Man utd pre-season guide: tour, fixtures, kick-off times & how to watch.

Man United will be hoping their pre-season tour can mark the beginning of a new era at Old Trafford.

  • Manchester United have had a season to forget, and it remains unclear if Erik ten Hag will be removed as manager.
  • Their pre-season tour in 2024 is taking place in America for the second year in a row.
  • They will play Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Betis across the pond, while also facing Rangers and Rosenborg beforehand in Europe.

Very few things in life can ever be predicted. Nature is unpredictable, with the world consistently throwing curveballs towards everyone, yet the constant cycle of Manchester United can be expected. One impressive year, followed by a year of struggle; it's happened ever since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013.

In the 2023/2024 campaign, United have struggled, unsurprisingly, after winning the Carabao Cup and qualifying for the Champions League the year before. Pressure is building on Erik ten Hag, knowing the new owners want to start a new era. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have made it clear they have major ambitions for the Red Devils ; whether they can be completed with the Dutchman in charge remains to be seen.

Despite a season of disappointment, the focus will turn over to a new leaf — and Man United's pre-season tour in 2024 starts that. The opportunity to recruit players, shift out the old guard and create a philosophy which is capable of winning the Premier League is never easy, but that is Ratcliffe's goal. It epitomises the current state of United that it is unclear who will be their manager for the trip to North America in the summer.

Pre-Season Tour

Manchester United will be travelling to America this summer to embark on a tour across the country. They played there in 2023, which saw 235,168 fans watch the Red Devils over the four matches. It is expected that there will be similar numbers this time around. Last year, they beat Arsenal 2-0 (and then on penalties in an unconventional system), lost 3-1 to Wrexham, although it was their youth team, beat Real Madrid 2-0 and lost 3-2 to Dortmund . Considering they were playing a handful of the best teams in the world, it was an impressive period, even if they failed to replicate that form in competitive matches.

When this year's pre-season tour was announced, then-football director of the club, John Murtough, said : “We had an incredible time during last year’s visit to the US and we are pleased to be returning with the men’s team to prepare for the 2024/25 season. The popularity of English football is continuously growing in the US, and we’ve come to expect passionate and enthusiastic support from our US fan base. They didn’t disappoint last year and everyone at the club is looking forward to reconnecting with those fans again this summer."

“Having secured some of the best sporting facilities the US has to offer, the club will create the optimum environment for the team to reconnect after their summer break, and work on match fitness before the start of the Premier League season."

"The quality of opponents lined up to play is at the highest level, giving the players an opportunity to gain valuable playing time, and for fans to see some of the most famous teams in world football playing live.

Andre Onana's Man United Stats vs David de Gea in His Final Season

“As is the club’s tradition during pre-season, we’re expecting this tour to not only help prepare our first-team players but also give some of our exciting up-and-coming Academy talent the opportunity to experience training and playing within a first-team environment at some of the most impressive and historical US stadiums."

Before Man United take the journey across the pond, they will be embarking on two friendlies in Europe. They begin their pre-season against Rosenborg on the 15th July in Norway. Remarkably, the two sides have never met one another in a competitive match, so the occasion will be an opportunity for fans of both teams to watch a rare sight.

After a trip to Norway, the Red Devils will play Rangers five days later. However, it won't be at Rangers' home, Ibrox, in Glasgow; instead, it will unconventionally take place at Murrayfield in Edinburgh - the home of Scottish rugby. They've only played one another four times competitively, most recently in 2010 when Sir Alex Ferguson's side won 1-0 in Scotland. Remarkably, the Scottish giants have never beaten them, so - even if it is a friendly - they will still want to claim the bragging rights in a likely feisty match.

However, these two matches only precede the main event - the opportunity to break the North American market once again. The Red Devils are one of the most well-supported clubs in the world, and given football clubs are always looking to increase their revenue, it's no surprise they are trying to market that opportunity the best they can.

Their first match in America sees them play Premier League rivals Arsenal in the Premier League. The two sides have always been vying for glory at the top of the table, producing countless iconic matches. Cesc Fabregas even once threw pizza at Sir Alex Ferguson after Man United ended Arsenal's 49-game unbeaten streak, whilst everyone remembers when the Gunners lost 8-2 at Old Trafford.

