pine forest. Spend a day lounging on sunbeds on a petite, sandy beach, then relish stellar sea-to-fork fish, seafood, and firmly traditional Greek fare in stylish yet welcoming surroundings. Produce is sourced from the owners’ organic farm, and fish are transported via wooden caique. Bookings are recommended.

Located beside Solomos Square in Zakynthos Town, Prosilio is the island’s definitive fine dining destination. Talented young chef Kristy Karageorgou crafts whimsical dishes with distinctive Zakynthian ingredients that look almost too good to eat. Try the cuttlefish ravioli stuffed with sauteed greens (tsigareli), langoustine, and kourkoutzelia, an edible violet wildflower, or the signature pork ragu with local tavla cheese foam.

Ampelostrates

In the south, head inland to Ampelostrates in Kiliomenos village for wholesome Zakynthian dishes in an atmospheric stone-built farmhouse-turned-mezedopolio amid grape vines, lemon trees, and wandering chickens. “It’s traditional but quirky. The type of place where the owner will serve a wine they produced this year,” said Kladis. “They make pies with wild greens and kouneli ladorigano (rabbit with olive oil and oregano), one of their special dishes.”

On Dafni Beach, which falls within marine park boundaries, family-run old-school tavernas like Porto Mela are run on generators as electricity isn’t permitted. Kandilas recommends the in-house bread baked in a wood-fired oven and served with olive oil from the owner’s grove, tomato, and garlic. Stifado, a hearty rabbit stew made with onions, and ladotiri, a slightly spicy native cheese made with sheep and goat milk and matured in local olive oil, is a must-try, he added.

Right on the port in Zakynthos Town, Varkarola is not simply a taverna beloved of locals and visitors alike but “one of the last remaining families keeping Zakynthos’ Venetian kantada (serenade) tradition alive,” Kandilas said. Immerse yourself in the heartfelt song, accompanied by mandolin and acoustic guitar, as you dine on house specials, veal sofrito, and slow-roasted beer-marinated pork shank.

Maremagnum/Getty Images

Zakynthos’ warm-weather season runs from April to October, with July and August proving the busiest and hottest months of the year. In August, boat trips, restaurants, and even sun loungers on the beach need to be booked ahead, Kladis said. Toward the end of the month, a feast day celebrating the island’s patron saint can cause traffic jams on the roads leading into Zakynthos Town. Kladis recommended visiting in early June or in September. “It’s not over-crowded, it’s still warm, and there are just enough people to bring the island to life,” said Kladis. “You can see and experience everything you’d like to without having to book a week in advance.”

The quickest way to reach Zakynthos is by plane. Flights from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) to the island take about 60 minutes and operate daily. From the mainland, ferries depart from Kyllini port in the northwestern Peloponnese four times a day in summer and take one hour and 15 minutes. Zakynthos features on cruise line itineraries, including those of Atlas Ocean Voyages, Norwegian, and Azamara.

Zakynthos Town

Spend a day in the capital, Zakynthos Town. “Start at Zakynthos port, where you can see yachts in the harbor,” Kandilas said. Marvel at the grandeur of Agios Dionysios Church and its bell tower. Dedicated to the island’s patron saint, its Catholic architectural style contrasts with the Orthodox domed style. “Then head to Solomos Square to view the statue of poet Dionysios Solomos, who composed Greece’s national anthem. On Agios Markos Square, visit the museum dedicated to him and other eminent Zakynthians,” Kandilas said. Pore over portraits, photographs, and period furniture. Also, head to the Venetian castle ruins atop Bohali Hill for panoramic sea views.

Northern Zakynthos

Kladis recommended venturing to the island’s north by car or boat. “There are some villas and houses and a few traditional preserved buildings, but, mostly, it’s very natural,” she said. “The beaches are rockier than in the south, and the waters are deep and blue. It’s just so calming and picturesque.”

Southern Zakynthos

Heading south, you’ll encounter warmer seas and sandy beaches that shelve gradually, making them more kid-friendly. Vassilikos is home to some of the island’s best beaches, according to Kandilas. Sweeping Laganas Bay, a popular swim spot, forms part of the strictly-regulated National Marine Park of Zakynthos . This protected area is home to over 300 fauna species, including loggerhead sea turtles and Mediterranean monk seals, and more than 170 types of marine flora.

Heading inland from the southeastern seaside resort of Argassi, an essential lookout during Venetian rule, you’ll find one of Zakynthos’ two domed churches. Stroll around the ruins of the 15th-century stone-built Panagia Skopiotissa Monastery built on an ancient temple dedicated to goddess Artemis and take in Ionian views from atop Skopos mountain. Closer to the town is the 16th-century Domeneghini Tower , which is closely associated with Greece’s 1821 War of Independence.

pidjoe/Getty Images

By Rental Car: Book a rental car in advance, particularly if visiting during summer. “It’s safest to travel by car. In summer, it’s hot, and distances are long, so you want to be comfortable,” said Kandilas.

By Taxi: Between May and October, silver taxis operate 24 hours a day on the island. Cab ranks operate at the airport, Zakynthos Town, and the port and in popular resort areas on the eastern and southern coasts. They may cost more if booked in advance or via a hotel. There are fixed fares for numerous routes. It costs around 15 euros to reach Zakynthos Town from the airport.

tip travel zakynthos

If anyone asks me where is the most impressive of the places I’ve been visited, I absolutely say without hesitation it is the island of Zakynthos. Personally, I prefer this island than Santorini or other famous destinations. Surrounded by clear blue water, gently stretching white sand beaches, majestic cliffs standing in front of the sea, Zakynthos has long been known by tourists with famous attractions such as Navagio Shipwreck Beach, Cape of Keri, Blue Cave… So, what to do and how to plan a perfect budget trip to Zakynthos island (Zakynthos Greece)for the first-time? Referring Greece tourism, many of you often think of and often choose two popular destinations: Santorini and Athens. But indeed, if you miss this island, you will feel very regret. The wonderful feeling of driving on the pass roads with one side is spectacular cliffs and the other side is stretching white sand beaches. Wow, it can be said this is the paradise island on earth with breathtaking scenes of the sea, forests and mountains. And I also affirm that the sea here is very beautiful. I’m not a fan of swimming (I don’t know how to swim, LOL) but actually came here once and I just want to come back again. Therefore, it is not surprising that the airport on Zakynthos Island has directly connected flights with many other cities in the world and its airport is also much bigger, better than Santorini airport.

tip travel zakynthos

If Santorini has only 2 famous tourist places with many hotels and restaurants are Oia and Fira village, Zakynthos Island has at least 4, 5 such places. I have been driving around the island and found that there are many stunning beaches here. You can not swimming in all these beaches, but I will suggest the most prominent beaches you should not miss when traveling to Zakynthos Island.

Zakynthos travel blog: Overview of Zakynthos Greece

The island of Zakynthos or more commonly called Zante also has another name as “Flower of the Orient” – “Il fioro di Levante” was named by the Venetians who once ruled this island. Due to its geographical location near an important sea waterway, so in the past the island was continuously occupied by many armies: Bizantine, Ottoman, Venice, France, England … Currently in the town center of Zakynthos, the island’s capital still exists many structures and architecture which were influenced by Venice style.

tip travel zakynthos

In the Bronze Age, Zakynthos was a supplier of raw materials for the metallurgy industry of the neighboring islands. During the early of the Middle Ages, Zakynthos was under the rule of Marco Sanudo, The ruler of Venice along with other islands such as Naxos and Paros. The island’s economy has relied heavily on fishing and livestock throughout the years. Today due to located near Athens, it has a lot of housing and attracts foreign tourists.

Zakynthos travel blog: When is the best time to visit Zakynthos island?

Like some other countries in the Mediterranean, Greece has a characteristic warm sunshine climate and is favored by nature with the advantage of beautiful weather all year round. You can go to the island of Zakynthos or other regions of Greece at any time of the year.

tip travel zakynthos

However, it is advisable to go from April to October because from November to March next year is winter and often rainy. You should also consider whether to go in July or August or not because this is the peak tourist season, visitors flock to Greece very crowded and prices are also quite high compared to low season.

Zakynthos travel guide: How to get to Zakynthos Island?

Getting from athens to zakynthos.

From Athens airport, you can take a flight to the island of Zakynthos for about 45 minutes of flying. There are 3 flights a day during the peak season. Ticket price ranging from EUR45 to EUR90 / one way. You should find tickets in advance on Skyscanner or Google Flights , Kayak to compare prices and make schedule. Usually, the early morning and night flights are always cheaper than usual. I booked ticket before the departure date just 1 day, the ticket price was EUR50.

tip travel zakynthos

Bus + Ferry

You must take both of these means of transportation if you want to getting from Athens to Zakynthos. First, you will first take a bus from downtown Athens to Kyllini town, then from Kyllini, you will take a ferry of Levante Ferries company to the island of Zakynthos with traveling time for 1 hour 15 minutes. This option usually takes about 6 hours of traveling because there are only 2 bus trips a day and each trip takes about 4 to 5 hours. And the total fare for one-way to Zakynthos for both vehicles above will cost around 40 euros (in the peak season). Refer bus from Athens to Kyllini port here .

Levante Ferries

For more information, you can visit this website on how to travel by ferry from Athens to Zakynthos . However, the information on this website is not very clear and viewers are easily misunderstood (like me). When I first looked for information for traveling, I saw I could take a bus or plane. After checking the fare on this website, the bus fare is EUR28,6 / one-way and traveling time about 4, 5 hours. Fortunately, I did not choose to combine bus + ferry option. After coming Zakynthos and talking with many local people, they said we had to take a ferry for 1.5 hours (EUR12) to get to the port town of Kyllini, after that you can take the bus from here to Athens, so the total cost will be EUR40 €.

tip travel zakynthos

Summary, there are two ways to getting to from Athens to Zakynthos:

1. Airplane: Flight time 45 minutes and the airfare from EUR45 – EUR90 / one-way (you can choose 1 of 3 flights a day). To getting from the airport to town center you can take Zakynthos airport bus here .

2. Bus + Ferry: Traveling time takes about 6 hours and the fare EUR40 / one-way (bus EUR28,6 and 4 – 5 hours of traveling and ferry for EUR12 with ferry traveling time about 1,5 hours).

tip travel zakynthos

So in my opinion, before you go, you should carefully compare the prices of the two options above and decide the way you will go. The day I went, the bus + ferry fare was EUR40 while if take the flight (Skyscanner), it was only EUR50, so I decided to fly for good.

Zakynthos travel guide: Getting around Zakynthos island

tip travel zakynthos

Regarding getting around Zakynthos, I recommend you to rent a car or motorbike. The rental prices vary depending on the season. I traveled in August is the peak month when a car rental costs EUR80 – EUR120 per day including gasoline (in low season it costs around EUR40). As regards the price of renting a motorbike, I do not clear. You can book a rental online in advance and then pick up it after arriving or rent a car at some rental shops right at the airport. There are about 6, 7 different shops, only a few tens of meters when you exit the airport gate, you will see a lot of signs.

I also went for a round to checking price and service and chose SIXT , right across from the airport. I was extremely satisfied with this agent because the staff is very cute, polite and affordable compared to the neighboring agents. If you deposit EUR800 in advance, then it costs EUR80 for 1 day rental, if you deposit by credit card, the price is the same, but the money in account will be deducted and usually 2 weeks after the deposit date, it will be returned to your account. If you do not want to deposit too much, only about EUR200 – EUR300, the rental fee will increase to about EUR30 per day. This is optional for each visitor but I think you should bring a lot of euros not only to spend during your trip but also to deposit in these cases.

tip travel zakynthos

If you want to rent a motorbike, you should go to the center to rent or rent right near the hotel for convenience. (In fact, there is no rental motorbike shop at the airport). But I am not sure if they will accept a Vietnamese driver’s license. In general, it depends on each shop, some easy, some difficult. But usually, the rental in center is always hot and runs out of motorbikes quickly compared to rent a motorbike in tourist places.

tip travel zakynthos

Single bus ticket costs EUR1.3. Tickets can be used only once. Link to see more about bus schedules and bus fares in Zakynthos here .

There is a small note that almost visitor who comes here is easily confused as there is only one bus route from the airport to the center of Zakynthos (Zante). Then there are more buses from the center to the surrounding areas, so if you do not stay in the center of Zante, you still have to take 2 bus trips to get to your hotel. In addition, on the timetable of bus routes, often writes “ from Zakynthos to “… It means that it is from the central bus station to other locations.

tip travel zakynthos

In addition, the bus in Zakynthos is extremely not punctual, often too late or too early, very erratic. Even if for the trip from the center to the airport, the driver may departs from 10 to 15 minutes early if he want and because this is a small island, the population is not crowded, so you usually wait about 45 minutes to 1 hour to catch a bus trip to other tourist attractions from the center. In my opinion, traveling by bus is very inconvenient.

I recommend you renting a car or motorbike because it is convenient, take the initiative in time and terrain in Zakinthos has a lot of passes. The distance between tourist places is quite far, for example from the Blue Cave to islands to watching turtles is about 45-50km. There is also no bus to those locations.

tip travel zakynthos

Conclusion: Take a bus in Zakynthos costs EUR1.3/trip or rent a motorbike or car. In my opinion, the most convenient way to travel and saving money that you should rent a car or motorbike only for 1 day to travel to locations as far away as Shipwreck Beach or turtle island. 1 day you spend for boat tour, so you do not need to rent a car. I think 2 days is enough to explore this beautiful island.

Zakynthos blog: Where to stay in Zakynthos Greece?

On the east and south coasts of the island concentrating many budget hostels, family accommodations with reasonable prices while in the north of the town focuses on many upscale hotels and high-end resorts.

In my opinion, you do not need to stay in the center of Zakynthos town because there is really nothing special here besides its port and you will definitely have to come here without spending money if you book cruise tours to explore Blue Cave and Shipwreck Beach. In every hot tourist place has a lot of hotels and restaurants. However, I highly recommend you choose place to stay from the hilltop village of Ano Gerakari and downward, quite far above (the north of the island) and rare local people, as remote as the remote areas in Vietnam.

tip travel zakynthos

During my visit, I stayed in Airbnb in Argassi village for EUR40/night. I’m not mention its name here because I think it is not a great place to stay to recommend you, although it owns a very good location with many surrounding restaurants. But the room is not good at all. The 3-bed room has the mattress as hard as stone, so I could not sleep at night. Here the sea is not very beautiful but very convenient with many shops, cafes, restaurants, also very bustling and offers all kinds of things you need. The downside is driving up to Navagio Shipwreck Beach and Blue Cave a bit far. Because you have to driving through many steep passes, it will take you 1.5 hours to driving from Argassi to Navagio Shipwreck Beach. In return, it’s quite close the airport (8km), the center (6km) and the tourist attractions in the south such as turtle island of Marathonisi, Kalamaki, Laganas beaches…

Some good hotels I have found which you can refer to. During my travel, all of these accommodations were full:

  • Costas Studio: Located right in the heart of Argassi for EUR60 / double room / night. ( Agoda.com or Booking.com )

Zakynthos travel blog: What and where to eat in Zakynthos island?

Like other Greek cities, Zakynthos focuses mainly on Italian or Greek restaurants. Traditional dishes usually include Kebab, Gyros, rabbit meat, cheese, seafood… The food is also delicious. The price of a single serving part at a restaurant will be between EUR7 – EUR12. A large hot plate of pasta is only around EUR8. If you want to eat cheaper, try gyros (it is prepared most often with pork or chicken, whilst beef, chicken, or lamb are wrapped in flatbread, adding some vegetables such as tamato, avocado, onion, mayones sauce and chips). The price is about EUR3 / part.

| cyprus travel blog

If you stay in Lagan, there are many cheap dishes to choose from. A quick walk down the street you will find souvlaki (Greek skewers including small pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables grilled on a skewer) and pizza.

Greek Souvlaki

For a more authentic Greek culinary experience, you should head to Ionio Restaurant & Beach Bar (Address: Vasilikos 291 00, Greece) in Vasilikos to enjoy a dinner at sunset. From the view to the menu are all extremely attractive. Appetizers, Greek salads, bruschetta (grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with olive oil and salt), fried zucchini, and a small bottle of Ouzo (Greek traditional drink which is made from anise-flavored liquor produced from grape must (the remnants of wine-making)). There are also octopus, sardines, anchovies, squid, … that make you tired of eating.

tip travel zakynthos

Regarding supermarket, Lidl will be the first choice. There is only one Lidl supermarket on the island. This supermarket is about 2km from the airport but there is no bus to there. Here the prices are reasonable, much cheaper than the shops in tourist destinations. Fruits, drinks, ice cream … even half the price compared to shops at tourist places. Price is around EUR1 – EUR2.

