1 dead, more than 50 injured after bus rolls over near Grand Canyon

One person is dead and more than 50 are injured after a bus rolled over at Grand Canyon West on Tuesday morning, officials said .

The bus rolled over around 9:50 a.m. local time (12:50 p.m. ET) in the area of Grand Canyon West , a census-designated place in northwestern Arizona located on the Hualapai Reservation and home to the Skywalk observation deck , according to Hualapai Emergency Operations .

Grand Canyon West is not part of Grand Canyon National Park, which is operated by the National Park Service and located more than 230 miles away, according to its website .

A total of 57 people were involved in the incident, with eight people who sustained injuries flown to nearby hospitals by five medical flight agencies, and those who sustained "noncritical injuries" taken to hospitals by car, according to Hualapai Emergency Operations.

The person who died has not yet been publicly identified, according to Hualapai Emergency Operations, which added that the Hualapai Nation Police Department and the Arizona Department of Public Safety are investigating the fatality.

The conditions of those who sustained injuries were not immediately available.

NBC affiliate KSNV of Las Vegas reported that the rollover was caused by a collision between a private tour operator and visitor’s personal car near a parking lot, citing a spokesperson for Grand Canyon West.

Representatives for Grand Canyon West, the Hualapai Indian Tribe and the Arizona Department of Public Safety could not immediately be reached Wednesday morning.

In the news release, Hualapai Emergency Operations said the investigation was ongoing and no further information would be immediately available.

The rollover comes after a similar incident, in Jan. 2021, when one person died and more than 40 others were injured — two critically — when a tour bus rolled and landed on its side on Diamond Bar Road, en route to Grand Canyon West.

The name of that tour bus company was not released at the time, and it was not immediately clear whether the same company had been involved in both incidents.

GRAND CANYON WEST, Ariz. (AP) — Grand Canyon West and its Skywalk attraction and helicopter tours was back in business Wednesday, a day after one person was killed and at least eight others hospitalized after a tour bus rollover in northern Arizona.

Hualapai tribal officials said a private tour operator and a visitor’s personal vehicle collided near the Grand Canyon West parking lot at around 10 a.m. Tuesday within the resort’s Corp Circle in Terminal 1.

They haven’t released any other information, citing their ongoing investigation.

Cheyanne Majenty, who is with Hualapai Emergency Operations, said the resort was open and fully operational Wednesday after being closed following Tuesday’s fatal rollover.

John MacDonald, a spokesman for the tribe, said the person who died was a woman but he didn’t have her name, age or hometown yet.

Eight of the 57 people aboard the bus were flown to a Las Vegas hospital and reported to be in fair condition Tuesday night. However, MacDonald didn’t have any names or updates Wednesday.

The Hualapai Nation Police Department is investigating the rollover, but the National Transportation Safety Board said it is not doing so “at this time.”

Grand Canyon Tour Bus Rolls Over, Leaving 1 Dead And 2 Critically Injured

AP logo

PHOENIX (AP) — A Las Vegas-based tour bus heading to the Grand Canyon rolled over in northwestern Arizona on Friday, killing one person and critically injuring two others, authorities said.

A spokeswoman for the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said the cause of the Friday afternoon wreck was not yet known, but a fire official who responded said speed appeared to be a factor. No other vehicles were involved.

“It was a heavily damaged bus. He slid down the road quite a ways, so there was a lot of wreckage,” said Lake Mohave Ranchos Fire District Chief Tim Bonney. “Just to put it in perspective, on a scale of zero to 10, an eight.”

This photo provided by the Mohave County Sheriff's Office shows a Las Vegas-based tour that rolled over in northwestern Arizona on Friday, Jan. 22, 2021. One person died, and two were critically injured. The cause of the rollover is under investigation.

None of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle but they were all in shock, Bonney said.

“A lot of them were saying the bus driver was driving at a high rate of speed,” he said.

A photo from the sheriff’s office showed the bus on its side on a road that curves through Joshua trees with no snow or rain in the remote area.

There were 48 people on the bus, including the driver, authorities said. After the crash, 44 people were sent to Kingman Regional Medical Center, including two flown by medical helicopter, spokeswoman Teri Williams said. All the others were treated for minor injuries, she said.

Two people were critically injured, said Mohave County sheriff’s spokeswoman Anita Mortensen.

The bus was heading to Grand Canyon West, about 2 1/2 hours from Las Vegas and outside the boundaries of Grand Canyon National Park. The tourist destination sits on the Hualapai reservation and is best known for the Skywalk, a glass bridge that juts out 70 feet (21 meters) from the canyon walls and gives visitors a view of the Colorado River 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) below.

Before the pandemic, about 1 million people a year visited Grand Canyon West, mostly through tours booked out of Las Vegas. The Hualapai reservation includes 108 miles (174 kilometers) of the Grand Canyon’s western rim.

In addition to the Skywalk, the tribe has helicopter tours on its land, horseback rides, a historic guano mine and a one-day whitewater rafting trip on the Colorado River. Rafters who are on trips through the Grand Canyon also can get on and off the river on the reservation.

In a statement issued late Friday, the Hualapai Tribe and its businesses said they were saddened by the rollover and that safety is the highest priority for guests, employees and vendors.

“As a people, our hearts go out to those so deeply affected,” the statement read. “We wish speedy recoveries to those requiring medical attention.”

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Keith Holloway said he didn’t immediately have more details about the crash. The agency doesn’t send investigators to all bus crashes.

