Scandinavia Cruise Highlights

Art and design.

Minimalist Scandinavian design has swept the world, influencing cafes, shops, and our homes for decades. While you’re traveling through beautiful cities like Oslo and Copenhagen, you’ll quickly see the contrast between early Medieval opulence and the modernist, sleek style that dominates today. Stop in Oslo’s National Museum or the Designmuseum in Copenhagen, which both explore the origins of design and architecture in the region.

Discover Viking stories and preserved ships at the Vasa Maritime Museum in Stockholm and the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. Time travel to the Medieval period as you stroll the cobblestone streets of Copenhagen, and admire the statue of the Little Mermaid, based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. Castle-hop across Denmark’s capital, stopping at Amalienborg, Rosenborg Castle, or Christiansborg Palace.

Scenic Waterways

On a Scandinavian vacation, exploring the region’s incredible fjords and picturesque canals is a must. Journey through majestic landscapes and marvel at the breathtaking views on a cruise to the Norwegian fjords . In Copenhagen and Stockholm, boat down serene canals and admire the cities’ beauty from a unique vantage point.

Featured Ports

Enjoy the colorful, cobblestone streets of Stockholm’s Gamla Stan, or Old Town, where you can discover centuries of Swedish history or shop in chic, modern boutiques. For an active adventure, go kayaking along the city’s canals and paddle through the city at your own pace.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The myths and lore of Copenhagen and its laidback ambiance have attracted international tourists for years. Visit the Little Mermaid statue commemorating Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale. Stroll alongside the Nyhavn Harbour, admiring the wooden ships floating in the calm waters. Relax and play at Tivoli Gardens, a perfect activity for all ages. Come see why Denmark is consistently rated one of the happiest places in the world.

Oslo, Norway

Viking history runs deep in Oslo. At the Viking Ship Museum, you can see preserved Viking ships on display. Art lovers, spend an afternoon surrounded by eccentric and classic sculptures at Vigeland Park. Museum hop from Oslo’s Natural Museum to the Edvard Munch Museum, which is home to the world-famous painting “The Scream.” During your day in port, visit the Ice Bar, made completely of ice.

Scandinavia Cruise Itineraries

Spend 7 to 13 nights at sea discovering the wonders of Scandinavia and beyond on a luxury cruise. Explore Norway’s fjords cruise to the region’s capital cities. Set sail from Rotterdam or Amsterdam, Netherlands, or Southampton, England aboard Celebrity Apex or Silhouette.

Need Some Help?

Take a look at our faqs, what do i pack for a cruise.

The handy checklist below has been created to assist in making sure you remember all the important things to pack for your cruise.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

This is the announcement bar for Poornima to test the Close Button.  It will expire May 31 2024.

  • Grundarfjordur

Known to be the most pleasant town in Iceland, Akureyri is teeming with tranquility and beauty. On an Iceland cruise, take a dip in the Myvatn nature baths, known for their restorative powers. Or stroll through the Botanical Gardens, where you can admire over 2,000 species of flora from around the world. Experience the best of both fire and ice when you visit Akureyri with Princess.

Encounter beauty, history and culture when you visit Bergen on your Norway cruise. Marvel at the grandeur of Hardangerfjord, the third largest fjord in the world, on a scenic day tour. Or step into a medieval assembly room at the Schøtstuene Museum, and walk down Bryggen Wharf — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves wooden buildings from the days of the Hanseatic League.

On a cruise to Iceland, unveil Grundarfjordur’s heroic past. Climb the "Holy Mountain," which once housed a temple dedicated to Thor. Tour the 4,000-year old lava fields of Berserkergata, and live through the stories of Iceland’s sagas — tales of migration, war, religion and mythology. Or spend the day birdwatching in the fishing village of Arnarstapi, where gulls, fulmars and kittiwakes reside.

