I’m constantly surprised to never hear about Outdoors RV, who only produce Four Season RV’s. Is there a problem with them?

I would be helpful if you expanded your Cold Weather/Four Season review to 20 or 30,…listed in order of best quality. Even that doesn’t guarantee an Outdoors RV mention,…but it would suggest that it isn’t in your top 20 or 30.

The windows are another area where RVs are prone to heat loss. Even an RV with high R-Value insulation installed in the walls, ceiling, and floor can still lose a lot of precious heat through conduction with single-pane windows. 

If you are going to be staying in extreme cold temperatures with your RV and you don’t want to overtax your furnace, then you should prioritize an RV that has double pane windows or some type of other thermal rated glass.

This is especially true for ice fishermen and full-timers who travel in the northern states during the winter. 

If you are just planning to use your RV for camping in mildly cold weather of the fall, for something like a weekend camping trip, and the forecast is calling for an extreme cold snap, you might be able to temporarily duplicate dual pane windows.

This could be as simple as covering them with clear plastic window insulation as you find in winter home window kits. 

3: A Heated & Enclosed Underbelly

As I alluded to earlier, the underbelly of an RV is one of the most vulnerable places on an RV that is called upon to endure extreme cold weather.

The underbelly does serve a wide range of purposes, though arguably the most important for an extreme cold weather RV is its ability to protect the water storage tanks and the water lines from freezing. 

Right off the bat, an RV with an enclosed underbelly with insulation will go a long way toward not only keeping the RV’s interior floor from getting cold, but it also helps to prevent water tanks and water lines from freezing.

This is great if you are going to be staying at temperatures between 20 to 32-degrees Fahrenheit for a night or two. 

If you are going to be staying in cold temperatures below 32 degrees or even below 0 degrees for a day or more, then you really should prioritize an RV with an enclosed and insulated underbelly with a heating system included.

This is usually a small electric resistor system that gently warms water storage tanks and water lines to prevent freezing as well as dangerous ruptures. 

3: Pex Water Lines

Water starts to expand as it transitions from 39 degrees down to the freezing point at 32 degrees.

When it hits 32 the rate of expansion as it transitions into ice can apply excess force on the water lines and connections.

Since water is incompressible, this force has the potential to rupture the water lines causing major damage to not only the RV plumbing but other nearby components that are exposed to water when the ruptured lines are thawed later. 

Pex piping is a relatively new innovation. This is a special type of water line material that expands a little bit to accommodate the expansion of water into ice.

They might be a great upgrade to an RV with an exposed underbelly or part of an extreme cold RV that needs a little added insurance factored into an already enclosed and insulated underbelly.

4: The RV’s Furnace

The propane furnace in the RV is by far the most important element of an RV that needs to withstand extreme cold weather.

The BTU rating or British Thermal Units is the standard measure for how much heat a furnace can put out in an hour.

For most mid-size RVs like a 20+ foot travel trailer or a fifth-wheel trailer, you want to see a propane furnace that is rated to produce at least 30,000 BTUs per hour.

The larger the RV the higher you want the BTU rating to be. Some larger RVs will sport up to 40,000 or even 45,000 BTU per hour propane furnaces.

You also want to see a higher BTU rating in an RV that might have a lower R-Value insulation. 

5: The Distribution Of Heat Ducts From An RV Furnace

The number of heat ducts in an RV is a lesser-appreciated feature in RVs that can withstand extreme cold weather.

An RV with a small number of ducts tends to have hot and cold spots. Over time the cold spots in an RV, especially those near the floor can lead to progressive heat loss that overtaxes the RV’s built-in propane furnace. 

If you fall in love with an RV that has a small number of heat ducts, or you’ve noticed problems with hot and cold spots in your RV on cool fall evenings, you might be able to temporarily improve heat distribution by installing one or two small 12-volt fans.

Try to position them up high near a heat duct. Set the fan on low and point it toward the cold spots on the floor.

This will help circulate the air in the RV during cold weather without creating a heat depriving draft.

The Truth About 4 Season Winter Packages in RVs, Trailers, Campers and Which is the Best for 2022

Something that goes hand in hand with many RVs is the famed 4 seasons winter package. After all, you wouldn’t won’t to have your freedom limited by the elements right? There is a problem though, and you have likely run into it if you are searching for an RV. It seems like every manufacturer offers something unique: the ‘Polar Package’, ‘Arctic Wolf’, ‘4-Season Extreme Thermal Package’… the list goes on and on.

