Bowen Island is a small piece of land north of Vancouver. It is easily accessible from Vancouver, and you can even do the entire trip without a car making it an excellent day trip, especially in the summer when the town bursts with life.

As soon as you get to Bowen Island you feel like you are so far removed from the city, even though it’s only about an hour trip away. The small quaint village vibe on the ocean makes you feel instantly relaxed.

In this guide, you will find food and drinks, hiking, and other activities to do on the island. I think the best way to spend the morning on Bowen is by grabbing a coffee, taking a nice hike, then grabbing a cold beer while you enjoy the view of the ocean.

Getting There

Table of Contents

The first step to getting to Bowen Island is getting to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. It’s either a 30-minute drive on Highway 1 West or you can take a 1 hour bus.

bowen island day trip by foot

Driving: At Horseshoe Bay, if you have opted to drive, most of the parking in the town of Horseshoe Bay is free but is max 2 hours and you will need more time than that so your two main options are either park at the ferry terminus parking lot, which is about $17/day (2020). The other option is to park further up the hill on Marine Drive at the Park and Ride which is free on the weekdays (though might be full on a nice summer day) and it’s about a 15-minute walk to the ferry terminal. You can also park at Baden Powell Trailhead which is a little further and always free, as long as it isn’t completely full of cars.

Transit: You can either take the 257 or 250 bus that leaves from downtown Vancouver regularly. The bus takes approximately 1-hour ad drops you off right by the ferry terminal. Make sure you leave early in case the bus is delayed, you don’t want to miss your intended ferry.

The Ferry to Bowen Island : costs $10.50 per walk-on passenger round trip (2021), it takes 20 minutes to cross, and a ferry leaves every hour or so. You don’t need to book this ferry, and as a walk-on passenger, you shouldn’t have to worry about getting on (as long as you are on time for the ferry you want).

If you have some time to spare after buying your ticket you can take a stroll around the small town of Horseshoe Bay. You can pick up some basic items that you might have forgotten or stop for a coffee or ice cream (though I would recommend waiting until you get to Bowen for food and drinks). There are a pier and marina next to the ferry that is nice to wander down and try to spot the most expensive boat in the water.

Be sure to keep an eye on your watch and listen for boarding warnings from the ferry terminal so that you don’t miss your chance to board. The 20-minute ferry ride is sweet and short that allows you beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.

Get off the ferry at Bowen Island/Snug Cove and you will be almost immediately engulfed in the quaint town. It’s incredible how fast you feel like you have traveled far from the city, though it’s so close.

Hikes on Bowen Island

There is a map of the trails in a small kiosk at the Ferry Terminal on your left when you arrive at Bowen Island if you want to consult that before heading out. Bowen Island rarely gets snow so these should all be accessible year-round.

These are the top three hikes on Bowen Island, starting with an easy 1km option to a long option at 16km, there’s something for everyone.

1. Dorman Point (easy)

This hike is only 1 km but has some steep parts so it will get your heart rate up a bit. This trail starts very close to the ferry terminal and leads you to views of Howe Sound and the mainland. It is a beautiful short hike for those that want to explore the nature of Bowen Island but only for about an hour or so.

2. Killarney Lake (moderate)

This is a 9km loop around a lake that takes about 2.5 hours to complete. You don’t have to do the whole loop either, you can simply do a short walk, maybe go for a swim, enjoy the beach and picnic tables, and relax.

This hike has little elevation gain but will still take time due to distance, so this is your midrange hike on this list. This hike is in Crippen Regional Park which is very close to the ferry terminus.

3. Mount Gardner (hard)

This is your Bowen Island hike if you want to be on the trail for the whole day. It’s the most challenging option and is definitely an uphill slog in places.

This hike has two start points. If you have decided to drive to Bowen Island you can drive to the trailhead which makes the loop 10km; however, if you have walked on the ferry you have to add on the walk to the trailhead, which follows the same trail to Killarney Lake, so it’s a pleasant flat walk, but it adds another 6km to the hike.

The long version will take 5 to 6 hours and has 800m of elevation gain. You will be rewarded with 360 views of the ocean, surrounding islands, and mainland mountains (and sometimes even Mount Baker) on a clear day.

Food and Drinks on Bowen Island

Before your hike, you may want to stop by one of these places for a coffee or snack or after you finish your hike you may want to treat yourself at one of the quaint pubs or restaurants on the island. Almost every establishment on Bowen Island has a patio or outside area where you can enjoy the views of the ocean so you can’t go wrong picking a place on a summer day.

The town is tiny, only a few blocks long, but it is built on a hill so keep that in mind for your glute muscles. Many of these places close in the winter or have reduced hours, even in the summer some of these places only stay open for certain days or limited hours so I’d recommend looking online before you go to avoid disappointment.

bowen island day trip by foot

Bowen Island Pub or Doc Morgan’s – these are your classic pub options with burgers, good beer, and fish and chips. Doc Morgan’s has the best patio in town that overlooks the marina and gets a lot of sun.

Tell Your Friends Café – this cute little café is just a short walk to your right as you get off the ferry. This is a great spot to stop for your caffeine fix or a little healthy snack before heading out on your hike. (closed some weekdays – check their hours before you go).

Copper Spirit Distillery – a fun little place to stop by and enjoy some unique cocktails with locally distilled spirits (hours are limited so check before you go).

Snug Café – a cozy family-run café that serves breakfast, lunch, and coffee. You can feel the family and local atmosphere as you walk in as this is one of Bowen Islands oldest buildings.

Tuscany Restaurant, Barcelona Tapa, and Rustique Bistro – I am so sorry to these restaurants for bunching them altogether. I have chosen to do so because even though the cuisine is all different (Italian, Spanish, and French) they all give you a similar dining ambiance and the price points are about the same.

At any of these three places, you will find exquisite food and drink as well as a beautiful patio and dining room. These are your choices if you want a fantastic lunch or dinner dining experience.

  • Branch on Bowen – If you are sitting on the beach at Bowen Island on a sunny summer day you are going to want some ice cream to accompany you. Branch is the place you want to go. They serve Earnest Icecream alongside housemade tacos and they also have a cute gift shop. The store is right by the ferry terminal and the beach so it’s a great place to stop by on your way in or out of town.

Things to do on Bowen Island that aren’t Hiking or Eating:

Hiking and eating are the highlights of Bowen Island to me but there are a few other activities you can engage in as well.

Art – there are plenty of little art galleries to pop into in town, just wander around and explore any you come across

Shopping – there are a lot of shops selling sweet little local items – one great place is Branch (listed above because it also sells icecream!)

Kayak or SUP – you can rent kayaks and standup paddleboards in the summer near the ferry terminal from Bowen Island Sea Kayaking. Pricing as of 2020 is $55 for a single kayak for the day, $82 for a double kayak, $30 for a stand-up paddleboard. They also offer a variety of tours and lessons.

Do Yoga – Nectar Yoga is a retreat that also takes day visitors to do yoga in one of the domes surrounded by nature. This is a little off the beaten path so be prepared to drive or take the bus to it.

Farmers Market – this small “trunk” market takes place at the Bowen Island Community School Parking Lot. It is held on Saturdays in the summer between 10 am and noon.

Cycling – bring your bike or rent an e-bike from Bowen eBikes which is located very close to the ferry terminal. The island is 12km long and on a bike, you can make it to the other side much easier than on foot (though be prepared for hills!) You can explore some of the offerings on the other side of the island where it is much quieter such as Cape Roger and other beaches.

Explore the Other Side of the Island – just like what I wrote above for cycling the beaches on the other side of Bowen Island are much quieter and fun to explore. If cycling is not for you and you did not drive your car, there is a taxi service on the island, or you can take the bus! There is a bus that drives across the island that is linked to TransLink, you can use your compass card on it, which I think is just fabulous.

Sit on the Beach – if you don’t want to go to the other side of the island to explore the quiet beaches, there are some available with easy access near the ferry terminal/town. These are not white sand beaches, but they are still nice to sit on for a while and relax or play in the ocean. Note that these beaches get shady earlier in the day because they are on the east side of the island.

For me, the perfect day on Bowen Island would include a great hike, ice cream on the beach, and a beer on a sunny patio. Design your personalized trip and enjoy this quaint little oasis so near yet so removed from Vancouver.

When you are tired and full you can simply walk back onto the ferry you want to catch and head home (they leave every hour and 10 minutes or so).

Of course, if you want to make this a multi-day getaway, there are some lovely and unique places to rest your head. Which include adorable AirBnBs, oceanside inns, and even a yoga retreat. I can’t even begin to start listing them because there are too many unique and beautiful stays to showcase fairly.

Enjoy your incredible getaway to Bowen Island.

The Perfect Bowen Island Day Trip Guide

Bowen Island is a popular vacation home location for British Columbians and serves as a great escape from the city life for Vancouver’s lower mainland.

the perfect Bowen Island day trip

Known as a haven for rest and relaxation away from the city, Bowen Island is just 12 kilometres long and 6 kilometres wide.

Bowen Island has a surprisingly wide range of activities to enjoy; outdoors there are nature hikes and walks, road and mountain biking, kayaking, swimming and beachcombing, picnics, golf, even horseback riding and scuba diving – a destination for all types of travellers.

We gathered a list of things to do on Bowen Island including where to grab a bite to secret hiking trails on Bowen Island that may include finding a mastodon in the middle of the forest.

How to get to Bowen Island

there are lots of things to do on Bowen Island, read our post for some of our favourites

Bowen Island is an idyllic destination in the middle of Howe Sound, just a short trip over from West Vancouver.

The Queen of Capilano, the Bowen Island ferry, leaves Horseshoe Bay every hour or so, earliest departure at 5:50 am and latest at 10:00 pm. The ferry ride crossing the channel is only 20 minutes, enjoy the views of Howe Sound and watch for marine and birdlife!

The Cormorant Water Taxi provides both scheduled and charter service throughout the area, they operate year-round with a capacity of 1-100 passengers from Vancouver, for more information, check them out here.

Getting to Horseshoe Bay

We recommend leaving your car behind for this trip if you can. There is limited parking in Horseshoe Bay and tends to fill up quickly on weekends and during the summer. Not to mention, you’ll be saving yourself car fare when bringing it on the ferry!

Taking public transit to Horseshoe Bay is relatively simple and fuss-free. The West Vancouver Blue Bus numbers 250 Horseshoe Bay and 257 Horseshoe Bay Express provide regular daily service between Downtown Vancouver and Horseshoe Bay.

Things to do on Bowen Island

As we mentioned earlier, Bowen Island may be small but packed with lots of activities for locals and tourists. So when planning your Bowen Island day trip, here are some activities to consider for your next visit.

Take a Scenic Cycle on a Bowen eBike

Rent an electric bike from Snug Cove ahead of time or in person at their store. This is a great alternative if you don’t want to take your car around town and worry about parking. These bikes are great for exploring the hilly Bowen Island and an electric-assisted bike is capable of making the most of your visit. You’ll be able to cycle to lots of remote viewpoints, hiking trails, remote beaches, visit artists and farmsteads around the island and so many other places.

Artisan Square

In the mood to do a little shopping? Artisan Square is located just 10-15 minutes uphill from the ferries (did we mention that Bowen is a hilly place?). Artisan Square is the place to be if you’re in the market for some handcrafted souvenirs, hand-crafted chocolates, eco-friendly soaps, fine cashmere, and other artisanally made goods.

Kayaking – Bowen Island Sea Kayaking

Take your explorations off the land and on to the sea! Sea kayaking is another popular activity for those wanting to explore the natural wonderland that is Bowen Island.

Bowen Island Sea Kayaking offers kayak and paddleboard rentals, tours, and lessons for anyone wishing to explore the inlets, islands, beaches around Bowen Island. Tours are recommended as guides are trained in safety and well-versed in island history. While navigating the shoreline, you’ll be able to take a deep dive into the geological forces that created the Howe Sound, the Union Steamship era, the First Nation’s impact on Bowen Island history, industrialization and the rebirth of the region’s marine ecosystem.

