Through embracing traditional country alongside soul-tinged pop, singer/songwriter Josh Rouse has found critical acclaim with his emotive songs with lyrics of self-reflection and everyday observation.

Born in Nebraska, US, Rouse was frequently on the move throughout his childhood, spending time in other US states including South Dakota, Georgia, California, Utah and Arizona. With tis constant upheaval, Rouse found stability in music as he grew up, becoming a fan of the Smiths and the Cure. It was his uncle that provided Rouse with his first musical education, teaching to play guitar. In his late teens, Rouse was writing his own material, displaying potential that landed him with a recording contract with Rykodisc subsidiary, Slow River.

In 1998, Rouse released his debut album, “Dressed Up Like Nebraska,” which paid tribute to his birthplace, finding critical acclaim with this initial release. Rouse soon was on the road again, travelling to Nashville, US, where he based himself as an artist. A friendship with Kurt Wagner soon developed, with the pair collaborating on the EP, “Chester,” in 1999. Two further solo releases followed with “Home” and then “Under Cold Blue Stars” in 2002.

Rouse teamed up with producer Brad Jones for his fourth release, “1972,” a record that reflected upon the soft rock sounds of his youth, offering a mature album that was wider in its sonic scope. After the breakdown of his marriage in 2005, Rouse recorded the album “Nashville,” a farewell to his adopted home, with the artist moving to Spain shortly after. The record was Rouse’s most poignant release to date, full of personal lyrics that reflected upon his past.

Jones flew out to Spain to meet Rouse, who was living in a small seaside town, with the pair eventually producing 2006’s intimate “Subtitulo.” Several EPs followed before another full-length arrived, which came in the shape of 2007’s “Country Mouse City House.” Rouse’s next effort, 2010’s “El Turista,” captured his relocation to Spain, with some songs also sung in Spanish, although interestingly the album was actually recorded in Nashville.

Rouse continued to incorporate Spanish influences into his music, on display on 2011’s “Josh Rouse & the Long Vacations.” Yet with 2013’s “The Happiness Waltz,” Rouse returned to his earlier country-based sound. Following two years of battling depression, Rouse returned to triumphant form with 2015’s “The Embers of Time,” a light-hearted account of his life in Spain and the experiences this offered.

Live reviews

Wow! Talk about liking something you never thought you would! My husband took me to see Josh Rouse Live for our anniversary last year and I was amazed at how much I enjoyed myself. Maybe it's my stubborn ways or what, but I truly did not expect to enjoy his music like I did.

I think what is so appealing to me is how different it is from anything I've listened to before. It was like a mix between country, folk and oldies and a little bit of something unique and his own. Something unlike I have heard before and I really found myself wondering how he comes up with the music. It was such a calm, peaceful and relaxing atmosphere that I was able to comfortably contemplate this.

It was a very romantic and simple setting; good for a date, anniversary or anything where you want to have fun but don't want to deal with the obnoxious fangirls and crowds you might find at a typical rock concert. At some point, we grow out of that phase and need a different way to have fun. This venue allowed the crowd to enjoy themselves as mature adults in a mature way. The music was truly beautiful. I'm so glad I let my guard down and allowed myself to enjoy this show. Would recommend. 10/10.

I have now seen Josh 4 times, and he has never failed to deliver a very entertaining and personal show. This was the first time at the relatively new 04 Center, and I thought the combination of Josh and the great venue worked perfectly. Josh's encouragement to sing along is always fun.

I will always try to catch him when he comes to Austin.

