How Tom Cruise and Wolf Blitzer Pulled Off the Biggest Twist in Mission Impossible History

Inverse talks to the team behind Mission: Impossible — Fallout’s unforgettable opening sequence.

Would you believe Tom Cruise if he told you the world had ended? What about Wolf Blitzer? That’s the question audiences faced in 2018’s Mission: Impossible — Fallout . But just like in any good Ethan Hunt adventure, the truth is never what it seems.

The Mission: Impossible movies know how to pull off an opening. Whether it’s Tom Cruise hanging off a rust-red mountain , or Tom Cruise pulling off a mask to reveal his true identity, or Tom Cruise… you get the idea, this is a franchise whose fans expect to be glued to their seats from the moment the Paramount logo appears on the screen.

Fallout is no different. A Mission: Impossible audience is never entirely sure that any character onscreen is who they say they are. Being tricked is the name of the game. And for the sixth film in the franchise, Cruise and company decided to fool the audience with a delicious trick involving one of the most famous newsreaders on the planet. As the film’s production designer, Peter Wenham, tells Inverse , “The Wolf Blitzer of it all was a bit of a coup.”

Anatomy of a Scene

We won’t be recapping the entire scene with all its twists and turns here (for that, just watch the video above), but here’s a rapid-fire synopsis: Fallout opens with Hunt, Luther (Ving Rhames), and Benji (Simon Pegg) facing off against a terrorist who’s got his hands on some nuclear warheads. The meeting goes sideways, but after capturing the nuclear scientist in a fight that leaves him unconscious, the Impossible Missions Force hatches a plot: trick the villain by making him think he’s already won.

To pull it off, they build a fake hospital room (and a fake CNN anchor desk), put Benji in a super-realistic Wolf Blitzer mask, and somehow record fake footage of the Vatican smouldering in the aftermath of a nuclear blast. It works, of course, and as the good guys celebrate and the bad guy’s jaw hits the floor, that familiar music begins to play. Roll opening credits.

Tricking the Audience

Wolf Blitzer in Mission Impossible Fallout

Wolf Blitzer confirms the worst possible news.

As editor Eddie Hamilton points out, when the audience is by Ethan at the television, “We’re starting to fool the audience a little bit about the fact that these attacks may have happened; people are like, ‘Blimey, this movie got dark really quickly.’” Because editing is all about point of view, it was crucial to ensure that from this moment on, the audience saw the scene almost entirely from Delbruuk’s perspective, so they were as oblivious as he was about the illusion. “As you’re editing, you’re constantly making sure you’re cutting back to his reactions, so you feel everything that he is feeling.”

The scene was filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, just outside London. Hamilton remembers seeing Gal Gadot walking out in full Wonder Woman costume at one point. “I remember just stopping in awe at this Amazonian goddess in front of me and just staring at her for 10 seconds,” he says. “And she smiled at me and waved and walked off. It was the most astonishing sight.”

Mission Impossible Fallout

“It’s fun to feel the villain realize that he’s been fooled and also the audience has been fooled.”

The faux hospital room was designed by Wenham and his team. He estimates that the whole thing, including the fake CNN set in which Blitzer sat, took around 50 people four weeks to make. When the Impossible Missions Force reveals that the room was purpose-built to deceive Delbruuk, the four walls collapse, unveiling the truth to the scientist.

“You don’t need that in the story because you’ve got the information,” says Hamilton, “but it’s fun for the audience to have that reveal, and it’s fun to feel the villain realize that he’s been fooled and also the audience has been fooled.”

As the walls had steel frames, they needed to fall onto dampeners because they weighed at least 400 pounds each. During filming, they only needed to do it twice, having rehearsed it a good deal before.

Assembling the Team

Mission Impossible Fallout

“Every second of every frame is valuable.”

Blitzer was “completely thrilled to be invited,” Hamilton says. “He thought it was a hoot.”

As Wenham points out, the anchor’s involvement lent credibility to the whole idea — both to the audience and to Delbruuk. This isn’t an anonymous presenter, so the assumption is that it must be real news footage. Blitzer arrived on a jet, did his lines impeccably, and, according to Wenham, was gone within about 24 hours. After the film, Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie organized for the Blitzer mask to be delivered to his CNN office in a purpose-built glass cabinet so that he could display it.

The whole scene took around seven-and-a-half hours to film, according to Hamilton. Actors will often give between 50 and 70 variations of each line, and he and McQuarrie spent more than a day looking at every single nuance of every performance.

“We did modulate how angry Ethan got, ranging from very angry and absolutely manic to much less angry, and we kind of found a medium ground. It wasn’t Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon .” The first assembly of the footage was around two minutes longer than the five minutes it would eventually become. “Every second of every frame is valuable,” Hamilton says.

As for music, composer Lorne Balfe remembers that McQuarrie wasn’t far off, singing to him in order to communicate what he had in his mind.

“There’s a lot of information being given,” says Balfe, “and we tried lots of different rhythms and more melodic ideas, but he felt like it was clashing significantly with the dialogue.” They settled on what Balfe describes as two chords repeating back and forth — simple so as not to affect the dialogue — and gradually building in intensity.