Hiking Trails on Bowen Island

If you planning on a day trip of outdoor activities, the hiking trails on Bowen Island are close in proximity and are easily accessible from the ferry terminal. There are 3 hiking trails on Bowen Island – well… possibly 4, if you count the secret trail to the mastodon…more on that in just a bit.

bowen island day trip by foot

Dorman Point

Located within Crippen Regional Park, the trail to Dorman Point is one of the 2 easier hiking trails on Bowen island consisting of only 1 hour and an elevation gain of 105 meters. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a view of the cove, if you walk down the trail to your right when you reach the top, you’ll be able to access a better viewpoint unobstructed by trees. Dorman Point trail is a short one and best if you pair this with another hike like Killarney Lake or a longer hike up Mount Gardner.

the view from Dorman Point, one of the hiking trails on Bowen island

Killarney Lake

Killarney Lake is one of the easier hiking trails on Bowen Island. The scenic hiking trail that wraps around Killarney Lake offers the perfect reason to make a day trip out to peaceful Bowen Island. The Killarney Lake trail is an easy 2-hour hike with very minimal elevation gain.

discovering the hiking trails on Bowen Island

The scenic trail around Killarney Lake is worth doing as scenery changes with every turn. Make sure to pack some snacks, there are plenty of great picnic opportunities as you wander this trail!

Mount Gardner

For the intermediate hikers, Mount Gardner is essentially Bowen’s Everest. Except, not nearly as tall.

With an elevation of 719 meters, the challenging hike culminates with panoramic views – Vancouver to the south, Sunshine Coast to the north and Vancouver Island to the West. There are different trailheads and a variety of different routes you can take to the north of the summit.

Secret Bowen Island Mastodon

Feeling a little adventurous?

Artist Guthrie Gloag created a sculpture of a mastodon made out of driftwood at a secret location on Bowen Island. The sculpture, titled “ The Mastodon Project “, was created to mimic the mastodons that have been extinct ten to twelve thousand years ago, likely because of human pressures. Gloag, who was trained as a biologist, asks the public to “mourn” the mastodon and reflect on the animals living today that could be lost due to human impacts.

The Mastodon by artist Guthrie Gloag can be found on Bowen Island...If you can

We can’t tell you the exact location of this sculpture because that would just take away the fun. But do know that this hike is on the intermediate side.

A Well Deserved Treat

Need a break to refuel from crushing the near by hiking trails? Check out some of these places for a bite.

So many things to do on Bowen Island, plan the perfect day trip out to Bowen Island from Vancouver

Doc Morgan’s

On our way to Dorman Point hiking trail, we walked by Doc Morgan’s and admired the patio loungers sipping on their cold pints of beer. We decided that this was the spot to go after our quick hike to the top.

Doc Morgan’s is a gastropub serving pub classics like burgers and fries, fish and chips, and various types of share plates to choose from. Not to mention that the patio is the place to be during the summer months.

The upstairs and downstairs patio have views of the shore and nearby fun and games at the Doc Morgan’s lawn.

Branch on Bowen

After enjoying a few cold beers at Doc Morgan’s, head on over to Branch on Bowen for some ice cream before boarding the ferry back to Vancouver.

Branch on Bowen is a must-visit when you're on Bowen Island

Branch on Bowen is an ice cream parlour, taco shack and boutique gift shop on Bowen Island’s marina Pier. Didn’t have enough time at Artisan Square for souvenirs and shopping? No problem, Branch on Bowen sort of has it all to end your visit, whether you’re seeking a well-deserved ice cream or want to pick up an artisanally hand-crafted gift minutes before boarding your ferry back to the lower mainland.

Where Is Bowen Island?

Bowen Island is situated in Howe Sound and just 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) away from the mainland at its closest point. Regular ferry services by BC Ferries are available from Horseshoe Bay and semi-regular water taxi rides too – so you can access this magical place with ease.

How To Get To Bowen Island

One of the things I love about Bowen Island is its close proximity to the mainland. Bowen Island is a mere 20-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, making it one of the best getaways from Vancouver. If you’re short on time, Bowen is also a great choice for a day trip from Vancouver.

With BC Ferries running a mere 20-minute crossing from Horseshoe Bay to Snug Cove’s ferry terminal, you can choose whether to go as a foot passenger or with either bike or car in tow.

Before you embark on your journey, it’s a good idea to consult the Bowen Island ferry schedule . Ferries depart roughly once hourly but ensure you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to departure; otherwise, you may miss your boat and have to wait for the next departure. As times fluctuate with each season, double-check before planning your excursion.

Travelling To Bowen Island By Car

Traveling to Bowen Island is only a 20 minute journey on BC ferries via the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. Ferry departures occur every hour, and you can check out the Bowen Island ferry schedule here .

A return trip costs approximately $50 – 60 for one vehicle (less than 7 ft tall & 20ft long) with two passengers – although there is no charge when returning from your journey. All you need to do is join the queue and be ready for a smooth sail back home!

When traveling between Bowen Island and Vancouver, the ferry route does not require advanced bookings – you pay the fare at the terminal. To avoid long queues during peak summer seasons, make sure to arrive at least 30 minutes or more before departure. This way you can guarantee a spot on board so that your journey goes as smoothly as possible!

Travelling To Bowen Island Without A Car

Travelling to Bowen Island without a car? No problem! Ride the #250 Horseshoe Bay or #257 Horseshoe Bay Express buses from Downtown Vancouver and board the ferry as a foot passenger.

For those who do not intend to drive, the Cormorant Water Taxi offers both scheduled and private services from Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) to Bowen Island’s Snug Cove. To learn more about their transportation options, check out their website for details!

You won’t have to worry about transportation when you arrive at Snug Cove by ferry—it’s easy enough to explore the village, beaches and trails all within walking distance of the town. Or better yet, rent some bikes or scooters for even more exciting activities around this small island.

Much of the accommodation on Bowen Island requires a vehicle to get to, especially most Air Bnbs. Keep this in mind when you book accommodation. If you are not bringing a car I would recommend staying within walking distance of Snug Cove so you can easily get to shops and restaurants and bus stops to explore the island.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Bowen Island

It’s temperate climate makes Bowen Island a great destination to visit year-round and is enjoyed by locals from Vancouver throughout the year.

During summer, the long days and sunny weather make it a perfect spot for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and beach-going. This is also the busiest season and weekends are very popular for visitors.

During the low-seasons (fall, winter, and spring), things are generally less hectic, but there are still plenty of visitors. If you don’t mind a little rain, you can find lower accommodation prices and better availability in the off-season.

I personally think Spring and Fall are the perfect time to visit Bowen Island. You’ll experience less crowds and there are still clear sunny days without the heat.

Where To Stay On Bowen Island

After setting foot on Bowen Island, it’s common to fall in love with the peaceful and picturesque surroundings. And so if you’re looking for an extended stay, you’ll be pleased to know that there are a variety of vacation rentals and hotels available as well!

Artisan Suites

With the few options available to you, Artisan Suites on Bowen Island stands out as the premier resort for visitors. Offering stunning rooms that evoke comfort and relaxation; this boutique hotel is situated in the charming Artisan Square and features four suites that offer breathtaking views of Bowen’s gorgeous ocean and mountain scenery. Located close to Snug Cove, it is a perfect choice for travellers who don’t have a car or don’t want to carry heavy luggage.

Nectar Yoga Retreat

The Nectar Yoga Retreat is the ultimate escape to get away from it all. A tranquil atmosphere surrounded by trees, Nectar Yoga will revitalize your body and soul and provides you with a space that offers profound healing opportunities, both internally and externally.

The cottages feature comfortable beds, soft linens, fluffy pillows, and a reading window seat, all perfect for snuggling up with a loved one or a good book and a warm mug of tea. The cottage also has a covered porch made of warm cedar, which offers a great view of the property’s centrepiece: magnificent maple and alder grove trees.

Wildwood Cabins

Undoubtedly, one of the most exceptional accommodations you can find on Bowen Island is the Wildwood Cabins . Nestled among the trees, this collection of four rustic log cabins offers an unforgettable experience and the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of every day life.

I absolutely loved my stay at the Wildwood cabins during my trip to Bowen Island. The cabins are located in a quiet area, providing a chance for you to enjoy solitude and privacy, creating a truly magical experience.

The cabins themselves are equipped with everything you need. You can also take advantage of the wood fire barrel sauna onsite and morning yoga classes. A secret sunset viewpoint located on top of the ridge behind all four cabins makes this one-of-a kind getaway spot truly remarkable – you won’t find anything like it elsewhere on Bowen Island!

Wildwood cabins on Bowen Island

Camping On Bowen Island

Although Bowen Island appears to be a great location for camping near Vancouver, it’s important to note that all types of camping are prohibited on the island. There are no authorized campgrounds available, and wild camping is also not allowed. Keep in mind that if you’re intending to go hiking on Bowen Island, keep in mind that you can only go on a day hike, as camping is not permitted on Mount Gardner or anywhere else on the island.

Best Things To Do On Bowen Island

1. start the day with a yoga class.

A morning yoga session is an ideal way to slow down and take a pause! Bowen Island is renowned for its yoga and meditation retreats, none more so than the esteemed Nectar Yoga Retreat.

Nestled in the heart of nature, Nectar Yoga Retreat brings together an unforgettable overnight sojourn and intensive workshops for visitors seeking a comprehensive yoga and meditation experience. Classes are taught on Saturday and Sunday at the pier; it’s truly an unparalleled experience!

If you’re staying at Nectar Yoga on Bowen, then attending a class is included with your accommodation. If not, there’s still ample opportunity for yoga on this outstanding island – Wildwood Cabins offer daily classes too.

Even if yoga isn’t your thing, why not give it a try during your visit to Bowen Island?

2. Hike To Dorman Point

Want to experience some of Bowen Island’s most stunning views? If you’re visiting Bowen Island without a car, Crippen Regional Park is the perfect spot for a short hike. It’s a convenient, enjoyable journey that begins right near where the ferry docks at Snug Cove.

The hike to Dorman Point is a 2.4 km out-and-back trail that is an easy route with minimal elevation gain (112 m) and can be completed in just one hour!

From Snug Cove ferry terminal, walk along a boardwalk towards the left and cross over a bridge which will lead you by an expansive field on your right side with seascape and marina on your left. After entering into forest area make sure to go left at signposted junction that leads to Dorman Point. Prepare to be blown away by Howe Sound’s awe-inspiring views from the top!

3. Hike Up Mount Gardner

Mount Gardner stands alone as the quintessential Bowen Island hike and should be on everyone’s list of best hikes near Vancouver. If you’re seeking an energizing and invigorating hike, Mount Gardner is the perfect choice!

Not only is it one of the taller trails, but it’s also arguably the most difficult hike on the island. It boasts a vigorous 17-kilometer round trip with more than 700 meters of elevation gain – undoubtedly not for those who shy away from difficult adventures. However, the sublime vistas awaiting at the summit are truly worth it.

If you ascend to Mt Gardner’s summit, you’ll be rewarded with picturesque 360-degree views of Vancouver, The Sunshine Coast, Howe Sound and Vancouver Island!

Mount Gardner on Bowen Island at sunset overlooking Howe Sound.

4. Sample The Cider At Bowen Cider House

The Bowen Cider House is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the best of what Bowen Island has to offer. Located on Snug Cove, Bowen Cider House are a family-owned and operated craft cidery that produces traditional and varietal cider using apples hand-picked from their own orchards

The Cider House offers an array of artisanal ciders crafted from locally sourced fruit and honey. You can do a tasting of their three types of cider for $5 in the tasting room, and if you find one you like you can purchase a full bottle to drink on the patio.