It's unlikely anything like this would ever be replicated in a friendly between the two sides in Los Angeles, but both managers will want to start the 2024/2025 campaign on the front foot. Bruno Fernandes vs Martin Odegaard. Kobbie Mainoo vs Declan Rice. Marcus Rashford vs Bukayo Saka. Clear matchups are already being set up across the pitch, which will excite any fans attending immediately.

Manchester United's 10 Biggest Rivals Ranked

Once the match against Arsenal is out of the way, United have an easier test against Spanish side Real Betis. The Red Devils have only faced Real Betis in two competitive fixtures and these were played in March 2023, as Erik ten Hag's side triumphed 4-1 at home and 1-0 away in the Europa League Round of 16. It may be one of the few times they play a European team, with it looking increasingly unlikely they will qualify for European football. The match will be taking place at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, and while at the venue last year, they lost 3-1 to National League champions Wrexham, a team co-owned by Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: When Man United last played Real Betis, Marcus Rashford scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win.

United's final match in America sees them playing bitter rivals Liverpool at the Williams-Brice Stadium in South Carolina - three days after playing Real Betis. Remarkably, during the 2023/2024 campaign, the Manchester side won once and drew twice against Jurgen Klopp's men, despite struggling all season. It featured one of the greatest matches in FA Cup history , as the Red Devils dramatically won 4-3 at Old Trafford, with Amad Diallo scoring the winning goal in the 120th minute - it epitomised the essence of the rivalry.

Ten Hag's side are yet to confirm if they will play any more friendlies back in Europe after their American pre-season tour. The Premier League doesn't start until the 17th August, giving them just under two weeks to get prepared and potentially fit one more match into their hectic schedule.

Tickets for Man United's matches in America can be found on Ticketmaster . Prices vary depending on the seat and the fixture, with the matches against Arsenal and Liverpool naturally being more expensive. Tickets for the match against Real Betis are yet to go on sale, but it is expected they will be cheaper than the other events.

Meanwhile, you can buy tickets for the matches against Rangers and Rosenborg for respectable prices starting from £50. All of them are available via general sale so far, but they are expected to sell out before they take place. Man United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have a major global fanbase.

Man United's 11 if Erik ten Hag Had Signed His Top Targets

How to watch man utd's pre-season fixtures on tv.

All of Man United's pre-season will be streamed on the club's subscription streaming service, MUTV. Annual passes can be bought for £29.99 or you can pay £7.99 for an individual month, which would cover you for every pre-season match if you brought it as the first contest started. Most clubs in the Premier League stream their own pre-season matches, whilst the matches in America might be shown on TV, but it is yet to be confirmed. It is likely that the derby between Man Utd and Liverpool will be the most-watched occasion in pre-season, with the two rivals set to go head-to-head once again.

Daniel Pemberton Headshot and Spider-Verse Orchestra

Following last week’s announcement of the now fast-selling U.K. tour, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse composer Daniel Pemberton is revealing that the film’s live-in-concert experience is now web-swinging across the Atlantic and into the States.

The Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated composer channeled the rave and club scenes of ‘90s London to create the musical identity of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga. And while this experimental approach could be done with relative ease in the recording studio, Pemberton was initially uncertain if the multidimensional scores of Into the Spider-Verse and now Across the Spider-Verse could be re-created for a continuous live-to-picture performance.

“ I always thought it’d be impossible to do live, because they jump between so many different ideas and genres. But a long time ago, I did a couple of cues at a one-off film music festival, and I was really surprised at how effective it worked,” Pemberton tells The Hollywood Reporter . “So that got my brain thinking about trying to do the whole film live, and we did a couple of tests that went down phenomenally.”

Pemberton is quick to credit the Phil Lord- and Chris Miller-produced films for providing him with the leeway that inherently comes with the franchise’s revolutionary approach to animation.

Below, during a recent conversation with THR in support of Across the Spider-Verse ’s U.S. tour announcement, Pemberton also explains how the first cue he ever wrote for Across wound up serving as the film’s thematic bookends involving Gwen Stacy.