As the reveal happens, the audience begins to smile, and Delbruuk begins to turn white. Hamilton reveals that Delbruuk’s final line — the confused “The attacks didn’t happen” — was recorded after the scene was filmed. This was because “people weren’t 100 percent clear that the attacks hadn’t happened,” and the film couldn’t continue with the audience not being absolutely sure.

Just before this, Lalo Schifrin’s infamous theme music slowly begins to come in.

“It starts off with one bongo player,” says Balfe, “and then another one joins in, and then another one, and then another one, and another one. The way we recorded was that it was in a half-moon shape, so the sound goes from left to right, so that in the cinema, you hear it the way we recorded it.”

In the end, says Balfe, around a dozen bongo players were involved in the drumroll, with the strings contributing their notorious interjections.

“It basically just starts giving the audience permission to have fun.”

uhr tom cruise mission impossible

Keith Langston

Official JustWatch writer

Next year audiences will get to see the next installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, which is scheduled for a summer 2025 release. If you want to watch (or re-watch) the previous movies before then, check out our guide revealing where to stream every Mission: Impossible film in order.

The Mission: Impossible series is actually one of the longest-running action franchises in cinema history, going on almost 30 years since the original movie premiered in 1996. Centered around a team of elite spies, Mission: Impossible grossed over $180 million at the box office, becoming a bonafide hit…that’s only gotten bigger as the years have gone on.

To date, there have been seven Mission: Impossible films, with the highest-grossing being 2018’s Mission: Impossible - Fallout which earned a whopping $791 million globally. Tom Cruise has led every film and the franchise has also accumulated some other recurring characters, including ones played by Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, and Ving Rhames. Other famous faces who have held roles throughout the series include Thandiwe Newton, Henry Cavill, and Angela Bassett, among others.

While each film is different and has its own plot (and largely its own unique ensemble cast), every entry in the series is filled with action, espionage, and secrets. The most recent movie in the franchise, Dead Reckoning Part 1 , focuses on an AI entity that’s gained sentience, granting whichever governmental power owns it total control of the world. As a global chase begins by the world’s most powerful nations, it’s up to IMF agent Ethan Hunt (Cruise) to ensure it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

The story will pick up with Mission: Impossible 8 next year, with many fans eager to see how the story concludes. If you want to catch up on the series before then, check out our guide below to find out where you can stream all seven Mission: Impossible movies.

Berühmte Filmuhren: Tom Cruise' klassische Casio und 14 weitere Szenen-prägende Modelle

Von Finlay Renwick

Ryan Gosling in The Grey Man

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Ewiger Kalender (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, 2022)

Cool!

Gelbgoldene Rolex Cosmograph Daytona (Wolf of Wall Street, 2013)

Jonah Hill mit Rolex Uhr in Wolf of Wall Street

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore ( Trainwreck , 2015)

LeBron James Amy Schumer in Dating Queen

Schick.

Casio DW290-1V ( Mission Impossible , 1996)

Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible

Bremont Kingsman Special Edition ( Kingsman: The Secret Service , 2014)

Taron Egerton in Kingsman

Omega Speedmaster ( The American , 2010)

George Clooney in Der Amerikaner

TAG Heuer Carrera ( The Grey Man , 2022)

Ryan Gosling in The Grey Man

TAG Heuer Monaco (Le Mans, 1971)

Hamilton Ventura Auto ( Men in Black: International , 2019)

All Mission: Impossible Movies, Ranked By Tomatometer

“Hey, Tom. Paramount here. Yes, the studio. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create a new summer franchise out of a 30-year-old TV show, and have it virtually improve with each sequel over 20 years…”

And so Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt has halo-jumped, rock-climbed, motorcycle-duelled, and face mask-revealed his way across dozens of countries to unravel all manner of world threats in the Mission: Impossible movies. He’s had help along the way, featuring a cast of series veterans, like Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, and occasional players like Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton. Hunt hasn’t had too much help from the IMF, though, considering how many times they think their star employee has gone rogue.

A trademark for most of Mission: Impossible ‘s lifespan was bringing in a new director for each entry, ranging from John Woo to Brad Bird to Brian De Palma, giving each entry a unique spin. But Since Rogue Nation , Cruise (who also produces) has found a perfect collaborator in Christopher McQuarrie. He was the first to direct two M:I s in a row, with Fallout raking in the series’ best box office and critical marks. And McQuarrie is directing the next two films: Dead Reckoning – Part One releases this Friday, with Part Two  out June 28, 2024.

Tom Cruise has no plans to stop playing Ethan Hunt anytime soon.

The actor, 61, has said that he wants to keep making Mission: Impossible films until he is Harrison Ford ’s age, comparing his franchise with Ford’s Indiana Jones .

Cruise told the Sydney Morning Herald : “Harrison Ford is a legend. I hope to still be going. I’ve got 20 years to catch up with him.”

He continued: “I hope to keep making Mission: Impossible films until I’m his age.”

Cruise was 34 years old when he first played super spy Ethan Hunt in 1996’s Mission: Impossible . The character was two years younger than the actor.

Streaming service Disney+ removes original movie 48 days after release

In the years since, he has starred in seven sequels, the most recent of which – titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One – is out later this week.

In comparison, Ford was 38 when he played Indiana Jones for the first time in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark .

He was 80 years old in the fifth and most recent addition to the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny , which was released on 28 June.

