READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE OPERATING APPLIANCE

Any appliance is electrically live even when the switch is off. To reduce the risk of death by electric shock:

  • Always unplug appliance immediately after using.
  • Do not place or store appliance where it can fall or be pulled into a tub or sink.
  • Do not place in, or drop into water or other liquid.
  • If an appliance falls into water, unplug it immediately. Do not reach into the water

To reduce the risk of burns, electrocution, fire, or injury to persons:

  • This appliance should never be left unattended when plugged in.
  • Close supervision is necessary when this appliance is used by, on, or near children or the physically challenged. Unsupervised use could result in fire or personal injury.
  • Use this appliance only for its intended use as described in this manual. Do not use attachments not recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Never operate this appliance if it has a damaged cord or plug, if it is not working properly, or if it has been dropped or damaged, or dropped into water. Do not attempt to repair the appliance. Incorrect reassembly or repair could cause a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons when the appliance is used. Return the appliance to an authorized service center for examination and repair.
  • Keep the cord away from heated surfaces. Do not allow cord to contact heated surfaces. Do not pull or twist cord. Let appliance cool completely before putting away. Loop cord loosely around appliance when storing.
  • This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). As a safety feature, this plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to defeat this safety feature.
  • Never drop or insert any object into any opening.
  • Do not use outdoors or operate where aerosol (spray) products are being used or where oxygen is being administered.
  • Do not use an extension cord to operate appliance.
  • Surfaces of this appliance may be hot when in use. Do not let heated surfaces touch eyes or bare skin.

  • Unplug this appliance before filling or emptying. Do not overfill.
  • While emitting steam, this appliance may cause burns if it is used too close to the skin, scalp or eyes, or if it is used incorrectly. To reduce the risk of contact with hot water coming from steam vents, test appliance before each use by holding it away from body.
  • Do not operate steamer without properly filling the water container.
  • Never yank cord to disconnect from outlet; instead, grasp plug and pull to disconnect.
  • Burns could occur from touching hot parts hot water, or steam. Use care when you turn a steam appliance upside down – there may be hot water in reservoir.
  • To reduce likelihood of circuit overload, do not operate another high wattage appliance on the same circuit.
  • When installing or removing attachment, please be sure the unit is off and no steam is being released to avoid contact with hot water.
  • Use caution when installing or removing attachment as it may contain hot water from condensation. Ensure the attachment is dry or cooled off to avoid contact with hot water.

DUAL VOLTAGE

This is a 120/240V dual voltage appliance and may be used in the United States and abroad without an electricity converter.

  • An adapter plug may be necessary when using this appliance in some foreign countries.
  • If so, plug the steamer into correct adapter plug for your location and plug assembly into electrical outlet.

NOTE: This unit is thermostatically protected to shut off when water has boiled away. You should unplug the unit before this occurs because surfaces continue to heat, which could be hazardous and may damage unit. Before using the garment steamer for the first time, it is recommended to operate the steamer for approximately 5 minutes, unplug the unit and allow it to cool. Empty container and refill before actually using.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

  • Be sure garment steamer is unplugged.
  • Release handle by pushing red button.
  • While holding main body of steamer, twist steamer head counterclockwise and lift it to remove.
  • Fill reservoir with ordinary tap water to max fill line. DO NOT OVERFILL.
  • Replace steamer head on steamer body, twisting clockwise into locked position.
  • If steam is spitting or dripping, this indicates that there may be too much water in the unit. For the best performance, we strongly recommend filling the reservoir with less water.
  • Attach brush accessory to steamer if desired. (Please refer to brush attachment section)
  • Place appliance on a flat surface in an upright position. Plug into electrical outlet.
  • Within a few minutes, the unit will begin to emit a continuous flow of steam from the steam vents. The garment steamer is now ready to use.
  • Hold steamer by its handle when using. Do not grasp body of unit while steaming garments or while unit is hot.
  • Direct the flow of steam toward garment to remove wrinkles. Do not touch fabric with steam head. Steamer can be used in either a horizontal or vertical position. However, do not tilt steamer upward as hot water may leak.