Nightlife in tourist spots is extremely vibrant. The bars open until 3am – 4am. Besides, the grocery stores sell all kinds of items you need for swimming such as slippers, hats, sunscreen, swimsuits, swimming floats. Souvenirs are also very diverse and beautiful. The prices are quite cheap, for example refrigerator stickers cost about EUR1/piece, bracelet, watch from EUR3 – EUR10, large towel from EUR5… One special thing here is that very few Asian tourists compared to other places I’ve been to, but westerners are extremely crowded. I saw there were more westerners than Santorini.

The most famous and also the most popular tourist attraction of the island is Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach), a beautiful cove surrounded by spectacular vertical cliffs. Originally, this beach was known as Agios Georgios. Later, it was renamed Navagio, which in Greek means “shipwreck”. The reason Navagio was given this strange name is because in 1983, on a stormy night, the cargo ship MV Panagiotis was washed up and stranded on this beach. It is rumored that this is a smuggling vessel carrying prohibited items such as cigarettes, smuggled alcohol and even women. The ship was left to rust on the beach, since then the bay has been known as the Smugglers Cove.

Here, you can immerse yourself in turquoise water, sunbathe on the sand or participate in adventure activities such as rock climbing, windsurfing…

Some notes when exploring this beach:

  • Bring your water as it is very hot and there is no shadow on the top of the cliffs.
  • Wear sports shoes for easy hiking.
  • Always ensure safety when swimming and sightseeing, do not go inside the shipwreck.

After visit Navagio, it takes another 30 minutes to reach the Blue Caves (Blue Grottos) located in the North-West coast of the island of Zakynthos. A series of geological activities has created natural arches right above the sea, mixed with the colors of the blue sea to creating a wonderful natural beauty that cannot be described, the rising sun is higher, the cave is more beautiful. The cave reach ist most beautiful when the sun is at its highest. The blue color of water reflects itself on the ceiling of the cave. That is why locals call them are blue caves. In which, Kianoun is the largest cave. To get there you can rent a boat or book a boat tour.

Mizithres Viewpoint

This place is pristine and quite difficult to find, you can look up on Google Maps. Crossing the dirt and rocky road, park your car at the bottom and trekking up the rest of the walking path, the road is pretty easy to walk and cool. When you reach the Mizithres viewpoint, there will be no signs, it is also atop of cliff, so be careful while watching the scenery. Below there is a beach formed by a landslide during an earthquake.

tip travel zakynthos

You can rent a private boat to sailing around the turtle island of Marathonisi and southern caves in a day in Zakynthos. You can rent a boat from some different spots on the island, like at the Keri beach. Start looking for unseen turtles in the bay, sunbathe and snorkel, then continue floating on the sea. If you want the best view, go to the area near the Keri Caves with impressively steep limestone cliffs, the water below is crystal clear and perfect for swimming.

tip travel zakynthos

Marathonisi (Turtle Island)

This is an islet in Laganas Bay, about 1 mile from the center of Zakynthos Island and is in the marine ecosystem of the country that needs to be protected because there are many turtles and they often lay eggs here. To get here, you go to Laganas Beach and book a boat tour (costing EUR10 – EUR20 for 3-4 hours).

The tour will take you to the sea to watching turtles and then visit some prominent caves like Blue Caves above (but not as beautiful as blue caves) and then getting to the island to bathe. The sea here is also nice and clear. You can stay here for as long as you want because there are often boats that carry visitors come and go, so you can return at any time.

Gerakas Beach

On the island of Zakynthos, there are countless beaches such as Argassi, Tsiviili, Kalamaki, Laganas, Xigia… Because it is also the first-time I come here, I saw almost beaches have good reviews, so I visited almost them, but perhaps the beach I like the most is Gerakas Beach (18km from the center of Zakynthos). This beach defeats out all the beaches I’ve been to in Vietnam or other countries. It must be said that it is extremely beautiful with gentle waves, crystal water, smooth sand and also a place to be protected in the national oceanographic ecosystem.

tip travel zakynthos

Before exploring the beach, staff will give you a guide with regard to the terms of should and not to do, for example not throw out garbage, no swimming after sunset… There is also a rental service for umbrellas and sunloungers, price about 8-10 euros for 2 sunloungers and 1 umbrella. This beach is not too noisy and does not have too many restaurants and hotels like other beaches.

Xigia Beach

This beach is about 9km from the center of the island of Zakynthos. Following the coastal road from the center, you will see it. It is surrounded by a lot of cliffs. The short coastline with a bend part like Shipwreck beach, clear water. However, it smells a bit because this is where there are a lot of sulfur used as raw materials for cosmetics. There also is a vinyard with sweet and juicy fruits, they grow naturally without any care, but its fruit is as sweet as sugar. You notice when going down from the path where the stairs, it is right there.

tip travel zakynthos

Laganas Beach

The laganas sea is also quite clean and clear, from here you can take a boat to turtle island. Here, there is a strange thing than the other beaches is that there is a bridge like in the picture above spanning to a small rock. You just take pictures here, no need to swimming. After stop by, you will getting to the turtle island to take a bath there.

tip travel zakynthos

There are also some other beaches on the island of Zakynthos such as Tsilivi, Argassi, Kalamaki… but I saw these are rocky beaches, the water is not very clean, many restaurants and resorts surround them, so they quite crowded, hustle and bustle.

Filipoi Beach

This beach is just a 10-minute drive from Shipwreck Beach, on the way you will passing through a cute little town called Volimes, then down a windswept cliff to reach this rocky bay. You should come early in the morning around 8am or from 5pm onwards because it’s completely deserted, freely to explore, swim and take pictures with nature.

tip travel zakynthos

Porto Limnionas Beach

Another must-see place in Zante is the Porto Limnionas Beach. It is located on the west coast of the island and takes about 30 minutes by car from Laganas. It looks quite like a miniature lake surrounded by cliffs, but the water is exceptionally clear and not too deep. A private place to relax, immerse yourself in cool water without crowd and noise.

tip travel zakynthos

Korakonissi Beach

Korakonissi is one of the Greek beaches that possesses mysterious beauty. Surrounded by two cliffs leading to the sea, you can jump into the bay and perform beautiful acrobatics, sunbathing on the rocks. The turquoise water glowed in the sunlight, so once discovered it quickly became one of the most popular photography spots.

tip travel zakynthos

Water sports in St. Nicholas Beach

If you’re traveling with kids or just simply want a fun day in the sun, then you definitely won’t be able to miss water sports on your itinerary. St. Nicholas Beach located in Vasilikos village offers many watersports such as: Surfing, canoeing, diving, banana boat ride, parasailing, jet skiing, water skiing… The beach also has a few restaurants, bars and sun loungers for rent, so if you don’t want participate in water activities, grab a drink and relax on the smooth sand.

tip travel zakynthos

Cape of Keri

In the south of the island of Zakynthos there is a place called Keri Cape, visitors coming here will admire the beauty inside the two caves Damianos and Marithi. In addition, Keri also owns many rocky outcrops and coasts with fascinating “virtual living” corners.

tip travel zakynthos

In addition to the attractive attractions, the Zante grapes and roses here are also reasons to attract visitors from afar to set foot in the island. The island’s specialty includes olives and Zante currant you can buy as gifts. Besides, you also can buy a few ceramic items as souvenirs.

tip travel zakynthos

In short, if you plan a trip to Zakynthos Island, you will need at least 2 days. One day to explore Navagio beach from above or go to the beaches far from your hotel. Another day you can take a boat tour to bathe at Navagio beach and then walk around the center of Zakynthos town. If you stay longer, you can buy tours to the nearby small islands, also wonderful.

7 Things to Know Before You Visit Zakynthos, Greece

7 Things to Know Before You Visit Zakynthos, Greece

If you are the type of person that Google searches for everything before visiting a foreign country, then I strongly suggest that you go ahead and type “ best beaches in Greece ” on your search engine.

I bet all my money that you will not manage to find even one article which has omitted the Shipwreck (also called Navagio) beach. And that’s why Zakynthos is a worldwide famous island, aside from its incredible Ionian views and sea.

Of course, Zakynthos is also known for limitless partying among British teens, and a large number of visitors choose to visit for this reason and only.

That said, whether you’re looking for a relaxing escape or a wild adventure, Zakynthos is the place for both. I experienced both sides of the island and I still cannot understand, how this can be true – but it is.

So if you’re not sure this year what type of vacation you’d like to do, then choose to have a bit of everything in Zakynthos.

What To Know Before You Visit Zakynthos

Choose the right place to stay.

tip travel zakynthos

Zakynthos is a pretty big place and your decision regarding your accommodation needs to be a bit careful. According to your age, type and needs, you can choose a different location on the island.

Zakynthos, also called Zante, is widely known among British teenagers and young adults, who are regular visitors of Laganas . Laganas, which is a bay of the island, is advertised as the place of “non-stop partying” and “wild entertainment well into the night”. And it’s exactly that and nothing less.

So if you’re looking for a hotel or room, in which you will sleep mostly… in the morning after a wild night of partying, then go ahead and book your stay in one of the countless studios and resorts of Laganas.

However, if you are the type of visitor that is attracted more to the… sleepy side of the island, then your options are plenty as well. Tsilivi, Argasi, Bochali or close to Vasilikos beach are the most appropriate accommodation hotspots and great starting points for your excursions.

Do not wait to visit Shipwreck Beach !

tip travel zakynthos

One of your first pro moves is to book your tour. Let’s get some things straight first. The Shipwreck (or Navagio in Greek) beach is accessible only by boat. That means that, if you try to get there alone with a car/ATV etc. you will end up taking only a (no-doubt very cool) selfie, with the panoramic view of the beach.

There are many boat tours offered and if you don’t find them, they’ll find you. Still, I recommend booking in advance to get the best tour and time slot, since if you want to avoid the big masses of tourists, you need to try to get an early boat tour and be there before 12:00.

There are several options for boat tours; our preferred option is this tour which combines the Shipwreck Beach & the Blue Caves on a full-day tour. We picked this one because you can choose an early 8 AM start so you can actually visit the beach before the main crowds hit, as well as add on the stunning Blue Caves to your itinerary.

Avoid the crowds – book your Shipwreck Beach & Blue Caves tour today!

tip travel zakynthos

There are several other boat tours you can choose in case you don’t want to visit the Blue Caves or the thought of waking up before 8 AM is too much to beat. In the end, the only thing that matters is that you get to the beach and get to swim in the clearest and bluest waters you’ve ever seen.

On the beach, there is, of course, a shipwreck and it’s no other than “Panayotis” ship. There’s not really a dramatic story behind the ornament of the famous hotspot. Rumors have it that it was smuggling cigarettes and due to bad weather and technical problems, it stranded on the remote beach.

No passengers were harmed during the incident, so you can enjoy a dive without a pang of guilt.

But don’t forget that there are also other beaches worth visiting on the island

tip travel zakynthos

Shipwreck Beach is probably the highlight of Zakynthos. And yet, it keeps getting better.

Agios Nikolaos beach (Saint Nicolas) is the ultimate fun summer setting. If you’re looking for a place to drink a cocktail by the beach and have some relaxed time, Agios Nikolaos’s golden sand is waiting for you.

If then again you’re more fond of the silence, Gerakas beach is no doubt a great choice. Forget your Bluetooth speakers and private umbrellas, cause… you might scare the turtles! Gerakas beach has been chosen to be the “maternity home” by Caretta Carettas, who have surely noticed that the Ionian view has a soothing ability.

Moreover, you can pay a visit to a village, named Keri , where you can find another sandy beach offering watersports.

Last but not least, Porto Limnionas is one of the hidden treasures. It’s a real fjord that exemplifies the beauty of Zakynthos island. Porto Limnionas is not your typical sandy beach but offers crystal clear frozen waters in a beautiful scenic bay.

All in all, there are probably more beaches than your vacation days on the island! Other names you should have in mind while visiting are Porto Zoro, Dafni, Alikanas, Alikes and Porto Xygkia . Just in case you have time and energy left to try a different beach.

Spend some time with sea turtles because you can !

tip travel zakynthos

I could make probably 1000 cringy jokes about turtles that are shell-arious. But I’m gonna stop right here and move on with the crucial info. There are many ways to see turtles on Zakynthos: boat tours, turtle beaches, and diving.

What I believe is more enjoyable than being on a boat that “hunts” turtles for souvenir pics, is naturally bumping into a turtle on a beach. Of course, it’s all about what works best for you. Plenty of boat tours are offered on the island, and this is the one we recommend , as it brings you to Marathonisi Island where the Caretta Caretta turtles nest.

However, there’s the old fashioned way of simply going to Marathonisi (the Turtle Island), which is only approachable by boat and patiently wait for a turtle to show up. However, there is no guarantee that you will actually see turtles this way.

Snorkeling or diving, again, is a very natural way to observe turtles. But – wait for it – no one promises that you will come across the turtles underwater!

In other words, I cannot give you a magic insider’s tip, that will magically bring a gang of turtles to you, willing to hold a selfie stick and hang out with your group. But, what I can promise is that success is a journey, not a destination. Searching for them is half the fun!

Still want to seek out turtles? Check out this glass bottom boat tour which brings you to Turtle Island!

If then again, you absolutely want to spend time with this amazing sea creature, there’s always the option for you to volunteer in Archelon, the Sea Turtle protection society of Greece. Here’s their website for more info.

Eat like a Greek

tip travel zakynthos

We both know that the rest of the article is just a preface. This is the moment we were all waiting for: Zakynthos food tips.

The way I see it, there are always two types of travelers. The one that prefers the touristic restaurants and the one that wants to experience the local lifestyle and food. Don’t look at me, I like both and I eat everything. So I’m going to highlight both types of places with the same enthusiasm.

Since you’re on an island, expect amazing seafood. Grecos restauran t in Laganas is an excellent option for that and is highly suggested. For a more idyllic view, while enjoying your gourmet Greek salad, a visit to Aperitto is worth your time. The setting is very romantic, so it’s perfect if you’re still on a honeymoon phase or… you want to go back to the honeymoon phase.

Greek traditional tavernas, usually with local wine and culinary masterpieces, are spread all over the island. On your way to Vasilikos, the taverna O Aderfos tou Kosta is an amazing choice. There, you can enjoy your warm dinner after a refreshing dive in the beach, in a garden with Greek music.

If then again you start wondering where the so-called “Greek hospitality” is hidden, Xigia taverna is your type of place. Local food and a father and daughter serving you will make you feel welcome in the best possible way!

Last but not least, Malanos is a value for money taverna and definitely not at all worse than the previously mentioned restaurants. You might struggle a bit to find it, but the best places are always hidden.

Have a taste of Zakynthos nightlife

tip travel zakynthos

When it comes to the nightlife, it’s all about what you are looking for as a traveler. Luckily, there are options for all. And I mean it. Whether you are a party-goer or a party-pooper, Zakynthos has your type of night outing taken care of.

There’s a lot of criticism against Laganas as a party place, due to extreme behaviors of drunk visitors. Although I understand the point of the locals and local authorities, Laganas has its own character and a separate place in my heart (as all party places do).

My suggestion for Laganas is the Cocktails and Dreams club. When order at the Bartender a Gin&Tonic, he might ask you back “I have one that costs 3€ and one that costs 6€. Which one do you want?”.

Now, it’s not a time for money saving. You love your liver more than this, so choose the second option and have a safe and fun night!

Small hint, you can go out on the balcony of the club and enjoy the view of the party street and possibly masses of drunk people. Yes, that’s what we “sober ones” do when you get drunk.

Laganas is not, of course, your only option for a night outing. It is just the most intense. However, locals prefer spending their nights in all the other places left on the island. Argasi is considered the most appropriate place for Greek people, who usually prefer the clubs Barrage and Island .

In Argasi, you can also discover a hipster bar named Portokali (or “Orange”), with a great selection of drinks and sweets.