Hayley Atwell and Tom Cruise in ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One'

Cruise now appears to have ruled out any notion that the forthcoming sequel, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two – which is due for release sometime next year – will be his last outing in the role.

At 61 years old, Cruise appears to be in superb health. He continues to perform his own extreme stunts for the action franchise and does so also in Mission Impossible 7 .

In the new film, Cruise is seen speed flying – a sport in which participants use a small paraglider wing to rapidly descend great heights, such as mountains.

Cruise spent years training for the sequence, which is described as one of the most dangerous the actor has ever undertaken . The crew were said to have watched him speed fly in “absolute terror”.

Elsewhere in the interview with Sydney Herald , Cruise addressed his recent social media post urging cinemagoers to watch two of his summer box office rivals: Barbie and Oppenheimer .

The two films – directed by Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan, respectively – are due for release on the same day (21 July).

“I want to see both Barbie and Oppenheimer ,” he said. “I’ll see them opening weekend. Friday, I’ll see Oppenheimer first and then Barbie on Saturday.

“I grew up seeing movies on the big screen. That’s how I make them, and I like that experience; it’s immersive, and to have that as a community and an industry, it’s important.”

Initial reviews for Dead Reckoning are overwhelmingly positive. In a four-star review of the film, The Independent ’s film critic Clarisse Loughrey writes : “The film is a mirror image of its star – a muscular, extravagant, thoroughly old-school work of ingenuity and craft.”

The security personnel may theoretically be cleared for that classification but they would not have a "need to know" the information contained within AND video surveillance visible in another area would defy the measures taken to keep the information in a secure room. However, a simple device to lock out the keyboard, of any other I/O devices or ports, when there was no authorised operator officially present, would be simple to implement, very efficient, and pose zero potential for information leakage.

It's no secret that Tom Cruise is serious about his stunt work, and in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One , he wasted no time taking on a death-defying scene!

Cruise sat down with ET's Nischelle Turner in Rome this week to preview the upcoming action flick, and he shared an interesting fact about the production, revealing that the  most dangerous stunt of his career -- a motorcycle jump off of a cliff into a base jump -- was the first-ever scene filmed for Dead Reckoning Part One .

"Well, we know either we're gonna continue with the film or we're not," Cruise said with a laugh of planning the death-defying stunt. "Let's know day one... Do we all continue, or is it a major rewrite?"

In all seriousness, the actor added, it all came down to focus. "It was years preparing. I mean, I've been riding motorcycles since I was a little kid, raced cars and spent a lot of time just with aerobatics, airplanes, helicopters and parachutes... It all kind of came to that moment."

"You have to be razor sharp when you do something like that, so it was very important as we were prepping the film that that actually was the first thing [to shoot], because I don't want to drop that and go shoot other things and then have my mind somewhere else," he continued. "Everyone was prepped, let's just get it done."

And it wasn't just the one stunt that Cruise was hyper-focused on throughout the film's production. He did his own stunt driving for an intense chase scene throughout the streets of Rome -- while his character was handcuffed to franchise newcomer Hayley Atwel l, no less -- saying the challenges he takes on as a performer are indicative of his devotion to the action-packed franchise.

"Mission: Impossible is the first film I ever produced," he recalled of the impact the films have had on his career, dating back to the 1996 original. "There's certain things that I felt that we could tell with motion, with action and with stories and to be able to travel the world, that I really wanted to- I hoped that I could be able to accomplish with Mission: Impossible."

" I really always wanted to travel the world and be part of that community and then celebrate that community," he added. " Mission: Impossible allows me to do that."

Cruise's legacy as a box-office star is without question, and he hit a new major milestone last year, when Top Gun: Maverick became his first film to bring in over a billion dollars, bringing his career total box office to over $10 billion.

"You know, it was important last summer because of what we went through in [COVID shutdowns]," he noted. "For me, I love movies on the big screen and we have, you know, our families, how it spreads out to the other platforms, I understand that, but the way that I make movies, what I love about films is -- and I've always been someone who's promoted the big screen experience -- I make movies for audiences and to see how much they enjoyed it."

"To see [ Maverick ] open up the way it did, it meant a lot to me in so many ways," Cruise continued. "I mean, for me, when we're in Cannes, I was looking at all of [the cast]. I was like, I want you to have this experience. I wanted them to have that kind of experience, that we all worked hard and we all created this together. It was very special."

And, no surprise, he's not planning to slow down anytime soon. While Cruise and Mission: Impossible writer-director Christopher McQuarrie still have some work to do on Dead Reckoning Part Two --  due out in June 2024 and set to be Cruise's final bow as Ethan Hunt -- the actor said they're already planning for what comes next.

"A few days ago, I turned to McQ like, you know, we've got to start thinking about what we're gonna do next summer when we're done with this," he shared with a laugh. "This is what I do, I make movies... I absolutely love it."

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is in theaters July 12.

Mission: Impossible 6-Movie Collection (4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital)

Table of Contents

Started as a Classic TV Series, Now a Box-Office Movie Franchise

The Mission Impossible franchise didn’t start as a big-budget action movie – it was first a popular TV series. The first Mission Impossible TV series ran from 1966 to 1973 and the second one ran from 1988 to 1990. The first movie was released in 1996 and, except for including the character of Jim Phelps (the MIF leader in the television series), was a complete overhaul from its TV counterpart. However, the iconic Mission Impossible theme, the lighted fuse intro, and self-destructing messages were kept intact.

