About The Place :  Of the 42 islands, the only ones that visitors are permitted to enter and explore are Pirotan Island, which is easier to access and therefore more popular, and Narala Island, which lacks infrastructure and can only be reached at certain times, when the tide is high enough.

The islands are uninhabited except for the workers at Pirotan Island lighthouse, so enjoy the solitude and use it as an opportunity to lose yourself to the wide world around you. Armed with a little knowledge, you can spend hours walking around the tidal flats at low tide, observing the fascinating marine life as it lies exposed from the receding waters. Some of the creatures, such as jellyfish, are best left untouched. Be sure to ask the park officers what others should be avoided, but don’t be afraid to have a hands on experience with the creatures that are open to it.

At a distance of 10 km from Jamnagar Railway Station, Pirotan Island is an island situated in the Gulf of Kutch near Jamnagar. It is one of the beautiful islands in Gujarat and among the top places to visit in Jamnagar. Spreads over an area of 3 Sq. km, Pirotan Island is one of the 42 islands which compose the first Marine National Park in India. It is one of the two islands in the Marine National Park opened for tourists, other one being Narara Island. Pirotan Island is a gem for the people who love nature and adventure as it gives an opportunity to witness the colourful coral reefs, mangroves, and incredible aquatic creatures like jelly fish, octopus, star fish, sea snakes, hermit crabs, sea horse, sea slugs, green sea turtles and dolphins. One can also spot some beautiful birds such as pelicans, herring gull, sea gull, and black-headed gull in the unruffled setting of nature. Pirotan was originally known as 'Pir jo thaan' signifying the sacred place of Saint Khwaja Khizer Rahmatullahialaih. The holy shrine of the saint is also located on the island. The island also houses a lighthouse. The island is uninhabited except for the workers at Pirotan Island's lighthouse, the forest guard, and the Mujhavar (Server) at the Holy Saint Khwaja Khizer shrine. Most visitors come in the morning with the high tide and leave by evening. So, one can spend hours walking around the tidal flats at low tide, observing the fascinating marine life in solitude. Pirotan Island lies about 7 nautical miles from Rozi Port and 12 nautical miles from Bedi Port. There is no regular ferry service to the island. One has to hire boats from the Bedi port or Rozi Port and it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the island. Since the beach is very shallow, the boats can only reach the island during high tide and leave the island during high tide. The tide timings need to be enquired with the locals as they tend to change with the change in the position of moon. There is no place to stay, no food and no water at the island. The tourists should bring their own food and water as they will have to stay at Pirotan for about 10-12 hours as the High tide usually has a cycle of 12 hours. Before coming to Pirotan one needs to follow a strict official procedure as per which the permission of Forest Department, Customs Department and the Ports needs to be taken. In case of a foreign national, an additional permission from the Police Department is also required. 'Nawanagar Nature Club' organizes 1-day tour to Pirotan Island. Timings: Depends on the tides. In the Gulf of Kutch, Pirotan Island is one of the 42 islands which compose the Marine National Park. India's first national marine park comes under the Jamnagar district of Gujarat. The park gives an opportunity to witness the coral reefs, mangroves, incredible aquatic creatures and beautiful variety of birds in the unruffled setting of nature.

Pirotan lies 12 nautical miles off the coast (Bedi Port) and stretches up to 3 sq km. There are two islands from the 42 which can be accessed by general public; Pirotan Island is the most popular one. Narara is the other island out of the two; it can be reached by road to see the birds, corals and other aspects of the marine life.

Before coming to Pirotan one needs to follow a strict official procedure as per which the permission of Forest Department, Customs Department and the Ports needs to be taken. In case of a foreign national, an additional permission from the Police Department is required.

Attractions This extraordinary national park will take you to another world and give you a glimpse of the extraordinary life under the salty waters of Arabian Sea. The beautiful birds such as pelicans, herring gull, sea gull, black-headed gull and various kinds of waders offer delight. Incredible marine animals like jelly fish, octopus, star fish, sea snakes, hermit crabs, sea horse, sea slugs, green sea turtles and dolphins might just bless you with one of the lucky days of your life. Coral reefs and marine vegetation (mangroves and various flowering plants) will take you under the depths of ocean without even wetting your fingernails.