So how did you arrive at this point where Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse both have live concerts and tours?

The Spider-Verse films probably have the most complicated scores I’ve ever done, and I always thought it’d be impossible to do live, because they jump between so many different ideas and genres. But a long time ago, I did a couple of cues at a one-off film music festival, and I was really surprised at how effective it worked. So that got my brain thinking about trying to do the whole film live, and we did a couple of tests that went down phenomenally.

So Into the Spider-Verse has now been on a tour, and it’s crazy that it’s become quite a huge thing with a touring band and a whole bunch of musicians driving around America in a truck. But we’ve only done Across the Spider-Verse live once, and that was at the Academy Museum in L.A. That was the first and only time it’s been done so far, but it’s so much work to get the show watertight. Once you’ve done that, then you can start working out how to turn it into a touring show.

On certain dates, will you be there to pick up a guitar and play various other instruments?

There are moments in the score with opera singing and whistling. Will the live shows actually have designated opera singers and whistlers?

The whistling we normally do live, but the opera singer is probably going to be on track. There are a lot of things in this score that are so complex to balance. So we’re trying to give a live experience, but it’s not like a symphonic orchestra where every single element is all being performed live. We have loads of live stuff backed with electronics and turntables, and that’s the only way we could really make it work. It’s really about how much of an exciting show it is. And if you see the show on two different nights, you are going to get a slightly different experience, but also a very unique live experience.

What percentage of Into the Spider-Verse ’s score did you expand on in Across the Spider-Verse ?

For me, great film music is when you have strong themes and strong identities that are completely recognizable to that film. Great film music is when you can hear something away from the film and it takes you back into that universe. And that can be as simple as a certain noise or a huge melody. And with Spider-Verse , we have created quite a unique melody and sound, so it’s really fun to keep expanding on that. Everything is connected in these two movies. Every sound and motif connects together.

One of the things that’s been interesting is watching the reactions of younger filmgoers who are starting to learn about cinema and film music and how surprised they are at thematic continuity and motifs that can connect characters. It is one of those very iconic and also straightforward parts of film music. But there hasn’t been a consistent approach, especially with the superhero movies over the last couple of decades. Often you have different composers scoring different episodes in different franchises, and if you look at The Lord of the Rings or Star Wars movies, there is a very strong thematic and melodic approach between those. You’ve got one vision, one composer, and with Spider-Verse , that’s what we’re trying to do. So, for a lot of younger people, that’s often quite new to them, which is obviously quite weird to me.

Yeah, it’s really difficult. In the good old days of film music, the composer would get a cut, write their piece of music, and then they’d record it and stick it on the film. And then there’s a round of applause for everyone. In the modern world and the modern way of film composing, everything changes all the time. So you might write something to picture, but then that picture might get slightly tweaked: something gets put in or extended or taken out at the last minute. So the music is always in flux, and while you can make that work for a film, you can’t do that when you have musicians playing it live. You have to make it in a way that is enjoyable and exciting for the musicians to play. If the musicians are only thinking about the technicality of very complicated tempo changes, which you might have when you’re editing a film to move between things, it is going to be a terrible live performance. So, like Ludwig, I had to go back to the beginning and rebuild the score, scene by scene. Some scenes will be slightly different on a very minuscule level. I’m talking tiny, tiny stuff, but you still have to build the whole thing from the ground up again, and that is very time consuming. It’s a bit like pulling a car apart and rebuilding it. You get to learn all the bits in the score again. But I saw Ludwig’s performance. It was brilliant, but I would not want to be a musician during that performance. It never stops. It’s exhausting. It’s a beautiful score, but Oppenheimer feels like the musician equivalent of running two marathons back to back.

I like to think it was the other way around because he saw mine first. ( Laughs .) So he came to my show, and we worked with some of the same people, actually. It was the same production team, so Mike Kasper from Black Ink worked on that with Ludwig. But we like to keep an eye on what each other is doing. We’re good friends, and I’ve got massive respect for his work. It also makes me a bit jealous, so that’s a good sign.

Are composers pretty competitive with one another?