Reykjavik is the gateway to natural wonders. On an Iceland cruise, warm up with a dip in the city’s Blue Lagoon, and cool down on a glacier walk across jagged ice formations. Stavanger is a true icon of Norway. As the nation’s capital of cuisine, learn how to smoke and can sardines, and then taste them yourself. Attend a musical performance in the chapel of Utstein Kloster, a 12th-century abbey that was once home to Augustine monks. Or visit Old Stavanger during your Norway cruise, and enjoy an architectural tour through Europe’s largest collection of wooden buildings.

As one of the best places to see the Northern Lights, Tromsø is teeming with wonders from the skies above to the fjords below. On a Norway cruise, learn about the city’s history of Arctic hunting at the Polar Museum. Visit the Husky Wilderness Camp to meet championship dogs and hear about their racing careers. Or ride a cable car to the peak of Mt. Storsteinen for sweeping views of the city.

Why Cruise Norway & Iceland

The majestic beauty and natural phenomena of Northern Europe offers an adventure like no other.

Natural splendors

Natural splendors abound in Norway and Iceland. In Grundarfjördur, marvel at the seascapes, fjords and tidal currents within Breidafjordur Bay. Rejuvenate in the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik. Or fly over Godafoss Waterfall, the ‘Waterfall of the Gods,’ during a flightseeing tour in Akureyri. Come face-to-face with Mother Nature’s crown jewels — only on an Norway and Iceland cruise with Princess.

The search for phenomena

Travel to Alta, the "City of the Northern Lights," for a chance to see the sky painted lime green. Cruise to Iceland in June and bask in 24 hours of daylight during the summer solstice. Or visit Honningsvag for a glimpse of the Midnight Sun during your evening departure. While we can’t guarantee you’ll see these natural phenomena, we can promise that the journey is just as exciting as the wonders themselves.

Norway & Iceland excursions

Our award-winning Norway and Iceland cruise shore excursions bring you to natural wonders, wildlife and landmarks. Relax in Reykjavik’s Blue Lagoon while gazing at snowy landscapes. Get up close to Akureyri’s 35-foot waterfall that tumbles into the Skjálfandafljót River below. Or travel to the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Farm in Grundarfjordur to learn how to make hákarl, a 400-year old Icelandic delicacy.

More ashore

Enjoy even more marvels and mysteries with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. On a Norway cruise to Alta, search for the Aurora Borealis at midnight with a cup of hot chocolate in hand. Attend a summer concert at Tromsø’s Arctic Cathedral to welcome the return of the Midnight Sun. Or enjoy a 9-hour journey through Reykjavik’s landscapes on itineraries that depart later in the evening.

Norway & Iceland Cruise Onboard Experience

Curated comfort, world-class entertainment and international flavors await you.

Experience Norway and Iceland without ever stepping off the ship. Our onboard activities bring the diverse cultures of these regions directly to you. Sing, dance, feast and celebrate in a way that only Norway, Iceland and Princess know how.

On a Norway and Iceland cruise with Princess, appease your appetite with one-of-a-kind dining on every itinerary.

Entertainment

Find your joy

Attend original productions from Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz, composer of  Wicked . Or learn traditional moves, like Flamenco or Irish stepdance, and listen to popular music from the destinations on your itinerary. On a European cruise with Princess, the choice is yours.

Reset, recharge, relax

Your European cruise should be every bit as refreshing as it is inspiring. Unwind in the Sanctuary, a retreat just for adults, and relish in tranquility. Or book an appointment at the Lotus Spa®, named "Best Spa on a Cruise Ship" by Spafinder Wellness 365™. Enjoy relaxing treatments — like facials, hot stone massages and detoxifying wraps — that will leave you recharged for upcoming adventures.

Vegas hits the seas

Experience the thrill of cards, dice, roulette and blackjack at the casino onboard our European cruises. Learn from experts — like our staff or perhaps other guests nearby — and put your skills to the test. More casual players can pull up a seat at the slot machines for the same adrenaline at their own speed. For an afternoon full of games, join fellow travelers for Bingo, or compete in scheduled group tournaments.