Only One Character from the TV Series Made it to the Big Screen

The character of Jim Phelps, played by Peter Graves in the series and was re-casted to Jon Voight in the movie, is the only original character to appear in both the television and movie adaptation. However, the portrayal of the character differs greatly in both adaptations. While Jim Phelps was the honorable leader of the MIF in the TV series, the movie version painted him as a more malevolent and manipulative light who turned out to be the main antagonist of the first film.

Tom Cruise did the Majority of His Stunts

For an A-list actor, you would think that Tom Cruise would leave the dangerous action scenes to his stunt double – well, you would be wrong. For most of the big action-packed sequences in the Mission Impossible film series, Tom Cruise decided to do it himself. From scaling the highest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, to hanging from outside an airplane as it is taking off – Tom Cruise did those stunts himself. You can imagine the absolute anxiety that the director might have been feeling during those scenes as the last thing you’d want is for your lead actor to go splat.

For a character like Ethan Hunt who utilizes a slew of high-tech gadgets at his disposal, you would expect him to have a collection of modern and multi-functional timepieces to help accomplish his missions. We will be going through each of the six installments of the Mission Impossible film franchise and see what type of watch Tom Cruise wore for each entry.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) – Tudor Heritage Chronograph

Tudor Heritage Chronograph Automatic Black Dial Men's Watch M70330N-0005

In the fourth installment of the spy-action film series, Ethan Hunt can be seen wearing a Tudor Heritage Chronograph timepiece instead of a Casio watch. As the plot of the film heavily involves infiltrating a dangerous criminal organization, it is logical for Ethan Hunt to also wear a more luxurious yet equally reliable timepiece to complete the façade that the character was going for. As for the timepiece itself, the Tudor Heritage Chronograph brings a certain level of sophistication with its aesthetics. Case in point, the ribose-style grey hour markers, and striking black dial. The Tudor Heritage also features an automatic movement with an analog dial display. It comes with a 42mm stainless steel case with a bi-directional rotating bezel and a water resistance of up to 150-meters.

Tom Cruise wasn’t the only one wearing a well-known watch brand in Ghost Protocol. Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and William Brandt (Jeremy Renner) are also seen wearing a  Casio G-Shock GX-56-1B  and a  Rolex Submariner Date  respectively during certain scenes in the movie. Again, the wristwear choice reflects both characters with Benji leaning towards the more modern and multi-functional watch (Casio) and the CIA operative, Brandt, having a more professional and classier timepiece (Rolex).

Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018) – CWC GS Sonar Watch

uhr tom cruise mission impossible

The latest entry into the Mission Impossible series, Fallout, gives Ethan Hunt a more rugged and traditional timepiece in the form of the CWC (Cabot Watch Company) GS Sonar Watch. In a Mission Impossible movie that might have the most exhilarating ‘race against time’ scene in the franchise, the CWC GS Sonar Watch is the perfect companion for our intrepid special agent operative. The CWC GS Sonar features a 38mm satin-matte stainless-steel case and is equipped with an ETA 955.102 quartz movement with an analog dial display. Simple, classy, and tough – the CWC GS Sonar is an excellent outdoor timepiece for when hiking, camping, or saving the world from mass destruction.

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’s” infamous train scene was meant to take place aboard the Orient Express, as it roars through the Swiss Alps; which for production is a big request if you’re not shooting on location.

“We scouted a few places and ended up in Norway,” says the film’s cinematographer Fraser Taggart who also worked on “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”

After showing a proof of concept and explaining that safety precautions were in place, the shoot was approved. Taggart’s biggest challenge was navigating how to make the motorcycle jump and fight work. Furthermore, Taggart didn’t want the film to have a “Hollywood aesthetic to it. The environment’s low light lent itself to the gritter look he was after. One decision was not to shoot on film. While the previous films had been done on 35 mm, it wasn’t going to happen this time around. He explains, “We would have to stop the train every two minutes and reload. We would need 200-foot mags on the cameras. On digital, they could have shot for 30-40 mins.”

To pull the fight scene off, there were hydraulic rigs that would tilt up to 30 degrees, so physically everyone was being affected by gravity. Says Taggart, “It’s still hugely dangerous because you’re so high up. but to make it practical the cameras are 100-150 feet in the air.”

Tom Cruise talks the making of Mission: Impossible with director Christopher McQuarrie in exclusive interview clip

Exclusive! Director Christopher McQuarrie interviews Tom Cruise to mark the first Mission: Impossible's anniversary

Mission: Impossible is fast approaching its 25th anniversary. To celebrate, Tom Cruise sat down with Mission: Impossible 7 director Christopher McQuarrie to discuss how the first film came into being – and we have an exclusive clip from the conversation between the two.

Cruise brought the role of Ethan Hunt to life in Mission: Impossible, which debuted in '96. It was also the first film the actor had produced.

"I looked at Paramount and I thought what I wanted to produce was something – I looked at it in many different ways… I wanted something that was going to be very commercial, potentially, but I wanted something that was going to be artistically challenging," Cruise explains.