BRUSH ATTACHMENT

Your garment steamer includes a brush attachment for extra grooming and care of all your clothes. The brush helps the steam penetrate the fabric by separating the fibers. You can use the steamer to effectively remove wrinkles with or without using the brush attachment. Do not attempt to attach or remove the brush attachment while unit is steaming or hot. Wait until unit is completely cool. Place the brush onto the steamer head by simply pushing the brush onto the front of the steamer head. The wider portion of the brush attachment should be toward the bottom of the unit.

TO STEAM GARMENTS OR DRAPES

  • Hang up garment/drapery.
  • Gently hold fabric taut with one hand and hold steamer with the other hand. Hold steamer near the garment/drapery so that steam is directed toward it. Use only in vertical position.
  • Slowly run the steam head up and down and side to side. To remove stubborn wrinkles,

move the garment steamer very slowly.

TO MAKE CREASES OR PLEATS

  • Hang garment.
  • Fold fabric where crease or pleat is desired. Hold fold in place while applying steam directly to fold.

TO STEAM TIES

  • Hang tie on hanger.
  • Apply steam directly to tie.

TO STEAM SHOULDERS AND SLEEVES

  • Hang garment, preferably on a padded hanger.
  • Fill out shoulders or sleeves with folded towel.
  • Apply steam to garment.

The Best Travel Steamers to Take on the Road, Tested and Reviewed

Even the most seasoned travelers open their suitcase after landing and find themselves with a daunting task ahead: deciding if their wrinkled clothes can get by with a thorough shake out or if reinforcements are needed. Of course, most hotel rooms are equipped with irons, but the task of setting up the ironing board and fitting each article of clothing just right can feel overwhelming. Not to mention, some pieces are too delicate for harsh heat. But is it easy to travel with a clothing steamer instead?

When I set out to find the best travel steamer a few years ago, I admit, I was hesitant about such a practical item taking up precious carry-on space. But when traveling as a family of four, as I often do, an ironing board set-up can quickly become a catch-all for toys, shopping bags, or electronics and simply gets in the way. Since I began testing these steamers, it’s rare I leave home without one.

Of the 13 steamers I've tested, my favorite models have one thing in common: a metal soleplate, allowing you to touch the steamer to the clothing to smooth out tricky spots. While steamers are mostly celebrated for their ability to get the wrinkles out, they also kill 99 percent of bacteria. Important to note, most steamers come with the recommendation of distilled water to keep the sediment buildup at bay, which I did not use as most of us don’t have easy access to it when we travel.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

My top picks:

Best overall steamer, best lightweight steamer, best long-lasting steamer, best foldable steamer, best steamer for international travel.

  • Most leakproof steamer

Best two-in-one steamer

How i tested:.

Each steamer has been tested on jeans, khakis, T-shirts , button-down shirts , linens, blouses, and jackets based on the following criteria:

  • Size/packability : Does it fit into a weekender or carry-on?
  • Power/efficiency: Is it faster and easier than setting up and using the hotel iron? Or at least just as good?
  • Water capacity: How many times do you have to refill the reservoir to steam an entire outfit?
  • Leakproof: Will you be late to dinner while waiting for the wet spots to dry?
  • Durability/longevity : Is the quality going to withstand enough trips to make the steamer worth packing and purchasing?

Can I travel with a portable steamer?

Most travel steamers will fit into a carry-on and can go through TSA without any issues; just make sure any remaining liquid from the reservoir has been emptied before getting to the airport.

Is a portable steamer worth it?

If you are going to a formal event or know you’re packing clothes that are famous for wrinkling, then yes, it's worth adding to your suitcase. A new perk I’ve recently come to love about steamers is I actually pack less clothing knowing I have a way to freshen up an item I want to rewear. This makes packing a simpler capsule wardrobe all the more possible. As someone who typically only uses a carry-on, I do value my space and find the steamer to be an easy item to remove should I be running short on room. Below, the six best travel steamers to pack on your next trip.

Image may contain: Appliance, Blow Dryer, Device, and Electrical Device

I have a new favorite steamer. While the Nesugar handheld steamer used to be my most-used, the Proctor Silex 2-in-1 compact garment steamer has moved into the top spot for me. It’s only seven ounces heavier than the Nesugar model and steams continuously for almost 10 minutes without needing to refill the reservoir. Plus, it works effectively on every type of garment—even jeans with stubborn wrinkles. Often we don’t know where or how many outlets our hotel or Airbnb will have, so the 10-foot cord on this steamer is much appreciated, as it allows you to move around comfortably. Surprisingly, this is also the most affordable steamer at $20. If you are someone who will only travel with a steamer for special occasions, this one is a safe choice.

