You'll hear the fascinating history and lore of Portsmouth Harbor as we navigate 10 miles of river and ocean out to Star Island, one of the first footholds for settlement in the new world. Disembark with our tour guide and explore Star Island. Your guide will walk you through over 400 years of rich history including the charting of the Isles in 1614 by Captain John Smith of Jamestown and Pocohontas fame who was given the isles as a reward for his efforts on behalf of the Crown of England. Hear the legend of the pirates Blackbeard and Captain Kidd, and the lady ghost of White Island. In the 1800's, resort hotels were built on Star and Appledore Islands and the Shoals became one of the most popular vacation spots on the New England Coast. You'll see the Oceanic hotel, which rivaled the grandest hotels of the time and is still in operation today. Your tour will take you through the replica of Gosport Village, a fishing outpost dating back to the early 1600s which includes the picturesque Stone Chapel and several cottages. You'll also see the tallest gravestone in the state of New Hampshire, the John Smith Monument, and the Caswell Cemetary.

Miami Star Island Cruises is a family-oriented boat tour company that offers sightseeing cruises of Biscayne Bay and the Venetian Islands. The company has a strict no-smoking policy on all of its cruises. However, vaping is allowed on the front and back of the boat, as long as vapers are considerate of the families and children around them.

The company's no-smoking policy is in place to protect the health and safety of all passengers and crew members. Secondhand smoke is a known health hazard, and it can be especially harmful to children and people with respiratory problems.

Passengers who are caught smoking on board a Miami Star Island Cruises boat will be asked to put out the cigarette immediately. There will be no refunds for passengers who are asked to leave for violating the no-smoking policy.

Yes, we do have boats that are wheelchair accessible. Not all of the boats are wheelchair accessible, so please contact us and we’ll tell you at what time that boat is going to be going out.

Visiting For The Day

Star Island’s open season runs from mid-June until mid-September. You are welcome to visit the grounds then, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you would like to extend your stay, you are welcome on Star Island at one of our conferences.

There are many opportunities for visiting Star Island. If you have a private boat in Gosport Harbor, you are welcome to tie up a dinghy on our dock and visit. In addition, the boat companies Isles of Shoals Steamship Company (“M/V Thomas Laighton”) and Island Cruises (“Uncle Oscar”) offer day or evening visits to Star Island.

There are plenty of fun activities to do and locations to visit on Star Island. Learn more about what is available to do during your stay.

For Visiting Yachtsman:

Only dinghies less than 14 feet may be tied to the main float. Generally, no more than 8 dinghies can fit at one time. Please follow the directions of the lifeguard. If there is no lifeguard on duty, tie your dinghy where indicated by the sign. The front face of the float is in use at all hours by island boats and must never be blocked. Dogs may be taken for a walk on Malaga Island, just across the harbor. Dogs are not permitted on Star Island. Please take great care to protect the pristine waters of the Gulf of Maine and Star Island swimming area from litter and discharge.

For Your Own Safety And Enjoyment, Please…

• Wear shoes and stay on the paths. It’s the best way to avoid poison ivy and possible injury from sharp objects.
• Keep an eye on your children at all times.
• Treat the island with respect by not littering, picking flowers, or disturbing marine life.
• The island is a historic district and collecting of any kind is not permitted.
• Follow federal and state laws forbidding the use of illegal drugs and the use of alcohol by persons under 21. No guns or fireworks are allowed on the island.
• Swim only in the main pier area when the lifeguard is on duty. If there is no lifeguard on duty, swimming is not permitted.
• Stay off the breakwater. It is extremely dangerous.

MUNISING, MI - Each year, repeat travelers and new visitors alike make the pilgrimage to the Upper Peninsula’s Munising area so they can marvel at the beautiful cliff colors found along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

At the western edge of that area sits the much less-visited Grand Island. It is just offshore in Lake Superior. And here’s a little secret: Because the area’s geology is the same as nearby Pictured Rocks, Grand Island sports the same gorgeous rock colors and expansive views of our biggest Great Lake.

One cool way to see all that wild beauty is to book a lunch or dinner cruise around Grand Island. Paddling Michigan offers these unique on-the-water getaways that combine motoring around this fascinating spot and hearing about its history from the boat captain. “We go completely around the island and there’s really a lot of history,” said Bill Duckwall, owner of the longtime Paddling Michigan vacation and tour business based near Pictured Rocks. “That island is the same size as Manhattan island in New York. And there are some really neat cliffs and caves.”

But unlike the home of Wall Street, Grand Island is packed with forests, wildlife - including black bears - and crisscrossed with mountain biking and hiking trails. It also has an historic lighthouse on the north end that is on private property and can only be seen by a water tour.

Duckwall’s team runs two big catamarans for its Grand Island cruises - the Mishosha and the Uncle Ducky. Both vessels are Coast Guard-inspected and certified. The cruises board next to the Duck Pond Restaurant and Beer Garden , which is about 3 miles west of Munising on state highway M-28.