Oh, for sure. The best film music in the world is stuff that makes 50 percent of me incredibly jealous and annoyed, because it’s better than anything I’ve done and it’s everything I aspire to do. And the other 50 percent is like, “This is everything film music should be.” So you’re incredibly excited because it’s everything you care about, and when you hear it done well, it’s very exciting. So it’s the 50-50 rule of excitement and jealousy. If you get that, then it’s a great score.

Ludwig also had tempo changes to account for, so they had to introduce a new click track just one bar before the tempo change happened on the page. Did you run into similar tempo challenges?

On Oppenheimer , there’s loads and loads of crazy tempo changes, and I remember Ludwig telling me about that when we were having a beer in London. And what’s interesting about that is you’ll get smudge and imperfection. Sometimes, this can be really interesting because players are not all going to play together, and we have something similar to that with Spot, the baddie in Across the Spider-Verse . I recorded multiple de-tuned cello parts that weren’t all in tune, and if you keep tracking stuff that’s de-tuned, it’s like drawing a line many times. If you draw a straight line once, and then you badly draw a line 60 times, you will start to get a feeling of where the central line is, making it very unstable and interesting. So we have something similar with the cellos. They’re detuned, but they all align around one melody. That’s more of a melodic idea than a tempo idea, but putting multiple tempo changes in is something I try to avoid. It’s a nightmare when it comes to editing, so if you don’t have to do it, don’t do it.

Yeah, it’s different, and I like working that way. It allows you to experiment and not be dictated to by the picture. So I will go through a very long process, which I call research and development, where I’ll try out loads of ideas and come up with sounds, themes, motifs. So I do write that way, but to do a film like Spider-Verse , the music is so reactive to the picture. You can’t just slap a track on and then go to the pub. You have to work at it so much to make it in sync with the visuals and in sync with the story, because the movie moves at an incredible pace and you have to hit so many different emotions and beats within seconds of each other. So I need to write themes that you recognize within two seconds because we are going to move somewhere else afterwards, and that’s a very complicated task. If you’re doing an indie film where you might have one tone or one mood, it’s easier to do that, but this has the movement of a big blockbuster. So you need music that’s incredibly nimble, and over the years, the only thing that’s been able to deal with that kind of nimbleness has been the symphony orchestra. So I was always like, “How do I create a sound and a palette and an approach that has the speed and nimbleness of a full orchestra but isn’t a full orchestra? Something new, something different.” And with Spider-Verse , we created all these techniques through scratching, turntables, weird electronic sound design, live orchestra drums, and we built a language that allowed me to write a score that could be that reactive to picture. But you try to do it in a way that hopefully feels elegant and simplistic enough that you don’t notice the movement.

The cue that bookends Across is probably my favorite, as Gwen’s ( Hailee Steinfeld ) heavy drum parts are right in my wheelhouse.

So I reworked it for that, and then much later, for the ending of the film, we didn’t know what to do and we tried different approaches. And then a great [supervising] music editor on Spider-Verse called Katie Greathouse, who’s a very important part of the team, just said, “Oh, why don’t we try that track over this?” So she just pulled it out and put it on, and we were like, “Fuck, this really works. Wow.” So I was like, “OK, the idea works, but I need to go away and rework it.” So I ran to this other office, because I was working in the same offices as all of them, and then I just wrote like crazy. And suddenly, we had the ending. So that was one of the most exciting moments for me; I felt we had something that was really special. By the way, that bit is great live. It’s such a fun ending to end a concert on.

Every live set list has a song or a cue that every musician anticipates, usually because it’s the most challenging piece. Is there one in particular that will allow your musicians to breathe easier once they nail it live?

So it’s a very unique and unusual way to experience cinema. I don’t know of anything else that’s like this communal experience with an audience. I know Americans like to make a lot more noise, but people are generally quite restrained in cinema. And I like that. I am not a big fan of lots of noise in the cinema, but when you see a film live with an orchestra and a band and a scratch DJ, make as much noise as you want. It’s a whole different way of seeing a film. So that’s why I’m excited for people to experience this on tour. You can’t have this cool and unique experience anywhere else.

If you were handed these exact movies in live-action or you went into them with the foreknowledge that they were live-action, how different would both scores be in your estimation?

I enjoyed it.

