Things to do in Mandurah and Peel

Getaway to mandurah and peel - the perfect destination for a day trip or short break from perth..

Welcome to Perth's aquatic and adventure playground. Thongs, bathers and a towel are the only essentials required. Alive with holidaymakers year-round the region is filled with the scent of sausages barbecuing on the Mandurah foreshore and the laughter of families as they picnic and play, while adventure seekers head to the forests and waterways of the Murray region.

Mandurah and Peel is just a short train ride or an hour's drive south of Perth City, encompasses the coastal city of Mandurah and the inland shires of Murray (including Pinjarra and Dwellingup ), Waroona and Boddington. The region offers a wide range of activities from exploring vast waterways and national parks, to visiting wineries and bush walking along trails through the Jarrah Forests.

From across the globe, holiday-makers flock to build sandcastles along wide stretches of beach and spot wild dolphins dancing in protected waters. Wetlands teem with black swans and pelicans, the estuary and inlet brimming with blue manna crabs and crayfish. So revered are the claw-clad crustaceans, they have a festival dedicated to them. Hire a boat or jet ski, try your hand at fishing, grab a steak and cook it onboard your own Eco BBQ Boat as you steer your way through Venetian-like canals and the Ocean Marina. Meanwhile, accessible boardwalks invite diners and shoppers to wander and enjoy the sunshine.

Inland from Mandurah, a trailblazing adventure awaits in the Peel region. Raise your oars and launch your kayaks, lace up your hiking boots and pump up your bike tyres, ready for an outdoor adventure like no other. Over recent years, Mandurah has grown from a small seaside town into a lively and cosmopolitan city and is famed for its beautiful waterways and relaxed holiday atmosphere. It’s also the perfect place to base yourself and take day trips out to explore the Peel region.

The waterways provide endless  water activities and tours , such as fishing, swimming, crabbing and kayaking. No trip to Mandurah would be complete without a boat cruise on the vast, silken waters of the estuary. There are several boating options available from chartering your own pontoon to hiring a houseboat. Or you could join a cruise through the award winning canals with  Mandurah Cruises . Be sure to keep an eye out for the wild bottle-nosed dolphins, regular visitors to the Mandurah waterway. Tree lined walkways, grassed picnic areas and safe swimming beaches make it a perfect destination for the whole family.

Pinjarra  and  Dwellingup , situated in the Shire of Murray, are beautiful places to visit boasting a range of adventure activities. Resting on the banks of the tranquil Murray River, Pinjarra is one of the oldest established towns in Western Australia. With its rich grazing lands, the town quickly became known as a centre for dairy and cattle farming. The area is also becoming increasingly celebrated as the country horse racing capital of Western Australia.

If you prefer walking, the Pinjarra Heritage Walk Trail skirts the Murray River and is a fascinating way to view the region. Families can experience a close encounter with native wildlife at  Ranger Red's Zoo & Conservation Park . 23km further inland resides the evergreen forested township of Dwellingup. Here you can take to the Murray River's swollen winter rapids by raft or sedately canoe down its slower moving segments.

Dwellingup is a popular camping destination and you can also hike, moutiain-bike or horse ride along the area’s many trails - information can be found at the  Dwellingup Trails and Visitor Centre . Kids can even enjoy a tree top adventure ropes experience at  Treetops Adventure . The long-distance walking trail,  The Bibbulmun Track , runs through the middle of town and uniquely meets with the Munda Biddi Trail. The Hotham Valley Tourist Railway travels through town every weekend throughout the year and is a magical way to see the tall timbers of the ancient forests.

Located on the South Western Highway, the character township of  Waroona  lies between forest, farmland, lakes and sea. The town itself has grown over the years to encompass cafes, fine examples of colonial architecture, antique shops and art galleries and is particularly well known for Lake Navarino and the Waroona Dam where thrill seekers from far and wide come to water-ski, canoe or fish.

Yalgorup National Park also falls under the shire of Waroona's jurisdiction and covers an area of over 12,000 hectares. The park contains 11 coastal lakes and wetlands which are home to hundreds of migrating birds, some of which have travelled thousands of kilometres to breed and recuperate amongst the areas’ rich eco systems. The park also boasts several stands of rare Tuart trees and some of the first living creatures on earth - the captivating Thrombolite living fossils. Preston Beach at the southern end of the park is a superb location for four-wheel driving, swimming, picnicking or fishing from its pristine white sandy shores.