Additionally, you can enjoy a really well-made cocktail in the bars of Bochali . There, you can find an abundance of cafeterias, creperies and ice-cream shops as well. My personal favorite is Base , and I can recall drinking an amazing “pornstar martini” there.

Last but not least, in Tsilivi , you can find once again parties in Laganas’ style.

Add some sightseeing to your schedule

tip travel zakynthos

To begin with, Zakynthos has a castle. If you’re not aware of it beforehand, you can easily miss that point of interest… as it happened to me. The castle is above Bochali and during the morning hours, you can visit it to see the remains of the old capital of the island.

The Keri Cape is another must-visit place. Rumors have it that you can enjoy the best sunset view from this location. The lighthouse of the village offers a great view of the endless blue of the Ionian sea, on top of a 300 meter high cliff.

Remember that when you reach a large parking area in Keri, on your left you will find a small path, leading to the perfect view spot. Don’t try to go there by car, as it’s very probable that your car will end up being a part of the Ionian view. On your right, you can enjoy the view of the Keri Rocks (or in Greek “Mizithres”).

If you’re the type that cannot go to a place without visiting a museum, I suggest that you give The Byzantine Museum . There you can find paintings of the Byzantium era and religious art. Many of the pieces are of high value and it’s totally worth to see.

You could also pay a visit to Museum of D. Solomos and A. Kalvos . Located in St. Marco square is the museum of two well known Greek poets including Dionysios Solomos. D. Solomos is best known for writing the Hymn to Liberty, which became the Greek and Cypriot national anthem in 1865.

However, since the most important pieces are texts in Greek, I guess it wouldn’t be so exciting for a foreigner. Unless of course, you can read Greek! In that case, this museum is of great national interest and a visit is definitely recommended.

Want to Rent a Car for Zakynthos?

While not all trips to Zakynthos require a car, if you’re staying far from the main town for the local bus station or you want to tour the island independently without going on a guided tour, a rental car may come in handy!  [Just don’t drive if you’re going to be drinking, obviously — taxis exist for that reason!]

What to Bring to Zakynthos

tip travel zakynthos

If you’re planning a trip to Greece, you’ll want to pack all the normal essentials, but here are a few things we strongly recommend bringing that may not have crossed your mind. For more packing tips, check out our complete  Greece packing list.

–  A physical guidebook, in paper or on Kindle . We love  Lon ely  Planet  Greece  for this region and strongly recommend it to supplement blogs. Blogs are great, but a combination of a blog and a guidebook is key to having the best access to information easily at your fingertips.

–  A water bottle with a filter . While often, the tap water in Greece is drinkable, there are places where it isn’t, including some popular tourist destinations like Santorini and Mykonos.

We generally recommend using a water bottle with a purifying filter to reduce your plastic consumption and ensure you won’t drink any funny-tasting water on your stomach that could make your trip unpleasant!

We recommend  the GRAYL water bottle  – it filters water perfectly in an instant so that you can even drink from lakes, bad taps, etc.

–  Motion sickness pills . Very necessary if you’ll be taking a ferry or boat! The ferries in the Mediterranean can be quite choppy. If you have a weak stomach as we do, save yourself and bring some  non-drowsy motion sickness pills .

–  Travel safety items . We think Greece is very safe to travel, but at the same time, it never hurts to be prepared! Zakynthos is rather safe, but is not immune from pickpockets, so be cautious (this goes double if you plan to go to Athens – the metro is notorious for its pickpockets, and a travel blogger friend of ours got his phone stolen on it!). Some people like to carry  money belts , but neither Stephanie or I use these. Instead, we both carry the same  PacSafe anti-theft backpack .

It has locking zippers, slash-proof construction with metal mesh hidden in the fabric, and tons of other smart security features — all while being cute and stylish enough to be our everyday bag. We recommend it highly for both male and female travelers, as it’s neutral enough to be unisex. We also strongly recommend travel insurance! Our recommendation is at the bottom of the post.

Zakynthos 101: The Beginner’s Guide to Zakynthos, Greece

Greece , Greek Islands , Travel Guides

May 10, 2019

By Ryan Gargiulo

Zakynthos Island (also known as Zante) is the third largest Greek island in the Ionian Sea, located off the west coast of mainland Greece.

Zakynthos town includes many squares — every corner and path seems to be brimming with Zakynthos history.

Did you know?: The Venetians ruled Zakynthos island from 1484 to 1797.

The island is now known as a tourist hotspot and it’s also home to two endangered species, the Caretta Caretta sea turtle and the Monachus seal.

Many landmarks are unique to this island such as the three Blue Caves and even a shipwreck to explore for the adventurous.

Before You Go: Travel Insurance

When planning a trip to Greece and the Greek Islands your first priority should be to make sure you make a small investment towards your health and well being by considering an  affordable travel insurance policy  for your trip.

Not only will this budget friendly travel insurance policy cover you if your bags are lost/stolen and if your flight is delayed/cancelled, but you’ll also be covered for all medical and injury related issues as well.

Let’s face it. No parents, family or friends want to have to cover the cost of you getting medevaced home from Greece.

Unfortunate things do happen.

Especially when you least expect it.

Do yourself a favor and consider purchasing travel insurance coverage for your trip so you can rest assured that you’ll be taken care of in the event of a serious emergency in Greece.

P.S. You won’t believe how reasonably priced this travel insurance is.

How to Get to Zakynthos

There are two main options when it comes to getting to Zakynthos — by sea (ferry) and by air.

Both methods of transportation are reliable but choosing between the two really depends on how much time you have to spend in Greece — more importantly how much time you have set aside for your trip to Zakynthos.

There are multiple, daily, direct flights from Athens to Zakynthos Airport and the approximate flight time is 1 hour.

The route from Athens to Zakynthos and vice versa is serviced year round but beware that the schedule could be limited during the late fall and winter months.

My recommendation is to always begin by  researching flights using Skyscanner before looking into taking a ferry to Zakynthos.

With flight costs hovering between $65-85 USD for a one-way ticket, how could you not want to fly?

Tip: Begin your flight search by using the Skyscanner engine embedded below.

If flights to Zakynthos are too expensive, the next best thing would be to resort to a more budget friendly method of transportation; take a ferry to Zakynthos.

Ferries to Zakynthos depart from the port of Kilini (also known as Kyllini) which is located on the Peloponnese peninsula.

The total trip time for the ferry from Kyllini to Zakynthos is approximately 1 hour and the cost is around €10 EUR for a one-way journey.

When it comes to booking ferries to Zakynthos, one of the most reliable and reasonably priced Greek ferry search engines is powered by a company called Ferries in Greece  (highly recommended), a major greek ferry booking hub that helps more than 35,000 passengers get to and from the Greek islands each year.

Things to Do in Zakynthos

There are a wide variety of activities to experience in Zakynthos, from boat trips to hidden caves, to spending time soaking up the sun on some of the best beaches in Zakynthos to visiting monasteries, castles and more.

Below, you’ll find a list of activities and other things to do in Zakynthos.

Be sure to choose your activities carefully because there are a few things on this list that you won’t want to miss.

Shipwreck Beach Zakynthos

Shipwreck Beach

Visiting Navagio Beach, otherwise known as the Shipwreck beach is one of the most popular things to do in Zakynthos, and for good reason.

This beach is absolutely incredible (although extremely touristy) and usually ends up on a list of most unique beaches in the world from time to time.

The only way to reach Shipwreck beach is by boat and the best way to get here is to take a full-day boat tour.

The journey to to Shipwreck beach takes approximately 45-50 minutes and is generally a pretty smooth ride if you’re visiting during the peak season.

A full-day boat tour usually lasts around 8 hours and includes a visit to Navagio beach as well as a visit to Zakynthos’ famous Blue Caves, a short bus ride to the top of the cliffs that overlook Shipwreck beach and a brief tasting at a local winery.

Cost: Approximately $50 USD / per person.

More Info Button

The Blue Caves are located on the east of Cape Skinari and they were created from centuries of erosion.

The caves are mostly known for the shades of deep blue water found in the deepest parts of the cave.

The morning light reflects off the water perfectly to create beautiful photo opportunities.

If you’re interested in visiting the Blue Caves, we recommend you book the full day tour above which includes a visit to Shipwreck beach and the Blue Caves all in one day.

Keri Caves Arch Zakynthos

The Keri Caves and “The Arch” are popular destinations for tourists to witness on Zakynthos island.

There are multiple scuba dive operators who run tours to the Keri Caves.

If you’re into scuba diving we recommend you take a tour and keep your eyes peeled for the loggerhead turtles (also known as Caretta-caretta turtles) that swim around in the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.

Lighthouse at Keri

Stunning views can be seen from the top of the Keri lighthouse which overlooks the cliffs in the distance.

At sunset, the light washes over the scene and creates yet another perfect moment to take pictures.

Marathonisi Island

Marathonisi island (also known as Turtle Island) is home to many Caretta-caretta sea turtles as the government goes above and beyond to protect their habitat.

Snorkeling equipment is available for those who want to take a peek under the water to see them.

Zakynthos Marine Park

The National Marine Park of Zakynthos is located on the south coast and focuses its efforts on sheltering the fragile ecosystem of the island.

The marine park protects the Caretta-Caretta turtles and the Monachus-Monachus Mediterranean seals.

With a wide diversity of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals as well, there is no shortage of wildlife in this national park.

Byzantine Museum

History buffs will be sure to enjoy the Byzantine Museum on the island — especially considering it only costs €8 to enter and offers tourists a chance to see various art pieces and 360-degree frescos.

The descriptions of art pieces found in the museum are explained in both Greek and English.

Nautical Museum

Founded by Anthony Miller, the Nautical Museum is the only Greek Museum to proudly display maritime history from as early as the 1600’s.

In addition to watercolors that show the progression of shipping, it also presents depictions of Byzantine ships from the beginning of the empire to their demise in 1453.

Church of St. Dionysios

The Church of St. Dionysios is gorgeous, elegant, and holy place that celebrates the Island’s Patron Saint.

Not only can visitors ask the priest to let them take a glimpse into a vault, but they are also encouraged to donate a list of names so that prayers can be offered to those on the list.

Venetian Fountain

The Venetian fountain is located in Krioneri and it brings back a part of history to the present day.

While it is only a stone fountain today, the long passages used to feed the entire city with water.

This location is sure to bring to light the immense knowledge that the ancients of this island once had.

Zakynthos Venetian Castle

The Zakynthos Venetian Castle is located in the city of Mpohalis and was the former capital of the island almost centuries ago.

The castle was demolished in 1480 but was renovated in 1514.

Today, any visitor can take a look at the old prison system, the way gunpowder was created, explore the premises of the fortress, and even old abandoned church ruins.

Anafonitria Monastery

The Anafonitria Monastery is a holy place where tourists sometimes visit as part of a Zakynthos island tour.

Here, you can learn about the history and culture of the island as well as enjoy the stunning scenery which surrounds the monastery.

Gerakas Beach Zakynthos

Zakynthos Beaches

Interested in catching some rays while in Zakynthos?

If so, here are some notable beaches in Zakynthos which we recommend you visit:

  • Gerakas Beach
  • Kalamaki Beach
  • Porto Limnionas Beach

Getting Around Zakynthos

Public transport is readily available on the island although we rarely recommend the use of public transport on the Greek islands due to the reliability factor and the fact that everything is on “Greek time”.

That being said, there are plenty of taxis available as well as more efficient ways of moving around the island such as renting cars and motorbikes.

Renting a car is the the best way to explore the island of Zakynthos.

Zakynthos is quite large — if you decide to rent a car for the duration of your trip, you’ll have the ability to go wherever you want whenever you want.

Looking for the the most reputable Zakynthos rental car company? We recommend RentalCars.com .

The next best way to explore the island is by moto or ATV — especially if you’re traveling as a couple.

Motos and ATV’s are much easier to maneuver on the narrow roads and you’ll also be able to explore more parts of the island which you wouldn’t be able to access by car.

Finding parking is also significantly easier when riding a moto on the island.

Unfortunately, Uber and Lyft don’t operate in Zante but thankfully, taxis are plentiful and are one of the most used forms of transportation on the island.

If you do take a taxi, make sure to negotiate the fare before getting in the car in order to avoid getting ripped off.

Best Time to Visit Zakynthos

The best time to visit Zakynthos is from mid May to late September, although peak season is usually from June to late August.

Tourists should note that Zakynthos weather can sometimes be unbearable during the peak season (June-August) when temperatures soar to 31-35C (90-95F+).

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, it’s best to visit Zakynthos in May through the first week or two of June and the month of September.

As you can see above, Zakynthos truly has a lot of offer for tourists who are visiting for the first time.

If you’re looking to visit somewhat of a lesser known Greek island than let’s say Santorini or Mykonos, we highly recommend you check out Zakynthos island.

Top 10 Things to do in Zakynthos, Greece

Zakynthos is a large northern Greek island known for its stunning Navagio beach and bright blue waters. This is a hidden gem that you may have not heard of but I highly encourage a visit! Zante (what the Greeks call it for short) is an exotic island with a natural landscape of olive trees, beaches, large cliffs, and rolling hills. We stayed in Zakynthos, Greece for one week and absolutely loved our time. If you love adventure as much as us I highly encourage a visit to this stunning Greek island.

1. Blue Caves

A blue caves boat tour is an absolute must thing to do when visiting Zakynthos, Greece. The bright blue waters extend into the light limestone cliffs creating a stunning contrast. The best and only way to experience the Blue Caves is with a boat tour. We visited the small beach of Porto Vromi which had a few boat tour companies so we hopped onto the Porto Vromi Maries Boat Tour . This was a great tour at just €20 per person, our tour guide played fun upbeat music, gave us plenty of time to enjoy each area, and let us jump in to enjoy the cool blue waters.

2. Navagio Shipwreck Beach

Visit Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach when you take your Blue Caves Boat Tour. Most boat tour companies include both destinations in one tour. Navagio Beach is a world-famous beach with stunning bright blue waters and a white sand beach. The name comes from the large ship that washed up onto the beach in the 1980s while carrying illegal contraband. This is an amazing landmark that you can’t find anywhere else in the world with its towering limestone rock walls, clear blue waters, and rich history. You can only visit the beach by boat, there is no access from above, as the rock walls are far too steep for stairs.

Get a glance of Navagia Beach from above at the Shipwreck Beach Viewpoint. The top view showcases the full beauty and size of this extraordinary place. There is a photo spot on top but be prepared to wait in line, during busy times.

3. Wine Tasting

Get out to the countryside and enjoy some wines! Almost every island has a winery with a mix of unique Greek wines. We stopped at Goumas Estate Winery in Zakynthos while zipping around the island on our scooter. This family-owned winery was charming and offered some great wines. My absolute favorite was the smoked rosé, which came from some fires a few years ago that gave the grapes a smokey note. It was very unique and would pair perfectly with a light fish dish!

4. Stay at the Diana Palace Hotel

Diana Palace Hotel is the perfect hotel to book for your summer vacation to Zakynthos, Greece. Whether you are traveling with family, friends, or your spouse this hotel offers a little bit of everything to make your trip fun and memorable. Diana Palace Hotel offers many amenities to make your stay special. To start, there are two pools on the property with lounge chairs and a pool bar. We soaked up the sun on our last day at the pool and it was absolutely delightful. Diana Palace Hotel offers package deals for guests. You can choose from an all-inclusive, bed and breakfast, or half-board.

5. Rent a Scooter & Explore the Island

Zakynthos, Greece is a large island with tons of untouched natural landscapes. There are numerous beaches throughout the island making a coastal scooter drive worth your time. We rented a scooter at Olympic Rentals in Argasi, they were very nice and highly recommended by the Diana Palace Hotel. After a quick €20.00 and some funny-looking helmets, we were off to explore the island. Take in the many olive trees and endless blue sea views!

Tip: Get your international driver’s license before heading to Europe. Rental shops will ask for this and if you are renting a scooter you may want to look into getting your motorcycle license as well.

tip travel zakynthos

6. Mizithres, Keri

Mizithres is one of the most beautiful places on the island with its unique rock structure. This view reminds me of Bali with endless sea views and two large rock formations. To reach the scenic viewpoint park right before the Keri Lighthouse/Restaurant and walk up the windy road/path. You will be blown away by the stunning views!

