Waymo One is now open to everyone in San Francisco

The Waymo Team

tourist post near me

The wait is over. Starting today, anyone can hail a ride with Waymo in San Francisco. Rain, shine, or Karl the Fog, just download the app , and ride.

We’ve been operating in San Francisco for years now, deliberately scaling our service over time. With tens of thousands of weekly trips, our Waymo One service provides safe, sustainable, and reliable transportation to locals and visitors to the city alike.

Now it’s available to anyone.

Waymo rides for all, 24/7, across the city

San Franciscans are using Waymo to connect to the city’s social fabric, making fully autonomous rides part of their daily lives.

About 30% of Waymo rides in San Francisco are to local businesses. We’ve provided thousands of rides to and from individual restaurants, live music venues, bars, coffee shops, ice cream parlors, parks, and museums, boosting the local economy. In a recent survey, over half of our riders said they used Waymo in the past couple of months to or from medical appointments, highlighting the value of personal space during these trips. Additionally, 36% of our SF riders used Waymo to connect to other forms of transit, like BART or Muni. Some of our San Francisco riders even use Waymo to depart in style from their weddings .

“I'm thankful to be living in a city that embraces technology when it can improve our lives with convenient and safe modes of transit,” says Michelle Cusano, Executive Director at The Richmond Neighborhood Center.

Waymo’s fleet is all-electric and sources 100% renewable energy from the City’s CleanPowerSF program . Since the beginning of our commercial operations in August 2023, Waymo’s rides have helped curb carbon emissions by an estimated 570,000 kg , contributing to California’s ride hail emissions goals. This also empowers our riders to travel more sustainably — Waymo’s recent rider survey revealed that 53% of our San Francisco users feel that Waymo has helped them be more environmentally friendly.

Plus, more than half of Waymo riders in SF say that riding with Waymo has improved their sense of personal safety when getting around, according to the survey.

“I enjoy riding in Waymo cars and appreciate the ease of transportation,” says Charles Renfroe, Development Manager at Openhouse SF. “Members of our community, especially transgender and gender non-conforming folks, don’t have to worry about being verbally assaulted or discriminated against when riding with Waymo.”

In addition to improving mobility for locals, Waymo offers a unique way for visitors to experience the city. Thousands of tourists have enjoyed the sightseeing from Waymo vehicles, exploring San Francisco’s iconic landmarks from the Presidio to the Ferry Building. By supporting Spanish and Chinese languages through our app and in-car features, we ensure a more inclusive experience for a diverse group of local riders and visitors to the City by the Bay alike.

In total, nearly 300,000 people, including those who live, work, and visit San Francisco, have signed up to ride with Waymo since we first opened a waitlist — more than a quarter of the city’s population. We’ve been welcoming new riders to the service incrementally, and we are now excited to open it up to everyone.

Scaling our operations safely and responsibly

Safety leads everything we do at Waymo, and this step in our journey builds on over 15 years of experience building safe and convenient autonomous driving, ever since we took our first rides on the streets of Palo Alto back in 2009. With more than 20 million rider-only miles and nearly 2 million paid rider-only public trips under our belt, we’re now bringing the safety benefits of the Waymo Driver to more people in San Francisco.

Road safety is urgent. Thirty nine people were killed on San Francisco’s roads in 2022 and twenty five more in 2023, with thousands reporting injuries every year. Traffic violence kills around 40,000 people in the U.S. annually. The status quo on road safety doesn't serve the people of San Francisco, and the Waymo Driver can help change that.

"Drunk driving remains the leading cause of fatalities and injuries on American roads, claiming over 13,000 lives in 2021 alone. As drivers increasingly drive while impaired, the need for technological intervention becomes evident,” — says Patricia Rillera, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) California State Executive Director. “MADD proudly collaborates with autonomous vehicle leaders like Waymo, recognizing their potential to prevent tragedies caused by impaired, distracted, and drowsy driving."

Our track record for safe operations is unparalleled. We’ve been safely transporting passengers for over six years, now providing more than 50,000 rides a week across three major urban areas. Over more than 30 scientific papers, it’s become clear that the Waymo Driver is already improving road safety in the cities where we operate. The Waymo Driver avoids high-severity collisions better than even the most attentive human drivers, and the data shows that we have fewer insurance claims and injuries or police reports than human drivers.