Weight: 1.63 lbs. Water tank capacity : 4 oz. What I like most: Affordable, de-wrinkles all fabrics, heats up in 45 seconds, effective brush attachment Where there's room for improvement: Reservoir can be hard to completely empty

Image may contain: Appliance, Device, Electrical Device, and Blow Dryer

I've used this steamer regularly for over a year, and very much appreciate the smart design. The Nesugar portable steamer weighs less than a pound, but produces a solid stream of steam. With a small reservoir, I was surprised the water lasted for almost 10 minutes, allowing for five items to be de-wrinkled (though it was not powerful enough for jeans). There is a button to turn the steam on, but you don’t have to hold it down, which I like. The metal soleplate allows for an ironing option, which is what I ended up using to smooth out the jeans. An adjustable head not only makes the steamer compact, but gives you the option to steam at different angles. Originally, I wondered if frequent adjusting of the head would loosen the feature, but it is still going strong after countless trips. The unit also comes with a wall mount so you always have a place to hang it at home.

Weight: 12.8 oz. What I like most: Lightweight and packable, adjustable head, comes with a wall mount Where there's room for improvement: Works best on lighter fabrics

One of the more expensive steamers I tested, the Conair is definitely the winner in terms of power and functionality—a T-shirt can be good as new in less than a minute. While the steamer can blast wrinkles from jackets, you can also lower the setting for more delicate items. The Conair turbo is the only steamer I tested that had various settings to choose from. It even has a built-in creaser, if that’s your thing. Because the steamer is more powerful, it uses more water, so refills are necessary after a few items (depending on the fabric and intensity of the wrinkles, of course). The Conair Turbo would’ve taken the top spot if it were more compact for traveling (its dimensions are 13" x 8" x 6", making it a bit bulky for carry-ons). If you find yourself using an iron a lot at home, this steamer may actually be your best bet.

Weight: 3.2 lbs. Water tank capacity : 6.6 oz. What I like most: Can de-wrinkle anything, various settings to choose from, quick heat-up Where there's room for improvement: Hard to fill with its small opening, on the larger size for travel

travel smart steamer instructions

This is by far the most aesthetically pleasing steamer I tested and ranks number two for packability. With a 30-second warm up and automatic steam (no trigger to hold), the Seekclass was off to a good start, but it did take four minutes to steam one pair of pants and I had to utilize the metal soleplate in order to get the job done. The reservoir is tiny, so I had to refill it before I could finish the pants, too. Because the hole to refill is so small, it’s also hard to get out any remaining water when you’re ready to pack up the unit. Knowing this, it’s smart to let the steamer dry out at your earliest convenience to keep any build-up from forming.

Weight: 1.4 pounds Water tank capacity : 3.5 oz. What I like most: Its foldable handle is great for travel, metal soleplate, quick heat-up Where there's room for improvement: Leaks when on its side; has small, hard-to-fill reservoir; heavier material requires at least one refill

travel smart steamer instructions

International travelers will be happy about the automatic dual voltage with this steamer. While the heat up is quick (about 20 seconds), the reservoir of the steamer is painfully hot—so be sure to only hold on to the handle. Unfortunately, the high temperature of the reservoir requires a pause between fill-ups, but you can get three items done with one tank. My favorite feature is the automatic steam from the get-go, which means your fingers get a rest from holding down the trigger button that comes with many other steamers. The main reason this steamer remains on the final list is for its appeal to those who frequently travel abroad.

Weight: 1.2 lbs. Water tank capacity : 3.4 oz. What I like most: Dual voltage, collapsible handle for travel, automatic heat-up (no power button), no trigger needed to release steam Where there's room for improvement: Cannot promptly refill reservoir because the tank gets so hot

Most leakproof

Image may contain: Blade, Weapon, Appliance, Blow Dryer, Device, Electrical Device, and Razor

I tend to gravitate toward the hybrid steamers that can also be used as an iron. The large iron plate on the Steamery Cirrus 3 is almost as efficient as a full-size iron, but I could only steam three items with one tank of water. Something that stands out with this steamer is its ability to remain leak-free. This is one of the most important features for me as I tend to travel with a busy itinerary, which means I may be steaming in a hurry and the last thing I want to do is take out a hair dryer to dissolve the wet spots left behind by the steamer. I even gave it a bit of a shake test and nothing spilled. Where this steamer falls short, honestly, is the price.

