Originally a fishing village that later developed into a large Victorian beach resort, the East Sussex town of Eastbourne is one of the most popular places to visit in South East England for those seeking a seaside getaway. Its elegant three-mile-long seafront promenade extends along wide pebble beaches , and a marvelous holiday atmosphere permeates the spectacular mid-19th-century Grande Parade.

This is the perfect place for a stroll past magnificent white- and pastel-hued houses and luxury hotels, including The Grand Hotel Eastbourne , a famous hotel that overlooks the brightly colored deckchairs on the beach. At the end of the wide esplanade, Eastbourne Pier projects far out to sea behind the Winter Garden theater.

The traffic-free areas around the High Street offer a colorful array of shops, art galleries, and other attractions, as well as plenty of entertainment at locations like the historic Royal Hippodrome Theatre .

Eastbourne also boasts several fine parks and leisure facilities, and sports enthusiasts are well catered to with numerous golf courses and tennis courts (the Eastbourne International ladies' tennis tournament is held here each June). Within walking distance of downtown Eastbourne, the 530-foot-high Beachy Head is a favorite sightseeing spot for tourists due to its spectacular views. This striking snow-white cliff at the end of the South Downs amply justifies its fame, taking its name from the French Normans who called it "Beauchef," or beautiful headland.

While not accessible to the public, the 141-foot-tall, red-and-white striped Beachy Head Lighthouse at the foot of the cliff is a pleasing contrast. So, too, is the Belle Tout Lighthouse on the clifftop to the west of Beachy Head. Built in 1832, the Belle Tout Lighthouse now offers B&B accommodations with stunning views over the English Channel.

After soaking up the views, take the three-mile-long cliff path passing through Cuckmere Haven and Seaford , or try one of the Guided Walks hosted by the Downland Rangers. Be sure to visit the Beachy Head Countryside Centre, with its interesting Downland Experience exhibit featuring the archaeology, flora, and fauna of the area.

The famous Carpet Gardens are the centerpiece of Eastbourne's Promenade and should definitely be explored. With vibrant displays of bedding plants and fountains, these award-winning gardens are a welcome splash of color between the Western Lawns and Eastbourne Pier. Shrubs and plant species from around the world, including from Mexico, New Zealand, and the Mediterranean, thrive in the town's mild climate.

Another gardener's delight, tucked away below Helen Gardens at Holywell, is the lovely old Italian Gardens . Located in a wooded amphitheater carved out of the cliffs, the gardens were constructed in 1904 and provide the perfect setting for open-air theater productions.

Built in 1870, Eastbourne Pier is a wonderful example of Victorian seaside architecture. A highlight of a visit is enjoying the superb views of the town and the English Channel, as well as participating in the many fun things to do here.

The structure's boardwalk leads to a number of tourist attractions, including dining opportunities, including the Victorian Tea Rooms, an amusement arcade, and novelty and souvenir shops.

Also popular with tourists is the original Camera Obscura , a Victorian projector with a 360-degree view of the seafront. Although severely damaged by a fire in 2014, much of the pier and its attractions remain open, including its restaurants, and yes, there's a chip shop!

Located just a little farther along Grand Parade on the edge of the picturesque Wishtower Slopes park stands the Eastbourne Lifeboat Museum . Housed in a 19th-century boathouse and established in 1822, this fascinating museum features interesting displays and exhibits related to the town's lifeboats and maritime history.

Highlights include a display relating to the British navy's rescue of allied troops from Dunkirk in WW2, as well as a collection of medals and stories related to dramatic rescues at sea. A great gift shop is located in the same building, and admission is free.

A ride aboard Eastbourne's Big Wheel, the UK's largest transportable Ferris Wheel , is one of the top things to do on the town's seafront. Also known as the Eastbourne Eye, this 160-foot-tall observation wheel boasts great views not only over the town, but also along the beachfront as far as Beachy Head.

Set on a hilltop in the Western Lawns park area and just a short walk from Eastbourne Lifeboat Museum, this family-friendly attraction took only eight days to build and features comfortable enclosed gondolas, some with wheelchair accessibility.

The 200-year-old Eastbourne Redoubt was part of a chain of fortifications known as Martello Towers designed to deter Napoleon's forces in the early 1800s. Garrisoned by troops until the early 1900s and again during WWII, the fortress houses three excellent military collections, including artifacts and displays related to the Royal Sussex, the county's regiment for more than 250 years.

Visitors can view artifacts from the 1702 Spanish War of Succession right up to the North Africa campaign of 1942. The Queen's Royal Irish Hussars collection celebrates the history of two famous cavalry regiments: the 4th Queen's Own Hussars and the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars, famous for their part in the ill-fated Charge of the Light Brigade. On-site amenities include a cinema and a café. Guided tours are available.

Model train enthusiasts and kids of all ages won't want to miss the Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway. Just nine miles from Eastbourne, the seaside town of Seaford is famous for its Martello Tower at the eastern end of the promenade. However, what it's most famous for are the superb views of the Seven Sisters Country Park . A number of walking trails can be enjoyed, including one that provides easy access to the beach at the foot of the cliffs.

Among England's most impressive cliff views, the incredible Seven Sisters - Haven Brow, Short Brow, Rough Brow, Brass Point, Flagstaff Point, Bailey's Brow, and Went Hill Brow - are just begging to be explored. The best view of these seven chalk hills, which form part of the foothills of the South Downs, can be enjoyed from Seaford Head.

Founded in 1923 and located in its current modern facility since 2009, the Towner Gallery boasts an impressive collection of more than 4,000 oil paintings, watercolors, sculptures, and sketches. The gallery features numerous examples relating to Sussex artists with a special connection to the country, including traditional and modern art works.

Numerous "big name" artists also appear in this surprisingly eclectic collection. These include the likes of Henry Moore; Pablo Picasso; and Eric Ravilious, a student then later teacher at the Eastbourne School of Art. Tours and educational programs are available.

Set on a moated island near Hailsham, eight miles north of Eastbourne, Michelham Priory is considered one of the most impressive historic houses in Sussex. Built in 1229, most of the original buildings were destroyed during the Dissolution and the remains converted into a Tudor farm and country house.

Interior highlights include the mansion's Victorian and Tudor kitchens, along with a room modeled to look as it would have done in WWII, when evacuees from London were housed here.

Other big draws today include picturesque grounds and gardens, a working watermill, a sculpture garden, a smithy, and a rope museum. Be sure to look for the Elizabethan Great Barn, which serves as a backdrop for art exhibits and theater productions. A café and shop are located on the property.

