The Park Güell Tour

The vibrant colors, mystical style, and eclectic artistry make Gaudi’s work truly exceptional. Park Güell is sprawled out like its own private island in the city. Its elevation and height offer dazzling views of the Mediterranean Sea.  This park combines the beauty of Gaudi’s work and the tranquility of a green park all rolled into one magnificent place.  When it was constructed between 1900-1914 by the most famous contemporary architect Antoni Guadí, the park was on the northern end of Barcelona.

Guadi Park

As you enter the park, you will pass the colorful pavilion with its naturally round forms and the typically tiled and shaped roof. Following the stairs, you will reach the multicolored mosaic dragon fountain, which is one of the main icons of Park Güell. Above, marvel at the large main terrace, which extends from the mountain almost to the entrance.  In just a few more steps, you will enter the wide terrace of Park Güell. The serpentine-shaped benches invite visitors for a rest and a moment to appreciate the magical scenery.  Gaze at the city’s quarters of Gracia and Eixample up to the sea and the mountain of Montjuic in the background. After the tour, you have free time to discover the park on your own.

Gaudí Morning Tour – Casa Battlo & Sagrada Familia

Delight in Barcelona’s architectural hot spots on one guided tour. Explore Antoni Gaudí’s heritage in Barcelona and beyond with an expert guide and zero queues.    Unlock the key to what makes these buildings extraordinary. The details, the symbols, the structural secrets, and the technical innovation are all covered in the guided tour of Casa Batiló and the Sagrada Familia.    Gaudí’s masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia, is the last part of the tour, offering you the chance to explore as long as you wish. Return in the coach to the city center or continue “The Montjuic & Panoramic Tour.”   Itinerary: Passeig de Gràcia > Gaudí Houses (Casa Batlló and Façade of La Pedrera) > Eixample > Sagrada Família. Includes entry to Casa Batlló (worth €23.50) and Sagrada Família (worth €15.00).   Passeig de Grácia   This is one of the most important avenues not only in Barcelona but in Catalonia as well. This iconic street links Plaça Cataluña and the district of Gracia.    As you stroll down this street, you will find plenty of luxury shops and architectural details dating from the XIX century Barcelonian bourgeoisie. Amongst these fine elements of the street are beautiful works of Guadí. Casa Batiló and Casa Milà (La Pedrera) are timeless works that are enchanting to the eye.

All Barcelona Highlights Tour 8res 1

Casa Batiló Guided Tour    Casa Batiló is not just a building, but also an artistic legend; a calm sea is reflected by an outstanding façade. Opening the curtain of this façade reveals a world of architectural details and other attractive elements. The apartment building enchants visitors with its remarkable design and the vast repertoire of visual solutions employed. In every corner with the support of your guide, you will discover something surprising. Each detail is fascinating and imaginative.    The tour includes a visit to the legendary Noble Floor (it used to be the home of the Batlló family), the Attic (it was used by the residents as a store and laundry room), and the Rooftops and Chimneys.    The Chimneys present the well-known spine of the multi-colored dragon killed by St Georges. Revel in the magnificent lobby, main staircase, and light well (it used to be the main staircase for the rest of the neighbors). The experience replicates how you would feel walking through a fairytale.    The Magical World of Casa Batlló will stir your imagination with the metaphors and representation of nature, in particular the sea, which will inspire you and stimulate your senses and emotions.  An explosion of colours and forms as well as the splendid examples of the decorative arts of the epoch show how dedicated Gaudí was to his craft. An immersion in modernity, enigmatic forms, the interpretation of a dream, a Mediterranean marvel, a place of innovation and new concepts, this structure is a place for reflecting on the capabilities of art and design.  Casa Batlló is all this and more. It is no surprise that UNESCO declared Casa Batlló a World Heritage site in 2005.