Weight : 1.8 lbs. Water tank capacity : 3 oz. What I like most: Large iron plate, completely leakproof, quick heat-up Where there's room for improvement: Expensive price point, reservoir empties after three garments

Image may contain: Device, Electrical Device, Smoke Pipe, and Appliance

Rounding out our list of the best travel steamers is this hybrid steamer/iron that comes highly recommended by senior editor Megan Spurrell . “I was drawn to the Nori steamer because of its sleek design—two-in-ones are always ideal for travel, and not needing an ironing board seemed like a plus,” Spurrell says. “I put it to the test the day of my destination wedding this past month, on both my dress and my husband's linen suit. It did get the job done, and both functions (steaming and ironing) deliver.”

The unique, compact steamer features two aluminum plates that can simultaneously iron the front and back of a garment, getting the job done in half the time. Another perk: It offers six fabric settings (polyester, silk, wool, cotton, denim, and linen)—so no matter what you pack, you can rest assured it will be wrinkle-free and free of any damage when it's time to wear.

Weight : 1.4 lbs.  Water tank capacity : 1 oz.  What I like most: Double plates, dual voltage, automatic shut-off after 10 minutes of no movement Where there's room for improvement: Its tiny reservoir means it's best reserved for smaller jobs; it can be tiring to hold while smoothing out a very crinkled shirt.

Its compact size, dual voltage feature, and quick heating make it a great option for travelers. So why wait? Click here (Amazon link #CommissionsEarned) to purchase the Conair Power Steam Handheld Travel Garment Steamer and keep your clothes looking fresh and wrinkle-free on your next trip!

Conair Handheld Travel Garment Steamer Overview

Looking for a portable and efficient solution to your garment steaming needs? The Conair Power Steam Handheld Travel Garment Steamer might be just what you need. This compact steamer packs a punch with 1200 watts of power, making it capable of removing wrinkles from your clothes quickly and easily.

This is a huge upgrade from Conair’s previous model, a measly 400-watt garment steamer with a pretty ugly design…

conair travel fabric steamer

With a quick 35-second heat-up time, adjustable steam head, and easy-fill removable water tank, this garment steamer is a breeze. The Conair handheld travel steamer has earned the Good Housekeeping Seal and is part of a high-quality garment care accessories line.

Key Features

When choosing a garment steamer, you want to get one that can handle your needs. The Conair travel steamer is a great option for those who want powerful and portable steam. Here are some of the key features that make this steamer stand out:

Most dual-voltage travel steamers are less than 1000 watts in power. The Conair travel steamer packs a punch with 1200 watts of power. This high heat and high-velocity steam can quickly and easily remove wrinkles from all fabric types. The steamer is versatile, allowing you to steam in multiple positions for maximum effectiveness.

  • Dual Voltage

With just a simple switch, the power adapts automatically for worldwide usage. All you need is a wall plug for the country you are traveling to.

Quick Heat-Up Time

The Conair handheld travel steamer heats in 35 seconds. You can quickly and easily remove wrinkles from your clothes without wasting time.

Pros and Cons

Conair is a trusted name in steaming, but the complete steam travel steamer has a few flaws. Size and weight are the biggest two issues – at 10.47 inches x 6.14 inches x 4.13 inches, it is not the smallest travel steamer. It fits well in the base of a travel suitcase.

Also, at 1.7 pounds without water, it is heavier than other travel steamer options such as Nesugar.

Conair Travel Steamer Pros

  • Quality brand
  • 1200 watts of power
  • 35 second heat up
  • Flexible steamer head

Conair Travel Steamer Cons

  • Should use distilled water
  • Small water tank
  • The steam is both powerful and consistent
  • I put this in my carry-on with no problems
  • It was a lifesaver for the entire wedding party
  • I bought this for travel but use it at home, too
  • The only thing I would change is it needs an auto shut-off
  • Goes through the water reservoir quickly
  • It doesn’t work well on linen fabrics
  • The large steamer head makes it very top-heavy

Overall, the Conair Power Steam Handheld Travel Garment Steamer is a great option for anyone looking to keep their clothing and fabrics looking fresh on the go. Its compact size, dual voltage, and high power make it a versatile tool for travelers or home users. Just be aware of its limitations regarding water capacity and heavy fabrics.