For those seeking a different kind of thrill when in Hailsham, nearby Arlington Stadium features a quarter-mile-long raceway for hot rod and stock car racing.

This nationally acclaimed 14-mile trail follows the route of the former "Cuckoo Line" railroad linking the towns of Polegate, Hailsham, Horam, and Heathfield. The level and surfaced trail offers ideal opportunities for walking for those of all abilities.

It's popular for horseback riding and cycling and is part of the National Cycle Network. Mostly traffic-free, the route offers superb opportunities to explore the region's beautiful countryside. Part of the trail even passes through a former train tunnel, the Heathfield Tunnel.

The Observatory Science Centre in Herstmonceux features an incredible historic astronomy site that was once part of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Highlights of a visit include fun exhibits, with an emphasis on discovery and sharing the miracles of science, as well as many unique displays relating to the history of the building itself. Tours and occasional open evenings are available after hours that allow guests a chance to view the night sky.

No visit would be complete without spending time exploring neighboring Herstmonceux Castle , one of the oldest brick buildings in England. Surrounded by a large moat, this impressive 15th-century mansion offers tours of its interior, as well as the chance to explore its extensive gardens and grounds, including some 300 acres of woodland.

A scenic 15-minute drive away from Eastbourne's seafront, and you'll find yourself in the small community of East Dean. One of the prettiest villages in England , charming East Dean (East dean and Friston in full) makes for a great stopover for those hiking through or driving to Beachy Head and the famous Seven Sisters white chalk cliffs.

With ample free parking, the village is virtually traffic free, with its quaint village green forming a hub for those picnicking or simply sitting and soaking up the traditional English village experience. The village church, St. Simon and St. Jude , is also worth visiting.

Just an hour by train from London, the town of Eastbourne on England's southeast coast makes for a compelling city escape. Located along the English Channel, this Victorian resort town is a great home base if you want to spend time by the sea and catch a glimpse of the Seven Sisters cliffs . Eastbourne's seafront is comprised of old Victorian hotels, many of which are now in disrepair, but the town is beginning to revitalize itself with new spots, like the design-driven Port Hotel . There's a lot to do (and eat) around Eastbourne, especially if you enjoy being outdoors. While the beach is rocky, rather than sandy, it remains a popular destination during the summer, especially for families and couples. Here are the best things to do if you're planning a visit.

Visit Eastbourne Pier

The impressive Eastbourne Pier opened in 1872 and has since become the seaside town's most iconic landmark. The pier was renovated in 2014 following a fire and features a pub, several stores, a nightclub and fish and chips shop. Its Victorian Tea Rooms are particularly impressive and make for a nice spot for afternoon tea. Be sure to stroll all the way out to the end of the pier, where fisherman typically set up their rods, and visit at sunrise or sunset for beautiful views of Eastbourne.

Stroll on Beachy Head

Beachy Head is the highest chalk cliff in Britain and can be accessed by foot, bus or car. It's a few hours walk (with some steep inclines) from Eastbourne, or you can opt to park at the top and stroll over to the cliffside. The cliff overlooks the English Channel and offer views of the famous red and white-stripped lighthouse. Beachy Head is accessible by wheelchair, making it a great pick for those with limited mobility. After seeing the sights, head to Beachy Head Pub for lunch. The dining room and outdoor terrace has amazing views and the hearty dishes are perfect for those who decided to cliff to Beachy Head from town.

Dine at the Beach Deck

There's nothing like fresh seafood right on the beach, which is what you'll find at The Beach Deck , a casual spot on the eastern end of Eastbourne. Opt for one of the outdoor tables, which have views of the sea, and be sure to try the mussels or the fish and chips. On busy days there can be a line (The Beach Deck doesn't take reservations), but it's worth the wait. The restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and keeps things going until 10 p.m. every day except Sunday.

Because the seafront at Eastbourne is relatively calm, the waters invite lots of kayakers and paddle boarders. There are several spots to rent a kayak, including Buzz Active , which offers single and double kayaks, as well as windsurfs and stand-up paddle boards. Eastbourne's beaches can get very crowded on weekend days, so aim to arrive early and take advantage of quieter waters before everyone else shows up. Heading towards the western end of Eastbourne's beach can also help you avoid crowds. Be sure to check the weather and take all safety measures when using a kayak.

Hit the Beach

England's south coast isn't exactly known for its sandy beaches. Instead, Eastbourne (and its neighbors) have shingle beaches, which means they are very rocky. Still, Eastbourne is popular for sunbathers and swimmers during the warmer months of the year, and most people come prepared with blankets, chairs and even small tents to make the most of the rocky terrain. Eastbourne Beach is extremely long, at nearly three miles, with lots of concessions and toilets available along the boardwalk. Where you set up your towel to lay out depends on what sort of experience you're looking for, although anywhere on the beach brings some fun. Families should head to the Main Resort beach area, where lifeguards are standing duty.

Visit the Eastbourne Redoubt

The Eastbourne Redoubt has stood watch over the southern coast of England for over 200 years. It was originally built to keep Napoleon's armies out of Britain and now exists as a historic site and museum. The Reboubt is also home to the Redoubt Cinema, a brand new movie theater . Don't miss the cafe, which has a nice outdoor seating area. Family tickets are available for groups planning a visit to the site.

See a Show at Eastbourne Bandstand

Built in 1935, the Eastbourne Bandstand has a long history of showcasing live music for the seaside town. Currently, the bandstand seats 1,400 guests and offers 140-150 live musical events each year. The performances vary by style and genre, but expect everything from tribute shows to big band nights to special Christmas shows. Check the calendar ahead of your visit to see what's on. Tickets tend to be very affordable, which makes it a great budget option in Eastbourne. The bandstand also regularly hosts shows for kids.

Walk the South Downs Way

The South Downs Way National Trail stretches for over 100 miles across the south coast of England. It makes its way from Eastbourne through the South Downs to Winchester, but you can walk as much or as little of the trail as you prefer. There are two routes out of Eastbourne, one along the coast and the other through the Downs. Your best bet is to follow the coast, which takes hikers past Beachy Head and Birling Gap before venturing into the countryside. Check the National Trail website for a detailed map.

Grab a Treat at Fusciardi Ice Cream Parlour

It's not a beach day without a delicious ice cream cone, and Fusciardi Ice Cream Parlour is the best of the best in Eastbourne. You'll know it for the long line that snakes out from the shop door, but it's worth the wait. Established in 1967, Fusciardi's makes 18 flavors of ice cream, with specialty flavors available on certain days. They're also known for their indulgent ice cream sundae. It's open daily from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., and there is outdoor seating available. It's also a good place to stop for a morning coffee on your way to the beach.