Sagrada Familia 3746024 960 720

The jewel in the crown of Gaudí’s works, the temple is a synthesis of his overall conception of architecture. The richness of detail and its significance need explaining to appreciate this fascinating and extraordinary building in full.   Gaudí wanted the temple to be financed voluntarily by the people, not by taxes or funding, and that’s just what your entrance fees do (included in our tour price): finance the completion of this triumph in architecture, which he began building in 1882.   Although you may find it hard to imagine anything more beautiful than you have seen, your mind is about to be blown. The Sagrada Familia is on another level; viewing it for the first time is an experience you will never forget.  Be delighted by the infinite elements of the building and museum and compare the contrasting styles of the Birth and Passion façades. This tour saves the best for last and the Sagrada Familia is just as significant as it is striking.   Duration: Departure 9:00 am – Return 12:30h   Operating: Every day   Prices:   Adults: 79,00€   Children (3-12 years): 39,00€

General Tips, Recommendations, and Advice

While Barcelona has a warm, balmy climate it is still adjacent to the sea, which means weather can sometimes be unpredictable. When it does rain, it rains in full tropical style. Although it is unlikely, we recommend having a layer or two just in case. If it is the summer, you have much less to worry about.

If you are doing a tour that includes Montserrat Mountain, definitely bring layers regardless of the season. The weather on the mountain tends to change swiftly.

Wear sunscreen! The sun in Barcelona is strong. Even if you are enjoying a lovely sea breeze, the sun can still burn your skin. It is best to be cautious and not battle a painful sunburn!

Beautiful Barcelona

Wear comfortable shoes. Barcelona is an old city full of charming cobblestone streets and lovely historic districts. Comfortable shoes are essential for the walking tours offered on this list. On the Montserrat tour, you will be walking on a mountain. Sneakers are a great choice.

Make a “must-see” list for your trip. This list will help you navigate our article, as many tours are offered and it can be hard to narrow down which ones you are most interested in.

In addition to your “must-see” list, try to have an open mind for tours and landmarks that weren’t on your radar. Sometimes the most memorable experiences happen out of spontaneity and an open mind.

Did you know?

One fun fact about Barcelona City Tours is that they often include visits to the “Superblocks.” These are innovative urban planning projects aimed at creating pedestrian-friendly zones within the city. In these areas, several city blocks are interconnected, and traffic is restricted to the perimeter, making the interior streets car-free or significantly reduced in traffic. Superblocks are designed to prioritize the well-being of residents and visitors by providing green spaces, playgrounds, outdoor seating, and cultural activities in the heart of the city. They promote a sense of community, reduce pollution, and contribute to a more sustainable and enjoyable urban environment. Exploring these Superblocks on a city tour allows you to witness Barcelona’s commitment to innovative urban planning and sustainability while enjoying a unique urban experience within the bustling city. It’s a testament to Barcelona’s progressive approach to urban design and livability.

We hope that you have gained valuable insight from this article. Acquiring knowledge about the city you are traveling to ensures that you fully enjoy the experience.

Hop on and off at countless bus stations as you please. You will get to know the sights of Barcelona while you relax and enjoy the sun.

The double-decker Bus Turístic and Gray Line buses are some of the most comfortable and, in our opinion, a very nice way to see the city.

We recommend getting an overview of the city at the beginning of your stay. The double-decker buses are perfect for this.

How to use the Hop-on Hop-off buses?

Book the ticket here, print out the voucher or show it on your smartphone and you will receive the ticket on each of the buses.

You can easily hop on and off at any station. It is best to take a stop near your hotel, for example. The stops are located near the main attractions. On our sights pages we have always indicated the nearest Bus Turístic station.

You can also switch between lines at several stops, for example between the East and West routes.

In the bus you will receive a route plan and, if you wish, earphones for the audio guide. But you can also plug in your own headphones. The announcement tells you interesting things about the parts of the city you are driving through and about the sights where you are about to stop.

If you're particularly interested in a sight, simply disembark for a sightseeing tour. Or for a visit to a restaurant or a short walk. The buses run every 20-30 minutes and you can then simply get back on to continue your journey.

Which bus should I book?

Both bus operators offer almost identical services. The buses are clean and in perfect technical condition. Both buses take you to almost all sights. The prices for the 1 or 2-day tickets are the same and both offer earphones, a route plan with marked sights and bus stops.

