Vietnam baeutiful Ha Long Bay

  • Vietnam Cruises
  • Adventure Cruising

Geological riches, legendary street food, historic cities and endless tropical coast await in Vietnam.

While locals prefer to travel by motorbike, the best – and most scenic – way to see all Vietnam has to offer is by sea. Some of the country’s most visited destinations, like Halong Bay and Hoi An, as well as hidden gems, like the caves in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, are right on the coast. By opting for a cruise, you can spend your days exploring a former imperial city or the fascinating sand dunes of Mui Ne, then head back to the boat to sunbath or snorkel. No trip to Vietnam is complete without a taste of the legendary street food, so be sure to fuel your adventures with ample amounts of Vietnamese staples like pho and banh mi.

Highlights of Vietnam

Ha Long Bay emerald waters and pillars

Cruise Halong Bay’s emerald waters and pillars

Halong Bay’s iconic seascape – a wonderland of caves, coves and arches carved into jagged, tree-covered limestone pillars – is best explored by boat. Active types will want to get a closer look by kayak, which provides access to even more stunning scenery, such as caves and lagoons, accessible only through small tunnels.

Phong Nha Ke Bang cave of Vietnam

Uncover the caves of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Perhaps Vietnam’s best kept secret is the remarkable Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Spanning 885 square kilometres (550 square miles), this vast park was crowned a UNESCO World Heritage site for its 400 million-year-old limestone karst landscape, tropical forests, underground rivers and spectacular caves.

Soak up sun and history in Hoi An

A former Cham port town, Hoi An’s rich heritage is evident in its well-preserved architecture. Stroll past Chinese assembly halls, Japanese merchant houses and French colonial buildings scattered along narrow, atmospheric streets. Not nearly as chaotic as Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An is easy to walk around. Some of Vietnam’s best beaches and dive sites are also nearby.

Excursions and experiences

  • Your leader will guide you through a Hanoi ritual – join the locals and participate in laughing yoga, tai chi and other lakeside activities at the edge of the Old Quarter in the early morning.
  • Visit Vietnam’s incredible natural treasure, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, to explore the extensive Thien Duong Cave (Paradise Cave) and some of Asia’s oldest limestone.
  • Get a close-up snapshot of day-to-day life as a monk in Hue’s historic Thien Mu Pagoda, tucking into a tasty vegetarian lunch.
  • Gain eye-opening insight into the American-Vietnam War by visiting two important sights: the Khe Sanh Combat Base, where the bloodiest battle took place, and the Vinh Moc tunnels, which sheltered local communities during the war.
  • Learn about an age-old tradition with a pottery demonstration in Bau Truc, the oldest pottery village in South East Asia.

See the sights in Ho Chi Minh City

A rapidly developing city, the former Saigon has stayed true to its heritage. The symbol of Vietnam’s independence, it is home to the Reunification Palace . Images of this former presidential palace were shared around the world when a North Vietnamese army tank crashed through its gates on 30 April 1975, ending the conflict. The neoclassical Notre-Dame Cathedral and the colonial Central Post Office are a testament to the city's Western past. Designed in a more typical Vietnamese style, the bustling Jade Emperor Pagoda and the colourful Binh Tay Market are also well worth a visit.

Immerse yourself in the culture of Hanoi

Immerse yourself in the culture of Hanoi

Hanoi is one of the jewels in the Vietnamese crown, scattered with remnants of the French colonial era, traditional monuments, dazzling lakes and historic landmarks. Built 1,500 years ago, the Tran Quoc Pagoda is the oldest in Vietnam. While in Hanoi, visitors should make a stop at the H o Chi Minh Mausoleum , explore the embassy-lined streets of the former French quarter , or check out the Vietnamese Women's Museum , which pays homage to their elegance through the ages. If you are looking for a pleasant walk, the narrow streets and stalls of the Old Quarter of Hanoi exude a timeless charm, while the Hoan Kiem Lake is a scenic spot in the middle of the city.