Journey to Seven Sisters and Birling Gap

Ah, the white cliffs. While many travelers think of Dover when they see England's chalk cliffs, the Seven Sisters boast some of the best views. The cliffs extend from Beachy Head to Seaford and there are various points for visitors to see the cliffs from both above and below. Birling Gap is the best place to head down onto the beach under the impressive white cliffs, and you can access the beach by foot or by car. There are several paid parking lots above Birling Gap and the area also has toilets, a cafe and a visitor's center.

Showcasing modern and contemporary art, Towner Art Gallery is one of Eastbourne's cultural hubs. The gallery features its own collection, as well as temporary exhibitions, which rotate throughout the year. Towner Art Gallery also hosts events, from film screenings to art talks to tours, and there are often family-friendly offerings for kids. The gallery is part of the 18-mile Coastal Culture Trail along with De La Warr Pavilion and Hastings Contemporary . Visitors can follow the trail by bike, foot or train.

Eat Fish and Chips

Like many English seaside towns, Eastbourne is notorious for its delicious fish and chips. There are a lot of options for visitors to get a taste of some crispy fish and chunky French fries, but your best bet is to head for one of the takeaway shops rather than a sit-down restaurant. Look for Harry Ramsden's , located near the end of the pier, and Qualisea Fish Restaurant , which serves up several types of fried fish, as well as scampi. On Eastbourne Pier, The Chippy sells fresh portions of fish and chips to go, perfect to carry over to the beach for a picnic. 21 best things to do in Eastbourne, East Sussex

A perfect place to catch the sun rise or set over expansive seas, Eastbourne is bursting with things to do.

I love visiting this stately Victorian seaside town, as you can choose between historic attractions, art galleries and museums or fun on the pier or the beach. And luckily for me, Eastbourne is right on my doorstep!

With some of England’s most spectacular coastline a stone’s throw away, including iconic landscapes like Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters, I know you won’t struggle with what to do in Eastbourne. Whether you’re visiting in summer or at another time of year.

Surrounding Eastbourne too are lesser known things to do, such as the opportunity to sample exquisite local produce, including East Sussex wines and vineyard tours. There are quaint villages with pubs serving delicious food too. 

Read on to discover my handpicked selection of the best things to do in Eastbourne, based on my own personal experiences of visiting the town countless times over the years.

Best things to do in Eastbourne

1. explore the south downs national park – by day and night.

The South Downs National Park nudges up against Eastbourne, so it’s perfect to explore from here.

Characterised by rolling chalky grassland, cliffs and a surprising amount of woodland and heathland, believe me when I say that this is a walker’s and landscape-lover’s paradise.

There are lots of trails, footpaths and bridleways to explore around the park. The South Downs Way – a 100-mile walk starting in Winchester – finishes in Eastbourne.

I really recommend not just visiting the South Downs National Park in the daytime, as the park contains one of England’s dark sky reserves.

As such, it’s an impressive place to come after dark with a thermos of cocoa to watch the night’s sky put on a display above you.

2. Have fun on the pier

One of my favourite fun things to do in Eastbourne is to pay a visit to the pier. A classic Victorian pier, and indeed one of the finest you’ll find, Eastbourne Pier offers traditional seaside fun.

Walk the boards to grab some fish and chips, visit some tea rooms, or even go to the Atlantis nightclub. 

3. Go to the beach

I think Eastbourne is perfect for lazy town-styled beach days. The beach is expansive and shingle, right against the town.

There are more than three miles of beach here, so I’m sure you’ll be able to find a free spot. 

If you fancy a dip in the sea then lifeguards operate at Main Resort Beach which stretches from the Wish Tower to the Pier main area.

You can hire deckchairs and sun loungers, and even a beach hut for the day! There are cafés and toilets here too. 

Holywell beach is beautiful and less developed. There’s some rock pooling too if you fancy grabbing a net and exploring.

4. Gaze at artworks at Towner Art Gallery

Opening times:

• Tuesday – Sunday: 10:00 – 17:00
• Every Bank Holiday Monday: 10:00 – 17:00

You can’t miss Towner Art Gallery , as the strikingly coloured building really catches the eye. Move inside and you’ll be treated to some fascinating displays and exhibitions.

The works here are Modern British and are thought provoking and inspiring. Eastbourne has lots of other small art galleries, so I’d recommend checking them out if they take your fancy.

5. Test your head for heights at Beachy Head

Beachy Head is England’s highest chalk cliff – trust me when I say that these cliffs are epic! You can park up not far from the headland and go for a stroll.

The views over the classic red and white lighthouse and sea beyond are majestic and I can guarantee that a cobweb or two will be blown away!

Simply by walking along the headland a little, you get views back with the white cliffs in stark relief against the blue sea.

Just make sure you keep a good distance from the edge of the cliff (I’m far too close in the photo above – don’t be like me!). I think the Beachy Head Pub is perfect for refuelling while you continue to take in the scenery.

Think you’ve been here before? Beachy Head has been used as a film location in films such as Harry Potter, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and James Bond.

6. Get chalky at Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters

When people think of the south coast’s white cliffs, they tend to think of Dover. For me, the most glorious showing of white cliffs is at Birling Gap with the chalky dominance of the Seven Sisters.

Accessed from the lovely village of East Dean, you can climb down the stairs against the cliff until you are on the chalk beach itself.

From here you can clamber over huge chalk mounds and pebbles, while marvelling at the stark white cliffs behind you. 

The beach at Birling Gap is also very peaceful and tranquil. You can go rock pooling, fossil hunting, or simply indulge in some of the best photography opportunities in the area. 

There’s a National Trust visitor centre at the top of the cliff where you can buy refreshments. Be warned, I find that it does get very busy!

However, on the beach itself, just walk a little from the base of the stairs and I love that you often feel as if you’re alone. 

7. Wander amongst the boats at Sovereign Harbour Marina

Opened in 1993, Sovereign Harbour Marina isn’t just a place for motorboat and yacht mooring. This is an elegant area of Eastbourne to simply while away some time.

I’d recommend enjoying a cocktail and some waterside dining, or a spot of boutique shopping.

There’s a splendid mix of restaurants, cafes and bars here and it’s a fabulous place for watching the comings and goings of marina life.

8. Enjoy a trip to the theatre

Eastbourne has two theatres which are particularly worthy of note: The Royal Hippodrome Theatre and the Devonshire Park Theatre both offer a wonderful night out. 

I’d advise checking the schedule before you visit to see if there’s a show which takes your fancy.

9. Watch the skies at Airbourne

Eastbourne’s International Airshow, Airbourne, draws the crowds every year for a feast of air acrobatics and flying craft through the years.