How to Use the Conair Travel Steamer

To use the Conair travel steamer, simply follow these steps:

  • Grip the water tank by the bottom and pull it off the steamer.
  • Fill the water tank up to the fill line – only use distilled or demineralized water.
  • If you are outside the US or Canada – adjust the voltage on the bottom of the steamer before plugging it in or turning it on.
  • To adjust the steam head, press the round silver buttons on the sides to tilt it up or down. Get it into position before turning it on – otherwise, it will be hot!
  • Turn the steamer on by pressing the power button.
  • Wait for the steamer to heat up, which takes only 35 seconds.
  • Hold the steamer upright and gently press the steam button to release steam.
  • Move the steamer over your clothes back and forth, starting from the top and working your way down.
  • When you’re finished, turn off the steamer and empty any remaining water from the tank.

How to Fill Conair Travel Steamer

Filling the Conair Travel Steamer should be a simple and easy process, however, many users have complained about how difficult they have found this! Try these tips to make filling easier:

  • Pull the water tank off the steamer by grabbing the bottom section and pulling it outwards.
  • A small funnel can help pour distilled water into the top of the water tank.
  • Little bottles of CPAP water (Amazon link #CommissionsEarned) are handy for travel.
  • Be careful not to overfill the reservoir, and make sure the rubber cap is firmly in place before putting it back into the steamer.

Filling the Conair Travel Steamer is a straightforward process that should not cause any issues. Remember, though, you are only filling a tiny 8oz chamber, so pour slowly (or have a towel handy)!

How to Troubleshoot a Travel Steamer That’s Not Producing Steam

If your Conair travel steamer is not producing steam, there are a few things you can check before giving up on it. Here are some tips to help you troubleshoot the issue:

  • Check the water level: Make sure that there is enough water in the steamer. If the water level is low, the steamer may not produce steam.
  • Check the power source: Ensure the steamer is plugged into a working outlet. If the outlet is not working, try plugging the steamer into a different outlet.
  • Check that your voltage setting is correct before plugging in your steamer. If you turn it on with the wrong voltage set, you will likely blow up the steamer.
  • Check the steam nozzle: Make sure that the steam nozzle is not clogged with mineral deposits or lint. If it is, clean it with a cotton swab or a soft-bristled brush. Sometimes, a small pin can help too.
  • Check the temperature: If the steamer is not producing steam, it may not be hot enough. Allow the steamer to heat up for at least 35 seconds before use.

By following these troubleshooting tips, you should be able to get your Conair travel steamer producing steam again in no time.

What are the benefits of using a portable steamer over a traditional travel iron?

Portable steamers like the Conair Power Steam Handheld Travel Garment Steamer offer several advantages over traditional travel irons. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Faster and more efficient: Steamers heat up quickly and can remove wrinkles faster than irons.
  • Easier to use: Steamers do not require an ironing board or a flat surface to work on. You can use them to remove wrinkles from hanging clothes, curtains, and upholstery.

Conair Travel Smart Review

The Travel Smart garment steamer from Conair is a portable steam cleaning unit for use at both home away. It's been designed with mobility in mind and for individuals who want to keep their clothes looking great even if on holiday or a business trip. Conair are also renowned for producing some of the most durable and innovative products on the market.

Key Features

The Travel Smart steam cleaner offers users a way to clean and remove creases from garments just about anywhere, while the dual voltage system allows the unit to also be used worldwide; which makes it a wonderful travel companion. As you would expect from any portable machine, it's extremely lightweight and just the right size to handle effectively.

Once the unit has sufficiently heated-up and ready to go, users can then continuously steam garments for up to 10 minutes. This should be more than enough time to adequately freshen up and remove all creases from a number of garments. Due to its portability, the unit can steam garments in just about any angle allowing users access to tough to reach areas easily. There are two attachments also included with the unit, which are the bristle and lint brushes.

This handy portable garment steamer has been carefully designed to ensure usability, whilst also retaining much of the functionality from larger units. There are a number of positives and negatives that afflict all products and we'll be discussing what those points exactly are.