Celebrations and Romance

Love blooms on the Love Boat

It's difficult to imagine something more romantic than sailing through the alluring cities and charming countryside of Europe. While on board your European cruise, we cater to your sentimental side with private dining on your balcony — like breakfast for two or a sunset dinner — honeymoon packages, flowers and chocolates delivered to your room and couples-only massages in the Sanctuary.

Ships sailing norway & Iceland cruises

Our Princess fleet includes ships that range from small to large. From a balcony stateroom, marvel at breathtaking shorelines passing by before enjoying international cuisine in one of our many eateries during your Norway and Iceland cruise.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Wins 2024 Saint John Port Impact Award

  • June 7, 2024

Saint John Award

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings was honored with the 2024 Port Impact Award at the annual Port Days event in Saint John on June 6.

The award honors a company or individual demonstrating dedication to business growth, community investment and sustainability initiatives in the Greater Saint John Region.

“We are fortunate to have a cruise partner like Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings consistently calling on the Bay of Fundy,” said Natalie Allaby, director of cruise excellence at Port Saint John.

“Their continued support of Saint John and the Southern New Brunswick economy, along with their community and environmental initiatives over the past decades, make them a perfect fit for this accolade.”

In 2023, Norwegian and Regent ships received environmental rebates and launched a community outreach program for six underserved families from local neighborhoods. During this year’s Port Days, they hosted a sustainability tour for government dignitaries. Sandi Weir, global government relations and public affairs for Norwegian, accepted the award from Port Saint John Chief Operating Officer Andrew Dixon on June 6.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and its brands Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, have been consistently visiting Saint John since 1995. The company’s ships accounted for the majority of cruise calls in 2023 and over a third of visits in 2024.

The 3 Best Cruise Stocks to Buy in June 2024

T he cruise industry has experienced a remarkable resurgence since the challenges faced during the global pandemic. As we enter June 2024, the sector is showing strong signs of recovery, with pent-up demand for travel and leisure experiences driving bookings and revenue growth.

Whether you are a seasoned investor or new to the world of the best cruise stocks , the following will provide valuable insights. By considering factors such as financial stability, fleet expansion plans and other factors.

Many of the companies in the cruise industry can be snatched up at a healthy bargain. So, let’s explore three such cruise stocks for investors to buy this month. These companies won’t stay cheap for long, so decisive action is needed.

Carnival (CCL)

Carnival (NYSE: CCL ) has rebounded significantly from its lows during the pandemic. In Q1 of 2024, Carnival reported record revenue of $5.4 billion, a 22% increase year-over-year ( YOY ). Also, the company posted an operating profit of $276 million and customer deposits exceeding $7 billion.

Further, analysts have a mixed but generally positive outlook for Carnival. The consensus price target for CCL is $20, with a potential upside of around 15% from its current trading levels. Stifel reiterated a buy rating on Carnival stock, and we’ve only started to see its potential.

Also, the trailing P/E ratio of CCL of 65.15 suggests that the stock is currently valued high based on past earnings. However, the forward PE ratio of 17.84 indicates that analysts expect significant earnings growth in the coming year, making the stock cheaper on a forward-looking basis.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCLH)

Norwegian Cruise Line (NYSE: NCLH ) is another significant player, known for its premium offerings and strong market presence. The company has shown a robust recovery with a market cap of $7.76 billion.

The company increased its full-year net yield guidance to approximately 6.4%, up from the previous guidance of 5.4%. This revision is driven by strong demand across all its brands, which nearly offsets the impacts of redeployed voyages in the Middle East and Red Sea. Full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance has been raised to $2.25 billion from $2.20 billion. And adjusted EPS guidance increased to $1.32 from $1.23.