7. Eat Dinner at Uranus Sky Restaurant

Uranus Sky Restaurant  is an upscale outdoor restaurant serving elevated Mediterranean dishes. It is a stunning restaurant with a large center column that draws the eye in and creates symmetry. Uranus Sky Restaurant offers a creative and contemporary spin on Ancient Greek recipes and traditions. Each dish has a meaning and story behind it that resembles Greek mythology.

Location | What To Order: Aphrodite’s Hedonism – Figs & Goat Cheese

tip travel zakynthos

8. Go Snorkeling

One of the best spots to go snorkeling is Careta Careta Trampolino Beach located on the Northern tip of the island. This was one of my favorite adventures during our time here. There is a maze of stairs to reach the sea with multiple diving platforms for optimal cliff jumping. Snorkeling here is phenomenal with clear blue water and varied sea floors giving you a view of the different depths of the ocean.

tip travel zakynthos

9. Visit the Windmills

There are windmills located throughout the Greek Islands, all with their own charm. The Potamitis Windmill is right next to the Careta Careta Trampolino Beach and offers stunning views of the vast Ionian Sea. There is a restaurant on top with food and cold drinks, perfect for a sunset evening after snorkeling.

10. (Marathonísi ) Turtle Island

Marathonísi is a small island off the South end of Zakynthos. Tourists flock here each year to see the famous turtles that hatch on the turtle-shaped island. Book a full or half-day boat trip to the island for a day of swimming, sightseeing, and spotting the beautiful sea turtles.

Greece is a popular holiday destination for many reasons. A trip to Greece or one of the smaller islands can also be very affordable. In this post, I am sharing an epic Zakynthos travel guide to help you plan yours. Find all the amazing and beautiful things to do in Zakynthos and more.

My trip to Zakynthos was special, as good friends of ours were getting married there. They wanted to celebrate both of their bachelor parties in Zakynthos Greece. So in no time, a date was arranged, and we boarded the plane to Greece with ten men and nine women.

This was my first visit to Greece – is it just me, or are you also super excited when you’re about to discover a new country? The moment I get off the plane my eyes start to sparkle, I’m instantly happy and I’m ready to take on a new adventure. This time was no different.

Zakynthos is located on the western side of Greece .

Zákynthos is also known as Zante. The town is home to a ruined castle of the Byzantines, the beautiful Cameo island , a belfry of the 16th-century Agios Markos Church, an epic Solomos Square, and art in the form of frescoes and icons.

The weather in Zakynthos is super pleasant. Greek food, especially Greek Meat Pie , is delicious and you must give it a try.  Although the island itself is relatively small, there are countless fun activities to experience.

Within the space of approximately 410 km², you can find all the ingredients for a diverse holiday under the sun. Zakynthos is a super popular tourist destination for bachelor’s parties, friend’s trips, and family summer holidays.

How to get to Zakynthos

Zakynthos is located in Greece. It is a European Union member and uses Euro as its currency. Passport holders from other EU countries, the US and Canada can enter Greece without a visa. For others, a Schengen Tourist Visa is required for entry.

When arranging your trip to Zakynthos, keep in mind that it’s a tourist destination so it’s not easy to get there by plane during the off-season. Most airlines only fly here during the summer season – which is from the end of May until September.

Cost-wise it isn’t too pricey. On our trip, we paid 90€ for a return flight from Zaventem Brussels.

The nearest airport to Zakynthos is Zakinthos (ZTH) Airport. You can also connect via other nearby airports like Kefallinia (50.9 km/ 31.62 miles), Preveza (128.4 km/79.90 miles), Corfu (220.4 km/136.702 miles), and Athens (268.2 km/166.52 miles).

You can pick up a rental car from the airport or use a private transfer. Here is a private transfer from the airport to Zakynthos town.

Zakynthos and the Ionian Islands are connected to the ports of Patras and Kyllini. From Zakynthos, you can visit the nearby islands of Ithaka, Lefkada, Kefalonia, and Corfu.

Depending on the day and the ferry company you choose, the journey can take around 3 to 5 hours. Ferries run daily from Kyllini, Patras to Zakynthos all year round. In summer, there are several boats that sail out daily.

Where to stay in Zakynthos

Many tour operators offer packages with activities and accommodation and this is generally the easiest and cheapest way to arrange your trip to Zakynthos, especially if you are traveling with children.

Pro tip: Be sure to reserve boat tours and hotels ahead of time in the peak seasons.

If you feel like something a little more authentic, though, here are some great options.

Olea All Suite Hotel

The five-star Olea All Suite Hotel lies right in the midst of nature, surrounded by beautiful olive trees. Surprisingly, it’s still within walking distance of Zakynthos town and the beach. The question is whether you want to leave this beautiful hotel at all! More info and booking can be found here.

Zante Maris Suites

In this beautiful adults-only hotel, enjoyment comes first. It is a five-star venue – you can even book a room with a private pool. For more info and booking click here.

tip travel zakynthos

Take a Half-Day Trip to Marathonisi and Keri Caves

Keri Caves is located on the southern coast of Zakynthos, and this is a perfect half-day trip idea where you can go swimming.

When you start from Zakynthos town, you will arrive at the Argassi Bridge which was constructed in 1885. Stop here for photos, and then continue on to Kalamaki Beach to learn about the turtle nests in the area.

Up next is the town of Laganas and the island of Marathonisi. At Marathonisi, you can admire beautiful caves and white sand beaches and soak in the sun.

From here, you will finally get to the Keri Caves for a swim. If interested you can also travel to the Aristeon Olive Oil Press, and learn about the long history of olive oil production on the island and taste some samples in the Greek Islands.

You can also book a day tour here .

Go horse riding

Fancy surprising your other half with a romantic date? Go horse riding along the beach during sunset.

We did this activity during the bachelorette’s day and were really pleasantly surprised. Laganas Horse Riding Center guided us wonderfully – you can enjoy a ride even with no experience at all.

Explore a Greek Farm and visit Zante Town

The Greek island of Zakynthos is known as “the flower of the East”, and you can experience all of it by embarking on a guided tour at an organic farm.

As part of the tour , you can also enjoy samples of the local produce.

You must also explore the town of Zante or Zakynthos. By joining a tour with a local you get to learn about the port city’s history and its art and culture.

Visit the Greek Orthodox St. Dionysios Church, which was named after the patron saint of the island. Spend some time here, and see the silver casket that houses the remains of St. Dionysios.

Scuba Diving

One of the coolest things about Zakynthos is that you can enjoy beach vibes, cultural exploration and indulge in water activities including scuba diving.

Turtle Beach Diving Centre, located at Limni Keriou Beach is great for new and advanced divers. You can sign up for a lesson, and they train you and also provide you with diving equipment.

Swim at Porto Limnionas Beach

Other than scuba diving, you must go swimming at Porto Limnionas Beach. This is one of the prettiest beaches in Zante.

Although small it is truly breathtaking with a secluded cove surrounded by jagged cliffs. This beach does get crowded though (as it is picturesque), so do plan ahead.

Climb to the Panagia Skopiotissa monastery

Love to hike? Head to the Panagia Skopiotissa monastery. This Monastery is situated on the top of Skopos on the Greek island of Zakynthos, and takes you through a scenic 4-km climb.

It starts from Argassi Village to the remains of Panagia Skopiotissa via a well-marked walking trail. The old monastery is beautiful and has gone through recent renovations, plus the view from here is magnificent – highly recommended!

Eat delicious food in Zakynthos – Where to find the best restaurants and markets in  Zakynthos

Holidays and good food go hand in hand (or so my husband always says!).

Fortunately, there are several restaurants in Zakynthos where you can enjoy delicious meals in a beautiful setting.

Here’s a list of where you can find the best Greek food during your stay in Zakynthos:

  • Nobelos SeaSide Bio Restaurant – The name says it all. The restaurant is located directly on the waterfront, and from your cozy wooden table, you look out over a small beach, a blue-green bay, and many fishing villages. The ultimate holiday feeling! The cocktails can definitely be recommended here as well.
  • Porto Roma – Enjoy traditional Greek cuisine, fresh seafood, and fish, with a beautiful sunset and the sound of the waves in the background. Be sure to try the specialty of the house – delicious lobster spaghetti.
  • Tropic’s Beach Bar – The perfect restaurant for anyone who likes good food, tasty cocktails, and a romantic setting.
  • Porto Limnionas Tavern – The menu is full of delicious Greek dishes, all reasonably priced. From the terrace you can enjoy a beautiful view over the sea – it’s a place where the people of Zakynthos like to go to relax and enjoy the beautiful nature.
  • Mythos Restaurant – Experience the ultimate holiday feeling here. The dishes are simply heaven, and the setting is beautiful and romantic.

Zakynthos is a great destination for couples, groups, and families. Keep in mind that it is touristy especially from late June onwards as travelers flock there to have a good time.

For us it was not an obvious destination, in the beginning, we prefer something along the Amalfi Coast . However, Zakynthos is definitely a beautiful place to explore and one with gorgeous scenery, crystal clear waters, art, and great food.

I hope you found this post useful in planning your trip. If you have any questions do let me know in the comments below.

Largest of the Ionian Islands, Zakynthos (a.k.a. “Zante” in Italian) is just over 320 kilometers west of Athens and a very popular Greek island for getaways due to its calm turquoise waters, unique natural landscapes, culture, agriculture, and happening nightlife in Zante Town and Laganas.

I believe Zakynthos to be one of the best Europe beach destinations with its plethora of soft, sandy beaches, most notably Navagio beach (Shipwreck beach).

Zakynthos is also well known for its endangered Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) sea turtles. Conservation efforts for the species is well known, especially in the National Marine Park of Zakynthos . Encroaching on the species and nests is strictly prohibited, but if you are lucky you may see egg hatchings in the spring and summer.

Home to 15 villages that dot the interior and coastlines, each offers its own cultural and outdoor attractions. Zante island is exciting to explore.

Is Zakynthos worth visiting alone?

When it came to Mykonos or Zakynthos, I chose Zakynthos on my latest Greece solo travel, and I’m so glad I did.

It’s impossible to not take beautiful photographs of the Zakynthos island beaches, rock face cliffs, water caves, panoramic views, and sunsets. Zakynthos also boasts music, festivals, hiking, wine tasting, kayaking and other water sports.

The opportunity to relax on a quiet beach with the possible encounter of swimming with sea turtles was a big draw for me. I consider Zakynthos a well-rounded Greek island with much to hold my attention. The locals are also very friendly, adding to Zante’s charm.

An upbeat or lazy getaway, it’s no wonder Zakynthos attracts tourists of all ages. You’ll be enthralled with all that Zakynthos has to offer. I think Zakynthos Greece solo travel is well worth your time.

The best time to go to Zante, Greece depends on the weather, water, costs, activities, and events.

Zakynthos Weather & Costs

Zakynthos’ yearly average temperatures range from low 70°s F to high 50°s F. Zakynthos’ peak tourist season is during summer, June to early September, when Zakynthos is at its hottest and driest. These are ideal months to visit Zakynthos.

Summer is also when villages are full of tourists, however, so prices are at their highest. Nightlife is also liveliest during the summer. Book your Zakynthos accommodation well in advance for a summer stay. On a budget, book further away from the beach.

The weather is still dry and warm in the spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October), but it can cool off at night and be windy, if not chilly.

Water and air temperatures, outdoor activities, and sightseeing are still pleasant in the spring and autumn (shoulder season) months. Accommodations cost less and there are fewer tourists than the summer months as well.

The wettest, windiest, and coldest months November through March. There may be less excursions and activities these months as well as tourist season really drops off. Of course, this is when tourist costs will be at their lowest if you are visiting Zakynthos on a budget.

Greece Eco Travel Tip s

Like traveling in Santorini , it is advised not to drink Zakynthos’ tap water due to the high mineral content . Tap water is, however, safe to use for cooking and brushing your teeth.

Unfortunately, the popular solution is to buy bottled water. If you do, buy a very large (1.5L or larger) of water and use it to fill up your BPA-free collapsible water bottle with filter when needed. If you have any left over, give it to your hotel. Do not waste it by throwing it out.

To cut down on plastic waste, ask if your hotel if they can fill up your travel water bottle with their own fresh water source (larger water containers).

Zakynthos Events

I always suggest checking the local events calendar when planning solo travel.

There are holidays and festivals in Zakynthos year round. Consult them to know how they may impact or enhance your solo travel in Zakynthos.

Is Zakynthos Expensive?

Zakynthos is not as expensive as some other Greek islands, like Santorini . Zakynthos accommodations may tend to higher in the nightlife towns of Laganas, Zante Town and Tsilivi. Accommodation prices should go down the further you stay from these villages or going in the off (or off off) season.

In the summer and shoulder season months, you could pay around 150-250€ a night for a nice hotel those three villages, if not more, depending on your accommodation tastes. It could be less if you book well in advance and shop around.

A lunch with beer could run 15€ plus tip, a night out with drinks could be around 40€ or more with tip. This, of course, does not include activities or excursions. Plan your solo travel budget accordingly.

If budget is a factor, consider going in winter or shoulder season months and/or stay further away from the beach.

You can also make your solo travel dollars stretch by doing free things to do in Zakynthos like going to the beach, lounging at your hotel pool, taking a self-guided hike, enjoying strolling the villages, and/or visiting the beautiful churches who gladly accept a small donation.

Zakynthos Greece Travel Tip s

When visiting churches in Greece, it is best to be respectful by covering your shoulders, arms and legs, and do not wear flip flops. In hot weather, consider packing light weight cotton pants and a scarf or wrap.

Flights to Zakynthos

All flights to Zante arrive at the Zakynthos Airport Dionysios Solomos (ZTH) (a.k.a. Zakynthos Airport). Zakynthos Airport has one main terminal and there are multiple airlines that fly to Zakynthos .

The airport is located on the southeastern side of the island, 5 kilometers south of Zante Town and 7 kilometers northeast of Laganas. If your Zakynthos hotel does not offer airport shuttle service, there are other Zakynthos Airport transport options.

Search for Cheap Flights to Zakynthos

If flying short distances to or within Greece, take the train , bus , or ferry , instead. These transportation methods may save you time and money, and the scenery will be much prettier.

Zakynthos Airport Transportation

Zakynthos airport car rental.

Honestly, the best way to visit Zante island is to explore as much of it as possible, and as easily as possible. This means getting a rental car in Zakynthos , which is not very eco-friendly or affordable if you’re on budget solo travel in Zakynthos.

You could rent a car at the airport or, depending on your length of stay and budget, take your hotel shuttle, the public bus , or a taxi from the airport and rent a car later for just a day or two. Ask your hotel to assist you with a rental car.

It is helpful to know how to drive a stick-shift (manual) as the typical Zakynthos car rental is a manual. However, they do also come with UBS port and GPS, which makes for easy island navigation.

Four wheel ATVs are popular on Zakynthos but are noisy and dirty, and, in my humble opinion, ruin the tranquility of the island.

Explore Zakynthos Car Rentals

Zakynthos airport taxi.

Getting a Zakynthos Airport taxi is easy. The taxi stand is to your right when you exit the airport terminal. Taxi fares vary on where you are staying on island of Zante. Fares are posted on the taxi stand and on the Zante Taxi website .

I recommend a taxi as it’s not expensive and quick.

Zakynthos Airport Transfer

Hiring an airport private transfer may save money depending on where you are staying. Always have with cash for tipping, just in case you cannot tip on a credit card.

Try a Welcome Pickups private transfer . Welcome Pickups works with 5-star taxi companies, based on rider reviews, providing safe airport transfer service with local, English-speaking drivers. You can book the private transfer in advance on a flat, pre-paid fee, get flight-delay monitoring, and qualify for free cancellation.

I have not yet tried Welcome Pickups, but I hear they are a convenient, reliable and safe option for private airport transfers, something solo female travelers can truly appreciate.

Uber, at time of writing, is available in Athens, not in Zakynthos.

Zakynthos Bike & Scooter Rentals

Bike and scooter rentals in Zakynthos are also available, which could possibly save money on getting around parts of the island.

Zakynthos Public Bus

The cheapest, and fairly quick way, from the airport is to take the Zakynthos public bus. However, it only goes to Zante Town.

Ferry to Zakynthos

If you’re already in Greece, like Athens, you can take a ferry to Zakynthos. However, there is no direct Athens to Zakynthos ferry. You will have to take a bus to Kilini to catch the Kilini to Zakynthos ferry , which takes an hour.