"What is the challenge of this thing going to be? I wanted it to be an international film, and an international cast," Cruise adds. "Which at that time was different. I wanted to shoot it in England... I remember they said, 'Can't you shoot it in LA, or New York?' And I was like no, I actually, I want to go to London."

Mission: Impossible, directed by Brian De Palma, launched an action-packed, star-studded franchise – with one of cinema's most recognizable theme tunes – and is still going strong all these years later, with the seventh movie in the series set to arrive in 2022 (the pandemic pushed it back from its original July 2021 date).

McQuarrie is both writer and director of the seventh installment, and has previously helmed Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible – Fallout – and is also writing and directing Mission: Impossible 8.

The seventh movie's cast includes, along with Cruise, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Vanessa Kirby, Indira Varma, and Angela Bassett.

  • Action-packed scenes feature Cruise sprinting to save the world from rogue AI, captivating audiences globally.
  • Mission: Impossible 8 plot remains a mystery, but it will likely continue the story with The Entity and familiar faces.

Hollywood icon Tom Cruise is back to doing what he does best, running, as the actor films scenes for the action sequel Mission: Impossible 8 in London, England. Fans of the actor and the franchise have now taken to Twitter/X to share images, footage, and their thoughts on Cruise’s running, which somehow remains one of the most gripping elements of modern blockbuster moviemaking.

You can check out the visual poetry that is Tom Cruise running below, as well as some thoughts and feelings shared by fans who cannot wait to see him run all over the world once again in Mission: Impossible 8 .

Several images of the actor sprinting either away or towards the latest global threat have also emerged, and offer our first look at the next Mission: Impossible sequel, which was formerly titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two before changes were made behind the scenes .

Released in July last year, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is directed by Christopher McQuarrie from a screenplay he co-wrote with Erik Jendresen. The Mission: Impossible follow-up finds Tom Cruise back as Ethan Hunt, who this time must save the world from a rogue AI known as “The Entity.” You can check out the official synopsis and trailer for Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning below.

“Ethan Hunt and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: to track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With the fate of the world at stake, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.”

What Will Mission: Impossible 8 Be About?

It is currently unknown exactly what Mission: Impossible 8 will be about but, considering that movies 7 and 8 were initially intended to be a two-parter, we can no doubt expect the next movie to carry over some of the plot elements from its predecessor. This likely includes both the AI enemy known as The Entity , and the villainous Gabriel (Esai Morales), a terrorist with ties to Ethan Hunts's past. We can also expect to see the core cast return, including Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, and Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, as well as newcomer Hayley Atwell as Grace.

How the Mission: Impossible Title Change Could Save the Franchise

A title change has given the Mission: Impossible franchise a new lease on life.

The rest of the ensemble will reportedly include Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, Pom Klementieff as Paris, and Shea Whigham as Jasper Briggs, alongside Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, and Lucy Tulugarjuk. Following the apparent fate of Ilsa Faust , it is currently unknown whether Rebecca Ferguson will be involved.

Mission: Impossible 8 is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 23, 2025, by Paramount Pictures.

This Tom Cruise Movie Missed the Target at the Box Office — But Its Hitting the Bullseye on Netflix

The Big Picture

  • Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning has found success on Netflix after struggling to outdo its hefty budget at the box office.
  • Despite its box office woes, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.
  • The shift towards digital consumption has given the film a second chance to shine and attract new fans.

Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt might be known for pulling off the impossible, but the latest mission didn't quite skyrocket at the box office. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning , co-written and directed by franchise veteran Christopher McQuarrie , initially seemed like it couldn't dodge the box office bullet. But much like Ethan Hunt escaping an exploding Kremlin, the seventh installment of this adrenaline-fueled saga has found a new avenue for victory: Netflix.

Nearly a year after its theatrical release, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning has surged back into the spotlight, climbing Netflix's Global Top 10 chart for the week of June 10-16. With 5.6 million views and a staggering 15.3 million hours clocked in, it secured the third spot, nestled comfortably behind Four Brothers and Hit Man . While it isn't available on Netflix in the United States — where it continues its mission on Paramount+ and MGM+ — the international Netflix audience has embraced Ethan Hunt's latest escapade.

Despite garnering a hefty $567 million worldwide, Dead Reckoning faced an unexpected challenge that even Ethan Hunt might struggle with: the double whammy of Barbie and Oppenheimer (affectionately dubbed "Barbenheimer") releasing the following weekend. The simultaneous drop of these cinematic heavyweights overshadowed what was supposed to be a dominating performance for the IMF crew.

How Good Is 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning'?

Critics and audiences alike hailed Dead Reckoning as one of the franchise's finest, boasting a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score and a 94% audience rating . These accolades placed it just a notch below the revered Fallout , but the $291 million production budget, which reached such a height due to COVID constraints , demanded more than just applause. To break even, the film needed to rake in $582-727 million — a mission made nearly impossible by pandemic-induced delays and stiff competition.

Though the theatrical run didn't hit the expected highs, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning is doing what Ethan Hunt does best : adapting and overcoming. Its resurgence on Netflix isn't just a testament to its lasting appeal but also a reminder of the shifting landscapes of film consumption. With audiences now binge-watching Hunt's fight against the rogue AI known as the Entity, the film is experiencing a renaissance.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning may have stumbled at the box office, but its digital success underscores a vital truth in today’s entertainment world: the game isn’t over when the credits roll on opening weekend. With its gripping action sequences and edge-of-your-seat plot twists, it’s no wonder fans are flocking to Netflix to catch Ethan Hunt in action once more. Stay tuned to Collider for more. International fans can catch the film on Netflix and U.S. readers can head over to Paramount+ .