Reserving a spot for a lunch or dinner cruise allows you to select a complimentary meal from the restaurant on site. “You can enjoy your food before or after your cruise, or take your meal on the cruise boat,” staff said.

Each cruise-and-meal session lasts about 2.5 hours. The Grand Island cruise boats are also available for private charters.

“People love this tour,” Duckwall said. “They get to see a lot of the same geology as Pictured Rocks.”

• Grand Island is part of the Hiawatha National Forest
• It sits in Lake Superior, about a half-mile from the Munising mainland
• You can take bikes to the area to ride the trails, but eBikes are not allowed
• It’s about 8 miles long and encompasses about 13,500 acres
• Its stunning North Lighthouse is on privately-owned land, but can be viewed from the water. The Forest Service has this to say about this maritime beacon: “Situated atop a 175 foot cliff on Grand Island’s north end, this lighthouse has been identified as the highest lighthouse above sea level in the United States.”

Teenager reveals they left parents on Caribbean island to get back on to cruise ‘on time’

The teen was made to be 'miserable' for leaving their parents.

Taking a lavish holiday on a cruise is all the range right now, but what isn’t the range? Timeliness.

According to a high school graduate, they had to make the choice to either make the ship’s departure time or bargain at shopping stalls with their parents on a Caribbean island.

The teen took to Reddit to share their conundrum, but ultimately shared that they decided to leave said parents on the island and boarded the cruise solo.

I mean… I would too.

The poster told Redditors that the cruise was actually a present gifted to them by their parents to congratulate them for turning 18 and graduating school, but it’s when they docked at an island for a roam around where it all went wrong.

As it happens, the teen had anticipated their parents would go off and forget about the time schedule laid out by the crew, which is why they told them that 'that if we went on excursions, we had to follow the schedule no matter what'.

They continued: "Well it was a week-long cruise and they would not head back to the ship when I said it was time to go.

"They were busy shopping and bargaining with the locals. I finally said that I was heading back to the ship. My mom waved me off."

But of course, the parents ‘missed the departure... by a lot... Like 45 minutes’ due to their bad time keeping.

However, the parents didn’t see it that way and wanted to know 'why I didn't get the boat to wait for them'.

Unwilling to 'inconvenience 3,998 people because two could not understand what a schedule was', the poster shared that as a result of missing the departure, their parents had to fly to the next port, which was costly.

They then apparently spent the rest of the trip 'making me miserable because I left without them'.

Of course, most people on the platform were on the side of the teen and some had personal experience with the rules for excursions.

One person wrote: "The docks and ship have a schedule to keep. They are adults and need to be responsible for getting back on time. Which is something you have figured out in less than six months of being an adult. At least you don’t have to go on any more vacations with them after this."

Another was pretty annoyed at the parents for expecting their teenager to hold up a boat of people just so they could finish shopping.

They wrote: "Do they think if they arrive late to the airport the plane will wait around for a couple hours? This is not rocket science. It's a mode of transport, you get there on time."

Someone else chided the parents for their immaturity, writing: "Sounds like [the original poster] is the adult and the parents are the two kids."

DLNR issues letter putting cruise ship industry on notice

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources is putting the cruise industry on notice that rules must be followed when visiting the state.

The letter follows DLNR’s investigation last month into whether the Celebrity Edge, a Celebrity Cruise Lines ship had anchored too closely to shore while sailing off Kauai’s Na Pali Coast.

State rules for Na Pali Coast ocean waters require any vessels carrying more than 50 passengers to maintain a distance of at least 3,000 feet from the shoreline, DLNR said.

On May 29, DLNR said its investigation — prompted by community complaints and social media posts – was inconclusive after failing to find evidence that the Celebrity Edge violated any state rules.

DLNR Chair Dawn Chang sent a a letter to Celebrity Cruise Lines, saying the investigation “failed to find definitive evidence” the U.S. flagged cruise ship violated state rules, but that photos appeared to show the ship was indeed much closer to shore.

“This incident created a tremendous amount of angst in the community, as this area is highly protected and valued for its natural beauty and cultural significance,” she said in the letter, which was also addressed to other cruise line companies. “These nearshore waters, along the Napali Coast, are frequented by fishers, divers, kayakers, and swimmers because of its calm waters and rich marine resources.”

“We recognize the cruise ship industry’s contributions to the state’s economy,” she continued. “However, the mission of the DLNR is to ensure Hawaii’s precious and unique natural and cultural resources are protected now and in perpetuity. We are putting the industry on notice that the DLNR and the community will be closely monitoring activity not only along the Napali Coast, but throughout our state ocean waters. We urge you to conduct your operations in compliance with not only the letter of the law, but in the spirit of Aloha.”