Passenger ferries arrive at the port in Zante Town. Like the airport, you have the same transportation options to get to your hotel.

Is Zakynthos walkable?

As an island, some form of ground, or water, motor transportation is best to get around Zakynthos to enjoy the beaches, hiking, villages, historical sites, and wineries.

Zakynthos villages themselves are very walkable. Outside the villages are opportunities for hiking, which could be hilly.

You may also encounter steep paths to access beaches. Be sure to research the beaches before you go or book excursions. It’s best to have a pair of comfortable walking shoes or sandals to be prepared for any type of terrain or water activity.

Zakynthos Public Transport

Like Santorini, KTEL bus operates in Zakynthos . This is an inexpensive and eco-friendly way for access to many island locations. Although there are some inter-city buses, most start from Zante Town. Depending on where you are staying, this could add a lot of transportation time your solo travel.

Still, this is an option should you need Zakynthos island transportation. Buses are air conditioned and tickets are less than 2€. There could be wait lines without shade, depending on the stop, so be prepared to stay hydrated in the heat. Check the bus routes and schedule in advance.

More Zakynthos Transportation Options

Crime in Zakynthos is very low. It is also considered very safe to walk alone in Zakynthos day or night. I didn’t feel worried about my safety at night as a solo female traveler over 50.

I will reiterate, however, to be careful walking at night outside of villages where there may not be street lighting or sidewalks. People may drive fast on the island roads. If you’re unsure about walking at night, take a taxi.

Always practice general safety measures, such as keeping your belongings on you at all times, especially in crowded or touristy areas.

Only bring beach travel essentials to the beach. Never leave them unattended. Read more on solo beach trip tips .

In short, you should consider it safe to travel to Zakynthos as a single traveler over 50.

Sunset at Laganas Beach Zakynthos Greece

I’m not one to tell someone else how to pack, but there definitely some solo travel essentials I would recommend taking on your solo travel to Greece, like the following.

This list of travel essentials combined can make your Zakynthos Greece solo travel easier and more memorable while being friendlier to the environment.

Where to stay in Zante depends on what type of activities you want to do. If you want to go to the beach every day, stay in a beach village, not Zante Town. If you want nightlife, stay in Zante Town or Laganas.

As a first-time solo traveler to Zakynthos, I think it’s ideal to have access to the best of both worlds with activities accessible by foot including quick accessibility to the airport or port.

Therefore, I recommend staying at Laganas Beach on your Zakynthos solo travel. Laganas beach is 15 minutes to the airport and 20 minutes to Zante Town. Laganas beach is expansive with umbrella and lounge chair rentals, the Marine National Park of Zakynthos (think sea turtle spotting), and multiple bars, restaurants and clubs all accessible by foot.

Also, Laganas is serviced by the public bus and a departure point for many excursions. In short, Laganas is easy and, I believe, the best place to stay in Zakynthos for lively and relaxing first-time solo travel (see yellow area on the map below).

Where to stay in Laganas Zykanthos map

Note, if you are going to Zakynthos in peak season and not a lively nightlife fan, then you may wish to stay in a quieter village or just outside of the beach area of Laganas . Another option would be to travel to Zakynthos in the spring or autumn months when Laganas is quieter.

Greece Solo Travel Tip s

Have WhatsApp on your mobile device(s). Many smaller establishments and activities offices use this as a method of communication making it easier to make inquiries or booking and learn, or notify, of any scheduling changes.

Get the T-Mobile International Plan or something similar in price and features. I no longer work on WiFi only on international travel. I’ll use it when it’s there, but having access to roaming when needed for GPS and Google Maps is a game changer.

Accommodations in Zakynthos

Each Zakynthos village has different accommodation types to choose from. Going in the off season, or booking well in advance, will get you the best Zakynthos accommodation prices.

Book a Travel Sustainable-rated property in Zakynthos , or at least employs these methods into their business to reduce your travel carbon footprint.

Hotels in Zakynthos Greece

Hotels in Zakynthos range from budget to budget hotels to luxury villas and all-inclusive resorts. They also book quickly. The longer you wait, the more expensive they will be.

For location, price, breakfast, amenities (including free-cancellation), eco-friendly and sustainable operations, and customer reviews and ratings, here are my best Zakynthos accommodation recommendations for Laganas Beach ideal for first-time over 50 solo travel to Zakynthos (i.e., where I would stay):

Eco-Friendly Places Stay in Zakynthos in Laganas

  • Cactus Hotel
  • Villa Spiros II
  • PRETTY SPÍTI Holiday Home
  • Tzante Hotel Zakynthos, Adults Only

In fact, I last stayed at the Cactus Hotel , just a block away from the beach. The location was perfect. The room was very comfortable. It also had two pools, free parking, and a great breakfast and staff. Dennis was amazingly helpful in providing tips and arranging my rental car. I would definitely stay there again.

In addition to Booking.com’s Zakynthos’ Travel Sustainable properties , Green Globe and Green Key Global also have eco-friendly certified lodging options.

Zakynthos Beaches, Parks and View Points

Sunbathing, walking, hiking, boating, sailing, kayaking and other water sports are dominant in Zakynthos outdoor activities. Zakynthos also offers many places for walks and viewpoints offering spectacular vistas and sunsets.

Unfortunately, thoughtless tourists go off trail or cross marked areas, like on Shipwreck View Point, just to get an Instagram photo, which can be life-threatening . They also litter.

Please obey the signs to respect the environment and protect your safety.

Zakynthos Beaches

Zakynthos beaches (called “paralias”) are outstanding and, I consider, some of the top beaches in Europe .  Most offer beach umbrellas and lounge chairs to rent, as well as places to grab a drink or bite to each.

The following are probably the most noteworthy beaches to try in Zakynthos.

East Coast Beaches

  • Kremidi beach
  • Climati beach
  • Makris Gialos beach
  • Xigia Sulfur beach
  • Alykanas beach
  • Psarou beach
  • Krioneri beach

West Coast Beaches

  • Filippoi beach
  • Atsiganos beach
  • Navagio beach
  • Porto Vromi beach
  • Porto Limnionas beach
  • Porto Roxa beach

Southern Beaches

  • Plakaki beach
  • Marathia beach
  • Agios Sostis beach
  • Cameo Island beach
  • Laganas beach
  • Kalamaki beach
  • Crystal beach (and Marine National Park of Zakynthos)
  • Gerakas beach
  • St. Nicholas beach
  • Banana beach
  • Kaminia beach

It can get very hot in Zakynthos in the summer. Make sure you stay hydrated and wear your good marine and reef safe sunscreen all day.

Best Half & Full Day Group Zakynthos Beach & Boat Tours

Best private group zakynthos beach & boat tours, zakynthos dining & entertainment, zakynthos restaurants.

Zakynthos dining options are plentiful. From any budget, you can find enticing local dishes. You can explore any of the villages for dining, or stay within your own village.

Don’t just research the beaches. Also check out the different village restaurants in Zakynthos so you know where you’ll want to stop during your beach hopping:

  • Restaurants in Zante Town
  • Restaurants in Laganas
  • Restaurants in Tsilivi
  • Restaurants in Kalamaki
  • Restaurants in Argassi
  • Restaurants in Vasilikos

Don’t forget planning for sunsets while dining. The west side of the island is the best for this, of course. My recommendation for laid back sunset dining is L’ été Sunset Bar .

Zakynthos Food

Surrounded by water, fresh seafood is always a top dining choice. Try the calamari, mussels and shrimp.

Of course, you’ll also find the traditional Greek dishes like souvlaki pitas, gyros, stuffed grape leaves, Greek salad, and creamy, Greek yogurt covered in honey. Zakynthos dishes will be made with fresh local cheeses, olive oils, roasted meats, and fruit.

For after dinner, don’t forget a sip taste of Ouzo, the traditional Greek liquor.

Zakynthos Wineries

Of course, it wouldn’t be Greece without wine, right?

Zakynthos does have some nice wineries to try, such as Grampas Winery , Solomos Wines , and Goumas Estate Winery .

My favorite score was visiting Therianos Family Organic Farm . This family has been on this land for centuries and they cultivate their own organic olive oil, raisins, health and beauty products and wine. Such lovely people, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the property and sampling their products. Of course, I didn’t walk away empty handed.

It’s a unique experience and a must in Zakynthos. Stop in or call for a tour .

Eco Travel Tips

Avoid using single-use plastics when dining, shopping and on food or boating tours in Zakynthos to reduce plastic waste and your carbon footprint by bringing your own reusable collapsible travel bags , collapsible water bottle , recycled plastic water bottle carry sling , and bamboo travel utensils so you’re prepared to travel with the planet in mind.

I always travel with the above items. Light weight and taking up very little space in my carry-on bags , I love the convenience and peace of mind these inexpensive, eco-friendly products provide.

Zakynthos Nightlife

The most notable town for Zakynthos nightlife is where you’ll be staying on your Zakynthos Greece solo travel: Laganas. However, stop in to Zante Town or Tsilivi for some festivities and libations.

Zakynthos is known for having music and festivals as well, if you are not into the club scene.

Perhaps your version of nightlife is going to a wine bar or simply a nice meal at a sunset followed by observing the stars. Yes, Zakynthos has those, too.

Here is a summary of the best booking sites I recommend you use to successfully book your travel to Zakynthos Greece solo travel. I use just about all of these for most travel locations. I even gave you my suggested Zakynthos hotel.

The 10 best beaches in Zakynthos

W ith its powder-white sands, vertiginously blue seas and hidden coves where endangered loggerhead turtles come to lay their eggs, the lovely lush island that the Venetians dubbed “Fiore di Levante” (Flower of the East) has some of the Ionian archipelago’s best beaches.

Apart from celebrated Shipwreck Beach, Zakynthos, also known as Zante, the island’s most popular strands are along the east coast, while the rugged and rocky west coast is the best place to find near-empty coves with pristine waters perfect for snorkelling.

From remote cave-dotted strands where monk seals love to linger, to cosmopolitan taverna-lined beaches with superb water sports facilities, these are Zante’s 10 best beaches.

And for more Zante inspiration, see our guides to the island’s best hotels , restaurants ,  nightlife  and things to do . Plan an extended visit with our ultimate guide to planning a Greek island-hopping holiday.

1. Shipwreck Beach

A horseshoe-shaped scoop of pale sand beneath sheer white cliffs on the island’s rugged northwest coast, Navagio – better known as Shipwreck Beach because of rusted remains of the MV Panagiotis which was washed up on the beach after a storm in the 1980’s – is Zante’s most picturesque beach.

Getting there:  It’s a 30-minute boat ride from Agios Nikolaos, Zakynthos, Skinari or Porto Vromi.

Insider tip:  Navagio is often out of bounds because of landslides, but you can get great photos of this celebrated beach fringed by kingfisher-blue waters from the designated viewpoint area near Volimes village.

2. Laganas Beach

Notorious party strip at night, during the day laidback Laganas in the south of the island takes on a sleepy vibe as revellers flock to the resort’s long ribbon of golden sand to sleep off their hangovers on plump comfortable sun loungers, or chill in bars and tavernas behind the strand.

Getting there: Plenty of buses shuttle back and forth between Zante main town and Laganas.

Insider tip: For best sunset views head for Agios Sostis and cross over on the rickety wooden bridge to the tiny island of Cameo. The fee to enter the island includes a drink in Cameo’s scenic beach bar.

3. Marathonisi

A magnet for endangered loggerhead sea turtles, this desert island which can only be reached by boat has idyllic silk sand beaches fringed by pine, olive and green oak forests and lapped by glass-clear waters. During turtle nesting season, visitors can only lounge on a small part of this lovely beach.

Getting there: There are regular taxi shuttles from Keri beach opposite. You can also rent a self-drive boat.

Insider tip: Discover turtle ‘do’s and don’ts’ at the National Marine Park’s visitor centre in Agios Ioannis. Better still, book a day trip to Marathonissi with the accredited nature guides from Nefis Travel.

4. Banana Beach

With its excellent facilities this lively beach on the island’s southeast coast is popular with watersports lovers, who can try their hand at activities ranging from parasailing, and flyboarding, to jet-skiing and kayaking. Ideal for beginners, as well as more experienced watersports fans, neophytes can splash around safely in shallow waters off Banana’s blond sand beach.

Getting there: It’s 20 minutes-drive from Zante town. There’s also a free shuttle from the resorts of Laganas, Kalamaki and Argassi every morning in summer, returning at around 4.30pm.

Insider tip: Families who plan to try different activities should ask about Banana’s budget-friendly package deals.

5. Gerakas

An immense arc of golden-white sand fringed by shallow turquoise waters and framed by twisted grey peaks of natural clay, Gerakas is perfect for younger families who can spend long lazy days on the beach, or seek shade and sustenance in a huddle of low-key tavernas nearby offering hearty home-cooked food.

Getting there: From Zante town it’s a 30-minute drive. There’s a large (free) car park near the beach.

Insider tip: This silk sand beach is popular with nesting loggerhead turtles, so steer clear of sites where the sand has been disturbed and be aware that the beach is off-limits half an hour before sunset.

6. Xigia Beach

Follow the bad-egg smell of sulphur to find this out-of-the-way pebble beach on the island’s northeast coast a few miles from the fishing harbour of Mikro Nisi.

The heady pong emanates from the beach’s vivid emerald-green waters bubbling with mineral-rich thermal springs that are said to cure everything from arthritis to depression and eczema.

Getting there: It’s 8km from Alykes Beach on the road to Cape Skinari.

Insider tip: The water shelves suddenly and there are rocks dotted with sea urchins (their spines are poisonous), so wear rubber shoes and keep a close watch on young children.

7. Agios Nikolaos

Popular with locals who come here to relax in a string of hip tavernas, splash about on jet skis or paddle a SUP or a sea kayak through pristine waters, Agios Nikolaos was named for its tiny whitewashed chapel dedicated to fishermen which overlooks the resort’s endless golden sand beach.

Getting there: It’s along the craggy Vassilikos peninsula near Cape Skinari, some 30kms from Zante town. Self-drive is the best option here.

Insider tip: Agios Nikolaos beach in the north can easily be confused with its homonym in the south of the island which has its own port and a pebble-lined beach.

8. Porto Vromi

For a thrilling beach escape far from the crowds follow narrow roads to Porto Vromi on the island’s less developed northwest coast, where two coves lined with fine pebbles and sugar-white sand gaze out over the ice-clear turquoise waters of a strikingly picturesque fjord-like bay.

Getting there: It’s some 33kms from Zante Town, along a narrow road that winds like a liquorice coil. Taxi or self-drive are the best methods.

Insider tip: There are a few kayaks and water bikes for hire (perfect for exploring the caves and coves nearby). Boats also leave from here to visit the Blue Caves and Navagio Beach.

9. Porto Limnionas

If you don’t fancy sand in your shoes (or sandwiches) this rocky cove hemmed in by high chalk-white cliffs and pinned to translucent turquoise seas is ideal. Fed by underground springs, the refreshingly cool waters, which are deep and clear as glass, are also perfect for snorkelling and diving.

Getting there: From Zante the road wriggles across the island, via a cluster of mountain villages and down to Porto Limnionas’ (free) car park. From here it’s a steep climb down to the beach.

Insider tip: Although this beach is fairly remote, there are a couple of canteens selling water, meat skewer souvlaki and other snacks. There are also a handful of sunbeds and parasols that can be rented by the day.

10. Marathias Beach

Perfect for would-be Robinson Crusoes, this isolated pebble beach is surrounded by pine trees and olive groves in a sheltered bay on the island’s southern tip and gazes out over the pristine waters of the Zakynthos Marine Park to Marathonisi island. There are a handful of sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, but there’s nowhere to buy food or drink so bring your own.

Getting there: It’s 26km south of Zante town near the small hamlet of Keri where the road fizzles to a dirt track. From here it’s a steep hike down to the beach.

Insider tip: Taxi boats make the half-hour trip from Marathias Beach to Marathonisi Island opposite.

The complete zakynthos, greece travel guide.