With each new film, Cruise insists on doing his own stunts , taking it upon himself to risk his life in increasingly, treacherous sequences for the quality of the finished product. At this point, Cruise is a bona fide stunt performer whose bravery in dangerous stunts allows the capture of unique moments not seen in other movies.

Luckily, Cruise's training, dedication, and ambition, coupled with experts' guidance, film direction, and stunt coordination make these sequences as safe as possible so that Cruise's stunts can get even bigger. Nonetheless, unpredictable elements and variables and there being nothing Cruise won't do for a Mission: Impossible stunt make them life-threatening. Here are 14 of the most dangerous times Tom Cruise has risked everything to make Mission: Impossible's audience's pulse race.

14 Helicopter-Train Jump in Mission: Impossible

Seemingly shot before Cruise had a death wish, the stunts in Mission: Impossible seem tame compared to that of the franchise's later entries. However, that's not to say there weren't a few perilous moments, and one that stands out is during the film's climax. After tussling with Jon Voight's villain Jim Phelps on top of a TGV bullet train and jumping onto a helicopter that soon explodes, Cruise's Ethan Hunt then jumps back onto the train.

This stunt was filmed on a sound stage in Pinewood Studios using a wind generator firing dangerous winds of 140 mph to emulate the blast. Considering his stunt career trajectory, Cruise was initially reluctant to include the stunt. Therefore, this stunt could be the origin story of his passion for doing his own Mission: Impossible stunts. After completing the jump four times, Cruise was bleeding, bruised, and cut; however, it was a sign of even more danger to come.

13 Cable Drop in Mission: Impossible

One of the most iconic scenes, not only in the Mission: Impossible franchise, but in spy movies, sees Hunt rappel down from the ceiling into a locked-down room. Breaking into Langley, the CIA's headquarters, Hunt is lowered into the room to avoid triggering alarms. As if this weren't dangerous enough, Hunt's wire lifeline is also let go by Franz Kreiger, causing him to plummet to the ground and stop just inches from the floor.

The stunt was all about balance, as Cruise discovered quickly, repeatedly overbalancing and thwacking his head on the floor. Brian De Palma was about to shoot the scene differently when Cruise filled his shoes with pound coins for counterbalance and got the shot. Though this sequence is not one of Cruise's most dangerous stunts, hanging and falling 40 feet from the ceiling for days and repeatedly enduring blows to the head isn't exactly health and safety conscious.

12 Aquarium Explosion in Mission: Impossible

Another entry from the movie that started it all, this stunt involves Cruise outrunning 16 tons of water bursting out of an exploding aquarium. After learning that he's been double-crossed, Hunt makes his escape from his untenable position by throwing a piece of exploding gum at a fish tank in a Prague restaurant. After stunt specialists delivered underwhelming attempts, de Palma grudgingly let Cruise undertake the sequence.

It says something about Cruise's body of stunt work that this one is low down the list. The aquarium sequence was incredibly dangerous when taking into account the water, shattering glass, and miscommunication regarding the exact timing of the stunt. Although Cruise limped away with a hurt ankle (not for the last time), the stunt made for a spectacular scene.

11 Casablanca Bike Chase in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

In a movie with such iconic stunts, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation's bike chase is somewhat eclipsed. The thrilling sequence sees Hunt racing after Rebecca Ferguson's Isla Faust, first by car and then on a BMW S1000RR motorcycle. Although Hunt's chase is unsuccessful and Faust escapes, this sizzling pursuit around the extreme turns of the Casablanca highway put Cruise's life firmly in danger.

Having started riding motorcycles at the age of 10, it is no surprise that Cruise is keen to use them in his stunts. Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie even wrote the script around this motorcycle chase, and it pays off as it injects a high-octane punch brimming with raw danger. Cruise rides up to 130 mph and leans over sometimes just inches from the ground, and all without a helmet.

10 Paris Bike Chase in Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Mission: Impossible - Fallout somehow managed to outdo its predecessor's motorcycle chase, but this time Hunt becomes the hunted. For this sequence, Cruise and his fellow biker stunt performers abandoned their safety rigs, meaning that did the whole chase by free riding. All the turns weaving in and out of oncoming traffic and going well above the Parisian speed limits executed by Cruise, were all as dangerous as they look.

Hurtling through the streets at over 100 mph with cars and bikes pursuing and coming at him head-on sounds like enough to deal with, but McQuarrie revealed Mission: Impossible - Fallout's motorcycle chase was more perilous than it seemed. Between numerous automotive variables, slippery wet cobblestones, and cameras seeking close-ups at stomach-turning speeds just inches away from his head, it's amazing Cruise escaped from shooting this sequence without a scratch. Further, a miscommunication problem with the local stunt drivers meant they sometimes failed to hit their mark.

9 Free Climbing Cliffhanger in Mission: Impossible 2

The opening of the franchise's second film establishes that even in Hunt's time off between missions he enjoys getting his heart pumping. It is during some R&R mountain free climbing at Dead Horse Point in Utah that Hunt gets his mission that sets up M ission: Impossible 2 . Despite safety precautions taken by the film's production, it shows what Cruise is made of.

