Your Sedona experience does not need to end when the Sun sets and it gets dark. Sedona is a wonderful place to see the night sky. Just look up on any clear night, and you can see the Milky Way and a myriad of stars and constellations. With a telescope, you can see a lot more!

Sedona was certified as a Dark Sky Community in 2014, which means that development is done according to guidelines designed to keep the night sky free of light pollution. Sedona Night Sky Tours is in the nearby Village of Oak Creek (south of Sedona on this map ), a smaller place that is also a Dark Sky Community. The skies are even darker than in the City of Sedona.

Sedona is in a high-altitude desert climate zone, and the outdoor temperature can drop quickly after sunset. You will need a jacket or coat, except during the summer.

The tour's observing location has a comfortably-heated indoor space with restrooms, so you can enjoy the night sky while having a warm-up space to hang out in if you get cold.

A night sky tour would not be as much fun without a good telescope.

The telescope used in the tour is a computerized Dobsonian with a 12" primary mirror that shows objects 1900 times brighter and more detailed than with the unaided eye. It is motor-driven and computerized, and automatically points to tiny, faint objects that would be very difficult to find manually.

"Dobsonian" refers to the style of the telescope's mount. It was developed in the 1960s by John Dobson, who loved bringing astronomy "to the streets" by placing large telescopes on the sidewalk and showing amazing views to passersby.

The telescope's optics are Newtonian , a design invented in the 1600s by Isaac Newton, the famous mathematician and physicist. It uses mirrors instead of a lens to collect and focus light. Since the beginning of the 19th century, the world's largest telescopes have used derivatives of this design. I love the simplicity of classic Newtonian optics! It produces clear, bright images that in my opinion, more directly connect the viewer with the object, as compared to more modern and more complicated optical designs. It also produces 4-sided spikes of light emanating from stars, an artifact of the optics that many people consider very beautiful.

I am generally easygoing, relaxed, and friendly. I love sharing what I know about astronomy, and I like to get the details of everything just right. I like answering questions, and I get along well with children and young adults. I am good at explaining technical things. I really love it when I am interacting with anyone who wants to really understand what I am sharing. I can make complicated aspects of astronomy easy for you to understand.

The full story of my involvement with astronomy is too long to include on this page. If you want to read it, click here .

I will show you many objects during the tour. Here is a list of what may be included:

  • Constellations
  • Jupiter, including its brightest moons
  • Saturn, including its rings
  • Double and multiple stars
  • Carbon stars
  • Open clusters
  • Star-forming regions
  • Globular clusters
  • Planetary nebulae
  • Diffuse nebulae (interstellar clouds)
  • The Milky Way (our galaxy)

I try to show as many different kinds of objects as I can during each tour, however, I must pick from what is available at the time.

What you will see on a particular tour depends mainly on the time of year. For example, many distant galaxies are visible during springtime, and objects within the Milky Way are visible starting early in the summer.

If you are especially interested in a particular type of object or subject, let me know in advance so I can plan a tour oriented towards your interest.

  • The phase of the Moon is between three days past the Full Moon to three days after the New Moon.
  • The sky is clear at night.

The cost of the tour is $150 for each adult, plus $25 for each child under 18 years old.

The main part of the tour will start about one hour after sunset, and it will last about two hours.

I may ask you to arrive around sunset or a little later, while there is still daylight. It will help you to get oriented.

The tour will take place in the Village of Oak Creek, a 20 minute drive from the center of West Sedona. I will give you specific directions to the observing location after you schedule a tour.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Venture to the Thunder Mountain Trailhead to admire a stunning sunset, then wait for the sky to darken and you'll experience an unforgettable 360-degree starscape view. – Carol Kahn, Contributor, Travel

Sedona is known for its magnificent landscape views, stunning sunsets, amazing hiking trails and the arts. And, when the night brings darkness, Sedona's skies are illuminated with some of the world's most brilliant stars and constellations. Even the Milky Way adds drama with its luminous hue.

In fact, in 2014, Sedona was named an International Dark Sky Community by the International Dark-Sky Association. For those who love the twinkling lights, grab a blanket and head out to view nature's light show. You may get lucky and see a shooting star or two, or you might want to lie back and bask in the starlight glow.