Food, Wine and Produce

A fantastic array of  dining options  can be found along the waterfront and inland throughout Peel's countryside, catering for all styles of taste and budget. Why not indulge in seafood fresh from Mandurah's waters; be sure to try some of the sweet crab meat for which Mandurah is so renowned.

The Mandurah Boardwalk, which stretches from the picturesque eastern foreshore to the stunning Sebel Mandurah, comprises of quality eateries, bars, accommodation, theatre, cinema, chocolatier, ice creamery, café’s, boat and bike hire and ferry services, all with the spectacular Mandjar Bay frontage. Looking for things to do in Mandurah and Peel in the world of arts and leisure? The state-of-the-art  Mandurah Performing Arts Centre  is a distinctive feature overlooking the waters of Mandjar Bay and showcases a wide range of local, national and international creative talent. Learn about the region's fascinating history and heritage at several sites, including Edenvale Heritage Precinct, Fairbridge Village, Hugh Manning Tractor & Machinery Museum and Mandurah Community Museum.

Local galleries can also be found, including the Mandurah Art Gallery, CASM - Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah, Emma Blyth Gallery, Murray Arts and Crafts Society,  Lost Eden Creative , Liveringa Art Gallery, the Forest Discovery Centre and the  Waroona Visitor Centre & Gallery , which all display fantastic local art. Visitors can also immerse themselves in the local indigenous culture of the area with Goolamwiin.

Adventure and Attractions

Graced with endless stretches of pristine coastline, there are plenty of places to go swimming and surfing right on Mandurah's doorstep. There are also numerous limestone reefs offering a diverse variety of fish which makes Mandurah an ideal spot for divers to get below the surface and enjoy the deep blue sea. Thanks to a mild Mediterranean climate, water temperatures are moderate all year round and the area is protected from any major boating or shipping channels.

Those looking for more action-packed things to do can skydive onto a Mandurah beach or land in the magnificent Pinjarra countryside. Tackling the fast-water rapids and Murray Valley Bike Trails in Dwellingup, and hiring a jet ski in the Mandurah Estuary are also popular local activities to get the adrenaline pumping!

For those wanting to explore the great outdoors, there is an excellent selection of  walk trails ,  bike trails  and  wildflower trails  throughout Mandurah and the Peel region that meander alongside the rivers, by the estuary and along the ocean's shores.

15 Fun & Unique Things to Do in Mandurah

The coastal town of Mandurah, located about an hour south of Perth, is perhaps best known for its estuary twice the size of Sydney Harbour and an annual crab festival that draws visitors across the State.

But that’s not all the waterway city has to offer; from exploring the vibrant foreshore to spotting local wildlife and savouring the gourmet produce of the region, the city of Mandurah has so many fun and exciting things to do. So much so, that the city won the title of Australia’s Top Tourist Town in 2023!

In this guide, I share the best things to do in Mandurah and surrounds, perfect for your next day trip or weekend adventure to this coastal city.

Table of Contents

Explore the Mandurah Foreshore

Discover the heart of Mandurah with a wander along the Eastern Foreshore and Dolphin Quay . Starting from the Mandurah Visitor Centre, stroll along the grid of boardwalks that crisscross over the quay.

Pop into Lily Paris Café for brunch (or grab a tasty macaroon or pastry!), a cold sweet treat from the famous Simmo’s Ice Cream or dine at the popular fish and chip restaurant Cicerello’s (an institution in both Mandurah and the port town of Fremantle).

visit mandurah wa

Christmas lovers, don’t skip a visit to Tis the Season Christmas Emporium, open all year round in Dolphin Quay.

Meander along the long stretch of grass that hugs the shoreline as you make your way towards Mandurah’s Estuary Pool. There’s a great playground for kids, and come Christmas time, you’ll also find one of Mandurah’s impressive Christmas lights on display here (but more on this soon).

visit mandurah wa

Reaching the Kwillena Gabi Pool , take a dip in the calm waters or keep your eye peeled for local residents including black swans, pelicans and maybe even a dolphin. There’s a little alleyway nearby with colourful street art by local artists and a rainbow-checkered brick pathway.

You can find it next to the Little Stiller Distillery , Mandurah’s local distillery serving a unique range of gins at this boutique tavern.

Discover the Giants of Mandurah

In 2022, Mandurah became the new home for five of acclaimed international artist Thomas Dambo’s trolls, an Australian first.

To seek them out, grab a copy of the map with the location of the four unique Giants scattered across Mandurah. To find the fifth and final Giant, you’ll need to solve the puzzle based on clues left at each of the Giants to reveal its secret location.