  • For it's size and design it manages to freshen and remove odours as well as iron a wide variety of clothes very effectively. Due to the unit outputting 400 watts, it heats up pretty quickly. Therefore, allowing users to commence the steaming of garments within around just 2 minutes.
  • Great care and thought has gone into how this product is stored. For example, when it's not in use or being packed away, the handle can further compact the unit by folding flat into the cavity of the steamer. Refilling the tank has also been designed with simplicity in mind. It's very easy to refill the water tank so that steaming can be continued relatively quickly and without much time wasted.
  • This steam cleaner also comes with its own vinyl case. This is an extremely vital piece of equipment as it allows the steamer to be packed away without the worry of excess water dripping onto the contents of the suitcase as well as protecting the unit.
  • Small size: 4.5 x 4.5 x 9 inches
  • Light weight at only 1 pound
  • Compact design
  • Automatic voltage switcher
  • Heats up within 2 minutes
  • Continuous steaming for 10 minutes
  • There are just a few cons to the Travel Smart, and they are really just some design flaws. As with most steam cleaning unit, users have to take care not to place hands or anything in the way of the jets of steam the machine outputs as this could potentially cause burns.
  • Sometimes just one fill of the water tank isn't enough to get everything done. This is where a major design problem arises. When refilling the water tank in this type of situation, the top of the unit does become a little hot and requires some sort of protection to remove the cap to refill.
  • Refill tank become hot after use
  • The cord is a little short
  • Steamer head isn't wide enough

Product Comparisons

Considering that it isn't designed to be as robust as some of the more pricey versions of garment steamers, it does manage to hold up pretty well in terms of results. Where the unit has been condensed compared to many other steam cleaners, it does obviously have some limitations. Although, when compared with other portable steam cleaning units such as the Samsonite, it does out-perform it in many aspects.

When compared, the Travel Smart heats up slightly faster and produces more stable and continuous steam even when the water tank is almost empty. Although, the Samsonite does benefit from being slightly smaller in size and also a little lighter, although those stats are negligible to say the least.

Care and Maintenance

Regular care and maintenance will be required to keep your steam cleaner at its best, especially if the product is used on a regular basis. Care should be taken on the head of the steamer, where dust and other particles can get caught within the bristles. If any debris is discovered on the bristles it needs to be removed. Always ensure the water tank is emptied after each use, and then allowed it to air dry.

Further care instructions are available from within the manual of the product. Following the care instructions will also ensure the longevity as well as maintaining the performance of the unit.

Should I Purchase it?

If you're looking for a handy little garment steamer that has been specifically designed with portability in mind, then this would be a great choice. It can be taken and used literally everywhere in the world thanks to its dual voltage function. For it's size and specifications, it does an extremely good job at steam cleaning.

Keeping everything simple for the user has been one of the key benefits of this product and great results can be produced very quickly and easily. Therefore, quick steaming of garments can be achieved with this product, so you can be ready to go in minutes.

Other redeeming features include the extremely affordable price tag, which makes this product especially enticing. The Travel Smart really lives up to its name. It's small, light and very powerful, while the dual voltage automatically shifts depending on what is required. Overall, a very solid choice for people looking for an effective and very compact steam cleaning unit that produces great results at both home and abroad.

Tested and reviewed: the best travel steamer to pack in your suitcase

By Erinne Magee

Tested and reviewed the best travel steamer to take on the road

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Even the most seasoned travellers open their suitcase after landing and find themselves with a daunting task ahead: deciding if their wrinkled clothes can get by with a thorough shake out or if reinforcements are needed.

Of course, most hotel rooms are equipped with irons, but the task of setting up the ironing board can feel overwhelming. Not to mention, some hotel irons aren't so trustworthy, while some fabrics are too delicate for harsh heat. Enter our swanky new friend, the travel steamer.

When I set out to find the best travel steamer, I admit, I was hesitant about such a practical item taking up precious carry-on space. But when travelling as a family of four, as I often do, an ironing board set-up can quickly become a catch-all for toys, shopping bags, or electronics and simply get in the way. After testing these steamers, I’ll be leaving the iron tucked away.