If you are staying close to Uptown Sedona, a short, 5-minute jaunt to Brins Mesa should be on your agenda. Despite its proximity to Uptown, Brins Mesa is far enough away from the city lights to offer a great view of the night sky. You may even be able to make out the outline of the surrounding red rocks when there's a full moon.

You may also want to take a ride to the Baldwin Trailhead in the Village of Oak Creek. This spot is unmatched by any other in Sedona since it allows you to view the stars above the monolith of Cathedral Rock .

Perhaps you can catch a shooting star or meteor shower by taking a short journey down the Fay Canyon Trail, which is located less than 10 miles west of central Sedona. Walk past the tree-lined entrance where the skies open and you'll arrive at the perfect place to see nature's fireworks.

If you're interested in a guided stargazing experience, consider signing up for a tour with a company like Sedona Stargazing. You'll use the company's powerful binoculars and telescopes to view planets, galaxies and star clusters under the guidance of an astronomer. Past travelers praised the company for its knowledgeable guides and the high-quality telescopes.

Outside of Sedona

South of the Village of Oak Creek, you’ll find Beaverhead Flat Road.  There are several pullouts along this road that are dark and perfect to view the sky.  From West Sedona, head out of town on State Route 89A, there are several forest service roads and pullouts you can use there also.

What to bring with you

You’ll want to bring a blanket along with you and a good flashlight.  Depending on the time of year, dress for the occasion by bringing a jacket.  Binoculars are great to see things that your naked eye can’t. Bring along your telescope if you have one. Remember to download a star gazing app to your cell phone to help you identify constellations.

Take A Stargazing Tour

Local tour guides in Sedona offer stargazing tours that you might find interesting.  Experienced guides will teach you about astronomy at the best locations.  These tours may offer comfortable seating, snacks, use of telescopes and/or night vision goggles.  Make sure to check ahead if the weather is bad because tours can be cancelled at the last minute.

Stargazing and UFO Tours

Local Sedona tour guides even offer UFO Tours in addition to the stargazing tours. Experienced guides lead you to amazing locations and help you identify unidentified objects.  Tours include night vision goggles and lasers.  You’re sure to see something that cannot be explained.

Must-Have Equipment for Stargazing in Sedona

Night sky reflected in telescope lens.

When engaging in stargazing activities in Sedona, you must equip yourself with the necessary tools to enhance your celestial experience. Here are four essential items that you should consider having:

  • Telescope: A high-quality telescope is essential to observe distant celestial objects with intricate details. Opt for a telescope with a large aperture, as it will enable you to gather more light, resulting in a clearer view of stars, planets, and other astronomical wonders. If you plan to explore various stargazing spots in Sedona, portable telescope options are worth considering.
  • Binoculars: If you don’t have access to a telescope or prefer a more portable alternative, a pair of binoculars can still provide a fantastic stargazing experience. Look for binoculars with a wide field of view and high magnification power, as these features will allow you to bring the stars closer. Additionally, binoculars are excellent for observing constellations and star clusters.
  • Star Chart or Mobile App: To navigate the night sky effectively, having a star chart or a mobile app can be immensely helpful. These tools will assist you in identifying various constellations, planets, and other celestial objects. Some mobile apps offer real-time sky maps and informative guides, making your stargazing experience educational and enjoyable.
  • Red Flashlight: Preserving your night vision is crucial when stargazing. A red flashlight is vital. Unlike white light, red light doesn’t disrupt your eyes’ adaptation to darkness. To help you take the best night sky photos in Sedona, here are some valuable tips:

  • Experiment with Settings: Adjusting your camera settings is vital to capturing the night sky effectively. Start by using a wide aperture (low f-stop number) to allow more light into your camera. Additionally, setting a high ISO will increase the sensitivity of your camera sensor. Feel free to experiment with different shutter speeds to find the perfect balance for your desired effect.

Kim Carlsberg displays her book and her poster.

Kim Carlsberg, who operates Sedona UFO Night Vision Sky Tours, is a delight. She is a wonderful source of information about Sedona, its sky, and its high strangeness. We enjoyed a lovely and very fun evening with Kim as we looked up using her high quality night vision gear. She has a storefront now, and sells night vision gear as well as other items such as her books. A skywatch with night vision is an amazing experience and highly recommended.

At $90 per adult, night vision isn't cheap. Those Sedona UFOs had better be up there.