In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line announced a comprehensive new build program. It includes eight state-of-the-art vessels across its three brands and the construction of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay.

Its guidance in the short-term, as well as its incremental EPS improvements give me confidence it’s one of those cruise stocks for investors to buy.

Lindblad Expeditions (LIND)

Lindblad Expeditions (NASDAQ: LIND ) offers unique, small-ship expedition cruises in partnership with National Geographic . The company reported a strong recovery post-pandemic, with a niche market focusing on wealthy customers

The company has increased its revenue forecast to between $610 million and $630 million and expects adjusted EBITDA to be between $88 million and $98 million. The booking momentum from 2023 has continued, with bookings for 2024 4% ahead of the same point last year and over 20% ahead excluding carryover bookings from 2023.

Analysts have mixed views on Lindblad Expeditions, with a recent report showing the company missed EPS expectations. Also, it reported a loss of 10 cents per share against an expected loss of 4 cents. Despite this, the company continues to demonstrate strong revenue growth.

I still think that LIND is a buy despite these short-term misses, as it’s attractively priced when one factors in its expected growth rate metrics.

Investors Heavily Search Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH): Here is What You Need to Know

Norwegian Cruise Line ( NCLH Quick Quote NCLH - Free Report ) has been one of the most searched-for stocks on Zacks.com lately. So, you might want to look at some of the facts that could shape the stock's performance in the near term.

Over the past month, shares of this cruise operator have returned +14.6%, compared to the Zacks S&P 500 composite's +3.4% change. During this period, the Zacks Leisure and Recreation Services industry, which Norwegian Cruise Line falls in, has gained 4.1%. The key question now is: What could be the stock's future direction?

Although media reports or rumors about a significant change in a company's business prospects usually cause its stock to trend and lead to an immediate price change, there are always certain fundamental factors that ultimately drive the buy-and-hold decision.

Earnings Estimate Revisions

Here at Zacks, we prioritize appraising the change in the projection of a company's future earnings over anything else. That's because we believe the present value of its future stream of earnings is what determines the fair value for its stock.

We essentially look at how sell-side analysts covering the stock are revising their earnings estimates to reflect the impact of the latest business trends. And if earnings estimates go up for a company, the fair value for its stock goes up. A higher fair value than the current market price drives investors' interest in buying the stock, leading to its price moving higher. This is why empirical research shows a strong correlation between trends in earnings estimate revisions and near-term stock price movements.

Norwegian Cruise Line is expected to post earnings of $0.34 per share for the current quarter, representing a year-over-year change of +13.3%. Over the last 30 days, the Zacks Consensus Estimate has changed +8.2%.

The consensus earnings estimate of $1.42 for the current fiscal year indicates a year-over-year change of +102.9%. This estimate has changed +10.7% over the last 30 days.

For the next fiscal year, the consensus earnings estimate of $1.79 indicates a change of +26.4% from what Norwegian Cruise Line is expected to report a year ago. Over the past month, the estimate has changed +6.6%.

With an impressive externally audited track record , our proprietary stock rating tool -- the Zacks Rank -- is a more conclusive indicator of a stock's near-term price performance, as it effectively harnesses the power of earnings estimate revisions. The size of the recent change in the consensus estimate, along with three other factors related to earnings estimates , has resulted in a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) for Norwegian Cruise Line.

Anger in Moscow after Ukraine allowed to hit Russia with Western weapons

Ukrainian rescuers work at a site of a rocket hit to the riding hall of the Equestrian Center of the Veterinary Academy in Mala Danylivka village near Kharkiv

Russian forces have attacked the Kharkiv region, seizing several border villages

  • Published 31 May 2024

Russia has accused Nato and the US of "provoking a new level of tension" after the US and Germany became the latest allies to let Ukraine's military use Western-supplied weapons to strike targets inside Russia.

A Berlin spokesman said Germany was convinced Ukraine had the right to defend itself from Russia, especially from cross-border attacks on its second largest city Kharkiv.