Set sail in Ha Long Bay

Set sail in Ha Long Bay

In the Gulf of Tonkin, Ha Long Bay is one of Vietnam's most iconic locations, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Its 1,600 islets and verdant limestone pillars rise high above the water, creating breathtaking seascapes. Sailing the 1,500 square kilometres of the bay is the best way to immerse yourself in the stunning scenery: emerald water, floating fishing villages, impressive caves and lush islands.

Recharge your batteries in Nha Trang

A seaside resort on the China Sea, Nha Trang offers the perfect blend of historic landmarks and beaches lined with coconut palms. When you are not lounging by the water, you can take the chance to explore the city on foot or by pedicab. The fishing boats in the port, the Long Son Pagoda, the Dam Market, the Cham towers of Po Nagar—a sacred Hindu site—all reflect the traditional side of Vietnam .

Go further afield to the temples of Angkor, Cambodia

The temples of Angkor create a striking silhouette against the clear blue sky or the setting sun. Around a two-hour flight from Hanoi, the ruins emerge from the forest on the outskirts of Siem Reap city. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, the archaeological site embodies the grandeur of the former capital of the Khmer Empire , which lasted from the 9th to the 15th century. At its height, the city had 750,000 residents, and the Angkor Wat temple remains the largest religious complex in Southeast Asia to this day. One of the site's more unusual features, its sophisticated water management network is widely considered one of the wonders of Angkor .

Helpful tips

Dos. Politeness and discretion are the cornerstones of Vietnamese culture. If a quarrel breaks out in public, the angry party is seen as rude and the other party is humiliated.

Don'ts. Visits to temples and pagodas require proper attire, with legs and shoulders covered. You should also remove your shoes.

Unique features

In Vietnam, bakers make bread very similar to the baguettes found in France. This tradition is a remnant of the French colonial era. Known as banh mi , or "wheat bread", it is actually made using a mixture of wheat flour and rice. The term banh mi can also refer to sandwiches containing Vietnamese sausage, meatballs or chicken, grated carrots, cucumber and coriander, which are served in these baguettes.

If Vietnamese cuisine had to be boiled down to a single dish, it would be pho (pronounced "fuh"). Locals enjoy this hearty and inexpensive soup at any time of the day. Each region has its own version with its own unique flavours, but the base is always the same: beef broth simmered with plenty of spices, such as cloves, ginger and cinnamon, served with rice noodles. One of the most common choices features beef, onions, bean sprouts, cilantro, Thai basil, lime and chilli.

In the spotlight

44 years after the end of the Vietnam War, Agent Orange , the powerful herbicide that was dropped on the country's forests, is still wreaking havoc. It has a detrimental effect on the human body, causing birth defects and cancers in many children. For many years, numerous groups have been calling for the US to recognise the damage caused by this defoliant. In 2019, the United States finally launched a clean-up campaign targeting the main sites where the chemicals were stored in the 1960s.

Books. 992. Raymond Depardon and Jean-Claude Guillebaud are on an adventure through Vietnam, like so many other tourists. This duo, however, has been here before. In Return to Vietnam , the photographer and the war correspondent retrace their steps from 20 years earlier. Their bittersweet journey lets them see the country in a whole new light, witnessing the aftermath of the war they left behind.

Music. Music is an integral part of Vietnamese culture, with five different types of traditional music appearing on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List: Hue court music, the gongs of Tay Nguyen, courtesan songs ( ca tru ), antiphonal songs ( quan ho ) and communal house entry songs ( hat xoan ).