Many head to the pier for the best views, but I’d recommend nabbing a patch of beach or even head further along the coastline if you don’t mind not being so close to the action.

It’s a free event that lasts for four days in August, and you tend to find that lots of other town events spring up at the same time to take advantage of the increased footfall.

There are often pop-up stalls and eateries, as well as displays and demonstrations. 

10. Get your game on at Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club

If you’re visiting Eastbourne the week before Wimbledon, then you can see some seriously impressive tennis at Devonshire Park at the Eastbourne International Tennis.

All year round though, I think that tennis enthusiasts will love a visit to the club. 

11. Enjoy a round of golf at Eastbourne Downs

One of the most spectacular settings for a golf course that I’ve seen is at Eastbourne Downs. It sits up on a high plateau directly behind Beachy Head.

The views over the fairways are wide, allowing you to enjoy incredible sea views over the English Channel and the rolling South Downs. On clear days you can even see as far as the Isle of Wight!

The course is 110 years old and immaculately maintained. Even as a non-golfer, you can benefit from a visit to the bar and restaurant.

12. Tuck into seaside fare at The Beach Deck

You have lots of choice when it comes to places to eat in Eastbourne, but one of my favourites is The Beach Deck.

This is a restaurant by the beach, affording wonderful views, but the star of the show is the food.

Expect fresh locally sourced fish and other regional fare. The food is exquisitely presented and your only problem is deciding between the different dishes on the menu. 

13. All aboard at Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway

In my opinion, one of thebest things to do in Eastbourne, whether you’re young or old, is to ride the Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway.

The track is about a mile long through the forest and the 1/8 th scale railway is just a fun thing to do!

You can also enjoy the surrounding country park with its abundance of wildlife and tea gardens at the Railway Café. 

14. Go kayaking or paddle boarding on the Cuckmere

Cuckmere Haven is a spectacularly beautiful flood plain where the river Cuckmere enters the English Channel, and is part of the Seven Sisters Country Park .

It is a really lovely place to spend a slightly more active afternoon kayaking or paddleboarding.

It’s a popular place, so I recommend that you book in advance if you need to hire equipment. Once you get paddling you’ll soon feel like there are only birds for company.

If you remember your school geography, you will also come across several oxbow lakes! 

15. Go cycling in Friston Forest

Near to Cuckmere Haven and also part of the Seven Sisters Country Park is Friston Forest.

This is a great place to cycle – however energetic you feel – in amongst the dappled sunlight of the beech trees.

There are simple paths and more complicated trails, so you can take your pick. In my opinion, cycling is definitely one of the best activities to do in Eastbourne and the surrounding area.

16. Take in the sights by bus

Like many towns and cities, Eastbourne has a popular and enjoyable open-topped sightseeing bus. It takes in the main sights of the town and of course takes you along the seafront.

You’ll get the opportunity to see places like the bandstand and hop on and hop off as you wish. 

17. Grab some friends for escape room exploits

Xcape Station has a few escape rooms to choose from in Eastbourne and I have no doubt that you’ll have an action-packed, mind-boggling experience.

There is one room suitable for families, as well as one for 15+ and one for 18+. So you can expect an adult-friendly escape room experience with challenge and horror (the 18+ one is themed on abduction!).

Don’t worry though, it’s all fun and games. You can even opt for the Extreme 90 minute experience if you really get your thrills from being scared half to death!

18. Take to the water with Maverick Boat Adventures

A little along the coast from Eastbourne is Newhaven and its Marina. From here, Maverick Boat Adventures run boat trips and charters along the coast aboard their Mediterranean Marlin rib boats.

I think it’s the best way to really see the white cliffs of the area.

You can cruise along the historic coastline on a 1.5 hour tour. There’s even a chance to take a dip from the boat if you want. Don’t worry, there are blankets aboard to wrap up warm afterwards!

If you’d rather have a private charter then this is available too – I recommend it at sunset with Champagne!

19. Indulge in wine tasting with Fizz on Foot

Between Easter and October, Fizz on Foot offer guided walking and wine-tasting tours of the beautiful downland around Eastbourne.

It includes lunch and a vineyard tour, as well as tasting. I think it’s a fantastic way to explore the area – and taste it too!

20. Discover Herstmonceux Castle and Estate

• February & March: 10:00 – 17:00
• April – September: 10:00 – 19:00
• October & November: 10:00 – 17:00

A little inland from Eastbourne you’ll find the magnificent Herstmonceux Castle. It’s a stately moated castle with beautiful gardens to amble through.

Indeed, there are over 500 acres of parklands and gardens here – plenty to keep you occupied and gently entertained.

It’s really lovely to spot the different woodland sculptures, spy the Georgian-style folly and discover the waterlily moat.

21. The Lifeboat Museum

Opening times: Daily 10:00 – 16:00

The Lifeboat Museum in Eastbourne is actually the first ever lifeboat museum that the RNLI created in the UK.

It’s housed in the William Terriss Memorial Boathouse at the western end of the seafront which dates back to 1898.

The museum itself dates from the 1920s. It’s a small museum but I love that it’s bursting with interesting exhibits sharing the tales of rescue endeavours from over the years.

How to get to Eastbourne

Eastbourne is wonderfully accessible from London , so I think it makes the perfect place to escape the city. It takes an hour and a half to get to Eastbourne by train from London Victoria.

If you’re travelling from outside of London then it’s easy to get to Eastbourne by road. Parking is quite generous in Eastbourne, although it can still get busy during the summer and school holidays.

Most car parks are paid during the day, or there is a number of free street parking throughout the town. Just make sure you check the signs to make sure you’re covered.

• Eastbourne is the gateway to the South Downs National Park, ideally located at start of the historic 101 mile South Downs Way. Discover the picturesque villages and stunning scenery on bike or foot.
• There’s no better place to enjoy the sunniest place in the UK than Eastbourne Seafront, stretching out over 3 miles.
• Enjoy dramatic views over the English Channel from the UK's highest chalk cliff, Beachy Head.  Make sure you visit the brand new Beachy Head story exhibition , with tales of history and smugglers past.  Afterwards, you can explore the stunning Seven Sisters Country Park (the Sisters are seven huge chalk cliffs jutting out to sea).

From pier-side fun to antique bookshops and the notorious Turner Prize, the perfect day out in Eastbourne awaits

Previously just escaping under the radar, all eyes are now officially on Eastbourne – not just because we crowned it as the Best Place to Visit in 2023  a little while back, but because the East Sussex seaside town is hosting the world-famous Turner Prize until 14 April 2024. This alone is a reason to swing by, but there are plenty more.