Unlike his adrenaline junkie character, Cruise wore a safety rope throughout the sequence, however, the margin of error was so chillingly slim that even director John Woo had to look away. The only scene where the free climber in the shot isn't Cruise is when Hunt almost slips and tumbles between two cliffs. Other than that, it's really him hanging off the red rocks, 600 feet above a talus slope and a further 2000 feet from the ground. It's a precarious, impressive feat and a great opening sequence.

8 Roof Jump in Mission: Impossible - Fallout

One of the most famous stunt accidents in recent years, Cruise's ankle break occurred while filming a relatively straightforward stunt in London for Mission: Impossible - Fallout . As he leaps from one building to another, misjudging it horribly, Cruise clatters into the building's side and bends his foot nine ways to Sunday.

Though it might not seem as dangerous as the other stunts on this list, as anyone who has seen the nauseating footage of the injury can attest, this jump looked very painful. It was also an expensive injury, as Cruise was unable to continue filming it halted production for seven weeks and cost the studio $80 million. This was of the few times a Mission: Impossible stunt has gone wrong, and it shows how real the stakes are and that Cruise is, in fact, human.

7 Eye-Watering Knife Fight in Mission: Impossible 2

A similarly disturbing stunt that features in Mission: Impossible 2, and the risk was even higher. During the third-act battle, Dougray Scott's villain Sean Ambrose tries to sink his very sharp knife into Hunt's eye. To ensure maximum realism, Woo wanted Scott to genuinely push down with all of his force onto Cruise's eye. During the stunt, the blade gets as close as a quarter-inch away, Cruise being protected only by a steel cable attached to an overhead rig. Needless to say, if these cables malfunctioned, the consequences could be at the very least life-changing and at the very most life-ending.

6 HALO Jump in Mission: Impossible - Fallout

The mission in Paris in Mission: Impossible - Fallout begins with a high-altitude low-open jump that goes awry when Henry Cavill's character August Walker's oxygen supply malfunctions. The sequence is breathtaking and its realism is palpable with Cruise's face alight as he exhibits both expert skydiving and high-caliber acting. It's the fruit borne by hard work and sheer nerve in the face of danger, and not just from Cruise.

Falling from 25,000 feet, Cruise, Cavill's stunt double, and a videographer jumped 106 times (including rehearsals) and shot the sequence in three-minute takes, once per day, to ensure the dusk lighting was perfect. The scene is three takes stitched together, each more dangerous than the last. Jumping out of the plane is hazardous enough, and there was a serious risk of colliding with Cavill's double when filming Hunt plummeting to Walker's aid. Finally, during the take in which Hunt saves Walker, Cruise had to judge the height at which to stop providing him oxygen and deploy his parachute.

5 The Airbus Scene In Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

During the comic opening scene and plane stunt of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation , Benji Dunn fails to remotely open the door to let Hunt onto a plane in Minsk, Belarus. This gave Cruise the opportunity to perform a stunt in which he clings to the side of an Airbus A400M plane as it takes off. The scene follows Hunt ascending thousands of feet into the air; as the seconds elapse the danger proliferates.

Considering Cruise was bolted to the plane via a harness, at speeds of 260 mph, birds and debris became the biggest dangers. Indeed, the actor was actually injured by a pebble at high speed. The stunt is even more terrifying considering that, according to McQuarrie, Cruise was wearing earplugs and contact lenses, meaning he couldn't see or hear. Further, the toxic fumes from the engine added potential long-term effects to the mix.

4 Helicopter Chase in Mission: Impossible - Fallout

During the Mission: Impossible - Fallout helicopter chase stunt , Hunt finds himself on a rope hanging from a moving helicopter, eventually crawling up the rope to fly it and chase Cavill's character. Again, all that stands between Cruise and certain death, as he hangs out of the side of the helicopter, is a harness. That said, what makes this sequence especially dangerous is the proximity to which the two helicopters come to each other.

Cruise piloted the helicopter himself after becoming certified in an unusually accelerated timeframe and training hard for 16 hours per day. Moreover, flying in dim seasonal light Cruise got as close as a few feet from the other helicopter's rotor blades. It was so dangerous that director McQuarrie has said that he wouldn't have begun filming the sequence had he known beforehand what it took to capture.

3 Underwater Heist in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

In Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation , Hunt and his team are tasked with swapping a file in an underwater database. When he fails to open the escape hatch, Faust must come and save him to prevent him from drowning. This extremely dangerous stunt had real stakes; both Cruise and Ferguson risked their lives holding their breaths while exerting themselves, burning through oxygen at a rapid rate.

Cruise's underwater Rogue Nation heist stunt was filmed in a succession of continuous shots, meaning the actors had to train to hold their breath for over six minutes. According to McQuarrie, by the end of the stunt's 10-day shooting schedule, Cruise was spent, with nitrogen in his blood and brain fog so bad that he couldn't memorize his lines. As if this life-threatening sequence weren't enough, Cruise also had to perform a jump off of a 120-foot ledge to get Hunt into the subaqueous security system.