US officials said American-supplied weapons could be used to counter Russian fire near the Kharkiv region, either where Russian forces were "hitting them or preparing to hit them".

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said the decision would help protect civilians living in villages close to the Russian border.

Biden allows Ukraine to hit some targets in Russia with US weapons

  • Published 7 days ago

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Nato countries, especially the US and several European countries, had "entered a new round of escalating tension and they are doing this deliberately", in remarks quoted by the Tass news agency.

"They are in every possible way provoking Ukraine to continue this senseless war."

Russian forces have made gains in the Kharkiv region in recent weeks after a surprise offensive in the area, close to the border with Russia.

The UK and France had already signalled they were open to easing restrictions on Ukraine striking military sites on Russian territory, before US President Joe Biden said on Thursday night that American-supplied weapons could be used.

However a US official told the BBC: "Our policy with respect to prohibiting the use of Army Tactical Missile System [ATACMS] or long-range strikes inside of Russia has not changed.”

German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said on Friday that Berlin was "jointly convinced" that Ukraine had the right to defend itself from Russian attack.

"To do this, it can also use the weapons supplied for this purpose in accordance with its international legal obligations; including those supplied by us," he said.

Germany has not yet given Ukraine its powerful Taurus missiles, whereas the UK has provided Storm Shadow missiles and France has handed over its Scalp cruise missiles.

Russia claimed on Friday that it had pushed Ukrainian forces back by up to 9km (6 miles) from the border in the Kharkiv region, adding that it now controlled hills near the village of Lyptsi. Kharkiv is little more than 30km from the Russian border.

Map of Ukraine

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken repeated his message from earlier this week, that the US would continue doing what it had done until now, "which is, as necessary, adapt and adjust".

He was speaking to reporters at a meeting of Nato foreign ministers in Prague, where the alliance's Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, welcomed the decision to ease restrictions on Ukraine's use of weapons.

Questions have also been raised by Nato allies about the possibility of US-made F-16 warplanes being deployed across the Russian border.

Ukrainian pilots have been training on F-16s in recent months and the first planes are expected to reach Ukraine this summer.

Denmark's Defence Minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, has said that its F-16s could be used to target weapons depots in Russia which he described as legitimate targets.

Denmark is due to hand over 19 F-16s to Ukraine over the summer and Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen made clear: "This is not a carte blanche for Ukraine to use the F-16 to make arbitrary attacks into Russia."

On Friday Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen refused to confirm that Danish F-16s could be used over Russian territory. She said the planes were very close to flying over Ukraine, but "we are not going to go into further detail".

The Netherlands has avoided making any clear declaration on F-16s. Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot merely confirmed that the Dutch government would "allow Ukraine to use arms on Russian soil if it's in full self-defence", in line with the United Nations charter.

Belgium's Alexander De Croo ruled out allowing Ukraine to use its F-16s over Russia when he met President Zelensky earlier this week. Mr De Croo was meeting President Biden at the White House on Friday.

Russian officials have made clear their anger at the prospect of F-16s being used over their territory. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that F-16s would be destroyed just like anything else supplied by Nato, and would not change the situation at all.

However, as F-16s had long been used in Nato's "so-called joint nuclear missions", he warned that supplying them to Kyiv could only be seen "as a deliberate signal from Nato concerning nuclear weapons".

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Publishes 2023 “Sail & Sustain” Report Showcasing Progress in Sustainability Initiatives

June 05, 2024 08:30 ET | Source: Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

In addition to underpinning the Company’s “Charting the Course” strategy, the “Sail & Sustain” program reinforces the Company’s commitment to pursue net zero by 2050.

Among highlights, the Company achieves key milestone ahead of schedule with 50% of fleet equipped for shore power, targeting 70% by 2025.