From one of the world’s greatest secondhand bookshops (you have to see it to believe it) to a brilliant roster of independent cafes and restaurants, trendy new hotel options and seriously special countryside and coastal views, Eastbourne wraps up a lot into one genteel getaway. Day trip or longer, here’s what to do.

The best things to do in Eastbourne

1.  Grab coffee at To The Rise

When three of the Pollard sisters started baking sourdough loaves in their parents’ garage in 2019 they didn’t expect their micro-bakery to be quite so popular. With Covid came the crowds, helping the trio launch their own coffee shop and bakery, To the Rise . This is no ordinary bread, but seriously creative pastries – think maple and bacon twists, chai-glazed buns and tahini and halva brownies. Stock up on carbs before a hike in the Downs.

2.  Get your art fix at Towner Eastbourne

The bright colours of Lothar Gotz’s geometric mural – Dance Diagonal – which covers the outside of the Towner Eastbourne sets the scene for  what’s inside: some of the UK’s most impressive contemporary art installations. Until 14 April 2024 the free-to-enter gallery will proudly host the Turner Prize, one of the best known prizes for the visual arts, with high-ceilinged rooms showcasing the work of Jesse Darling, Ghislaine Leung and more. Nearby, Volt is a gallery featuring exhibitions of emerging and underrepresented East Sussex artists.

3.  Peruse the piles at Camilla’s Bookshop

You could lose a day in this crazy cavern of a secondhand bookshop which was set up by Camilla in 1985. Camilla 's stocks everything – and we mean everything – from kids classics like Enid Blyton to crime thrillers and recipe books to niche subjects like rope tying, shipwrecks, knitting, and retro additions titled ‘Recent Advances in Fruit Juice Production’. Books are stacked ceiling high and often three piles deep – breathe in and carefully shuffle between them.

4.  Have lunch at Light

If you don’t visit for the art then visit for the food: Scandi-inspired Light restaurant, on the second floor of the Towner, is one of the most delicious lunch spots in East Sussex. The vegetarian-friendly menu changes once a month, but if you’re lucky you’ll catch the small plate of roasted cauliflower with kimchi and pickled raisins. The sourdough with butter and tarragon oil is a permanent fixture on the menu for good reason.

5.  Hit the pier

Pounding the promenade is a seaside staple and there are plenty of pit stops along Eastbourne’s seafront. Lose your two 2ps in the glitzy gold and royal blue pier and get a scoop of ice cream at Gelato Famoso (and if you’re really into ice cream, compare it with a scoop at Gianni’s on Terminus road). Along the way you’ll pass the bandstand, which proudly claims to be the earth’s busiest thanks to its calendar of events. At the far end, Holywell Beach is a great spot for a dip or a splash around in a rock pool. 

6.  Walk the Downs

If sauntering the seafront doesn’t cut it then a walk along the South Downs will. You’re aiming for Beachy Head – the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain, no less. It’s 530ft of sheer beauty and dramatic lighthouse views, reached by a series of easy to fairly challenging inclines. Spot seals, take in the sunset and if it’s a sunny summer’s day then cool off with a swim on the sandy shores of Birling Gap. 

7.  Hit the shops on South Street and Grove Road

Francois, a South Street shop that’s home to vintage postcards, annuals, football brochures and stamps, is a collector’s dream (it also doesn't have a website). If you’re looking for something more aesthetically pleasing then you’ll find it at All Things Analogue , where the world’s best stationary is meticulously displayed for your viewing – and purchasing – pleasure. A rainbow array of pens are colour coordinated on the shelves, while rubbers, washi tape and notebooks are neatly laid out. If you love a charity shop rummage, you’ll find them around here.

8.  Train spot at Eastbourne Miniature Railway

Temporarily closed, reopening March 2024

Don’t dismiss this as one for the under 10s. Kids and big kids love the EMSR Adventure Park , where tiny ride-on locomotives wind their way around through pretty country gardens. There’s a maze, nature walk and adventure playground (now that part is just for kids) and ten pint-sized locomotives to view. Families drive for miles just to get their steam train fix.

9.  Drink and dine like a local

A night out in Eastbourne is about low-key drinks and great food. Start at Level’s , a bottle shop and craft beer tasting room where 70s vinyls line the wall. You’ll have your pick of evening meals: go casual and cosy at Skylark , which doubles as a cafe during the day, or feast on South Indian dosa, curries and biryani from Malayalam . For something fancier, try Cru – the small plate dining style is handy after a day of eating your way round town.

10.  Sleep at Port Hotel

Eastbourne isn’t short on hotels, but some can feel more coach tour than cool. Port Hotel  has revived the local hotel scene: with its striking matt black facade, which you’ll spot from half way down the promenade, you know it’s vying for a different crowd. Inside the townhouse, soft pink walls are paired with the off-black matt woodwork of the huge bay windows. Concrete sinks, terrazzo tiles and rain showers up the luxe touches. Souvenir searching? Framed art work in the reception area is available to buy for really reasonable prices.

15 Best Things to Do in Eastbourne (East Sussex, England)

While some English seaside towns can feel downtrodden and garish, Eastbourne bucks the trend for the classy Victorian townhouses and hotels that line its seafront.

This sophisticated bearing is exemplified by the Bandstand, a Neo-Grec building, clad with faience and hosting a prom and fireworks display every Wednesday in summer.

Eastbourne is on the eastern cusp of the South Downs National Park, and just west the coast begins to rise hair-raisingly from the shingle beach.

Beachy Head, the tallest chalk cliff in the country, is three miles away and can be part of the walk of a lifetime past the Seven Sisters cliffs to the Cuckmere Valley.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Eastbourne :

1. Beachy Head

Moments into the South Downs National Park is one of the UK’s best known coastal landforms.

Beachy Head is the highest chalk cliff in the country, 162 metres above sea level.

Standing at the highest point, safely away from the edge, you can see into four English counties, from the Isle of Wight and West Sussex’s Selsey Bill in the west to Dungeness in Kent in the east.

There’s a pub by the road, also called The Beachy Head and this is a few steps from a memorial to RAF Bomber Command (there was a relay station here in WWII). The Beachy Head Countryside Centre dips into the human and natural history of the cliffs and has a collection of watercolours of the East Sussex Coast.

2. Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters

West of Beachy head the spine-tingling coast continues along a string of towering chalk cliffs that undulate along dry valleys.

Before you come to them you’ll enter Birling Gap, a small hamlet that is slowly disappearing because of coastal erosion.

Birling Gap is managed by the National Trust, and you can drop in at the visitor centre and go rockpooling and fossil hunting on the beach and wonder at the Seven Sisters to the west.