Of the 10 steamers tested, my favourite models had one thing in common: a metal soleplate, allowing you to touch the steamer to the clothing to smooth out tricky spots. While steamers are mostly celebrated for their ability to get wrinkles out, they also kill 99.9 per cent of bacteria. It's also important to note that most steamers come with the recommendation of distilled water to keep the sediment buildup at bay. I did not use this as most of us don’t have easy access to it when we travel.

Each steamer has been tested and reviewed on jeans, khakis, t-shirts, button-down shirts, blouses, and jackets based on the following criteria:

  • Size/packability : Does it fit into a weekender or carry-on ?
  • Power/efficiency: Is it faster and easier than setting up and using the hotel iron? Or at least just as good?
  • Water capacity: How many times do you have to refill the reservoir to steam an entire outfit?
  • Leakproof: Will you be late to dinner while waiting for the wet spots to dry?
  • Durability/longevity : Is the quality going to withstand enough trips to make the steamer worth packing and purchasing?

Which is the best travel steamer?

Below, our top four models to buy now.

travel smart steamer instructions

The design here is just smart. The steamer weighs less than 500 grams, but produces a solid stream of steam. With a small reservoir, I was surprised the water lasted for almost 10 minutes, allowing for five items to be de-wrinkled (though it was not powerful enough for jeans). There is a button to turn the steam on, but you don’t have to hold it down, which I appreciated. The metal soleplate allows for an ironing option, which is what I ended up using to smooth out the jeans. An adjustable head not only makes the seamer compact but gives you the option to steam at different angles. I did wonder if frequent adjusting of the head would loosen the feature, but the steamer seems to be quite solid and well-made. The unit also comes with a wall mount so you always have a place to hang the garment at home.

Weight: 0.3 kg

Size : 22.6 x 7.9 x 4.2cm

Pros: Lightweight and packable, adjustable head, Comes with wall mount, powerful

Cons: Works best on lighter fabrics only

Image may contain: Appliance, Blow Dryer, Device, and Electrical Device

This Tefal steamer comes in a very close second place and, if you’re looking for an inexpensive option, then it clinches the win – it’s nearly half the price of the model above. It’s a million times better than the cheap Amazon product I was using before, removing wrinkles in record time, with a swift 15 second heat-up time. It’s lightweight, comes with a handy bag for travel and an attachment that removes lint as it steams. Unlike my old steamer, this one can also tackle clothes on flat surfaces, which means no more worrying about burnt fingers and I can press out collars and sleeves more effectively. For travel especially, I love how slim it is – it will easily squeeze into any remaining suitcase space in even tightly packed bags. It’s a winner. Olivia Morelli

Weight: 700g

Size: H32 x W14 x D6cm

Pros: Very light, slimline, comes with travel pouch, can be used for stubborn creases

Cons: Small, so can only do two or three items at a time

Image may contain: Appliance, Device, Electrical Device, Blow Dryer, and Mixer

I’ve been tempted to purchase a steamer in the past, but most people I’ve asked have said they’ve struggled on heavier fabrics, which has put me off – why buy something that’s only going to work on half your wardrobe? But my fears were not borne out here. I had a pair of jeans looking pressed and perfect within minutes, plus a cotton T-shirt and a button-down, all in far less time than it’d take to iron. The steamer did struggle with the creases on a very crinkle-prone dress, so I had to use the included mitt to hold the fabric more taut at the bottom, which was a little time-consuming. So I’d not ditch my iron completely at home – but for pressing out floaty summer dresses and light shirts while travelling? This is a game-changer. This is a newer, smaller and lighter model than the Steamery option we tested below, and better-designed for use on-the-go. I’d say it’s still a better match for your checked case than your carry-on but, either way, it’s coming with me on my next flight. Charley Ward

Weight: 0.75kg

Size: 31 x 14 x 9cm

Pros: Comes with mitt for doing shirt collars and cuffs, worked very effectively on jeans and heavy fabrics

Cons: Didn’t perform so well on a very creased dress

Image may contain: Appliance, Blow Dryer, Device, Electrical Device, Indoors, Lamp, and Microphone

This steamer is one of the best, size-wise, for travellers – it folds up to around the same size as a shoe, making it easy to slip into the corner of your suitcase. It comes with a refill container, fabric brush and a bag to keep everything neatly together. I was impressed with how quickly it heats up, and it got most of the creases out of a thick white shirt easily. On the other hand, the cord is quite bulky, so it’s a little fiddly to get into the bag properly if not wound in perfectly. Overall though, light packers will likely find this to be a new essential for their travelling tech kit. Amber Port

Weight: 1.26 kg

Size: 28.5 x 24 x 11cm

Pros: Folding design, comes with a fabric brush

Cons: Cord makes it bulky in the bag

Can I travel with a portable steamer?