With so many options it can get a little confusing. You don’t want just any winter package, but the best one. It would be impossible to determine who makes the best RV winter package without clarifying a few things though. So, let’s do look into this.

First, some basics about winter packages:

In just about every state here in the USA there is a code and standard for insulation when building a home. When it comes to the RV industry, there is no standard or code for insulation, however, making it very difficult to know whether or not you have the best all seasons package.

Most packages have a couple things in common. They will enclose the underbelly with a corrugated plastic sheet, possibly toss in a thin slice of heat reflective material and hopefully have heated tanks. This would be considered a great 4 Season Winter Package.

This travel trailer didn’t even have heated tanks. I hope this helps explain my point. A shiny sticker and fancy name doesn’t mean a cold weather package is going to keep your trailer from freezing. You’ve got to inspect the RV and see for yourself.

Black Series Insulation

 Let’s inspect and review the insulation of a Black Series trailer (all the caravans are insulated the same- HQ19, HQ17, HQ15, C15, HQ12 and C12).

In early 2020 they started wrapping the lines which is a great improvement. Coming from Australia, they really haven’t had to worry too much about the cold. They are learning that here in the USA we camp in the cold! 😂

Here on the Black Series you can see the sewer exit valve is wrapped.

The windows are polycarbonate dual pane.

The Black series are a step up from the average travel trailer, but even the Black Series caravans are not built or suitable to be used in freezing temperatures.

There is a trade-off with everything. The Black Series are built with aluminum stud framing. There is no wood in the walls or ceiling. While this is MUCH superior to wood as far as quality and durability, it will not keep the cold out as well. Having an aluminum frame allows the cold to transfer inside quite easily.

The Best Trailer for Cold Weather and Winter Camping

In the end you need to inspect each trailer claiming a winter or 4 seasons package. Look at the underbelly and take a peek above the enclosure. Check out the windows to make sure they’re dual pane. See if the tanks have heated pads and if the sewer exit valve is enclosed or wrapped.

This is going to help in your search much more than giving a list of the current trailers and fifth wheels with the best ‘acclaimed’ winter package.

Propane heaters release substantial amounts of moisture into the air, so steer away from these resources. Should the heating pads on your water tank or the additional insulation in your RV fail, these electric heaters will be sure to keep you and your RV at an agreeable temperature.

2. RV Skirt

No matter the kind of cold weather you end up in, it is important that you find a way to skirt your RV. Even if you had the underside of your used RV enclosed with an upgrade in your arctic package, any amount of damage to the underside of your vehicle will have you looking at thousand dollar repairs. Skirting your RV as soon as you arrive on site will help to trap warm air beneath the vehicle.

3. Dehumidifiers

As we live, cook, and dry out in our warm, insulated RVs can quickly begin to fill with moisture and feel quite humid. Not only can this water condense and freeze to your windows and cupboards, but exposing your vehicle to that much moisture can encourage mold and mildew growth in your RV.

To avoid these problems, it is important that the inside of your RV stay as dry as possible. One simple way to do this is to crack a vent every few hours. Just be sure you have vent covers installed. Another solution is to purchase dehumidifiers like DampRid to pull excess moisture out of the air.

It sometimes feels that summer is over in a heartbeat and before we know it we’re stuck into long cold nights and short cool days. One minute we’re basking in tropical heat and then within a week, we’re being battered with freezing rain and gale-force winds.

Maybe I’m showing my age, but the summers seem to be getting shorter, and the winters are getting longer. December is just around the corner, the kids are getting excited for Santa and the temperature will probably continue on its downward trend with no chance of warming up anytime soon.

Common sense dictates that most of the shelf RVs are not meant for exploring the Antarctic. If you’d like to take your RV out during colder weather, you’ll probably need to invest in what’s commonly named an Arctic package. These will normally upgrade the existing insulation and provide additional heating for the enjoyment of the RV passengers and drivers.

However, there are certain models of RVs that have been designed and built with the colder weather in mind. These vehicles are meant to be taken out when the mercury drops, through icy gales and even in some cases, snowy roads. Cons : We’re hard-pressed to find any faults with the Bighorn, it’s a seriously impressive piece of kit.

7. Keystone Raptor

Another brilliant camper trailer on our list is the Raptor. As you would expect from a brand such as Keystone, you’ll receive a ton of features, including artic packages to choose from. Additionally, you may choose some optional extras.