Back at the visitor centre there’s a cafe for tea and cake in the company of these stunning seascapes.

After that you can carry on towards Cuckmere Valley, part of the Seven Sisters Country Park, to contemplate the Seven Sisters from the other end.

3. Bandstand

Poised above Eastbourne’s main resort beach is a sublime Neo-Grec Bandstand completed in 1935, and a sensational place to watch an open-air concert.

With a semi-circular design and black, green and blue faience cladding, the bandstand can’t be compared to any building in the UK. Facing the stage is an arena, including a middle and upper balcony, with seating for 1,600 spectators.

Up to the 21st century the Bandstand was used mainly for performances military bands, but since 2001 the entertainment has become much more diverse.

Some 150 concerts take place at the Bandstand each year, and every Wednesday in the summer you can catch the 1812 Firework and Proms Concert.

This entails a medley of popular classical tunes culminating in Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture, climaxing with fireworks.

4. Redoubt Fortress

At the dawn of the 19th century Britain was preparing for an a sea attack from France, and the circular Redoubt Fortress on Royal Parade in Eastbourne was part of a sophisticated network of defences.

After the building outlived its purpose as an artillery fort it became a gaol in World War I and then a storage facility in World War II. Towards the end of that conflict anti-aircraft guns were mounted on the platform to shoot down V-1 Flying Bombs.

The Redoubt opens between April and November, and holds the regimental museums for the Royal Sussex Regiment and Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars.

The Redoubt’s courtyard is used for stargazing, movie screenings and lectures in summer, and there’s also a cafe and children’s area.

5. Eastbourne Beach

Eastbourne has more than three miles of shingle beach, all of which is tracked by a promenade.

The main resort beach and the most sociable section in summer, is between the Wish Tower and Eastbourne Pier.

The Wish Tower is a Martello tower from the Napoleonic Wars and has a stirring view along the beachfront.

The beach beside it can fill up quickly on sunny days and is watched by lifeguards all through the summer.

There are “swimming only” sections, painted beach huts, cafes and deck chairs for hire.

When the tide goes out you can head off on a rockpooling adventure with kids.

Further up there’s a designated windsurfing area off Royal Parade.

6. Towner Art Gallery

Eastbourne’s modern and contemporary art museum moved to swish new premises in the town’s Cultural Quarter in 2009. The building is set a short way in from the seafront and has beautiful vistas west to the South Downs.

The Towner Collection is one of the best public art collections in the southeast of England, bolstered by pieces by Picasso, Henry Moore, Olafur Eliasson, Walter Sickert, David Bomberg and Wolfgang Tillmans.

There are up to five temporary exhibitions at the Towner Art Gallery at any time.

In summer 2018 you could check out shows for Israeli video artist Omer Fast, 20th-century artist and designer Eric Ravilious, Realist Edward Stott, and “At Altitude” thematic exhibitions on aerial photography, painting and digital mapping.

7. Sovereign Harbour Marina

Eastbourne’s eastern suburbs would never be the same again after the Sovereign Harbour was opened here in the early 90s.

This humungous marina development comprises four distinct harbours, apartment blocks and residential streets, tied to retail units and restaurants.

In the sunshine it’s enough just to walk along the waterfront and size up the luxury yachts and watch them being lifted and launched.

There are cafes, restaurants and bars with outdoor seating, and if you keep your eyes on the water you should sight a few seals and cormorants.

The zone behind has a multiplex cinema and mainstays of UK retail parks, like TK Maxx, Next and Sports Direct.

8. Royal Hippodrome Theatre

This stately Victorian theatre has an unusually long summer season, starting in March and ending in November.

With a capacity of 630 on three levels, the Royal Hippodrome opened in 1883 and was designed by Charles J. Phipps, who drew up several theatres around London’s West End in the late Victorian period.

The theatre’s programme is configured to have something for all members of the family.

For kids there are pantomimes and productions based on fairytales, while for older audiences the Royal Hippodrome books a diversity of cover acts and high-profile comedians.

On the intellectual side, the autumn “Thinkers Season” is a series of talks by academics, politicians and authors.

In 2018 the historian David Starkey and second-wave feminist Germaine Greer were on the programme.

9. Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway Adventure Park

In a country park near Eastbourne’s Hampden Park suburb is a 1/8 scale miniature railway almost a mile long.

Your carriage will be pulled by one of ten different steam and diesel locomotives, the oldest going back to 1940. The park also has a five-acre lake encircled by a nature trail offering glimpses of native wildlife.

You could finish up with cream tea or a light meal at the park’s award-winning tea gardens, around a cafe with a vintage railway theme.

There are also displays of model railways, a gift shop, picnic areas and an adventure playground for kids.

10. Eastbourne Pier

An icon for Eastbourne since 1870, the 300-metre Eastbourne Pier is a Victorian wonder with lots of facilities and splendid panoramas of the English Channel.

Unfortunately, historic piers such as this are susceptible to fire, and so it was that the graceful domed building at the centre of the pier was lost to a blaze in 2014. The pier has since been bought by an investor and remainder of the structure and outer pavilion have been reopened, containing shops, tea rooms, a waterside cafe, a fish and chips shop and a nightclub.

11. Lifeboat Museum

The William Terriss Memorial Boathouse on the west side of Eastbourne’s seafront was erected in 1898 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) as a lifeboat station.

After it was vacated in the 1920s the boathouse became the first of many RNLI museums around the UK. This compact museum has information boards telling the story of daring rescues operations down the years, for the New Brunswick in 1883, the SS Barnhill in 1940 and the SS Germania in 1955, with artefacts from each ship like bells, life preservers and communications equipment.

12. South Downs Way

Eastbourne is at the eastern limit of the South Downs National Park, and is also at the conclusion of the South Downs Way, a National Trail that begins in Winchester 100 miles to the west.

The last few miles of the trail form a loop on the west side of the town, so you can begin the walk on the end of King Edward’s Parade and cross Beachy Head, the Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters on foot, stopping at Cuckmere Haven for that breathtaking view.

From there you’ll traverse bucolic rolling chalk hills speckled with sheep, as you turn back towards Eastbourne for a walk of about five hours.

13. Princes Park

Go east along the seafront and before long you’ll be at this 33-acre park, which is as fastidiously maintained as you’d expect from Eastbourne.

Princes Park has a fragrant rose garden, informal English-style gardens, a large model boating lake and bowling greens.

Visiting families can make the most of two playgrounds (one with a paddling pool in summer) and an 18-hole putting green, while on the east fringe is Fort Fun, a separate indoor play centre for little ones.