MIAMI, June 05, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NYSE: NCLH) (the “Company”), a leading global cruise company which operates the Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises brands, today published its 2023 “Sail & Sustain” Report, which details the Company’s progress in its global sustainability program, emphasizing the Company’s dedication to driving positive environmental and societal impact. This effort is a cornerstone of the recently unveiled “Charting the Course” strategy, guiding the Company’s mission for guests to “Vacation Better, Experience More.”

"Sustainability is at the core of our 'Charting the Course' strategy, which is built on four key pillars: people, product, platform, and performance, all deeply rooted in the foundation of our Sail & Sustain program. We understand that the success of our business is inextricably linked to the health of our planet and communities, and that’s why we are dedicated to holistically integrating sustainability into our business strategy," said Harry Sommer, President and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. "Our commitment to sustainability drives us to maintain high standards of operational excellence, achieve results responsibly, and create lasting value for our business and stakeholders."

The  2023 Sail & Sustain Report highlights key advancements and commitments across the five pillars of Sail & Sustain: Reducing Environmental Impact, Sailing Safely, Strengthening Our Communities, Empowering People, and Operating with Integrity and Accountability.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has received recognitions for its advancements through the “Sail & Sustain” program, earning accolades such as the ESG Leader Gold Award at the 2024 ESG Shipping Awards, as well as being listed in Forbes’s Best Employer Lists in 2023 and 2024 .

Key highlights from the 2023 Report under each pillar:

Reducing Environmental Impact:

  • Active Steps Toward Climate Action : In 2023, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings introduced short- and near-term GHG intensity reduction targets to guide its path toward net zero by 2050. The net zero ambition applies to shipboard and shoreside operations (Scopes 1 & 2) and the value chain (Scope 3) including supply chain, well-to-wake fuel emissions, business travel, and more. Short- and near-term targets include reducing GHG intensity 1 by 10% by 2026 and 25% by 2030, compared with a 2019 baseline.
  • Expanding Shore Power Capabilities : By the end of 2023, the Company achieved its 2024 target of equipping 50% of the fleet with shore power technology and remains on track to equip ~70% by 2025.
  • Exploring Alternative Fuels : In 2023, we achieved our goal to test 20% of the fleet with a biodiesel blend by expanding tests to four ships throughout the year. Our new target is for 40% of the fleet to test biodiesel by 2024.
  • Boosting Onboard Water Production : In 2023, the Company consumed ~7.6 million cubic meters of fresh water on board, with ~89% produced on board through evaporators and reverse osmosis plants, reducing the need to bunker fresh water. The target is to reduce bunkering by 4% by 2025, compared with 2019.
  • Improving Waste Management : The Company is committed to reducing onboard waste, successfully recycling, incinerating, or donating ~48% of total ship waste in 2023 through innovative technologies, staff training, and stringent recycling programs.
  • Enhancing Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting : Annually, the Company’s Scope 1, Scope 2, and relevant Scope 3 emissions are measured, estimated, and independently verified. Since 2019, emissions data and other climate-related information have been disclosed to the CDP, with the most recent submission earning a climate change score of “B,” higher than the Marine Transport Sector, North America, and global averages.
  • Sourcing Responsibly : In 2023, supplier diversity efforts allowed more than $635 million to be spent with small businesses and businesses with minority, veteran, or economically disadvantaged qualifications.

Sailing Safely:

  • Strengthening Health and Safety Oversight : The Health Safety Environment & Security Committee oversees the implementation of established standards for safe ship operations, pollution prevention, and security.
  • Maintaining Robust Public Health Protocols : Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings operates a comprehensive public health program with a 24/7/365 compliance culture, including external and internal public health professionals who regularly visit each ship.
  • Providing Excellent Medical Care : Each ship is equipped with a state-of-the-art medical center staffed by highly qualified doctors and nurses, providing high-quality care for guests and crew.