The ciders on offer are Dry, Semi Dry and Semi-Sweet. My favourite was the sweet cider as I prefer a fruitier taste like those at Salt Spring Wild Cider . At present they don’t have a full service bar, but this is in the works!

With its relaxed atmosphere and stunning views of Howe Sound, The Bowen Island Cider House a great spot to unwind after a day exploring all that Bowen Island has to offer!

The Bowen Cider House is a must do on Bowen Island

5. Walk Around Killarney Lake

Seeking a slightly more lengthy hike than Dorman Point? Look no further than Killarney Lake! This 7.9 km loop is relatively flat with minimal elevation gain and you can complete the entire circle in just around two hours.

To begin your trip towards this magnificent lake, simply walk away from the ferry terminal at Snug Cove up past the marina and shops on Cardena Drive until you see a sign marking Crippen Regional Park; that is where your trailhead awaits.

6. Explore The Cape & Roger Curtis Lighthouse

Exploring Bowen Island presents a treasure trove of wonder and intrigue. And, tucked away in the island’s west side lies a tangible reminder of untouched beauty that simply cannot be missed.

If you’re planning a stay on Bowen Island, don’t miss out on the opportunity to explore its west side. The Cape of this remarkable place is still quite pristine. Make your initial stop Roger Curtis Lighthouse to take in the breathtaking views, before moving on to Tunstall Bay for sunset.

As you approach the Cape, a multitude of roads will be seen leading to multiple plots of land but with no homes in sight – it may seem as if one has discovered an abandoned community; however, this area is currently being developed with numerous ten-acre lots already sold! Thus, houses and estates are soon expected here.

As the Cape is not accessible without your own car, many visitors miss out on the opportunity to explore this serene area. That is why I urge you to take a drive out there if you are visiting Bowen Island with a car; discovering its tranquility will be worth every mile!

Cape of Bowen Island

7. Tunstall Bay

Tunstall Bay offers one of the most picturesque sunset views in British Columbia! Found along Bowen Island’s western shore, you can bask in the beauty of Cape and Roger Curtis Lighthouse before admiring an unforgettable red-orange sky at dusk.

Submerge yourself in exploration, or simply kick back at the beach and marvel as the sun fades into the Salish Sea.

Getting there is easy—simply hop aboard the #280 Bluewater bus or take your car; either way it’ll be approximately 10 to 15 minutes away from your destination.

8. Wander The Many Beaches On Bowen Island

Bowen Island is home to over 40 public beaches and places to access the water, providing plenty of choices for beachgoers.

There are numerous pebbly and rocky beaches on Bowen Island, with the exception of Sandy Beach that, just like its name, is sandy! Although not all beaches are swim-friendly, some do offer wheelchair access and public restrooms.

Bring along a few snacks from any of the local restaurants for a memorable picnic experience. If you’re looking for something extra special, look no further than Pebbly Beach – only 15 minutes away by foot via Snug Cove and considered by some as the best beach on Bowen Island.

For an unforgettable sunset experience, head to any one of the beaches on the west side of Bowen Island.

9. Go Cider Tasting At Riley’s Cidery

Riley’s Cidery is a small, locally-owned gem just minutes away from the village. With its 30 year old orchard as the source for all their delicious ciders, it has recently been taken over by new owners who have made it into something truly special! I am so excited to go and experience what this amazing place has to offer next time I’m in town – open Thursday through Sunday!

10. Go Kayaking Or Stand Up Paddle Board

Enjoy the beauty of Bowen Island by kayak or stand up paddle board. With its untouched landscapes and majestic views, you’ll feel like you’ve ventured miles away from civilization.

Both kayaks and paddle boards can be rented from Bowen Island Sea Kayaking . Located in the marina, they offer single and double kayaks as well as SUPs to give you the perfect way to explore this stunning destination.

But if you have your own gear in tow, there are plenty of launch spots available where you can explore at your leisure.

When it comes to kayak trips near Vancouver, this is definitely one that should not be missed!

11. Copper Spirit Distillery

Nestled just off the main road near Snug Cove is the Copper Spirit Distillery , a delightful boutique craft distillery owned and operated by Miguel and Candice Kabantsov.

Here you can tantalize your taste buds with one-of-a-kind handcrafted spirits produced right here on Bowen Island by Miguel himself.

At the tasting room, you can sample an array of small cocktails crafted from their vodka, gin and rye. And because it’s in accordance with BC Liquor Law, each person is allowed to try up to 3 different drinks.

My favourite was the “CSD Gin & Tonic” which is the distillery’s original take on this classic summer drink. The menu also offers non-alcoholic options.

Copper Spirit Distillery is one of the top things to do in Bowen Island.

12. Explore Fairy Fen

Explore the magical trails at Fairy Fen Reserve. Fairy Fen is a rare, diverse, and mostly undisturbed wetland on Bowen Island that is fed by ground or surface water.

Many unique types of plants, including Labrador Tea, bog St. John’s-wort, and bog cranberry, as well as various sedges and mosses, are protected by Fairy Fen. Pileated Woodpeckers are often heard in the trees, Sharp-shinned Hawks have been spotted in the area, and Bald Eagles are known to fly above the fen.

13. Shop At Artisan Square

Nestled against the picturesque backdrop of mountains and sparkling ocean, Artisan Square is a mere 5 minute drive from Snug Cove. This vibrant community boasts an array of boutique shops that are brimming with local artisan goods.

Artisan Eats Café is a great place for breakfast or lunch. They serve homemade salads and sandwiches, as well as a number of daily specials, it’s also a great option for a coffee break. Afterwards, stop by Cocoa West Chocolatier for some handmade chocolates. They also serve delicious chocolate cake (my favourite) and gelato which is perfect on a hot day.

Head to Cocoa West on Bowen Island to savour your sweet tooth.

14. Watch The Sunset

The sunsets in British Columbia are unbeatable, and Bowen Island is no exception. Take in Bowen Island’s beauty from the Roger Curtis Lighthouse, Pebbly Beach or Wildwood Cabins.

If staying at the Wildwood Cabins, they have a great lookout just above the cabins that looks out across Howe Sound and the Sunshine Coast. This is my favourite sunset viewpoint on Bowen Island and definitely not one to miss!

No matter where you choose, make sure to dress for whichever season you’re experiencing – staying cozy during winter and taking advantage of summer rays while enjoying a breathtaking sunset.

The lookout point above the Wildwood cabins is one of the perfect places to watch the sunset on Bowen Island.

15. Check Out The Local Art Galleries

Art is certainly not hard to find in the tiny village of Snug Cove. Whether it’s photography, paintings, or thoughtfully crafted goods, you’ll be able to stumble upon something that resonates with your individual style during a stroll around town.

Around Snug Cove, you’ll find a plethora of stunning galleries. Specifically Arts Pacific Gallery at Artisan Square which showcases an array of work from numerous local artists.

Make sure to stop by Catching Stars Gallery, which is nestled just off the main road. Don’t be fooled by its inconspicuous facade though; this gallery boasts an incredible collection of handcrafted artwork including sculptures, paintings, candles and soaps that can give your home a truly special touch.

The VERY BEST things to do on Bowen Island, BC

The small island of Bowen Island British Columbia is the ideal getaway for a day or a weekend from downtown Vancouver.

Even though Vancouver is a very green city complete with beaches and a massive park ( Stanley Park ), every now and again it’s nice to escape this and find somewhere even greener.

In those times I like to plan a getaway to Bowen Island, an island you can reach in under an hour from downtown and somewhere I’ve visited many times throughout the 6+ years of living in Vancouver, both solo and with friends and family.

Below, I’ve put together my guide to the best things to do on Bowen Island.

Bowen Island is covered in forest and has tonnes of little coves and beaches just waiting to be explored. Some of the best things to do on Bowen Island include hiking peaks like Mt Gardner, kayaking around the coves, or just enjoying some great foot at Barcelona restaurant (which specialises in tapas!).

For several months of the year, you can spot whales off the shore and the island invites you to relax and slow down from city life.

The best thing is, it’s not even far from the city! Where is Bowen Island you ask? It’s just a 20-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver and is an island in the Howe Sound in British Columbia, Canada.

Despite the fact the Bowen Island population is relatively small at just over 3,000, there are plenty of things to do in Bowen Island.

Looking for more things to do in Vancouver and nearby? Check out my Vancouver travel guides which are full of information on the best things to do in Vancouver, the best Vancouver restaurants, and detailed guides for each of the main neighborhoods.

Best things to do on Bowen Island

Whether you’re looking for Bowen Island hiking trails, kayaking on Bowen Island or visiting some of the artisan producers, here are some of the best Bowen Island activities, including an island secret hidden in the forest! The hard part is fitting in these “what to do in Bowen Island” activities.

I’ve also included the directions for some of the best Bowen Island hikes below so you know where to go in Bowen Island during your trip.

This Bowen Island map includes the Bowen Island attractions and businesses listed below so you can get your bearings and locate these things to do on Bowen Island.

Watch the sunset on Bowen Island

sunset bowen island wildwood cabins

Many of the Bowen Island trails lead to a great sunset-watching spot.

Whether you’re down by the Roger Curtis Lighthouse or Pebbly Beach, or enjoying a sunset around the back of Wildwood Cabins (I think this is the best of Bowen Island viewpoints!), make sure you wrap up warm in winter or stay out in summer, to enjoy a Bowen Island sunset.

Hike to Dorman Point

This Bowen Island hike is a nice quick and easy hike with rewarding views of the Howe Sound. Dorman Point is located in Crippen Regional Park on Bowen Island and the trail starts from near where the ferry drops you off in Snug Cove, Bowen Island.

Please don’t do what I did and not realise there was a path and end up hiking along the road to the top. It’s not as pretty…

The view from the top of Dorman Point is a bit obstructed by trees. You’ll get a better view by following a short trail downhill to the right.

From the Snug Cove ferry terminal, follow a boardwalk towards the left. You’ll soon cross over a bridge and pass by a large field to your right with the sea and a small marina to your left. Carry on until you enter the forest. After entering the forest go left at the signposted junction to Dorman Point.

From here you’ll steadily climb before turning to the right. Here it becomes a steeper series of switchbacks. When you read a road, head left and walk past the park sign up the hill. This is the steepest part of the trail but it’s short! Soon the trail levels out and you’re at Dorman Point!

To get a better view walk towards the right, over the rocks and look for a path that heads downhill. Carefully take this path and make your way down some rocks. Within a few minutes, you’ll be at a small clearing with great views of Howe Sound.

AllTrails is my go-to hiking app for finding, planning, and navigating while I’m out on the trails. With offline maps on AllTrails+ you can be confident you’re still on the right track, even without mobile signal.

Enjoy some Bowen Island yoga

nectar yoga review

Something about Bowen Island makes you want to slow down and soak in every moment. And taking a morning yoga class is the perfect way to do this.

You can find yoga classes throughout Bowen Island. I’ve personally done yoga on Bowen when staying at the old Nectar Yoga on Bowen Island. Their new location looks even dreamier and the yoga classes are included in the price of your accommodation.

You can also find yoga on Bowen Island at the Yoga Loft at Wildwood Cabins which hosts yoga classes daily (an extra fee applies).

Hike to Killarney Lake

killarney lake things to do on bowen island

Another option for hiking Bowen Island is to hike to Killarney Lake from Snug Cove. It’s longer but easy, and pretty much flat. Killarney Lake is beautiful (and pretty frozen when I visited!) and the area alone makes a Bowen Island day trip worth it.

To hike to Killarney Lake on Bowen Island, walk up the road away from the Snug Cove ferry terminal and past the marina towards the shops. To get to the trailhead, turn right onto the first street – Cardena Drive – and walk about 100m to a sign on the left-hand side of the road which marks the beginning of Crippen Regional Park.