Most travel steamers will fit into your carry-on and can go through airport security without any issues; just make sure any remaining liquid from the reservoir has been emptied before getting to the airport.

Is a portable steamer worth it?

If you are going to a formal event such as a destination wedding or know you’re packing clothes that are famous for wrinkling, then yes, it's worth adding to your suitcase. As someone who typically only uses a carry-on unless travelling with family, I do value my space and find the steamer to be an easy item to remove should I be running short on room.

What is the lightest travel steamer?

The Nesugar steamer weighs less than a pound, which inched it ahead of the Steamery Cirrus 2 (750 grams and 31cm long) and the Conair Turbo (weighing in at about 900 grams and measuring 33cm long) in overall rating.

More steamers I tested

Of the 10 steamers I tested out, these are the others I would recommend, with caveats:

Image may contain: Appliance, Blow Dryer, Device, Electrical Device, and Microphone

Leave it to Swedish brand Steamery to create not just one of the most effective hand-held steamers on the market, but also the most aesthetically pleasing. Their latest style is a slick-looking steamer and iron in one. The tool heats up quickly with just one button and the power is impressive – I was able to steam a couple of crinkled silk dresses in a matter of minutes. It also comes with a wearable heat-protecting ironing mitt so it's really easy to remove every crease. Overall it's not just great for travel, but can easily replace your iron at home. If you're hand luggage only, this one may be a little on the heavier side, but if you're travelling with check-in luggage, the minimalist design is easy to store amongst your other items. They also make a fabric spray that is brilliant for keeping clothes smelling fresh when you're travelling. Lauren Burvill

Weight: 0.86 kg

Size : 24.6 x 14 x 8cm Pros: Can de-wrinkle anything, can stand on its own, quick heat-up

Cons: On the heavier side for travel

Image may contain: Appliance, Blow Dryer, Device, Electrical Device, Blade, and Weapon

The Conair is definitely a winner in terms of power and functionality — a t-shirt can be good as new in less than a minute.

The Conair Turbo would’ve taken top spot if it were more compact for travelling. If you find yourself using an iron a lot at home, this steamer may actually be your best bet.

Weight: 1.38kg

Size : 34.5 x 21.4 x 14.4 cm

Pros -Can dewrinkle anything  -Various settings to choose from -Quick heat-up

Cons -Hard to fill with small opening -On the larger side for travel

Image may contain: Lamp, Appliance, Blow Dryer, Device, and Electrical Device

At first, I was wondering if I had a faulty unit because it took several minutes for this steamer to heat up, which felt like an eternity compared to others. Once it was ready to go, though, the steam was quite efficient as long as the material wasn’t too thick (button-down shirts worked fine, but nothing heavier). Again, the metal plate comes in handy for more stubborn wrinkles. You have the option to lock the steamer into a continuous stream or control the trigger for smaller bursts (this helps save water in between items, too).

Weight: 1.19kg

Size : 28.5 x 12.5 x 12.5 cm

Pros -Metal plate -Option for continuous steam or manual

Cons - Longer heat up time -Won't tackle jeans or heavier garments -Heavy

Image may contain: Bottle, Shaker, and Cup

International travellers will be happy about the automatic dual voltage with this steamer. While the heat up is quick (about 20 seconds), the reservoir of the steamer is painfully hot so be sure to only hold on to the handle. Unfortunately, the high temperature of the reservoir requires a pause between fill-ups, but you can get three items done with one tank. My favourite feature is the automatic steam from the get-go, which means your fingers get a rest from holding down the trigger button that comes with many other steamers. The main reason this steamer remains on the final list is for its appeal to those who frequently travel abroad.

Weight: 0.5kg

Size : 24.1 x 11.4 x 11.4 cm

Pros -Collapsible handle for travel -Automatic heat-up (no power button) -No trigger needed to release steam

Cons -Cannot promptly refill reservoir because the tank gets so hot