It’s one of the best things to do in Mandurah for free!

visit mandurah wa

While each of the Giants are worth seeking out, my personal favourites are Santo Itko , the Halls Head Giant overlooking the ocean, and Jyttes Hytte , the tree-hugging secret location Giant.

I’ll let you in on a little hint: it’s in the vicinity of the Lake Clifton Thrombolites, so you can combine a visit.

Sip on Craft Beers

The Mandurah craft brewing scene has boomed in recent years, so you’re spoilt for choice.

A few of my favourites to check out are:

  • Thorny Devil Brewery: Mere footsteps from the Lake Clifton Thrombolites you’ll find Thorny Devil Brewery, serving up an interesting range of craft beers and American BBQ-inspired dishes in a relaxed outdoor setting.

visit mandurah wa

  • Boundary Island Brewing: I’ve visited Boundary Island Brewery twice now and both times I have been SO impressed by the food and drinks here. They serve an awesome range of craft beers, with classics like their award-winning pale ale but also an interesting tropical Pina Colada beer. Make sure to try the garlic bread pizza (and add the optional cheese, trust me!)
  • Wedgetail Brewing : this craft micro-brewery has a new taproom in the seaside suburb of Falcon, a 10-minute drive south of Mandurah. Feel like a local as you sip on their range of beers (best sampled via a tasting paddle) and munch on their famous pizzas.

Indulge in a Seafood Cruise

Indulge in fresh seafood and hop aboard Mandurah Cruise’s premium seafood lunch cruise.

Sample the crabs, lobsters and crayfish that Mandurah is famous for as you cruise along the Mandurah coastline, keeping an eye out for playful dolphins and maybe even a canalside Giant.

Complimentary wines from the Margaret River wine region are served alongside the delicious 7-course meal.

Paddle Along Mandurah’s Waterways in an Eco Kayak

Mandurah is well known for its diverse and numerous waterways, from ocean to estuaries and winding rivers. For an interesting and informative way to discover the latter, join a Salt and Bush Eco Kayak tour .

You’ll paddle along the Murray or Serpentine River in purpose-built eco kayaks, discovering and learning about the local wildlife and fauna that inhabit the region from your guide. The custom-built kayaks are propelled along by pedal power – so sit back, relax, and gently paddle your way upstream on this unique tour.

Sail Away on a Pirate Cruise

For a more relaxed cruising option, don your sea legs and become a pirate for an hour. The Pirate Ship Mandurah is the only one of its kind in Western Australia and is one of the best things to do in Mandurah for families.

Cruise through the canals, with the opportunity to steer the pirate wheel, ring the bell or sit back and enjoy the scenery. Costumes are optional but encouraged!

Tag Along on the Tourist Train

Another great option for those with young families. Jump aboard the bright green tourist fun train for a ride around the key sights of Mandurah.

The Big Toot traverses across the quay, with 10 hop-on hop-off stops, while the smaller Mini Toot chugs along the Eastern Foreshore.

Start Your Day at the Local Markets

Make a beeline to the community hub at Peel Produce Markets on Saturday morning, where you’ll join the locals browsing the vibrant artisan markets, fresh produce and food vans by the waters’ edge at the scenic Dawesville Foreshore Reserve.

visit mandurah wa

With stalls manned by friendly locals selling plants, health foods and handmade art & crafts, you’ll also find food vans serving yummy eats from Indonesian to dumplings to donuts. Check out the local goods on offer whilst sipping on coffee or a cold-pressed juice whilst listening to live music. There’s even spirit tastings from a local distillery, if you are so inclined!

The Peel Produce Markets are held weekly from 8 am – 12 pm .

visit mandurah wa

Pack a Picnic and Visit a Winery Estate

Did you know the Peel region is home to a winery? Peel Estate is located in Karnup, 20 minutes north of Mandurah city.

The estate has a sprawling lawn, with multiple shady spots under tall gum trees and even a few picnic tables and BBQs – perfect for a picnic lunch accompanied by a bottle of wine.

They also host regular markets and other events such as concerts. Ccheck out their website for the latest calendar of events.

visit mandurah wa

Go Dolphin Spotting

It wouldn’t be a visit to Mandurah without spotting at least one of the many local dolphins that inhabit the estuaries.

To try your luck at spotting them from the shore, head to this spot near the Dolphin Quay entrance, or this spot in Dawesville (10 minutes south of Mandurah).

To increase your chances of spotting them, join the daily 1-hour scenic Dolphin Cruise , which includes a dolphin sighting guarantee – cruise as many times as you like until you see them!