Navagio shipwreck beach viewpoint in Zakynthos Greece

While most know Zakynthos, Greece for the famous Navagio Beach (also known as ‘Shipwreck Beach’), I was more drawn to the quiet swimming coves and small beaches that dot the coastline. Most beaches here are best seen by boat, unlike other Greek Islands. My biggest recommendation for this beautiful island is to spend at least one day on the water. The beaches only reachable by boat are what make for memorable swims with no one around, with your own private views of limestone cliffs and crystal clear water. So pack a Greek lunch, grab your hat, and let’s dive in!

4-7 DAYS — BEST TIME TO VISIT – MAY THROUGH OCTOBER, LESS WIND & WARMER WATER LATER IN THE SUMMER WEATHER – MILD, RAINY WINTERS & WARM, SUNNY SUMMERS GETTING AROUND – MOTORCYCLE, ATV OR RENTAL CAR CURRENCY – EUROS, MOST PLACES TAKE CREDIT CARDS LANGUAGES – GREEK, MOST PEOPLE SPEAK ENGLISH NEARBY AIRPORT – ZAKYNTHOS AIRPORT ‘DIONYSIOS SOLOMOS’ (ZTH) — Search Ferries in Greece   |  Search Flights in Greece

Where to Stay in Zakynthos

As the north shore is centered around the quieter fishing village of Agios Nikolaos and not far from some of the island’s most notable spots, we opted to stay at Nobelos Seaside Lodge .

Hotels in Zakynthos

Lithies Farm Houses – $ – for a charming stay that’s affordable and unique, consider this family-run farm stay on the southern tip near Vasilikos. The Bay Hotel & Suites – $$ – for direct beachfront access and umbrellas, this modern hotel on the southern shore is nearby plenty of food options and activities. Nobelos Seaside Lodge – $$$ – with a private beach, views overlooking the water and arguably the best homemade Greek food on the island, Nobelos is a clear winner. They’re limited to only four rooms, so book early. Where I stayed & where I’d stay next time. Aliv Stone Suites & Spa – $$$ – a collection of stone suites with private hot tubs and pools makes up this retreat in the northern hills of Zakynthos. The views are incredible. Akron Luxury Suites – $$$ – traditional meets modern in these immaculate suites perched in the northern shore of the island. Each has a private pool and views of the ocean. The Peligoni Club – $$$$ – nearby Nobelos, this gorgeous series of family-run villas is perched on the water and caters to couples and families alike. Where I’d splurge.

Houses in Zakynthos

Fexulis Studios – $$ – simple yet beautiful studios with a kitchenette and terrace located steps from the beach in one of the most desirable spots on Zakynthos. Oceanis Suites – $$ – beachfront apartments with a private pool and uninterrupted views of the Ionian sea. Villa Verde – $$$ – a modern three-bedroom villa situated amongst olive trees, with a private pool and bbq set up. Orfos Villa – $$$ – a choice of a two or three-bedroom traditional stone villa on the north shore of Zakynthos, complete with a private pool and bbq. This location is ideal. Tramonto Villa – $$$ – a traditional stone house with a pool in a small town near Shipwreck Beach. Sleeps 8 people. Villa Harmonia – $$$$ – a luxurious waterfront property with a pool, complete with traditional stone walls and in the middle of Agios Nikolaos in the north. Vais Luxury Villas – $$$$ – these four immaculate villas are perfectly situated before Agios Nikolaos in the north, with private pools and accommodation for two or four people.

Where to Eat in Zakynthos

Nobelos Bio Restaurant – hands down our favorite spot on the island for dinner by the sea. The shrimp saganaki is to die for!

Tables by the water at Nobelos bio restaurant in Zakynthos Greece

Cave Damianos – a great dinner spot with picturesque nooks and views of the mountains.

To Diafokereiko – this traditional family-run restaurant has delicious homemade food and has been in business since the 1600’s.

L’ete Sunset Bar – a newly-opened, trendy restaurant with stunning 360 degree views of the water and tasty cocktails.

Bassia Restaurant – this beautiful and highly-rated restaurant was recommended to us for a date night, but we unfortunately didn’t make it this time.

Keri Lighthouse Restaurant – go for the incredible view of Mizithres, not the food.

What to Do in Zakynthos

Rent a boat – if there’s only one activity you do on Zakynthos, make it going on a boat. The island shines most for its undiscovered coves and beaches, and off-the-beaten path swimming spots. We hired from Keri Beach to see the south shore and from Agios Nikolaos to explore the north shore (no boat license required). I much preferred the south shore departing from Keri Beach. The limestone cliffs and Keri Caves made for jaw-dropping backdrops. Plus, we spotted turtles and dolphins on the way to Mizithres, and it was less crowded and windy compared to the north side.

Exploring Zakynthos Island by boat from Keri Beach in Greece

Stop for local products – a favorite stop was the ‘Fresh Orange Juice Bar’, a tiny stand for orange juice on the cliffside. We also pulled over to buy local honey, olive oil, and sundried tomatoes from farm stands around the island.

Explore little towns – the small towns of Keri and Volimes come to mind first. Keri is en route to Mizithres and worth a stop for lunch and exploring. Volimes shows up in a few recommended guides and is located near Shipwreck beach, but it’s not exactly lively. An earthquake in 1953 has rendered many buildings unusable and collapsed, which makes for interesting photos but a somewhat depressed feel.

Traditional greek town of Volimes in Zakynthos Greece

Visit Navagio ‘Shipwreck’ Beach – both from the viewpoint above and by boat. Expect crowds here unless you’re willing to plan an early morning (think 8am or before) or late evening visit. As of 2020 the path to more uninterrupted views is closed due to it being a dangerous spot, as a few have fallen over the side. Venturing off on your own isn’t worth it; you’re likely to be yelled at by the local guards, who also track your license plate and will ticket you.

Watch the sunset – a few great spots to catch the sunset are Porto Limnionas, L’ete Sunset Bar, Keri Lighthouse, and Navagio Beach. You will get the best view of the sun over the water from the west side of Zakynthos island.

Beaches to visit in Zakynthos

Xigia sulfur beach.

The natural sulfur at this small beach makes for beautiful photos as the water takes on a milky turquoise hue. Go early, it fills up. Food options nearby: yes, there’s one a short walk up from the beach and within a short drive away.

Xigia sulfur beach in Zakynthos Greece

Navagio Beach

Easily the most famous beach on Zakynthos is Navagio. The best viewpoint is from above. As of 2021, there’s now a railed off platform for viewing. It’s crowded throughout the day and due to the sun’s path, you may not see it in full sun until after 11am. By boat your best chance of avoiding people is extra early (think 8am). You’re better off seeking out nearby beaches if you want a spot to yourself. Food options nearby: no, but there are drinks for sale at the viewpoint.

Mizithres Beach

This stunning beach evolved from a landslide a couple years back that connected it to a large nearby rock. Perhaps one of my favorite spots on the island as it’s so unique. Note it’s only accessible by boat. Food options nearby: no, but if you only want a view of the beach then head to Keri Lighthouse Restaurant.

Mizithres beach from above in Zakynthos Greece

Korakonissi

Not so much a beach as a swimming hole, this spot is best visited earlier in the day when the water is calm. There are cliff diving spots, but use caution as they are not marked. Food options nearby: one restaurant next to the beach (closed during our visit).

Korakonissi beach in Zakynthos Greece

Porto Limnionas

A local’s favorite, this beach has it all: crystal clear blue water, places to sun, cliff diving, a lively restaurant with views, and parking. Great to combine when visiting Korakonissi (above). Food options nearby: Porto Limnionas tavern overlooks this beach.

Filippoi Beach

Towering cliffs surround this turquoise cove, with plenty of rocks to sun on. However, t’s not for the faint of heart! The drive down is steep, with one winding road that barely fits two cars. Best visited by boat if you’re not up for the task. Food options nearby: no.

St. Nicholas Beach

A sandy beach at the very southern part of the island with sunbeds. Family-friendly, and there’s an option for water sports nearby. Food options nearby: yes, there’s a bar on the beach.

Paralia Vasilikos beach in Zakynthos Greece

Nobelos Beach

Not marked as this is the stone beach in front of Nobelos Restaurant. If you’re visiting for lunch or dinner, you can grab a sunbed here and easily spend the afternoon with a drink. Food options nearby: Nobelos Restaurant.

Hey there! Loved this blog about Zakythnos! I cannot wait to explore. By chance do you remember the estimated cost to rent a boat, and for how many hours? Did you find this to be an easy and/or cost effective option in comparison to hiring a boat/captain for the day? Thanks for all of the help already! Thanks, Ambar

' src=

Selena Says

Truly can’t remember the price but typically renting a boat in the greek islands for a day is around $250-$500 depending on the island. This usually includes gas but be sure to ask. It is definitely more affordable then also hiring a boat captain, but depends on your comfort level with operating a small boat!

My fiance and I are currently planning our 14 day Greece trip for September this year. We definitely want a short time in Santorini and avoiding Mykonos after reading your wonderful blog. We love beautiful beaches, amazing food, activities/boat days + maybe a short time with some good night life. We love a good balance of relaxing + fun! Considering Milos, Zakynthos, Ios! Would love your reccs! <3

I loved Milos and would recommend it! It should also be less crowded in September then in July/August. Zakynthos is beautiful, but not as charming as Milos and much larger. I have not personally been to Ios but have friends who love it; we are not as keen on nightlife and I hear it is known for its nightlife scene.

Hi! Very impressive blog! I am interested in renting a boat to explore Zante island. You mentioned that you rent from Keri beach to explore south shore. Can you share your boat route and how long it took? Also is it challenging to drive a boat for the first time?

Hi Chloe – hard to say how long it took because stopped every time we wanted to see a new spot. But going from Keri beach to the final spot we stopped (Myzithres) was probably less than 2.5 hours by boat. If you aren’t familiar with driving a boat you may want to stick more to local areas if the wind is strong. That said, you can ask that the rental company give you extra instructions and makes sure you’re comfortable before leaving the harbor. Good luck!

Your blog is amazing !!!

I will be going to Greece next summer (Athens > Mykonos > Santorini. I have a few extra days for another island and I am really hesitating between Milos and Zakynthos.

I will be going with my boyfriend, we are a young couple looking for an island with beautiful landscapes but also not too calm. Do you have any recommandations ?

Thank you 🙂

I would highly recommend Milos! It’s my favorite island to date, and is a lot more accessible given your route (you can ferry from Mykonos or Santorini to Milos). Enjoy!

I love your blog format, your PHOTOS are incredible and the content is super helpful!

I actually got to spend my 21st there, we saw Kleftiko and went to Firaplaka for the under ground lunch – so yum!

So just writing to say thank you for the time put into this blog

The Northern Tip of Zakynthos

tip travel zakynthos

Welcome Back Everyone,

Today I have some great pictures from my trip to the most Northern Tip of Zakynthos. This is such a beautiful spot and a great day out with amazing views!

The area of Skinari is close by to the Shipwreck and Blue Caves and holds some breathing views of endless blue. As you look out from the cliff top you will even see Kefalonia in the distance! You will find two Windmills and a Lighthouse in this special place as you wander around the cliff area you are able to get down to the sea via set of stairs set in the rocks however be aware there is no beach here.

Enjoy a tradional Greek meal at the taverna in Skinari or sip a glass of local wine while whilst admiring the view!

This is popular spot for snorkelling due to the range of marine life living in these waters, so what are you waiting for grab your snorkel and explore this blue paradise!

The BLue Caves located below Skinari were first discovered in 1897. The white rocks, the sea and the reflections from the sun creating amazing shades of blue throughout these caves.

To reach Skinari you can hire a car locally in your resort or even jump in a taxi, it is definately worth the trip . I hope next time you are in Zakynthos you visit this beautiful place!

I will be back soon with my next adventure in Zante. Thank you again for reading, don’t foget to sign up!

With love from

Grécko a ostrovy

Pozývame vás teda na cestu letného oddychu a zábavy, ktorú môžete harmonicky spojiť s poznávaním histórie a kultúry tejto jedinečnej krajiny.

Europe Travel Guide

Last Updated: April 18, 2024

The historic city of Prague with its classic stunning architecture

From beautiful Paris to smoke-filled coffeeshops in Amsterdam, Oktoberfest to La Tomatina, Europe is a massive, diverse continent with an unlimited assortment of things to see and do. You won’t have any problem filling your time, whether you’re backpacking Europe for a few months on a budget or just spending a few weeks there on a well-earned vacation.

The continent boasts wonderful beaches, historical architecture, amazing wine, and tons of world-class festivals. Every country is incredibly different from the next too, providing limitless variety in what you do during your trip.

I first backpacked Europe in 2006 and was hooked immediately. I’ve been visiting every year since, have run tours around the continent, and even wrote a book on traveling in Europe . It’s a destination I love and never get tired of exploring.

This guide will give you an overview of Europe and the tips and tricks you need to start planning your trip. I’ve also written extensive travel guides to each country on the continent (linked below in this post) so you can get more in-depth information for your specific itinerary too!

Top 5 things to see and do in europe.

Aerial view of Greek town along the Mediterranean ocean, with mountains in the background

1. Tour the Greek Islands

These islands are the mecca of summer beach fun and each is unique in its own great way. There’s Ios (beach party central with archeological ruins and awesome boat tours); Kos (ancient ruins and nature); Crete (Bronze Age ruins of Knossos, hiking, beaches, and wine), Santorini (iconic blue water, white buildings, and local wineries); Mykonos , (the upscale party island with beautiful beaches, villages, and sunsets), Naxos (best island in the Cyclades). Plus, Milos, Corfu, Lemnos, Zakynthos, and so many more! With hundreds of islands in the country, you can always find what you are looking for!

2. Ride the rails

Europe is famous for its international rail system. Rail passes like the Eurail Pass have been around forever and still make it very easy to get from country to country on a relatively small budget (and with lots of flexibility). Europe has some of the fastest trains in the world that travel up to an incredible 217 mph (350 kph). The whole continent is connected by trains and there’s a growing push for even more connections and long-distance, high-speed trains in order to reduce flying and help combat climate change. There’s nothing more quintessential than riding the trains in Europe and I encourage you to take as many trains as possible. It’s one of the best ways to see the continent.

3. Get lost in Paris

The “City of Lights” is everything people say it is. I fell in love with it the first time I stepped foot in Paris . The city is just magical. You have a ton of museums, cafes, jazz clubs, famous art, and beautiful architecture. I love just strolling around the streets of the Quartier Latin (Latin Quarter) or Montmartre neighborhood as it makes for a breathtaking day. Another one of my favorite things to do here is just sit in the Jardin des Champs-Élysées park and picnic like the Parisians. For something a bit different, check out the famous Catacombs and Paris Sewer Museum. With so much to offer in the way of culture, history, and gastronomy, it would take years to see everything here but you can still get a good feel of the city in a few days.

4. Go city hopping

There are so many amazing cities in Europe that we’d need a top 100 to list them all. Here are some of my personal favorites and must-see cities: London is rich in history, culture, and the famous Big Ben clock; Edinburgh is a vibrant medieval city with cozy pubs and a famous castle with a huge New Year’s Eve Party; Amsterdam has cozy coffee shops and canopied tree-covered canals; Berlin has a wild party scene, street art, and the Berlin Wall; Barcelona has tapas, beach, and unique Gaudi architecture; coastal Lisbon has colorful tiles, old tramcars, cobblestone streets and plenty of fresh seafood; Prague has a beautiful intact Old Town, incredible architecture and eclectic bars; Tallinn Estonia has beautiful medieval buildings with colorful roofs. Florence  is a mecca for Italian Renaissance architecture, art history, and gelato; Stockholm mixes medieval architecture and modern art and design. Crisscross the continent, take in the culture, and enjoy all the historic cities!

5. Hit the Alps

Whether you go skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer, the Alps hold some of the most breathtaking views in all the world. You don’t even need to be an expert hiker because there are mountain trails for all levels and crystal-clear Alpine lakes. Check out the spectacular Eibsee trail loop in Bavaria at the foot of Die Zugspitze, Germany’s tallest mountain, for the clearest, multi-colored, sparkling lake you’ve ever seen. Or the Männlichen Kleine Scheidegg Panorama trail in Switzerland’s stunning green and snow-capped Alps. Or visit Italy’s Dolomites in South Tyrol for the scenic Seceda trail. The Alps have trails for every fitness level and in every season.

Other Things to See and Do in Europe

1. tour amsterdam.