2 Climbing the Burj Khalifa in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

The franchise's most memorable stunt saw Cruise climbing the side of the Burj Khalifa , the tallest building in the world. In Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol Hunt had to 11 floors of the 2,722-foot skyscraper to get to the 130th floor with only adhesive gloves, one of which fails. Though secured with a harness, Cruise actually performed this climb almost half a mile in the air, including the part where he plummeted when the glove failed.

Both the scene and the shoot itself were a race against the clock. It was time sensitive to film, as Cruise's harness was at risk of cutting off the actor's circulation, and it doesn't tend to be easy to breathe at that height. This stunt is the epitome of danger, a truly petrifying feat; nevertheless, the sensational scene speaks for itself.

1 Motorcycle Jump in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Cruise himself has labeled the marquee motorcycle cliff stunt Mission: Impossible 7 as the greatest in cinema history. It's a stunt he's wanted to perform since he was a child, and is the most dangerous yet. It certainly delivers the wow factor in the film's trailers.

Shot in Norway, the stunt involves Cruise riding his motorcycle off of a cliff, propelling into a nosedive, and deploying a parachute. Cruise performed 13,000 training jumps for the sequence to ensure he could execute it with the precision required. This Evel Knievel-like jump that's been all over the marketing campaign has unquestionably piqued fans' interest in the eagerly anticipated next Mission: Impossible installment.

'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One' lauded for action-packed drama: 'Impeccably made'

uhr tom cruise mission impossible

"Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" has yet to rocket into theaters, but the film is already shaping up to be a tour-de-force action flick as far as critics are concerned .

The Christopher McQuarrie-directed action thriller starring Tom Cruise , set for a July 12 release, had its global premiere at the Spanish Steps in Rome on Monday. Cruise, looking dapper in an all-blue suit, appeared on the red carpet alongside his "Dead Reckoning" castmates, including co-star Hayley Atwell .

The latest film in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, "Dead Reckoning" follows the adrenaline-pumping stunt shenanigans of Cruise's superspy Ethan Hunt as he wards off deadly forces.

So far, the film has earned rave reviews from critics for its stunning action sequences and compelling performances.

Erik Davis of Fandango called "Dead Reckoning" an "impeccably made action film that does not stop entertaining."

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

" Each action sequence is long, crazy and intense, " Davis wrote on Twitter. "The story is big and sprawling, but I like how it both felt complete and left you dying for what comes next."

Perri Nemiroff of Collider said the film is "another winner for the franchise," including the addition of "Mission: Impossible" freshman Atwell.

"Tom Cruise is A+ as always and Rebecca Ferguson continues to be a favorite, but franchise newcomer Hayley Atwell wound up being the major standout for me," Nemiroff tweeted . "She can do it all. Action, comedy, a capable hero in many respects while trying to get her sea legs in others."

While Screen Rant's Joe Deckelmeier commended the film's action, he also noted how "Dead Reckoning" incorporates new technology into the film's plot. " With (artificial intelligence) being the villain, this feels like a cautionary tale, " Deckelmeier wrote on Twitter.

Germain Lussier, a senior entertainment reporter at Gizmodo, wrote that the film "gets a little dense at times, but its pace and intensity more than cover that."

" 'Dead Reckoning Part One' is fantastic, " Lussier tweeted. "Huge variety of action and a final set piece that ranks top 2-3 all-time for the franchise."

Tom Cruise ‘lends’ Mission: Impossible crew to Rick Astley for new music video amid Hollywood strikes

Rick Astley has Tom Cruise ’s Hollywood film crew working on his latest music video.

The “Never Gonna Give You Up” singer, 57, announced last week that Simon Pegg was directing the visuals for his new single, “Forever and More”.

He explained on BBC Breakfast on Monday (16 October) that he and Pegg, 53, had linked up after “sharing some love” at a festival.

“He jumped in and did it, he came up with a great script and a whole concept and idea. It was just a great couple of days to shoot it,” Astley said of filming.

Pegg has now starred in six films in the Mission: Impossible franchise as field agent Benji Dunn opposite Cruise’s protagonist, Ethan Hunt.

On Breakfast , Astley revealed that Pegg had roped in the M:I film crew to work on his video as they are currently in limbo due to the ongoing SAG actors’ strike in the US.

“We’ve gone from iPhone to Hollywood – it’s a crazy jump,” the singer said.

The Sun further reports that Cruise himself gave Pegg the green light to borrow his film crew.

A source told the newspaper: “Tom has worked with a number of them on many films so he wanted to be loyal and help out during tough times.

“After discussions with Simon and the label, he’s got them all to cross over and work on the video. Rick is delighted about it because they have lofty standards and could produce something extraordinary.”

The video was reportedly shot on Monday in a secret location in the UK.

Astley released his ninth, and long-awaited, studio album Are We There Yet? On 13 October.

In an interview on BBC North West Tonight earlier this week, the Merseyside artist said he has “learned to quietly embrace” the success of his 1987 smash hit “Never Gonna Give You Up” after “15 years of not singing it”.

Astley said the song had opened “so many doors” for him – including his debut Glastonbury performance this year.

“Without my old songs and without the Rickrolling thing with its own little universe, I wouldn’t have got the invite to Glastonbury.

“It was really, really special [and] I defy [anyone] to be on the Pyramid stage and not feel the enormity of it,” he continued.