Waymo's SF safety numbers

Our operations improve safety for other road users, too. Over the 3.8+ million rider-only miles we’ve driven in San Francisco through the end of March, the Waymo Driver was involved in 17 fewer crashes with injuries and 12 fewer police-reportable crashes compared to human drivers*.

We’re committed to growing our service gradually and responsibly. We work closely with city and state officials, first responders, and advocates for road safety to ensure our service helps local communities gain access to reliable, safe, environmentally friendly transportation and has a positive impact on mobility.

A huge thanks to our many riders, community partners, and the residents of San Francisco for their support on this journey. Together, we’re providing locals and visitors to San Francisco with a safe, clean and fun mobility experience, keeping the city on the forefront of technological innovation.

And if you’d like to experience full autonomy for yourself, download the Waymo One app on the App Store and Google Play and take a ride today.

*The comparison is informed by Waymo’s methodology introduced in December, 2023.

The 9 best places to buy postcards.

Here's Where You Can Buy Postcards (Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash)

Wondering where to find and purchase postcards? You’re in luck: Since they’re easy to print and mail, postcards are available at at all kinds of different businesses, destinations, and cultural institutions if you know where to look!

Yet somehow, it often still feels tricky to find the perfect postcard when you need it.

Though postcards have remained incredibly popular and widely beloved for a century and a half—with as many as 2.8 billion postcards sent in a single year! —greeting cards are currently the more commercially available way to send a quick note, even though they use almost four times the paper and cost more to buy as well as mail.

But with the increasing desire to move away from constant use of our smartphones and reprioritize real connection in the void created by social media, postcards’ popularity is back on the rise—and you can find them everywhere from museum shops to art fairs to online postcard shops .

Here are nine of the very best places to buy postcards.

Souvenir Shops

The most dependable places to find postcards are the retailers surrounding travel landmarks and other tourist destinations. These souvenir gift shops invariably have a rotating rack of postcards, most commonly consisting of an array of viewcards with similar high-gloss photos on the fronts.

These tend to be printed cheaply on medium-grade cardstock and don’t always offer a lot to choose from, but they certainly get the job done and are a popular way to share the sights a traveler has seen with friends and family back home.

These shops are the primary exposure most people have to postcards, but if you’re looking for something higher-quality, more design-forward, or featuring a specific sentiment, other options abound.

Online Postcard Shops

Online postcard shops like this one are a perfect place to buy postcards anytime. They offer a curated selection of postcards that can be purchased individually, so you can mix and match your favorite designs from different sets to create a postcard set all your own.

While there are a range of postcard price points available through various online shops, it’s good to note that many retailers charge more in shipping than the postcards themselves are worth, so be sure to take this into account when deciding where to place an order. Since postcards themselves are so cheap to mail, this can be frustrating for the consumer, and part of the reason I created my postcard shop was to be able to list actual prices up front and offer free shipping for all of my orders.

Bookstores are a great place to buy postcards—particularly in the form of postcard books or boxed sets with 10, 20, 50, or 100 similar postcards.

These sets generally offer great paper quality, and they provide an economical option for anyone who sends a great deal of mail (such as avid Postcrossers ) or for those who don’t mind using up many similar designs prior to buying something else.

Antique Malls

If you’re looking for vintage postcards in particular, the best place to find them is at antique shows, shops, and malls.

It feels like nearly every booth in an antique store offers at least a few old postcards, and often you’ll see a whole box you can sort through—some of which may be written, but many of which are as ready to be sent as they were on the day they were printed.

These postcard selections tend to feature picture-postcard offerings from the “ Golden Age of Postcards ”: Deltiologists (postcard collectors) define this period as extending from the early 1900s to the beginning of the First World War, during which time billions of postcards were printed, sold, and mailed throughout the US and around the world.

Museum Stores

Museums are rife with beautiful art and artifacts, and since these are impossible for visitors to take home with them when they leave, you’ll often find representations of paintings, statues, and more in the form of postcards in museum gift shops.