I love Amsterdam so much that I lived here for a short period of time in 2006. Here cobblestone and brick streets weave around lovely canals as people ride their bikes to and fro. My favorite things to enjoy here are Amsterdam’s vibrant art and music scene and there are also a ton of interesting museums here like the Anne Frank House, FOAM, the history museum, and the hemp museum. Be sure you get out of the center into Jordaan and Oost with their wonderful outdoor cafes and fewer tourists. Also, a visit to Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without a canal cruise to visit the many islands and there are many to choose from that include snacks and drinks, sunset cruises, live guided tours, and more.

2. Hang out in Barcelona

Barcelona is a city that goes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It truly could give NYC a run for the “city that never sleeps” title. Be prepared for late-night dinners and parties until dawn. Besides a great food and nightlife scene, there is a wonderful beach, tons of Gaudi architecture (including the fairytale-like Parc Güell, as well as the iconic Sagrada Familia , which has been under construction for over 100 years!), incredible food tours, one of the best history museums in the country, and lots of outdoor spaces. What I love about Barcelona is that when you’re ready to chill, you can wander around Parc de la Ciutadella and marvel at the majestic fountains, plant life, and buildings created from an ornate military fortress.

3. Visit Berlin

Hip and trendy Berlin is an energetic destination. It is one of Europe’s most affordable capital cities, with a vibrant music and art scene and a growing foodie movement. Be sure to spend some time learning about the city’s darker history via the many excellent museums, memorials, and landmarks. The East Side Gallery, a section of the Berlin Wall that’s now painted with murals, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe are two especially powerful reminders of Germany’s past. For all periods of German history, don’t miss the Deutsches Historisches Museum (German Historical Museum) – it’s one of the best history museums in the world. Once you’ve had your fill of history, relax in Berlin’s many green spaces, from Tempelhof Field, the site of a former airfield and popular local hangout spot, to Tiergarten, a tree-covered former hunting ground for 17th-century aristocrats.

4. Drink beer at Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is a must for anyone going to Germany at the end of September. While not a budget option since beers now cost 15 € a maß, I love the energy and friendly camaraderie this event inspires. For two weeks, millions of people from all over the world gather for lots of beer, excitement, music, and wild fun. Watching thousands of people sing together, raising quart-sized beer mugs for endless toasts, and enjoying the general party atmosphere makes you feel good about the world. (Or maybe that’s just the beer?) Just be sure to book your accommodation well in advance and be prepared to pay top prices for them. If you don’t have an outfit, don’t worry, there are plenty of shops even at the main train station where you can buy a Bavarian dirndl dress and men’s lederhosen.

5. Experience London

Get a taste of English culture in diverse London . The museums here are some of the best in the world (most are free) and include the Tate, the British Museum, the City Museum, the National Gallery, the Historical Museum. There’s no shortage of iconic sights here as well, with Big Ben, the House of Parliament, the London Eye, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and of course, Buckingham Palace. I love London’s diversity because of the countless international eateries with great food and wonderful pub culture, perfect for after a long day seeing the sights. Head to Brick Lane on the weekends for some amazing food and craft markets. I prefer Paris to London, but there is something sophisticated and fun about London. Just watch those pints — London is not a cheap destination!

6. Get outdoors in Scandinavia

My favorite region in Europe is Scandinavia. The quality of life here is high, the people are beautiful and friendly, and the cities are clean and historic. Cycling the cities, taking canal tours, hiking the vast forested areas, archipelago hopping, enjoying fika (a Swedish coffee break), and warming up in saunas are just a few of the popular activities that await you here. True, this area of Europe is not cheap, but there are plenty of ways to reduce your expenses. Don’t let the high prices scare you away. Highlights for me include Copenhagen , Stockholm , Gotland, Norway’s fjords, and Lapland in Finland .

7. Get enchanted in Prague

Prague has an amazing history and is one of the most beautiful and picturesque cities I’ve ever seen. Highlights include the 9th-century Prague Castle, the magnificent Charles Bridge (built in the 14th century and one of the oldest standing bridges in the world), the 10th-century old square with its iconic astronomical clock, and the winding Jewish Quarter. Even if you only have a few days there don’t miss the free walking tour which is one of my favorites in Europe and the best way to learn about the Old Town and the tragic history of the city that went from thriving Bohemian capital of art, music, and literature to part of the Iron Curtain after WWII. Some of my favorite gems here include the fantastic black light theater shows in 4D and the one-of-a-kind medieval dinner show in an old tavern complete with musicians and jugglers not to mention hearty food and drinks. During the weekends it heaves with people enjoying the bars, cheap beer, and delicious food so try to visit during the week (and in the spring or fall) to beat the crowds.

8. Relax on the French Riviera

Here, you can pretend to live the high life for a little bit. Have fun in the sun, relax on the beach, swim in azure blue water, hobnob with the rich and famous, and sail on (or gaze at) gigantic yachts. As for cities, Nice is nice with its palm-tree-lined promenade, old town, and many art museums. If you want to go see how the rich and famous live, spend an afternoon checking out Cannes to soak up some glamorous vibes on La Croisette where they hold the famous Cannes Film Festival. The kingdom of Monaco with its tiny streets, beautiful buildings, and world-famous casino is just a skip away too.

9. Enjoy the great outdoors in Interlaken

Located in the beautiful mountains of Switzerland, Interlaken is a gorgeous place to unwind with fantastic hiking, delicious hot chocolate, and plenty of outdoor sports. The area is full of natural attractions to explore, including the St. Beatus Caves (complete with a legendary dragon), the cascading 500-meter-high (1,640 feet) Giessbach Waterfalls, the Jungfraujoch mountain railway (which leads to the highest train station on the continent), and a plethora of lakes (hence the town’s name). It’s a good alternative to all the cities and museums. Interlaken is also a popular party destination for backpackers and other young travelers. By far, my favorite scenic and visually stunning trail was the Oberberghorn panoramic hike, where you can wander the green mountain ridge ogling the amazing views and the turquoise-blue Brienzersee.

10. Experience history in Rome

In this thriving historical city, you can’t walk two feet without stumbling over a ruin, making Rome a history buff’s dream. Its tiny streets are perfect for wandering as you explore the Colosseum, see the Forum and Palatine Hill, visit the Pantheon, spend time in Vatican City, admire the Spanish Steps, and toss coins into the famous Trevi Fountain. The skip-the-line tickets can definitely be worth it so you don’t waste time waiting outside attractions. Rome also has amazing food (it’s Italy, after all) and nightlife. Visit the Trastevere area for a taste of “local” Rome and chill bars. It’s my favorite area in the city because you feel like you’re in a small village in the middle of a big city.

11. Hike around the Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is my favorite part of Italy. These five beautiful cliffside towns are perched near warm waters and beautiful olive and grape groves. There are wondrous and strenuous hikes in these hills; for a real challenge, take trail #8. Or just walk the coastline for something less difficult. Many activities here revolve around the coastline: kayaking, swimming, having a beach picnic or visiting the Technical Naval Museum. If you happen to be here in December or January, don’t miss the Nativity Manarola, the world’s biggest lighted nativity scene.

12. Tour Krakow

Krakow looks like it stepped out of a medieval postcard. It’s a hip, trendy, and youthful city that’s the center of education in Poland, meaning there are a lot of university students here. Most travelers come to party here (the vodka is cheap) but try to enjoy the city’s history and food besides just the bars. Walk the Royal Road through the Old Town to the 13th-century Wawel Castle, tour Schindler’s Factory (where Schindler saved over 1,200 Jews during World War II), and visit the sobering Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. You can also take a fascinating day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Wieliczka Salt Mine, a 13th-century mine with cavernous chambers, statues, chapels, chandeliers, and cathedrals all carved out of salt.

13. Visit the ruin bars in Budapest

The coolest nightlife in all of Europe is found in Budapest . Built in abandoned buildings, ruin bars feature funky art installations, repurposed furniture, and quirky decor. They are amazing, fun, and great places to meet locals, as people of all ages flock here. Open since 2001, Szimpla Kert is the original ruin bar and one of my favorites, along with Instant-Fogas Complex, which takes up an entire building and is actually many different bars in one. Don’t skip the ruin bars — they’re one of the most unique things about the city!

14. Explore Cornwall

The best part of England is outside London, yet unfortunately, not a lot of travelers leave London. Head west to the area of Cornwall for cheaper prices, welcoming locals, natural beauty, great hiking, rolling hills, plenty of medieval castles, and picturesque small towns. If you like biking, the Camel Trail from Bodmin to Padstow is worth the trip and you even pass by a local vineyard. It’s an easy way to spend a day (and it’s pretty flat so it’s not too hard to do.) Plus, I had the best fish and chips in Cornwall! Overall, it’s what you think of as “traditional England.”

15. Walk the Camino

El Camino de Santiago (The Way of Saint James) is an ancient pilgrimage route that stretches from France all the way across northern Spain. It is a 500 mile (800 km) trail that winds through incredible terrain, ending in Santiago de Compostela at the cathedral where St. James is supposedly buried. As a pilgrim, you get a “pilgrim’s passport” which allows you to stay in affordable pilgrim-only hostels, making this a surprisingly budget-friendly adventure. While it usually takes over a month to complete, you can just walk a section if you don’t have the time. To receive a “Compostela” (certificate of completion), you just need to walk the last 62 miles (100 km), which generally takes 4-5 days.

16. Throw tomatoes during La Tomatina

By far my favorite festival, the largest food fight in the world happens during the last Wednesday of August in Bunol, Spain. What started in 1945 as a local brawl has turned into a massive event drawing tens of thousands of people from all over the world. For about an hour, everyone throws tomatoes at each other, leaving streets ankle-deep in tomato juice. Afterward, everyone walks down to the river, cleans off, and then heads to the town square for sangria and music.

17. Find Dracula in Romania

Not a lot of people visit Romania but this underrated country in Eastern Europe has undiscovered yet picturesque medieval towns like Brasov (home to “Dracula’s castle”), Sighisoara, and Sibiu; gorgeous beaches on the Black Sea; and incredible hiking in the Fagaras Mountains — all at dirt-cheap prices. Other major sights include frescoed Byzantine monasteries, the steepled wooden churches of Transylvania, the hip university town Cluj-Napoca, the post-communist capital of Bucharest, and the Danube Delta, a huge nature reserve.

18. Drink whisky in Islay

Whisky has a long history on Islay , an island off Scotland’s west coast. It’s been made there since the 16th-century — first in backyards and then, starting in the 19th-century, in large distilleries. Over the years, whisky from the island came to be considered a specialty and was used to flavor a lot of other blends on the mainland. There are currently nine working distilleries on the island, all located along the island’s shores, with Laphroaig, Ardbeg, and Lagavulin being the most famous. Most distilleries here make single-malt Scotch, meaning that only one type of grain (barley) is used. My visit here was amazing and, even if you don’t like whisky, there are tons of good hikes and walks throughout this magnificent island.

19. Explore Iceland

Iceland is a magical country with majestic waterfalls, hidden hot springs around every corner, and sweeping vistas unlike anywhere else in the world. After my first visit, the country quickly became one of my favorite countries. With whale watching in the summer, the northern lights in the winter, and geothermal baths for soaking in year-round, there really is no bad time to visit! While Iceland’s main draw is the epic natural landscapes, it’s worth spending a couple of days in Reykjavik with its café culture, artsy feel, and brightly colored wooden row houses.

20. Sail the Croatian coast

With calm winds, short distances, a coastline littered with over 1,000 islands, and countless historical sites, Croatia is one of the world’s best sailing destinations. If you can, go during the shoulder season when you can find some great deals. Plan to stay at least a couple of days on one of the islands, with the most popular being Brac, Hvar, Krk, Cres, and Lošinj. However, don’t be afraid to get off the beaten path and explore some of the lesser-known islands such as Silba, Vis, and Lastovo. If you want to splash out and spend a week partying on a yacht, check out The Yacht Week, which hosts week-long parties, complete with DJs, from May-September. You can book a full boat to share with friends or just a cabin if you’re traveling solo. Prices start at 5,250 HRK per person and go up to 9,300 HRK.

21. Explore the Balkans

While the Balkans have become more popular with backpackers in recent years, it’s still largely overlooked by most budget travelers, despite being an extremely budget-friendly region. The Balkan peninsula is home to great (and again, overlooked) wine, beautiful medieval towns like Kotor and Mostar, stunning mountainous landscapes, beautiful pebble beaches, coffee culture, fresh, hearty yet inexpensive food, and museums covering the area’s history, including the most recent turbulent events of the early 1990s. I especially loved my time in Albania . Don’t miss the beautiful beaches in Ksamil, nicknamed the “Maldives of Europe’ as well as the mountain village of Gjirokastër, which was occupied by Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. The Balkans have so much to offer for every budget and every country has its unique cultural flavor.

22. Take a wine tour in the Loire Valley

Located in central France, the picturesque Loire Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site and stretches 280 kilometers (174 miles) along the Loire River. One of the major wine-producing regions of France, the area is home to some of the best wines in the world, with over 1,000 vineyards open to the public. Even those who don’t drink wine will enjoy the beautiful small towns, great food, and the region’s over 300 impressive chateaux. I loved the medieval Chenonceau Castle and Chateau Villandry and the small villages like Saint-Florent-le-Vieil. Spring and Autumn are my favorite times to visit because you can go biking and do outdoor activities when it’s not too hot and there are fewer people. It’s an area not to be missed.

23. See Fado in Portugal

Fado is an important musical tradition in Portugal , originating in Lisbon and stretching back some 200 years. The word “fado” likely stems from the Latin word for fate, and it’s very haunting, poetic, and emotional music. Most of the songs follow themes of loss and mourning, and the music was popular with the working class (especially sailors). Performances normally take place in restaurants during dinner. In Lisbon, head to Clube de Fado, Tasca do Chico, Parreirinha de Alfama, or Senhor Vinho.

24. Tour green Slovenia

Slovenia is one of Europe’s least-visited destinations, which is mind-blowing to me because it’s an amazing place to visit. Slovenia offers all the beauty of Western Europe but at a fraction of the cost and with a fraction of the crowds. Perfect for outdoor adventure lovers, Slovenia offers rugged mountains, untouched landscapes, fantastic ski resorts, plentiful wine, sprawling cave systems, incredible food, and postcard-perfect lakes, such as the famous Lake Bled with its castle on an island. I loved Piran, Slovenia’s often overlooked coastal Venetian-style harbor town that was actually founded 3000 years ago. Stroll around its beautiful windy cobble-stoned streets, beautiful plazas, and take advantage of the many affordable restaurants right on the water. Make sure to also spend a few days in the country’s capital, Ljubljana, known as one of the continent’s greenest and most livable cities. Take a river cruise to see the city and enjoy the friendliness of the locals.

Europe Travel Costs

a traditional Austrian home overlooking the snow capped mountains and rolling hills in the Austria countryside

Accommodation – Accommodation prices vary greatly by region. In Western Europe, hostel dorm rooms cost between 25-45 EUR per night, depending on the room’s size and the popularity of the hostel. I stayed in a 6-bed dorm in Berlin for 20 EUR, while the same one would have cost me around 45 EUR in Paris. A room in Paris costs on the higher end and a room in cheaper Athens costs on the lower end.

In Eastern Europe, hostel dorm rooms cost between 10-15 EUR per night depending on the size of the dorm room and the popularity of the hostel. The further east you go, the cheaper it gets. Expect to pay around 30-60 EUR per night for a private room that sleeps two.

In Scandinavia, hostel dorm beds cost around 25-45 EUR, while private rooms are 65-80 EUR. Budget hotels start around 85 EUR.

Most accommodations offer free linens, free Wi-Fi, and a lot offer free breakfast, but it’s important to check specific websites for exact amenities.

Campsites cost between 10-15 EUR per night for a basic plot for two without electricity.

Food – Food traditions in Europe run deep, stretching back centuries to become integral parts of each country’s culture. From baguettes in France to tapas in Spain, from hearty Eastern European stews and goulash to the fresh vegetables and olive oils of the Mediterranean, European cuisine varies as much as the countries themselves. Food prices differ greatly across the continent, so check individual country guides for specifics.

But no matter where you are, even in the more expensive countries, finding places to eat within your budget is easier than you might think. Throughout Western Europe, you can find small shops, street food stalls, or food trucks where you can get sandwiches, gyros, kebabs, slices of pizza, or sausages for between 3-7 EUR. These shops are most often found in train stations, bus stations, and main pedestrian areas, and offer cheap food alternatives that can have you eating on 12-17 EUR per day. Fast food (think McDonald’s) costs around 7-10 EUR for a combo meal.