Third time I’ve seen him and by far the best. Small venue great atmosphere. Played electric guitar on every song. Band were great as well. Played most of his best stuff and a good cover of this charming man . Plus a snippets of come together and a lot of love by the Beatles and Neil Young respectively. Best£17.50 I’ve spent in s long time

Amazing show! Always great to see him. He performed with a trio this time around (opposed to solo) which as nice to hear all the funky baselines. He played a few new ones, but mostly the best from his early albums. He even took a few requests from the crowd. One of the best singer/songwriters of all time!

moped’s profile image

With just a guitar and amp and a couple of pedals Josh put on a fantastic show for nearly an hour and a half last night. What a charming performer! Chatting and interacting with the audience encouraging singalongs and asking for requests one of the best and most intimate shows I’ve seen in many a year.

Great gig with super enthusiastic crowd. I think Josh was a bit tired of touring (think this was the last date of a long tour) but he and the band lifted by the crowd delivered a great set. Venue was good - nice makeover of the basement space.

Come back soon Josh

Review: Josh Rouse Goes Places in New Album ‘Going Places’

by Lee Zimmerman August 26, 2022, 8:00 am

Videos by American Songwriter

Going Places

4 out of 5 stars

Like so many artists seemingly stifled by the pandemic, Josh Rouse found himself going stir-crazy due to the shutdown. Having spent a good deal of time holed up in Spain, he took the opportunity to record a new album with the sole intention of giving himself some new material to perform at a nearby’50s-style American bar that happened to be owned by members of his Spanish band.

The result, the hopefully titled Going Places , shares an intimate yet ebullient feel, a sound that reflects the casual pace and sunny vibes of the country he now calls home. At the same time, it also manages to maintain the perky pop sound Rouse has infused in his M.O. over the span of the last two decades. As a set of songs made to be performed live, it’s obviously energetic, meant to emit a good-time vibe that’s worthy of an eager audience. Given its modest additives—guitars, keyboards, and a hint of horns to flesh out the arrangements—it finds songs such as “Apple of My Eye,” “Stick Around,” “City Dog,” and “Henry Miller’s Flat” sharing an easy-going attitude along with a carefree caress that pulls the listener with a fanciful finesse.

josh rouse tour cancelled

Likewise, when Rouse opts to share a tender touch, as with the breezy “Waiting on the Blue,” he conveys a mood of quiet contentment that serves to brighten the mood even in the midst of these troubling times. The same could be said of “There’s Somebody Whose Job It Is,” another song that manages to share a similar sense of upbeat optimism.

The tone is consistent throughout, a sound so giddy and engaging, that it can easily break down barriers in order to allow for a communal embrace. Going Places provides a shared sense of solace when it’s needed the most. The quiet contemplative “Indian Summer” may be the sole exception, but its soothing strains provide a welcome respite regardless. Taken in tandem, there’s a charming quality attached to this music that’s absolutely undeniable.

Rouse Goes Back to “1972”

By Christina Saraceno

Christina Saraceno

Singer-songwriter Josh Rouse’s fourth album 1972 is, as one might expect from the title, rooted in Rouse’s love of that era’s musical offerings. But don’t expect kitschy references to Seventies pop culture or flat out mimicry of the decade’s biggest artists. “I’m not trying to sound like Neil Young at one moment or the Rolling Stones the next,” Rouse says. “But this is what I was listening and that’s what I was referencing.”

It’s an interesting move for Rouse, whose early work already reflected a Seventies influence, combining folk and alt-country with leanings towards punk and new wave. But last year’s Under the Cold Blue Stars moved in a slightly more soulful direction, with the title track showing off Rouse’s ability to create rhythmic, groove-oriented rock. With 1972 , Rouse has fully immersed himself in the decade and emerged a little more exposed, his humor and influences on his sleeve, and with an album that you could dance or at least shake your hips to.

“To be honest, when people go see shows they kind of just stand there and it can get tiresome,” Rouse says. “From touring so much, we tend to make more up-tempo sets so I thought, why not make people want to move a little bit. Let’s do a record that can go out and the crowd feels good the whole time.”