Many upscale museums will also offer a beautifully designed postcard set or two—for instance, you can find the entire set of Paris vs. New York postcards by Vahram Muratyan in the MOMA Design Store in New York City.

Paper Stores & Gift Shops

Whether it’s a boutique stationer, a local letterpress, or an all-purpose gift store, retailers that focus on giftables and the art of giving them almost always have at least a few postcards for sale among their selection of greeting cards, wrapping papers, and other accoutrements.

It’s worth noting that specialty paper shops tend to offer far better quality, and thus higher prices, compared to souvenir shops, bookstores, and so on. They generally do not sell postcards in larger sets, but they’re a great place to find a specialty postcard for a specific occasion, such as for a friend’s birthday.

Whether they’re selling through a local gallery, at an art market, or on Etsy, artists often offer small prints of their work in the form of postcards!

These are often priced as small prints to be displayed, rather than as paperie to be mailed—thus, they may cost several dollars more than you’d normally spend on a single card. Still, they’re an amazing way to collect or gift work from artists you admire without breaking the bank on larger pieces!

Gas Stations

A surprising number of gas stations offer a selection of postcards in a postcard rack! Since these locations are nearly always places you probably wouldn’t write home about, their cards tend to be locally printed and are often irreverent.

They often tend toward lower print and paper quality, but some of the most entertaining postcard designs I’ve ever found have been at gas stations!

Hotels, Bars, & Restaurants

Service establishments are less dependable postcard sources than most others on this list, but many lodgings, eateries, and drinkeries do offer custom postcards printed by their business that you can take, write, and maybe even send for free! Some of my personal favorite postcards have been picked up at places like Pépé Le Moko in Portland, The Everleigh in Melbourne, and Kafana in New York.

They may be stacked at the front desk, arrive as a souvenir with your check, or be kept behind the bar, so keep an eye out for these paper souvenirs! They’re great marketing materials for the business, which is why so many places offer them for free—and some places (especially hotels) will even stamp and mail the postcards for you, so be sure to ask!

A tourist traveling in Greece has revealed how a sneaky thief stole her identity and drained her bank account of more than $15,000 after she made one stupid mistake.

“If you’re planning to go on a girls’ or lads’ holiday this summer, do not make the same mistake as me!” Lydia Coates implored in a TikTok clip posted on Jun. 27. “One simple mistake in Zante cost me over £12,242 [US $15,626].”

In the four-minute video, which was recently deleted, the British woman explained the moment she realized her phone and license were missing.

Lydia Coates

Coates traveled to the Greek island in 2022 with her close friend, where they embarked on a booze cruise.

Prior to boarding the party boat, Coates packed a small bag with her phone, ID, bank cards and cash. She claims the bag stayed with her throughout the excursion.

“The only time I didn’t have my bag on me was when I was in the sea, but my friend was still on the boat so she had it,” she stated.

However, when she got back on board the vessel, her phone was missing from her bag.

Coates became frantic because her driver’s license was attached to her device, so she immediately asked the cruise DJ to alert the 50 boat attendees as to whether they’d seen it.

Unfortunately, nobody turned the phone over so tour organizers agreed to check everyone’s personal belongings.

“I was sort of at peace because if someone stole it, they’re gonna find it,” Coates recalled.

But that reassurance was short-lived because organizers couldn’t find anything.

Lydia Coates

After getting back to land, Coates used a friend’s device to check her online banking accounts, which appeared untouched.

She froze her bank accounts and remained optimistic.

“Lo and behold when I got home, I checked my mobile banking and a singular bank transfer of £12,242 [US $15,626] had been sent to someone called Jessica,” she said.

“My biggest mistake that holiday was putting my driving license in the back on my phone,’ she explained. “My birthday, on my driving license in the back of my phone, was my password and was also, the password to my online banking.”

Coates was devastated that her year’s worth of savings had vanished, so she contacted the Zante Greece police department and tour organizers, who she claims “were absolutely no help.”

The TikToker took things into her own hands and located her phone through “Find my iPhone.”

She discovered it had ended up in Birmingham, England, but when she shared this information with authorities, they didn’t offer the assistance she expected.