Strengthening Our Communities:

  • Committing to Charitable Giving : In 2023, the Company gave nearly $1.6 million in cash, cruise, and other in-kind donations to various causes. This includes significant contributions to disaster relief efforts, such as for the wildfires in Maui, and support for local communities.
  • Recognizing Educators through the Giving Joy Program : Norwegian Cruise Line’s Giving Joy Program honored 20 educators with a free weeklong cruise for their dedication to education and expanded the program to provide discounts and onboard credits for teachers.
  • Supporting Military Families : The Norwegian Military Appreciation Program extends exclusive cruise fare discounts to military members, veterans, and their spouses, with over 220,000 registered since the program's launch in 2022.
  • Supporting Renewable Energy Projects : We successfully purchased 3 million carbon offsets, contributing to 16 projects globally. The offsets not only support our decarbonization journey but invest in cleaner energy sources and local job creation in these communities.

Empowering People:

  • Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: The Company launched a Corporate Leadership Diversity Initiative to reinforce inclusive hiring practices. In 2023, of the new hires and promotions in shoreside positions, 51% and 62%, respectively, were women. Additionally, the Company supports five Team Member Resource Groups (TMRGs) to connect and support employees.
  • Enhancing Employee Benefits : Benefits include fully paid maternity, paternity, and adoption leave, and family planning assistance for full-time U.S. shoreside team members. In 2023, the Company’s team member cruise benefit program was revamped to include new deeply discounted rates at Norwegian Cruise Line and interline rates at Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Operating with Integrity and Accountability:

  • Maintaining Diverse Board Composition : 50% of the Board of Directors’ seats are held by women and/or underrepresented minorities.

2024 elections are ripe targets for foes of democracy

2024 elections are ripe targets for foes of democracy

Russian propaganda is ramping up in a busy global election year , targeting American voters as well as elections in Europe and the Paris Olympics, according to intelligence officials, internet researchers and tech companies.

“Russia remains the most active foreign threat to our elections,” Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines told senators last month at a briefing about election risks.

Influence operations linked to Russia take aim at a disparate range of targets and subjects around the world. But their hallmarks are consistent: attempting to erode support for Ukraine, discrediting democratic institutions and officials, seizing on existing political divides and harnessing new artificial intelligence tools .

"They're often producing narratives that feel like they're throwing spaghetti at a wall," said Andy Carvin, managing editor at the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab, which tracks online information operations. "If they can get more people on the internet arguing with each other or trusting each other less, then in some ways their job is done."

U.S. elections face more threats from foreign actors and artificial intelligence

Some efforts have been linked directly to the Kremlin, including a network of fake accounts and phony news websites given the name Doppelganger , whose operators have been sanctioned by both the U.S. and the European Union.

The origins of others are still unknown, such as the fabricated video of State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, in which reporters' questions and Miller's response about U.S. policy in the Ukraine war were faked, likely with the help of artificial intelligence. The video circulated on Russian Telegram channels and was picked up by Russian state media and government officials, according to The New York Times .

Russia employed tactics such as exacerbating existing divisive issues and creating fake accounts posing as Americans in its 2016 and 2020 election-meddling efforts, researchers say. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022, discrediting Ukraine and amplifying voices in the U.S. and other countries that oppose aid to Ukraine and support for NATO has become a dominant theme of the Kremlin's efforts.

AI fakes raise election risks as lawmakers and tech companies scramble to catch up

"What you can see is they are referencing politics in a certain country, and they are generally tying that to what is going on in Ukraine. The underlying message is, 'Here's why people should not support Ukraine,'" said Ben Nimmo, principal investigator on OpenAI’s intelligence and investigations team, who previously led global threat intelligence at Facebook's owner, Meta.

Fake accounts, phony websites

The Kremlin relies on what Haines called "a vast multimedia influence apparatus, which consists of its intelligence services, cyber-actors, state media proxies and social media trolls" to pump out propaganda, launder fake and misleading news articles and circulate conspiracy theories.