Turkish, Middle Eastern, and Vietnamese eateries abound in Germany, while Indian food is incredible and everywhere in the United Kingdom. Meals at these restaurants usually cost between 8-12 EUR.

Restaurant meals in casual, traditional eateries generally cost around 13-25 EUR for a main dish and drink. Food is much cheaper in the east than in the west, and in the west, northern regions like Scandinavia and the UK are more expensive than southern countries like Spain, Portugal, and Italy.

In Eastern Europe, even if you are eating out for all your meals, you can still get by on a food budget of as little as 15 EUR per day.

For drinks, a pint of beer is 2-5 EUR, a glass of wine is 2-7 EUR, a cappuccino is 2-5 EUR, and cocktails range from 6-14 EUR.

If you eat out, do so at lunch and get the prix-fixe menu (two-course or three-course set menu). Restaurants offer this set menu during lunch, and with prices between 10-20 EUR, it’s a way better deal than the regular dinner menu. You can also get affordable lunches at outdoor markets. So many European cities have huge fresh food markets throughout town.

You can cook your own food for around 45-65 EUR per week. This gets you basic staples like rice, pasta, seasonal produce, bread, and some meat. You can save money by shopping at discount supermarkets like Profi, Lidl, Aldi, and Penny Market.

If you want to save big money on meals, head to one of the markets, pick up some cheese, wine, bread, meats, or anything else, and go to the park for a picnic. (Or grab a sandwich for later!) You’ll find the locals doing the same thing, and it’s one of the cheaper ways to get a true taste of local food.

Backpacking Europe Suggested Budgets

Prices for travel in Europe vary greatly depending on how far north, east, south, or west you travel. If you stick to the budget accommodations, food, and tours listed here and use all my tips on saving money, you need about 65-110 EUR per day in Western Europe, 40-50 EUR in Eastern Europe, and about 85-130 EUR in Scandinavia.

Those numbers reflect a traveler who stays in hostels, cooks some meals and eats out cheaply, enjoys a few drinks, and sticks to free and cheap activities like hiking, walking tours, and enjoying nature. This is your typical backpacker budget. You aren’t going to have a fancy time, but you aren’t going to want for anything either.

However, by getting tourist cards and rail passes, avoiding flights, occasionally Couchsurfing or camping, cooking all your meals, and not drinking, you can travel a lot cheaper. On this budget, you could do Western Europe on 35-45 EUR per day, Eastern Europe on 20-25 EUR, and Scandinavia on 50-65 EUR. That would require you to take a train or a bus or hitchhike everywhere, skip most museums, and limit how often you go out.

Generally, the suggested daily budget for Europe is 80-120 EUR. You can use the chart below to get an idea of how much you need to budget daily. Keep in mind these are daily averages – some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in EUR.

Europe Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Individual country guides have more specific information on how to save money in them but here are some general tips on cutting your costs while you explore Europe:

  • Picnic – This continent has a lot of little shops where you can buy pre-made sandwiches or ingredients to make your own. Many supermarkets have delis as well where you can get food to go. Buy some food, eat outside, and watch the city and its people go by. It’s a much more enjoyable and cheaper way to eat.
  • Eat local and cheap – Not into picnicking? Eat at local sandwich shops, pizza parlors, Maoz, Wok to Walks, and outdoor street vendors. Avoiding restaurants and eating at a lot of the local “grab n’ go” places gives you a taste of the local cuisine at a much cheaper price. If you’re really on a budget, use your creative cooking skills to prepare meals at the hostel as well.
  • Stay with a local – Hostels can add up really quickly. If you don’t have any friends with whom you can stay, consider using Couchsurfing , which connects you with locals who let you stay with them for free. Plus, they tend to also have meetups to meet other locals and travelers. It’s a great way to save on accommodation and meet a local who can share their insider tips and advice.
  • Camp in a garden – A very good camping service specific to Europe is Campspace , which allows you to pitch a tent in someone’s backyard for free or for a small fee (around 10-20 EUR). All of the garden owners have profiles that tell you what services and facilities they offer. Also, many countries allow wild camping (like Sweden), which can save you a fortune if you have a tent.
  • Take the bus – Budget bus companies like Flixbus can take you across the continent for cheap. I personally feel it’s best for day travel as sitting up for an overnight bus isn’t really ideal for sleeping. It isn’t glamorous, but with tickets starting at 5 EUR, you really can’t complain!
  • Get a Rail Pass – Eurail Passes have saved me hundreds of dollars. If you are traveling far distances and through many countries, they are a great deal.
  • Take the free city tours – One of the great things about Europe is that you can find free walking tours in all the major cities. They can be a great way to see the city attractions, take in some history, and learn your bearings without spending any money. Just make sure to tip your guide at the end!
  • Plan accordingly – Plan your trip around Europe so you avoid doubling back. Transportation is a big expense so proper planning can save you a lot of money (and time). Go in a straight line or a loop. Booking your accommodation ahead helps you save as well since cheap, good places unsurprisingly get reserved first. One thing I’ve learned is that waiting until the last minute means you get stuck with expensive places or cheap places no one wants.
  • Fly cheap – If you know where you are going and a train won’t do, try to book flights early. You can often get round trip fares for as little as 5 EUR from many of the European discount airlines like Ryanair or Wizz. Many capital cities have smaller airports farther from the city with ‘inconvenient’ times but cheaper fares. Keep in mind you might need to factor in an early morning Uber or taxi if the busses aren’t running and you have an early flight!
  • Drink less – Those 5 EUR beers add up. Hit happy hours or pick and choose when you party. Hostel bars are a good place to get cheap drinks or buy your alcohol at the supermarket. Plus, in Europe, it’s legal to drink outside in parks, plazas, by the lakes or rivers. You’ll find you can save a lot of money by not going to bars and clubs. Partying your way across the continent will destroy your bank balance in no time.
  • Get a city tourist card – Many local tourism offices sell a tourism card for all their attractions, tours, and restaurants. This card gives you free entry and substantial discounts on all the attractions and tours in a city, free local public transportation (a huge plus), and discounts at a few restaurants and shopping malls. They save a ton of money. If you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing, get one of these cards.
  • Rideshare – If you’re flexible in your schedule, use the ridesharing service BlaBlaCar to catch rides with locals between cities (or countries) by paying a small fee. It’s like Airbnb but for rides. I used this service in Switzerland and, not only did I save a lot of money, but I got to meet interesting people and learn about local culture and life. Drivers are verified and it’s perfectly safe, though sometimes rides cancel at the last minute (which is why you need to be flexible). Check their ratings first and try to use rides where the person has done many trips.
  • Bring a water bottle – The tap water is safe to drink in most of Europe, so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.
  • Get a HostelPass – HostelPass is a discount membership for hostels in Europe. Members get 10-20% off select hostels around Europe, as well as perks like free breakfast or free drinks. There are discounts on tours and activities too. It’s a great way to save money if you’re bouncing around Europe as they have hostels in 18 countries around the continent.

Where to Stay in Europe

Europe has a ton of budget accommodation options. The individual country and city guides have tons of recommendations but here’s a short list of some of my favorite budget hostels and hotels around Europe:

  • The Flying Pig (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
  • Hotel 54 (Barcelona, Spain)
  • Generator Hostel (Copenhagen, Denmark)
  • Harcourt Hotel (Dublin, Ireland)
  • Castle Rock (Edinburgh, Scotland)
  • Ios Palm Pansion (Ios, Greece)
  • Greg and Tom’s Party Hostel (Krakow, Poland)
  • Largo da Sé Guest House (Lisbon, Portugal)
  • Sophie’s Hostel (Prague, Czech Republic)
  • The Yellow (Rome, Italy)
  • City Backpackers (Stockholm, Sweden)

How to Get Around Europe

The famous steam train from Harry Potter crossing an old bridge in Scotland

Public transportation – Transportation around most European cities is by tram, subway, or bus. Prices are typically around 2 EUR for a one-way ticket in Western Europe and closer to 1 EUR in Eastern Europe. Most large cities also have day passes available that offer unlimited public transportation. These passes are usually 5-12 EUR per day.

In large cities with international airports, there is usually a bus or train available that ferries travelers from the downtown core to the airport. Expect to pay around 5-15 EUR to get to/from the airport.

Bus – Buses are not quite as comfortable as Europe’s trains, although certain lines do have great amenities (like roomy seats and Wi-Fi). While buses are not the most efficient way to travel around the continent, they’re certainly dependable, reliable, and cheap. You can find last-minute rides for as little as 5 EUR. A route from Berlin to Munich is about 25 EUR, while Paris to Bordeaux can be as low as 10 EUR. Longer routes, like Amsterdam to Copenhagen, start at around 47 EUR.

Each country has its own national bus service, but some lines also take you long distances internationally. Megabus and Flixbus (which now owns Eurolines) are the most popular companies.

Train – Train travel is a great way to see Europe. Intercity train prices vary wildly from country to country, depending on whether you take the slow train or a high-speed train and how far in advance you book. For example, a high-speed train from Berlin to Munich costs around 38-60 EUR, Bordeaux to Paris is about 50-85 EUR, and Madrid to Barcelona ranges from 45-85 EUR. Non-high-speed trains and other intercity lines are a lot cheaper, generally costing about 40-50% of the price of high-speed trains. Eastern Europe inter-country trains usually cost between 45-100 EUR when the ticket is booked last minute. Short train rides of 2-3 hours within countries cost about 27 EUR.

To find routes and prices for trains around Europe, use Trainline .

You may also want to consider getting a Eurail Pass , which allows travelers to explore Europe by providing a set number of stops in a specific time period. These passes are continent-wide, country-specific, or regional. It can potentially save you hundreds of dollars.

Ridesharing/Car sharing – If your schedule is flexible, use a ridesharing service and catch rides with locals between cities (or countries). Drivers are verified and it’s perfectly safe. BlaBlaCar is the most popular.

If you’d rather rent a car yourself and find passengers to share a ride with, use Discover Cars to find the best car rental prices.

Flying – Budget airlines are so prolific that competition helps keep fares low. You can often find tickets where the fare is just 5 EUR round-trip! Companies like EasyJet, Ryanair, Wizz, and Vueling offer mind-blowingly cheap flights throughout Europe. Book at least a month early to scoop up great deals.

Make sure that the airport they fly into isn’t too far out of your way (transportation from the secondary airport sometimes negates the savings from using the budget airline itself).

Keep in mind that you’ll have to pay to check your baggage on these cheap flights. It costs about 25-39 EUR for one checked bag. If you wait to pay for your luggage at the gate, you end up paying almost double. Travel carry-on only to avoid this added cost.

Hitchhiking – Hitchhiking in Europe is very safe, but it’s not for everyone. Hitching is quite common around the continent and I’ve met a number of travelers who have done it (I, myself, traveled this way in Bulgaria and Iceland). Some countries are very supportive (Romania, Iceland, Germany) while others may be a bit more time-consuming (Italy, Spain). HitchWiki is the best website for hitchhiking info.

When to Go to Europe

There’s no wrong time to visit Europe. Peak season is summer, when Europe gets crowded and August is the time most European families are at the beach so everything becomes more crowded and expensive. But the overall atmosphere and weather are great during this time, so it’s still worth visiting during peak season (just book your accommodation in advance — especially in August). Keep in mind it’s much hotter in summer so if you like AC, be sure to check that your hostel or hotel has it before you book. You can expect the most crowds in Western Europe. For this reason, I feel summer is a great time to visit the Balkans and the Baltics because many people head to the beaches in Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, and Greece.

Shoulder season is spring and fall (April-May and September-October). It’s still warm during this time but there aren’t as many crowds and prices are cheaper. This is my favorite time to visit hotspot places like Spain, Croatia and Greece, where it’s still hot enough to swim in the sea but you have way more room on the beach. It’s also a good time to go hiking in the Alps in Germany, northern Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland because it’s cooler during the day so you’re much less sweaty on the mountain without shade. The weather is good, the crowds are smaller, and the prices lower.

Winter is from November to February but in much of Central Europe, it’s wet and cold until March or April. It gets cold, even as far south as it gets (like Greece). On the other hand, the Christmas season has Christmas markets and festivals galore! Even if it’s cold, this is a cultural tradition you can’t miss and why I love Europe in December. There is hot mulled wine, sweets, and plenty of hot snacks, which vary by country. One of my favorites is Prague because the Old Town Square is lit up with a gigantic tree with aromas of crispy cinnamon pastries and mulled wine. Berlin takes their Christmas markets very seriously, so there are around 80 different markets with special themes.

Winter is fantastic in Europe for skiing and snowboarding but it doesn’t have to break the bank if you plan carefully. While Switzerland and France are probably the most famous, they are also expensive, but there are plenty of budget winter options.

How to Stay Safe in Europe

Europe is very safe for backpacking and solo traveling, even if you’re traveling solo, and even as a solo female traveler. Violent crimes against tourists are very rare. In fact, some of the safest countries in the world are in Europe. (I wrote a whole article about how Europe is safe to visit right now .)

That said, there are scams and petty crimes you should watch out for, especially around popular tourist landmarks. The most important thing to be aware of is pickpockets in crowds and on public transportation. Zip your bags and don’t put your mobile phone in a jacket pocket where someone could quickly take it. This should be obvious but don’t flash your money to let everyone know you have a huge wad of cash.

When choosing a hostel, look for ones with lockers. It’s always a good idea to carry around a padlock or combination lock. Most hostels are safe and travelers respect each other and I’ve rarely seen things happen to people’s valuables. Nevertheless, I always think that prevention is better.

As anywhere, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.). When at the bar, always keep an eye on your drink. Avoid walking home alone at night if you’re intoxicated.

For female travelers in particular, it’s always a good idea to have a bit of extra money on you just in case you need to take an Uber or taxi back by yourself so you don’t take unnecessary risks to save money. If you’re using apps to date people while traveling, please use common sense and meet in public places. Since I’m not a female traveler, please check out the numerous female bloggers who have first hand knowledge of this.

If you’re worried about scams, you can read about common travel scams to avoid here.

If you rent a vehicle, don’t leave any valuables in it overnight. Break-ins are rare, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Be aware that the UK drives on the left and that most rental cars in Europe will have manual transmissions unless you request otherwise.

When hiking, always bring water, sunscreen, and bandaids or foot plasters. There is nothing worse than being halfway up the mountain with a blister and nothing you can do about it!

Likewise, when at the coast, don’t forget not only to wear sunscreen! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people get burnt to a crisp the first day. Be sure to check the weather before you depart and dress accordingly.

If you do experience an emergency, dial 112 for assistance.

Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary to loved ones so they know where you are.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Europe Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

These are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

  • Skyscanner – Skyscanner is my favorite flight search engine. They search small websites and budget airlines that larger search sites tend to miss. They are hands down the number one place to start.
  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • HostelPass – This new card gives you up to 20% off hostels throughout Europe. It’s a great way to save money. They’re constantly adding new hostels too. I’ve always wanted something like this and glad it finallt exists.
  • Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. They have tons of tour options available in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes, walking tours, street art lessons, and more!
  • The Man in Seat 61 – This website is the ultimate guide to train travel anywhere in the world. They have the most comprehensive information on routes, times, prices, and train conditions. If you are planning a long train journey or some epic train trip, consult this site.
  • Rome2Rio – This website allows you to see how to get from point A to point B the best and cheapest way possible. It will give you all the bus, train, plane, or boat routes that can get you there as well as how much they cost.
  • FlixBus – Flixbus has routes between 20 European countries with prices starting as low 5 EUR! Their buses include WiFi, electrical outlets, a free checked bag.
  • SafetyWing – Safety Wing offers convenient and affordable plans tailored to digital nomads and long-term travelers. They have cheap monthly plans, great customer service, and an easy-to-use claims process that makes it perfect for those on the road.
  • LifeStraw – My go-to company for reusable water bottles with built-in filters so you can ensure your drinking water is always clean and safe.
  • Unbound Merino – They make lightweight, durable, easy-to-clean travel clothing.
  • Top Travel Credit Cards – Points are the best way to cut down travel expenses. Here’s my favorite point earning credit cards so you can get free travel!