The Raptor has a range of eight intelligently designed floor plans to pick from. All designs feature the same basic rooms, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms, however, the exact layout and the amount of room dedicated to each room changes based on the chosen floor plan.

Providing a comfortable and warming environment is the MaxFlo air conditioning unit which can pump out an impressive 15k BTUs. This will keep you warm and toasty during even the biggest cold snaps.

Pros : If you’re looking to buy a Keystone trailer, then we think the Raptor is an obvious choice. Once you’ve chosen your ideal floor plan and you’ve cranked up the heating, you’ll have no excuse for not heading out for a winter adventure.

Cons : None that we can find. The sheer popularity of the Raptor is a testament to its capabilities.

8. Heartland Landmark Newport

If you choose to buy Newport with the Yeti Package equipped, you’re buying the most capable and beloved Arctic packages that are available. The package is, of course, optional, but if you’re serious about taking your RV out in cold weather conditions, it’s an obvious choice.

Coupled with the away-from-home package, your RV is going to remain in tip-top condition regardless of how many times you choose to take it out. Read on for some of the outstanding innovations that are available as standard:

• A power bed with inbuilt reading and convenience lights
• A lockable and secure safe
• A generously equipped kitchen including an oven

Pros : Taking into consideration the Yeti Package, the Newport is a seriously capable and comfortable cold-weather RV. It is continually mentioned when the best four-season RVs are discussed. It’s without a doubt the premier artic package available to buy.

Cons : You’ll need to pay for the package which can make it a pricey purchase.

9. Northwood Arctic Fox

Very few arctic campers are as popular known or held in such high regard as the Fox. The reason for this is simple enough, the Arctic Fox accomplishes what it was set out to do and contains a ton of helpful features. Let’s take a closer look:

• Built into the bedroom are USB charging ports, as well as a well-proportioned mattress and carpeting throughout
• A fully function bathtub with a skylight and foldable shower screen
• A foot-operated toilet
• Powerful extractor fans in the bedrooms

Perhaps the best-known cold-weather RV, the Montana is a legend in its own right. People have and still do live all year round in this capable vehicle. Just because the temperatures are freezing and the days are short does not mean that you cannot enjoy camping in your RV. However, RV camping in colder temperatures is quite different from camping during other seasons.

Having the right information will ensure that you enjoy a safe and relaxing camping trip. The information contained in this cold weather RV FAQ section seeks to answer the most frequently asked questions about winter RV camping.

1. How To Use An RV When Temperatures are Freezing

The most important step to take to ensure a great RV camping trip is to prepare your RV for the rigors of winter weather camping. Not all rigs are designed to take winter weather in stride. Below are some steps you should take in order to RV camp in freezing temperatures.

Air-seal and Insulate the Doors and Windows

RV doors and windows can be poorly insulated and air-sealed and are major sources of heat loss during cold weather. The best way to air-seal your doors is to add some weather stripping around the door frames.

Using a piece of insulating fabric or blanket, create a full-length curtain for your doors. You can also do the same for the windows. Insulate your windows further by installing double or triple-paned windows, plastic film insulation, and thick fabric curtains.

Insulate the Ceiling Vents

You will require ventilation to replace humid internal air with drier external air. Insulate and plug the ceiling vents with something that seals them but can be easily removed.

To insulate ceiling vents, invest in factory-made vent plugs. You can also use rigid insulation, which you cut to the size of the openings and wrap with duct tape to strengthen it.

Insulate the Plumbing and Electrical Openings

It’s essential that you seal and insulate the areas around electrical openings and plumbing on the outside of your RV. Use expanding foam insulation for large gaps and caulk for smaller gaps. Be careful when using foams since they can expand and cause damage. Always go for low-expansion foams typically used around windows and doors.

Skirt Your RV

Including skirting in your RV serves to reduce heat loss from the areas underneath the rig. There is a wide range of commercially available skirting solutions built from a variety of materials such as rigid insulation and plywood.

Insulating your skirting with rigid insulation will help keep the area under your RV warm. This will, in turn, keep your floor warm and prevent freezing underneath the rig. It is advisable to bury the skirting a few inches underground if the area is not frozen. Doing this will reduce airflow and add stability.

Prepping the Water Systems

Before embarking on a winter RV camping trip, empty the black and gray water tanks. Add approximately a quart of special RV antifreeze (not the type used in cars) to the tanks. Doing this will prevent freezing in the dump valves.

Ensure that you insulate all the pipes draining into the tanks. If you will be RV camping in cold weather for an extended period, you may consider including electrical pipe heaters. Note that these will require a generator or electric hook-up.