Pirotan was originally known as 'Pir jo thaan' signifying the sacred place of Saint Khwaja Khizer Rahmatullahialaih. The holy shrine of the saint is also located at the island.

How to Reach Regular ferry service up to the Pirotan Island is not available. A boat needs to be hired from the port that will take about 1.5/2 hours to reach the island. Being a shallow beach, the boat can reach and leave the island only at the time of high tide. The tide timings need to be enquired as they tend to change with the change in the position of moon. High tide usually has a cycle of 12 hours, so once you reach the island, you probably have to spend 12 hours on it.

Important: There is no place to stay, no food and no water at the island. The tourists should bring their own food and water as they will have to stay at Pirotan for about 10/12 hours waiting for the high tide to come.

How about discovering marine life while wading on the shore?

For someone who is looking for solivagant exploration at weekend getaways in Gujarat, I think Pirotan islands should be on their list. They were shut down to public access for few years before being reopened again. The trip started from Bedi port of Jamnagar. We had to reach there by 6 am on a chilly winter morning, about 10 km ride from the main city. Then we were off to Pirotan islands, zig-zagging through mangroves. They consisted mainly of Rhizophora, Avicennia and Ceriops. The sunrise from the boat, amidst the mangroves, was a spectacular sight. The boat ride from the port to the islands took about an hour.

Pirotan is amongst the few accessible islands of the group of 42 islands. "Pir jo sthaan" meaning the resting place of the holy Saint Khwaja Khizer Rahmatullahi Alayh.

Disembarking from the boat, it was a roughly 3 km hike to the lighthouse where the gathering was planned. The morning session was for bird-watching. From the lighthouse till the stretch of about 5 km, you could explore the shore for birds. Unfortunately, I did not have my Canon on the day of the trip. But then I remembered Sean from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, quoting “ Sometimes I don't. If I like a moment, for me, personally, I don't like to have the distraction of the camera. I just want to stay in it.”

And it was totally worth it. Getting closer to the flocks of Crab Plovers, Painted Storks, Ibis, Osprey, Egrets and Herons, with silent movements, lying down on the sand and watching their movements was a wonderful experience.

Post lunch, it was time for exploring towards the sea, wading through a foot deep water. Water level continued to rise as I walked further ahead. Spotting colourful algae, sponges and live corals along the way, I encountered a few crabs. Shy creatures, they are, going under the rocks as soon as they sense our presence. Sighting Jellyfish, Octopus, Starfish and Pufferfish as I waded on, I was nearly 4 km from the lighthouse and near to the sea. It was a great view of blue sea blending with the shallow green beach. It was time for the retreat, for the water level was rising steadily due to the timings of the high tide.

While walking back, flocks of Storks and Flamingoes were flying by towards the islands. I missed my camera more than ever at that moment. Our boat was the last one to leave the island in the evening, post sunset. “Twilight fell: The sky turned to a light, dusky purple littered with tiny silver stars.”

Pirotan Island spreads over an area of 3 square kilometres and is one of forty-two islands in the marine park area, nestled within the vicinity of the Marine National Park in the Jamnagar district of Gujarat on the western coast. As part of the first marine national park - the Gulf of Kutch Marine National Park, established in 1982, Pirotan Island offers an undisturbed rendezvous with nature in its abode. It is one of the two islands in the area which is normally permitted for tourists and visitors, Narara Island being the other one.

With only a handful of people living here which includes people from the forest department, Mujhavar at the Khwaja Khizer Dargah and a couple of people from the lighthouse, this enchanting island is much away from human habitation and way of life and comes close to being ideal if you are looking for a secluded getaway. Although visits require permits from the local Forest Department, Customs & Ports Department, the hassle is entirely worth it. The island is a secluded getaway from the hubbub and commotion of daily life and deserves a space on your bucket list!

Marine National Park - Pirotan

Marine National Park and Sanctuary Pirotan is located in the inter-tidal zone along the coastal area of Jamnagar. The Marine Sanctuary was declared in August 1980 and the Marine National Park in July 1982. Total 10.ll.sq. km of the National Park area and 1.11 sq. km of the Sanctuary area have been notified as reserved forests.

Pirotan island is 18 NM from Bedi port, can be reached through boat.

October to March is the fair period to visit the Sanctuary.