The trail heads into the forest and reaches a crossroad. Carry on straight and check out the lagoon between the trees on your right.

Here you’ll intersect with Miller Road. Cross the road and continue along the ‘Hatchery Trail’. When you reach a 3-way junction turn right.

Continue straight through the meadow and across a wooden bridge to another 3-way junction where you go left towards a fork in the trail. Both of these trails lead to Killarney Lake so pick one and come back on the other!

Hike Mount Gardner on Bowen Island

mt gardner, bowen island

If you want to do a big hike during your visit to Bowen Island then this is the one to do! The view from the top of Mount Gardner is of Howe Sound, the Sunshine Coast, West Vancouver and Burrard Inlet.

Mt Gardner is the highest mountain and one of the top Bowen Island tourist attractions.

This is the toughest of the hikes on Bowen Island and you’ll need around 4-6 hours to complete it. The trail is quite long and you’ll gain over 700 m in elevation.

There are several trailheads including one which is a 3 km hike through Crippen Regional Park and starts as if you were going to Killarney Lake. From there it’s all uphill but the views are worth the climb!

Bowen Island Kayaking

things to do on bowen island

There are so many beautiful places to kayak in and around Vancouver and Bowen Island is one of them. Kayaking Bowen Island is beautiful and you’ll feel many miles away from the city when you hop into a kayak. Unlike a kayak trip around Vancouver, you won’t see many skyrise buildings on this paddle!

Bowen Island Sea Kayaking rents single and double kayaks in the Bowen Island marina. It’s really the only place for Bowen Island kayak rentals and they also have stand-up paddleboards available.

Relax on the Bowen Island beaches and in the parks

things to do on bowen island

One of the best Bowen Island beaches is Tunstall Bay, but my favourite is the beaches on Bowen Island’s east coast or Sandy Beach, Bowen Island.

The water might not be the warmest, but on a hot summer’s day it’s just right. Pick up a few snacks from the Bowen Island restaurants listed below and enjoy a picnic.

Be sure to check out Pebbly Beach, Bowen Island too; it’s just a 15 minute walk from Snug Cove on Bowen Island and is regarded by some as the best beach on Bowen Island.

Visit The Cape on Bowen Island

things to do on bowen island

Most visitors to Bowen Island tend to stick to the east side of the island. If you’re spending longer than a day on Bowen Island then make time to head over to the west side. The Cape on Bowen Island is very untouched at the moment (although there’s evidence that this may change over the next few years).

We had great fun exploring the Roger Curtis Bowen Island Lighthouse and walking over to Pebbly Beach. Time your visit to the beach for sunset and you’ll probably never want to leave!

Find the secret Bowen Island Mastodon (no longer there)

bowen island mastadon

As of March 2022 – the mastadon has been removed by the artist.

Still wondering what to see in Bowen Island? Here’s an island secret!

Deep in the forest on Bowen Island is a gigantic mastodon sculpture. Artist, Guthrie Gloag built this massive sculpture out of driftwood and then hid it in the forest. He says is a symbol of conservation and a reminder of the dangers of climate change and environmental destruction.

The whereabouts of this sculpture is a closely guarded secret so if you’re wondering where to find the mastodon you’ll have to hunt for the Guthrie Gloag mastodon location yourself.

What to do on Bowen Island without a car

If you’re planning on visiting Bowen Island on foot or by bike, you’ll be glad to know there are plenty of things to do on Bowen Island without a car.

Pretty much everything listed above can be reached without a car, either by using the bus, bike or on foot.

The more difficult part of the island to reach is the Cape of Bowen though you can get here by bus or hitchhiking on Bowen.

You can do most Bowen Island hikes, including Killarney Lake and Dorman Point straight from the ferry terminal.

Where to eat on Bowen Island & drink!

the snug cafe bowen island

For such a small island there are some great places to eat and stock up on hiking treats. Here’s where to eat during your Bowen Island getaway.

Grab your morning coffee from The Snug

The Snug is basically a Bowen Island institution and I consider popping in here for a coffee or lunch one of the best Bowen Island things to do.

Locals and tourists pop in to grab their coffees, breakfast bagels and tasty lunches throughout the day and it seems as though it’s never not busy.

I picked up a tasty beetroot burger that I’m set on recreating one of these days – it was so good I even had it the second time I visited Bowen too!

Eat Italian at Tuscany

This Bowen Island restaurant is the one I visited when staying at Nectar Yoga on Bowen. Tuscany,  Bowen Island specialises in Italian food and they make a delicious pizza – undoubtedly the best Bowen Island pizza.

That’s likely because they even have a wood-fired oven for their pizzas. If pizza isn’t your thing (what?!) then there are some delicious looking pasta dishes on the menu too.

Eat Spanish at Barcelona

Spanish food more your thing? Head next door to Barcelona and indulge in some tapas with a tasty glass of red. We stopped here after catching the ferry to Bowen Island on a Friday night and LOVED the tapas dishes on offer; especially the patatas bravas.

Just remember to head out for dinner pretty early. Restaurants on the island close by 8 or 9 pm depending on the season and you don’t want to miss out!

Refuel after hiking at Branch & Butter

Branch & Butter  is one of the first places you’ll see as you pull into the ferry terminal on Bowen Island. The shop has a bright pink sign and serves some delicious treats.

They serve gourmet toasts and ice cream using bread from Birds and the Beets in Gastown, Vancouver and the delicious ice cream made at Earnest Ice Cream!

Branch & Butter is seasonal and reopens in April so plan your visit to Bowen Island after then!

Cocktails at Copper Spirit Distillery Bowen Island

copper spirit gin bowen island

On a recent day trip with friends, we stopped off at Copper Spirit gin distillery on Bowen Island and I loved it!

The distillery has a large tasting room and you can try 1/2oz cocktails made using their gins. It’s almost like getting a cocktail flight and the prices (cocktails cost $5) were reasonable too. Highly recommend!

Bowen Island Pub

While there are a few Bowen Island pubs, the aptly named Bowen Island Pub is easily the best and most popular. It’s just up the hill from the ferry terminal and serves great food in a buzzing atmosphere.

If you’ve been on a hike then refuelling at this pub on Bowen Island is a great idea. They also serve beers from the Bowen Island brewery which you’ve got to try when you visit Bowen Island!

rileys cidery bowen island things to do

Cider on Bowen Island

If Cider is more your style than beers and cocktails, then be sure to check out the Bowen Island Cider House or Riley’s Cidery.

These are two great locations on Bowen where you can sample and purchase locally-made cider.

Where to shop on Bowen Island

things to do on bowen island

If you’re planning a day trip to Bowen Island, make sure to stop by these shops full of goods from local artisans and creators.

Right next door to Branch & Butter is the cute boutique store: Branch 01. This shop features Canadian made gifts and homewares. Like Branch & Butter, this is seasonal too. Right now they’re collating their 2018 collection so watch this space!

Artisan Square

Take a stroll to Artisan Square which houses a multitude of galleries showcasing the works of local artists and artisans. There are boutique shops, delicious food outlets and even a spa for some extra island relaxation.

You can reach Artisan Square by heading up the main road out of Snug Cove and turning left on Artisan Lane.

The best things to do on Bowen Island, BC

Here’s your complete guide to what to do on Bowen Island, including how to get there and where to stay!

How to get from Vancouver to Bowen Island

things to do on Bowen Island

If you’re wondering how to get to Bowen Island you’re in luck as it’s super easy from downtown Vancouver.

Getting to Bowen Island from Vancouver is so easy. It’s just a short, 20-minute ferry with BC Ferries from Horseshoe Bay to Snug Cove where the Bowen Island ferry terminal is. You can either take your car, or your bike, or go on as a foot passenger.

Ferries to Bowen Island leave roughly once an hour but you can see the full Bowen Island ferry schedule here . Make sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure otherwise you won’t be allowed to board and will have to wait for the next one. Bowen Island ferry times change depending on the season so make sure to check in advance.

The Bowen Island ferry cost depends on whether you’re driving, walking or cycling. Per passenger, the ferry costs $10.45 in winter (usually around $12.50 in summer), and it’s about $30 for a car (again, slightly more in summer) from Horseshoe Bay to Bowen Island.

A journey for the two of you in a car will cost around $60. The ferry is free from Bowen Island to Vancouver so it’s not too expensive but expect queues if you’re travelling in the summer or on nice weekends.

Also, if you’re a BC local, I highly recommend getting the BC Ferries Experience Card as this will save you a lot of money on your BC Ferries Bowen Island sailings!

Bowen Island water taxi – no longer runs to Bowen

Where to stay on bowen island.

wildwood cabins bowen island

There’s so much choice when it comes to Bowen Island accommodation and it can be hard to choose. I’ve stayed at two different places on Bowen Island now and highly recommend them both.

The Wildwood Cabins ( Cabin 1 | Cabin 2 | Cabin 4 ) are absolutely gorgeous, reasonably priced, have onsite morning yoga and are ideal for a cosy weekend getaway.

I highly recommend these Bowen Island cabins I have stayed there several times and dream of going back.

I also loved my stay at Nectar Yoga Bowen Island B&B . Whilst this was before they moved location, I’m 100% sure their accommodation is just as gorgeous (if not better!)

You could also stay at one of these Bowen Island cabin rentals on Airbnb.

Bowen Island hotels

There aren’t a lot of choices when it comes to finding a Bowen Island hotel, most accommodations on Bowen are cabins or B&Bs.

If you must stay in a hotel then your best option is Artisan Suites on Bowen which has beautiful rooms some with balconies and is also one of the best places to stay on Bowen Island.

Camping on Bowen Island

While Bowen Island may seem like the perfect place for camping near Vancouver, camping in all forms is prohibited on Bowen Island apart from in one area which is marine access only.

There is only one Bowen Island campground and you are not allowed to wild camp. It’s believed this is mostly due to the risk of fires starting, and the trash being left behind. The only campsite is marine/boat-in access only at Apodaca Park.

If you’re planning on hiking on Bowen Island, be aware that’ll it’ll have to be a day hike as you cannot camp on Mount Gardner, or do Bowen Island camping elsewhere apart from Apodaca.

Update January 2024: Metro Vancouver bought land on Bowen Island and plans to turn it into a park to allow camping on Bowen Island though there is no date set for this. The community on the island are currently fighting these plans and have raised a lot of money in order to do so, so Bowen Island camping may remain a pipedream.

Final thoughts on what to do on Bowen Island Vancouver

Hopefully, this has answered some of your questions about what is there to do in Bowen Island! Have a great time!

If you’re looking for Bowen Island what to do ideas, you’ll hopefully have found plenty above. From the beautiful coastline and beaches Bowen Island has to offer to the shops, food and drink there is loads to see on this beautiful island.

Whether you’re planning a day trip or a weekend away, you’re sure to have a relaxing time.

The price is $11.70 per person and $44.85 per car. Even if you take a car, you will still pay for every person in the car! You will only be charged once as the ferry is free from Snug Cove (Bowen Island) to Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver).

These ferries are non-reservable so you just need to turn up at least 15 minutes before the ferry departure to get a ticket.

More hiking on Bowen Island

Bowen Island is home to amazing hiking trails ! Some locals make their way over to Bowen Island just for the hiking, and we don’t blame them – Bowen Island is beautiful!

Mt Gardner – One of the more rewarding hikes is the challenging trail up to Mt Gardner. It takes 7 hours to complete this hike and although it’s rated Intermediate, it does require a lot of climbing. The views are amazing though!

Dorman Point – Dorman Point is a 1-hour hike up to a viewpoint overlooking the Howe Sound. It’s 30 minutes steep hike up to the viewpoint and it is also rated Easy. It may be a great option to add to your day!

Is Bowen Island worth a day trip?