Eventually she had to open an identity fraud protection scheme because the thief had access to everything in her phone, from her photos to her online banking details. They also still had her driver’s license.

“So now, for the rest of my life, I am paying for protection against identity fraud because this person could take out as many loans, mortgages with my information,” Coates confessed.

Lydia Coates

She is now urging others to earn from her and avoid storing personal items, such as a driver’s license, in their phone case.

“The moral of the story is, do not put your ID in the back of your phone case if you’re going on holiday or ever,” she added.

It’s also long been advised to use pin numbers and passwords that aren’t related to your birth details.

Meanwhile, in a follow-up video, Coates revealed she was reimbursed after endless meetings with the bank and police officers, per Daily Mail.

“In my case, they got away with it, they got the money because I got the money back from the fraud protection and not from the person themselves,” Coates said.

  • OT OpenTable Diner Amsterdam • 1 review 4.0 Dined on Jun 22, 2024 Dined here with two friends on a Saturday evening. Booked a table via OpenTable and availability was good. Averaging the categories of open table reviews, food, service, ambience; this restaurant gets four stars out of five from me. Food: Once food arrived, it was pretty nice with the steak cooked as asked. Fries are unlimited and “sharing for the table” although you are not told that at the time so it feels like a bit of a surprise. Really, they should just be per person since we ate each basket, more or less straight away. The Brussels sprouts, cheese and pomegranate is a lovely side dish. Service: We had to wait a little bit when we arrived for our table in fairness we were there five or six minutes early. Service was unfortunately very slow and the waiting staff were on the edge of being overwhelmed by how many orders were going out. Toilets were unfortunately not clean, and the hand towel bin was overflowing. And lastly, waiting staff eating in view of customers is in my view and absolute no no. Unfortunately for all these things I have to give two stars for service. Ambience: The decor is quite atmospheric and once the construction site outside the restaurant has gone, it will be a really good location with a view of the canal. Good to see locals dining here as well as visitors to the city so we didn’t feel like a tourist trap at all. In total, four stars for the atmosphere. With more waiting staff, more attention to diners, fresh bread rather than baked toast and and bringing the bill to the table rather than the customer having to beg to pay, would turn this good enough restaurant into an excellent one. Wildfire forces Alaska's Denali National Park to temporarily close entrance

A wildfire burning near the entrance of Denali National Park and Preserve has forced the temporary closure of one of Alaska’s most popular tourist destinations

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A wildfire burning near the entrance of Denali National Park and Preserve forced the temporary closure Monday of one of Alaska’s most popular tourist destinations.

Cars were turned around at the park’s only entrance, tour buses were canceled and public facilities, including the visitor’s center, were closed at the park, which is about a five-hour drive north of Anchorage.

Trails were also closed Sunday, as were campgrounds for both existing and new reservations, the park service said in a statement. About 150 National Park Service employees housed in a facility near the fire were evacuated, park spokesperson Paul Ollig said in an email. An evacuation center was set up in the nearby town of Healy.

About 50 firefighters and aircraft dropping retardant and water contained the fire north of the park’s entrance, the Bureau of Land Management’s Alaska Fire Service said in a late Sunday update.

The fire burning in black spruce was reported Sunday about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) north of the entrance to the national park, home to Denali, the tallest mountain on the North American continent. The wildfire was estimated to be about half of a square mile (1.3 kilometers) in size.

The fire is burning on the west side of the Nenana River, which separates the fire from the national park.

Officials said there were no immediate threats to structures. The Denali Borough said on its website that the fire is burning northwest, farther into the park, and away from a tourist area on the highway, commonly referred to as Glitter Gulch, that includes hotels, gift shops and restaurants.

The weather could provide some help for firefighters, with cooler temperatures and a chance of isolated thunderstorms expected later Monday. A strong low-pressure system is expected to bring westerly winds on Tuesday, following by cooler and wetter weather, the fire service said.

As of Monday, 309 wildfires so far this year have burned nearly 672 square miles (1,740 square kilometers) in Alaska, the nation’s largest state. Seventeen of those fires started in the last day.