While musically, his inspiration dates back a few decades, his lyrical influences were contemporary. A big fan of Wes Anderson, Rouse found himself watching the director’s films ( Bottle Rocket , Rushmore , The Royal Tenenbaums ) with particular attention to the level of detail visually, the nuanced creation of characters and the subtle, wry humor. All of these things had always been present in Rouse’s work, though his stories are becoming more explicit. Under the Cold Blue Stars was a narrative album about the married life of a couple in the Fifties. And Rouse has always had a sharp wit, slightly obscured by the moody earnestness of folk and new wave. But with a better groove and bouncier beats, Rouse’s irony shines through. He used the pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant random encounters of touring to let his inner storyteller out.

“James” is an ode to the devoted patron of a karaoke bar in Atlanta. “I was doing Michael McDonald on karaoke,” Rouse admits “and someone got me a beer I didn’t want, so I gave it to this guy that was sitting there and he just thought that was too nice. He looked like the type of guy who just sat in there all day and drank and he’d been doing it for a long time. He never told me too much but it was enough for a song.

'MaXXXine' Brings Back Old-School Porn and Horror, 1980s Style

Bob dylan's stunning 'outlaw' tour set list: a song by song guide, jeff goldblum sends a message to ‘jurassic world 4’ star scarlett johansson: 'don’t get eaten', jennifer lopez celebrates three years of breakup song 'cambia el paso' before wedding anniversary.

“My intention was to do a record that had a great groove with songs that had interesting lyrics and were about something and I’m pleased with the way it turned out.”

Rouse will begin a U.S. tour behind 1972 in early October, with fellow singer-songwriter Leona Naess opening.

Josh Rouse Mixes Folk, Americana and Pop on Relaxed Affair ‘Going Places’ (ALBUM REVIEW)

  • By John Moore

Across more than a dozen albums going back to 1998, Josh Rouse has managed to cobble together a satisfying blend of folk and Americana with strong pop elements. His latest though, Going Places , still uses that established musical template as a starting point, but is much more relaxed affair.

Written when he was forced off the road due to the pandemic, he retreated with his family to Spain with plenty of time on his hands. Missing out on performing, he pulled together his Spanish band and started playing regularly in a friend’s bar. The result of that relaxed vibe, with little expectations and no specific time limitations can be heard all over the record, especially on songs like “Henry Miller’s Flat” and “Waiting on the Blue,” which sound like they were crafted specifically for live audience singalongs.

Rouse explained the process recently, “A year later, after things opened up a bit, I said ‘Why don’t we just go in and I’ll produce it, and let’s just record these songs and see what happens?’ And that’s what the Going Places record is- stuff that just felt good to play to a live audience.”

“Waiting on the Blue,” an autobiographical song about visiting a friend in New Orleans, as well as the tornados that hit Nashville just before the start of the global pandemic, is one of Rouse’s strongest songs lyrically here, managing to take a very personal experience and make it universal. The album closer, “Stick Around,” is a an addictively catchy singalong reminiscent of Paul Simon at his most chill and caps the record perfectly.

The album isn’t completely devoid of flash and flourishes though, as horns punctuate songs like “There’s Somebody Whose Job It Is,” “The Apple of My Eye,” “Hollow Moon” and “Stick Around.” The mix of songs that sound like they’re being written on the spot sitting on a stool in a bar, with tracks that are a bit more polished and contain several musical layers makes for a compelling listen.

Josh  Rouse

“Like a baseball player who quietly hits 30 home runs every year or a golfer who regularly finishes in the Top Ten,  Josh Rouse ‘s continued streak of excellence is easy to ignore and maybe even downplay a little” — Tim Sendra, Allmusic.com

Rouse’s songs  present themselves to you with an open heart, an innate intelligence and an absolute lack of pretension. They are clear-eyed, empathetic and penetrating. Without pandering, they seek to satisfy both your ear and your understanding.