Cathy [Yan], the director, had a very strong and unusually different vision for how that film should feel and look, and I got very excited by that. So I felt that it was a way to be a bit more creative, and that score is probably close to what Spider-Verse sounds like. It’s more trashy guitar-based, but if you look at King Arthur: Legend of the Sword that I did with Guy Ritchie, that’s got a similar sort of aesthetic where I got to do something a bit more creative. So it always depends on the film and the filmmakers and the approach, really, but I like things where you can push at the edges a bit more.

From Aaron Sorkin and Danny Boyle to Spider-Verse , is there an underlying principle to working on opposite ends of the spectrum? Do these projects have more in common than people might realize?

Ticket touts are looking to score a serious profit ahead of Manchester City's Premier League finale against West Ham.

City's win at Tottenham put them two points clear at the top of the Premier League, knowing victory will seal the title on the final day. If they can't win, a draw may be enough but they would need Arsenal to lose or draw themselves owing to their inferior goal difference compared to the Gunners.

City fans will hope for a calmer final day than the last time the title went down to the wire - when Ilkay Gundogan was needed to secure a dramatic 3-2 comeback having been two goals behind. The 2012 last day has gone down as a key moment in City's history, when Sergio Aguero scored in the 93rd minute to secure the title from the waiting hands of Manchester United .

The Blues have also sealed the title on the final day on two other occasions in recent memory, including against West Ham at the Etihad in 2014, and that anticipation of a party atmosphere has seen resale prices for tickets rocket into the thousands.

Season-ticket holders who cannot attend games are encouraged to sell back their seat to the club for a proportional cost of their season ticket, with the club often reselling that seat at a higher price. But fans - and touts - will often try and get that profit for themselves, and there are currently dozens of seats available on various ticketing resale websites ahead of the final day.

Third tier tickets on resale sites begin at around £165, with lower tier seats available from around the £230 mark. While there are many available at those price points, some touts are hoping to seal a serious profit as some tickets in central areas can be bought for hundreds of pounds, rising into the thousands.

The most expensive general sale tickets on sale seen by MEN Sport were a pair for £3000 each in block 127 - the area directly to the left of Pep Guardiola's home dugout. If fans wanted to secure hospitality tickets through the resale websites, it could cost them thousands for a single ticket, with two sets of VIP packages on sale for over £4000 per person, and a hospitality box offered for £8000 per person for a group of six.

Fans invaded the pitch after last season's home win against Chelsea , with City having been confirmed as champions the day before when Arsenal lost to Nottingham Forest. There were similar pitch invasions after the Aston Villa win and previous title wins.

William Saliba carries Arsenal past Manchester United as Premier League title race goes to final day

The french defender gave united nothing in a game where the gunners needed to win to stay firmly in the race.

On a day where so many of Arsenal's greatest technical qualities deserted them, William Saliba showed the steel of champions. A fearless, purposeful and youthful Manchester United approached their task with admirable purpose. They just never really got a sniff. On so many trips to Old Trafford since Sylvain Wiltord won the league in 2002, United have looked bigger, stronger, more streetwise. Not on Sunday. Saliba was like the playground bully. Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo might swing and charge, but like Scrappy Doo, they couldn't lay a glove on the big bad.

It was not that easy for the rest of Saliba's teammates. For 36 games Arsenal had held their demons at bay. At the graveyard of so many of their contemporaries over the last 20 years and change, they got spooked. There are few more convincing explanations for a timid, slow first half in which these second ball vacuums were bouncing off Manchester United bodies, sloppily distributing the ball from their own third, wasting too much time getting it into their opponents.

Thomas Partey's was the headloss in chief, a relic from last season's Arsenal, a side who may have been set off course by injuries but never got back onto it because they were too caught up in the moment. Five bright minutes to start the game were nearly undone when he tried to dummy Scott McTominay, whose poke on the ball teed up Rasmus Hojlund to drive high and wide. The Ghanaian flung himself to the ground as Amad Diallo charged at the box, there was never a convincing case for a United penalty but Partey was positioning himself to do something very damaging.