Marvel at the Christmas Lights

When it comes to Christmas Lights, the city of Mandurah certainly knows how to put on a show.

Come December, the waterways of Mandurah light up with a dazzling array of Christmas lights as the houses along the canals adorn their homes with dazzling displays.

You can join a cruise to see them in all their glory, but make sure to book your tickets in advance – they sell out weeks in advance!

Back on land, stroll along the Eastern Foreshore in December to admire the impressive Christmas Lights on display here.

visit mandurah wa

Explore Mandurah by eBike

There’s a lot of land and coastline to cover when exploring Mandurah, so why not do it in style by hiring an eBike or eScooter from the Bike Kiosk.

Conveniently located next to the Mandurah Visitors Centre, you can rent your wheels of choice for a few hours for a self-guided exploration or join one of the guided tours on offer.

We rented scooters and travelled along the coastline to visit Santi Ikto, the Halls Head Giant. It’s a fun and scenic way to see more of Mandurah.

visit mandurah wa

Cruise the Canals on an Eco BBQ Boat

I never imagined that I’d be cruising through Venetian Canals in a boat whilst my barbeque lunch sizzled on a grill in front of me.

Let me introduce you to the best invention I’ve seen in a long time: eco BBQ boats .

visit mandurah wa

Seating up to 6 or 10 people, depending on your chosen vessel, the donut-shaped eco-boats feature a quiet electric motor that you self-drive through Dolphin Quay and the Venetian Canals of Mandurah

We elected for the premium option with food and drinks provided, so all we had to do was show up, get a quick lesson on driving the boat (don’t worry, it’s super simple) and off we went!

visit mandurah wa

The highlight was tucking down on lamb chops, sausages and salad whilst a dolphin swan underneath us – an experience I won’t forget!

Admire the World’s Oldest Living Organisms at Lake Clifton

Lake Clifton is one of the five sites in Western Australia where thrombolites are found, and the closest to Perth.

These rounded rock-shaped living organisms are estimated to be over 2,000 years old. A long boardwalk has been built to view these delicate organisms and protect them from damage.

Pop into Thorny Devil Brewery after your visit for lunch or a tasting paddle.

visit mandurah wa

Bonus: Have a Beach Hopping Day

With over 50 km of coastline in Mandurah, there’s plenty of room for everyone to relax at the endless stretches of white sand beaches.

Head to the popular Town Beach or the protected man-made swimming area at Lido Beach, mere minutes from the hub of restaurants and cafes in Dolphin Quay.

Head to the neighbouring suburbs where you’ll feel like a local at Halls Head Beach or go for a morning stroll along the long stretch of sand at Falcon Beach.

visit mandurah wa

Where to Stay in Mandurah

Despite being a short one hour drive from Perth, if time permits, spend a night or two to explore all these incredible attractions in Mandurah.

Here are a couple of other places I’d recommend staying at in Mandurah.

  • Seashells Mandurah : Seashells is a great option for families, as besides from hotel rooms, they also have serviced apartments. It’s a great location overlooking Town Beach, and there’s even an infinity pool overlooking the waters edge!

visit mandurah wa

  • The Sebel Mandurah : if you want to be in the heart of the action, mere footsteps from the restaurants and bars in Dolphin Quay, this is the spot. With large rooms and balconies, the rooms have views of the Estuary or overlook the hotel pool.

Your ultimate guide to seeing the Giants of Mandurah and more

Monique Ceccato

Travel Journalist

06 June 2024

Time

Seaside getaways are a dime a dozen in Western Australia. But none have quite the same charm as Mandurah.

Mandurah is an outer-metro region rippled with canals, wetlands, and gaping bays. The lifestyle here is unhurried, with visitors and residents leaning heavily into boating, camping, and fishing. It feels nostalgic, reminiscent of those ice cream-filled family getaways of your childhood – and it’s become famous for the incredible Giants of Mandurah .

Danish recycle artist Thomas Dambo has installed five large-scale art pieces – known as the Giants of Mandurah – around the region (and one more in Subiaco) in an Australian-first outdoor exhibition. Heading out on the interactive trail to find them is a great excuse to get out and about in the city, exploring the natural landscapes and many meandering waterways.

How to get to Mandurah:

Mandurah is just 70km south of the Perth CBD , a 50-minute drive along the Kwinana Freeway or a 55-minute train from the Perth Underground Train Station. It’s ideally located en route to the Margaret River Region.