Josh Rouse was born in Nebraska, and following an itinerant upbringing he eventually landed in Nashville where he recorded his debut  Dressed Like Nebraska  (1998).  The album’s acclaim led to tours with Aimee Mann, Mark Eitzel and the late Vic Chestnut. The follow up- Home (2000)—yielded the song “Directions” which Cameron Crowe used in his film Vanilla Sky.

“Every time I’ve made a record, I’ve tried to make it different from the last one,” says Rouse. “I always became fascinated by a different style of music. But at the end of the day, no matter how eclectic I try to make it, it’s my voice and melodic sensibility that tie things together.”

For his breakthrough album,  1972  (2003), Rouse decided to cheer up a bit. Noting that he’d earned a reputation for melancholy, he says, with a laugh, “I figured this is my career, I might as well try to enjoy it.” While the Seventies are often identified with singer-songwriters, Rouse was primarily attracted to the warmer sound of albums back then, as well as the more communal feel of the soul music of that time.  The follow up,   Nashville  (2005) continued the hot streak and expanded his audience further.

After relocating to  Valencia, Spain with his wife Paz, Rouse has released a steady stream of high quality songs and albums.  Subtitulo  (2006) contained the international indie folk hit “Quiet Town”. On  El Turista  (2010) he even experimented with writing and singing some  songs in Spanish. In  2014, he won a Goya Award (the Spanish equivalent of an Oscar) for best song for “Do You Really Want To Be In Love,” from the film ‘La Gran Familia Española.’

The Embers of Time,  was one of his strongest—self-described as “my surreal, ex-pat, therapy record.”  He followed that up with Love In the Modern Age , which took its musical inspiration from the thinking man’s pop of the eighties: The Blue Nile, Prefab Sprout and the Style Council. And in 2019 he tackled the Christmas album on The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse but instead of well-worn carols or classics, he wrote an entire record of original holiday themed pop songs.

‘Vetiver’s music is subtle and slow-burning, destined for a more discerning alternative following’ – Folk Radio

Vetiver is an American folk band formed in San Francisco in the early noughties headed by songwriter Andy Cabic.

Cabic’s music is nuanced and sensitive, with no glitz or grandstanding needed in order for it to be heard.

A longtime collaborator of Devendra Banhart , with whom he launched the the independent label Gnomonsong Recordings, he was also a member of the experimental electronic band Tussle , and as Vetiver, has toured with Vashti Bunyan, Joanna Newson, Fleet Foxes, Wilco,  Banhart and many others.

In 2011, Cabic appeared on former Cardinals guitarist Neal Casal ‘s studio album, Sweeten the Distance and co-produced Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion album Bright Examples with Thom Monahan

Vetiver released their self-titled debut album in 2004 on indie folk label DiChristina, with follow up ‘To Find Me Gone’ in 2006. They released a covers album ‘A Thing of the Past’ on Gnomonsong. Subpop(US) and Bella Union(UK) have released Vetiver’s ‘Tight Knit’ (2009), ‘The Errant Charm’ (2011) and Complete Strangers (2015)

Dear Melting Vinyl supporters,

At present we are in the process of finding out what the effect of the UK Government’s latest advice to the public to avoid contact in social spaces means in terms of our upcoming events.

It may mean some shows planned for the near future could be postponed to a later date in order to safeguard our local community.

About Lantern Hall

  • Getting Here

With Brill Building wit and a Midwestern sense of melancholy, singer-songwriter Josh Rouse has built a career that reaches back to his acclaimed 1998 debut, utilising well-crafted and hook-laden tracks coupled with closely-detailed, well-observed vignettes in his lyrics.

In honor of its 20th Anniversary, Yep Roc Records is proud to be reissuing Rouse’s 2003 breakthrough album, 1972. Filled to the brim with fan favourites such as ‘Love Vibration’, ‘James’ and ‘Rise’ – all of which have since become staples of his live shows –   1972 is a collection of songs that pay homage to the songwriters whose songs were popular on AM radio in the year Josh was born, complete with fluttering strings, hand claps and flutes.