Film. Where does the life of a little girl placed in an orphanage in Ireland in the 1950s intersect with the story of Vietnam's street children? That child from Dublin grew up to be an adult, but she was haunted by nightmares of a faraway country ravaged by war. She made the journey to Vietnam in 1989 and discovered the plight of thousands of children. For the past 30 years, the Christina Noble Children's Foundation has provided them with care and education and fought against extreme poverty in Vietnam and Mongolia. A film about her story was released in 2014. http://france.cncf.org/

Luxury Cruises to Vietnam

Vietnam cruises with Celebrity show you the many faces of this intriguing country. Ancient temples, incense heavy in the air, contrast with a backdrop of glassy skyscrapers. A constant stream of scooters and motorbikes forms a river of activity through the busy cities, where street food sizzles on roadside stalls. But there’s serenity, too. Historic palaces and ornate pagodas lie in the midst of dense tropical vegetation, while emerald rice paddies reflect the vast sky.

Join a cooking class to prepare fresh, spicy Vietnamese specialties. Take a cycling tour around the enchanting town of Hoi An. See the sheer-sided limestone towers of Halong Bay from a kayak, and delve into modern history in Ho Chi Minh City, with its poignant museums and nearby, the famous Cu Chi Tunnels. You’ll find a dazzling choice of activities and excursions on a luxury cruise to Southeast Asia with Celebrity.

Vietnam Cruise Highlights

Ancient temples.

Vietnam’s countryside is dotted with majestic temples displaying an ageless beauty of bygone cultures. My Son temple complex, near Danang, is one of the most impressive, dedicated to the Hindu god, Shiva. Although the crumbling buildings are partly consumed by tropical greenery, a visit here gives you an insight into the wealth and sophistication of Vietnam’s Cham dynasty. Near Hue, visit the Imperial City, a complex within the walled citadel that was once the seat of Vietnam’s Nguyen rulers.

Dazzling Scenery

When it comes to jaw-dropping natural beauty, Vietnam has it all. Some 1,600 jungly limestone towers are scattered across an often mist-shrouded sea in Halong Bay, where tooth-like mountains are reflected in mirror-calm paddy fields. In the far south, rivers criss-cross the vast maze of the green Mekong Delta, coconut palms lining their banks. You’ll find endless golden beaches, too, especially around Danang, lapped by the warm waters of the South China Sea.

Exciting Cuisine

Vietnamese food is both elegant and unique, and packed with contrasts. Spicy dishes are tempered with fresh herbs and vegetables, while crispy salads are paired with refreshing soups and noodles. During your cruise, you could learn to make classic dishes like crispy spring rolls, stir-fried beef, minty chicken salad, and green papaya salad topped with fresh shrimp. Even if you prefer not to cook, don’t miss a chance to browse Vietnam’s colorful markets and dine in a local restaurant.

Vietnam Cruise Itineraries

Explore the coast of Vietnam on itineraries lasting either 12 or 13 nights. You could sail from Singapore to Tokyo, or between Singapore and Hong Kong in either direction. Ports of call include Ho Chi Minh City; Chan May, for Hue and Danang; the beach resort of Nha Trang; and Halong Bay, gateway to the capital, Hanoi, and magnificent limestone landscapes. Most cruises include an overnight in Halong Bay.

Why cruise to vietnam with celebrity cruises.

Celebrity’s luxurious ships take you along the coast of Vietnam in style. Toast to the end of a thrilling day ashore with cocktails at the al fresco Sunset Bar. Enjoy the flavors of iconic Italian dishes in Tuscan Grille, or specialty coffee and pastries from Café al Bacio. On Solstice-series ships, visit the Lawn Club on the upper deck for relaxing, sunbathing, or a game of croquet. Choose The Retreat for the ultimate in luxury, with access to an exclusive lounge and sundeck, fine dining in Luminae, exclusive to guests of The Retreat, and chic suite accommodation.

A cruise to Vietnam with Celebrity will give you an in-depth insight into this complex and fascinating country, from the buzz of cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City to the intricate, 19th century citadel of Hue and the French colonial architecture of Hanoi. You’ll have time to bask on the sandy beaches of Nha Trang, gaze at the otherworldly scenery of Halong Bay, and indulge in one of the most exciting cuisines in Southeast Asia.