Yes ! A Bowen Island day trip from Vancouver is worth it if you love exploring British Colombia. With the ferry only being 20 minutes, it’s a quick and easy day trip away from the city.

After visiting ourselves, we would recommend visiting Bowen Island in the summer months to make the most out of your day and get the best weather. Although the island is lovely in the spring and autumn too!

There are other places to visit on a day trip, such as Deep Cove or False Creek, however, Bowen Island is unique and also worth checking out.

Alternatively, there’s a 3-Hour Bowen Island Boat Cruise you can do from Granville, Vancouver!

Things to do on bowen island: hiking, restaurants, accommodations & more.

Viewpoint from hike in Bowen Island

Although I was raised some 3,000 km from Bowen Island, my mom spent a lot of time on Bowen Island. She lived in Vancouver during high school and university, and her best friend – my Aunt Mary – had a cottage on the island. They spent many warm summer nights on Bowen, and my mom always spoke so fondly of it.

Over the years, I’ve made many trips to Vancouver and spent the last year living in the city. Being so close to Vancouver, I’ve made many trips to Bowen Island and still love going back each time.

So I thought I’d share my favourite things to do on Bowen Island, as well as some tips for visiting.

Getting to Bowen Island

Getting around bowen island.

  • Accommodation

Things to do on Bowen Island

  • Hikes on Bowen Island

Visiting Bowen Island as a Day Trip? Bowen Island can definitely be visited in a single day. Just be mindful of the ferry times to ensure you have enough time on the island (and are able to catch the last ferry back to Vancouver).

Ferry leaving Snug Cove on Bowen Island

This post may contain affiliate links. If you make a purchase through one of these links, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. Your support is much appreciated! You can learn more by reading my full disclosure .

The only way to get to Bowen Island is by taking the ferry from Horseshoe Bay. The ferry is about 20 minutes long and is very easy to use. You can reserve a ticket ahead of time, though I typically just show up and buy my ticket in person.

Getting to Horseshoe Bay

By Bus : It’s super convenient to get to Horseshoe Bay without a car. You can catch Bus #257 at the corner of Seymour St and W Georgia St, and then it’s about 45 minutes until Horseshoe Bay. The bus terminal is a 5-minute walk to the ferry terminal. At the terminal, you can purchase a ticket before boarding. See directions here.

By Car : The Google Maps directions to Horseshoe Bay are accurate and easy to follow. Once you approach the ferry terminal, be mindful of the overhead signs, as they will direct you on where to go. Each lane has an attendant (kind of like at the US-Canada border) who can sell you a ticket. Once you’ve paid, they will tell you which lane to drive in.

Alternatively, you can also drive to Horseshoe Bay, park near the ferry terminal and then take the ferry as a passenger. My friends and I did this today so we wouldn’t have to worry about parking on the island (plus it’s cheaper to cross as pedestrians).

Once you’re on the ferry, the rest is easy. There is a pedestrian area with bathrooms, seating and food (people in cars can also go up there to wait the duration of the ferry ride).

Note : You don’t need a return ticket. Since there is only one way on and off the island, all tickets to Bowen Island are return trips (and no need to keep your ticket – you don’t need to show it on the way back).

Ferry boat leaving Vancouver for Vancouver Island

Okay, now that you’re on Bowen Island, how do you get around? For the most part, Bowen Island is very walkable. The ferry dock is at Snug Cove and it’s a very short walk to the visitor’s center and most restaurants and accommodation options. Likewise, downtown is close to the Killarney Lake hike and reasonably close to the Mount Gardner hike.

Parking : The only place where parking can be a little tricky is around Snug Cove. Some streets allow parking up to 2 or 3 hours, while other streets permit parking up to 12 hours. Parking is very limited, especially on sunny summer Saturdays. If there isn’t any available parking, there’s an alternative parking lot on the west side of the island and you can then take a shuttle back to area Snug Cove. You can find more information about parking here .

Bowen Island Municipal Bus : There are three buses that service Bowen Island, all originating in Snug Cove. You can see the routes and schedules here .

Tip : For day trips, it is way easier to leave your car at home. You can either take the bus to Horseshoe Bay (what I usually do) or park at the Horseshoe Bay parking lot. From there, the ferry are really easy for pedestrians, and downtown Bowen is easy to navigate on foot. Save yourself the hassle (and cost) of finding parking!

Bowen Island Accommodation

It is totally feasible to do a Bowen Island day trip and avoid staying overnight. However, there’s enough to do on Bowen that a weekend getaway would be a lot of fun. It also allows you to easily catch a sunrise / sunset. All that to say, here are some Bowen Island accommodation options if you’d like to stay overnight.

Nectar Yoga Retreat

If I didn’t have family living on the island, this is 100% where I would want to stay. The rooms are in cozy A-frame cabins, there’s a giant glass dome for yoga classes and an awesome lounge and patio. The theme is very modern-meets-rustic: white and black fixtures and lots of exposed wood.

English Rose Cottage

This is a modern and bright floral-inspired cottage in the heart of the island. It’s a short drive from downtown and very close to the Bowen Island Ecological Reserve.

Bowen Island Lodge

This is a more traditional option; the rooms look very much like what you’d expect from a lodge that caters to conferences. But, it does have an amazing view of the mountains and has a great downtown location.

Artisan Suites on Bowen

This is a cozy hotel with a beautiful view of Snug Cove. It’s downtown and within walking distance of shops and restaurants (plus it also has its own restaurant).

VRBO / Airbnb

There are a few properties on VRBO that look incredible. For example, this waterfront cabin with panoramic views has the most amazing view of Howe Sound. Likewise, this oceanfront cottage has a private beach and one of the best balconies I’ve seen on a listing.

In addition, Bowen Island has some wonderful Airbnb properties too. Specifically, the Sugar Cube Cabin and the Wildwoods Cabin look awesome. They’re both cozy, wooden cabins nestled in the forest.

Camping on Bowen Island

Camping is not permitted on Bowen Island for a variety of reasons (including a re-wilding effort and sensitive ecology). You can read more about it in this post: Camping on Bowen Island – Is it allowed?

There are several things to do on Bowen Island, and what you do can be tailored to the type of day you want to have: active or relxing.

Crippen Regional Park

Crippen Regional Park is a pretty park near Snug Cove and provides a few options for casually strolling through lush forest. It’s gem is Killarney Lake, which you can hike around for some beautiful views. I’ve gone into specifics of the hike in the following section (Bowen Island Hikes).

Crippen extends from Killarney Lake to the coast near Snug Cove. Around here, you’ll find Dorman Point. It has a great view of the ocean and West Vancouver. It’s a short walk from town and increases about 100 m in elevation.

View of Killarney Lake in Crippen Regional Park, on Bowen Island

Mount Gardener

This is the toughest hike on Bowen Island. There are a few routes to the peak, depending on which side of the island you’re hiking from. In general, it will take a minimum of 4 hours to complete (unless you’re a trail runner). I’ve detailed more about its specifics in the following section (Bowen Island Hikes).

Tunstall Bay

Tunstall Bay is a sandy and rocky beach known for having some beautiful sunsets. You can swim at the beach, though I haven’t gone in much because of how rock it is (maybe bring some waterproof sandals). Besides swimming and sunset spotting, you can walk along the shoreline. If you walk left there are some cool rocks and a washed up tree stump that are pretty cool. You’ll see lots of moss, seaweed, starfish and other salty vegetation – classic west coast.

Rocky shoreline and dock at Tunstall Bay Beach on Bowen Island

Bowen Bay Beach

Bowen Bay another popular beach spot. It’s a little north of Tunstall Bay, so it has a similar view and it also good for sunsets. Again, it’s popular for swimming and sunbathing (though I think it’s a little pebbly for that, but what do I know).

Bowen Island Golf Course

I don’t like golfing, so I’ve never done this but. But Bowen Island Golf Course was voted as Canada’s hidden gem of the year in 2014 , so I figure it deserved a spot on the list. This 9-hole golf course is carved from a West Coast rainforest featuring magnificent views of Howe Sound.

Bowen Island Sea Kayaking

Sea kayaking is a popular activity in the summer. Bowen Island Sea Kayaking offers rentals and tours, allowing you to explore the coastline’s nooks and crannies. I haven’t done this tour, but the full day trip to Pasley Island looks beautiful.

View of Snug Cove on Bowen Island

Bowen Tour on E-bikes

From spring to early autumn, Bowen eBikes offers e-bike rentals from Snug Habour. This is a great way to explore the island if you’re arriving without a car. The island isn’t very big, so you can see a lot of it with an e-bike over the course of a single day. Though I wouldn’t recommend leaving the eBike unattended while you’re hiking. Note that you can’t make same-day reservations with Bowen eBikes – you need to reserve in advance.

Art Galleries

This island over indexes on creativity. With a population of less than 50,000, it was recently identified as the fourth most artistic community in Canada for its artistic work.

There are a few art galleries and artists’ studios scattered across the island, each featuring work from local artists. Gilt Gallery and Catching Stars Gallery are both located near Snug Cove. Lisa Gardner, Anju Jane, Andrew Plewes and Mary Neyes have studios throughout the island as well.

Boats in the harbour at Bowen Island

Bowen Island Museum and Archives

Bowen Island Museum and Archives have collections about the history of Bowen Island. There’s a collection on the Indigenous history on the island, a collection on how Bowen Island because an artist hotspot, a collection on logging and finally a collection on the explosives factory at Tunstall Bay. There are also archives if you want to do even more digging into specific moments in the past.

Pubs & Restaurants

There are two pubs I’ll recommend: Bowen Island Pub and Barcelona Tapas & Wine Bar . I also really like Artisan Eats Café & Fine Foods for breakfast foods. I haven’t been to Rustique Bistro French Kitchen + Bar , but it has a beautiful patio and the food on their website looks amazing.

Bowen Island Hikes

Mount gardner.

If you’re coming to Bowen Island specifically to hike, you will definitely be climbing Mount Gardner. Standing at 727 m, Mount Gardner is the highest peak on the island and provides excellent views of Howe Sound and all of the surrounding mountains.

There are a few trails to reach Mount Gardner, depending on the side of the island you’re on.

  • This is the most exact route to the top of Mount Gardner .
  • This route is a less direct loop to the top .
  • This is the route that starts on the west side .

The hike isn’t difficult by BC standards, but it’s definitely tricky. It’s mostly a well-marked trail, however, there are a few sections that were a little unclear. The hike itself isn’t too long (about 10 km) and there are no extremely steep sections, but the gradual climb of 700 m in elevation gain will leave you winded and your hamstrings sore.

I just did this hike again today and one thing I’ll add is that you should only do it on a clear day. We had a lot of fog and there was absolutely no view, unfortunately. Disappointing after so much effort! Please enjoy this stock photo from the hike, as my photos are all of fog, fog and more fog.

Woman standing on the top of Mount Gardner on Bowen Island as the sun is setting

Killarney Lake

Killarney Lake is the heart of Crippen Regional Park, a short walk from downtown Bowen. This is a great beginner / intermediate hike. The route is 8 km with less than 200 m of elevation gain. Killarney Lake itself is quite beautiful, lined with rolling hills and tons of vegetation. Here is the route .

13 Unique & Fun Things to do on Bowen Island, BC

From cozy cabins and breathtaking hikes to art galleries and unique shops, there really is no shortage of things to do on Bowen Island, the only island municipality belonging to Metro Vancouver.

This compact island (which is only 12km long and 6km wide) has long been the go-to spot for Vancouverites to escape the chaos of the city, with an abundance of pristine nature, well-marked trails, and cozy activities to take your mind off life’s most taxing stressors.

Located just a 20 minute ferry ride away from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver , this beautiful gem in Howe Sound is one of our favourite day trip adventures… and if you’re looking for an amazing day out without a car, then it’s about to become one of yours too.