Other, deadly crashes have happened before in the area.

Four Chinese nationals died in 2016 when their van collided with a Dallas Cowboys staff bus headed to a preseason promotional stop in Las Vegas.

In 2009, a tour bus carrying Chinese nationals overturned on U.S. 93 near the Hoover Dam, killing several people and injuring others. The group was returning from a Grand Canyon trip.

Federal investigators cited driver inattention as the probable cause of that crash. The bus driver was attempting to fix a problem with airflow through his door before the crash and became distracted, then veered off the road and overcorrected before crossing a median and overturning. Most of the passengers were ejected.

Fonseca reported from Flagstaff. Associated Press reporters Ken Ritter and Michelle L. Price in Las Vegas, Terry Tang in Phoenix and AP/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative corps member Sam Metz in Carson City, Nevada, contributed.

GRAND CANYON WEST, Ariz. — One person was killed in a tour bus rollover involving over 50 people Tuesday in northern Arizona near the Grand Canyon West Skywalk, authorities said.

The bus rolled over just before 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grand Canyon West on the Hualapai Indian Reservation, according to the tribal police department.

Grand Canyon West is run by the tribe but has no operational ties to Grand Canyon National Park, which is managed by the National Park Service.

The rollover involved 57 people; one person died and eight others were flown to hospitals. An undisclosed number of others with less critical injuries were driven for treatment, tribal emergency officials said in a statement.

The name of the person who died and details on the injured were not immediately released.

A private tour operator and a visitor's personal vehicle collided near the Grand Canyon West parking lot, tribal officials confirmed. They declined further comment, citing their ongoing investigation.

Commonly Asked Questions

This is going to be a long day trip! So, how much does it cost, what’s the quickest way to get there, and when’s the best time to visit? Here are answers to common questions.

How far is the drive from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon?

Your journey to the Grand Canyon depends on which rim you plan to visit. The west rim may be reached in 2 hours, but if you want to go to the South and North Rims, it will require an 8-10 hour round trip!

  • Las Vegas to West Rim Distance:  125 miles, ~2 hours one way
  • Las Vegas to South Rim Distance:  275 miles, ~4-4.5 hours one way
  • Las Vegas to North Rim Distance:  280 miles, ~5 hours one way

What part of Grand Canyon is best to tour?

The most popular area from Vegas is the West Rim , which lies just 120 miles from the city. Tourists choose here for some of the best canyon views and to conquer a fear of heights on the Skywalk, a glass overhang built 4000 feet above the canyon floors.

There’s no denying that both the south and north rim are pretty far for a day trip , but the south rim is the most beloved part overall. Here you can find hundreds of miles of trails as well as scenic drives with vistas like Mather Point, Bright Angel Trail, and Desert View Drive.

The North Rim is best if you are looking for seclusion and a rugged adventure. It is about the same distance as the South Rim but much less accessible. More remote and wild, the North Rim contains fewer epic viewpoints, and many roads are closed from October to May due to weather conditions.

These reasons make the North Rim a less desirable destination for travelers looking for a day trip. This may be best for a road trip instead of a bus tour.

A day trip from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon is long, but worth it if you have limited time or don’t have access to a rental car (since in America, you must be 26). If you can spare more time, I recommend staying in the area overnight or seeing more than one section of the park.

Day trip bus tours to Grand Canyon start as cheap as $99 for just the tour itself with no additional add-ons and can go up as high as $250 if you add optional activities or want a smaller group.

A bus is likely the cheapest way to get from the Grand Canyon. You can also find a good deal on a rental car if you book in advance.

A typical bus tour from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon will be a full-day affair, ranging from 10 – 15 hours. The west rim is 2 hours closer than the South Rim, so the tour can be much shorter if you opt for the former option.

This route has no direct public transportation, so you will have to book a tour to go between Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon by bus. As listed above, there are many options for bus tours ranging in price and activity. You may be able to take multiple connections to get there yourself.

That depends largely on your budget and schedule. Driving will save you money if you have a bigger group and give you more flexibility. However, a tour may be better for you if you want a knowledgeable guide or effortless transport.

If you’re planning a trip to the Grand Canyon, April through June are fantastic months: temperatures are moderate and it’s just before peak season. Summertime is hot and crowded, while winter can be icy with slippery trails – not to mention that the north rim of the canyon is usually closed during this time.

Yes! Booking your trip at least a week in advance will help ensure that tickets are available for your desired date/time slot. While some offer last-minute bookings, they fill up quickly, so it’s best to avoid risking it.

Yes! It’s totally possible — and cheaper!–to visit the grand canyon without taking a tour by renting an RV or going by car. However, you’ll need an authorized guide and permit if you want to access closed-off areas like Havasu Falls.

Since there are many things that you can see during your visit, allowing yourself extra time here can make sure that you don’t miss anything important! You’ll want at least 4 hours of exploring time if you’re short on time, but I recommend dedicating at least 1 full day, so that you have enough time for activities such as hiking and river rafting!

Helicopter rides vary depending on the length of flight & type. Expect to spend anywhere between $120-$500 per seat; however, the most popular options begin at around the $200 mark for a flight ranging anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour in length.

Final Thoughts: Best grand canyon tours from las vegas by Land

A visit to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas is an unforgettable experience, from a single day to a multi-day trip spanning Southwestern USA.

In case you’ve just scrolled to the end:

  • To choose the best value West Rim Tour with hotel pickup included,  join this tour from Las Vegas.