You may also invest in AC (120V) or DC (12V) holding tank heaters. Always insulate the sewer hose to prevent the formation of ice dams. It is advisable to empty the tanks periodically instead of continuously. Purchase a heated water hose in case you utilize a freshwater hook-up. These will help avert freeze-ups and bursting. All cables and hoses should be kept off the ground and out of snow.

Always Have Emergency Items

Many things can go wrong when RV camping in cold weather. Even the best planning may not help you avert unforeseen circumstances. Below are some items that can help you out during emergencies:

• Extra blankets
• Tire chains
• Weather band radio
• Winter rated Sleeping bags
• Drinking water in the heated storage space
• Extra propane tanks
• Emergency GPS system
• Solar charging panels
• Blow drier for defrosting tanks and pipes

2. How can I Insulate RV windows For Cold Weather?

The windows are one of the major sources of heat in RVs. This is also true for homes, apartments, and office buildings. Insulating your RV windows can make a huge difference in keeping the RV warmer. There are three main ways that you can insulate your RV windows. They include plastic insulation films, triple-paned windows, or double and curtains.

Double or triple-paned windows are windows that have small gaps between the panes. These gaps are usually filled with gas, which helps trap heat. This design helps keep the heat in and your RV warmer. Double or triple-pane windows also reduce heat transfer and condensation issues. If your RV has these features then that is great news. You can have these windows installed if your rig does not have them. Alternatively, there are several ways that you can create the same effect. You can use thick plastic films or Lexan on the outside of your windows.

Add heat-shrink or plastic films on the inside too to reduce cold air filtration and heat loss. Invest in curtains that provide some insulation value as well. Polar fleece or quilted fabrics are great options. You can purchase them at fabric or retail stores.

You can seal the curtains to the wall with fasteners such as Velcro to reduce air drafts. Ensure that you cover the windows that you are not using for light. You can use rigid foam insulation to seal these windows and reduce heat loss considerably.

3. Will a Cold Weather Package Help When Storing the RV?

This all seasons RV by Lance is certified for cold and warm weather driving. The Lance RV is another brilliant option to consider for wintertime road trips and journeys. This particular RV is certified for both cold and warm weather driving, and it hones some fantastic season features, such as

Winter features are as follows:

• Azdel insulation instead of wood. This insulation is made from a thermoplastic composite that prevents rot, mold, and mildew that often results from wood being exposed to wintry, wet conditions. Honestly, RV lovers will be exceedingly happy with Heartland’s Bighorn range. I do not find any cons to mention currently.

The LM Arlington by Heartland comes complete with a Yeti Extreme Cold Weather Package. This is a very popular arctic package available on the market and it is optional. So let´s see if it has advantages for us or it is just a well-envisaged sales pitch.

This particular RV, a leading all seasons RV, as we just said, offers the option of having the famous ‘Yeti Extreme’ winter weather package, which is arguably the most popular cold-weather artic package. Yes, the Yeti may be optional, but it certainly is not one you want to disregard if you will use your camper in winter. Additionally, the home comfort features that are available with this RV will ensure that it maintains its pristine shape regardless of how often it is used. A few of the basic features, although nothing is basic with the Heartland LM Arlington core package are:

• Backlit tile backsplash
• Lockable safe
• High coffee table
• Stainless-steel oven
• Bedroom reading lights

Although the LM Arlington can have the Yeti Extreme Cold Weather Package, it does come at an additional cost, but it is a worthwhile feature if you will use your all seasons RV in winter.

Keystone, like Jayco, is another brand that deserves two entries on this list with the Raptor, which is one of the top ten all seasons RV models. Apart from the normal features expected from the brand, including an arctic package, there are also various extras.

What Temperatures Are Four Season RVs Rated For?

RVs and campers with cold weather and four-season attributes may have various ratings. However, the generally accepted rule of thumb equates to comfortably living and sleeping in temperatures below 20°F and above 90°F. Oftentimes, hotter temperatures aren’t a consideration when choosing four-season RVs.

But when you think about it, all of that premium insulation is just as effective at keeping the heat out as the cold. There are virtually zero campers out there that will maintain a sustainable, comfortable interior temperature in a consistently sub-zero environment—maybe for a night or two, but no longer.

Who Needs a Four Season RV?

The Arctic Wolf is sold as an all-seasons RV camper. It ticks all the boxes you could imagine as an RV aficionado. This is especially true with the six different floorplan options.