Wondering what Bowen Island has to offer? In this post, we’ll be sharing the top things to do on Bowen Island, whether you’re looking for adventure, culture, or quirky little shops.

bowen island day trip by foot

Hike up to Mount Gardner

One of the best things to do on Bowen Island is hiking, and if you’re up for a challenge, why not tackle the most rewarding hike that Bowen has to offer? We’re of course talking about the hike up Mount Gardner.

This picturesque hike may be one of the more challenging adventures to tackle on Bowen, but those who brave the 17km roundtrip journey are treated to serene views over West Vancouver, the Burrard Inlet, Howe Sound and the Sunshine Coast. After all, this is the tallest mountain on the island, standing at 714m elevation.

There are a few trails that take you up, but the most popular route goes via Krippen Regional Park and the scenic Killarney Lake.

Learn more about the trail and route here.

Walk around Killarney Lake

Even if you’re not able to do the full journey up to Mount Gardner, visiting Killarney Lake and opting for the (much easier) roundtrip loop here is definitely a worthwhile Bowen Island must-do… especially due to its convenient location in Krippen Regional Park, whose entrance is steps away from the ferry terminal.

Doing the entirety of the 9km Killarney Lake Loop Trail takes about 2.5 hours, but it’s a relatively flat and easy path, with idyllic views every step of the way.

Learn more about the trail (and others on Bowen) here.

Hike up to the Dorman Point Look-out

Another great outdoorsy activity on Bowen Island (again in Krippen Regional Park) is the hike to the Dorman Point Look-Out.

This relatively short 2km hike takes only an hour roundtrip, and while it’s steep in parts, it’s a much less gruelling alternative to the famous Mount Gardner hike.

Once at the top, you get magnificent views that can stretch as far as Vancouver Island when the weather conditions are right. Not a bad reward for only an hour’s work!

Go kayaking or stand up paddle boarding

For those more into watersports than hiking, one of the best outdoorsy things to do on Bowen Island is kayaking… or stand up paddle boarding, for those blessed with balance.

Don’t have equipment of your own? Don’t worry! Bowen Island Kayaking is conveniently located at Snug Cove, right by the ferry terminal, and offers a variety of rentals whether you’re looking for singles or doubles. They also have a super simple online reservation system so you can book your rentals in advance (a necessity during peak periods).

For those in search of a more guided experience, they also have tours and lessons…. some of which even take place at special times like sunset or during the Full Moon! See more on their website here.

bowen island day trip by foot

Go on an e-bike tour

Another great way to explore Bowen Island is via e-bike, especially if you want to cover a lot of ground in a short span of time.

The aptly named Bowen eBikes offers this surface on the island, with rates starting at $48 for two hours. These bikes make exploring an absolute breeze, and most conveniently, they can be picked up and dropped off at their main office just 20m away from the ferry terminal!

bowen island day trip by foot

Catch sunset from Tunstall Bay

If you’re lucky enough with your timing, then another amazing thing to do in Bowen Island is stay and enjoy the sunset!

While the island has a variety of stunning viewpoints to choose from, Tunstall Bay is perhaps the best known for its sunset views.

This sandy and rocky beach originated as a retirement community back in the 50s, and it’s not difficult to see why it was such a sought after place to retire. Our tip? Bring a blanket, some drinks, and take some time to soak it all in… just make sure you don’t miss the last ferry out!

Enjoy some beach time

Speaking of beaches, Bowen Island has several. If you’re looking for a low-key way to enjoy your time on the island, then lazing out on a beach could be just the thing you need.

While almost 50 municipal beaches and coastal access points exist on the island, there are a few classic go-tos for visitors thanks to their excellent amenities and accessibility.

These so-called “Community Beaches” are…

  • Sandy Beach
  • Tunstall Bay Beach
  • Bowen Bay Beach
  • Roger Curtis Beach

Click here to learn more about Bowen Island’s beaches.

Unwind at Snug Cove

Snug Cove (in addition to having the most adorable of names) is where you’ll find main ferry terminal on Bowen Island. This means that any visitor from the mainland will inevitably pass through Snug Cove at some point, which means visiting is both a mandatory and fun thing to do while on Bowen Island.

What is there to do at Snug Cove, exactly? All the best things – namely eat, shop, and relax! Not only will you find a small but mighty selection of eateries and cafes in the cove and its immediate vicinity, there is also the Bowen Island Pub, and Visitor Information Centre as well.

Many use Snug Cove as a starting point for all their Bowen Island adventures, but make sure you don’t miss exploring the area a bit as well – it truly is lovely.

For breakfast, we highly recommend stopping by the ultra cozy and cute Snug Cafe, which has amazing breakfast burritos and coffee:

bowen island day trip by foot

And we can highly recommend grabbing some Earnest Ice Cream (some of Vancouver’s best ice cream !) from Branch & Butter as a little treat before getting on the ferry back. Just don’t overestimate your time and miss the ferry buying ice cream like we did…

bowen island day trip by foot

Enjoy some local art galleries

With Bowen Island being such a naturey paradise, many visitors are surprised to hear that it is in fact considered the 5th most artistic community in Canada (when counting the number of residents who rely on art for their main source of income).

This means that yes, indeed, Bowen Island is an artists’ community, with plenty of great activities to offer lovers of art and culture.

Not sure where to start? Artisan Square is home to a number of great galleries and shops.

Click here for more information about the art galleries you can visit on Bowen Island.

Visit the world’s smallest candy store

As far as unique shopping opportunities in Bowen Island are concerned, few are as sweet as Candy in the Cove , the self-proclaimed “smallest candy store in the world”.

Here, you’ll find an eclectic but tasty mix of candies from all around the world, from nostalgic and novelty picks to tempting bulk bin goodies.

And while we can’t really confirm that this IS the world’s tiniest candy store, it’s still well worth checking out thanks to its convenient location steps away from the ferry.

Head to the Bowen Island Museum and Archives

Looking for rainy day things to on Bowen Island? History buffs should definitely make a point of visiting the Bowen Island Museum and Archives , which is home to a variety of permanent and temporary exhibitions that preserve and honour the history of the island.

Spread over two buildings, visitors can view a variety of items, from historic photos and artifacts to local maps and biographical records. Best of all, admission is by donation.

Scope out filming locations

Just as one of the top things to do in Fort Langley is look out for quaint filming locations, the same is true when on Bowen Island, which has been used as a filming location for many, many productions over the years.

So, if you’re looking for something a bit dorky to do while exploring Bowen, why not do some research and DIY a little tour of filming spots you recognize?

Some famous productions that have filmed at Bowen Island include The Wicker Man, Virgin River, and Riverdale.

Here is a more complete list.

Rent a cozy cabin

Lastly, while Bowen Island is an easy day trip to do from Vancouver, those looking to really get away from it all can take advantage of the (small but mighty) selection of cabin rentals available on the island.

Wildwood Cabins for instance offer rustic accommodation hidden away in a lush forest, with its own on-site yoga studio and fresh, local eggs.

Union Steamship Historical Cottages also offer heritage-style accommodation right by the water.

NOTE: Bowen is a small place, and tends to book out well in advance due to its popularity. To maximize your chances at securing your dream cabin rental, be sure to plan very far ahead!

Bowen Island: Where Nature Unveils its Majesty

Located across Howe Sound from Vancouver, Bowen Island is a haven for nature enthusiasts . What’s more, this picturesque island’s close vicinity to the city makes it one of my favourite day trips from Vancouver during the summer heat.

But what makes it so special? Well, despite being just a stone’s throw from the Lower Mainland, Bowen still boasts a rugged coastline, lush forests, and mesmerizing mountain vistas . This allows you to explore its breathtaking attractions, local culture, and recreational activities after a quick ferry ride from the city.

As soon as you set foot on Bowen Island, you’ll feel a sense of tranquillity enveloping you , making it the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Things to do on Bowen Island

Exploring Snug Cove: The Heart of Bowen Island

Snug Cove, the main hub of Bowen Island, is a vibrant village that serves as the island’s gateway . This charming waterfront area welcomes visitors with its quaint shops, cozy cafes, local art galleries and, of course, the ferry landing. Take a leisurely stroll along the marina, breathe in the fresh sea air, and soak up the laid-back atmosphere.

Don’t forget to visit the Bowen Island Marina, where you can admire the beautiful boats bobbing in the crystal-clear waters. The best part? The entire area is walkable , meaning you’re free to visit without a vehicle or park it for the day.

Wander Bowen Island’s Magnificent Hiking Trails

Are you ready to lace up your hiking boots and venture into Bowen Island’s wilderness? With an extensive network of over 47 km of well-maintained trails, the island offers a plethora of options for hikers of all skill levels.

One of the most popular trails is the Mount Gardner hike, which rewards you with panoramic views of the surrounding islands and the sparkling waters of the Salish Sea. From moss-covered forests to coastal bluffs with ocean views, Bowen Island’s hiking trails never cease to amaze.

Relax at Bowen Island’s Beaches

When it comes to relaxation, Bowen Island has got you covered with its 48 idyllic beaches . Sandy shores, rocky coasts, and steep cliffs are all on offer, providing a serene ambiance that’s hard to resist.

My favourite is Tunstall Bay Beach, which offers a peaceful retreat where you can bask in the sun, take refreshing dips in the ocean, or unwind with a good book. Other community beaches include Bowen Beach, Roger Curtis Beach, and the aptly named Sandy Beach.

No matter which you choose, Bowen Island’s beaches are perfect for rejuvenating your mind, body, and soul .

Immerse Yourself in Local Culture: Art Galleries and Studios

Bowen Island is a haven for artists and art enthusiasts. The island’s vibrant artistic community is showcased in its numerous galleries and studios , where you can admire and purchase a diverse range of artworks. Here are a few of my favourites:

Best things to do on Bowen Island

  • The best things to do on Bowen Island

Located in the middle of Howe Sound, Bowen Island is only a 20-minute ferry ride from Vancouver but it feels worlds apart. With its vast forests, endless shoreline, and little coves, this idyllic island is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and reconnect with nature. While it may only be 12 km long and 6 km wide, there is a surprising amount of things to do on Bowen Island.

Whether you’re planning a day trip to Bowen Island or a short weekend break from Vancouver , the island offers countless outdoor adventures. Explore the hiking trails, rent kayaks and paddle along the shoreline in search of local wildlife, or hire bikes and venture out to the quieter side of the island.

Bowen Island isn’t just about the outdoor activities though. As you walk around, you’ll notice that the island is home to an astonishing number of galleries, boutiques and craft shops. As the 5 th most artistic community in Canada, arts and culture are the fabric of Bowen Island. Pop into Branch 01 and check out their locally curated goods, and then head to Artisan Square to browse the art galleries.

With so much to do, I’ve put together a complete guide to Bowen Island to help you plan your own trip. In this post, you’ll find the best things to do on Bowen Island, as well as practical information on how to get to Bowen Island and where to stay.

VISITING BOWEN ISLAND: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Travelling by car.

Take the 20-minute ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Snug Cove on Bowen Island. Ferries leave roughly once an hour. You can see the full Bowen Island ferry schedule here . A return trip costs $50 – 60 for one vehicle (less than 7 ft. tall and 20 ft. long) with two passengers but you only pay on the way to Bowen Island. On the way back, you’ll just get in the queue and drive straight onto the ferry.

Unlike other ferry routes to the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island , the Bowen Island to Vancouver ferry is a non-bookable route. Fares are paid at the terminal at the time of travel instead. Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure to ensure you get on the ferry. There are usually long queues in the summer months so I would suggest getting there 30 minutes beforehand if possible.

I personally use Auto Europe to book car hire for my trips as it’s really easy to use. You can compare all the major companies in a grid format that shows the prices for different car sizes by provider. They also clearly show what is and isn’t included in the price. If you need any help, their 24/7 customer service is very good.