A better United would have punished clumsiness that extended to such usually cool hands as Ben White, Bukayo Saka and even Declan Rice. Erik ten Hag did not have the chance to name that sort of team but the young bucks he did deploy were determined to seize their moment. Diallo played with a vigor that had you wondering why, beyond the fact that his manager has invested so much political capital in him, Antony has been given so many chances on the right wing. Too many of Garnacho's crosses were of last season's more wasteful vintage. He was more effective crashing to the byline, firing crosses where Hojlund or McTominay ought to have been.

You couldn't fault the industry of this young side but without Mason Mount or Marcus Rashford, let alone Bruno Fernandes, they lacked the guile required to break down England's best defense. United's performance was typified by Kobbie Mainoo. He misplaced only two of his 51 passes but all too often the youngster was looking backwards, giving his side control without penetration. Frankly, just one of the two was quite the step up from the team that so fouled things up at Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Don't miss CBS Sports Golazo Network's Morning Footy, now in podcast form! Our crew brings you all the news, views, highlights and laughs you need to follow the Beautiful Game in every corner of the globe, every Monday-Friday all year long.

Typified by the youngsters it might have been but it was defined by an altogether more experienced figure. You would not have known that Casemiro was that sort as he ambled back towards the rest of his defense when Andre Onana clipped the ball into midfield. Saliba, as he so often would, won his duel and Kai Havertz knew. Screaming for the ball to come his way immediately, he got it with Casemiro playing him onside by a margin of about five yards.

If you wanted to offer mitigating circumstances, that a career defensive midfielder doesn't often need to worry about being the last man back, they were rather punctured by the tame way in which he defended Havertz's cross. A player with 650-plus career games knows to attack a cutback rather than let it roll across him for Leandro Trossard to tuck into the net.

Arsenal had their chances to win the game from their out, particularly as counter-attacking opportunities presented themselves when Gabriel Martinelli was introduced. The more purposeful, confident winger of last year would not have always needed an extra touch before firing between three United defenders and against Onana's left arm.

It wasn't much but it was more than Manchester United created. Some of that was down to the deficiencies of their side but plenty came down to those Arsenal players who went through the closing stages with composure, none more so than Saliba. As Garnacho charged towards his penalty area he stood firm, baiting the stepovers in the knowledge that they would offer the perfect instant to step forward and win possession back.

When Arsenal needed to gird themselves against pressure of their own making, they did so. From the 77th minute to the final whistle, United registered just one shot. Throughout the entire match, they allowed only four shots in their penalty area, all from the livewire Garnacho. They challenged the young Argentine to beat them, and when he couldn't United had nothing else to exploit. When the clock became their greatest weapon, David Raya sat on every cross. Jakub Kiwior and Jorginho entered the fray, just in case.

Their nerves were cracking, their possession play was wayward but when the stakes were as high as they have been in a generation, Arsenal got the job done. The title race will go to the final day. They may well discover in seven days time that they did not do quite enough to stay out in front of Manchester City but Mikel Arteta's men will at least make the champions win it again.

Manchester United problems have lasted ‘too long’ – David Beckham

Manchester United problems have lasted ‘too long’ – David Beckham

David Beckham believes Manchester United ’s problems have gone on for “too long” since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

United have not won the Premier League title since Ferguson’s final season in charge and the club’s most recent Champions League victory came in 2008.

The club’s one trophy since 2017 was last year’s League Cup trophy and this season, United are at risk of finishing below seventh in the Premier League — which would be their lowest league finish since 1990.

Speaking exclusively to The Athletic ’s Manchester United podcast, Talk of the Devils , Beckham — a lifelong fan of United who scored 85 goals in 394 appearances for the club, winning 12 trophies including five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 1999 — spoke of the difficulties of the past decade.

“I think it has been a difficult time over the last five or ten years, but it was always going to be when the boss left the club,” Beckham said.

“It wasn’t just that, we lost players like Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane and Gary Neville, all of these players that had been at United for so long; you lose part of that and you lose part of the club.

“So it was always going to be a difficult time. But we’d like it to change pretty quickly because I think it’s gone on for too long now.”

Beckham was speaking at the premiere of 99, the Amazon Prime documentary covering United’s iconic treble-winning season of 25 years ago.