The PA has a great diversity of habitats. The mangroves, coral reefs, degraded reefs, inter-tidal mudflats (lower and higher), creeks, estuaries, sandy strands, saline grassland, marshy areas and rocky islands represent the diversity that harbour a great variety of sea life. The life system here is intricately woven. The diversity of life creates a scene straight from any one’s dreams. The colourful sponges and corals, giant sea anemone, tube anemone, jelly fish, sea horse, octopus, oyster, pearl oyster, sabela, Portugese man of war, starfish, bonellia, sepia, lobster, varieties of crabs and prawns, sea turtle, dolphin, dugongs, porpoise, shark and other fish keep the life pulsating in perfect harmony.

The Marine National Park is in the Pirotan Island, in Jamnagar. Visiting Pirotan Island is a bit different experience, as the tourists need to have several permissions before they can visit the area. Read this article to find out what to expect.

The Pirotan Island Experience

Pirotan Island is a protected marine park, and you need permission from three different offices, the Forest Department, the Customs Department, and the Ports Department. Pirotan Island in Jamnagar is the first marine national park in the country.

But all of that is worth it because of the sheer natural beauty that awaits you. You find flora and fauna, marine life like crabs, sea-snakes, octopus, squid, sea-horse, sea-worms, etc. Because this is a Marine National Park, they are in their natural habitat, and you need to be careful that you are not disturbing them. You can also see several sea birds like the Pelicans, the Harring Gull, the Blackheaded Gull, the Harring Gull, Crab Plovers, and others.

Visiting a Marine National Park, or any national park, for that matter, requires one to be physically fit. Its hours and hours of walking through water currents, lush greenery, so on and so forth.

Also, there won’t be any shops that offer food or beverages, so make sure that you pack something to eat and drink during your time at Pirotan Island. There are no restaurants or even places to stay in the Marine National Park. You will have to make alternate arrangements in Jamnagar.

Pirotan Island is about 20 KM from the Jamnagar area, but it still takes about two hours, as the only way to reach the island is via the waterways. There are several places in Jamnagar that you can visit. However, keep in mind that you will end up spending the whole of the morning and most of the afternoon at Pirotan Island, as it is so vast and unique. So, plan to visit the other places in Jamnagar only if you have a weekend on your hands.

Places Near the Marine National Park

Also, you will spend about 3000 rupees per person at the place, including the boat permits and travel costs. So, it is a bit of a steep outing for a family. On the island, you can also visit the shrine of Saint Khwaja Khijer.

If you are looking for accommodation, the nearest place is Jamnagar. For example, you have the Ashiana Hotel that offers its rooms for under 1000 rupees, as well as the Hotel Prince Presidency. Both these hotels are around 10 KM away from the airport. You also have some guest houses in the vicinity, that offer their rooms at under 1000 rupees. If you are looking for budget stays, look at the dormitories as well that have accommodation at rock bottom prices, some even offering a cot and a place to store your belongings at 200 rupees per night.

The dormitories are excellent options for backpackers and large groups that are traveling on a budget. However, they are not the best on privacy, and they don’t have private washrooms. Also, you might have to make food arrangements somewhere else and return to the dormitory before a specific time. But if you are looking for hyper-budget solutions for your stay in Jamnagar, a dormitory is your best option.

Jamnagar connects well with the other cities in Gujarat and other states. It has a railway station, an airport and connects well via roadways as well.

O f the 42 islands, the only ones that visitors are permitted to enter and explore are Pirotan Island, which is easier to access and therefore more popular, and Narala Island, which lacks infrastructure and can only be reached at certain times, when the tide is high enough.

The islands are uninhabited except for the workers at Pirotan Island’s lighthouse, so enjoy the solitude and use it as an opportunity to lose yourself to the wide world around you. Armed with a little knowledge, you can spend hours walking around the tidal flats at low tide, observing the fascinating marine life as it lies exposed from the receding waters. Some of the creatures, such as jellyfish, are best left untouched. Be sure to ask the park officers what others should be avoided, but don’t be afraid to have a hands on experience with the creatures that are open to it.

How to Reach Here

You can take a boat from Bedi port or Nava port in Jamnagar, for which you should arrive an hour before high tide, and schedule a couple of hours travel in each direction. The tide time changes with the moon, so schedules vary seasonally. Ask locally about boat timings for the specific day you plan to go.
