Review: BurgerTime World Tour (PS3)

It was a bit surprising to see that a developer was taking on an update to the classic BurgerTime. It’s a series that hasn’t been around for a long while , and it’s a series that wasn’t all that great to start with. But that’s exactly what MonkeyPaw have done with BurgetTime World Tour, and they’ve done a respectable job at that.

In the original BurgerTime the idea was to climb up and down ladders and walk over the various components of a burger in order to drop them down on top of one another, and eventually make a complete burger. While you’re doing that you also need to avoid the games enemies, such as the sausage, the fried egg, and the pickle. It’s a very abstract concept but as an arcade game it kind of works.

BurgerTime World Tour has all of that, but that’s just a starting point. Levels are much larger than the single-screen affair of yesteryear, and they’re not nearly as bland. The ladders are still there, but now there’s also moving platforms to jump on, spikes to avoid and floating letters to collect while walking over those buns and beef patties. With the addition of a jump button the game has made a significant deviation from being an arcade experience to becoming a more platforming game, and the variety in level design across the game is truly impressive. BurgerTime World Tour keeps throwing fascinating challenges to the players right through to the end.

The enemies are back, as is the ability to throw pepper in their faces, but the addition of the jump button also means it’s possible to avoid the enemies by soaring over their heads. It takes a strong sense of timing though. The biggest failing of BurgerTime World Tour is its controls. They’re sticky and somewhat unresponsive, meaning it’s quite easy to move too far or two little and as a game that requires a surprising amount of precision this can be frustrating.

Also upping the frustration meter is some of the quirks of the new level design. Moving platforms are a fun idea, but when the levels include enemies that act as homing missiles, waiting for a platform to move into place to jump on it is a luxury that isn’t really there. Because the camera is zoomed fairly close in it’s hard to properly plan out a level to take that into account as well. These are all problems players will encounter in just the first few levels, too, and so the difficulty curve is quite steep.

Persevere with the game though and it really does become charming. The characters are big and colourful, and there’s some amusing cut scenes to break up the level progression. Music is a little generic but inoffensive, and there’s even some multiplayer modes on offer. Unfortunately the online multiplayer already seems dead so the only way to play will be likely through your friends list.

Just as it was back with the original arcade game, BurgerTime World Tour is throwaway entertainment. There’s nothing especially memorable about the game, but aside from some control issues, it’s not a game that’s going to upset either. Good as a weekend filler.

BurgerTime: World Tour is a reworking of the 1982 game BurgerTime in a 3D environment. It is a platform game where players control burger chief Peter Pepper as he transverses international worlds creating burger piece by piece across its city-scaping levels including New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Mexico. The objective is to complete a set amount of burgers in a level by walking over its various ingredients and condiments such as patties, cheese, tomatoes and buns from high platforms all the way to the burgers already assembled at the very bottom of the stages.

Levels are shaped in a circular form as a theater-in-the-round setting and they rotate as the player moves left or right, keeping the main character in the center of the screen. Movement between levels is done with ladders and platform while enemies such as eggs, hot dogs, and pickles need to be avoided. They can be sent down by dropping ingredients on them and they can also temporarily be stunned by blasting pepper. A single hit and the main character dies. Peter Pepper also has various power-ups and weapons at his disposal, including a spatula which will knock enemies who follow him around the stages. The game has both split-screen and online multiplayer.

Burgertime: World Tour is a platformer developed by Monkeypaw Games and a modern re-imagining of the classic franchise . Like in previous games, you control everybody's favorite chef Peter Pepper as he tries to make the perfect burger. The game retains the formula of the original: you must jump around platforms, making a top bun fall from the top of the level to the bottom where it must land on the bottom bun. On the way, Peter must collect the burger and condiments while avoiding peppers and eggs. Unlike the original however, the levels are now in 3D and contain new obstacles such as spikes. Peter runs around on a sort of cylinder, even using jet packs to get around, in his search for the perfect burger.

The game features over 50 levels including boss fights that take place around the world. The game also has a 4 player split-screen or online multiplayer mode.

BurgerTime World Tour

MonkeyPaw Games announced on April 15th, 2014 that BurgerTime World Tour would be delisted on all platforms on April 30th, with the game being discounted to $4.99 until then. Ryan Olsen, then the PR Manager for MonkeyPaw Games, commented on the delisting stating:

Removing a game is never something we like to do, but it is part of the nature of working with retro game franchises. For those that have yet to snack on the game, we are offering it at a tasty price before BurgerTime World Tour is taken off the menu. Ryan Olsen, MonkeyPaw Games

BurgerTime World Tour was delisted on Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 on April 30th as planned, but still remains available on PlayStation 3 as of February 2022, possibly due to an oversight. BurgerTime World Tour was also made available on the OnLive streaming service on August 14th, 2012 and was likely removed on the same date as the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 versions.

The game was delisted due to expired licensing between MonkeyPaw and G-Mode, the current IP owners of BurgerTime.

An all-time arcade favorite gets a second helping as BurgerTime World Tour elevates classic gaming to the next-gen universe. Hero Peter Pepper returns and traverses the globe challenging chefs from around the world. Gamers will tackle 50 total levels and boss fights in each of the four environments. For the first time ever, the game will also feature online and split-screen multiplayer modes for four players with online leaderboard and avatar support. BurgerTime has never been more meaty!

BurgerTime World Tour release date

Revamped arcade relic out next month.

BurgerTime World Tour launches on Xbox Live Arcade on 2nd November priced at 800 Points, developer MonkeyPaw Games has announced.

The 21st-century take on the 1982 arcade platformer adds a rotating 3D environment, online play, boss battles and avatar support.

The game is also due out on PC, PlayStation Network and WiiWare, though no firm dates for those platforms have been confirmed yet.

"MonkeyPaw Games has always believed that classic gaming experiences should transcend their original space and evolve into a larger world for the current gaming generation," commented MonkeyPaw boss John Greiner.

"We're thoroughly excited to bring a maturation of a classic game like BurgerTime and give fans a taste of our recipe for retro evolution."