Only the Bus Turístic stops at the " Telefèric de Montjuïc " station. If you want to take the cable car up the mountain and enjoy a great view - which we strongly recommend - then the Bus Turístic is a better choice. If you don't want to go up Montjuïc, you can skip this trip and the red Grayline bus is our recommendation.

Brief estimate of the time required: With a 1-day ticket you can travel through both lines once. You then have good time to look at 2-3 sights in peace. It's more relaxed with the 2-day ticket. Here we recommend driving one line on one day and getting off there at the sights and the other route on the second day. Note: the 2-day tickets are valid for two consecutive calendar days.

Hop-on hop-off in winter and midsummer?

Both buses have two floors. The lower one is closed and there is no wind and it is also heated in winter if it is cold outside. Appropriately air-conditioned in midsummer. If you prefer to sit upstairs: if it's too hot or it's raining, the roof closes from the back so you can sit in the shade. The buses are therefore suitable for use all year round.

When is the Bus Turístic Ticket worthwhile?

The Bus Turístic is ideal for getting a quick overview. You will pass almost all of the main attractions of the city of Barcelona with the hop-on hop-off buses. With the overview you have gained, you can then plan the next few days and visit specific sights, e.g. with the Barcelona Card.

You can get on and off the train as often as you like at the stations. During the journey you can listen to the explanations of the audio guide and learn interesting information, on the upper deck of the buses you can enjoy the sun and lots of fresh air.

city tour bus in barcelona

Spanish city overrun by predictable tourists who arrive and ‘visit all the same spots'

O ne of Spain's most popular cities has become overrun by tourists who have been slammed for "visiting all the same spots" making them a nightmare to navigate. Barcelona in Catalonia sees about 32 million tourists each year which smothers the 1.6 million who call the city home with the words "tourist go home" scrawled on the walls of some of its most popular locations.

Responsible Travel, an activist travel company which urges tourists to be mindful of their surroundings while on holiday, says overtourism in Barcelona is a "relatively new phenomenon.

It says the 1992 Olympic Games put the city on the map for travellers with tourist numbers increasing rapidly each year leading to Barcelona's port being named the most polluted in Europe in 2019 due to the high number of cruise ships.

The group said the main issue with tourism in Barcelona was not the numbers but the fact that most of them all turned up at once during the summer months and often visiting for only a day.

Tourism expert Dr Harold Goodwin, in his 2016 paper on managing tourism in the city, described the arrival of visitors as like "a tidal wave" when "there are as many as 35,000 people arriving on foot at the Mirador de Colon, to walk up La Rambla" before getting on ships and moving on.

Responsible Tourism says little money is spent outside of tourist bars and cafes with local residents hardly benefitting from travel to the city.

It said "congestion is unpleasant for both residents and other tourists" but added that the high tourism rate had resulted in an influx of buildings becoming legal and illegal hotels leaving locals with little accommodation of their own.

In 2017, it was reported that there were 125,000 legally registered beds in hotels and tourist apartments and 50,000 illegal beds.

High demand for tourist accommodation, coupled with the opportunity to rent out rooms and apartments via sites such as Airbnb, has caused rents to soar and residents are struggling to afford the increases.

Mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau says overtourism is "affecting not only residents' quality of life but their very ability to live in the area".

Although tourism brings substantial revenue into the city, currently comprising around 12 percent of Barcelona's economy, the city has seen "poor redistribution of the wealth generated and poor quality jobs" a 2015 consultation found.

As a result, Catalans have staged a number of protests over the years with signs around the city abusing tourists.

In July 2017, masked protesters attacked a tour bus, slashing the tyres and scrawling the words 'El Turisme Mata Els Barris' meaning 'Tourism Kills Neighbourhoods' on the windscreen.

Tourist bikes have also had their tyres punctured and the streets and plazas have been filled with placard-heavy marches and rallies.

However many of the protesters see their battle as being with the authorities rather than tourists themselves, blaming them for a lack of regulation.

Measures to curb overtourism in busy areas have now been introduced from segregating tourists and residents to tightly controlling visitor numbers.

The local government is not currently issuing any new licences for tourist accommodation and new regulations have been introduced to reduce the number of short-term private lets , which would effectively prevent these from being used by tourists.

Entradas a 22 euros