If you have one day:

Twenty-four hours mightn’t seem so long, but there’s plenty you can pack in on a one-dayer. Start with the hunt for Giants of Mandurah, ticking off two of the most easily accessible installations, Santi Ikto and Yaburgurt Winjan Cirkelstone.

The bushy-bearded Santi Ikto sits cross-legged at Halls Head, a 10-minute drive from the Mandurah Visitor Centre and your starting point on the Giant hunt. Follow the bitumen path from the car park and through the dunes to find him, enjoying the coastal wildflowers and ocean views as you wander.

Another 10 minutes in the car, and you’ll be at Coodanup Foreshore, where the friendly-faced Yaburgurt Winjan Cirkelstone lies, the newest of the five pieces. It’s just around the corner from the 29-hectare Creery Wetlands: a marshy habitat for some 22 species of migratory shorebirds and native quendas.

Cycling between the Giants is also an option, just hire an e-bike or electric scooter from The Bike Kiosk , also conveniently located at the Mandurah Visitor Centre. Book in on their three-hour Ride the Giants or 4.5-hour Big Kahuna tour, and you’ll get the lay of the land as you go.

If you’re hoping to see more in a day, hop aboard a coach tour to see all five giants without the need to navigate for yourself. There are several options, which you can find here .

Drop the bikes back, or farewell your bus tour, and make a beeline for dinner at Boundary Island Brewery . Keep it light with a chorizo and squid duo and some local chilli mussels to share. Or, dive straight into their extensive pizza menu and a pint of one of their Australian International Beer Award -winning brews.

If you have two days:

Ramp up the giant hunt and add another two to the list for your second day in Mandurah. Finding Little Lui will take you to swampland at Marlee Reserve, 10 minutes north of town. Head off in the early morning, parking in the small carpark off Marlee Road and following the signposted track 20 minutes into the heart of the reserve to the seated Giant. He’s propped up against a naturally fallen tree, the roots of which make up part of his unruly mane.

Rather than walking out to see Seba’s Song perched on the rocky Wannanup/Dawesville Channel Groyne, join a Soulmate Charters’ Scenic Cruise and see it from the water. It’s the only way to get a front-on view of the installation. The cruise leaves from the Port Bouvard Marina each hour, making its way up the Port Bouvard Channel, to the giant and back, in 45 minutes.

For a longer, more sumptuous day on the water, hop aboard Mandurah Cruises’ Wild Seafood Experience , which meanders through Mandurah’s inland waterways for 3.5 hours. As you cruise, Howard Park sparkling in hand, no less than seven blue manna crab and crayfish-laden courses will be served, the menu designed by ex-Cape Lodge chef Tony Howell.

If you’re still hungry after seven courses, stop in at Brewvino – home of Mandurah’s best steaks – for one last dinner. Dine on a grass-fed beef rib eye, or a loaded seafood linguine with unparalleled views of Mandjar Bay.

If you have three days:

Start the morning gently with an hour on Mandurah’s glassy waterways. A pitstop at the WA Gold Plate Award-winning Wood & Stone Cafe for a bacon, chilli, and mushroom scramble or their delectable pancakes is the perfect precursor to your Mandurah Cruises Dolphin Cruise embarkation at 10.00am. It’s a succinct tour, but dolphin sightings are almost immediate, the experienced guides heading straight out to the regular hotspots.

If you’d prefer to be your own skipper, hire a vessel or kayak from Mandurah Boat Hire to navigate the canals. Another option is having a unique houseboat holiday (with a minimum hire of three days and two nights) and call the Murray River home.

Those heading onwards to Margaret River after Mandurah can see the fifth and final Giant on the way down. Jyttes Hytte and his spear stand guard at a secret location in the Yalgorup National Park, the Swan Coastal Plain’s largest national park, just a half-hour drive south of Mandurah. But don’t just make a beeline for Jyttes, there’s plenty to be seen in and around this 12,888-hectare RAMSAR-recognised wetland system.

Some 10 lakes span the national park, a thriving natural habitat for migratory waterbirds, kangaroos, and wallabies. The most renowned lake, Lake Clifton, is home to a more unique species: the otherworldly thrombolites. Follow the boardwalk out atop the 2,000-year-old living rocks and marvel at their form before stopping in at the nearby Thorny Devil Brewery for a sampler of their Kakadu Plum sour or Choc-Maple imperial stout. It makes for a fitting finale to your time in Mandurah.

I would love to see these giants and was unaware they were in Australia until reading this superb article. I am fortunate to have seen one of these giants closer to home in Copenhagen and have to say they are very cool.