TRAVELLING TO BOWEN ISLAND WITHOUT A CAR

If you’re looking for Vancouver weekend getaways that don’t require a car, Bowen Island should be at the top of your list. There are plenty of things to do on Bowen Island without a car. The ferry arrives into Snug Cove and the village, beaches and numerous trails are all accessible by foot. Being quite small, it’s easy to walk to the main attractions. You can also hire bikes or scooters to get around once you’re there (more on that later though).

If you’re travelling to Bowen Island without a car, take the bus to Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal and board as a foot passenger. The #250 Horseshoe Bay and #257 Horseshoe Bay Express both provide regular daily service from Downtown Vancouver. The ferry costs $11 return for a foot passenger.

Alternatively, if you aren’t planning to take your car to Bowen Island, you could travel by water taxi. The Cormorant Water Taxi provides both schedules and chartered services for many routes, including Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) to Bowen Island (Snug Cove). For more information, visit their website .

Getting around Bowen Island

Bowen Island is quite compact so you can explore a lot on foot if you’re travelling without a car. If you plan on exploring the quieter, west-side of the island having a car would be helpful. Bear in mind though that parking is limited on Bowen Island. It fills up quickly in the summer months so if you’re planning to visit in peak season, I would avoid bringing your car. You can bring your own bike or rent one on the island if you want to explore further afield.

You can also use the local buses to get around Bowen Island. There are three bus routes; #280 Bluewater, #281 Eaglecliff and #282 Mt. Gardner. The bus schedule is in line with the ferry schedule so buses arrive and depart in time with the ferries but this can vary. You can check the latest bus schedule here to plan your trip.

While having a car does give you more flexibility, there are plenty of things to do on Bowen Island without a car. I’ve included a section later on which lists out the best things to do if you’re travelling without a car.

The best time to visit Bowen Island

Bowen Island is a great year-round destination. In spring, the weather is usually quite pleasant although there can be quite a few rain showers. Summer is the ideal time for hiking, cycling and other outdoor activities as it is mainly warm and sunny. If you’re hoping to hike some of Bowen Island’s trails and go kayaking, July and August are the best months to visit for good weather. However, be prepared for crowds and limited parking. If you plan to go in the summer months, I recommend travelling as a foot passenger or bringing/ renting a bike to get around.

Fall and winter are also lovely times to visit Bowen Island. It can be cloudy and rainy but you can also get crisp sunny days too. It’s much quieter and accommodation is usually cheaper so it’s a great place to go if you’re looking for a quick weekend break from Vancouver .

Best things to do on Bowen Island

WHERE TO STAY ON BOWEN ISLAND

A lot of people just do a day trip to Bowen Island but it really is such a quaint and pretty place that I suggest staying for one night if you can. There are a couple of hotels but most of the accommodation on Bowen Island is either cabins or B&Bs.

If you’re visiting Bowen Island without a car, try to find somewhere close to Snug Cove so that you’re within walking distance of the shops and restaurants. Accommodation usually books up quickly on weekends and in the summer months, so make sure you reserve in advance once you know your dates.

CAMPING ON BOWEN ISLAND

Camping is not allowed on Bowen Island. There aren’t any official campgrounds and wild camping is not permitted anywhere on the island.

Artisan Suites

Located in the quaint Artisan Square, this all-suite boutique hotel puts you in the heart of the island’s cultural hub. There are four suites with views over the ocean and mountains. It’s a 15-minute uphill walk from Snug Cove so it’s a great place to stay if you’re not bringing your car (or a heavy suitcase).

EVERGREEN COTTAGE

If you’re bringing a car and want something more peaceful, I highly recommend the Evergreen Cottage. It has gorgeous water and mountain views of Howe Sound and West Vancouver. Guests can relax on the large deck or cozy up inside next to the stone fireplace. The property also has 5 acres of private land which has lovely walking trails.

WILDWOOD CABINS

For a truly magical stay, book a rustic cabin at Wildwood and head off the grid for a couple of days. Tucked into the forest canopy, there are four classic log cabins, a yoga studio, and a wood fired barrel sauna. Guests can also enjoy the secret sunset viewpoint up on the ridge behind the cabins. It’s definitely one of the best places to stay on Bowen Island!

The best tHINGS TO DO ON BOWEN ISLAND

1. go kayaking.

Located in Howe Sound, Bowen Island has incredible views of the mountain ranges. Sea kayaking is one of the best ways to take in the views and spot local marine wildlife. Bowen Island Sea Kayaking offers single and double kayak rentals, as well as stand-up paddle boards (SUPs). They’re located in Snug Cove right next to the marina so it’s very easy to get out on the water.

Paddle around the little inlets, islands and beaches at your own pace, or join one of their kayaking tours and learn about the island’s history and geology. If you’re visiting during the summer months, I recommend reserving your rentals in advance as it’s one of the most popular things to do on Bowen Island.

2. Walk around Crippen Park

Crippen Park is a lovely sprawling regional park on Bowen Island. While Dorman Point and Killarney Lake are the main highlights, there are actually a number of shorter trails that wind through the park. Alder Grove Trail and Killarney Creek Trail and Meadow Trail are lovely routes that take you through the lush forest. Make sure you take a quick stroll along Lady Alexandra Promenade, an accessible boardwalk path that was built in the 1920s.

Crippen Park is also a lovely place for a picnic. There are a number of picnic shelters and barbecues near Snug Cove, as well as picnic tables throughout the park.

3. Explore Artisan Square

This small vibrant community is located just a 10 to 15 minute uphill walk from Snug Cove. It’s a quaint place to explore and has some lovely views of the mountains and ocean in the distance. You’ll find a number of boutique shops selling fresh flowers, stylish clothes, eco-friendly soaps and other artisan goods. Artisan Square is also home to various art galleries and small businesses, including a dentist and gym.

Artisan Eats Café is a great place for breakfast or lunch. They serve homemade salads and sandwiches, as well as a number of daily specials such as quiche and cauliflower rice bowl. Afterwards, stop by Cocoa West Chocolatier for some handmade chocolates. They also serve delicious ice cream which is perfect on a hot day.

Things to do on Bowen Island - Artisan Square

4. Explore Bowen Island’s hiking trails

Bowen Island has some lovely hiking trails which are easily accessible from the ferry terminal. There are 3 main hikes on the island:

  • Dorman Point: Located in Crippen Regional Park, this is the shortest hike on Bowen Island. The 2.4 km out-and-back trail is considered an easy route with minimal elevation gain (112 m) and takes about an hour to complete. It is steep in places but not for long. Once you reach the top, you’ll get a stunning view of Howe Sound and the mainland. The view at the very top is a bit obstructed by trees but there is a short trail on the right that leads to a better viewpoint. The trail head is close to the ferry terminal so it’s a convenient hike to do if you’re visiting without a car.
  • Killarney Lake: While it’s a much longer hike than Dorman Point (7.9 km loop), Killarney Lake is another easy route. It’s a relatively flat trail with minimal elevation gain and takes about 2 hours to complete. The trail wraps around the lake so take some food with you and find a spot to enjoy the peace and quiet. Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash.
  • Mount Gardner: If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, Mount Gardner is the one to do! It’s a gruelling 17 km round trip with over 700 m elevation gain so it’s definitely not for the faint hearted. However, the views from the top are beautiful. On a clear day, you can see the Sunshine Coast, West Vancouver and Burrard Inlet. It’s one of the most popular things to do on Bowen Island for a good reason!

5. Cycle around Bowen Island

One of the best things to do on Bowen Island is to hire bikes and explore further afield. Bowen Island is very bike-friendly city and has a number of lovely cycling paths. A lot of people bring their bikes over from Vancouver and use them to get around the island. If you don’t have your own bike, you can easily rent one from Bowen eBikes. They provide electric bikes from Snug Cove just meters from the ferry terminal. These pedal-assisted bikes are capable of speeds up to 24 km an hour. Given that Bowen Island is quite hilly, you’ll be glad to have an electric bike!

You can book a bike in advance by emailing [email protected] , or you can pick one up on the day. They operate on a first-come first-served basis so there is no guarantee that they will have a bike on the day if you don’t reserve in advance.

6. Venture out to the Cape on Bowen Island

Located on the west side of the island, the Cape is a beautiful and relatively untouched area. A lot of visitors don’t make it over to this side of Bowen Island as it’s not very accessible without a car. However, if you’re travelling by car to Bowen Island, I highly recommend driving out to the Cape to explore the quieter side of the island.

Head to Roger Curtis Lighthouse first and then make your way to Turnstall Bay for sunset. As you get closer to the Cape, you’ll notice that there are lots of paved roads that lead to plots of land but there aren’t any houses. It felt as if we’d stumbled on an abandoned community but they are actually in the process of developing this area. Many of the 10-acre lots have already been sold so it won’t be long before you start to see houses and estates here.

The Cape is one of the best things to see on Bowen Island

7. Check out the local art galleries

One of my favourite things to do on Bowen Island is to pop into the local art galleries. There are a number of lovely galleries dotted around Snug Cove and up in Artisan Square. The artwork ranges from photography and paintings to pottery and clothing.

Arts Pacific is located in Artisan Square and showcases the handmade work of 15 different artists. They sell wall art, jewellery, pottery and sculptures so you’re bound to find some lovely gifts by local artists here.

Catching Stars Gallery is another great place to explore when visiting Bowen Island. It’s located just off the main road opposite Bowen Island’s liquor store on Dorman Road. It’s easy to miss it if you aren’t looking for it! The gallery is a BC Artist Cooperative and has a beautiful and diverse collection of handcrafted artwork. They sell lovely glass works, paintings and sculptures, as well as pretty home décor such as pillows, candles and soaps.

8. Try some amazing cocktails at Copper Spirit Distillery

Located on the main road minutes from Snug Cove, this boutique craft distillery and tasting lounge serves incredible cocktails. Founded by Miguel and Candice Kabantsov, all of their spirits are handcrafted on Bowen Island. Miguel is responsible for distilling the spirits while Candice creates the delightful botanicals for the cocktails.

The tasting room serves mini cocktails (1/2 oz) using their vodka, gin and rye. As per BC Liquor Law, you can try up to 3 cocktails per person. We loved the ‘Not Your Grandma’s Soap’, a sweet concoction of their vodka, lavender and botanicals, and the ‘Cherry Rye Sour’, which is a twist on the classic sour. They do close relatively early (7pm in the off season and 8pm in summer) so I recommend popping in before dinner.

Copper Spirit Distillery - Best things to do on Bowen Island

9. Go golfing at Bowen Island’s award-winning golf club

Voted one of Canada’s Hidden Gem Golf Courses and one of the top 25 nine-hole courses in Canada, Bowen Island Golf Club is very picturesque. Carved out of a West Coast rain forest, the 9-hole golf course has incredible views of Howe Sound. If you’re a keen golfer then I highly recommend booking a couple of rounds of golf here. The Club House offers rentals and light refreshments from May through to September. You can find more information and book your tee time at Bowen Island Golf Club .

10. Pop into Branch on Bowen

With its pastel colours, Branch on Bowen is an adorable little shop right next to the ferry terminal. They serve delicious tacos as well as Earnest Ice Cream. Pop into their gift shop, Branch 01, next door and browse a selection of locally curated items made by Canadian artisans. From beautiful pottery to delicate jewellery, they have a lovely shop and you’re bound to find some special mementos to take home.

Branch on Bowen Island

11. Explore Bowen Island’s lovely beaches

Bowen Island has 48 beaches and coastal access points so you’re spoilt for choice. The majority of the beaches are pebbly and rocky but Sandy Beach does have some sand (hence the name). You can swim at most beaches but not all so make sure you check Tourism Bowen Island before your trip.