The park’s remodelled boathouse has a cafe looking over the lake.

14. The Pavilion

In the gardens next to the Redoubt Fortress, the Pavilion is a bow-shaped tea room with a terrace facing the sea.

You can follow up a visit to the fortress with a light meal or afternoon tea, but there are also regularly updated exhibitions in this space.

In summer 2018 the Pavilion hosted “Eastbourne Remembers”, an exhibition themed on memory, heirlooms and keepsakes.

In display cases are dresses and trinkets passed down generations, with boards telling the stories behind them.

Something that will intrigue mudlarks is the collection of coins thrown into the pond at Motcombe Gardens over the last 100 years.

15. Eastbourne International

At the end of June the plush Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club puts on one of the main events in the summer grass season.

Eastbourne International is on the WTA and ATP tours, though has traditionally been recognised as women’s tournament.

It all happens the week before Wimbledon, and that’s one of the reasons there’s always a strong field, so you can be assured of a feast of top-class tennis.

Karolína Plíšková took the women’s title in 2017, and Novak Djokovic was men’s champion.

Whole day tickets start as low as £20, which is a fraction of the price at Wimbledon, and of course there’s much more ticket availability.

Take a walk down Eastbourne Pier

Eastbourne Pier is a beautiful example of a Victorian pier that was opened by Lord Edward Cavendish in 1870. It has been subject to much damage over the years, including rough storms in 1877, which resulted in it being rebuilt at a higher level. It also hosted machine guns during the Second World War, when an exploding mine again damaged the pier. In 2014, the Pier caught fire once more and it has since been restored where it is now home to the Victorian Tea Rooms, a chippy, and a nightclub. Take a stroll along the 300m pier and enjoy beautiful views across the English Channel.

Explore Beachy Head and Birling Gap

Just a short distance from Eastbourne town centre is Beachy Head and Birling Gap. Birling Gap is owned by the National Trust and is located at the point where the South Downs meets the sea. There is a car park here and a café with toilets. From the car park, you can head down the steps onto the pebble beach. You can also take a short, approximately half a mile walk heading east to take you to the lovely Belle Tout Lighthouse, a lovely grade II listed building that was decommissioned in 1902 and replaced by the Beachy Head Lighthouse. If you fancy a longer walk, you can also walk from Birling Gap to The Beachy Head pub which is approximately 2.5 miles one way. Located next to The Beachy Head pub is The Beachy Head Story, which is an exhibition and gift shop which is also worth a visit.

Take a ride on Eastbourne's Open Top Bus

If you’re looking for a way to see the whole of Eastbourne, then Eastbourne’s Open Top Bus is for you! You can pick up or hop off the bus at 16 different locations in Eastbourne, including Eastbourne Pier, Eastbourne Bandstand, the foot of Beachy Head, Beachy Head, Birling Gap, East Dean and Eastbourne railway station. Adult tickets cost £10 each and allow you to hop on and off as many times as you like in 24 hours. The whole journey from Eastbourne round to Birling Gap and back via East Dean is 50 minutes long. Buses normally run every 30 minutes from April to the beginning of September and every 45 minutes in September and May. The bus does not run from October to the end of April.

Cycle in the South Downs National Park

The South Downs Way is perfect for exploring by bike, where you can enjoy stunning views back across to Eastbourne, and across the English Channel. Eastbourne sits at the eastern end of the South Downs Way, and so from here, you can head West along the South Downs Way as far as you desire.

The South Downs Way is a notoriously challenging terrain to cycle so many choose to hire an E-bike allowing you to cover a longer distance and save the legs a bit! Cadence has a new hub in Eastbourne which is located opposite the Congress Theatre, ideally located on the west of Eastbourne not too far from the South Downs Way. Here you can hire an E-bike for between 2 and 6 hours. They have a range of different bikes in varying frame sizes and they will give you a quick demo before you set off!

Play Mini Golf in Helen Garden

Located to the west of Eastbourne, at the end of the South Downs Way, is Helen Garden, a public park that opened in 1935.

Helen Garden is home to an 18 hole mini putting green, children’s playground, Pétanque court and a kiosk serving drinks, ice creams and snacks. Perched on top of a cliff, with stunning views across the beach, Helen Gardens are also the perfect spot for a picnic. The putting green and Pétanque court can both be booked at the kiosk.

Located just a short walk west of Eastbourne Pier, on the seafront, is Eastbourne Bandstand. The bandstand was built in 1935 and is one of the UK’s busiest bandstands, which is particularly distinctive due to its bright blue domed roof.

The bandstand regularly puts on a range of live music, attracting thousands of visitors each year.

Visit Sovereign Harbour Marina

To the west of the main Eastbourne town centre is Sovereign Harbour Marina that consists of five harbours and over 800 berths.

The marina is lovely to wander around and explore each of the harbours. Also located at the marina is The Waterfront which is home to a number of eateries – perfect for a coffee with views across the harbour.

Each year, during June in the week before Wimbledon, Eastbourne hosts the Eastbourne International tennis tournament at Devonshire Park.

This tournament welcomes some of the highest-ranked tennis players in the world and the smaller courts in comparison to Wimbledon allow you to see the game up close!

The next event will take place from 20 June – 26 June 2022.

Explore Herstmonceux Castle

Herstmonceux Castle is a majestic moated castle dating back to the 15th century. It is located 9 miles north of Eastbourne, or approximately a 20-25 minute drive away. The castle is a beautiful demonstration of a brick-built castle, which also offers 300 acres of gardens to explore.

Within the gardens are a number of smaller, distinctive gardens, including a rose garden, Apothecary Garden and the Lower Garden, which is full of butterfly-friendly flowers. A short walk from the castle is a pretty Georgian folly and a lovely woodland area that is home to some impressive old sweet chestnut trees.

Also located at the castle is Chestnuts Tea Rooms, serving various lunch items and drinks and snacks.

Cycle the Cuckoo Trail

The Cuckoo Trail is a 14-mile long trail suitable for walkers, cyclists and horse riders that runs along an old disused railway line. The trail links the market town of Heathfield in the north, to Hampden Park, a suburb of Eastbourne, in the south.

The route is largely traffic-free and passes through Horam, Hellingly, Hailsham and Polegate. The route is also well signposted and is fairly flat, making it suitable for all ages and abilities.

As the route passes through the East Sussex countryside, there is plenty of wildlife and nature along the trail. Keep your eyes peeled for cuckoos, dunnocks, orange tip butterflies, bullfinches, and lesser whitethroats.

What is eastbourne most famous for.