Facebook takes down Russian network impersonating European news outlets

Facebook takes down Russian network impersonating European news outlets

Since the invasion of Ukraine, the European Union has banned Russian media outlets including RT, Sputnik, Voice of Europe and RIA Novosti from publishing or broadcasting within the bloc. That hasn’t stopped RT articles from proliferating across hundreds of other websites widely available in Europe, according to a recent report from the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the University of Amsterdam and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue.

"We discovered RT articles reposted to third-party websites targeting audiences from Iraq to Ethiopia to New Zealand, often without any indication that the content was sourced from a Russian propaganda outlet," the researchers wrote.

Perhaps the most persistent and prevalent Russian online operation is Doppelganger. First identified by researchers at the EU DisinfoLab in 2022, the campaign has impersonated news outlets including the U.K.'s The Guardian , Germany's Der Spiegel , The Washington Post and Fox News, and it has posed as NATO, the Polish and Ukrainian governments, the German police and the French Foreign Ministry.

In addition to operating fake accounts and phony websites, the operation purchased Facebook ads targeting French and German audiences with messages about aid to Ukraine, farmers' protests and the war in Gaza, according to the European nonprofit AI Forensics .

Doppelganger has also set its sights on the Paris Olympics, Microsoft said in a report this week. It used fake French-language news sites to push claims of corruption in the Games' organizing body and to warn of potential violence.

In March, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned two Russian companies identified as being behind Doppelganger — Social Design Agency and Structura — as well as their founders, saying they carried out the campaign "at the direction of the Russian Presidential Administration."

The misinformation-tracking company NewsGuard has connected a separate network of 167 websites "masquerading as independent local news publishers in the U.S." to a former deputy sheriff from Florida who now lives in Moscow.

Using AI tools to create propaganda

The volume of posts, articles and websites that Russian-linked operations produce is being boosted by artificial intelligence — another new factor that sets 2024 apart from previous election cycles.

OpenAI, the company behind generative artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, announced Thursday that it had taken down influence operations tied to Russia, China and Iran.

In a first, OpenAI removes influence operations tied to Russia, China and Israel

Covert influence campaigns based in Russia, as well as in China, Iran and Israel, have begun using AI in their attempts to manipulate public opinion and shape politics, according to recent reports from OpenAI, Meta and Microsoft .

A Russian operation that Microsoft calls Storm-1679 used AI to fake actor Tom Cruise's voice narrating a phony Netflix documentary disparaging the International Olympic Committee.

According to OpenAI, Doppelganger has used its AI tools, which include ChatGPT, to translate articles into other languages and generate social media posts and comments. Another Russian operation, dubbed Bad Grammar, used AI to debug code for a program that automatically posted on Telegram.

The question remains: How effective are Russia's attempts to influence public opinion and democratic elections?

Many online operations that have been publicly identified haven't reached large audiences of real people, researchers say, and AI hasn't made them any more convincing — at least not yet.

"It's absolutely true that when you look at an individual campaign, it's just as likely as not that it hasn't had a huge amount of influence, which is why Russia just does it again and again, or in a different form, or targeting a different group," the Digital Forensic Research Lab's Carvin said. "It's almost like producing cheaply manufactured goods and just getting it out there in the world, hoping that maybe one particular gadget ends up becoming the popular toy of the season, even if the others completely fail."

Many researchers who study disinformation warn against seeing the hand of Russia as an all-powerful puppeteer, especially since so much of what its mouthpieces amplify is homegrown.

"Any potential narrative that's being argued in a given political environment is fodder for Russian operations — which in itself can sound a little crazy and conspiracy-ish," Carvin said. "And in some ways you risk creating a … situation where absolutely everything that's happening online is all Russia's fault."

But, he added, "at the same time, Russia has a lot of resources at its disposal and it's willing to experiment in different ways to see which things stick. … Why not try all of the above and see where it takes you?"