Sandy Beach and Pebbly Beach are both close to Snug Cove and are easily accessible on foot from the ferry terminal. They’re both located in the sheltered Deep Bay so the water here is warmer than other bays on Bowen Island. On the opposite side of the island, you have Roger Curtis Beach and the lovely Turnstall Bay Beach.

12. Watch the sunset at Turnstall Bay Beach

Located on the western side of Bowen Island, Turnstall Bay Beach is one of the best places to watch the sunset. Explore the Cape and Roger Curtis Lighthouse and then head over to Turnstall Bay Beach just before sunset. It can get quite windy so make sure you wrap up warm as the temperatures drop quickly once the sunsets on the west side.

The easiest way to get to Turnstall Bay Beach is by car; however, you can get the #280 Bluewater bus which stops near Turnstall Bay. From there, it’s about a 10 to 15 minute walk to the beach.

Beaches on Bowen Island

13. Unwind with some yoga at Nector Yoga Retreat

Yoga and meditation are very popular things to do on Bowen Island and there are several retreats you can attend. Nectar Yoga Retreat is one of the most established yoga retreats, offering curated and intensive overnight retreats and workshops for those looking for the full yoga and meditation experience. Located in the middle of the woods, their Scandinavian-inspired cottages provide the perfect place to rest and recharge.

If you’re not a big yogi, you can still attend a class during your trip to Bowen Island. Nectar Yoga offers Saturday and Sunday classes on the pier which is a unique experience.

14. Book a fishing trip with Bonchovy Fishing Charters

Although it’s not for everyone, a fishing trip is a quintessential West Coast experience. If you’re looking for a family friendly activity or want to try fishing for the first time, Bon Chovy Fishing Carters run daily trips throughout the year. Their experienced team provide all of the gear and equipment you need and will take you to the best spots near Bowen Island. You can choose from half-day and full-day trips, as well as private charters and multi-day fishing expeditions.

Fishing is a very popular thing to do on Bowen Island

THINGS TO DO ON BOWEN ISLAND WITHOUT A CAR

There are plenty of things to do on Bowen Island without a car. Most of the activities and attractions listed above can be reached without a car, either on foot or by bike or bus.

You can easily explore all of the main sights around Snug Cove, including Branch on Bowen, Sandy Beach, Pebbly Beach, and Crippen Park.

Hiking trails

The trail heads for Killarney Lake and Dorman Point are also very close to the ferry terminal so you don’t need a car to get there. Getting to the trail head for Mount Gardner is also quite easy as it’s close to Killarney Lake. You can either walk there (which does add on a few km to an already long hike) or get the #282 Mt. Gardner bus which will drop you closer to the trail head.

Artisan Square

The #280 bus connects Snug Cove and Artisan Square so if you’re not keen on walking up and down the hilly road, you can jump on the bus instead.

Bowen Bay and Turnstall Bay Beach

The #280 bus goes from Snug Cove to Bowen Bay. It also stops at Turnstall Boulevard which is a 10 – 15 minute walk from Turnstall Bay Beach.

This is definitely one of the harder things to do on Bowen Island without a car. You could take the bus to Turnstall Boulevard and walk to the Cape and Roger Curtis Lighthouse but that would take about an hour one way. The best option would be to hire a bike and cycle down to the Cape instead.

The Cape on Bowen Island

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK ON BOWEN ISLAND

I’ve already mentioned a few places in this guide (namely Artisan Eats Café and the lovely Copper Distillery) but here are a few other places to try during your trip:

The Snug Café

The Sung Café is a very cozy coffee shop with great outdoor seating. It’s a popular spot with locals who pop in for coffee and breakfast bagels and wraps. Make sure you visit at least once for breakfast or brunch and enjoy the bustling atmosphere!

Barcelona Tapas & Wine Bar

Get a taste of Spain at this tapas and wine bar. They serve delicious homemade food and a fine selection of Spanish and local wines.

Not a fan of Spanish tapas? Travel to Italy instead and visit this cute Italian Trattoria serving wood oven pizzas and Mediterranean cuisine.

Bowen Island Pub

Just up the hill from the ferry terminal, Bowen Island Pub is a lively spot to visit, especially if you’re staying overnight. They serve all the pub favourites and have an extensive cocktail menu with a number of their own creations. They also serve beers from the Bowen Island brewery.

Doc Morgan’s

This gastropub has it all; great food, great service and great views. The patio looks out over the cove and the expansive lawn making it the perfect place to enjoy a cold drink and some hearty food after a day exploring.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON THE BEST THINGS TO DO ON BOWEN ISLAND

There is no shortage of amazing things to do on Bowen Island. From hiking the iconic Mount Gardener to relaxing on one of the island’s many beaches, Bowen Island is a lovely getaway from Vancouver. Whether you choose to visit for the day or stay for the weekend, make the most of the slower pace and enjoy being on ‘island time’.

The scenic hiking trail that wraps around Killarney Lake offers the perfect reason to make a day trip to the peaceful community of Bowen Island. Just 20 minutes by ferry from Horseshoe Bay, one gets the full sense of laid-back island life.

The best option is to walk onto the ferry and either bus to Horseshoe Bay or drive and pay for day parking by the ferry terminal. Check with BC Ferries for updated sailing times.

From the Snug Cove ferry terminal on Bowen Island, walk up the road past the marina towards the shops. Here you can grab a coffee or snack before your walk to Killarney Lake. To get to the start of the trail, go right onto the first street called Cardena Drive and walk about 100 meters to a green and yellow GVRD parks sign on the left of the road. This sign marks the start to Crippen Regional Park.

Take the trail as it heads into the forest to a 4-way junction a short distance away. Go straight and continue as views of the lagoon can be seen between the trees on the right.

The trail intersects with Miller Road just beyond the fish ladders. Cross the road and continue along the path now called the Hatchery Trail. When you reach a 3-way junction, go right towards the open meadow. Continue straight through the meadow and across a wooden bridge to another 3-way junction. Go left towards a fork in the trail. Both of these trails lead to Killarney Lake, however follow the trail to the left and later return from the trail on the right.

After a few more minutes of walking, Killarney Lake becomes visible through the trees. Go left at the gravel road and a quick right onto the path. A few more steps brings you to a bench with a complete view of the lake. After taking photos and enjoying the view, continue along the trail, past the outhouses and parking area. About 10 minutes further you arrive at another viewpoint along the western shore of the lake.

Continue along the trail as it wraps around Killarney Lake, crossing several boardwalks and bridges along the route. On the north end of the lake, the trail exits onto a wooden boardwalk where dead Cedar stumps stick up from the marsh. The eerie looking stumps of Cedar trees are very strong and take decades to decay.

Continue your walk around Killarney Lake by walking back into the forest. The trail along the east side of the lake meanders through groves of Cedar and Hemlock. A short path leads to another viewpoint of the lake. Take in this view as from this point the hiking trail only offers glimpses of the lake as it wanders over and around small hills that surround the lake.

Eventually you arrive at a gravel road. Go left up the short hill and right at the gate where there is a green and yellow sign pointing the way to the ferry. Soon after, the trail rejoins the trail where you walked past earlier. At the wooden bridge, continue straight taking a slightly different route to return to Snug Cove. At Miller Road, go right and walk alongside the road for 200 meters to a creek and a trail on the left. Follow this trail as it brings you back to Cardena Drive and just a few stops up the street from the shops and ferry terminal.

Vancouver to Bowen Island: Easy Day-trip from Vancouver

Vancouver to bowen island: is it worth a trip.

An easy day-trip (or longer!) getaway from Vancouver, Bowen Island is a beautiful Island located just off the coast of West Vancouver in Howe Sound. It’s a quick 20 minute boat ride from downtown Vancouver. You’ll find so many things to do on Bowen Island, including stunning beaches, rainforest hikes, views over Howe sound, delicious restaurants, and comfortable accommodations. All of this on this little island that is a part of the city of Vancouver. One could argue it’s one of the best day-trips from Vancouver!

Is Biking on Bowen Island safe?

You can bike on Bowen Island, with a warning that there are lots of hills! There is only one section of developed bike pathways on Bowen Island, with plans in place to extend this over the next decades. If you choose to bike on Bowen Island, be aware that there are no shoulders on the road, the roads are windy, and of course the hills. As a recreational biker, I can say that these hills were a workout, and I wouldn’t feel comfortable biking with kids to get around Bowen Island.

4 Beaches Within Walking Distance of Snug Cove Ferry Terminal

  • Sandy Beach Bowen Island. This is a beach within walking distance of the Bowen Island Ferry Terminal. The water is shallow and warm (ish) and is a great place to swim. This beach has some sand, and very small rocks. There is boat storage and outdoor bathrooms available. This is a perfect kids beach on Bowen Island, or place to spend a day lounging in the sun. It is also close to the restaurants and parks of Bowen Island. • Mother’s Beach This beach is located right under the causeway, and has a nice sandy area for playing in the sand, it is not recommended for swimming. A great spot for littles that don’t care for swimming, but love the sand! Children who don’t love the water do exist, I have one! 😂
  • Pebbly Beach is just a little further, over the bridge past sandy beach from Snug Cove. There are lots of logs, and small rocks here to explore, and even some sandy areas.
  • September Morn Beach is a 20 minute walk from the Bowen Island Ferry Terminal, Snug Cove. This beach is on Dorman Bay and has a steep bank to get down to the beach. Heads up, although beautiful, this one is a clothing optional beach.

Bowen Island

Getting Here

  • Plan your visit

When planning your trip to Bowen Island, you may want to consider leaving your car at home and taking public transit from Downtown Vancouver. It's easy, convenient and economical. When you arrive on Bowen, the ferry terminal is in Snug Cove so you can easily walk to shops, restaurants, trails and beaches.

The Queen of Capilano , the Bowen Island ferry, leaves Horseshoe Bay between the hours of 5:50 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The crossing time is 20 minutes. All tickets include return fare and when you depart Bowen, you will not be asked to show your receipt. Be aware that ticket sales close ten minutes prior to the scheduled sailing and sometimes there are lineups to purchase tickets, so give yourself enough time. As you sail across the channel, enjoy the views of Howe Sound and watch for marine and bird life.

Horseshoe Bay to Bowen Island ferry schedule April 8 - May 15

Travel Non-Peak Sailings to Avoid Delays

The Snug Cove ferry is a non-reservable route. Therefore, we highly recommend both foot passengers and vehicle passengers plan accordingly and, when possible, travel during non-peak sailings. If you’re driving, we recommend arriving at least 45 minutes before the sailing that you’re hoping to get on. Moreover, if you need to arrive for a specific time, such as an event or an appointment, we recommend taking at least one sailing prior. It’s fairly common for the Snug Cove route to run late or be overloaded. The summer months are peak travel months, so leave the car at home if you can.

This graph shows typical capacity levels for both Horseshoe Bay and Snug Cove departures. While this is general information, and delays or overloads can occur on any sailing, this graph does suggest typical capacity levels.

BC Ferries Snug Cove route capacity for each sailing, based on 2022-2023 information.

If you’re overloaded, we recommend making the best of the situation. You do not have to sit in your car and get hot & bothered. If you’re in Horseshoe Bay, you can go for a walk, enjoy the lovely ocean-view park, grab a meal, drink and visit the shops & galleries. If you’ve lined up your car in Snug Cove, you can also go for a walk, sit on a shady park bench, and enjoy a meal, drink or a little shopping.

Limited Parking in Horseshoe Bay

Be aware that there is very limited parking in Horseshoe Bay and it fills up very fast on the weekends and during the summer months. So to avoid disappointment and frustration, we recommend taking public transit to Horseshoe Bay if your plan is to walk onto the ferry rather than drive.

Public Transit to Horseshoe Bay

The West Vancouver Blue Bus numbers 250 Horseshoe Bay and 257 Horseshoe Bay Express provide regular daily service between Downtown Vancouver and Horseshoe Bay. Please visit Translink for current schedules and trip planning information.