The sun often shines on Eastbourne, which goes some way to explaining why it’s such a popular choice for resident and visiting retirees. But the town’s starting to shed its genteel, old-fashioned image as an influx of students and a sizeable Portuguese and Polish expat community stamp their mark on the place.

The jewel in Eastbourne ’s crown is undoubtedly the miles of beaches that, thanks to the south of England’s mild climate, are lined with palm trees. Nearby, the countryside has the wow factor, with spectacular headlands and bays carved out of the chalk cliffs and the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park on the doorstep.

Eastbourne pier, one of the town’s most popular attractions.

As with many of England’s seaside pleasure piers, Eastbourne Pier has had a chequered past. Work started on the structure in 1866 and though the pier was formally opened 4 years later, it wasn’t until 1872 that it was properly finished. Storms damaged the pier only a few years later and an exploding mine made a direct hit during World War II. A couple of fires partially destroyed it in the post-war period.

Today, thanks to an injection of cash and an owner prepared to invest in its future, a restored Eastbourne Pier is one of the town’s most popular visitor attractions. A Victorian-style tearoom, traditional fish and chip shop, jazz lounge and several event spaces make this a popular spot for locals and visitors.

Sovereign Harbour Marina

Take a boat trip along eastbourne’s coast.

Eastbourne’s Sovereign Harbour Marina serves the yachting and motor cruiser communities. All the facilities you’d expect from a marina are present, from fuel, electrical hookups and pump-out stations. In addition, there are cafés, restaurants and shops.

Full Throttle Boat Charters run thrilling boat trips in RIBs (Rigid-hulled Inflatable Boats). The ride is bumpy and rough, but a lot of fun. Before its iconic lighthouse was planned for dismantling in 2020, you could take a trip along the coast from Sovereign Harbour Marina towards Beachy Head and see this landmark structure rise from the water. Even so, the scenic cliffs are worth the trip. Wear waterproofs – you’ll get wet!

A seafront landmark rich in history.

Britain constructed Eastbourne’s Wish Tower in the early 1800s as part of a series of coastal fortifications. They were designed as a defence against an incursion by Napoleon Bonaparte. Around 100 were built, but only 43 survive. The Wish Tower is one of only 2 that remain in good condition and in public hands. Today, volunteers lead guided tours through the tower and its dry moat to help pay for the maintenance of this piece of Eastbourne’s heritage.

Nearby, the Lifeboat Museum, housed in an old boathouse, tells the story of sea rescues and the lifeboats that have helped keep the area’s residents safe since 1822. At the other end of this seafront garden, stands a statue of Spencer Compton, Duke of Devonshire, who held office as Mayor of Eastbourne, Leader of the Liberal Party and Leader of the House of Lords in the late 19 th century and early 20th century.

Eastbourne Redoubt

An icon of eastbourne’s seafaring past.

Eastbourne Redoubt was one in a string of coastal forts built in the early 19th century to repel an attack from Napoleon’s armies. By the time it was finished, however, the threat had passed. Its guns were only fired once at a perceived enemy, a French warship, though they missed. For many years the Redoubt was a garrison; today, as a result, a military museum tells the story of the Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars and the Royal Sussex Regiment.

The sculpture at the entrance to the Redoubt is a nod to Eastbourne’s seafaring past. The Azimuth sculpture consists of sections of reclaimed sea defences. Depending on your interpretation, they can represent a mythical sea creature or the bones of a shipwrecked vessel. Look closely, the artist has carved tales of historical events into the wood.

Miniature Steam Railway

Ride on mini trains through a beautiful park.

The 1/8 th scale locomotives of Eastbourne’s Miniature Steam Railway loop a country park on a meandering course of around a mile. Among the 10 locomotives owned and used by the railway are a model of an LMS Royal Scot Class Locomotive in its distinctive burgundy livery, and a GWR class 38XX in forest green. The oldest locomotive in the collection is a scale replica of the LNER A1 Class ‘4472 Flying Scotsman’.

The park centres on a large lake which is a haven for wildlife and birds. For children, there’s a maze and adventure playground. Enthusiasts will also appreciate the model railway layouts and railway-themed gift shop.

Eastbourne Beach

Take in the coastal view.

Like others in the area, Eastbourne Beach consists mostly of shingle but is wide enough to be usable even on a high tide. There are around 3 miles of beaches in the town, some of them providing opportunities for water sports. At low tide, in some places, the waves retreat to leave little rock pools and the promise of ancient fossils.

A short distance from the centre, Holywell Retreat is a quaint stretch of beach in a Marine Conservation area with quintessentially English beach huts, a café and the cliff-hugging Italian Gardens. Those in search of solitude will enjoy the peace and quiet of King Edward Beaches, from which the views along the coastline’s chalk cliffs are excellent.

The Treasure Island Adventure Park is a popular indoor-outdoor theme park in Eastbourne. Wannabe pirates and buccaneers will love the nautical theme. Summer’s perfect for a visit to Long John Silver’s Outdoor Adventure. Kids will love climbing and playing along the shipwreck’s slides, bridges and netted walkways. There's even a zip line and plenty of hidden treasure to find in the sandy beach.

If the British weather is being too British, head inside and experience the Buccaneers Indoor Adventure. This soft play area has ball pits, slides, and zip lines, with a separate area for the smallest members of the family.

Beachy Head

A spectacular spot where land meets the sea.

Beachy Head is a headland close to Eastbourne and at 162 metres tall is Britain’s highest chalk cliff. As a result, suicides are relatively common, making this one of the UK’s most notorious coastal locations. The base is continually pounded by the English Channel waves, its relatively soft rock no match for their power. Rockfalls are common; occasionally, after periods of heavy rain and cold weather, frost shattering can blow sections of the cliff face apart with dramatic consequences.

Visitors can stroll along the clifftop path, enjoying views from Dungeness to Selsey Bill. The highlight for many is the Seven Sisters, which take their name from the 7 chalk hills that collectively make up this part of Sussex. They’re a picturesque sight, featuring in movies such as Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves (1991) and Atonement (2007).

Congress Theatre Eastbourne

The 1,700-seat Congress Theatre is Eastbourne’s premier theatre venue. This Grade II-listed venue is the largest theatre on the south coast. Purpose-built and recently refurbished, it’s a popular destination for a night out in Eastbourne.

The Beacon Eastbourne Mall

Shop and dine at eastbourne’s shopping centre.

Eastbourne’s shopping centre, The Beacon, occupies a prominent location in the town centre. Most of the usual names on the British High Street are represented, including Marks and Spencer, Boots and Next.

In common with other similar retail centres, there are also several food outlets, among them Millie’s Cookies, McDonald’s and Nandos. Tiny tots can burn off some energy in the soft play area.
